Unveiling Australia’s Abortion Debate: The Hidden Perspectives and Personal Choices

0

In Brief

  • Anti-abortion rights advocates are accused of using sex-selective abortions to “inflame racial tensions” and target migrants.
  • Abortion legislation in NSW already mandates against sex-selective abortions for non-medical reasons.

The abortion debate in Australia has reignited, with some arguing that the discussion extends beyond access to encompass issues of personal autonomy.

Muktesh Chibber has devoted her career to aiding migrant women.

As a psychotherapist and mediator specializing in couple and family relationships, she offers culturally sensitive counseling. Chibber highlights that pregnant migrant women often endure significant pressure from their partners and extended families.

The lack of comprehensive Australian data makes it unclear whether migrant women have higher or lower abortion rates compared to other groups.

A recent bill proposed in New South Wales aims to impose stricter penalties, including fines and imprisonment, on doctors who perform abortions based on the baby’s sex.

But Chibber said while there can be pressure in some families regarding the sex of the expected child, women are more commonly pressured about their capacity to financially contribute if pregnant. She said through her work she’s been made aware of women tormented by their extended family members, pressured to terminate the pregnancy.

“They say, ‘How can you be pregnant? You have to work, you have to contribute, you have to contribute to the mortgage, to the family … we want you to work,’” she explained.

“It’s quite common, I have come across women who have been through so much trauma in regard to being forced to abort their child, or their first pregnancy.”

Chibber said often, expectant mothers are “left with no choice”.

“They face daily harassment, trauma and exclusion … Life becomes a constant hell.”

For many, the decision to terminate leads to separation or family breakdown, said Chibber.

While not as common, Chibber said migrant women may be denied access to an abortion.

“I come across women who want to abort their pregnancy, sometimes they aren’t ready for it, there are financial issues, or because there is extreme family violence,” she said.

In those instances, a child may increase the opportunity for types of violence.

“They have to look after the child, they are not allowed to work, they are victims of significant financial abuse or threats of visa abuse,” she said.

Family and community systems are one of the many barriers to reproductive health that migrant women face.

“Australia’s abortion care system was not designed with migrant and refugee women in mind,” Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health CEO Dr Adele Murdolo said.

“Medicare exclusions, English-only services, and a lack of culturally safe providers aren’t unfortunate side effects. They are structural features that predictably and consistently fail the same women, over and over.”

She noted the excessive barriers that accompany temporary visa status and non-English speaking women.

“Migrant women are often encountering basic information about abortion laws and how to access care for the first time in the middle of a stressful situation,” Murdolo said.

She believes the answer is access to “skilled, unbiased health professionals”.

“They need laws which allow health care workers to provide care based on evidence-based information which can support patients to make informed decisions.”

For those who do access abortion care, Chibber says postvention support is crucial.

“We can link women into services, but we have to make sure they have the capacity to access those services.”

Abortion has been decriminalised in every Australian state and territory.

As of 2019, a person has the choice to terminate a pregnancy up to 22 weeks – after, approval from two health care professionals is required.

Amongst changes introduced that year was the banning of sex-selective abortions.

However, NSW Libertarian MLC John Ruddick says the measures aren’t enough.

“If a mother still wants to abort because of their child’s sex, they can obviously say it’s for any other reason and no one will know,” he said.

Ruddick introduced a private member’s bill that would see any health practitioner providing sex selective abortions slapped with fines of up to $22,000 or five years in prison.

The campaign has garnered support from federal One Nation senator Barnaby Joyce.

“This law in NSW must be passed or otherwise we all accept that sex selection is appropriate. Girls are not as good as boys,” he reportedly told an anti-abortion rally on Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said there was “no evidence that sex selection is occurring” in the state.

The Greens’ health spokesperson, Dr Amanda Cohn, also said the bill was “fuelled by racist and anti-immigration rhetoric”.

