Ohio’s Old West End Festival Erupts in Chaos: 12 Injured in Intense Gunmen Standoff – Hunt for Shooters Continues

0

A confrontation involving two armed individuals escalated into a shooting near a cherished historical festival in Ohio, resulting in 12 individuals being injured, with two in critical condition. The gunmen remain at large, intensifying the situation.

Authorities from Toledo and Lucas County, along with several emergency medical teams, swiftly arrived at the scene of the gunfire, which erupted around 5:30 PM on Saturday, in the vicinity of Delaware Avenue and Glenwood Avenue near the Old West End Festival.

Responders found numerous people suffering from gunshot wounds, with victims ranging from 14 to 61 years old. Most of the injured were reported to be in their early 20s, and among them, two were critically wounded.

By Saturday night, no arrests had been made. During a press briefing, police indicated that the incident likely involved at least two individuals exchanging gunfire.

Joseph Heffernan, the Deputy Chief of Toledo Police, stated, “It seems that there were at least two shooters, and we believe they were exchanging shots with each other.”

Witness Kevin Berry told the Daily Mail he personally observed at least five or six victims being struck by gunfire, including one graze wound and another shot to the head.

‘Everybody hit the deck,’ he said.

He described seeing an elderly woman fall to the ground, who he believed appeared to be experiencing heart attack symptoms during the commotion.

Berry, a Navy veteran with medical training, said he heard up to eight gunshots and saw a gun drop, but did not see the shooter, who he believed fled on foot.

He also said the shooting appeared to come out of nowhere, with the first gunshots heard while the band was still playing. He added that it appeared to be entirely random, with no clear target or intent.

The veteran described running around attempting to flag down officers for those who had been struck by gunfire, telling Daily Mail that police reached the scene ‘quickly.’

Police have not yet released a general description of the suspects. However, Investigative Lt Dan Gerken said authorities do not believe any of the injured individuals are suspects.

‘We’re way early in this for questions about what we have and who we want caught,’ he said.

‘I’m feeling good about where we are right now, but we’ll need the community’s help,’ he added, noting that authorities are speaking with multiple people, including victims and witnesses, and reviewing footage from the area.

‘As far as violence, this is over the top. Twelve people is a lot. This is way over the top.’

Videos shared on social media showed chaos as people ran from the scene, with injured victims seen walking in bloodied clothes and others taken away on stretchers.

Tony Toledo, a Defiance, Ohio resident, shared a chilling Facebook post saying he attended the Old West End Festival to relive his college days when shots were fired just 30ft away from him.

‘I was eating ribs. Dropped the ribs. Every person at the park stopped to the ground. I am ok,’ Toledo wrote.

‘Unknown to me the shooter ran past me ten feet way. He dropped his gun on ground ten feet from me,’ he added. ‘Another attendee was standing over the gun screaming for the police to get it. Cops got it immediately.’

‘People were bleeding. EMTs were called,’ Toledo wrote, adding that he learned two people had died, though that detail has not yet been confirmed by police.

‘There was a cop waving an automatic rifle screaming for us to leave the park,’ he said. ‘He didn’t need to tell me twice.’

Chief Heffernan said there is a large amount of evidence that still needs to be sorted, noting that a large number of officers were assigned to festival security and that mobile Toledo police cameras fed into the city’s real-time crime center.

He added that the shooting is another example of how gunfire can endanger people who have no involvement in a dispute and are simply going about their daily lives.

‘Everybody has to treat people like they would like to be treated,’ Heffernan said during Saturday’s briefing.

‘If we have groups of young people who think this is exciting, it’s not. This is a perfect example of when bullets start flying, they can strike anyone,’ he added. ‘We’ll be doing outreach, especially with juveniles, for community policing.’

Toledo safety director George Kral, a former police chief, also made a public plea for cell phone footage that could help police identify the suspects.

‘I know there is information out there. Look through your cellphone video and reach out to TPD. This is one of the most iconic festivals in Toledo and it’s a shame that something like this had to ruin it,’ Kral said.

‘We can keep you anonymous. If someone is worried about their personal safety, we can take care of it,’ he added. ‘Please help us help you.’

