Definitive Ranking of All Back to the Future Movies: A Nostalgic Journey

0

“It don’t take money/don’t take fame/don’t need no credit card to ride this train,” goes the catchy tune from Huey Lewis and the News, setting the stage for “The Power of Love” in the original “Back to the Future.” This isn’t just about the thrill of romance. These lyrics capture the magic of the film in a broader sense, highlighting that the appeal of “Back to the Future” isn’t confined to flashy effects or a steep learning curve. Anyone can immerse themselves in the delightful journey of Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), a teen from 1985, who finds himself transported back to 1955 thanks to a time-traveling car crafted by his eccentric friend, Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd).

The immense success during its initial release ensured that “Back to the Future” wouldn’t simply be a standalone. Hollywood fashion dictated the expansion of its narrative, securing two additional sequels and crafting an entire timeline. While these follow-ups stemmed from one of the most iconic mainstream films of the ’80s, the adventures of Marty McFly didn’t consistently hit the same mark. Sorting the “Back to the Future” films from least to most favorable underscores the reality that even director Robert Zemeckis and his team couldn’t perpetually capture that initial magic.

Yet, these rankings also serve to illuminate the artistic heights of the trilogy, especially the profound triumphs of the first installment. Let “the power of love” be your guide as we delve into the “Back to the Future” saga, mapping out the peaks and valleys of this storied franchise.

3. Back to the Future: Part II

“Back to the Future: Part II” doesn’t destroy the franchise or undo the happy ending of its precursor, but it does suffer from several creative missteps that mar many subpar sequels. The film overly indulges in revisiting the scenes of its predecessor, particularly in the third act, where characters navigate the backdrop of familiar places from the original. This excessive déjà vu, coupled with uninspiring new content from director Robert Zemeckis and his collaborators, leaves much to be desired.

An example of these shortcomings is the overuse of various versions of Biff (Thomas F. Wilson) as antagonists, which exemplifies the misjudged philosophy that more is better. This sequel confuses abundance with excellence, leading to a diluted experience. Even the futuristic segments set in 2015, replete with quirky costumes and sets, feel like lukewarm echoes of the 1955 adventures. Despite the valiant efforts of actors like Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd to breathe life into the film, the material leaves them floundering.

“Back to the Future: Part II” is ultimately too exhausting and derivative for its own good. There are worse sequels out there, but also far better follow-ups to spend time on.

2. Back to the Future: Part III

Like “Jurassic Park,” “Back to the Future” is one of those lucrative movies that just didn’t need a sequel, its plot and artistic joys perfect for a one-off experience. That’s especially true given how “Back to the Future” was followed up by a pair of sequels shot back-to-back that essentially function as one lengthy motion picture. Even given these realities, “Back to the Future: Part III” is an amusing and endearing creation. Disposable? Probably. However, drawing on the cultural legacy of the best Western movies of all time imbues “Back to the Future: Part III” with significantly more energy than its direct predecessor.

Plopping Marty McFly and Doc Brown into an age of High Noon showdowns and tumbleweeds offers up something distinctly different compared to the first two. Exciting set pieces involving a locomotive are also extremely well realized in the hands of Zemeckis. There’s even some fun romantic chemistry between Christopher Lloyd’s Brown and Mary Steenburgen’s Clara Clayton. Delivering a concrete ending to this trilogy also leaves the experience more satisfying.

Sequels to “Back to the Future” were always going to feel a bit like hollow encores. Even with that reality and such shortcomings like too many key elements echoing the original, at least “Part III” rounds up more specificity and fun than “Part II.”

1. Back to the Future

While its sequels are full of creative caveats and glaring shortcomings, the original “Back to the Future” is a spellbinding creation whose potency hasn’t been diluted in the decades since its release. This project put director Robert Zemeckis on the map and is so much darn fun, right from its very first sequence set to the jaunty tune “The Power of Love.” From there, “Back to the Future” keeps on delivering a steady stream of witty jokes, creative obstacles, and memorable images (such as the entirety of the clock tower finale). This enterprise is lively on its feet, conjuring increasingly exciting ways to execute its basic concept of a 1980s teenager ending up back in 1955.

Best of all, “Back to the Future” is a richly human production whose endearing qualities emanate from its engaging performances. Michael J. Fox is the perfect everyman to anchor this high-concept story. Fox constantly exudes a believable underdog aura to Marty McFly that makes it extra exciting to watch him navigate time travel shenanigans. Meanwhile, Christopher Lloyd is kooky fun playing both versions of Doc Brown. The conviction, sincerity, and artistry underpinning these essential performances is mirrored by Alan Silvestri’s consistently transportive score.

Decades after its release, many consider “Back to the Future” to be the best sci-fi movie of all time, and it’s not hard to see why. All the stars aligned for a movie that continues to dazzle.