Family Planning Australia medical education officer Dr Lucy Cho told SBS News that the bill is “another attempt by those who oppose all abortions to inflame tensions, create barriers to pregnancy options and recriminalise abortion”.

Cho said the focus on sex selective abortions served “no purpose” but to “inflame racial tensions”.

“Abortion legislation in NSW already mandates against sex-selective abortions for non-medical reasons,” they said.

“Recent NSW data shows that abortions are very rarely performed for this reason.”

A 2019 study from La Trobe University found one in six Australian women had had an abortion by their mid-30s.

The research noted that both single and married women sought abortion care, with women who already had children more likely to terminate a pregnancy than childless women.

It also found that women who have less autonomy over their reproductive health, whether due to family violence, drug use, or ineffective contraception, were more likely to receive an abortion.

Shocking NFL Arrest: Star Player and Girlfriend Speak Out After Controversial Detainment

0

Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper has issued a public apology following a weekend incident that led to both him and his girlfriend being arrested on domestic violence charges. The altercation reportedly arose from a dispute over alleged infidelity.

According to records from Douglas County jail, Cooper, 28, was detained on suspicion of two counts of domestic violence, in addition to a charge of criminal mischief. The arrest took place late Thursday night, with Parker Police taking him into custody at 11:16 p.m., and he was subsequently booked into jail in the early hours of Friday morning at 2:38 a.m.

Jade Fiegen, Cooper’s girlfriend, who is also 28, faced similar charges of domestic violence and criminal mischief. Both were involved in the altercation that brought the situation to the attention of law enforcement.

Cooper made his initial court appearance on Friday in the 23rd Judicial District Court. He is scheduled to return on Monday for a disposition hearing, which will further address the charges against him.

In a statement to The Denver Post, Cooper’s lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, confirmed that Cooper was granted a personal recognizance bond. This bond allowed Cooper to be released from custody without the need for an immediate bail payment, pending his upcoming court appearance.

But now he’s taken to social media to apologize for his actions and he also shared a passage of the Bible with his 60,000 followers.

Cooper wrote: ‘I realize posting a Bible quote right after something very serious happens does not just mean everything is okay. I apologize to my family, to my friends and my community… and so many others.

‘Sincerely, I apologize. This situation is not who I am.’

According to the arrest affidavit seen by The Daily Mail, Cooper and Fiegen, who have been dating for ‘approximately four years’, were arguing inside his apartment over allegations he was cheating on her.

Fiegen said she took his phone from Cooper, threw it across the room and then went to retrieve it so she could look through it.

Cooper told police he grabbed Fiegen by her upper arms and eventually managed to get his phone back from her. When she tried again to grab his phone, Cooper told officers he braced his neck against hers to stop her from reaching it.

After the physical struggle had ended, Cooper told officers he went over to the couch and picked up Fiegen’s phone. He told her if she didn’t leave the apartment, he was going to break her phone.

Cooper then said Fiegen didn’t leave and admitted he bit her phone, which caused ‘disabling damage’. Police officers reported that her phone had a ‘cracked screen’.

Fiegen described the incident differently. The affidavit for her arrest shows she told a separate officer that Cooper ‘grabbed her by the neck’ and held her up against the wall for approximately a minute.

Fiegen also said he picked her up and threw her on the ground approximately three times, and punched the wall ‘next to her face.’

But the officer wrote in the affidavit that the injuries she observed on the Fiegen’s body did not match her retelling of the assault.

‘I observed a small mark on (the woman’s) neck, where she claimed Jonathan grabbed her,’ the affidavit reads.

‘I also observed scratches on (her) arm and a small cut on her hand. These markings and scratches did not appear consistent with a larger male lifting (her) up into the air by her throat as well as repeatedly being thrown to the ground.

‘The small mark on (the woman’s) neck did not appear to be consistent with the claim that (she) had been held up in the air by her throat by another individual.’

