Discover Lindsey Graham’s Humble Beginnings

0

From humble beginnings in a small South Carolina town, Lindsey Graham charted an extraordinary path to become a leading figure in the United States Senate, renowned for his fervent advocacy of American influence on the world stage.

Tragically, at 71, Graham passed away Saturday night. The Washington DC medical examiner’s office reported that the preliminary cause of death was an aortic dissection stemming from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Graham, who was first elected to represent South Carolina in 2002, left a legacy as a tireless public servant. Announced early Sunday by his office, the news of his passing was attributed to a “brief and sudden illness.”

Despite his eventual rise to prominence, the roots of Graham’s story were modestly planted in Central, South Carolina.

Raised by Millie and Florence James Graham, who operated a quaint establishment known as the Sanitary Cafe—a combination restaurant, bar, and pool hall—young Graham learned the intricacies of diplomacy amidst the clinking of pool balls.

‘It was a good life,’ Graham told the Post and Courier in 2015. ‘I could go grab a Coke any time I wanted to. In my world, I was as rich as I could be.’

Graham won a South Carolina statehouse seat in 1992 and then a US House seat in 1994 before being elected to the Senate in 2002, where he became known for his hawkish foreign policy views.

Graham, who was one of President Trump’s closest allies, had just returned to Washington from a trip to Ukraine to announce an agreement on a new package of sanctions against Russia before his death.

Growing up in Central, Graham lived with his parents and younger sister, Darline Graham Nordone, in a single room behind his family’s pool hall, Politico reported.

He would occasionally have a drink of customers’ beers or a smoke, as patrons nicknamed him ‘Stinkball.’

Graham, who was only a C student in high school, became the first member of his family to attend college when he enrolled at the University of South Carolina.

But while in school, his mom died of Hodgkin lymphoma. Within a 15 month period, his dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer and died of a heart attack.

Graham said he went from the ‘best of times to completely absolutely devastated in about 18 months,’ recalling a trip he took with his family in 1975.

‘We went on a vacation to Disney World, which was just like going to the moon for us: a plane ride, going to Disney World,’ Graham told CNN in 2015. ‘And a few months after that, my mom was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease, and she passed by June.’

He added: ‘If it wasn’t for my family, friends … and faith, I would not be sitting here today.’

After that, Graham was instrumental in raising his sister, 13 at the time. He later became her legal guardian.

‘He’s kind of like a brother, a father and a mother rolled into one,’ Nordone told The New York Times in 2015. ‘I’ve always looked up to Lindsey.’

Did Lindsey Graham’s rise from humble beginnings make him a better leader or compromise his values?

After earning his law degree from the University of South Carolina’s School of Law in 1981, Graham served as a judge advocate general in the Air Force.

He started as a defense attorney for accused troops and later rose to the Air Force’s chief prosecutor in Europe, based in Germany.

He returned to South Carolina in 1989 but was a reserve or National Guard member for decades afterwards.

It was upon coming back home that Graham entered politics, challenging Democratic incumbent Lowell W. Ross for South Carolina’s House District 2 in 1992.

Graham won with 6,389 votes to Ross’ 4,177 votes, per South Carolina Election Commission records. This began the GOP lawmaker’s remarkably fast ascent.

Two years later, Graham ran for South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District after the incumbent Democrat, Butler Derrick, decided to retire, and won.

The seat had been occupied by a Democrat since 1877, according to The New York Times.

Graham became known for being one of a group of young Republicans who pushed to oust then–House Speaker Newt Gingrich for cutting too many deals with then–president, Bill Clinton, a Democrat.

The rising Republican star also became known for his role in Clinton’s impeachment proceedings for his sex scandal with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

‘Is this Watergate or Peyton Place?’ Graham memorably asked at one impeachment hearing in 1998, referring to the 60s soap opera.

Graham would win reelection to the House three times, serving for a total of four terms from January 1995 to January 2003.