Toledo mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz posted on Facebook after the shooting: ‘Toledo has faced more adversity over the years than most cities, and our citizens always rally together and pull through. This will be no exception.’

‘What happened today at the Old West End Festival, sadly, has happened in too many American cities. But we should never shrug our shoulders and accept it as the price of living in a free society. As a country, we must do better,’ he added.

‘Toledo is resilient and will emerge stronger because of the unity we show in this moment-and because of the brave men and women of the Toledo Police Department and Toledo Fire & Rescue Department, whose swift actions today saved lives.’

The mayor concluded: ‘Let’s pray for them tonight as we also pray for the victims of this senseless shooting, our city and country.’

Toledo Fire and Rescue Chief Allison Armstrong said all patients were transported from the scene within an hour and taken to local hospitals, thanking fire and rescue crews for their swift response.

Police also said during the press conference that officers were already on the scene providing security for the festival and were able to respond quickly.

‘The investigation currently includes scenes in the area of Delaware Avenue and Robinwood Avenue,’ Toledo Police Department said.

‘Residents and visitors are asked to avoid the area and expect a significant police presence as officers continue their search and investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,’ they added.

In a statement to Facebook, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine wrote: ‘I am deeply concerned about the situation in Toledo tonight.’

‘Summer festivals should be safe spaces for families to spend time together without fear of violence,’ he added.

DeWine concluded his statement by saying he was ‘praying for everyone impacted by the incident at the Old West Festival’ and is ‘confident that law enforcement will locate the suspects involved in this senseless crime.’

Toledo was hosting its 53rd West End Festival, described as the ‘biggest party of the year’ celebrating ‘one of the largest historic districts in the country.’

Several hundred people were at the event, Kral said, adding: ‘This is one of the most iconic festivals in Toledo, and it’s a shame that something like this had to ruin it.’

Live music, dozens of food vendors, a beer garden, house tours and shopping kicked off with the King Wamba Carnival Parade on Saturday morning, opening the two-day event.

The festival posted to Facebook after the shooting that it would be cancelled on Sunday.

The post read: ‘Too often we turn on the news and learn of a celebration somewhere that turns into a tragedy. Now, that news comes from our own neighborhood. We are heartbroken about those that were injured at the Old West End Festival.’

‘Many people want to know how we proceed from such a dark place. After discussion with festival organizers, law enforcement and the City of Toledo, we feel that it would not be compassionate, responsible or possible to continue festival,’ it added.

‘Therefore, all festival events for Sunday, June 7, are cancelled.’

Revitalize Your Posture: Top 5 Standing Exercises Women Over 60 Should Incorporate Daily

Trainer Reveals 5 Simple Standing Exercises to Improve Posture for Women Over 60

Reflecting on my mother, who used to stand taller than me at 5’5″, I now notice a significant change. As she recently celebrated her 70th birthday, it became evident that she is now shorter than my 5’3″ frame, something I hadn’t observed happening over the years.

After the age of 60, subtle changes occur in the body that can alter our posture. In my role as a certified personal trainer and yoga instructor, I’ve witnessed how these changes can be mitigated, and in some cases, even reversed with consistent daily practices. The encouraging news is that you don’t need a gym membership or a mat routine to improve your posture.

By incorporating these five standing exercises into your day, you can enhance your posture, improve your breathing, and reduce the effects of years of slouching—all in just 10 to 15 minutes a day.

These five standing exercises take 10 to 15 minutes a day and can help you stand taller, breathe easier, and undo years of rounding.

Why Posture Breaks Down After 60

Caregiver takecare older man that having Sarcopenia or muscle loss. Sarcopenia is a degenerative disease of the muscle usually caused by the natural consequence of aging.
Shutterstock

After the age of 60, we begin to lose muscle mass and strength at an accelerated rate due to sarcopenia. Women are even more at risk, as menopause causes a sharp drop in estrogen levels which contributes to lower bone density and a decline in collagen quality, affecting the vertebrae, ligaments, and discs of the spine.

This can accelerate osteoporosis, the loss of bone mass over time. Weakened back muscles combined with a decrease in spinal integrity can lead to a rounding of the upper back, called kyphosis.