Cooper, who was selected by the Broncos in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, had been practicing earlier on Thursday before the incident took place.

‘We are aware of the matter and are gathering more information,’ the Broncos said in a statement.

Cooper has mae himself an indispensable piece of the Broncos’ defense and has played every single game in the last three seasons, recording 27 sacks.

Last season, Cooper helped the Broncos reach the playoffs and beat the Buffalo Bills before they lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game.

In November 2024, the Broncos signed Cooper to a four-year contract extension worth up to $60 million that included $33m in guarantees.

USDA Reports Discovery of Second Screwworm Case in Texas

The Hill reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has identified a second instance of a flesh-eating parasite, known as the screwworm, in Texas. The department is working swiftly to control the outbreak to prevent it from causing significant damage to the cattle industry.

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the presence of the New World screwworm in a month-old calf in Zavala County. This discovery came after testing several suspected cases and was made within six miles of another reported case in a young calf earlier in the week.

“The USDA has acted promptly regarding this second case, showcasing our readiness,” stated Dudley Hoskins, the under secretary for marketing and regulatory programs. “This detection falls within the designated movement control zone and area for enhanced sterile insect release.”

This marks the second confirmed occurrence of the screwworm in Texas since 1966. Authorities have assured that other samples from the region have tested negative for the parasite.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the New World screwworm is a parasitic fly that preys on the living flesh of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Its larvae develop into maggots that burrow into tissue, leading to painful and often malodorous wounds.

It is typically found in South America and parts of the Caribbean; however, APHIS notes that it has been steadily creeping north into Central America and Mexico since 2023.

“Many models projected this pest would reach the United States last year, but thanks to USDA’s phenomenal work and our cooperation with state, federal, and industry partners, we’ve held it off until now—when we are far more prepared to respond,” Hoskins said.

All southern ports of entry into the U.S. were closed to livestock trade last July following an order from Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.

USDA reported on Friday that mobile response trailers had been deployed in the infestation area and “sterile fly releases,” including 2 million in the air and 4 million on the ground per week, were underway.

“Movement control zones are in place, surveillance is intensified, and treatment supplies are available through [the Texas Animal Health Commission],” the department wrote on the social platform X. “We have defeated this pest before, and we will do it again.”

If unchecked, a New World Screwworm outbreak could have devastating economic consequences for Texas, the top cattle-producing state in the country.

A sizeable outbreak could result in $1.8 billion in losses for the Lone Star State Economy and cost producers upwards of $732 million per year, APHIS projected last year.

“Texas livestock producers and all Texans must now be vigilant in their efforts to manage and combat the invasive pest,” Texas Farm Bureau President Russell Boening said on Wednesday.

Shocking Allegations: Georgia Educator Faces Charges Over ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Incident in Classroom

A teacher in Georgia is facing multiple charges, including accusations that she coerced a student into watching the film Fifty Shades of Grey. This development adds to the list of serious allegations against her.

Maris Nichols, aged 25, was initially arrested on May 8, charged with two counts of inappropriate sexual contact. Since then, the investigation has uncovered more alleged victims, leading to additional charges such as grooming, child molestation, tampering with evidence, and more improper sexual contact, according to documents reviewed by Oxygen.

As of now, it remains unclear whether Nichols has entered a plea in response to these charges.

Defense attorney Christy Draper emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation, stating, “We are fully committed to uncovering the truth behind these allegations and ensuring that all relevant facts are considered.” Draper also highlighted Nichols’s right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, a fundamental legal protection.

Nichols, who was employed at Alexander High School in Douglasville, first came under legal scrutiny when she was accused of having sexual encounters with a student, both in a school closet and in a car parked on a residential driveway, according to arrest records examined by Oxygen.

Authorities issued additional arrest warrants on May 21 after identifying other alleged victims and evidence that Nichols may have attempted to cover her tracks.

