Controversy Erupts as FIFA Rescinds USA Player Balogun’s Ban Following Trump Involvement

0

The FIFA World Cup was thrown into controversy as FIFA allowed USA striker Folarin Balogun to play against Belgium despite a red-card ban, following an intervention by United States President Donald Trump. The decision has sparked a heated debate within the tournament.

Balogun had faced missing the crucial Round of 16 match against Belgium due to a red card he received. This decision followed a video review that concluded he had stepped on a Bosnian defender’s foot during the USA’s 2-0 victory in the Round of 32.

According to FIFA regulations, a straight red card results in an automatic one-game suspension for the player involved, and teams are not permitted to appeal this decision.

In an unexpected turn of events, FIFA announced on Sunday that this suspension would be deferred for a year, without providing any specific reasons for this unusual measure.

Sources with knowledge of the situation informed news agencies Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Reuters that President Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino directly, requesting a review of Balogun’s penalty.

“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

The decision was immediately slammed by Belgian football officials, who released a statement saying they are “astonished” by a move that is in “direct contradiction” with FIFA’s own rules.

The Royal Belgian Football Association is “investigating all potential options” to “safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport,” it said.

“I didn’t know that at the FIFA World Cup, the 5th of July is now the 1st of April, and that it’s April Fool’s Day,” added Belgium coach Rudi Garcia, at a press conference.

Trump spoke with Infantino on Wednesday, the same day that the red card was given, sources told AFP on condition of anonymity.

US secretary of state Marco Rubio also publicly called for the card to be rescinded.

The decision to suspend the ban was taken by FIFA’s disciplinary committee.

‘We’re not the bad men’

Top scorer Balogun has been key to the USA’s progress in the tournament, netting three times, and his absence against Belgium would have been a blow to the team in the game in Seattle.

The stakes are huge for the co-hosts. Playing on home soil, a strong USA start to the tournament has raised expectations to fever-pitch levels among the American public.

The co-hosts are targeting a historic run to at least the quarter-finals, which they have not reached since 2002, or even further.

Balogun himself had said Friday the red card ban was “something I have to just accept.”

But USA players and officials welcomed the news on Monday.

“It’s a fair decision because it should have never been a red card,” said head coach Mauricio Pochettino, calling the punishment “too big” for an unintentional foul.

“It’s not that we are victims, but we are not the bad men, the mean ones here,” he said.

Star forward Christian Pulisic called the decision a “boost” while governing body US Soccer said it was “pleased.”

‘We are defending football’

In its statement, FIFA pointed to “article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code” which allows the suspension to be “suspended for a probationary period of one year”.

Balogun would serve the ban only if he commits another similar foul in the next year, it said.

There is some precedent for the decision.

Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo earned a three-game ban for an elbow during qualifying last year, but had two matches of his ban suspended.

The move, which allowed Ronaldo to play in Portugal’s World Cup opener, drew criticism at the time.

“We’re not defending the national team or the federation. We are defending football, whether it’s ethics or integrity,” said coach Garcia on Monday, as Belgium protested the latest U-turn.

Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said it was “a bit of a surprise” that Balogun was cleared to play just a day before the match.

“Had it been done earlier, we’d have been able to be mentally more prepared, perhaps.”

US Futures and Asian Stocks Show Mixed Results Amid Fall in Oil Prices as Exports Rise

TOKYO – On Monday, Asian markets and U.S. futures exhibited a mixed scene after the Wall Street holiday. A downturn in technology stocks led to declines in benchmarks in Tokyo and Seoul.

Oil saw a dip after OPEC+ revealed on Sunday that seven member nations will collectively enhance oil production by 188,000 barrels per day in August. This marks the fifth consecutive month of agreed production increases by OPEC+ members.

The nations committing to increased output include Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman.

Supply uncertainty remains as negotiations with Iran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz are paused due to the ongoing funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expected to last for several days.

Authorities in Florida apprehended a couple accused of leaving their small children alone in a hotel room while they indulged at the pool during Fourth of July celebrations. The arrest cast a shadow over their holiday festivities as the nation marked its 250th anniversary of independence.

Both Brian Nicholas Cannella, 43, and Allison Sirica Cannella, 40, are facing charges of child neglect, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office based in the Florida Keys. The charges were announced in a Facebook post.

Responding around 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office arrived at the Reefhouse Resort & Marina in Key Largo. The staff reported entering a room due to hearing a baby crying unattended. Police have not specified the ages of the children, only mentioning they were “young” and found alone in “nursery beds/cribs.”

