Norway and England Clash in World Cup Quarter-Final: Live Updates

0

As we anticipate tonight’s 10 p.m. kickoff, let’s delve into a heartfelt story featuring ex-England striker Alan Shearer.

Shearer recently made a memorable gesture to his local community by surprising Newcastle Panthers Football Club with brand new training kits. Remarkably, the Panthers are the sole LGBTQIA+ inclusive football club in the North-East.

Moreover, the Panthers had already benefited this year from a grassroots grant via the Cash4Clubs program, a £500,000 initiative by Flutter that supported 250 community clubs across the UK and Ireland. The club received a special video message from Shearer himself, who unveiled their new training attire funded by Flutter.

In the message, Shearer enthusiastically stated, ‘Newcastle Panthers FC, I’m thrilled to announce you as one of the 250 grassroots sports clubs awarded a Cash4Clubs grant this year.’

He further explained, ‘This initiative is part of Flutter’s £500,000 commitment to grassroots sports. The grant celebrates your remarkable efforts in unifying individuals, promoting active lifestyles among adults, and fostering the growth of community football.’

‘I’m gutted I can’t be there in person.  But I’m delighted to tell you that, in addition to your grant, Flutter have bought you a new kit – and they’ve donated the sponsorship of it to The Alan Shearer Foundation – meaning you’ll play with that logo on your strip, raising awareness of the work we do in helping profoundly disabled children and adults in our area.  I hope you’ll wear it with Pride.’

Top class from Shearer and from Flutter because it’s tournaments like the World Cup that inspire the next generation to want to get out and play and giving them a helping hand en route to doing so is key to developing the next batch of stars.

Newcastle Panthers Football Club, the only LGBTQIA+ friendly football team in the North-East, were recipients of a grassroots grant from the Cash4Clubs programme – a £500,000 scheme funded by Flutter which supported 250 community clubs across the UK and Ireland this year.

DHS Chief Mullin: Endless Opportunities Await You in America

In celebration of America 250, we present American Tributes, a remarkable section featuring exclusive videos from members of Congress, the Cabinet, and the Administration. All videos are united by a central theme: a heartfelt love for our nation.

As America gears up to mark its 250th year, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin emphasized to – News that people worldwide flock to America, drawn by the ability to achieve the unimaginable—not the other way around.

“Take a moment to consider my position: I’m here in the heart of the nation’s capital, serving in the president’s cabinet, despite not being of royal lineage,” Mullin remarked, highlighting the remarkable nature of his journey.

“Politics was never part of my family’s history. We come from a small rural community in Westville, Oklahoma, and my heritage is Cherokee. My ancestors were relocated to this area during the forced marches of the late 1830s,” he shared.

Sworn into his cabinet role this March, the Trump administration member reflected, “In America, there are no limits to what you can achieve. It’s all about the sacrifices you’re willing to make. Instead of complaining or merely wishing, it’s about dedication, because here, no one imposes limits on your potential.”

The former congressman and senator continued, “You can achieve at whatever level of sacrifice you want to make, and that’s what’s great, because everybody can truly live the American dream.”

“That’s why people flood our borders, trying to get in – not the opposite direction,” he added.

Uncovering Hollywood Legend: The ’70s Show Star Who Also Thrilled in RoboCop and Rambo

    0

A familiar face from the world of 1980s and 1990s cinema was recently seen enjoying a leisurely walk under the sunny skies of Los Angeles.

The actor, who was already well into middle age by the time he made his mark in Hollywood, gained fame with his menacing portrayal of a crime lord in the classic film, RoboCop.

Over the years, he showcased his talent in enduring films such as Dead Poets Society and A Time to Kill, and even starred alongside Sylvester Stallone in Rambo III.

However, one of his most cherished roles was on the sitcom That ’70s Show, where he shared the screen with a youthful cast that included Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis.

Spotted in Southern California this week at 83, he still exuded vitality and energy, although he used a cane to support his step.