Why Standing Work Matters

It matters that these exercises are performed while standing because that’s how most of our life happens. Unfortunately that is becoming less true with the increasing prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle, sitting at office jobs all week, binging Netflix all weekend, but that is to our detriment. To reverse or prevent poor posture, we must work against gravity, and that is best done standing tall.

There are lots of great floor and seated exercises that can help restore or reinforce good posture, but for many older adults, getting down and up off of the floor unassisted is not possible or risky. I chose standing exercises for this routine because you’ll get the maximum benefits from not just working the upper back muscles, but also the muscles of the legs and glutes.

Most of these exercises also utilize the support of a wall. Using the wall is a great way to improve your posture, as it gives you tactile feedback and promotes proper alignment.

Why Daily Repetition Works

Female worker sit at desk touch back suffer from lower spinal spasm, hurt unhealthy biracial woman stretch have strong backache.

We form movement patterns over a lifetime, day in and day out reinforcing the same habits. If you sit at a desk, hunched over every day, your body starts to conform to that shape. The muscles of the back weaken, the muscles of the chest tighten. The hip flexors get tighter and shorter, the glutes disengage. The neck leans forward, the shoulders round.

To shift back into alignment, it’s not enough to train the body a few times a week. Sure, that’s better than nothing, but to counteract a lifetime of less than perfect posture and the accelerating effects of aging, daily consistency is key. We aren’t just training the body during our workout, we are introducing new movement patterns to replace the old ones.

Band Pull-Apart

I actually use this exercise with most of my clients every day as a warm up. It targets posture specifically by strengthening the muscles that pull the shoulder blades back. This counteracts the tight chest and rounded shoulders of kyphosis.

Muscles Trained: Upper back, rear shoulders, shoulder blade stabilizers

How to Do It:

  • Hold a resistance band out in front of you in both hands at shoulder height.
  • Pull the band apart by squeezing your shoulder blades together; the band should move toward your chest.
  • Slowly return to the starting position.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Leaning backwards
  • Shrugging the shoulders up toward the ears
  • Bending the elbows

Recommended Sets and Reps: 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps, resting 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

Form Tip: If you’re unsure of your form, try standing with your back against a wall. This will ensure you don’t lean backward. Keep the back of your head against the wall and your shoulders down.

Easier: Use a lighter band or do the motion without resistance. More advanced: Pause for 2 to 3 seconds at the ending position.

Back of Head Press

I use this one in my yoga classes regularly. A common postural misalignment is the head jutting forward, caused by a weakening in the muscles of the back of the neck. Think of how someone looks when they are looking down at their phone all the time. This move also opens up the chest.

Muscles Trained: Deep neck muscles, upper back, chest (through extension)

How to Do It:

  • Use a yoga block or a folded up towel, or simply interlace your fingers together and bring this to the back of your head, not your neck.
  • Gently press the back of your head into the block, towel, or hands, keeping the chin slightly tucked.
  • Hold for 5 to 10 seconds.
  • Relax and repeat.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Treating it like a backbend; you are not leaning back into your hands. It’s an isometric hold, the head pushing back into the hands and the hands pushing equally into the head.
  • Arching the lower back
  • Using too much force

Recommended Sets and Reps: 3 to 5 sets of 5 to 10 second holds, resting 15 to 30 seconds between sets.

Form Tip: Be sure your chin stays slightly tucked. Your back neck muscles should feel engaged, not compressed.

Easier: Use a soft towel instead of a block, or stand with your back against a wall and push your head into the towel against the wall if your arms get tired or can’t reach. Advanced: Hold up to 30 seconds.

Wall Squats With Stability Ball

When I train posture, I never neglect the glutes and core. This move strengthens the glutes while promoting an upright alignment of the spine. The support of the ball practically forces proper form.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, quadriceps, core

How to Do It:

  • Place a stability ball between your lower back and the wall.
  • Stand with your feet slightly forward and shoulder width apart.
  • Slowly bend the knees to a squat position. Start with just a small quarter squat.
  • Push through the heels to stand back up.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Knees collapsing inward
  • Leaning forward
  • Going too deep into the squat

Recommended Sets and Reps: 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps, resting 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

Form Tip: If you look down, you should still be able to see your toes. The knees do not go past the toes, blocking them from view. Keep the chest lifted, the pelvis neutral, and the spine tall.