According to the new warrants, Nichols allegedly had sex with a student in the back of his truck. Investigators allege that she also instructed one of her alleged victims to delete evidence from his phone and to lie if he was questioned.

In other incidents, she allegedly sent students nude photos, videos and video chats of herself masturbating with a sex toy.

Nichols also allegedly made one of her students watch the erotic film Fifty Shades of Grey, and per the warrant, “talked to her about different types of clitorises.”

Nichols is also accused of sending messages to students expressing romantic feelings, describing sexual acts she desired from them and explaining how she liked to be “choked, screamed at, slapped and whipped” during sex.

Spokespeople from Alexander High School and Douglas County School System did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Oxygen.

The district said it is “deeply troubled” by the allegations, according to People. The district “immediately launched an investigation” once it learned of the alleged misconduct.

The district also said in a statement published by 11Alive, “The Douglas County School System is committed to the academic success of every student. We are not able to comment further on this matter at this time.”

Alexander High School parents claimed that Nichols, a biology teacher, hadn’t been teaching the required curriculum.

One parent, who asked the outlet to omit their name, said families deserve to know what happened.

“We’re not asking for special treatment. We are asking for transparency, accountability, and fairness,” the parent said, per 11Alive. “Unfortunately, our concerns have repeatedly been met with resistance, limited communication, and a lack of meaningful reassurance that appropriate measures are being taken to protect all children involved, including our own.”

Top 5 Most Controversial Actions by Daenerys on Game of Thrones: A Ranked Analysis

During its lengthy run, HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” adapted from George R.R. Martin’s celebrated fantasy novels “A Song of Ice and Fire,” captivated audiences around the world. Among the show’s myriad characters, Daenerys Targaryen, portrayed by Emilia Clarke, stood out as a fan favorite. Her influence was so profound that many parents named their daughters after her, drawing inspiration from her title “Khaleesi,” which means “queen” in Dothraki, the language of her husband’s people. However, as the series unfolded, some of those parents might have reconsidered their choice, given the twists and turns that Daenerys’ character underwent.

Initially, Daenerys’ transformation was inspiring. After the tragic loss of her husband, Khal Drogo, and the subsequent magical incident in Season 1, she emerged from his funeral pyre with three dragon hatchlings, symbolizing her newfound strength and determination. This pivotal moment marked her rise as a formidable contender for the Iron Throne, once occupied by her Targaryen ancestors. As she journeyed through various lands, her actions, though sometimes extreme, seemed justifiable when targeting tyrants and slaveholders. Yet, as “Game of Thrones” approached its final chapters, her character took a darker turn.

Such a shift might have been anticipated, given her lineage; her father, King Aerys II Targaryen, was notoriously dubbed the “Mad King” for his erratic behavior. Nevertheless, it’s important to acknowledge that Daenerys committed acts ranging from unwise decisions to outright malevolence throughout the series. Here, we delve into some of her most notorious missteps, complete with spoilers for the entire show.

As the seventh season of “Game of Thrones” kicks off, the intelligence of key characters seems to take a nosedive. While Daenerys was never particularly known for her strategic brilliance, this is evident in the actions of her advisor, Tyrion Lannister, portrayed by Peter Dinklage. Alongside Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, Tyrion devises a plan to capture a wight, a zombified minion of the formidable White Walkers, in an effort to prove their existence to Cersei Lannister, played by Lena Headey. Although Jon rightly perceives the looming threat from beyond the Wall, the plan to present a single wight as evidence is flawed from the start.

Daenerys should have dismissed this ill-conceived strategy outright, yet she agrees to it. Consequently, Jon and his band of allies venture into the northern wilderness to capture a wight. In this phase of “Game of Thrones,” characters seem to traverse vast distances with the ease of video game avatars. Despite their success in capturing a wight, the mission turns disastrous. Daenerys is forced to intervene with her dragons to rescue the group, resulting in the Night King, portrayed by Vladimir Furdik, killing one of her dragons, Viserion, and transforming it into an ice dragon. The consequences of this reckless endeavor reverberate throughout the series. Way to go, team!

