YOUNTVILLE, Calif. (KGO) — In the serene setting of Yountville, a notable incident involving Paul Pelosi, the husband of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, has stirred local attention. Over the weekend, Napa County Sheriff’s Deputies announced that Pelosi is facing charges related to an alleged hit-and-run incident.

The 86-year-old is accused of colliding with a parked car before briefly pausing and subsequently leaving the scene.

Authorities said the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon on the 6700 block of Yount Street, prompting a swift response from sheriff’s deputies.

According to reports, a witness reached out to 911 to report that a brown convertible, allegedly directed by Pelosi, had struck an unoccupied parked vehicle. The hit resulted in substantial damage to the back of the parked car, pushing its front right tire onto the curb.

Guided by the information provided by the witness, authorities managed to locate Pelosi soon after. The California Highway Patrol intercepted his car on Yountville Cross Road, as confirmed by Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

Pelosi’s car had significant damage to the front right side.

Pelosi admitted to Napa County sheriffs to hitting something, but did not know what he had hit, so “he kept driving.”

Napa County authorities said he is no longer driving.

During the investigation, authorities said alcohol does not appear to be a factor since he registered a .00 on the Preliminary Alcohol Screening Device.

Paul Pelosi was not arrested.

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said it will be referring the case to the Napa District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution.

Help Your Child Cope with Socceroos’ World Cup Exit: Expert Tips and Advice

0

The magic of the World Cup has truly captivated the hearts and minds of Australian children.

In the past weeks, enthusiastic young fans eagerly followed the Socceroos, joining their families and peers to discuss matches, donning green and gold attire, and dreaming of an Australian triumph.

However, with the Socceroos’ journey coming to an end, a wave of disappointment has swept over many children. The conclusion of this chapter extends beyond just the scoreboard; it marks the end of shared family activities, lively discussions with friends, and the exhilarating hope that Australia might achieve something extraordinary.

For some kids, the sight of their favorite players facing disappointment has added to the emotional weight.

These feelings are perfectly normal. They reflect how deeply the youngsters cared about the World Cup and the hope it inspired within them.

No parent likes seeing their child upset. But moments like these can also be opportunities to help children strengthen their emotional regulation skills.

Acknowledge their feelings

Research in developmental psychology shows children learn to understand and manage difficult emotions through supportive interactions with trusted adults.

This ability is known as emotional regulation.

When children are upset, our first instinct is often to make them feel better. Comments such as, “It’s only soccer,” or, “Don’t worry about it,” are usually well-intentioned, but can dismiss how a child is feeling.

One evidence-based approach is called emotion coaching. Rather than trying to make the emotion disappear, the goal is to help children recognise, understand and gradually learn to manage it.

Start by acknowledging how they feel. You might say, “I know you were really hoping Australia would win. I’m disappointed too.” or, “It’s OK to feel upset. You were really excited about the tournament.”

Once children feel heard, help them make sense of what they’re feeling. You might ask, “What do you think has made you the most upset?”

It might be that Australia lost, or it could be that there are no more matches to look forward to.

Put the disappointment into perspective

Once children have had a chance to talk about how they feel, it can help to reflect on the whole tournament.

You might ask about their favourite moment, which goal they’ll remember most, or which player they enjoyed watching the most.

These conversations remind children that, while the result was disappointing, it doesn’t erase all the excitement and enjoyment that came before it.

Parents can also help children look beyond the result. You might say, “It wasn’t the ending we were hoping for, but wasn’t it exciting watching the Socceroos get this far?” or, “We’ll always remember that amazing goal,” or, “I loved watching the games with you.”

The goal isn’t to make the disappointment disappear. It’s to help children recognise the disappointment is only one part of a much bigger experience.

Understanding the broader picture can support healthy emotional regulation.

Remember children are watching you

How parents and adults respond to disappointment can shape how children learn to respond when things don’t go the way they want.

It’s perfectly OK to let your child know you’re disappointed. It can be reassuring for them to see adults have difficult emotions too. The important thing is to show the disappointment can be handled in a healthy way.

For example, instead of becoming angry, blaming the referee, or criticising players, you might say, “This is so sad, but I’m really proud of how the Socceroos played.”

When children see adults acknowledge difficult emotions while responding calmly and constructively, they learn disappointment is a normal part of life, and that it can be managed.

Helping children grow through disappointment

Disappointment is an unavoidable part of growing up.

Children will receive lower marks than they hoped for, not make a team they wanted to play in or miss something fun due to illness.

The role of parents isn’t to prevent these experiences. It’s to help children learn difficult emotions are a normal part of life, and that they can be understood, managed and eventually pass.

So with the support of caring adults, even a disappointing World Cup result can become an opportunity for children to build emotional skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

Uncover the Emmy-Winning Star Trek Actress Who Teamed Up with Sylvester Stallone

0

This week in Los Angeles, an actress who garnered two Emmy Awards for her performance in a TV movie alongside Katharine Hepburn was spotted in public.

Her role as the innocent yet optimistic disabled character, Laura Wingfield, in the adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ renowned play, The Glass Menagerie, received widespread praise.

