Guests Arrive as Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Wedding Festivities Begin

0

When Taylor Swift first shared news of her engagement, she jokingly pledged to invite every single person she’d ever met to her wedding. Judging by the scene on Wednesday at JFK Airport, it seems she meant it.

Friends and celebrities are flying in from all corners of the world to witness the pop sensation tie the knot with fiancé Travis Kelce. The ceremony is set to take place at the iconic Madison Square Garden.

Among the early arrivals was British television presenter Graham Norton, who touched down in New York with his husband, Jono McLeod.

Exclusive images captured by the Daily Mail on Wednesday show a slightly jet-lagged Norton dressed in a blue shirt. He was spotted at the airport alongside his husband, with luggage in hand.

Also seen making their way through the terminal were “Fleabag” creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge accompanied by family and a young child, while pop star Dua Lipa was already spotted enjoying her time in New York City.

Norton’s presence will come as little surprise to anyone who caught his BBC chat show last October.

It was during that very appearance that Swift turned to Norton and invited him to her wedding after showing off her engagement ring and admitting that narrowing down the guest list was the most stressful part of planning, because she intended to invite ‘anyone I’ve ever talked to.’

Swift then made good on a second promise made that same evening, when her fellow chat show guest Domhnall Gleeson joked on air that he wanted to be in one of her music videos, Swift took him at his word.

She had him star in ‘Opalite,’ her retro-90s video shot in secret at the Whitgift shopping center in Croydon, south London, in late November – featuring Gleeson, Cillian Murphy, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Lewis Capaldi, and Norton himself.

Norton later revealed on his podcast that he had kept the whole shoot tightly under wraps for months.

It appears both the invitation and the cameo came with a plus-one to the wedding of the century.

Swift and Kelce have enforced a strict ‘no ring, no bring’ policy for the celebration – meaning only married or engaged guests are permitted to bring a date.

The rule has already sparked debate, with wedding planners branding it ‘outdated’ and fans pointing out that several of Swift’s closest friends – including Gigi Hadid, who is in a long-term relationship with Bradley Cooper but not yet married – may find their partners left off the list.

Waller-Bridge has her own history with Swift, with the Fleabag creator moving in overlapping circles with Swift for years, and was among the crowd at the Eras Tour London shows in 2024.

She was memorably caught on camera sprinting back to the VIP tent alongside her co-star Andrew Scott when the opening chords of ‘Style’ rang out.

The British arrivals join a growing roll call of A-listers converging on New York.

Ed Sheeran – one of Swift’s oldest friends and a confirmed guest – was spotted dining with Taylor’s longtime collaborator Aaron Dessner at Buona Sera on the Lake in Malta, upstate New York on June 30, just hours from the city.

Swift has previously joked it would be ‘hard to stop’ Sheeran from grabbing the mic at the reception.

With Stevie Nicks and Tim McGraw also said to be performing, he may not be the only one.

Dua Lipa was also pictured entering Electric Lady Studios in New York Wednesday alongside Camila Cabello, raising inevitable questions about whether the pair are laying down something special for the reception.

Sabrina Carpenter was also seen enjoying a meal out with friends at Emmett’s on Grove in the West Village, adding to a guest list that is beginning to look less like a wedding and more like a who’s who of the entire music industry.

The ‘Espresso’ singer, who opened for Swift on parts of her Eras Tour, was seen in the background of a video shared on X, wearing her trademark blond locks long and what appeared to be a leather jacket.

Swift has even invited the five starters who propelled the New York Knicks to NBA championship glory just weeks ago to her and Kelce’s wedding, according to Page Six.

Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart are all set to be there for the ceremony and party in the heart of Manhattan.

Brunson, the biggest Knicks star, has made no secret in the past of being a Swiftie. And as Daily Mail reported at the time, the Knicks stars were happier with Swift attending their game than Donald Trump, when he turned up for Game 3.

An insider informed the Daily Mail in early June that Swift and Kelce had embraced the idea of a ‘spectacle’ wedding and selected Madison Square Garden as the venue.