5. Agreeing to a doomed mission to capture a stray wight

It’s tough to ignore the fact that, when Season 7 of “Game of Thrones” begins, every major character inexplicably gets extremely stupid extremely quickly. While Daenerys was, honestly, never much known for her cunning mind, we do see this manifested in the man who’s now her Hand of the Queen, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), who concocts a plan alongside then King in the North Jon Snow (Kit Harington) to capture a single wight. Why? Well, Jon is desperately trying to convince anyone who will listen, including Tyrion’s spiteful older sister and this group’s sworn enemy Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), that while humans squabble over the Iron Throne in Westeros, a much larger threat is coming from the far north beyond the Wall. To be fair, Jon is right about this. What he and Tyrion are massively wrong about is this stupid plan to kidnap one singular wight — a zombified, simple version of the advanced and undead White Walkers who roam the far north — and bring it to Cersei to prove they’re not lying.

Daenerys shouldn’t even consider this plan, much less sign off on it. She does anyway, and a merry band of idiots, including Jon, traipse across the Wall to the north to find one wight. (This is, incidentally, the era of “Game of Thrones” where characters start fast-traveling like they’re in a video game.) Daenerys gets a wight for her trouble, but she also has to swoop in on her three dragons to save the group of boys from a whole army of wights and White Walkers … and in the process, the mysterious and powerful Night King (Vladimir Furdyk) kills one of her dragons, Viserion, and turns it into an ice dragon. Way to go, everyone!

4. Daenerys’ entire relationship with Jon Snow

To be completely fair to Daenerys, she doesn’t know that Jon Snow is her blood relative when the two first land in bed together shortly after the ill-advised wight gambit. Unfortunately for both of them, though, this is true. Unbeknownst to essentially everyone, Jon — assumed to be a bastard of the northern noble Eddard “Ned” Stark (Sean Bean in Season 1) — isn’t a bastard at all, but the legitimate product of a secret marriage between Daenerys’ older brother Rhaegar and Ned’s sister Lyanna. So why does anyone think Jon is a mere bastard? When Ned found out about his nephew, he promised a dying Lyanna that he would keep the baby safe … which meant hiding the newborn’s identity from Lyanna’s vengeful husband-to-be Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy). Instead, Ned presents Jon as his illegitimate son, a move that saves his life.

All of this is to say that, again, Daenerys has no idea that Jon is also her nephew when they embark on a romantic relationship. When he tells her, though, she’s … more or less fine with it. Not cool, Daenerys! Incest might be all the rage in Westeros, but that does not make it right!

3. The Loot Train attack was just overkill (literally)

As “Game of Thrones” heads into its final seasons, Daenerys gets more erratic and impulsive on the battlefield — something that’s illustrated perfectly in the Season 7 sequence where she attacks mostly unarmed Lannister forces. Though Tyrion is, again, her Hand of the Queen, Cersei and her twin brother Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) are enemies to Daenerys, so she devises a plan to intercept a whole bunch of Tyrell-gifted gold as it makes its way to the Iron Bank to pay off Cersei’s many debts.

While the caravans travel the Roseroad, Daenerys hops aboard her murder machine — Drogon, her largest dragon by far — torches most of it, killing men who may or may not even be fighting members of the Lannister army. Aside from ensuring that Cersei remains in debt, this particular battle is … a little much. Frankly, any time Daenerys fights from atop a dragon, it feels sort of egregious, but this attack, fun as it might be to watch, is brutal for no particular reason and just feels like Daenerys’ attempt to ensure that her enemies are terrified of her at all times. In fact, as she cultivates that abject terror, she starts threatening people who don’t comply, which brings us right to the second item on this list.

