Chico Library Shooter Displays Hate Symbol in Court After Fatal Incident

0

The teenager facing charges for a deadly shooting at a Butte County Library has further sparked outrage by displaying a “white power” gesture during a court appearance.

On Thursday, 18-year-old Bradley Scott Sayer appeared in a Chico, California courtroom.

During the hearing, Sayer was restrained with shackles and donned a yellow jail outfit paired with grey sweatpants.

Upon entering the courtroom, Sayer made a hand sign commonly linked to “white power” ideologies.

Sayer faces arraignment on two murder charges, which are compounded by special circumstances. Prosecutors are advocating for a life sentence without parole, though this may evolve as additional charges could be filed.

Sayer wrote “Natural Selection” in black marker on his white T-shirt in a bid to mimic the Columbine High School shooters during Tuesday’s attack, officials said.

Cops said the shirt represented his obsession with the massacre.

Columbine shooter Eric Harris wore a similar shirt as he committed an atrocity at his Colorado high school in 1999.

Butte County District Attorney Michael Ramsey said Sayer was a “fan” of the killing and ones like it.

“The suspect was a fan, and a fan for some time, of social media involving Columbine-type shootings, the school shootings, and had unfortunately a deep dive into that social media community, and obviously lost his way in that and decided yesterday to act in copycat,” Ramsey said.

Officials said Sayer first arrived at the library and did a walkthrough before he walked out to his car to retrieve a shotgun.

“He was looking for a confined, populated location to attack,” FBI agent Sid Patel said at a Tuesday news conference.

He allegedly shot first victim Jacob Hull, 46, in the leg as he was entering the library. Seeing Hull disabled from the shot, he fired at his head, killing him, officials said.

A juvenile female who was with Hull was injured. Sayer then entered the library and allegedly shot 74-year-old Robert Johnson in the head, also killing him.

Library staff heroically rushed the patrons of the building to safety, officials said, and Sayer allegedly fled the scene. Arriving law enforcement seized Sayer outside the building without any use of force, officials said.

The entire incident only lasted around four minutes from the first 911 calls to Sayer’s arrest, Chico Chief of police Billy Aldridge said. Eight rounds were fired, and the shotgun used was recovered at the scene.

Two other firearms were found in Sayer’s vehicle.

Unveiling a Billion Dollar Healthcare Scam: Four Indicted in Russian Crime Syndicate Connection

0

In a significant development, prosecutors have revealed the indictment of four individuals in New Hampshire for their alleged participation in an extensive $3 billion healthcare fraud and money laundering scheme. This operation, stretching over a prolonged period, involved manipulations that shocked many in the legal and medical communities.

At the center of the allegations is 76-year-old Fructoso de Jesus Gomez Agudelo from Nashua, who faces charges of wire fraud. Authorities accuse him of misappropriating another individual’s identity, pointing to this act as a critical element of the fraudulent activities.

Adding to the gravity of the situation are charges against Kakha Bendeliani, 48, and Goga Danelia, 31, both hailing from the country of Georgia. The duo is accused of conspiring to commit money laundering by submitting deceptive claims to Medicare, contributing to the fraudulent machine churning out false financial gains.

Bendeliani and Danelia’s actions were reportedly in service of a Russian transnational criminal outfit. This organization’s activities, characterized by identity theft, are allegedly behind what officials declare as the largest healthcare fraud case revolving around identity theft in legal history.

The ripple effects of this scheme subsequently led to a large-scale investigation. Thousands, among them senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, reached out to Medicare with concerns. They were perplexed by the arrival of Explanation of Benefits (EOB) forms that detailed orders for durable medical equipment—items they neither requested nor received—prompting suspicions and scrutiny.

The criminal network orchestrated the multi-billion-dollar healthcare fraud and money laundering scheme that sought to steal from Medicare, other government-sponsored health insurance programs and private health insurance companies, prosecutors said.

