Alexander Honnold is an American rock climber who was born on August 17, 1985. He is well known for his free solo ascents of massive cliffs, most notably El Capitan in Yosemite National Park in 2017.
Honnold holds the record for the fastest ascent of the Yosemite triple crown, which includes Mount Watkins, The Nose, and Half Dome’s Regular Northwest Face.
Honnold like lofty, lengthy routes and strives to complete them swiftly. He co-wrote the memoir Alone on the Wall (2017) with David Roberts and was the subject of the 2018 biographical documentary Free Solo, which won a BAFTA and an Academy Award.

Honnold was born in Sacramento, California, to Dierdre Wolownick and Charles Honnold, both community college instructors. His paternal ancestors came from Germany, and his maternal ancestors came from Poland.
He began climbing at the age of five in a climbing gym and was climbing “several times a week” by the age of ten. As a teenager, he competed in several national and international youth climbing competitions.

Dean Potter & Sean Leary had set the previous record of 2:36:45 in November 2010. Honnold and Florine established a new record of 2:23:46 (or 2:23:51) over the same course on June 17, 2012.