But when South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond retired in 2003, Graham turned his attention to the Senate and ran to succeed the GOP stalwart.

He disposed of Democratic candidate Alex Sanders and won the race with 54.4 percent of the vote.

Graham quickly emerged as one of the Senate’s biggest hawks and became known for his friendship with senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman, a Democrat who later became an Independent.

The group of lawmakers was known as the Three Amigos, as they traveled the globe and pushed for US intervention, notably in the Middle East.

While in Senate, Graham briefly switched back to active status to help advise the Air Force during the Iraq War.

He was awarded the Bronze Star medal for service in 2014 before formally retiring as a colonel in 2015.

When McCain died from glioblastoma in 2018, an emotional Graham broke down in tears on the Senate floor.

‘He failed a lot, but he never quit,’ Graham said. ‘The reason we’re talking about him today and the reason I’m crying is because he was successful in spite of his failures.’

McCain’s daughter, Meghan, paid tribute to Graham as ‘always the person you hoped you sat next to at a dinner party’ Sunday on X.

‘Lindsey brought humor and loyalty to my Dad’s political defeats and was a constant source of support for my mother after my Dad’s passing,’ she wrote. ‘As a politician his skills were unmatched which is why he won so many elections and was well on his way to winning another.’

In his later years, Graham was initially a firm opponent of President Trump, even running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.

But Graham later became one of Trump’s closest allies, frequently golfing with him and endorsing his MAGA policies.

On Monday, Graham had called Trump ‘the GOAT of Presidents’ on his X account.

After Graham’s death, Trump remembered him as ‘one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known.’

‘He was always working, and was a true American Patriot,’ Trump wrote on Truth Social. ‘Lindsey will be greatly missed!!!’

Graham was also known for his support of Ukraine and Israel, being one of the leading voices in the US’ support of both countries amid separate ongoing wars.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was among the world figures who remembered Graham after his death.

‘Lindsey understood that the security of Israel and America are inseparable. He devoted his life to defending America, strengthening our alliance and standing up for the free world,’ Netanyahu wrote on X.

He added: ‘Israel has lost one of its greatest friends. America has lost a great patriot. I have lost a beloved friend.’

Six Months On: Venezuelans Continue to Grapple with Uncertainty After Maduro’s US Abduction

0

Perched in a hillside neighborhood of Venezuela’s capital, Patricia Mata witnessed an unprecedented political upheaval that reverberated throughout the globe.

On January 3rd, Nicolás Maduro, the nation’s president, was apprehended during a nighttime operation by US forces, amidst a series of military strikes across Venezuela.

“From my view, I distinctly saw the missile launch, the marking trails it left, and the echoing impact. My house’s walls trembled, and the windows rattled,” she recounted.

The days that followed were marked by uncertainty over leadership as Maduro was extradited to the US to face multiple charges, including narco-terrorism.

United States President Donald Trump announced he was taking charge and declared Venezuela, particularly its substantial oil resources, as under his protection.

The country’s acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, was sworn in days after Maduro’s capture, and has since handled domestic affairs — including the response to the devastating twin earthquakes which struck last month, leaving thousands dead and many more displaced.

Six months after US intervention, many Venezuelans told SBS News very little has changed — food is even more expensive and freedom of expression remains stifled.

The initial political upheaval gave opposition activists such as Alida Hernandez hope that the country’s dire economic situation would finally improve.

“When they took Nicolás Maduro, I thought it was the end, I thought that’s it, they took him, let’s rebuild,” she told SBS News.

“We’re still suffering, we’re still scared, we’re still in the same uncertainty.”

‘Happy country’

Despite Venezuela having the world’s largest proven crude oil reserves, it produces only around a million barrels a day — less than the daily needs of Australia.

Last month, Trump said millions of barrels had been extracted from Venezuela since the US took control of its oil, to the benefit of both countries.