“These charges expose the staggering scale of fraud and money laundering that Transnational Criminal Organizations are willing to inflict on our health care system and the people of New Hampshire,” Erin Creegan, U.S. attorney for the District of New Hampshire, said of the charges against Danelia and Bendeliani.

Separately, Rima Gerges-Maalouf, 60, of Massachusetts, was charged with diverting controlled prescription drugs while working as a pharmacist in New Hampshire. Investigators accused her of opening up drug capsules to steal the powdered medication inside.

The indictments allege a wide variety of fraud.

Agudelo allegedly stole and assumed the identity of a U.S. citizen for over 20 years, using the stolen persona to apply for and steal over $500,000 in public assistance — including Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, housing and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Meanwhile, Bendeliani allegedly acted as the “nominee owner” of a fraudulent medical equipment front company called Centennial Med Supply LLC. He allegedly allowed others to use his personal information to buy the business and set up bank accounts across six U.S. banks.

He then allegedly withdrew $12,589,770 in fraudulent Medicare payouts derived from a massive $3 billion urinary catheter billing scam. He used cashier’s checks to hide the money’s origin before wiring more than $12.5 million to overseas accounts.

Danelia was Bendeliani’s primary accomplice, the Justice Department said.

Since Bendeliani did not speak fluent English or drive, Danelia allegedly provided driving and English translation services to help him navigate U.S. banks.

Danelia also helped Bendeliani open accounts, withdraw the fraudulent cash via cashier’s checks and move it into secondary accounts. The funds were ultimately wired out of the U.S., authorities said.

While working as a temporary, per diem pharmacist at a pharmacy in New Hampshire in August 2024, Gerges-Maalouf also allegedly stole prescription pills and capsule medication powders meant for sick patients.

She kept the medication and ingested some of the stolen drugs while actively on duty, according to the DOJ. In total, she is accused of stealing 147 pills or capsules of controlled substances in a single month.

All four suspects face decades in prison if convicted.

Boxing Legend Sugar Ray Leonard Appeals to LA Court for Troubled Son’s Safety

0

On Thursday, Sugar Ray Leonard made a heartfelt appeal in a Los Angeles courtroom regarding his son’s recent legal troubles.

Daniel, the 25-year-old son of the boxing icon, was taken into custody last month after attempting to illegally enter Leonard’s residence, violating a temporary restraining order in the process.

He currently faces several charges, including three misdemeanors: disobeying a domestic relations court order, trespassing, and the battery of an elder or dependent adult.

Leonard, at 70, stood before the judge and pleaded for his son to be granted access to a diversion program run by the county, hoping to avoid the strain of an extended trial.

Though Daniel was absent from the court proceedings, Leonard passionately delivered a statement on his behalf, striving to support his troubled son.

‘I am here because of my concern for my son, Daniel, who is really an alcoholic and addict,’ he said. ‘I was also an alcoholic. I just want to stand by him.

‘This is really tough for me but this is the best way to keep him alive. My son has been through a lot. I’m in support of what it takes.’

When asked by an attorney with the LA City Attorney’s office if he supports his son to undergo the diversion program, the legendary fighter said: ‘That’s why I’m here. I’m in total support. I’m trying to be a better father and husband.’

In California, diversion programs allow eligible individuals to avoid jail time and criminal convictions by completing rehabilitation or treatment. Upon successful completion, charges are dismissed and the arrest record is typically sealed.

These options include mental health, drug/DUI, military, and specific county-level programs.

The formidable Sugar Ray, dressed in a slick suit and button down salmon-colored shirt and tie, was very emotional as he addressed the judge.

The judge then responded by assuring the former boxer that ‘we will make sure your son gets what he needs.’

Daniel is the youngest son of Sugar Ray Leonard and his second wife Bernadette Robi, and his fourth son overall.

He was reportedly detained on his father’s property on May 20 in the back of a police car after violating a temporary restraining order.