Sources also previously claimed to the Daily Mail that guests who received an invitation are being required to sign an NDA before receiving information about the wedding.

Family and close friends of the couple are also allegedly being asked to sign a nondisclosure agreement.

Those who RSVP are then sent a link to the NDA, which requires guests not to disclose information about the wedding.

Last year in August, Kelce popped the big question and Swift shared photos from the intimate engagement on Instagram with the caption: ‘Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.’

The sports player had turned his backyard in Kansas City into a secret garden wonderland, which offered a romantic atmosphere.

Non-Fan’s Unique Perspective: ATEEZ K-Pop Concert Experience

Admittedly, I’m no aficionado of K-pop. With the exception of a few BLACKPINK hits, my knowledge of the genre’s music is quite limited. I also lack a favorite ‘idol’ and struggle to justify spending £75 on a light stick synchronized to songs. Nonetheless, I’m not entirely clueless about this vibrant world—thanks to a dear friend who is a dedicated K-pop enthusiast, I found myself at a Stray Kids concert in London last year.

This year, in a bid to reciprocate, I invited her to ATEEZ’s performance at the BST festival in Hyde Park. This band, another of her favorites, comprises eight members: San, Wooyoung, Seonghwa, Hongjoong, Yunho, Yeosang, Mingi, and Jongho. Initially, I anticipated a challenge in distinguishing each member amidst the genre’s famously intricate choreography.

However, my concern was unfounded. Each performer exudes such distinct charisma that even from the edge of the Diamond VIP pit, their individuality shone brightly. Accompanied by a live band and an entourage of dancers, Mingi captured attention with his deep vocals and rap verses, while Yunho’s mesmerizing dance moves left a profound impression.

Debuting in 2018, ATEEZ has rapidly ascended the music scene, topping Billboard charts and amassing billions of streams. The allure of their music is evident in high-energy tracks like “WORK” and “Guerrilla,” which even had those who might otherwise be disengaged, moving along to the beat.

Admittedly, there was a momentary dip in energy during the performance with songs such as “ARRIBA” and “Ice on My Teeth,” which didn’t quite resonate with me. However, perhaps this is simply a reflection of my incomplete education in the diverse tapestry of K-pop.

Personally, I was drawn to the ballad Now This House Ain’t a Home, performed with a backdrop of rain streaming down the huge screens that surrounded the stage like tears.

ATEEZ also took to the stage with their latest single BAD, released at the end of June. After a much-begged for encore, they performed The Real, leaving most people in the crowd screaming before finally departing the stage for good.

Am I now a die-hard K-pop stan? Probably not. But I couldn’t help but be drawn into the music, the vocals and in particular the choreography. I found myself wanting to know more about each band member, and leaning over to shout questions in my friend’s ear, and at one point as the set drew to a close I asked myself, ‘Is this why so many people love this music?’ as I danced along in a swell of screaming fans.

K-pop is not just a genre of music, it’s a community – one I was happy to be part of just for a night.

Asian Markets Slip as Chip Stocks Face Sell-Off

HONG KONG – Asian markets took a dip on Thursday, largely impacted by a significant sell-off in computer chip stocks. Meanwhile, U.S. futures barely shifted after Wall Street closed with slight losses the previous day.

In a related development, oil prices dropped as U.S. and Iranian officials met separately with mediators from Qatar and Pakistan, aiming for steps toward a permanent resolution to the ongoing conflict in Iran.

In South Korea, the Kospi index plunged by 5.1%, settling at 7,877.45, pushed down by significant losses in chip-related stocks. SK Hynix, a major player in memory chips, saw its share price drop by 7.7%, while Samsung Electronics also faced a decline, losing 6.4% of its value.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 slipped by 1.5%, ending at 69,443.16. Shares of Tokyo Electron, which specializes in chip-making equipment, experienced a decrease of 5.6%.