Easier: Keep it to the 45-degree bend or less. Advanced: Hold for a few seconds at the bottom of each squat, add a wall sit at the end of your set focusing on keeping the chest lifted and open, or hold a weight in your hands.

Hip Hinge

This move trains the whole posterior chain of the body, teaching proper hip mechanics.

Muscles Trained: Hamstrings, glutes, back, posterior chain

How to Do It:

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart.
  • Place hands on hips.
  • Push hips straight back, letting the knees bend just slightly. Start with just a 45 degree angle.
  • Keep spine long and the chest open.
  • Squeeze your glutes to return to standing.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Rounding the back
  • Bending the knees too much; remember it isn’t a squat
  • Craning the neck; keep your eye gaze a few feet in front of you on the floor

Recommended Sets and Reps: 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps, resting 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

Form Tip: Look in a mirror, standing sideways, and watch your form. Keep your spine neutral, no rounding, as you tip forward. Make sure your knees aren’t locked out. You should feel the tension in your hamstrings, not your lower back. I always say: You are strengthening your back, not straining it.

Easier: Step your feet wider apart if you feel unbalanced, and keep the hinge to just 45 degrees. I don’t recommend going much further than that. You may also find it easier with your glutes touching a wall behind you. Advanced: Add a kettlebell or dumbbell in your hands for a deadlift variation.

Wall Thoracic Extension

Finally, a great stretch after all that work. This move is used by physical therapists to restore mid-back mobility. It reminds me of the downward dog stretch I love so much in yoga class. It targets one of the main areas where we tend to lose flexibility as we age and the culprit of kyphosis: the thoracic spine.

Muscles Trained: Thoracic spine (mid-back mobility), lats

How to Do It:

  • Stand facing a wall about 1 to 2 feet away.
  • Place your hands on the wall at shoulder height.
  • Walk your hands higher up the wall as you gently drop your chest toward the floor, pressing the hips slightly back, until you find a deep but pain-free stretch.
  • Hold for 3 to 5 slow breaths.
  • Return to upright position.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Overarching the lower back. The lumbar spine tends to be more flexible than the thoracic spine, so tightness in the thoracic can cause the lumbar to take on more work than it should. Think about gently tucking the tailbone under and pulling the ribs in to stabilize the lower back.
  • Pushing too aggressively; find a stretch where you can comfortably breathe.

Recommended Sets and Reps: 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 5 breaths, resting 15 to 30 seconds between sets.

Form Tip: Think about your chest melting toward the floor. Don’t overarch your lower back. You should feel the stretch in your upper back, and down into your lats.

Easier: Widen the hands apart more to free up your back if it’s especially tight. Advanced: Place the forearms or elbows on the wall instead of the hands, or even bend the elbows and bring your hands behind your head to deepen the stretch.

Your Daily Routine

Workout Training Exercise Plan And Daily Schedule
Shutterstock

Do these five exercises in the order in which I presented them:

  • Band Pull-Apart: 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps, resting 30 to 45 seconds between sets.
  • Back of Head Press: 3 to 5 sets of 5 to 10 second holds, resting 15 to 30 seconds between sets.
  • Wall Squats With Stability Ball: 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps, resting 30 to 45 seconds between sets.
  • Hip Hinge: 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps, resting 30 to 45 seconds between sets.
  • Wall Thoracic Extension: 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 5 breaths, resting 15 to 30 seconds between sets.

This routine should take 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Honestly, I think you’ll feel less neck pain, easier breathing, and a feeling of being taller immediately after completing this routine, but with daily consistency, the results will become permanent.

Habits That Undo Your Progress

Shutterstock

Not to point fingers, but there is a particular gym-goer I know who comes to mind. Let’s call him Sam. I see Sam in the gym for hours almost every day. He must be in his 70s, and he is in fabulous shape. He runs, he lifts heavy weights, he does amazing walking lunges. However, I observe that he is probably spending 60% of his time at the gym on his phone, and when he is looking at his phone, his back is so rounded, his head jutted forward, his posture a complete mess. I can’t help but think that he is undoing so much of his hard work in the gym before he even leaves it.