The report alleges that Daniel tried to enter the residence by turning exterior door handles, but it is not clear whether he gained entrance to the home.

It is believed that Sugar Ray still lives on a luxurious $46.5 million estate in the exclusive Upper Riviera area of the Pacific Palisades. It has been listed for sale multiple times over the past few years but has not sold.

Court filings show that Leonard filed a separate request for a domestic violence restraining order on the same date, after Daniel violated the original order.

He petitioned for Daniel to be ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from himself, his wife Bernadette and their daughter Camille, as well as the boxer’s three dogs.

In his filing, Leonard claimed that Daniel has been a drug addict for ‘seven or eight years at least’ with his behavior having allegedly ‘gotten worse.’

He alleged that Daniel has wrecked five different cars, was involved in a hit and run, and stolen valuables and large amounts of money.

Leonard claimed that his son has overdosed four times and had to be ‘brought back to life’ at hospital on two occasions.

He said that his son had become violent and had shoved the boxer during a heated physical altercation.

‘I love my son but he has become a danger not only to himself but to his family,’ Leonard wrote. ‘My wife is extremely afraid along with my daughter Camille.

‘His behavior has gotten worse everyday. We haven’t had a day of peace in nine years.’

Sugar Ray had his first son – Ray Jr – with his first wife Juanita Wilkinson in 1973, before adding a daughter – Camille – with Bernadette.

He and Bernadette went on to have another two sons, Jarrel and then Daniel, but their family life has remained private despite the boxing legend’s fame and fortune.

Sugar Ray and Daniel have been pictured together on multiple occasions in recent years – as recently as the summer of 2025 in a snap alongside Magic Johnson.

In February of last year, Daniel’s mother Bernadette posted a cryptic caption on Instagram alongside a photograph of Sugar Ray and Daniel – her husband and son.

A photo showed the pair standing together on a beach with Sugar Ray’s arm around Daniel’s shoulder, and the caption read: ‘Happy Valentine’s to my hearts!!! Love you both beyond and we will get through this faze!’

In 2023, the boxing icon posted a family selfie on Daniel’s birthday, alongside the caption: ‘So happy to be with my son Daniel this weekend! I am so proud of you!!! Happy Birthday!!!’

More recently, Sugar Ray celebrated his wife Bernadette’s birthday at a party in April, and Daniel is conspicuous by his absence from the family photos.

Sugar Ray had a legendary boxing career throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s, fighting 40 times with a total of 36 overall wins.

He is an Olympic gold medalist and won world titles in five different weight classes, making him one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Leonard was part of the legendary ‘Four Kings’ throughout the 1980s, which consisted of him alongside Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler. They all fought each other but Leonard was the only man to beat all three of his rivals.

In 2016, he was voted as the greatest living boxer by The Ring, and he continues to be a familiar face on television having previously competed on Dancing With The Stars and other reality TV shows.

He is also the godfather of Khloe Kardashian and has appeared on multiple episodes of the hit TV show Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

Unlocking Health: The Critical Importance of Early HIV Detection

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. () — While National HIV Testing Day officially lands on June 27, some health facilities are taking proactive steps by providing complimentary testing two days ahead of the scheduled observance.

Experts emphasize that understanding your HIV status is crucial as it initiates the journey towards safeguarding your health and tapping into additional preventive measures.

In a conversation with Tony Price, the HIV prevention manager at the health department, it was highlighted that a negative test result opens avenues to discuss preventive medication options with your healthcare provider. Conversely, a positive result ensures immediate access to care that supports living a long and healthy life.

Officials are encouraging community members to seize the opportunity for a free test. However, for those who miss out, it’s reassuring to know that complimentary HIV testing is accessible throughout the year. For detailed information on these initiatives, reach out to the HIV/STD Hotline at 1-800-322-2438.