“Now we’re making a lot of money with Venezuela. And Venezuela is doing great. It’s a happy country now,” he said on 23 June.

But that money is nowhere to be seen among the people SBS News spoke to.

Social worker Iris Useche questioned who the money was going to.

“They say that money from oil is coming in, but we don’t see it,” she said. “Who are they giving it to? How are they distributing it? The hospitals stay the same.”

Life remains as tough as it used to be. Families are forced to create makeshift stoves because there’s no gas, electricity frequently cuts out, and their water comes from tanks.

What’s more, there is widespread distrust and fear of the authorities.

A young woman holds a young girl in her arms, who waves at the camera. They stand on dirt in front of tents.

Venezuelans told SBS News they feel in “limbo” — not just under the control of the same administration that was headed by Maduro but now the Trump administration too.

When asked who she felt was in charge of the country, Useche wasn’t sure.

“I don’t know,” she said. “The truth is we don’t know if it’s Trump or Delcy because we don’t see change. We are in the same situation.”

And though she feared voicing her concerns to the media, Useche said she had to speak out.

“Unfortunately, we have to do it. We can’t stay silent.”

‘Good times are coming’

Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been demanding fresh elections for months but remains barred from returning to the country.

Fervent believers of the socialist government reject her calls, demanding instead the immediate return of Maduro, who they say was kidnapped in a gross violation of international law.

Lisandro Perez, head of a local civil armed group, or ‘colectivo’, is one such supporter.

“I felt indignation, a lot of anger and sadness because he’s my friend, we’ve known each other since we were kids,” Perez said about Maduro’s capture.

He blames the US for the country’s economic hardship.

A middle-aged woman in a floral dress stands in front of a balcony looking over a road and a large building.

“Why the US? Because they are the ones who imposed trade sanctions.”

Maduro took office in 2013 after the death of Hugo Chávez, who had served as president since 1999. By that point, his predecessor’s economic policies had caused inflation to spike to 56 per cent, International Monetary Fund data shows.

The US imposed financial sanctions in 2017, exacerbating the deep economic and humanitarian crisis Venezuela was already experiencing

Its economy shrank 70 per cent in a decade, described by some academics as the worst collapse outside of war in modern history.

As it celebrates 215 years of independence, the ongoing regime continues to face serious tests.

Rodriguez announced a new military unit for emergency and disaster management in the wake of the twin quakes.

It’s a move likely to enrage earthquake victims who are returning to damaged homes to salvage what they can, and who say they simply can’t afford to start over.

But some, like Alida Hernandez, still hang on to hope.

“I have all the certainty that good times are coming for Venezuela.”

Tragic Pub Fire Claims 27 Lives as Guests Evacuate Smoke-Filled Building

In a tragic turn of events early Monday, a fierce fire engulfed a nightclub in Bangkok, claiming the lives of at least 27 individuals and leaving many others injured. As the chaos unfolded, patrons desperately sought to escape the smoke-filled establishment, authorities reported.

The Na Ladprao pub, situated in the northern part of Thailand’s bustling capital, became the site of the deadly blaze around midnight. According to information from The Associated Press, rescuers were quick to respond.

Courageous first responders captured the dramatic scene on video, revealing flames consuming the building’s front while thick, black smoke filled the air, forcing people to flee for their lives.

Thankfully, firefighters were able to bring the devastating inferno under control within approximately 30 minutes, allowing the remaining patrons to evacuate safely, as reported by The Associated Press.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said at the scene that 27 people were killed and that several injured victims were taken to a hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A musician performing at the pub told Anutin he saw smoke coming from a circuit breaker near the stage shortly before the power went out, the prime minister said.

Moments later, an explosion was heard, and thick smoke spread through the venue, The Associated Press reported.

Many of the victims were located in restrooms at the back of the pub, Anutin said.