One of my favorite yoga teachers described what she has observed as the “cashew-ization” of America. We spend so much time in our comfortable chairs or cozied up on our couches, we have become cashew-shaped. It’s my favorite nut, but I wouldn’t want to look like one.

Spending too much time hunched over our phones and becoming cashews on our couches are the two most common everyday habits that come to mind for me that undo our posture progress. Simple adjustments are to limit the time you spend on your phone. Sam should leave his phone in his locker; I know it’s too tempting to keep at hand. Limit your social media time. Don’t binge watch. Practice self-discipline and get up, stretch, and go for a walk. If you must work at a desk, consider a standing desk, or set a timer to remind you to get up and walk around for 5 minutes every hour.

When to Check With Your Doctor

Always consult with your physician before beginning any exercise program, especially if you have:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Hyperkyphosis due to spinal fractures or any spinal injuries
  • Arthritis or osteoarthritis
  • Increased fall risk or vertigo
  • Hypertension or high blood pressure
  • Shoulder injuries or rotator cuff issues

St. John’s Faces Critical Season Turnaround Following Shutout by Alabama, Led by Ace Tyler Fay

0

St. John’s journey to the Super Regionals, a stage they hadn’t reached in 14 years, got off to a rocky start.

After a stunning victory over the No. 10 seed Florida State the previous weekend, the Johnnies faced a formidable challenge against Alabama. They struggled to make a mark against Alabama’s formidable pitcher, Tyler Fay, while their own ace, Liam O’Leary, faltered significantly.

This combination led to a disappointing 8-0 loss against the seventh-seeded Crimson Tide at Sewell-Thomas Stadium on Saturday night.

To keep their dreams of reaching the College World Series alive for the first time since 1980, St. John’s now faces the daunting task of winning the next two games.

This uphill battle is made even more challenging by the impressive form of Alabama, which boasts a perfect 4-0 record in the NCAA Tournament and a dominant 24-6 tally on their home turf.

The Red Storm are making their first appearance in the Super Regionals since 2012.

Their run to the NCAA Tournament marked their second trip in three years to the postseason after a six-year drought.

Fay limited St. John’s (35-25) to two hits over 7 ¹/₃ innings.

He struck out nine and walked three.

The Red Storm’s best chance against Fay came in the seventh.

They loaded the bases with none out, but Fay retired the next three batters in order, ending the threat.

O’Leary, meanwhile, lasted only 3 ¹/₃ frames.

He fell apart in the fourth, walking four hitters and forcing in two runs.

Justin Lebron, Alabama’s superstar shortstop and a projected top 20 draft pick, had three hits and two RBIs for the Crimson Tide (41-19).

The setback snapped the Johnnies’ eight-game winning streak and marked their fifth shutout of the season.

Southpaw Evan Chaffee, an Alabama transfer, is expected to get the start Sunday afternoon as St. John’s hopes to keep its season alive.

Debut Goal from Yengi Secures Draw for Socceroos in Thrilling Match Against Switzerland

0

Tete Yengi scored his maiden goal, helping the Socceroos secure a draw against Switzerland in their final preparation match ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

The Swiss, ranked 19th in the world, largely controlled the game at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium, especially during the first half. Swiss winger Dan Ndoye opened the scoring in the 14th minute, setting the tone for the match.

Despite facing continuous pressure, the Socceroos emerged more resilient after halftime. Nestory Irankunda proved to be Australia’s most formidable player on the field.

Australia’s strategy involved utilizing direct long passes and counter-attacks to carve out opportunities, which paid off when Yengi netted the equalizer in the 56th minute.

Stay informed with our reliable daily news updates and insights delivered straight to your inbox.

Centre-back Cameron Burgess put a long-ball forward to midfielder Connor Metcalfe, who then squared the ball for a Yengi to slide in.

Debutant Cristian Volpato, who switched allegiance from Italy, headlined the youthful starting line-up, though he made little impact on the game.