Did Community Strong Australia Stumble Out of the Gate? Unveiling the First Impressions

0

As Allegra Spender and Zali Steggall unveiled their new political venture, the public’s attention was not on the policies but predominantly on the party’s name.

Named Community Strong Australia (CSA), Spender and Steggall envision their teal-inspired party as a centrist platform to welcome community-endorsed candidates, distinct from One Nation. Nevertheless, social media users have not held back in voicing their disapproval of the chosen name.

“The name left me fairly unimpressed, and I suspect others feel the same. However, given the difficult nature of their task, I empathize,” commented Jill Sheppard, a politics professor at ANU, to SBS News.

Sheppard explained that in naming the party, they had to be sensitive to the existing teal independents who hadn’t formally joined their ranks. They also needed to steer clear of any resemblance to the ‘voices for’ political movement.

Consequently, both “teal” and “voice” were eliminated as potential names for the new party.

The party’s creation had been rumoured for weeks when it launched on Thursday.

Speaking to the ABC, Spender said CSA was unlike any party that had come before it because it prioritised community representation above all else.

“That’s what people are really asking for, they want politicians to put their communities first, but at the same time people want [politicians] to work collaboratively,” she said.

Sheppard said this was a complex vision to shoehorn into a name, given that they needed to take their parliamentary colleagues into account.

“You’re trying to build a brand from nothing, and you’re trying to not step on the toes of people that you’ve been working with over the last two terms of Parliament,” she said.

The new party also had to stand apart from Labor and the Liberals.

“It didn’t leave them much wriggle room.”

“That leaves them with not too many places to go, but they really obviously want to emphasise this community aspect.”

The party has no leader and will give its members a ‘free vote’, meaning they can vote issue by issue in line with what their constituents want them to.

A political party would likely be able to manage campaigning resources differently and support multiple candidates, as opposed to independents.

In a statement to SBS News, CSA said the “strength of the country is based on the strength of our communities.”

“Community Strong has come out of the community and will build on achievements of community independents to give Australians an alternative to the two-party system that has let them down.”

Sheppard said the new party was trying to differentiate itself while also squeezing into a very small spot “on the political map.”

“There’s obviously an electorate out there for a centrist party that cares about the environment, but it’s not a huge part of the electorate, and I think their name reflects how difficult that is.”

What’s in a name?

An expert in political marketing at ANU, Dr Andrew Hughes said the importance of political branding had shifted over the last ten years, making something like a party’s name “more important than ever.”

“The right name can really tell a story, and that’s what it’s all about in the digital age: storytelling,” he said.

How did CSA stack up?

“I wasn’t too impressed to be honest, the name really doesn’t resonate.”

He said ‘Community Strong Australia’ left a lot open to interpretation, and that might be what was causing concern for voters.

“Community Strong doesn’t really have that sense of what you might stand for — it could mean a lot of things.”

A man in a grey suit jacket smiles at camera

He said time would tell if the name proved to be an issue for the party, which could rebrand down the track if required.

“In general, Australia has always favoured really clear, dynamic names — think of the Sex Party, The Animal Justice Party,” he said.

“‘One Nation’, ‘Labor’, ‘Liberals’, ‘Greens’ — they’re all one idea, basically one word, and they clearly reflect what they represent,” he said.

“You want your name to be what you stand for and what people can connect with, no matter who they might be in society and the community.”

Until recently, strong policies, strong messaging, and what Hughes called “pure politics” explained elections, but thanks to the growing influence of social media, he said marketing prowess was increasingly driving political movements.

“It’s becoming more noticeable now that a lot of the bigger campaigns will run marketing teams now all the way through — not just during election times — but all the way through the term of government or even opposition,” he said.

“And if you don’t, you’re behind the game.”

Both Sydney-based, Spender has held the seat of Wentworth since 2022 and Steggall won Warringah from former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull in 2019.