San Francisco 49ers’ Trent Taylor Bids Farewell to NFL: A Career Retrospective

0

With just weeks left before the San Francisco 49ers kick off their training camp for the new season, they’ll have to adjust to the absence of a significant player from their wide receiver roster.

On Sunday, Trent Taylor took to social media to announce his retirement from professional football, a move subsequently confirmed by the 49ers through an official statement.

Taylor shared the news of his retirement in a heartfelt photo featuring his wife, Sarah, alongside 49ers standout tight end George Kittle and Kittle’s wife, Claire.

Sarah echoed the announcement by reposting the image on her social media, infusing it with a touch of nostalgia.

“Ended the journey with the same ones we started it with,” she wrote, paying tribute to the supportive circle that has surrounded them.

Four people embracing and smiling for a photo, with two men in hats and two women, one wearing a red jersey.

Taylor was drafted by the 49ers with the 177th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2017 draft — the same draft and round in which the 49ers chose their all-pro tight end, Kittle.

While he never developed into a star receiver, Taylor’s best season came as a rookie when he finished with 43 catches for 430 yards and two touchdowns — all career-highs. Injuries derailed his time in San Francisco when he missed the entire 2019 season with a lingering foot injury that required offseason surgery and suffered subsequent setbacks.

After three seasons in the Bay Area (2017, ’18 and ’20), Taylor left the Bay Area and played two seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals. He played his 2023 season with the Bears before returning to San Francisco for the 2024 season. He didn’t play for the 49ers in 2025 as an unknown injury placed him on injured reserve, causing him to miss the whole year.

Although injuries may have limited his growth as a receiver, Taylor emerged as a successful punt return man throughout his career.

Photos Capture Lindsey Graham Leaving Home in a Wheelchair

0

Stunning images have captured the distressing moment when Senator Lindsey Graham was urgently taken from his home in Washington DC on a stretcher, shortly before news of his sudden passing emerged.

The 71-year-old senator was photographed lying on a gurney as emergency personnel administered crucial life-saving procedures on a Saturday evening. These images were shared by TMZ.

As paramedics hurriedly transported the gurney into a nearby ambulance bound for George Washington University Hospital, the senator appeared to have been intubated.

According to several reports, a 911 alert was made for a ‘cardiac arrest’ from Graham’s residence at approximately 8:30 p.m. Following the call, a substantial number of emergency responders converged on the scene outside his home.

Police scanner recordings acquired by The Washington Post revealed that, roughly 25 minutes after the distress call, first responders were already performing CPR on the senator, who was experiencing cardiac arrest.

By the early hours of Sunday, Graham’s office announced he had ‘passed away from a brief and sudden illness.’

His cause of death has since been revealed to be ‘Aortic Dissection due to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease.’ That means that plaque buildup on his heart hardened and weakened the aortic walls, causing a tear in the inner wall of the aorta.

‘The death certificate will be PENDING until all the toxicological and microscopic testing are finalized, and at that point the death certificate will be updated to reflect the cause of death and appropriately classify the manner of death,’ Graham’s spokesperson said in a statement just before 5pm.

In the hours before his death, the senator – a vocal supporter of US involvement in conflicts abroad, including both the Russia-Ukraine war and the Iran clashes – spoke with President Donald Trump and brushed off calls to see a doctor.

He talked with the president about his recent trip to Ukraine and the Russian sanctions bill he wanted the Senate to vote on, as Trump told Graham about his planned strikes on Iran, Axios reports.

An unidentified person who spoke with Graham in the moments after, told the outlet he complained he was feeling unwell.

When the person then urged Graham to immediately seek medical attention, the Republican from South Carolina said he would do so on Sunday morning after his scheduled appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press.

He then joked, ‘I can’t die now. I still need to do the Russian sanctions, get Iran sorted out and do Israeli-Saudi normalization,’ according to the outlet.

Questions had swirled about what may have caused the Republican’s ‘sudden’ death after agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation were spotted at Graham’s residence.