Staff at the resort said they “eventually” found the Cannellas drinking alcoholic beverages at the pool, according to police.

Using surveillance video, witness statements and other investigative techniques, deputies were able to determine the couple had left the kids on their own for between 40 minutes and an hour.

Deputies notified the Department of Children and Family Services who came to the hotel and placed the children in the care of a family friend. They were not injured other than the apparent distress of being left alone, deputies said.

The suspects were arrested and taken to the Monroe County Jail, where they have since bonded out. It’s unclear when they are next slated to appear in court. A probable cause arrest affidavit was not immediately available.

FBI Suspects Ransom Notes Linked to Nancy Guthrie Are Forged, Says Official

In a perplexing twist in the case of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, the FBI now suspects that the ransom notes received afterwards were fabricated. An official within the investigation has shared this development.

Speaking under the veil of anonymity, this official conveyed to Reuters that investigators are skeptical about two ransom notes and another letter that purported to identify the kidnappers. They believe these communications lack credibility and are not directly linked to Guthrie’s actual kidnappers.

To test the legitimacy of the first ransom note, authorities decided to take a proactive step. They deposited a small sum into the specified cryptocurrency account mentioned in the letter. However, the funds remained untouched, raising further doubts about the note’s authenticity.

“None of the ransom notes are believed to be genuine,” the official stated, shedding light on the investigation’s current standing.

Reports from Reuters further confirmed this assessment, citing another informed law enforcement source who corroborated the FBI’s findings regarding the dubious nature of the ransom demands.

Oxygen reached out to the FBI for comment on the allegations, but did not receive an immediate reply.

The report comes just days after Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos expressed a similar doubt about the validity of the notes, specifically calling out a note received by TMZ claiming to be able to provide footage of the “main” suspect.

“I think the FBI has done a number of arrests for false or fake ransom notes,” Nanos said during a June 26 radio appearance on Arizona’s Buckmaster Show. “It’s a shame that happens, but I think we’re looking at one of those today.”

Pima County Sheriff’s Department Says There’s No New Updates in Nancy Guthrie Case

Five months after Nancy vanished, mystery still surrounds the 84-year-old’s disappearance.

The public information officer for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Angelica Carrillo told Oxygen that although there are no new updates to the case, law enforcement officers remain committed to finding out what happened to the mother of TODAY show cohost Savannah Guthrie.

“This case is an active and ongoing investigation,” she said. “Forensic analysis of DNA and video evidence remains underway.”

Carrillo added that “if and when there is a significant development in this case, it will be shared with the public.”

What Happened to Nancy Guthrie?

Authorities believe Nancy was likely taken from her home against her will sometime in the early morning hours of Jan. 31, after finding blood on the patio outside her house.

Nanos has said law enforcement officers also found evidence that the doorbell camera at the home was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. and motion was detected on the camera around 2:12 a.m.

The FBI later released images of a masked individual captured outside the home at the time, driving further speculation that the octogenarian was taken against her will.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke confirmed at a Feb. 5 press conference that a ransom note was sent to multiple media outlets in the aftermath of her disappearance, demanding payment and ordering the family to meet a Feb. 5 deadline or a secondary deadline of Feb. 9.

A second note was also sent to the media around that same time. According to details released last month by NBC News, that note claimed that Nancy was dead, but did not request any payment or offer an apology.

Then, TMZ reported June 26 that they had received an email from someone claiming to be able to identify the kidnappers and provide video of the “main guy” responsible and asked for bitcoin payment for the information.

It’s unclear what led authorities to believe the note was not credible.

Meanwhile, Savannah and her family continue to search for answers.

“Somebody knows something, and this is a new story today that is on your radar, but this is the life that my sister lives, that I live, that my brother lives, that our extended families live, that our children live, every day. And we are in agony” she said June 23 while addressing the case on TODAY. “We cannot be at peace.”

New ICE Facility Aims to Streamline Deportation Process for Families and Children

0

In a move designed to expedite deportations, the Trump administration is preparing to open a 528-bed facility in Alexandria, Louisiana, designated for migrant families and unaccompanied minors. Nestled beside an airport hub, this center is poised to mitigate logistical issues encountered when relocating children from diverse foster homes and shelters nationwide.