Father Charged with Fatally Beating Daughter Over Alleged Smirk, Say Police

In a shocking case out of Texas, a man has been detained on charges of fatally beating his 9-year-old daughter earlier this year.

Marquise Anderson, 35, faces the grave accusation of capital murder involving a victim under the age of 10. This charge comes months after the tragic death of his daughter, Joanna Shoulder, who was just 9 years old when she succumbed to severe blunt force trauma. More details emerged as the case unfolded.

Details from an affidavit, obtained by NBC affiliate KXAS, reveal that Fort Worth Police were dispatched to Anderson’s residence in Fort Worth, Texas, at 3:15 a.m. on February 8. Upon arrival, first responders discovered Joanna lying unconscious on the floor. As she was rushed to the hospital, medics noticed she was covered in bruises. Tragically, Joanna passed away from her injuries at the hospital, prompting homicide detectives to focus their investigation on Anderson.

Investigators reported that a woman present in the home during the incident alleged that Anderson had disciplined Joanna with a belt the day prior to her death. In the early hours of February 8, Anderson reportedly woke the woman, asserting that Joanna had fallen ill while in the bathtub. He recounted leaving the room briefly to get her some water, during which he claimed he heard distressing noises. Upon returning, he found Joanna had vomited and injured her head after a fall.

The woman was performing CPR on Joanna when paramedics arrived.

When police spoke to Anderson, he said Joanna had wet the bed twice that night. After the second incident, he put her in the bathtub for three hours to clean her up. Police said Anderson admitted that he spanked Joanna. After she purportedly smirked at him, he then allegedly admitted to beating her with a belt that had a metal buckle.

Anderson told police that after he allegedly beat Joanna with the belt, he checked on her while she sat in the tub. Her condition apparently deteriorated, and Anderson said Joanna became “sleepy, thirsty, hot, and slurr[ed] her speech.” She then collapsed and started to vomit, and Anderson called 911. Police said Anderson provided multiple explanations for the injuries to her head.

According to police, the autopsy on Joanna revealed that the 9-year-old suffered “abundant hemorrhage of the soft tissues” and “multiple bruises on Joanna’s back, thighs, lower extremities, and flank.” She had multiple blunt force injuries to her head and neck and bleeding underneath her scalp and around her cervical and thoracic spinal canal.

On June 16, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that Joanna’s manner of death was homicide. Authorities arrested Anderson on Tuesday. He remains in custody at the Tarrant County Jail, where he is being held without bond. His next court date was not immediately available.

Serial Burglar Caught Red-Handed in Golfview Vehicle Break-In

0

Staff Report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Authorities have apprehended 43-year-old Jerome Jamal Jones in connection with the alleged burglary of a vehicle parked in the carport of a residence located in the Golfview area.

Around 4:30 a.m. on June 22, a homeowner caught sight of an individual rifling through a vehicle in her carport. Upon confronting him, the suspect reportedly shouted at her before making a hasty retreat. She was able to provide law enforcement with a detailed description of the suspect’s appearance and attire.

While officers were on site speaking with her, another officer halted Jones for cycling without lights on Village Drive. Jones mentioned that he typically commuted from his Northridge home, located near NW 83rd Street, to his workplace on Main Street. However, when questioned about being on a campus road, he was said to have struggled to provide a coherent explanation. His clothing reportedly matched the description given by the victim, and he was allegedly found with a face mask and gloves.

Subsequently, the victim confirmed that both the appearance and voice of Jones matched that of the intruder she had encountered in her carport.

Jones has been charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling and burglary of an unoccupied vehicle. He has seven felony convictions (seven violent) and two misdemeanor convictions (one violent) and has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2011; he is a designated Career Offender. Judge Meshon Rawls ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Severe Chicago Weather: New Storms Trigger Fresh Power Outages on South Side and NW Indiana

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — Residents across the Chicago area are grappling with the aftermath of Wednesday’s severe weather, which left significant storm damage in its wake.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

In the West Beverly neighborhood, numerous trees and power lines have been knocked down along Fairfield Avenue, spanning the stretch between 100th and 101st streets.