Volpato started as a right-sided attacker and grew into the first half as he spent more time in inside pockets, before being substituted at halftime.

Yengi also started on debut among seven changes, with Harry Souttar captaining Australia for the first time and the impressive Patrick Beach in goal.

In the fourth minute, Irankunda forced a corner then whipped in the corner that Yengi glanced wide.

Then Switzerland started to turn the screws, with Beach denying Ndoye in the eighth and 12th minutes.

But two minutes later, Granit Xhaka sliced through the Australian defensive lines with a wonderful ball and this time Ndoye had the quality to trap the ball then fire past Beach.

The Socceroos started to find a foothold in the game after the drinks break.

Australia came desperately close to scoring in the 45th minute when Volpato curled in a wicked free kick to the back post and Souttar rose highest but turned his header over the bar.

At halftime, coach Tony Popovic brought on Metcalfe for Volpato among several changes.

Four minutes into the second half, Irankunda won the ball with a powerful challenge, burst forward and let rip with a venomous strike that Kobel tipped onto the bar.

The Socceroos kept growing into the game and 10 minutes later, the well-deserved goal to Yengi arrived in a hurry.

Popovic emptied his bench and the Socceroos held on through a Swiss flurry, including Cedric Itten turning a late header over the bar.

With an average age of 24.6, the team was the youngest side played by Popovic.

Switzerland ended the match with 63 per cent possession, nine shots to five and seven corners to two.

Speaking after the match, Yengi said it was “an amazing feeling” to score his first goal on debut.

“You work hard for moments like this and I’m happy to help the team today and get my first game, first of all, and also my first goal,” he said.

“To be out here on the pitch, one week away from the World Cup, you can only dream of moments like this. I’m so grateful for the opportunity and hopefully we can go into the World Cup with a positive.”

Popovic said his side stepped up in the second half.

“I think it’s nice that we got a result in the end. We’re playing a very strong nation, so I’m pleased about that,” he said.

“Good response in the second half. Lot of different players on the field, and the young boys acquitted themselves well.

“I think this all plays a part in the experience for the players.

“It’s nice not to have any injuries after this game, that was the most important part. We were competitive and we scored a really nice goal, so I’m happy and looking forward to next week.”

The game was the final warm-up for the Socceroos before they take on Türkiye in their first World Cup group match in Vancouver on Sunday 14 June AEST.

Scott Pelley Unleashes Fiery Critique on Paramount: ‘CBS is in Turmoil

0

Scott Pelley, the former correspondent for 60 Minutes, has made striking remarks in a recent interview with The New York Times, alleging that CBS News is in a state of disarray.

Pelley, 68, appeared emotional as he expressed to the Times that he believes there is a subtle political bias present at both CBS News and 60 Minutes, according to a newly released promotional video.

During his conversation with Lulu Garcia-Navarro from the Times, Pelley claimed that CBS leadership has shown favoritism towards a particular political party.

This interview, marking Pelley’s first since his dismissal from CBS News on Tuesday night, will be available to stream on the Times’ YouTube Channel this Sunday. His firing followed a Monday confrontation with Nick Bilton, the new executive producer of 60 Minutes.

In the clip, Pelley also shared his optimism that CBS executives might reconsider their current direction.

‘My hope is that the leadership of Paramount will say to themselves, “OK. This isn’t working. We have respected journalists saying that there is a thumb on the scale for one political party over another.”

‘And there’s a subtle political bias I’ve never seen at 60 Minutes before. Or at CBS News before,’ he says.

A visibly emotional Pelley adds during another portion: ‘We can save this. It’s possible to land this plane. But right now, CBS News, in my view, is on fire.’

Former 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley sat down with the New York Times this week to discuss his firing, in an interview set to air Sunday

Former 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley sat down with the New York Times this week to discuss his firing, in an interview set to air Sunday

The saga started with a Monday team meeting where Pelley accused CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss of ‘murdering 60 Minutes’ in front of staff.

He then turned to Bilton, a filmmaker with no broadcast experience, by framing him as unqualified for the position and loyal to only Weiss, a former right-leaning opinion writer hired by then-new Paramount CEO David Ellison in October.