Can you guess who he is?

He is none other than Kurtwood Smith, who remains beloved by fans as the formidably gruff patriarch Red Forman on That ’70s Show.

With Debra Jo Rupp as his wife Kitty, Smith formed part of an iconic TV couple throughout the sitcom’s run from 1998 to 2006.

Their family included their children Eric (Topher Grace) and Laurie (first Lisa Robin Kelly, then Christina Moore) and their adopted son Hyde (Danny Masterson).

Kurtwood Larson Smith was born in Wisconsin in July 1943, less than two years before his father was killed in the Second World War.

Although he grew up in the Los Angeles suburbs, he summered in Wisconsin on his grandparents’ farm, which ‘was a great way to grow up,’ he reflected.

His interest in showbiz was ignited in college, when he grew sick of his studies and alighted on the idea: ‘You know what? Maybe I should try an acting class.’

Once he played a scene, he thought: ‘Oh, I like this. I know what I’m doing here. I feel comfortable with this,’ he shared with Smashing Interviews.

Smith began his career on the stage in the San Francisco Bay Area, both in repertory and at a Shakespeare festival he regarded as ‘my real training ground.’

One summer in the 1970s, he acted in three plays with a young theater student he already ‘knew was going places’ called Robin Williams.

In 1987, Smith achieved his big break in Hollywood with the role of the ruthless mob boss Clarence Boddicker in Paul Verhoeven’s classic sci-fi picture RoboCop.

Boddicker commits the grisly murder of policeman Alex Murphy (Peter Weller), who is subsequently reconstructed into a cyborg and launched back into the world of law enforcement to apprehend the villainous gang.

A couple of years ago, Smith revealed that during the movie’s famous riot scene, his jacket actually caught alight in real life and had to be hurriedly torn off him, for which he earned an extra $400 in stunt pay, on The Rich Eisen Show.

In 1988 he played a US Embassy field operative who helps Sylvester Stallone’s title character in Rambo III, which placed its lead in the Soviet-Afghan War.

One year later he featured as the father of Robert Sean Leonard’s lead character Neil in the boarding school drama Dead Poets Society.

The authoritarian parenting of Smith’s character drives his son to seek a mentor in the shape of the kindly English teacher played by none other than Robin Williams.

Smith recalled Williams as a ‘very sweet and wonderful guy’ whose genuine temperament was much more similar to that of his gentle Dead Poets Society character than the manic comic persona he adopted as Mork on Happy Days.

‘If it was you and a couple of people, he was very sweet and down-to-earth, but he’d bring in three, four, five people and bang! He’s on,’ Smith remembered.

His career as a top-flight character actor continued through the 1990s with such films as the John Grisham adaptation A Time to Kill, a legal drama about racism starring Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, Samuel L Jackson and Kevin Spacey.

Smith played the Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, amid a cast that included both Donald and Kiefer Sutherland as well as a then-unknown Octavia Spencer as a nurse.

In 1998 he began playing his best-remembered role of Red on That ’70s Show – the father of the Wisconsin family whose garage plays host to the group of friends played by such names as Wilmer Valderrama, Laura Prepon, Kutcher and Kunis.

Red was particularly adored by fans for his propensity to issue various rephrased versions of a threat to put his foot in someone’s rear end.

Another one of his frequently quoted bon mots was one to Eric: ‘Son, you don’t have bad luck. The reason bad things happen to you is because you’re a dumba**.’

Although the show ended in 2006, Smith retained a warm bond with a number of his castmates with – at one point – controversial results.

In 2023, after Danny Masterson was convicted of raping two women, Smith joined a claque of his That ’70s Show co-stars including Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Debra Jo Rupp in pleading unsuccessfully for mercy from the judge.

Apart from That ’70s Show and its short-lived Netflix spin-off That ’90s Show, Smith’s TV career has included guest shots on such shows as The X-Files, various Star Trek programs, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Everybody Loves Raymond, Malcolm in the Middle, 24, Robot Chicken, Suits, Rick and Morty and The Simpsons.