2. Murdered multiple men — even allies — when they refused to bend the knee

Again, Daenerys does do a lot of genuinely good things on “Game of Thrones” as well; she frees slaves like Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel), who becomes her closest ally and confidante, and she makes heartfelt attempts to leave slave-owning cities freed and better than she found them. Unfortunately, as much as Daenerys extends olive branches and promises of better lives to people, she’ll also turn on them almost immediately if she feels wronged. Missandei doesn’t meet this fate — she’s beheaded by Cersei while Daenerys watches, something that leads right into the number one pick on this list — but others do, and whether or not they really deserve it is a big question.

Even though Daenerys does a sort of clumsy job in “freeing” the slave cities — essentially, she kills the masters but doesn’t introduce any sort of new system, paving the way for bad actors to take advantage of the messes she leaves behind — her truly evil side starts showing after the aforementioned Loot Train attack when she meets Randyll and Dickon Tarly (James Faulkner and Tom Hopper). The father and brother of main character Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) refuse to bend the knee to Daenerys and accept her as their queen; instead of sparing them like Tyrion suggests, Daenerys kills both men instantly using Drogon’s fire.

The worst example of this, though, is Daenerys’ ally Varys (Conleth Hill). After Varys grows wary of Daenerys’ worst impulses, he attempts to supplant her … and he, too, gets a face full of fire with little to no preamble. This is absolutely the worst kind of thing Daenerys does during “Game of Thrones,” and the number one spot goes to her worst use of “trial by fire” by a long shot.

1. Killed most of the population of King’s Landing and leveled the city

What else could possibly be number one on a list of Daenerys Targaryen’s worst-ever misdeeds other than her most controversial move on all of “Game of Thrones?” In the series’ penultimate episode “The Bells,” Daenerys, furious and grief-stricken over the recent loss of Missandei — and, incidentally, the fact that her nephew-lover Jon Snow broke off their relationship after finding out that they’re related — finally brings her forces to King’s Landing, including a massive Dothraki army, her powerful Unsullied, and her remaining dragon Drogon. (Viserion, as you might remember, fell to the Night King and then perished during the Battle of Winterfell, and Rhaegal was shot out of the sky during a battle at sea, adding to Daenerys’ many troubles.) When she hears the bells of surrender ring from the Red Keep, it’s in Daenerys’ best interest to land in the city atop her dragon and declared it conquered. What does she do instead? She torches the city, killing countless civilians without a care in the world.

The episode brings us into the heart of King’s Landing to watch this massacre occur, as women and children run from the flames before being fully consumed and murdered. It’s unsurprising that, in the aftermath, Tyrion quits his post as Hand of the Queen, is summarily arrested, and tells Jon Snow that he might want to consider putting Daenerys down like Old Yeller. Jon, after much muttering and many conflicted feelings, does just that, stabbing a power-hungry Daenerys to death … after which Drogon flies away with her body. This isn’t just a cruddy ending for a great “Game of Thrones” character; it’s the most evil thing Daenerys ever does.

“Game of Thrones” is streaming on HBO Max now.

Immigrant’s Son Affirms: The American Dream Welcomes All

0

In collaboration with the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, The Post is spotlighting stories of US citizens reflecting on the meaning of the American dream as the country approaches 2026. Among these voices is Chinweze Ahaghotu, who serves as the Head of Portfolio Management at Galderma, a global leader in dermatological pharmaceuticals. Under his leadership, the company invests in pioneering research and development of new skin treatments.

Chinweze Ahaghotu’s journey is deeply rooted in the aspirations of his parents, who immigrated from Nigeria to the United States in the 1960s. His father arrived in Washington, DC, where he pursued higher education, ultimately achieving a PhD, and dedicated many years as a professor at Howard University. Following her husband, Ahaghotu’s mother also secured a graduate degree after moving from Nigeria.

Their goal was clear: to embrace the American dream and provide their children with opportunities for a better life as American citizens. This dream often included aspirations for their children to enter prestigious professions, such as medicine.