Previously, these challenges were starkly highlighted when Guatemalan children were abruptly removed from their accommodations, offered little time to prepare, and subsequently transported to Harlingen, Texas. There, they endured long hours on an airport tarmac, awaiting deportation. A federal judge ultimately intervened to halt their removal, underscoring the pressing need for an efficient system near airports to handle such situations.

While U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) refers to the new Alexandria facility as a “staging area” rather than a detention center, officials assure it will only accommodate individuals for a few days at the most. However, skepticism remains among immigration advocates, who recall instances where similar sites held children far longer than promised.

The prospect of prolonged stays and insufficient oversight at such facilities is a mounting concern for these advocates. Many argue that the new facility marks a significant shift in the way the federal government handles migrant children, potentially increasing the risks they face.

Leecia Welch, chief legal counsel at the nonprofit organization Children’s Rights, expressed apprehension over this development. Welch stated, “It’s an expansion of the deportation system in ways we haven’t seen before. There’s just so much that could go wrong with this facility.”

ICE has tapped a private prison company to run the deportation facility

Unaccompanied children who are in the U.S. without parents or close relatives are not taken to facilities overseen by ICE. Instead, the law says they must be swiftly placed in the care of state-licensed shelters and foster care programs.

Those are run by the Office of Refugee Resettlement in the Department of Health and Human Services. However, that agency isn’t involved in the Alexandria facility’s operation, according to a spokesperson at the airfield where it’s being built.

Instead, the facility would be run by a nonprofit arm of LaSalle Corrections, a private prison contractor, according to Ralph Hennessy, executive director of the England Airpark Authority. He said it could be operational as early as August.

ICE officials signed a contract late last month to build the facility at the former military base near Alexandria International Airport, roughly 175 miles (280 kilometers) northwest of New Orleans, Hennessy said.

Compass Connections, a Texas-based nonprofit that runs shelters for unaccompanied immigrant children, had originally been tapped to help operate the facility and laid out plans during a public presentation in February.

But the company’s president, Sonya Thompson, told the AP last week that it was no longer involved. She did not elaborate.

Officials have said the facility is for ‘self-deporting’ families

In public board meetings, airpark officials said the facility is a “humanitarian effort” for families that are “self-deporting.” Immigration advocates say families and unaccompanied children sometimes make that decision under pressure or because they don’t understand their options.

“These are people that are volunteering to go back home and they’re going back home as a family unit,” Hennessy told the AP.

The facility would sit next to the nation’s largest hub for deportations. More than 4,400 immigration enforcement flights came into and out of the Alexandria International Airport in 2025, according to data from the ICE Flight Monitor, an initiative of Human Rights First. ICE planning documents say families and children at the facility “are in the legal custody of ICE and can only be released at the direction of ICE.”

The agency has instructed contractors that families at the facility cannot be referred to as prisoners, detainees or inmates, records show. The agency ordered contractors to not use bars or cages when transporting families and unaccompanied children. The facility will not be required to engage in headcounts and should allow families to “wear their own clothes,” the agency added.

The private prison company runs other ICE detention centers

Louisiana-based LaSalle Corrections runs a range of private prisons and federal immigration detention centers throughout the South, including the “Louisiana Lockup” inside the state’s maximum-security prison in Angola.

The official contractor for the new ICE holding facility will be the company’s nonprofit arm, the LaSalle Family Foundation. According to its tax records, the nonprofit provides chaplain services and educational programming in correctional facilities.

However, LaSalle Corrections itself will be involved in operating the holding facility and ensuring compliance, the company’s chief financial officer, Tim Kurpiewski, wrote in an email reviewed by the AP.

LaSalle spokesperson Scott Sutterfield declined to comment.

The deaths of two detainees have been reported since April at a LaSalle-run ICE facility in the state.

Winn Correctional Center was also found in June to have violated standards governing environmental health and safety, food service, use-of-force, medical care and other subjects, according to the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General.

Neighbor Arrest Tied to Mysterious Disappearance of 11-Year-Old Girl and Tragic Death on Lake Erie

0

In Ohio, authorities have detained a woman following the mysterious vanishing of a young girl during a boating excursion on Lake Erie. A day later, another passenger was discovered dead in the water, as reported.

The disappearance of 11-year-old Angelique Cunningham occurred while she was on a nighttime boating trip on Lake Erie’s western waters with her neighbor, 41-year-old Kristen Gerrie, and 38-year-old Jonathan Ciha, whose body was tragically found the following day, according to reports by WTVG.

Kristen Gerrie was taken into custody and charged with child endangering on Friday as part of the ongoing investigation, reported the area’s ABC affiliate station.