Director Kash Patel had said his agency was providing all necessary resources for the probe.

Amidst the July 4th recess break in Washington, DC this past week, Graham travelled to Ukraine, met with President Volodymyr Zelensky, and even visited a drone facility which was later destroyed by the Russians.

Graham has also been targeted by Iranian leaders. An Iranian State TV host noted in a Sunday broadcast that she congratulated ‘the Iranian people on the death [of] U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who has been sent to hell.’

Political commentators, liberal and conservative alike, stepped up with their own theories about Graham’s cause of death.

Does Lindsey Graham’s sudden death raise more questions about politics or about health transparency?

Megan Mobbs, Director of the Center for American Safety and Security at the Independent Women’s Forum, a conservative think tank, noted on X that ‘cardiac arrest tells us how his life ended. It does not tell us why his heart stopped.’

She also added that, ‘given the threat environment, the identities of America’s adversaries, and Senator Graham’s prominent role confronting them, the American people deserve certainty.’

‘That means a complete forensic autopsy, preservation of all relevant biological specimens, comprehensive toxicology and histology, and consultation with federal law enforcement and counterintelligence authorities,’ Mobbs concluded.

Conservative commentator Matt Van Swol shared a video of Graham on X from Ukraine this last week, noting, ‘I’m sorry, but Lindsey Graham dying out of the blue like this doesn’t make any sense at all.’

‘We have him on camera yesterday looking perfectly healthy. None of this is making any sense,’ Van Swol said.

Right-wing journalist Laura Loomer called for an ‘investigation,’ into Graham’s death, especially as Russian president Vladimir ‘Putin’s advisor Alexander Dugin called for Lindsey Graham to be ‘flattened’ exactly 4 months ago.’

While several figures were quick to assume foreign involvement in Graham’s death, others pointed to medical explanations.

Townhall columnist Dustin Grage shared that he was ‘told by a source in South Carolina that Senator Lindsey Graham has dealt with blood pressure issues since his 40s,’ also noting that, ‘His father also died of cardiac arrest at age 69.’

‘I know the conspiracy theories won’t stop, but sometimes life just happens. Not everything is a conspiracy,’ Grage added.

Top conservative talk radio host Dana Loesch commented on Grage’s post, noting that she agreed with his sentiment that Graham’s death appeared to be ‘sudden, but cardiac issues usually are.’

Trump shared a tribute to the late Senator on Truth Social shortly after the announcement was made.

‘Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad!,’ Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Graham was one of Trump’s closest allies in the US Senate, consistently voting to enact the President’s agenda. The White House has lowered the flags to half-mast in his honor.

The senator was also a staunch supporter of Ukraine and Israel, and he advised the President on foreign policy matters pertaining to Russia and Iran.

In late March 2025, just a little more than a month after Trump took office, the President posted a lengthy endorsement of Graham, referring to the senator as ‘a wonderful friend.’

Vice President JD Vance posted his own lengthy tribute to Graham on Sunday, with whom he spent two years as colleagues in the US Senate, specifically adding that Graham ‘fought like hell for the things he believed in, and he was just as willing to go to bat for you when it counted.’

Congressman Jim Clyburn, the only Democrat representing South Carolina in Washington, also offered his condolences, sharing that their ‘political relationship was sometimes partisan and passionate, but always pleasant and productive on behalf of the people of South Carolina.’

Early Week Storms Set the Stage for a Warm-Up

ORLANDO, Fla. – Central Florida is gearing up for another week beginning with showers and thunderstorms, only to have Saharan Dust sweep in, bringing with it drier air and rising temperatures.

Tonight

Earlier-than-expected showers and storms, marked by robust intensity, have already moved through the region, stabilizing the atmosphere. The fiercest weather has passed, leaving scattered light rain across Central Florida until sunset. After 9 p.m., the likelihood of rain diminishes, leading to a dry night with temperatures settling in the mid to upper 70s.

Monday

Scattered storms expected Monday afternoon.

