Who was James McConnell?
The prominent evangelical Christian preacher, Pastor James McConnell, died aged 84 after a long illness.
His death was announced in a Facebook video post Saturday morning by the Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle.
McConnell founded the North Belfast Church and was its leader for more than 60 years.

The comments were made during one of his sermons at the Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle in 2014.
A judge said that while he considered the statements offensive, he did not consider them “seriously” offensive under the law.
The judge said he thought the pastor’s passion for preaching meant that he “had made him lose control of himself.”
McConnell’s trial sparked a heated debate about freedom of speech and religious freedom in Northern Ireland.
After being in the hospital for approximately seven weeks, ‘the bishop’, as we knew and loved him dearly, deteriorated to the point that the hospital, despite its best efforts, could no longer do anything for him. ” Mr. Purse said.
“To say that we will miss him … is an understatement.”

Purse said the church’s thoughts and prayers were with McConnell’s wife, Margaret, and his daughters, Linda and Julie.
“We would really appreciate his prayers for them at this saddest time,” he added.
In 2015, McConnell was found not guilty in court of making “wildly offensive” comments about Islam.