France and Spain Clash in Semi-Final Showdown Amid Controversy

0

In what promises to be a thrilling encounter, France and Spain are set to face off in the FIFA World Cup semi-final on Wednesday morning, AEST, in Arlington, Texas. With a coveted spot in the final on the line, both teams bring a wealth of talent and an impressive track record to this high-stakes match.

France enters the semi-final riding the momentum of a perfect World Cup run. The team has emerged victorious in all six of its matches, most recently defeating Morocco 2-0 in a formidable quarter-final performance. As two-time world champions and finalists from four years ago, the French squad is keen to continue its winning ways.

Spain’s journey to the semi-finals has been equally impressive. The reigning European champions, having triumphed over England in the Euro 2024 final, remain unbeaten in the tournament. However, their path hasn’t been entirely flawless, as they battled to a scoreless draw against World Cup debutants Cape Verde in their opening match.

Defensively, La Roja has been a fortress throughout the competition, maintaining five consecutive clean sheets until Charles De Ketelaere managed to break through their defense in the quarter-final against Belgium in Los Angeles. Despite this rare lapse, Spain remains confident in its ability to match France’s offensive prowess.

While anticipation builds for this significant clash, the atmosphere has been somewhat dampened by controversy. A comment made by a former Spanish prime minister, deemed racist, has drawn criticism from leaders in both France and Spain, casting a shadow over what should be an exciting showcase of football excellence.

A column, and a backlash

Mariano Rajoy, a member of Spain’s conservative Popular Party, made the comment in a column for Spanish outlet El Debate published last Friday, days before the semi-final.

“They’ve won every match they’ve played at this World Cup and are currently top of the FIFA rankings. They also have an exceptionally strong squad. That said, one thing they don’t have is any French players,” Rajoy wrote.

“And they’re playing very well. They’ll be a formidable opponent.”

A spokesperson from Rajoy’s Popular Party said on Monday the remarks were sarcastic and made without malice.

“These columns are written without ill intent,” spokesperson Borja Sémper said.

“This expression is used without ill intent.”

France responds

On Monday, France’s foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot told French broadcaster BFM TV that “France has no skin colour”.

“Any contrary claim stems from stupidity, racism or a combination of the two,” he said.

A day earlier, French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo wrote on X that “Mariano Rajoy’s remarks about the French team carry intolerable whiffs of racism.”

He added that “they also raise questions about the deplorable climate that gives rise to such sentiments. Our players do not need a certificate of nationality from a former Spanish prime minister”.

Lilian Thuram, who won the World Cup with France in 1998, argued that questioning the players’ Frenchness because of their families’ origins is to deny the nation’s own history.

Comments condemned in Spain

Spain’s ruling socialist government swiftly condemned Rajoy’s remarks, who was prime minister from 2011 to 2018.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez referenced the comments without naming his predecessor, writing on X: “There are those who still measure belonging by surname, place of birth, or skin color. Others measure it by our roots in a country and our will to contribute to it. Playing soccer. Caring for our elders. Or opening businesses.”

He signed off: “France, we’ll see you in the semifinals. May the best one win and may racism lose.”

Spanish foreign minister José Manuel Albares also spoke out on Monday, saying the Popular Party’s leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, needed to disavow the remarks.

Spain forward Borja Iglesias, speaking to sports broadcaster DAZN, said the language itself was the problem.

“It is a very dangerous discourse. Nationality cannot be doubted because of a person’s family origin,” Iglesias said.

“Saying someone is not French because their parents or grandparents are from another country is very serious. If they were born there or have French nationality, they are French and represent their country like anyone else.”

Inside the France camp

France midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery was asked about the comments the day before the game in a news conference at the venue and said he hadn’t seen them.

“This French team has players from different backgrounds and origins,” Zaire-Emery said through a translator.

“So does the country.”

“We are a united group, a united team, and that’s all that matters,” he added.

It’s not the first time France’s team has faced racism during this year’s World Cup.

Earlier this month, Mbappé condemned a Paraguayan senator over remarks she made following Paraguay’s loss to France in the Round of 16.

Celeste Amarilla, a senator from Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party, posted a series of comments on X mocking the French player’s origins, upbringing, education and appearance after France won on July 4 with a penalty by Mbappé.

Exploring Israel’s Initiative to Equip Civilians Against Future Terror Threats Similar to October 7

0

“Fire, fire, fire!” echoes the command from a Kibbutz Bror Hayil security member as he directs his weapon at a volunteer pretending to be a threat. This kibbutz, situated close to the Gaza border, was near the route used by thousands of Hamas-affiliated Palestinians who entered Israel and were responsible for the tragic loss of around 1,200 lives on October 7, 2023.