Like many children of immigrants, Ahaghotu faced the expectation of becoming a medical doctor, a common sentiment among families striving for success in a new country. However, Ahaghotu realized early on that the medical field wasn’t his calling due to his aversion to blood and the somber atmosphere of hospitals. Despite this, his passion for science, biology, and human health was unwavering, guiding him toward a career where he could make a significant impact without the clinical setting.

I knew I didn’t want to be a medical doctor because I don’t like blood. I’m squeamish around those things, the entire hospital setting tends to be a little depressing to me. But I’ve always loved science, I’ve always loved biology, pathophysiology. The notion of being involved in human health always resonated with me.

It’s hard to know if [this career] was my dream or whether it was a dream that came from my parents, but as far as I can remember, being involved in human health is something that I’ve always been excited and passionate about.

I absolutely do believe in the American dream. Fundamentally it starts off with the notion of a dream — that you can actually actually believe in an idea or an aspiration. That, by itself, is affirming — that you can think about more than you right now.

The American dream is intrinsic and fundamental to the founding of this country, it’s enshrined in the Declaration of Independence: all people are created equal; we are all entitled to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. The American dream is open to everyone.

The American Dream Video Project showcases real stories that illuminate pathways to opportunity. Featured at the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream (MCAAD), this series is part of the Center’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. MCAAD is Washington, DC’s newest cultural institution, offering interactive exhibits and stories about achieving the American Dream. For more information, visit mcaad.org.

Terrifying Encounter: Hiker Survives Grizzly Bear Attack and Shares Harrowing Tale

A man from San Diego has sustained severe injuries after being attacked and dragged by a grizzly bear during a hike in Montana.

Daniel Crago, aged 32, recounted the harrowing incident that took place on May 28 in an interview with CBS 8 and on the GoFundMe platform, where he is seeking financial help for his medical bills.

Speaking to CBS 8 on Friday, Crago recalled, “I noticed something to my left, and it turned out to be a smaller cub, but it was already behind me.”

“It kept walking in their direction and didn’t appear to notice me,” he added.

The frightening encounter happened in Glacier National Park, home to around 300 grizzly bears, when Crago suddenly found himself face-to-face with a much larger bear.

Crago told his hometown station: ‘At that point, I did what they kind of teach or train you to do: just alert the bear so you don’t startle. You make them aware. So, I did that.’

After attempting to alert the animal with a quick ‘Hey bear! Hey bear!’, the bear ‘charged,’ he said.

The animal quickly sunk its teeth into his right arm, Crago recalled.

‘I just kind of thought “this is it.” It bit down on my arm, dragged me maybe 20ft,’ Crago said.

‘I kind of flipped, landed on my backside, opened my eyes, and the bear had continued running down the mountain.’

He looked down at his arm and saw his hand ‘just kind of dangling,’ he told hiking website Backpacker.com.

‘It was just pure panic… I was screaming for help, and started climbing back up toward the trail.’

Thankfully, some nearby hikers were able to help the hiker stop the bleeding and stabilize his arm.

Crago also told CBS 8 that in another stroke of luck, ‘the bear didn’t injure the wrist, didn’t injure the elbow. It was just a complete crush of the bones, the forearm bones.’

He was then airlifted to a hospital in Kalispell, Montana, he said.

Three surgeries later, Crago ‘will need at least one more,’ he told prospective donors in a description attached to his GoFundMe.

Posting from his home in San Diego, Crago said the costs he’s had to incur so far have been ‘overwhelming.’

‘I am reaching out for help to cover these expenses so I can continue my recovery without the added stress of financial hardship,’ he wrote

He thanked the hikers he said ‘saved [his] life’ and friends who visited him at the Logan Hospital staff in Kalispell as well as its staff.

‘Your kindness and expertise saved my life, and I am thankful beyond words. If you are able to support my fundraiser, your generosity will help me move forward and heal. Thank you for being part of my journey.’