Gerrie was in charge of overseeing Cunningham during their outing on the lake, which began at Meinke Marina in Jerusalem Township when she, Cunningham, and Ciha embarked on a boat trip.

According to reports, mere minutes after their departure, Cunningham disappeared, sparking a search for the missing girl.

Authorities suspended a search for the young girl on Friday evening after saying they had exhausted all resources to search for the pre-teen from Toledo.

The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department said that the search for Cunningham had moved to a recovery effort.

The body of a girl was discovered near the Lake Erie shoreline on Sunday, though officials have not yet confirmed the person’s identity, the outlet reported.

Ciha was found dead in the water on Thursday morning after a horrified boater called 911. A deputy coroner said the man drowned, but the circumstances and manner of his death remain under investigation.

Gerrie somehow swam to shore after the incident, and authorities later questioned her in connection with the mysterious death and disappearance.

The boat was recovered on Thursday at the nearby West Sister Island.

“Our thoughts remain with the family and everyone affected by this tragedy. We ask the public to continue giving emergency crews the space needed to conduct this difficult operation,” the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department wrote in a statement.

Gerrie is being held behind bars on $50,000 bail, according to booking records.

Authorities have not elaborated on what events unfolded on the boat, and it’s unclear what Ciha’s relationship to Gerrie and Cunningham was.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Chris Brown and Jada Wallace Delight Fans with Heartwarming New Photos of Baby Arrow

Chris Brown and Jada Wallace recently delighted fans by posting heartwarming new images of their son, Arrow, on social media.

The couple took to Instagram Stories to share a glimpse into their family life, displaying a series of photographs featuring their newborn. Notably, one picture captured Arrow beaming broadly while clad in a stylish, tan Nike zip-up. Another endearing image showed the little one sleeping contentedly in his mother’s embrace.

Arrow first entered the social media spotlight on April 26. On that day, Wallace introduced their son to the world via an Instagram photo carousel, accompanying the touching images with the succinct yet poignant caption, “Purest love.”

Chris Brown joined in the joyous occasion, expressing his happiness in the comment section with a playful nod to Arrow’s birth sign, simply stating, “Taurus gang.”

Anticipation around Arrow’s arrival had been building for some time. Brown and Wallace found themselves amidst swirling pregnancy rumors months earlier, particularly after they were spotted attending the Amiri Menswear Fall/Winter 2026–2027 event at Paris Fashion Week. Their appearance at the show sparked a frenzy among fans on social media, speculating about a possible addition to the family. However, both Brown and Wallace refrained from confirming or denying the widespread speculation until they introduced Arrow to the world.

The conversation resurfaced weeks later when one of Brown’s children’s mothers, Diamond Brown, appeared to reference Wallace’s pregnancy while calling out the singer on social media.

In an Instagram Stories post, she wrote, “Leave me and mines alone. Worry about your new baby on the way.”

Arrow is Brown’s fourth child. He is also father to daughter Royalty with Nia Guzman; son Aeko with Ammika Harris; and daughter Lovely with Diamond Brown.

Chris Brown has often spoken about how much he enjoys being a father. During a previous interview with Big Boy’s Neighborhood, the Grammy-winning singer reflected on raising his children.

“It’s fun, it’s funny to see them grow, see different things they learn… they teach you. I’m loving it, I’m having a blast,” he said.

Brown also shared that his children don’t look at him the way millions of fans do.

“I think majority of the time when I am with my kids they only see Chris,” he said. “It’s a challenge, but it’s a good journey though. I try to get into their good graces by showing them my Sesame Street episode.”

Tyler Robinson, Alleged Assassin of Charlie Kirk, Mounts Defense Amid Intensified Prosecutorial Efforts

0

PROVO, Utah – Tyler Robinson, a 23-year-old man facing accusations of murdering Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University last year, is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. The preliminary hearing, expected to last a week, will evaluate if the prosecution possesses enough substantial evidence to proceed with a trial.

Traditionally, many cases see prosecutors securing an indictment from a grand jury without opposition from the defense. However, Robinson’s case differs as he was charged via information. This requires the prosecution to demonstrate probable cause during a public preliminary hearing to decide whether the case can be escalated to trial.

During the hearing, defense lawyers will have the opportunity to question the witnesses. The standard of proof at this stage is lower than that of a full trial. Prosecutors must establish probable cause for the charges rather than proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, a challenge reserved for the trial itself before a jury.

Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two, was speaking at a TPUSA event in front of thousands of young people when a sniper’s bullet fatally struck him in the neck. His widow and parents are expected to attend the hearing.

Prosecutors have alleged that investigators found Robinson’s DNA on the trigger of the suspected murder weapon, his grandfather’s Mauser rifle; a towel they found wrapped around it; three of the four bullets inside — and a screwdriver recovered near the suspected rooftop sniper’s perch.

Digital evidence against Robinson is expected to include alleged confessions over text messages and the Discord communications app.

Police recovered the rifle in a patch of woods near the UVU campus, along the suspect’s escape route. Robinson is accused of sending text messages to his lover, Lance Twiggs, about wanting to retrieve the rifle, and law enforcement sources have said he is believed to have come face-to-face with an officer manning the perimeter nearby.

“Stuck in Orem for a little while longer yet,” Robinson allegedly wrote in the hours after the murder. “Shouldn’t be long until I can come home, but I gotta grab my rifle still.”

Twiggs, whom Robinson allegedly left a handwritten note confessing to the crime, is cooperating with investigators and has not been charged.

While the suspect’s lover won’t take the witness stand at the week-long preliminary hearing, prosecutors are expected to play a video of his interview with police.

While Robinson’s defense played up the fact the ATF was unable to conclusively match the bullet that killed Kirk to the Mauser, analysts couldn’t rule it out either. They found it was a consistent caliber and recovered a spent casing that did match.

Witnesses are also expected to place Robinson at the scene — when he lived a four-hour drive away in Washington, Utah.

In addition to allegedly shooting Kirk, he is also accused of witness tampering, committing a violent offense in the presence of a child, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury and obstruction of justice.

Prosecutors have alleged Robinson targeted Kirk because of his political views, tried to conceal the rifle and the clothes he wore during the shooting and urged Twiggs to delete incriminating messages, destroy the note and stay silent if police questioned him.

Robinson has not yet entered a plea and won’t be required to do so unless prosecutors prevail at the preliminary hearing.

The top charge against him, aggravated murder, carries the potential death penalty.

White House Criticizes Smithsonian’s Focus on ‘Woke Activism

0

In a fiery critique, the White House has taken aim at the Smithsonian Institution, accusing it of prioritizing what it terms “woke activism” over the celebration of America’s storied past.

Released on Saturday, the extensive 162-page report titled ‘Saving America’s Story: How Ideological Capture at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History Erases Our Heritage,’ marks a significant move by President Donald Trump. The report aims to influence agendas at the world’s largest museum by advocating for the celebration of the nation’s heritage.

In a bold action taken in March 2025, the President enacted an executive order designed to limit financial support for initiatives promoting “divisive narratives” and “improper ideology.” This move underscores his administration’s commitment to confronting what they perceive as the encroachment of woke ideology.

The administration underscored this commitment last August by mandating a thorough internal audit of the Smithsonian’s exhibits and materials. The review sought to ensure these materials aligned with the President’s directive to emphasize American exceptionalism.

This detailed examination was undertaken by the White House Domestic Policy Council, which documented their findings in the recently released report.

‘The Smithsonian Institution, and the National Museum of American History in particular, under its current leadership and current interpretive ideology, cannot be trusted to tell America´s story honestly and in a way that is inspiring, unifying, and worthy of our great republic,’ according to the report by the council, which is led by a former top Trump speechwriter.

‘As this report shows, confirmed in the words of Museum leadership, this ideological capture has moved the Museum´s mission away from straightforward historical education and scholarship toward an extreme political activism that seeks to transform our country,’ the authors continued.

The report hinges on several key findings, including a lack of attention paid to the nation’s founding fathers, educational materials on gender fluidity and a crusade against ‘whiteness.’

Among the exhibits the council had issues with is a statue of George Washington circa 1840 that includes a depiction of Hercules.

The statue’s accompanying text describes how the Greek hero is a symbol of ‘the perceived courage of the American people.’

That language, the council argues, ‘refuses to affirm the exceptional courage of the American people.’

The report also argues that visitors to the National Museum of American History ‘will find no major exhibit dedicated to America’s founding era, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, other founding fathers, the Constitutional Congress, the pilgrims, the Puritans or major moments of the American Revolution.’

Instead, it claims, many of the nation’s founders are represented chiefly in terms of their connection to slavery.

It specifically criticizes an exhibition that closed in November, entitled ‘The Electric Dr Franklin’ for what it says was too heavy of an emphasis on Benjamin Franklin’s connection to slavery, including his ownership of slaves, and not enough mention of his work as an abolitionist.