From 2017 through 2020 he also held a recurring role on The Ranch, a Netflix sitcom that reunited Kutcher and Masterson as brothers.

Top 5 Knee-Boosting Morning Exercises for Seniors That Outperform Gym Routines

    0

Experiencing weak knees when you wake up? Kickstart your morning with these five movements recommended by fitness trainers.

    >

Having strong knees can make your entire day more manageable. They play a crucial role in every activity, from climbing stairs and walking around the neighborhood to simply standing up from a chair. Incorporating a dedicated morning routine can offer your legs an early workout, enhancing knee support before you dive into your daily tasks.

Knee strength extends beyond the joint itself. The quadriceps wrap around it, hamstrings influence leg movement, calves pass over it, and hips ensure smooth knee alignment. By targeting the muscles that stabilize and surround the knee, you provide comprehensive support to the joint from all angles.

In my experience coaching adults in knee strengthening, gradual progress is as crucial as the exercises themselves. Begin with comfortable movements, use aids for better control, and increase difficulty only once you master the basics. For instance, a higher platform can gradually lead to deeper squats, and a supported split squat can evolve into an unsupported one. Patience in progression fosters both confidence and strength.

These five morning exercises lay the groundwork through intentional bending, stepping, one-legged activities, calf toning, and hip stabilization. Practicing them two to four mornings a week, with focused repetitions, will allow your knees to gain strength rep by rep.

    Wall Sit

Wall sits train the quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, and core while giving your knees a steady, supported strength challenge. Holding the position maintains tension in the thighs without requiring much movement, which makes it a great early step for building confidence with knee loading. Start with a higher wall sit and gradually work toward a deeper position as your legs get stronger.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, core.

    How to Do It:

    1. Stand with your back against a wall.
    2. Walk your feet forward slightly.
    3. Slide down until your knees bend to a comfortable angle.
    4. Keep your back supported and your chest lifted.
    5. Hold the position while breathing steadily.
    6. Press through your feet to stand back up.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 20 to 40-second holds. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Higher wall sits, wall sit marches, ball-squeeze wall sits.

Form Tip: Keep your knees tracking with your toes and press through your whole foot.

If You Can Complete These 3 Standing Exercises After 60, You’re Fitter Than Most

    Low Step-Up

Low step-ups train your quads, glutes, hamstrings, calves, and core through a movement that carries directly into daily life. The lead leg has to push your body upward while the knee stays aligned over the foot, making this a practical strength builder for stairs and curbs. A low step gives you plenty of room to focus on control before increasing the height.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, calves, core.

    How to Do It:

    1. Stand facing a low, sturdy step or bottom stair.
    2. Place your whole foot on the step.
    3. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
    4. Press through your lead foot to stand tall on the step.
    5. Lower back down with control.
    6. Complete all reps, then switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per side. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Assisted step-ups, slow step-ups, low box step-ups.

Form Tip: Let the leg on the step do the lifting rather than pushing hard off the floor.

    Supported Split Squat

Supported split squats give each leg focused work, while a wall, counter, or chair helps you stay balanced. The front thigh and glute handle most of the effort, while the back leg helps you maintain a stable stance. This is a strong progression from simple squats because it trains knee control on one side at a time.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, hips, core.

    How to Do It:

    1. Stand beside a wall or sturdy chair for light support.
    2. Step one foot back into a split stance.
    3. Brace your core and keep your torso tall.
    4. Bend both knees and lower straight down.
    5. Press through your front foot to return to standing.
    6. Complete all reps, then switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per side. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Short-range split squats, assisted reverse lunges, tempo split squats.

Form Tip: Keep your front heel grounded and lower straight down instead of drifting forward.