The training, covered by News Media, marked the eighth such drill organized by Magen48 in collaboration with the Israel Defense Forces. This comprehensive exercise involved local civilian defense teams and aimed to reinforce readiness in southern Israeli settlements for emergencies akin to those experienced on October 7.

Within one scenario, the response to a mock terrorist intrusion at the kibbutz kindergarten was tested. As IDF units were en route, the civilian defense group had to act swiftly, balancing the presence of children, low visibility conditions, and the dual objectives of tackling the threat and facilitating a secure evacuation. During the simulation, a mock grenade explosion resulted in a pretend injury to the leg of one defense squad member, while others successfully subdued the attackers.

In earlier sessions, participants learned to operate weapons from behind cover while sitting, lying down, standing and moving. They are also trained to work in pairs and larger groups while developing communication skills. The exercises grew increasingly complex, with teams conducting drills inside buildings and responding to continuous emergency alerts.

Because the exercise took place inside a civilian community, no live ammunition was used. All weapons and equipment were secured to prevent accidental discharge. Residents were notified in advance of the drill.

Among the 47 participants were IDF soldiers and medical personnel from the Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade.

Magen48 instructor T., who could not reveal his full name for security reasons, said the Bror Hayil program initially presented significant challenges.

(Israel Defense Forces via AP)

“The civil defense squad was made up of soldiers who had served in special forces alongside others who had never held combat roles in the military. Some were issued weapons they had never used during their service. Training begins with weapons familiarization, covering the basics of firearm operation and how to manipulate the weapon’s safety mechanisms,” he said.

One lesson drawn from Oct. 7 was that many members of civilian security squads responded alone. “Whoever ran alone was not able to fend off terrorists,” T. said, explaining that the training emphasizes locating another squad member before engaging whenever possible.

“The idea behind this project is to establish a unified operational language, so that if an incident occurs, nearby communities can join the response and coordinate effectively,” he said.

“The idea is that they are able to manage the event until forces arrive, then hand over control in an orderly manner while continuing to work together. They know the kibbutz, they work well as teams and they have undergone high-quality training that sharpened their skills.”

Magen48, established in July 2024 and named for the 48 first responders killed on Oct. 7, has trained 1,500 civilians to respond to life-threatening emergencies, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and resources to contend with scenarios including terrorist attacks, medical emergencies and fires.

Counterterrorism expert Ehud Dribben, who has 30 years of experience in the field, co-founded the organization with Ari Briggs and Mike Aron. As the three began planning to create a training facility, the IDF approached them to develop a program providing each of the 67 Gaza Envelope communities with 12 full training days annually. To date, Magen48 has conducted more than 550 training sessions.

The training exercise began with the community command center issuing an alert about eight terrorists infiltrating the kibbutz, prompting members of the civil defense squad to mobilize to their assigned defensive positions.

Briggs and Dribben designed the exercise around five key locations where the defense squad would ultimately need to concentrate its forces. Response times are measured, and every step — from alerting residents to engaging the terrorists and evacuating casualties — is closely monitored.

“The reports that emerged after Oct. 7 showed that civilian first responders were incredibly brave. They were prepared to do anything to protect their families, friends and communities, but they were not trained adequately and lacked the equipment they needed,” Briggs said.

“Strong, well-trained civilian response teams don’t just improve security — they help bring communities back together, strengthen resilience and ensure these towns grow and have an amazing future,” he added.

Retired British Col. Richard Kemp, who observed the training exercises, said the primary objective is to prevent another Oct. 7.

“I was in the British army for 30 years, so I understand the importance of defense and security for a country like Israel,” he told News Media. “If you know that your enemy has a capability of any sort to endanger you, you have to be ready to deal with that capability through the kind of work that Magen48 is doing.”

Kemp called the drill one of the most complex exercises he had witnessed.

“It’s really important that these drills take place to give the local community confidence that its security is a top priority and that forces are doing everything they can to prepare for another terrorist attack like the one we saw on Oct. 7,” he said.

Texas Adolescents Apprehended Following Drowning of Swimmer Daniel Erving

0

Following an incident at a Texas lake involving the drowning of a high school swimmer, authorities have detained two teenagers who are accused of discarding his belongings.

Eighteen-year-old Daniel Erving, a distinguished swimmer and honor roll student, tragically lost his life after he and two friends leaped off a railroad bridge into Lake Ray Hubbard, located in the eastern suburbs of Dallas.

Four days post-incident, Erving’s body was retrieved from the lake. A medical examiner confirmed that the cause of death was accidental drowning.

According to the Dallas Police Department, Lucas Roper, 19, along with a 17-year-old juvenile, allegedly neglected to report their friend’s tragic demise and subsequently disposed of Erving’s clothing and cellphone.