Moisture lingering in the atmosphere will take center stage again on Monday, temporarily overshadowing the arrival of Saharan Dust. This sets the stage for an afternoon with a moderate chance of showers and thunderstorms, particularly from the west to the east. The likelihood of rain is higher in northern areas, as the dust works its way from the south, starting to reduce the existing moisture. Despite the dusty conditions, there remains a 40-50% chance of storms, albeit with less coverage compared to Sunday afternoon’s heavy showers. Expect temperatures to climb into the low 90s before cooling breezes from the storms offer some relief.

Mid-Week

A thicker plume of dust expected for Central Florida to start the week.

Saharan Dust shows out in full force by mid-week, alongside a ridge of high pressure building over the state in the upper levels of the atmosphere.

Highs vs heat indices for Central Florida this week.

This pair together spells a drier and hotter pattern for Central Florida. Temperatures return to the mid-upper 90s with lower rain chances. Air quality will also be on the downward trend as this plume of dust is noticeably thicker than previous spells.

Saharan Dust lowers air quality this week for Central Florida.

Emergency Dispatch Audio Details Response Prior to Lindsey Graham’s Passing Announcement

0

On Saturday night, emergency dispatch audio reviewed by News Media revealed a swift response to Senator Lindsey Graham’s residence in Washington, D.C. First responders were sent to the scene due to a call reporting cardiac arrest. The next morning, the senator’s office announced his death.

The radio traffic from District of Columbia Fire and EMS detailed the initial dispatch arriving just after 8 p.m. local time. Initial reports specified the reason for the call as cardiac arrest at Graham’s address.

As emergency units made their way to the location, dispatchers informed them that the caller had stated the front door would be unlocked. However, upon arrival, they found the door was firmly locked and no one answered from inside. Consequently, the first responders requested backup from the Metropolitan Police Department to assist in gaining entry.

Approximately 20 to 25 minutes following the initial dispatch, radio communications confirmed that CPR was being administered by the emergency crew members working inside the senator’s home. Notably, the audio recordings did not mention Graham by name nor did they provide any specifics regarding the patient’s condition.

In subsequent radio traffic, authorities classified the situation as a “Capitol Police matter only,” reflecting its sensitive nature. The final relevant update over the radio was logged shortly after 9:30 p.m.

The dispatch recordings provide few additional details about what responders encountered inside the residence or what medical care, if any, was provided before Graham’s death.

Graham’s office later announced the 71-year-old senator died Saturday evening following a “brief and sudden” illness.

“On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness,” his office wrote in a statement.

“Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period,” the statement continued.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia released preliminary findings on Sunday suggesting Graham died from an aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

“The preliminary examination findings were: Aortic Dissection due to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease,” according to the medical examiner’s office.

Officials added Graham’s death certificate will remain pending until toxicology and microscopic testing are complete.

“The death certificate will be PENDING until all the toxicological and microscopic testing are finalized and at that point the death certificate will be updated to reflect the cause of death and appropriately classify the manner of death,” the medical examiner’s office said.

News Media has reached out to DC Fire and EMS and the U.S. Capitol Police for additional information about the emergency response.

President Donald Trump paid tribute to Graham in a Truth Social post Saturday night, calling the longtime South Carolina lawmaker “a true American Patriot.”

“Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead!” Trump wrote. “He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad!”

Graham was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002 and took office in 2003 after serving four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He won re-election three times and was seeking a fifth Senate term after winning the Republican primary last month.

He served as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and sat on the Appropriations, Judiciary, and Environment and Public Works committees.

The longtime lawmaker had just met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Friday and was scheduled to appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday morning.

Beyond Congress, Graham served for 33 years in the U.S. Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, retiring as a colonel in 2015.

An Air Force lawyer, he served in Germany during the Cold War, was called to active duty during the Gulf War and later completed multiple Reserve deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan during congressional recesses.