Over in Taiwan, the Taiex index fell by 1.1%. Notably, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (TSMC), the leading global chipmaker, saw its shares decline by 1.8%, contributing to the island’s broader market downturn.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was up 0.8% to 23,060.63. Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD’s shares rose 8.7% after it reported its sales rose for a second straight month. The Shanghai Composite index fell 0.9% to 4,075.58.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged 0.1% lower to 8,710.30.

India’s Sensex climbed 0.5%.

Surging demand for artificial intelligence has pushed many AI and tech stocks higher in recent months, with markets in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan reaping big gains. The Kospi and Nikkei 225 have gained about 85% and 34%, respectively, so far this year.

However, concerns over a potential glut in supply given the massive investments made by Big Tech companies in the U.S. and elsewhere have been clouding investor sentiment.

On Wednesday, chip stocks in the U.S. mostly fell. Micron Technology gave up 10.6%, Intel sank 9%, AMD, or Advanced Micro Devices, dropped 6.9%, Broadcom lost 2.2% and Nvidia slipped 1.3%.

The S&P 500, Wall Street’s benchmark, fell 0.2% to 7,483.23. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped less than 0.1% to 52,305.24, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite dropped 0.7% to 26,040.03.

“AI demand may continue to grow but at a slower pace than expected,” economists Megan Fisher and Vicky Redwood at Capital Economics wrote in a note on Thursday. “Firms and investors may be underestimating the barriers to AI adoption.”

While transformative technologies can be adopted widely, they may still fall short of generating financial returns soon enough in order to justify the massive scale of investments made by many firms, the economists said.

Oil prices fell early Thursday, trading at levels below where they were before the Iran war began in late February. Hopes have risen that crude supplies will improve markedly with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that’s key for the world’s oil transport, even though the number of ships crossing the strait is still limited.

Brent crude, the international standard, fell 1% to $70.89 per barrel, lower than the roughly $72 a barrel before the start of the war. Benchmark U.S. crude also fell 1%, to $67.91 per barrel.

In other dealings, the U.S. dollar was trading at 162.39 Japanese yen, down from 162.58 yen, after the yen fell to a four-decade low against the dollar on Wednesday. The euro was trading at $1.1387, up from $1.1377.

Revelation of Second Wife’s Murder Sheds Light on Unsolved Double Homicide

Friends Carol Marlin and Margaret “Maggie” Ginn shared what would become their last meal together in Ginn’s home in Cobb County, Georgia, before both women were brutally murdered. This shocking crime left a community in despair and baffled investigators for years.

It wasn’t until a decade later, with the tragic death of Kasi Peek, that the mystery began to unravel. Her passing revealed the unsuspected presence of what a family member termed as a “monster” hiding in plain sight.

In a heart-wrenching interview with Oxygen’s Dateline: Secrets Uncovered, Maggie’s granddaughter, Layla Bryant, expressed the family’s disbelief, stating, “It was so unbelievable that there is that kind of evil out there.” The revelation rocked the family and community to their core.

How Did John Peek and Kasi Peek Meet?

Unaware of the dark past surrounding Carol and Maggie, Kasi first encountered the seemingly charming software engineer John Peek at a gathering at her condo. He quickly captured Kasi’s heart through a series of romantic gestures and endearing love notes.

What began as a whirlwind romance soon led to a life together when the couple married within months of meeting. They embarked on their new journey in a large dream house outside Atlanta, never suspecting the sinister connection that lingered in their midst.

But after John accepted a job with Habitat for Humanity and relocated part-time to Americus, Georgia, the relationship began to falter—especially after Kasi began to suspect that John was having an affair.

Furious, she moved out and returned to her condo in April 2005. Yet, Kasi couldn’t resist John’s charm and the pair agreed to try to work it out.

What Happened to Kasi Peek?

Everything was going well until John called 911 in October 2005 to report that he’d just discovered Kasi inside her condo.

“I just found my wife dead,” a crying John told a dispatcher. “Please send somebody. Please.”