The Dallas police informed ABC News on a Monday that both individuals were taken into custody and face third-degree felony charges for tampering with physical evidence.

After the teen drowned, Roper and the juvenile fled the scene, and Roper allegedly threw Erving’s clothing into a tree line near the bridge, according to an arrest affidavit seen by the outlet.

The juvenile also threw Erving’s cellphone from the vehicle on Roper’s orders, the affidavit alleges.

Roper allegedly deleted communications with Erving from his cellphone because he “was aware that there would be an investigation into Daniel Erving’s death and he did not want to get into trouble,” the affidavit states.

Roper allegedly admitted he “panicked” after Erving drowned during a voluntary interview with detectives.

The case remains under investigation.

Balogun Reveals Trump’s Surprising Influence on US Soccer Team

0

Folarin Balogun has revealed that FIFA’s contentious decision to delay his suspension—partly due to an intervention by Donald Trump—impacted the USMNT’s performance in their World Cup loss to Belgium.

The 25-year-old found himself at the heart of a global controversy when news broke that the former president had urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to reassess Balogun’s red card. The dismissal came during a match in which the USA triumphed over Bosnia and Herzegovina, leading to an automatic suspension that initially kept Balogun out of the last-16 clash with Belgium.

Despite the initial ruling, efforts from US Soccer authorities and the White House resulted in the ban being lifted less than a day before the match. This move ignited allegations of favoritism and meddling in sports affairs. Ultimately, the USMNT’s campaign ended with a heavy 4-1 defeat to Belgium.

On Tuesday, Balogun appeared on CBS Mornings and he admitted: ‘My initial reaction was that I was happy to be back in the team. But when I started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy.

“I could sense a certain level of anxiety among my teammates because it was such an unusual situation,” Balogun reflected. “As the game drew near, I tried my hardest to stay focused, but it was challenging with all the outside distractions.”

He continued, “It was baffling as the team had been preparing without me, and I found myself in more of a supportive role, aiming to keep spirits high.”

Balogun’s comments come just days after Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House’s World Cup Task Force, conceded that the scandal surrounding the red card could have impacted US players.

Giuliani insisted he ‘stands by’ the decision to intervene, maintaining that – given all the money the US spent on the tournament – they wanted to ensure the World Cup was ‘fairly administered on the pitch.’

But when asked by the Daily Mail whether the whole saga could have distracted Mauricio Pochettino’s team, he said: ‘Potentially.’

Balogun, who has signed with Klutch Sports – the agency which represents the likes of LeBron James and Jalen Hurts – was shown a straight red card after a collision with Bosnian player Tarik Muharemovic. As he tussled for the ball, the USA striker landed on the back of his opponent’s leg, raking down his calf before landing on the defender’s ankle.

‘It wasn’t even a tackle so I was totally in shock,’ Balogun told CBS on Tuesday. ‘I think you could see my reaction but I just had to accept the decision and just try and be there for my team.’

He added: ‘When something is not intentional it should never be a red card – it was just an unfortunate situation and I think it put a lot more pressure on us than we needed.’

Balogun also gave CBS viewers an insight into the atmosphere within the USMNT as the saga played out.

‘My teammates are like my brothers so they gave me a lot of reassurance: it wasn’t something I could change, it was just the situation that was unfortunate – which gave me confidence,’ he said.

‘But it was confusing because the team was practicing without me in the team, I’m almost just playing a supporting role to keep morale high… we found out [that his ban was suspended] on the team bus – everybody was screaming and shouting, it was a pretty intense bus ride to the practice field.

He continued ‘It’s more [about] being able to separate the emotion from the job at hand – we’re all professionals so it’s not something I think was too difficult to be able to separate once we got over the initial announcement that I’d be back in the team.

‘But you saw definitely it was a difficult game against Belgium and that can overshadow whether we were focused or not. But from me being inside the camp and inside the setup, I know we had full concentration going into the game.’

Balogun was the USA’s top scorer at the World Cup with three goals and news of his reprieve was seen as a huge boost heading into the clash with Belgium.

But Pochettino’s team struggled badly in the last-16 clash in Seattle. ‘The feeling of disappointment is very difficult to put into words,’ Balogun said at the time.

‘To not have the energy in a round-of-16 World Cup game, it’s difficult to explain. So I can only tell you my emotions which are disappointment and a lot of sadness.’

USA captain Tim Ream insisted after the game that all the noise surrounding the red card ‘had no impact’ on the team but, even that night, Balogun suggested he would have more to say on the matter once the dust had settled on the USA’s loss.

‘The situation I’ve been involved in is also going to present different challenges,’ he said. ‘So it’s just important, for me, to be able to gather my thoughts and then at the right time, I’m sure I’ll be able to speak on the topic.’