4 Standing Exercises That Flatten Apron Belly Faster Than Gym Sessions After 60

    Standing Calf Raise

Standing calf raises train the calves, ankles, and lower-leg muscles that cross the knee and help support each step. Strong calves give your legs more spring during walking and help control the ankle as you move through stairs, hills, and uneven ground. This simple exercise adds an important piece to a complete knee-strength routine.

Muscles Trained: Calves, ankles, lower legs.

    How to Do It:

    1. Stand tall near a wall or chair for light support.
    2. Place your feet hip-width apart.
    3. Press through the balls of your feet to lift your heels.
    4. Pause briefly at the top.
    5. Lower your heels with control.
    6. Repeat for the full set.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 12 to 15 reps. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Single-leg calf raises, slower calf raises, calf raise holds.

Form Tip: Lift straight up and down without rolling your feet outward.

    Lateral Band Walk

Lateral band walks train the outer hips, glutes, thighs, and core. Strong hips help keep your knees moving in a cleaner line when you squat, step, or walk, which makes this exercise especially useful for building lower-body control. A light mini band around the legs provides enough resistance to wake up your hips without needing a heavy setup.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, outer hips, quadriceps, core.

    How to Do It:

    1. Place a light resistance band above your knees or around your ankles.
    2. Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
    3. Bend your knees slightly and brace your core.
    4. Step one foot out to the side.
    5. Bring your other foot in without letting the band go slack.
    6. Continue for the full set, then repeat in the other direction.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 steps per direction. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Bodyweight lateral steps, lower-band walks, monster mini-band walks, tempo band walks.

Form Tip: Keep your toes facing forward and maintain gentle tension on the band throughout each step.

5 Standing Exercises That Restore Hip Strength This Week, No Gym Needed After 60

How to Build Knee Strength After 60

Knee strength builds best when the surrounding muscles get regular, progressive work. These exercises train the thighs, hips, calves, and lower legs from multiple angles, so the knees have a stronger support system during everyday movement.

    • Start with control: Choose a range and variation that lets each rep feel steady. Good movement creates a strong foundation.
    • Progress gradually: Add a few reps, increase a hold, use less support, or move to a slightly lower squat or higher step when the current version feels solid.
    • Train the hips and calves: Strong hips help guide the knee, while strong calves support each step and push-off.
    • Use both legs evenly: Single-leg exercises help each side build its own strength and control.
    • Make it a morning habit: A short routine two to four days per week can build useful strength without needing a full gym session.

Your knees benefit from steady strength work around the whole lower body. Build the muscles above, below, and around the joint, and everyday movement can feel more supported, more controlled, and more confident.

Evaluating Ukraine’s Strategic Energy Strikes: Impact on Russian Frontlines and Putin’s Response

    0

Ukraine’s escalating efforts to target President Vladimir Putin’s oil industry are making significant ripples across Russia. The country, known as one of the largest global energy powerhouses, now faces a dilemma with reduced diesel exports and a need to import fuel. This has resulted in fuel shortages that stretch from Crimea, currently under Russian occupation, to inner cities across the nation.

Within Russia, the impact is increasingly tangible. Former opposition politician and commentator Maxim Katz noted that many Russians are now confronting the direct effects of the ongoing conflict, possibly for the first time. These shortages could become a particularly sensitive issue as the nation heads towards State Duma elections slated for September.

“This marks the first instance where Russians are experiencing the tangible effects of the war in their everyday lives—not just through rising fuel costs, but through its scarcity,” Katz mentioned in an interview conducted over Zoom from Israel, where he currently resides in exile. “The inability to purchase fuel is a significant issue for Russia,” he emphasized.

On June 18, 2026, plumes of smoke and flames were seen billowing over Moscow following a Ukrainian drone strike on the Kapotnya oil refinery and other locations within the Russian capital. (East2West)

Katz further explained that while elections in Russia may not be genuinely free or competitive, they still play a crucial role for Putin. They serve to demonstrate public support to regional governors, business leaders, and other influential figures within the elite.