Officers arrived within minutes and discovered the condo had been ransacked, with items strewn across the floor. Kasi was lying in a pool of blood in her bed, her glasses still sitting askew on her face and the tv playing. The 44-year-old had been shot to death.

“[Her] eyes were open,” Smyrna Police Detective Ron Waddell recalled of the“fear” still etched on her face. “It actually looked like she was still looking at somebody that was in the room.”

John told investigators he and Kasi were still living apart but “probably getting back together” at the time of the murder, adding that he had last spoken to his wife around 4 p.m. the day before as she was heading out to meet a friend.

John said he’d gone to check on his wife after someone called and told him they’d found Kasi’s purse and cell phone abandoned in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex.

“I called her name. Uh I heard the television on,” he told detectives of walking into the condo. “I felt a chill go through my body at the time.”

After discovering her dead in the bed, he told police he called 911.

Detectives Learn of John Peek’s Affair, Previous Murdered Wife

John told detectives that Kasi had been more eager to reconcile than he was because he was still carrying on an affair with a woman named Liza Kent.

According to detectives, John was playing both women, telling Kasi there was no one else in his life and assuring Liza he was getting a divorce.

But the real bombshell came at the end of the interview, when John revealed that nearly a decade earlier his common law wife Carol had been brutally murdered alongside her friend in a violent crime that had never been solved. He told detectives he’d “forgot” to mention it earlier, something Waddell described as “the biggest omission i’ve ever had in any investigation I’ve ever done.”

Though John had confided in Kasi about his past, his wife believed it was just a tragic chapter of his life.

What Happened to Carol Marlin and Maggie Ginn?

Smyrna detectives, however, weren’t so sure and reached out to Cobb County Police Detective Eddie Herman to learn more about the June 13, 1996 double homicide.

According to Herman, John called on June 14 to report that Carol—a 46-year-old engineer at Lockheed Martin—had never come home after having dinner with her friend Maggie. John was concerned that she may have been in an accident, but there were no reports of any accidents involving her dark blue Camry and her car was not at the restaurant.

Though John initially claimed he didn’t know Maggie’s address, her family later told investigators he’d done repair work for her at the house in the past and knew where the 64-year-old lived.

Detectives were able to get the address from Lockheed Martin, where Maggie had worked before her retirement, and discovered Carol’s car still sitting in the driveway.

Inside, they found a gruesome scene. Carol was lying on the floor by the dining room table, while Maggie’s body was found in a bedroom. Both women had been beaten to death.

“It was awful,” Cobb County Detective Richard Peluso remembered of the “savage” attack. “It was definitely a lot of trauma.”

Police Suspect Carol Marlin Was Targeted

After noticing that valuables were still in the home, detectives concluded it had more likely been a targeted attack than a robbery gone wrong.

“Looking at the injuries, particularly after the medical examiner got on the scene and we got a better look at Carol Marlin. She was the focus,” Herman said. “Whoever did this, it was overkill with Carol Marlin.”

John told detectives he couldn’t imagine who would have wanted to hurt Carol.

One clue was found in Maggie’s hand. The former secretary was clutching an invoice from Lockheed Martin signed by Barry Webb.

Barry had once been close friends with Carol and John and told detectives that it wasn’t his handwriting on the paper. He also told police the same night Carol went missing that an intruder tried to break into his house.

When he confronted the man—he believed to be John—he ran off into the night. John called him later and apologized, claiming he had been looking for Carol.

Carol’s sister Susie Suttom also told investigators that she believed John was cheating on Carol, noting that he loved getting attention from women.

Though detectives suspected John had been involved in the murders—and may have been trying to plant evidence at Barry’s house the night of the crime—they had nothing to definitively tie him to the case.

It went cold for years, as John cashed in on Carol’s $700,000 life insurance policy and began a new life with Kasi.

Who Killed Kasi Peek, Maggie Ginn and Carol Marlin?

Now, investigators were trying to piece together Kasi’s murder. They got some help from Kasi’s sister Jaquidon Kruger who agreed—along with her husband—to record a conversation with John about Kasi’s death.