On Tuesday, Balogun told CBS it ‘has been nice to step out’ of the ‘tough, high-pressure’ bubble of a World Cup campaign. But he added: ‘It was amazing to be a part of it – I really felt we were able to unite the country.

‘That was an aspiration of mine and the team before we set out and I definitely felt that. You could how many fans and how many young kids were captured by it.’

EIU Football Heroes Inspire Heartwarming Adoption Stories After Kitten Rescue

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A team of five football players from Eastern Illinois University is taking the lead in promoting the adoption of shelter cats. They recently set an example by adopting two kittens from the Coles County Animal Shelter.

“We decided that if we’re going to get a pet, rescue should be the way to go,” said Whitten Weems, a tight end on the team.

Weems recounted their experience, saying the moment they arrived at the shelter, they felt an instant bond as if the animals chose them.

“We brought our roommate along,” Weems explained. “He was seated when Bonnie, one of the kittens, leapt into his lap and stayed there comfortably for the duration of our visit.”

They adopted a six-week-old kitten, but his roommate and defensive end Joel Jameson said one cat just wasn’t enough.

“So we ended up getting Megatron,” said Jameson. “So pretty self explanatory that it’s just a bunch of guys living in this house, because it’s a pretty unconventional naming system.”

Megatron is a three-month-old kitten, named after both the Transformers’ antagonist and NFL wide receiver Calvin Johnson. As far as personalities go, he’s on the rambunctious side.

“He’s a dude, he likes to run around, jump around,” said Weems.

Bonnie’s a lot calmer, but just as curious.

“Cute ‘lil thing, all of like one pound,” said Jameson.

Since adopting the two of them Wednesday, the entire team has grown to love the two cats.

“You see a 325 pound o-lineman with these little kittens on him, and he just turns into a little boy,” said Jameson.

Now, some players are following suit.

“Some of our teammates went down, I think, two days ago and got themselves a kitten,” Jameson said. “And more guys are going later to do it. So yeah, it’s kind of everybody’ jumping on board.”

Jameson is now encouraging others to find their own feline dynamic duo like Bonnie and….Megatron.

Weems and Jameson both said they enjoyed their experience at the Coles County Animal Shelter, adding cat adoption fees are only $25 through the month of July.

Dancing With The Stars: Briar Nolet’s Inspiring Comeback After Samba Slip

Dancing With The Stars: The Next Pro showcases 12 of the globe’s top dancers competing for a coveted spot in the ballroom for Dancing With The Stars Season 35. Each participant brings unique talent to the stage, but ultimately, only one can claim victory. The show began with an unexpected double elimination featuring Jake Monreal and Briar Nolet. Monreal, recognized from Dancing With The Stars: Junior and So You Think You Can Dance, exited the competition due to insufficient musicality in his jive routine, despite his vibrant presence. Meanwhile, Nolet—known for touring with Jennifer Lopez after her World of Dance appearance—experienced a stumble during her samba. Despite this mishap, judges Shirley Ballas, Mark Ballas, and guest Derek Hough commended her resilience while advising her to focus on refining her skills.

“Naturally, both Jake and I hoped to make it to the finals,” Nolet stated, quickly adding that “everything happens for a reason.” For Monreal, just being selected for DWTS: The Next Pro was a significant triumph. “It meant someone believed in our potential to join the DWTS family eventually,” he remarked. Both Nolet and Monreal found deep value in their experience. Even though their performances received varied responses from the judges, Nolet considered receiving feedback to be a victory itself. Monreal concurred, expressing that, “When experts of such caliber offer advice, it’s wise to take it seriously.”

Nolet and Monreal joined Decider on a Zoom call to reflect on their competition experience, celebrate their fellow dancers, and share how they have become like “family” to one another.

DECIDER: Briar and Jake, it’s unfortunate your paths on DWTS: The Next Pro ended so soon. With some reflection, how do you view the experience now?

BRIAR NOLET: Of course, Jake and I would have loved to stay until the very end, but I firmly believe everything happens for a reason. I walked away with lasting friendships. Our fellow competitors truly deserve all the good things coming to them. Receiving critiques from the judges was also a huge advantage for growth. It’s disappointing to leave early, but I am truly thankful for the opportunity.

JAKE MONREAL: We already won by getting the opportunity to go on The Next Pro because that meant that someone thought we may have what it takes someday to be a part of the DWTS family. I’m eternally grateful. This experience really meant a lot to me. It’s something special. I gave each stage of the competition—including the training beforehand—everything that I could have. I’m proud of what I left out there.

DWTS: The Next Pro, AJ Pritchard, Derek Hough and Jake Monreal

Disney/Vince Valitutti

Jake, for the first challenge, you were paired with AJ Pritchard for the jive. I know he was skeptical of you at first because of your age. What was it like working with him?