The report, which contains more than 30 pages of footnotes, also argues that an exhibition at the museum called ‘Many Voices, One Nation’ tries to ‘convince visitors that illegal aliens are entitled to citizenship, voting rights and “belonging” in America.’

It further says the museum endorses illegal immigration and advocates in favor of transgender issues, while it focuses on Christianity as ‘an instrument of conquest, exclusion or cultural erasure’ rather than its ‘constructive role’ in ‘shaping the nation and its freedoms.’

Should museums focus on celebrating America’s triumphs or confronting its complicated past?

The report takes particular aim at Anthea M. Hartig, the first woman to serve as director of National Museum of American History.

The report notes that Hartig ‘has explicitly stated that she sees history as a “prime tool of social justice” and one of her roles as connecting “research and scholarship to activism and advocacy.

‘Hartig believes the museum profession has “to figure out” how “we’re going to” “problematize” that “loving America is very complicated” and that objects in the museum’s collection should be used to move attention away from an “Anglo-centric” focus on the American founding,’ the report says.

‘These are not the words of an objective historian, but rather those of an activist advancing an ideological agenda contrary to the Museum’s founding purpose of fostering patriotism.’

The council instead argues that the museum ‘should document and share the achievements and failures of the Nation and the extraordinary men and women of every color and creed who shaped its course.

‘It should tell the truth, including of the Nation’s mistakes and injustices, but it should do so within a coherent account of a people striving, often imperfectly, but more often nobly, to live up to our founding principles of liberty and equality under a republic form of government.

‘It should especially teach the history of an American nation that is worthy of affection and worth passing along to future generations.’

But as it stands now, the report claims, ‘it would benefit most Americans, especially parents bringing their children for a tour, if the Smithsonian’s flagship history museum had a label at every entrance that reads: “Warning: The exhibits in this museum were prepared by people who don’t want you to love your country.”‘

But in a statement to the Daily Mail, a spokesperson for the Smithsonian Institution, denied that its exhibits are partisan.

‘For more than 180 years, the Smithsonian has served the American public with nonpartisan and independent scholarship, and we remain committed to doing so,’ the spokesperson said.

Lonnie Bunch III, the Smithsonian’s current secretary, has also pushed back against the Trump administration’s claims that it is giving into a woke ideology.

He told CNN in May that the institution has maintained its autonomy even though it has ‘given everything that’s been asked’ by the White House for review.

The secretary has largely remained out of the spotlight in the months since, but recently helped curate an exhibition marking America’s 250th anniversary – despite the White House’s claims that the Smithsonian’s leadership withheld information about America’s founding.

In the interview in May, Bunch asserted that the Trump administration played no part in his thinking or selections for the ‘American Aspirations’ exhibition at the Smithsonian castle for the nation’s birthday.

‘My goal is that history is driven by scholarship, not partisanship,’ he said at the time.

‘The Smithsonian does its own scholarship. It’s always driven by that,’ he added. ‘We have always worked with different administrations, but it’s always about what our scholarship tells us.’

In an unrelated interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, Bunch said ‘the notion of being a more perfect union, not the perfect union, is really what motivates me.’

‘I think what I want people to understand is that there is a responsibility to continue to make those aspirations available, accessible, meaningful to a whole range of people,’ Bunch said.

‘And that, in essence, America´s greatest strength, it´s not running away from its history, but it´s understanding how that history shaped us and continues to shape us.’

It now remains unclear how Saturday’s report will affect the museum institution moving forward.

But some 62 percent of the Smithsonian’s annual $1 billion budget is derived from federal sources, including funds directly appropriated by Congress.

The Trump administration proposed cutting its budget by about 12 percent in the 2026 fiscal year, but Congress has thus far maintained the institution’s federal funding.

Yet the new report notes that the president’s executive order last year directs Vice President JD Vance to work with Congress’ Office of Management and Budget to ‘prohibit expenditure on exhibits or programs that degrade shared American values, divide Americans based on race or programs or ideologies inconsistent with federal law and policy.’

The report also comes as two vacancies remain on the Smithsonian’s 17-member Board of Regents, which includes Democratic and Republican elected officials as well as nine civilians, after the terms of two trustees ended in March.

President Trump has yet to name their replacements – and the new report notes that he ‘has a duty and obligation to seek reforms of the Smithsonian’ without specifying what those may be.