“If everybody sees in September that he has 20% support or 10% support, then questions begin about why he should appoint governors or control the system,” Katz said. “That is something he does not want to deal with.”

The fuel crisis, Katz argued, threatens Putin’s effort to portray himself as fully in control and to keep the cost of the war away from ordinary Russians.

“Putin tried to convince everybody that Moscow would continue to live its regular life and nobody would see the war,” Katz said. “It was his war, not the war of ordinary Russians. But when the war comes home, this is a completely different story, and it changes the equation.”

Katz also pointed to the striking reversal of Russia — historically one of the world’s largest exporters of oil and refined products — seeking fuel supplies from abroad. Reuters reported that Moscow had approached Kazakhstan about importing approximately 50,000 metric tons of gasoline after refinery outages reduced Russian gasoline output by roughly 25% from a year earlier.

The campaign reached a new milestone this week when Ukrainian drones struck the Omsk refinery, Russia’s largest, roughly 1,700 miles from Ukrainian-held territory. The facility temporarily halted processing after the attack, according to Reuters. Days later, another strike shut Russia’s Saratov refinery for the third time this year.

The expanding crisis raises a central question for Ukraine and its allies: Can attacks on the infrastructure that powers Russia’s military and economy alter President Vladimir Putin’s calculations — or will the Kremlin continue shielding its war effort while shifting the burden onto ordinary Russians?

“They have to buy fuel from Kazakhstan now,” Katz said. “Russia is one of the biggest exporters of oil and oil products and always has been. This is crazy.”

Still, Katz cautioned that the Kremlin would likely continue prioritizing military supplies even as civilian shortages worsened.

“He will find the fuel for the tanks. That is not the issue,” Katz said. “The issue is his grip on Russia.”

Retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, former commander of U.S. European Command and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, said the effects are already becoming significant.

“Without question, Ukraine’s campaign against Russia’s oil and energy infrastructure is having a real and growing impact on the Russian homeland,” Breedlove told News Media. “The reported reductions in fuel production are significant — close to a third by some estimates.”

“These strikes are beginning to seriously impact not just the economy but the Kremlin’s ability to sustain its war effort and military operations,” he added. “When Ukraine is able to hit large, high-value energy targets deep inside Russian territory, that changes the equation.”

“Russia cannot effectively defend every refinery and energy facility across their enormous territory, and that is the core problem for Moscow,” Breedlove said. “Every asset they deploy to defend their infrastructure are assets not deployed to the frontlines.”

Moscow has already taken emergency measures. Russia banned diesel exports through the end of July as drone attacks forced unplanned refinery shutdowns and reduced domestic supplies. Seaborne exports of diesel and gasoline fell 39% in June compared with May and 46% from the previous year, according to Reuters.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, said American intelligence has played an important role in helping Kyiv penetrate Russia’s extensive air-defense network.

“You always have to give credit to the United States,” Korniychuk told News Media. “U.S. intelligence is helping Ukrainian missiles and drones avoid Russian anti-missile defense.”

The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, said in a 2025 report that “The U.S. will provide Ukraine with intelligence for long-range missile strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure.” Reuters, citing the Financial Times, also reported that “U.S. intelligence has helped Kyiv strike important Russian energy assets, including oil refineries, far beyond the front line, the newspaper said, citing unnamed Ukrainian and U.S. officials familiar with the campaign.”

News Media reached out to the State Department and the White House to confirm the reports and the Ukrainian ambassador’s claims.

Korniychuk said the strikes are creating serious pressure inside the Russian system, even if they have not yet persuaded Putin to change course.

“The majority of the Russian leadership understands that this is a crucial problem, but Putin personally does not,” he said. “The distance between him and the rest of the Russian leadership is growing tremendously. Even people he has trusted for many years understand that this is going nowhere, but that will not necessarily bring Putin to the same conclusion.”