JM: He was the utmost professional. I knew him from Strictly Come Dancing so I knew that he would be one of the toughest competitors in the house. When we got paired up together, I was like, “all right, good, I’m excited for this.” I wanted to show that I could compete with somebody at his level. I know the age thing was something that was brought up a little bit. It was funny watching him around the house with his night mask and his pajamas. It was very, uh, 30+ coded [laughs], but I shouldn’t say that.

Briar, you were paired with Stephani Sosa for the samba. What was that experience like?

BN: Stephani’s such a doll. She has a nice background of ballroom, Latin and commercial experience. It was great to be able to learn from her and to work with her. Because she had that commercial background, she’d understand certain terminology I’d use. She helped me drill the moves over and over again. I worked hard to remember the choreography and tried to focus on the technique that I’d been learning for the last year and a half.

The samba is a very difficult dance. But once I sat down with Stephani and we started to talk, she managed to calm me down. It was good for us both to focus on what was important, which was fundamentals and technique. Stephani and I were able to help each other and get to the level we needed to be at. We kept each other grounded.

You both had the opportunity to be coached by Derek Hough. What makes him such a great mentor?

JM: He has this energy about him whenever he walks into the room. It’s pretty incredible. He makes you want to dance. He makes you feel better about being there. He sets the tone and sets the standard, which is what all the best teachers I’ve worked with do.

BN: He genuinely wanted the best for each and every one of us, no matter if he already had personal relationships or not. He just wanted everyone to feel comfortable. Derek’s a bit of a goofball. He is the best of the best, but he is very humble and down to earth. He just wanted it to be fair competition for everyone, which is all you can ask for in a mentor that’s working with every competitor.

DWTS: The Next Pro, Stephani Sosa and Briar Nolet

Disney/Vince Valitutti

Briar, unfortunately, you suffered a slip during your samba. Can you walk me through what was going through your mind at that moment?

BN: Going into that moment, I was obviously very high on adrenaline and energy. After that slip happened, I just felt very determined to keep going. I’m a sweet girl, but when I perform, I can get very competitive with myself. Once I came out of that back handspring, I was like, “oh, heck no, I’m not going down.” Even though I was frustrated with myself, I wasn’t gonna let the slip deter me. I still had the rest of the solo and the side by side with Stephani. I just had to lock in and keep going.

I’ve said it a million times, but everything happens for a reason. I wouldn’t change the way that I went about preparing, before or during the competition. I can sleep at night knowing that there was nothing more I could have done. After I slipped, I pushed myself to finish out strong and do the best I could.

I think you handled yourself with incredible grace.

BN: Thank you.

Jake, you felt pretty good about your jive, but both Derek and Mark Ballas had notes about your energy and musicality. Did you think those were fair comments?

JM: I respect the both of them so much as performers, choreographers and teachers. I’m taking to heart any comments they give me. I’m using that critique to better myself. If people with that amount of expertise are telling you something, you should probably listen.

Briar, Shirley Ballas praised your presence, but both she and Derek urged you to work on your technique. How did you feel about feedback you’d receive?

BN: There’s no such thing as perfect. I can be proud of what I did, but also accept criticism with an open mind. There’s always room to improve. Especially being newer to ballroom, it was an honor to perform in front of those three judges and get notes from them. As soon as I got back home, I had a meeting with my coaches and figured out the best way to go forward if my goal is still to be a pro on Dancing With The Stars. I took the judges’ comments and applied them to my training.

Both of you did not want to be the first to go home. You didn’t want to go home at all! You both took being eliminated with such grace. Were Robert Irwin, the judges and your fellow contestants there for you?

JM: The Next Pro environment is such a pressure cooker that we all formed a deep bond with each other almost immediately. On top of the competition, we were also living together! Right after I got eliminated, I felt the love and support from everyone. Robert said some very nice things to me afterwards. Obviously, being eliminated was not what I was hoping for. I was hoping to win and be the next pro. Like Briar said, everything happens for a reason. It wasn’t my time just quite yet. And it’ll be my time at some other point.

BN: Timing is everything. If anything, this experience will make us even more prepared for when the opportunity to be a DWTS pro hopefully presents itself again. Plus, there were so many wins. Jake and I are now a part of this wonderful family with the other dancers. We bonded even more after we were eliminated on the same night. He’s like a younger brother to me now. We still talk all the time.

JM: Briar was talking about this a little earlier, but getting eliminated alone must have really sucked. I was really lucky to have Briar. I wouldn’t want to get eliminated with anybody but Briar, if that makes any sense [laughs]. We were really there for each other. It’s crazy how these bonds form.

BN: Totally. And as much as it sucks going home, there were no hard feelings. We are rooting for each dancer to do well and succeed. It’s exciting to see where we all go from here.