“Two dead wives, two dead wives John,” Jaquidon said at one point in the conversation. “You know I never thought there was anything suspicious about Carol, but there’s something damn suspicious about Kasi’s murder.”

Still, John continued to insist he had nothing to do with either crime.

“I mean Jaquidon, I love this woman. I still love this woman,” he said. “I didn’t kill her.”

As prosecutors took a fresh look at both cases, they decided the circumstantial evidence was strongest against John in Maggie and Carol’s murder and arrested him two weeks after Kasi’s death.

Meanwhile, hoping to keep John from collecting a life insurance payout from Kasi’s death, Jaquidon filed a civil lawsuit against him, earning access to his financial documents in the process.

Kasi had been considering canceling her life insurance policy at the insistence of her sister, but they discovered that John had been making extra payments to keep the policy going ahead of her death. Authorities also learned that John stood to benefit from personal property, joint bank accounts and retirement accounts the couple had shared.

Prosecutors believed John killed Kasi because he wanted access to the money before a divorce could go through.

“He has no empathy. He has no caring,” Susie said. “He’s going to trick you into thinking he loves you and he doesn’t. It’s all about how can you benefit him?”

Given the new evidence, John was also charged with Kasi’s murder.

He agreed to plead guilty to the murders in 2007 in exchange for prosecutors removing the possibility of the death penalty.

USMNT Leaves World Cup Struggles Behind, Sets Sights on Glory

0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The U.S. men’s national team relentlessly continues to achieve new milestones, each one more audacious than the last.

On a tense Wednesday night, they faced a formidable challenge in their 2-0 triumph over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the World Cup Round of 32. This victory marks one of the most significant barriers the team has overcome in years, perhaps even the most challenging yet.

In the lead-up to the match, the U.S. players maintained a facade of calmness. “Would it be weird if I told you I don’t really feel too much pressure right now?” Tim Ream, the seasoned defender, expressed in a laid-back tone. However, beneath this cool persona, the nerves were palpable as they stepped onto the field.

Traditionally perceived as the underdog in knockout scenarios—recall their encounters with the Netherlands in 2022, Belgium in 2014, and Brazil in 1994—the U.S. team was the clear favorite against Bosnia-Herzegovina. This match presented an opportunity to secure their first knockout round victory since 2022, and they seized it confidently.

Sheriff Reports Roommate Murdered and Concealed in Plastic Barrel

Inset: Daniel W. Russell (Gasconade County Sheriff’s Office). Background: The boat ramp in Gasconade, Mo. (Google Maps).

In a chilling discovery, a Missouri resident is currently in custody, accused of murdering a man who resided in his garage. Authorities claim that the suspect then concealed the victim’s body inside a barrel and disposed of it in a river.

Identified as 53-year-old Daniel W. Russell, the accused now faces charges of first-degree murder, corpse abandonment, and tampering with evidence in the criminal case concerning the death of Michael A. Graham, whose age has not yet been disclosed.

The victim was first reported missing by local law enforcement in February 2019. It was not until April of the same year that investigators made the grim find — human remains sealed within a plastic barrel located along the Gasconade River, a small community situated about 90 miles west of St. Louis.

Russell had been under suspicion by law enforcement for some time, per a probable cause statement reviewed by NBC affiliate KSDK based in St. Louis. Authorities had interacted with him shortly before the barrel, containing the victim’s remains, was discovered near a boat ramp.

At the time, the defendant allegedly said Graham had been staying at his house, but he had not seen him for several days.

Russell also allegedly told police that Graham owed him money, so the missing man had left behind a debit card to pay off his debt, law enforcement says. Investigators, however, took note of something they considered relevant: the defendant “consistently referred to Graham in the past tense,” according to the charging document.

Detectives later executed a search warrant at Russell’s residence and determined concrete had recently been poured in the garage, because a telltale semicircle of concrete remained, according to the probable cause statement. Investigators also found some of the vanished man’s belongings inside the house, including his motorcycles.