The talented actress also graced the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the popular series led by Patrick Stewart in the iconic role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Throughout her extensive career, she shared the screen with a variety of prominent figures, including Sylvester Stallone, Tom Selleck, Gary Oldman, and even Macaulay Culkin.

At 86 years old, she appeared lively and energetic while enjoying some sunshine and a breath of fresh air under the warm Southern California skies.

Can you guess who she is?

She is none other than actress Joanna Miles, whom Star Trek: The Next Generation fans will recognize as Spock’s stepmother Perrin.

The Daily Mail has contacted Miles’ representative for comment and has yet to hear back.

She was born in March 1940 in Nice, France to two painters, American Jeanne Patterson Miles and Dutch national Johannes Schiefer.

When she was two months old, the Nazis invaded France, and during the war her mother’s US citizenship served as an escape hatch for the family to flee to America.

‘We were a headline in the New York Times as the last Americans out of France,’ she told Broadway World. ‘My father was from Europe and happy to get out.’

Miles inherited her parents’ inclination toward the arts, but observed in retrospect that ‘although they both became successful, I found my mother’s struggles particularly frightening. So I decided acting was a better idea.’

She studied the profession during a golden age of education in the field, enrolling at the Actors Studio in New York City at a time in the 1960s when her classmates included Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

In the fledgling stages of her career, she acted with Hoffman in The Glass Menagerie in stock and appeared on TV shows like NYPD and All My Children.

Her breakthrough came in 1973 when she was asked to read for the part of the psychologically delicate Laura in a TV movie of The Glass Menagerie.

Sam Waterston, later of Law & Order fame, was cast as Laura’s older brother Tom, with Hepburn fronting the cast as their domineering mother Amanda, whose ironclad grip on her children makes them both chafe in different ways.

When Miles arrived for her audition, she found herself in a bind, as she had prepared a scene with Amanda but was asked to play another sequence.

‘So Katharine Hepburn agreed to read with me, and she cast me on the spot. It was truly a wonderful experience,’ said Miles of the TV film, which was shot in London.

‘Katharine Hepburn was an exciting person, who made the set a very demanding place. She even rode around London on her bicycle.’

In 1990 she featured as Hamlet’s mother Gertrude in the film adaptation of Tom Stoppard’s play Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, with Tim Roth and Gary Oldman playing the title roles in a cast including Richard Dreyfuss.

Her television work in the 1990s included a two-episode arc on Star Trek: The Next Generation as Perrin, the second wife of Mark Lenard’s character Sarek, who is the father of Leonard Nimoy’s Spock from the original series.

‘Star Trek was such an unlikely job for me,’ Miles reflected years later. ‘I’m still invited to Star Trek conventions and frequently asked to sign autographs.’

She recalled that the series’ ‘sets were something wonderful. I brought my young son one day and the crew activated the doors and set pieces to give him a treat.’

In 2001 she held a small role as a shopkeeper’s wife in the TV western movie Crossfire Trail, starring Tom Selleck and Wilford Brimley along with Virginia Madsen, the sister of the late Reservoir Dogs star Michael Madsen.

Miles’ most recent theatrically released movie was the 2007 comedy Sex and Breakfast, led by Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin, who was by then in his 20s.

The movie centers on two couples who try to reignite the spark in their relationships by dabbling in swinging on the advice of a therapist played by Miles.

Although her most recent screen role was the 2013 TV movie Hunt for the Labyrinth Killer, she kept acting onstage after that job, such as in the 2015 play Front Door Open, in which she starred as an agoraphobe.

On the personal front, Miles has been married since 1978 to the producer and writer Michael Brandman, with whom she has one son.

Man City Seals £12.5m Deal for Leicester Prodigy Jeremy Monga as Nathan Ake Transfers to Turkey – Transfer Window Update

With the arrival of summer, the transfer window has officially opened and will remain so until September 1, ushering in a bustling time as clubs aim for significant acquisitions for the coming season. Let’s delve into the latest updates from Simon Jones and the Daily Mail Sport team…

Everton agree £18m deal for Tyrique George

Everton has successfully negotiated with Chelsea to bring Tyrique George on board.

The agreement includes an initial outlay of £18 million, supplemented by £6 million in possible add-ons, alongside a 15 percent sell-on clause.

Man City reach Monga agreement

Manchester City and Leicester City have settled terms for the acquisition of Jeremy Monga, with the deal valued up to £12.5 million, contingent on future sell-on profits.

This arrangement consists of an immediate payment of £10 million, alongside an additional £2.5 million based on performance-related incentives.

City have tracked the 16-year-old for a number of years. He is due to sign a professional contract when he turns 17, next week on July 10.

Arsenal had been considered favourites and had made offers but ultimately, they were not prepared to meet Leicester’s valuation.

Manchester United and Brentford had also shown interest but anticipated that Monga was heading for Arsenal.

Fenerbahce have completed the signing of defender Nathan Ake from Manchester City in an £8.5million deal.

As Daily Mail Sport reported, the Turkish club will pay an initial £7m for the Netherlands international, with £1.5m in add-ons.

Relegated West Ham target Everton’s McNeil

Everton winger Dwight McNeil is one of West Ham’s targets this summer.