Forensic Expert Highlights Key Mistake in Husband’s 911 Call After NJ Mother’s Tragic Slaying

0

A haunting 911 call from Conor Hanlon, the husband of tragically murdered New Jersey therapist Brooke Hanlon, has captured widespread attention as online detectives eagerly dissect it for potential leads.

The gripping audio from the call reveals the harrowing moment Conor discovered his wife covered in blood, offering a troubling glimpse into the horrific scene he encountered.

On June 6, 35-year-old Brooke Hanlon was discovered fatally stabbed in her home in Chester, New Jersey. As the investigation progresses, no charges have been filed, and Conor Hanlon remains unaccused of any wrongdoing.

Attempts to contact Conor Hanlon by the media for comment have gone unanswered, as calls have not yet been returned.

Following the call’s release, theories circulated online about a possible suspect. One of the nation’s top forensic linguists is warning those following the case not to jump to conclusions.

“You can’t tell from a 911 call,” Dr. Robert Leonard, a forensic linguist and Hofstra University professor, said to News Media.

“People very often try to,” he goes on to say.

Dr. Leonard’s blunt breakdown comes amid social media speculation.

Internet sleuths are dissecting Hanlon’s frantic tone of voice and his word choice, like referring to one of Brooke’s wounds as a “laceration” in the nearly seven-minute call.

That’s exactly the kind of analysis that has led to devastating mistakes, Dr. Leonard said.

He pointed to multiple murder investigations where innocent people were publicly vilified because of how they sounded while calling 911.

One case he references is that of the father of Isabel Celis, Sergio Celis. He reported his six-year-old daughter missing from their Tucson, Arizona home in 2012.

Investigators discovered her remains five years later; leading up to this discovery, Mr. Celis was branded a killer, Dr. Leonard says.

“For six years all of the supposed amateur experts said he did it,” Leonard said.

Ultimately, Christopher Clements , a convicted sex offender, was also convicted of young Isabel’s murder and kidnapping.

In another notorious case, then-teenager Marty Tankleff, of Long Island, New York spent 17 years in prison, wrongfully convicted.

Prosecutors zeroed in on his alleged calm demeanor following the killings of his parents; that conviction was eventually overturned.

“Everybody is so different,” Leonard said. “There are no reliable markers.”

He goes on to say, “We should not rush to judgment.”

As for the call itself, he said, “You don’t do a murder investigation with one bit of data,” he said.

The investigation into Brooke Hanlon’s killing is ongoing, The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation.

There is still a $1,000 reward for anyone who can provide information in the case.

Unlock a Birthday Surprise: Taylor Swift Invites Fans to Experience the Extended Eras Tour Film

Amidst recent backlash from fans over steep rental prices, Taylor Swift is calling on her devoted fans, affectionately known as Swifties, to celebrate her upcoming 34th birthday by renting the extended version of her popular concert film, The Eras Tour.

In a heartfelt post to her 94.9 million followers on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, the pop icon spiced up the announcement with an enticing trailer and a slew of emojis to hint at a celebration ahead.

Drawing inspiration from her music, Swift playfully penned a note filled with lyrical references: “I had the time of my life fighting dragons with youuuu [hands in the shape of heart emoji]

‘Celebrate 34 with me by watching The Eras Tour (Extended Version) including “Long Live” [dragon emoji] “The Archer” [bow and arrow emoji] and “Wildest Dreams” [blue heart emoji] at home!” she encouraged.

The celebratory offering does come at a price, however, as the film’s rental is set for a limited two-day availability, priced at £15.99 in the UK and $19.89 in the US and Canada.

Swift added: ‘PS troll me all you want about my excessive and literal millennial emoji use but A) no one’s prouder to be a millennial and B) it’s my bday and today I am exempt! [birthday cake emoji]’

The video clip included in the post saw the A-lister performing Long Live from her 2010 album Speak Now.

She looked absolutely stunning as she sported a lilac dress featuring a massive tulle skirt.

This came after fans have been left fuming after the extended version of her Eras Tour film was released on Wednesday, but can only be rented for just 48 hours for an extortionate fee.

The singer celebrated her 34th birthday on Wednesday and to mark the occasion, Prime Video released Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Extended Version) in the UK, the US and Canada.

A homage to her 10 studio albums to date, The Eras Tour has been described by the singer-songwriter as a journey through all of her musical ‘eras’.

The new version of the concert film includes three bonus songs not seen in theatres— Wildest Dreams, The Archer and Long Live.

She made several references to her music as she wrote: 'I had the time of my life fighting dragons with youuuu [hands in the shape of heart emoji]'

Taylor’s fans have criticised the songwriter for the ‘mental’ price and for only letting people rent the film instead of allowing them to buy it to keep or stream as part of their subscription.

