United Flight 93 was the only plane hijacked on September 11 that did not reach its intended target, which officials believe was the United States Capitol or another target in Washington DC. The crew and passengers of Flight 93 made phone calls to their families to say goodbye and learned that the hijacked planes were being used as weapons to commit deadly terrorist acts. Beamer and other passengers decided to take over the flight, which crashed at high speed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Among those passengers was Beamer, who tried to call his pregnant wife to tell her that he loved her. They were unable to connect and Beamer relayed his message to operator Lisa Jefferson, who reflected on the call with CBS News.

Beamer developed a plan with other passengers on Flight 93 to attack a hijacker and his last recorded words were “Let’s Roll.”

“At this point he raised his voice,” he said.

Beamer told him they were going down, then up, and turned around. He said he didn’t know where they were going, Jefferson recalled.

When the passengers learned of the attack on the World Trade Center, it was clear that the hijackers were not returning to the airport as they claimed. said reporter Jon Meyer in an interview.

“They knew there was no going back. This was the new reality that we now face and they were the first to realize that they had to do something, ”Meyer said.

One of the kidnappers had a red belt with a bomb tied around his waist. Two of the hijackers, who had knives, entered the cabin and closed the door behind them. At some point, the hijackers closed the curtain between the first class and the coach so that the passengers could not see inside the first class; those in the back of the plane were not being monitored by the hijackers.