Retired Lt. Gen. Richard Newton, former U.S. Air Force assistant vice chief of staff, argued that the broader strategic picture is shifting in Ukraine’s favor.

“Throughout the conflict, the vast majority of the Russian homeland has been a sanctuary,” Newton said. “However, over the last several months, Ukrainian drone attacks have reached deep inside Russia — up to 1,500 miles recently.”

Newton said the pressure was arriving as Western support strengthened.

“That is a credit to President Zelenskyy, his military leadership and Ukraine’s defense industrial base,” he said. “And it comes at the right time, with Europe now providing military capabilities and financial resources — and now, with renewed public support from President Trump.”

Yet the strategy has limits. Russia continues to generate billions in energy revenue beyond the reach of Ukrainian drones.

Urgewald, a Germany-based nonprofit environmental and human-rights organization analysis of Kpler cargo data found that the European Union received 114 of the 118 cargoes shipped from Russia’s Yamal LNG project between January and May 2026 — about 97% of the project’s exports. The shipments totaled 8.37 million metric tons and had an estimated value of roughly $5.7 billion.

“Current trends show EU payments for Russian Yamal LNG are on course to reach almost $7 billion in the first half of 2026 alone,” Alexander Kirk, a sanctions campaigner at Urgewald, told News Media. “These dollars support Russia’s war economy and help sustain Moscow’s aggression against Ukraine, including the drone and missile warfare terrorizing Ukrainian cities.”

The figures capture the dual reality confronting Kyiv: Ukraine can damage refineries, disrupt domestic fuel supplies and force Moscow to divert resources, while Russia continues earning substantial revenue from global energy markets.

Amb. Korniychuk said Zelenskyy had given the military 40 days to substantially change the situation.

Katz cautioned that there was no way to predict whether Putin’s system was approaching collapse, but said authoritarian regimes can appear stable until they unravel with extraordinary speed.

He compared that uncertainty to the final months of the Soviet Union.

“Nobody before the August Putsch could even think that in three months from now there would be no Soviet Union,” Katz said. “Systems like this — this is one of their common things — collapse quick.”

For now, Ukraine’s strikes have not halted Russian military operations or forced Putin to negotiate. But they have reached deep into Russia, strained its fuel system and undermined the Kremlin’s effort to keep the war distant from its population.

The question being asked by analystsis no longer whether Ukraine can hit Russia’s economic engine, but how much sustained pressure that engine — and Putin’s political system — can withstand.

Ridley Scott’s ‘The Terror’ Gears Up for a Fourth Season as Producer Confirms Development

    0

In the wake of the haunting third season of The Terror: Devil in Silver, fans might be thrilled to know that whispers of a new chapter in the beloved horror anthology series are already circulating.

David W. Zucker, the show’s producer, has unveiled that the groundwork for Season 4 has begun, with Scott Free Productions securing the rights to another book they are eager to bring to the screen.

In a conversation with ScreenRant, Zucker was questioned about whether the recent season marked the conclusion of a trilogy. His response hinted that the creative minds behind the series are already planning the next step.

“We just closed the deal on the book we’re gonna develop next,” Zucker confirmed.

While this is not an official renewal from AMC, and numerous challenges remain before a fourth season is confirmed, Zucker’s update reveals that early preparations are in motion. Enthusiasts of the show should stay tuned for more developments as this potential new season progresses.

Fans also shouldn’t expect the process to move overnight. The series has never operated on a traditional television schedule, with seven years separating Seasons 2 and 3 after development was slowed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the dual Hollywood strikes in 2023.

The anthology first debuted on AMC in 2018 with an adaptation of Dan Simmons’ novel The Terror. That season followed two British Royal Navy ships that became trapped in Arctic ice while searching for the Northwest Passage, only to find themselves hunted by a terrifying supernatural force.