Additional footage reveals trees toppled onto both houses and vehicles, illustrating the storm’s impact.

A tangle of fallen trees and broken branches is scattered across the streets, making cleanup efforts a formidable task.

Residents are advised to exercise caution while navigating the affected areas due to blocked roads.

“It got real strong and real scary, and it looked like you were in the middle of a tornado. And then we ran in the basement and not even a minute later this tree cracked,” said Jim Smerz of Evergreen Park.

He describes the storm as bringing tornado-like winds. A tree damaged his garage, roof and gutters.

In northwest suburban Elgin, Chopper 7 spotted crews working, after heavy rainfall saturated the ground there, weakening root systems and making trees more susceptible to falling.

Merrillville, Indiana sees flooding days after EF-2 tornado ravages city

In northwest Indiana, many communities also woke up Thursday with downed trees and power lines.

The South Shore Line announced it suspended services through the Thursday morning rush hour after a freight train derailed and power loss.

Partial service will be restored to the Monon Corridor afternoon rush hour only, effective with eastbound Monon Corridor Train No. 303, departing Millennium Station at 3:30 p.m. Following 303, departures will include eastbound trains 305, 307, 309, 311 and westbound train 312.

Lakeshore Corridor service remains suspended throughout Thursday evening. In place of Monon shuttle train service, SSL will operate four Extra Monon Corridor trains. Delays are expected.

Metra is currently honoring South Shore Line tickets for passengers who want to use Metra Electric District train service.

Trains will run on a weekend/holiday schedule Friday. There will be busing between the Miller and Hegewisch stations.

According to Griffith police, there are trees and limbs down in multiple areas, with many streets currently blocked.

They ask people living in the area to avoid unnecessary travel, while crews work to clear roads and respond to calls for service.

Eighty-year-old Griffith resident John Galambos said the past several weeks have been relentless.

“The last couple weeks and such, it’s been crazy. Tornadoes north, south, east and west and now something like this; I’m too old for this,” Galambos said.

Galambos, a retired disabled veteran, said his property was damaged when two massive trees nearly crushed his garage and the home where he and his wife have lived for more than 50 years.

“Then all of a sudden, it started getting really bad in my living room; so we went in our basement and then all heck broke loose. It was crazy, the noise and the sound,” he said.

Griffith resident Don Wiltfong said the conditions deteriorated quickly.

“By the time we got in the house, it was heavy rain. And then, in the blink of an eye, it was horizontal hail and winds that I guess to be 70, 80 miles an hour. That’s when the tree went down,” he said.

The falling tree crushed the second floor of a neighboring home. No one was injured. Neighbors again stepped in to help one another deal with the destruction.

“You go down Broad Street just before Ridge, you’ll see the lines are down. The poles are all snapped off,” said Mike, a neighborhood resident.

Griffith, located in Lake County, was already under a disaster declaration when the latest storms hit.

“The bigger issue besides the trees, that people are waking up this morning with water in their basement because we don’t have any electricity,” said Rick Ryfa, president of the Griffith Town Council.

The outages are also affecting local businesses. Ulysses and Alberto Gomez, who opened their restaurant, Sangria, a month ago, said the lack of power could prevent them from participating in the town’s Country Fest this weekend.

“Right now we’re worried about it because we don’t have power and we are worried to lose all the merchandise,” said Alberto Gomez, a co-owner of the restaurant.

No serious injuries were reported. Officials said it could take up to two days for power to be restored. Residents in need of emergency services are advised to call 911. Storm damage can be reported by calling 211 or visiting in211.org.

Merrillville is also dealing with more flooding and power outages just days after the area was hit by an EF-2 tornado.

ABC7’s Jaisol Martinez said the weather will be clear and calm for any cleanup needed on Thursday.