That piece of concrete matched with a chunk of concrete recovered from inside the barrel containing Graham’s remains, police said.

After the remains were identified by the Boone County Medical Examiner, detectives spoke with Russell again. When asked outright if he was involved in Graham’s death, the defendant allegedly said he knew nothing. Investigators, however, wrote that those denials were “largely inconsistent with the circumstances surrounding the investigation,” according to the probable cause statement.

Despite Graham’s missing status first being reported in February 2019, the case may well go back substantially further.

A witness told investigators Russell enlisted their help to move a foul-smelling barrel in September 2018, the charging document alleges, according to Columbia-based ABC and MyNetworkTV affiliate KMIZ.

An informant cited in the probable cause statement told investigators Russell admitted to the killing because Graham had planned to move out after suspecting the defendant and his family were taking advantage of him, the Gasconade County Republican reported.

The informant also claimed to have spoken with Russell’s wife, who allegedly said she saw the victim “lying in a chair” in the garage “deceased, and it appeared that he had been struck in the head with something,” according to the charging document.

The case was reviewed in 2021 and formally reopened in 2025, according to the Gasconade County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives ultimately charged Russell after new evidence drawn from Facebook messages allegedly connected the defendant to one of the victim’s motorcycles, according to the sheriff’s office.

The defendant was arrested over the weekend by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and is currently being detained without bond in the Franklin County Adult Detention Center.

Virginia Police Officer Suspended Following Malicious Wounding Charge in Off-Duty Altercation

This week, a Virginia police officer found himself in legal trouble, accused of assaulting an acquaintance while off duty, according to officials.

The Arlington County Police Department reported the arrest of 31-year-old Vincent Baglio on charges of malicious wounding.

Authorities have stated that the alleged incident of assault took place on May 24 inside a residence, with Baglio not on duty at the time. They confirmed that Baglio and the victim were acquainted.

“During a conversation, the suspect allegedly physically assaulted the victim and made statements threatening harm to them,” police said in a statement.

The incident was reported to police June 30, and Baglio was arrested after detectives investigated the allegations.

Baglio has since been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal and internal administrative investigations, police said.

Arlington County Police Chief Andy Penn said the allegations against Baglio do not represent the values of the department.

“I want to assure our community that the serious criminal allegations in this case represent conduct that is wholly unacceptable and fundamentally inconsistent with the values, standards and responsibilities of our agency,” Penn said. “Such actions are in direct contradiction to the oath we take and the professional expectations we place on every law enforcement officer.

Penn said the department will conduct both a criminal investigation and an internal administrative review and vowed to hold officers accountable based on the findings.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to holding ourselves accountable and taking appropriate action based on the findings of those investigations,” Penn added.

Baglio joined the Arlington County Police Department in June 2024, according to the department.

USA Claims Impressive World Cup Victory Against Bosnia and Herzegovina

0

In a dramatic wave of football emotions, Folarin Balogun found himself at the center of attention from both teammates and rivals. Christian Pulisic embraced him warmly, and Bosnia’s Sead Kolasinac gave him a consoling pat on the head. As Balogun made his way toward the exit at Levi’s Stadium, several substitutes approached to share their thoughts. Yet, how could they truly capture the essence of the 64-minute whirlwind Balogun had just experienced?

Facing Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balogun netted a crucial goal—the third in his World Cup journey—which placed the USMNT on a promising path to the last 16. His joy was short-lived, however, as an improbable red card threatened to sidetrack America’s summer aspirations.

Fortunately for the USA, they managed to avoid a setback. With ten men, under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, the team showed resilience. Malik Tillman’s exceptional free kick, scored eight minutes before the final whistle, secured a 2-0 victory. The win not only brought a renewed sense of determination but also ended a long-standing streak of underperformance against European teams while marking only the second knockout round victory in their World Cup history. This achievement rightly stands as the headline.