Season 2, The Terror: Infamy, shifted the setting to a Japanese American internment camp during World War II, where an evil spirit preyed on those imprisoned there. The latest installment, The Terror: Devil in Silver, adapted Victor LaValle’s novel of the same name and brought the franchise into the present day with a psychological horror story set inside a psychiatric hospital hiding dark secrets.

Despite the lengthy hiatus between installments, the anthology hasn’t lost its critical edge. Devil in Silver currently holds a 95% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, continuing the series’ reputation as one of television’s strongest horror anthologies.

Exactly how many people tuned in, however, remains a mystery. AMC hasn’t released viewership numbers for the latest season, which premiered on AMC+ and Shudder rather than airing on AMC’s linear network. Depending on how a potential fourth season comes together—and who ultimately signs on creatively—it isn’t out of the question that the anthology could return to a more traditional release strategy.

For now, though, fans have reason to be optimistic. While an official renewal hasn’t arrived, Scott Free Productions is already searching for The Terror‘s next nightmare.

Neil the Seal’s Mischievous Adventures Conclude—For Now

    0

As Tasmania’s most famous inhabitant heads back to the ocean, wildlife specialists caution that Neil the Seal’s appearances are far from over.

Neil, a five-year-old elephant seal, was born on Tasmania’s peninsula in 2020 and consistently makes his way back to the area twice each year.

Even though elephant seals typically congregate in groups on sub-Antarctic islands of the Southern Ocean, an innate drive pushes Neil to return alone to the shores of his birthplace.

Stretching three metres in length and weighing nearly a tonne, Neil has become an online sensation. Tourists are drawn from across the globe to see the playful seal, who has a knack for effortlessly toppling fences and posts.

According to Dr. Kris Carlyon, the wildlife health and marine expert at Tasmania’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Neil’s solitary nature drives this unique behavior from the hefty, 1,000kg seal pup.

“At the moment, there’s a number of bollards that he likes interacting with,” Carlyon said.

“He’s got no other seals to play with, to joust with, to test his strength with — like he would be doing normally, so he chooses things to interact with.”

But in recent days, Neil’s been nowhere to be found. It seems his winter 2026 reign of terror has ended, and he’s now returned to the ocean after completing his annual moult.

    An elephant seal’s annual moult

While mainly relying on a thick layer of blubber to stay warm, elephant seals also have a fur coat that is shed and regrown each year.

While they’re in the ocean, the species’ blood flow is directed to the core of their bodies to keep their vital organs functioning. They come onto land to moult so they can redirect blood flow to their skin without their internal organs getting too cold.

Once on land, they first lose tiny flakes of old brown or yellow fur. As time passes, larger chunks of fur begin to shed, revealing the new silver fur underneath.

During the major shed, elephant seals can appear sick or diseased and often throw sand over their bodies to cool down.

While on land, most elephant seals fast and so lose excessive body weight. After shedding, they return to the ocean to hunt and rebuild their blubber reserve.

The moulting process takes anywhere between four and six weeks. Females typically moult between March and May, and males between June and late August.

So, while Neil might be gone for now, it’s expected he’ll return next winter.

A ‘wild seal, not a pet’

Ahead of Neil’s expected reappearance, wildlife experts like Carlyon are warning that Neil’s popularity could be putting him and others in danger.

“We have had some pretty silly behaviour [including] instances with people carrying their small babies up close to him and simply trying to get that shot for Instagram,” he told SBS News.

“Neil’s not inherently aggressive in the sense that some other animals might be. He’ll certainly defend his space, and if he feels threatened, he may lash out.”

The public has been urged to stay at least 20 metres away from Neil and keep their dogs on a leash and under control. They’ve also been told to not touch, feed or approach him, or block his access to water.

Carlyon said people need to remember that Neil is a “wild seal, not a pet”, warning that an incident could lead to Neil being relocated or even euthanised.

“Relocating wild seals is not a simple exercise. It involves sedation and transport, which can be stressful and carries inherent risks for the animal and the personnel involved,” he said.