The 26-year-old was upset to see a move to Crystal Palace collapse in January but worked his way back into the fold under David Moyes.

However, with Everton looking at adding more wide players this window, with talks ongoing over a reduced fee with Chelsea for Tyrique George, McNeil is open to a new challenge and to play more regularly.

Arsenal agree to sell Trossard to Turkish giants

Besiktas have agreed a £17.1m (€20million) deal with Arsenal to sign Leandro Trossard.

The deal will see Arsenal get £15.4m up front and £1.7m in add-ons for the 31-year-old.

Trossard, who is at the World Cup with Belgium, only has one year left on his Arsenal contract.

He joined Arsenal from Brighton in 2023.

Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli also have a year left on their contracts though the club do have a one-year option on Martinelli.

Ipswich battle rival for Brazilian forward

Ipswich have made a rival bid for Toulouse forward Emersonn after Hull revised their offer earlier this week.

Hull had made what would be a club record offer, over £13.8million, for the 21-year-old Brazilian striker, but they face competition from fellow newly-promoted Premier League side Ipswich.

Hammers appoint new recruitment chief as part of summer shake-up

West Ham have confirmed the appointment of Nils Koppen as the club’s new director of player recruitment.

The Belgian joins the Championship side from FC Copenhagen, where he was technical director, having also held similar roles at Rangers and PSV Eindhoven.

A West Ham statement read: ‘Koppen was identified as the outstanding candidate for the new role, following a thorough and detailed recruitment process that included the board and head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

‘Koppen will begin work at West Ham United as part of a new football leadership structure for the men’s team, tasked with identifying and recruiting the players needed to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

‘Key to the role will be leading the Club’s scouting and recruitment operation and supporting the Board with football administration and negotiations with players, other clubs and intermediaries.’

West Ham are looking at strengthening all departments in their squad and are working through a number of targets including Troyes midfielder Martin Adeline, as reported by Daily Mail Sport last month.

Everton wide man Dwight McNeil is another player on their radar this summer.

Championship trio chase Mubama

Manchester City striker Divin Mubama is attracting interest from Middlesbrough, Derby and Preston.

The 21-year-old, who joined City from West Ham for £2million in 2024, had a successful spell on loan at Stoke last season, scoring five goals until his campaign was curtailed by injury in January.

Mubama suffered ankle ligament damage after a hefty challenge from QPR’s Jimmy Dunne and initially feared he had broken his leg.

However, he has recovered well, is fit again and a number of Championship sides are keen to take him, hoping he can have a similar impact on their season.

Mubama has already spoken to Derby but he and City have yet to make a decision.

The deal for the former Celtic defender is worth around £5million a season.

Record Turnout Defies Texas Heat at San Antonio’s Stars & Stripes Independence Day Parade

0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — In a vibrant display of patriotism, thousands of people from San Antonio gathered along the city’s downtown streets near the historic Alamo. They came to witness the Stars & Stripes Independence Day Parade, even as the mercury threatened to climb towards triple digits on Saturday. The parade proudly showcased traditional Fourth of July floats, captivating military bands, and lively Tex-Mex performances, contributing to the festive atmosphere.

The event, dubbed the Stars & Stripes on Houston Street Independence Day Parade, was part of a grand celebration marking America’s 250th birthday. Revived in 2024 after more than a century’s hiatus, the parade has become a central feature of San Antonio’s Fourth of July festivities.

Rear Admiral A.B. Cruz III, USN (Retired), took center stage as the parade’s distinguished Grand Marshal. A proud native of San Antonio, Cruz embarked on his naval career after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1980 and retired in 2013. His role as Grand Marshal added significance to the celebration of America’s 250th birthday, especially in San Antonio, which is also known as “Military City USA” due to its numerous military bases and the substantial community of active-duty and retired military personnel.

Fort Sam Houston’s 323rd Army band led the parade through downtown, playing patriotic marches as other floats and performance groups trailed behind. Known as “Fort Sam’s Own, ” it traces its lineage to military bands at the historic fort that date back to 1893.

On one corner along the route, a trio of female singers entertained the crowds awaiting the arrival of the parade floats by singing patriotic songs, including some 1940s wartime victory songs in the style of the Andrews Sisters.

Adding a touch of Southwest flair, a crew of Mexican folkloric dancers dressed in traditional garb with touches of red, white, and blue performed traditional dances during the parade, representing local Tex-Mex culture in San Antonio.

The attending crowds appeared to be coping well with the high temperatures on Saturday. San Antonio is currently experiencing very hot weather typical of most mid-summers. The heat index routinely hovers between 99 and 106 degrees Fahrenheit on most days. Residents are acclimated to the conditions, but tourists visiting the city may find it quite challenging to adjust to the heat.

Fortunately, the Stars & Stripes parade concluded without any significant medical emergencies. High temperatures in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia forced the cancellation of parades. Many smaller parades and events across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic were also canceled due to heat-related concerns.

Saturday’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday will continue throughout the day in San Antonio with numerous family-friendly events and will culminate with a music and fireworks show at the city’s Woodlawn Lake Park later in the evening.