Many lamented that they couldn’t ‘justify’ the fee or afford it, with one saying it would force them to ‘choose between eating for two days and watching a movie’.

Angry fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to slam the decision and complain that they had already spent huge amounts of money on her ‘crazy prices’ to support her.

One person wrote: ‘happy birthday taylor swift or whatever but girl im not giving u $20 for 48 hours of the movie im sorry GIVE US THE OPTION TO BUY’.

Another echoed: ‘I’m sorry but almost $20 to RENT the film is way too much. I would be wanting to buy it for that price. @taylorswift13 you can’t keep raising the prices so it’s nice numbers for you because it’s not worth it for some of us’.

A third added: ‘I throw money at Taylor Swift stuff so often but even I cannot justify $19.89 to rent the Eras Tour movie lol if it was to buy, I would already own it.’

While someone else tweeted: ‘As much as I love Taylor Swift making a movie £15.99 just to rent it is f***ing mental. We are in a cost of living crisis babe.’

A fifth wrote: ‘I love Taylor Swift but $19.89 to rent a movie at home is insane. She could’ve made it $13 if she wanted to be cute with the price. Time to p*rate it.’

However, the movie is only available to rent and just for 48 hours, with it costing £15.99 in the UK and $19.89 in America and Canada

And a sixth agreed, saying: ‘Bro I like Taylor swift but you could never catch me spending 20 f***ing dollars to RENT A GODDAMN MOVIE JESUS CHRIST.’

Another disappointed fan said: ‘I’ve paid over £400 to go and see Taylor Swift and stop over night, a further £40 cinema ticket and merch. I love Her and Her music but when will the crazy prices stop? £16 to rent a movie once is ridiculous, that’s making me choose between eating for 2 days and watching a movie.’

While an eighth fumed: ‘taylor swift has lost her mind if she thinks i’m going to pay $20 to rent a movie for 48 hours like actually what planet do you live on’.

A ninth bemoaned: ‘I wish that I could rent it for Taylor Swift’s birthday today, but I can’t do that due to budget restraints’.

And another said: ‘£16 to RENTTTTTT that taylor swift movie is insaneeeeeee’ while one former fan declared: ‘oh $19.89 to RENT and not own… i am DONE with taylor swift’.

It comes after it was estimated that the Eras Tour movie has grossed $250 million worldwide while the tour itself pushed Taylor’s own net worth to $1.1billion in October, according to Forbes.

The film was history making – it generated $26 million in pre-sale tickets alone and broke the single-day ticket sales records in a mere three hours.

The movie has even been nominated for a Golden Globe in a brand new category – the award for Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement.

It will face competition from a slew of other impressive films: Barbie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Oppenheimer, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and The Super Mario Bros.

Shania Twain humorously addresses her absence at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding for the bride’s former partner

See the impact of Harry Styles on her plans.

Shania Twain cited her commitment to Harry Styles’ “Together, Together” tour as the reason she missed attending Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding.

The singer, famous for hits like “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” revealed during an interview with CTV’s etalk that she had received an invite to Swift’s wedding but was unable to go due to prior obligations with Styles’ concerts.

With a hint of amusement, Twain noted the irony of the situation, given Swift’s brief relationship with Styles, which lasted from 2012 to 2013.

Despite her prior commitments, Twain emphasized she “would have done anything to be at Taylor’s wedding” to Kelce, expressing her regret over missing the celebration.

“It would have been really lovely for me to be there, but I was with Harry,” she said.

Twain, notably, was the opening act of the former One Direction member’s 12-show residency at London’s Wembley Stadium, which concluded on the Fourth of July.

Swift and Kelce’s wedding took place in New York City on July 3 — and Styles performed “Two Ghosts,” a breakup song inspired by their short-lived romance, hours later.

The “X Factor” alum’s fiancée, Zoë Kravitz, is close friends with Swift, 36, and attended the Madison Square Garden nuptials without Styles.

Kravitz, who got engaged to Styles in April, was photographed heading to the ceremony solo in a beaded mesh dress and strappy heels.

The 37-year-old actress was one of more than 1,000 guests at the star-studded event earlier this month.

Twain, meanwhile, was not the only celeb to confess to skipping out on the A-list affair.

Ryan Seacrest revealed on his eponymous radio show last week that after he “RSVP’d to go … Disney hired [him] to do the Fourth of July 250 special on the 3rd and the 4th.”

The “American Idol” host, 51, was “torn” but had “no choice” but to cancel since “it’s part of [his] job at Disney to do these things.”

As for James Taylor, he missed Swift and Kelce, 36, saying “I do” to perform at Tanglewood Music Festival, as he has done for the past 52 years of the Independence Day concert.

“You know, [my wife Kim] and I were invited to a wedding at Madison Square Garden tonight,” the performer, 78, told audience members.