Community members have banded together to launch a petition calling for greater protection of Neil, including the creation of restricted-access zones around Neil’s known habitats. The petition has garnered almost 79,000 signatures.

Despite the fuss and potential danger, Carlyon said Neil’s annual appearances are a great sign for Tasmania’s wildlife.

“Regardless of the resource burden and the challenges that Neil throws, we are pleased to see him and think that this could be part of some threatened species recovery.”

Tragic Private Plane Crash Claims Lives of Father and Son, Investigation Underway

    0

A tragic accident claimed the lives of an Oklahoma father and son as their plane went down on their return journey from a St. Louis Cardinals game, due to adverse weather conditions.

Jimmy Don Lewis, 48, and his 22-year-old son, Brayden Ty Lewis, were discovered deceased amidst the debris of their Beechcraft Baron 55 by emergency teams Friday morning.

Reports indicate that the aircraft likely crashed just before 11 p.m. on Thursday night near Waterloo, Illinois, according to information from KSDK.

Despite the late-night crash, rescue operations weren’t initiated until around 2:30 p.m. the following day, prompted by reports of a potential plane crash, as confirmed by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities, collaborating with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), worked diligently to pinpoint the search area and track the last known position of the aircraft.

Aerial search efforts were thwarted due to bad weather, not allowing crews to ‘safely conduct’ operations.

‘The Illinois State Police aircraft responded and conducted an aerial search utilizing thermal imaging technology; however, the weather conditions and cloud cover prevented crews from locating the aircraft,’ the sheriff’s department said.

Around 6am, the Waterloo Fire Command activated a drone search. Two hours later, the aircraft was located in a tree line near a rural field and the two men were confirmed to have died.

Police believe the pair ran into bad weather on their way home to West Siloam Springs, near the Oklahoma-Arkansas border, after the Cardinals game.

Flight data suggested the pair had tried to turn the aircraft in a possible ‘attempt to avoid the storm, before entering what appeared to be a descending spiral,’ the sheriff’s department said.

    ‘Radar contact was subsequently lost.’

The crash remains under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.

The Lewis family appeared to be an all-American family who loved to travel and recently welcomed a grandbaby.

Lewis’ fit wife, Jill, posted photos from several of the family’s trips, including a romantic European trip with her husband, where the pair visited Rome and Venice, Italy, among other cities, in May 2024.

Explore Declan Rice’s Personal Life with His Partner as He Dismisses Upgrade Rumors

In the thrilling journey of the 2026 World Cup, England’s defensive midfielder Declan Rice has a steadfast supporter in his partner, Lauren Fryer. The couple’s story began at the age of 17 and has since blossomed into a family. They share the joy of a three-year-old son, Jude. While Lauren and Jude are often seen cheering for Declan at his matches, the family opts for a more private life when away from the public eye.

Declan Rice recently stood up for his longtime partner against online trolls, emphatically stating, “My woman is the love of my life, and there is no better match for me.”

Dani Dyer, who celebrated her wedding with footballer Jarrod Bowen last year, has been vocal in defending Lauren amid the harsh online scrutiny. “For her, it was extremely challenging, facing online abuse, especially since she stays out of the spotlight,” the former Love Island contestant shared with The Mirror.

“It’s more difficult when you’re not part of the celebrity scene but have to endure personal attacks,” she continued. “That was tough for me to witness. Lauren is an exceptional mother who values her privacy.”

“No one deserves to endure such criticism. It was heartless,” Dani reflected. “We didn’t dwell much on it, but we focused on what an amazing person she is—kind, beautiful, and Declan’s cherished childhood love, clearly adored by him.”

Rising above the noise, Declan and Lauren have continued to go from strength to strength, and they were recently spotted enjoying a sweet moment at the World Cup. After England drew with Ghana last month, the Arsenal star was spotted heading into the stands where he chatted with a smiling Lauren and their son.