Yet now, Pochettino faces the challenge of proceeding without his pivotal No 9 for at least one game, potentially more, depending on how Balogun’s suspension unfolds. The repercussions of this situation could be substantial. It’s baffling that under FIFA’s rules, red cards can only be contested on grounds of mistaken identity or if a player risks a multi-game ban.

Balogun joined a rare club, becoming the first player since Zinedine Zidane’s famous 2006 World Cup final to score and be dismissed in the same knockout match. His goal, amidst a chaotic first-half performance, included a disallowed goal, a stunning woodwork strike, and a rejected penalty appeal.

Then, midway through the second half, Balogun collided with Bosnia and Herzegovina center back Tarik Muharemovic. The defender went down in agony but no one inside Levi’s Stadium thought much of it until a message appeared on the big screen: VAR was checking for a possible red card. Cue a visit to the monitor for Brazilian referee Raphael Claus.

Replays showed Balogun’s studs running down the back of Muharemovic’s leg and then landing on the defender’s ankle. It was a painful one. It certainly didn’t look pretty when slowed down, frame-by-frame. Make no mistake, though, the decision to give a red card was a ludicrous one.

This was a simple tussle, a tangle of legs as Balogun – eyes fixed on the ball – looked to secure possession for his side. There was no force, no intent. What are we doing? After all, only a couple of weeks ago, Lionel Messi escaped without a card after his studs-up challenge on the calf and Achilles of Algeria captain Aissa Mandi.

Thankfully, Tillman – who has quietly been one of the stars of this team – made sure Claus’ decision didn’t impact this result. The midfielder deserved his goal and all the plaudits. He was superb. Next up? Belgium and a shot at a first quarterfinal since 2002.

It didn’t take long for Bosnia and Herzegovina to drag the US into uncharted waters at this World Cup. In all three group stage games, Pochettino’s team took the lead inside 12 minutes. Here, they had to wait half an hour to find the net. And until the cusp of halftime to break the deadlock.

What a whirlwind first 45 minutes this was for Balogun. Here’s a brief run-through all the chaos: first, Balogun went down under a challenge from Amar Dedic. There appeared to be contact but the referee said no. It would have been soft.

A few minutes later, Balogun found the net after Malik Tillman stole possession high up the pitch. This time, however, the offside flag denied the striker.

His goal eventually arrived in the 45th minute. It came with a hefty dose of good fortune that Balogun had earned with all his endeavor: from Tyler Adams’ neat backheel, Tillman slid a through-ball towards Balogun. It eventually reached the striker after diverting off two defenders. Balogun made no mistake, sliding the ball beyond Nikola Vasilj. He is now just one of three USA players to score at least three goals at a single World Cup and he celebrated with his own version of LeBron James’ signature ‘Silencer’.

Somehow the striker should have had a second before the break. In the eighth minute of stoppage time, Adams clipped a pass to Sergino Dest at the back post. His header found Balogun, who could only loop a shot on to the bar. And breathe.

At the end of it all? The United States were in front and 45 minutes from the last 16. Bosnia and Herzegovina could have no quibbles with the scoreline – despite creating a few chances of their own.

Should FIFA change its rules so unfair red cards can be appealed after games?

The clearest couple came within moments of each other. First, from a long ball to Edin Dzeko, Ermedin Demirovic unleashed a shot that was parried by Matt Freese. Kerim Alajbegovic then curled the resulting corner under Freese’s crossbar, forcing the goalkeeper to claw it away. Either side of those scares, however, the US looked the more threatening side.

Pulisic, back in the starting lineup for the first time since America’s opening game, was bright off the left flank and McKennie’s runs in behind caused issues time and again.

On one occasion, his cross was pushed clear by Vasilj, who then paid a heavy price: the goalkeeper’s face collided with the knee of Antonee Robinson. Vasilj was still icing his left cheek during the first hydration break.

Boos greeted that pause and before long, more frustration rained down from the stands as the US banged and banged at the door. Eventually the home fans had the goal they craved.

Unfortunately, the early evidence of these knockout rounds suggested the drama was only about to begin. Before this, there had been nine games in the round of 32. Seven were decided no earlier than the 86th minute.

Bosnia and Herzegovina coach Sergej Barbarez, a former professional poker player, rolled the dice early in the second half, making three substitutions. Among those he threw on? Esmir Bajraktarevic, who was born in Wisconsin and represented the USMNT in 2024 before committing to Bosnia.

He is the son of refugees and the winger scored the goal that brought Bosnia and Herzegovina to this World Cup. In the end, though, neither Bajraktarevic, nor the referee, nor Ermin Mahmic – who came close with two stoppage-time shots – could halt the US’ march to the round of 16.

Pulisic thought he had secured victory when he scored with 12 minutes to go. Tillman was at the heart of it once more. But again the offside denied the USMNT. If only for a few more minutes.

A24’s Spine-Chilling Horror Movie Resurfaces to Terrify HBO Max Audiences

The film “Obsession” has established itself as a major hit, while “Backrooms” stunned audiences with its box office success. Even the latest installment of “Scary Movie,” known for its satire of the horror genre, drew people back to theaters for its playful jabs at classic horror clichés. Amid this onslaught of horror sensations, it’s easy to overlook understated films like “Undertone,” a recent addition from A24 that slipped by many. Fortunately, viewers can now experience it from the comfort of home—ideally with a quality sound system to enhance the experience.

Released on March 13, “Undertone” is now streaming on HBO Max, where it has rapidly climbed the platform’s popularity charts, reigning as the most-watched movie since June 29. This success can be attributed to its minimalist approach, which has captivated audiences, masterfully delivering thrills with simplicity.

The story revolves around Evy, portrayed by Nina Kiri, who is recording a podcast episode while simultaneously caring for her sick mother. True to its horror roots, the podcast delves into series of tapes that allegedly capture supernatural events. As Evy becomes more engrossed in these recordings, she starts to suspect that the eerie occurrences described might be manifesting in her own reality.

While films like “Insidious” rely on startling visuals and jump scares to frighten viewers, “Undertone” leans heavily on auditory elements to evoke fear. Subtle sounds—whispers and hisses—create a creeping sensation that the protagonist might not be as alone as she assumes in her home.

Undertone weaponizes your own mind against you

A significant portion of “Undertone” centers around Evy at her desk, speaking into a microphone. While this might seem dull at first glance, the tension escalates when she dons noise-canceling headphones, effectively isolating her from the usual ambient noise. As viewers peer into the shadowy hallways, they become hyper-aware, wondering if something ominous lurks unseen. Meanwhile, Evy remains blissfully ignorant until the terror makes itself undeniable.

“Undertone” made $21 million at the box office and garnered a 75% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences only gave it a 50% on the platform, meaning it’s very much a “love it or hate it” type of horror film. It’s a low-key premise, without giant monsters or impressive visual effects filling up every frame, but it night be just what you’re looking for if you’re in the mood for a different type of horror experience.

“Undertone” may not work for everyone, but for those willing to give it a shot, it can get under your skin in more ways than one. On Instagram, @itsyourfilmsis noted that she broke out in hives after watching the movie. On Reddit, one user reportedly felt like taking a nerve pill afterward to calm themselves down. A movie that can elicit a real health episode? That’s just about the best endorsement a horror flick can receive.

“Backrooms” may be the A24 horror movie everyone’s talking about right now, but as we wait for “Backrooms 2” to get here, why not give “Undertone” a chance?

  • Tanner said plans are already underway to honor the submarine after it is retired.

“You know, the boat’s going to eventually retire, and we are in progress as USS Greenville Inc. to put together a plan to bring the sail and the rudder here to Greene County, Greeneville,” he said. “And, we’ll have a museum in place to remember the boat, but just want to spread the word to the young people that you guys have a submarine named after you, here, you know, it’s your boat.”

The USS Greeneville is a fast-attack submarine capable of supporting a variety of missions.