A recording of the meeting was promptly leaked to the press.

Pelley was fired the following day. A CBS statement slamming Pelley for ‘misconduct’ made the move known that night.

Weiss went on to tell staffers during a conference call on Wednesday: ‘Despite our attempts to engage with Scott Pelley and to find a way back, unfortunately we weren’t able to do so, and so we had to part ways.

‘We did not want that to happen, but that’s the path that he chose,’ she said.

Weiss said she was ‘only interested in working in a newsroom that is built on trust and mutual respect’ and that Pelley had ‘broken’ that cardinal rule.

Remaining correspondents Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, and Jon Wertheim all announced their decision to stay with the show that Friday in a memo to staff, which made no mention of Pelley.

A wave of firings hit 60 Minutes the week before – a point Pelley repeatedly raised during the Monday meeting.

He told Bilton – who replaced longtime executive Tanya Simon – that he has ‘slender qualifications for [his] job’ and that he ‘will never be welcome [at 60 Minutes]’, a transcript of the leaked recording showed.

The conversation that followed grew so tense that Bilton eventually had to tell Pelley that he would not be ‘intimidated.’

CBS’ managing editor, Charles Forelle, also had to step in twice to say Pelley was being ‘rude’, according to a recording obtained by multiple outlets.

Stahl, Whitaker and Wertheim all had sharp critiques for how Weiss handled the staffing changes the week before in their statement.

‘We’re still deeply upset by the firings of Tanya [Simon] and Draggan [Mihailovich], strong leaders who everyone respected,’ they wrote. Simon and Mihailovich had been the show’s top producers.

The trio also said they also never received an ‘explanation’ as to why correspondents Cecilia Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi were fired.

Alfonsi blamed CBS’s decision not to renew her contract on a clash she had with CBS brass back in December, after a decision to hold one of her segments that had been critical of the Trump administration.

Pelley stuck up for her, Simon, Vega, and Mihailovich during his tirade, calling the execution of their exits ‘cruel.’

In his first of two official statements on Tuesday night, Pelley claimed that ‘new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story.’

‘I’ve been told to include assertions that are unverified. To date, in every case, I have managed to ignore these instructions or refuse them,’ he wrote.

Another portion claimed the people around him as of late had not been performing up to par.

Pelley issued a second statement to The New York Times on Wednesday following Weiss’s conference call.

He told the paper: ‘Weiss knows what she said is not true. In the meeting on Tuesday, in which I was effectively fired, there was no effort of any kind to ‘find a way back,’ as Weiss had said in the editorial meeting.

‘At no point did anyone in the Tuesday meeting suggest that there could be steps taken by either side that would lead to a resolution’.

He published a new message to Instagram on Saturday, shortly before the Sunday Times interview was announced.

‘To all of you who have been so kind, you are the wind in my sails. So deeply grateful,’ he wrote, referencing an attached photo of him sailing a ship .

Bilton, meanwhile, praised Stahl, Whitaker, and Wertheim hours prior to their announcement that they would stay in his own Thursday email to staff.

In it, he doubled down on his commitment to the show’s editorial independence.

‘We talked about what makes 60 Minutes exceptional, about the traditions and legacy of the past, about how you do the work that produces such momentous pieces,’ the former New York Times columnist and filmmaker wrote.

‘We also talked about change: About new audiences, new platforms, and new ways of storytelling that these new audiences need.

‘We’ll speak more about that in the weeks to come.’

Rob Sand Teams Up with Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear in Strategic Iowa Rally to Boost Democratic Bid for Governor

0

DES MOINES, Iowa — For the first time since securing his place as the Democratic nominee for Iowa’s gubernatorial race, Rob Sand is set to energize supporters at a rally this Sunday. He will be joined by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who is lending his influential support as the countdown to November’s election begins.

The contest between Sand and his Republican rival, Zach Lahn, is shaping up to be among the most fiercely contested in the nation. Voters in Iowa are grappling with pressing issues, including a budget shortfall, a struggling agricultural sector, and a widespread cancer crisis.

Despite Sand’s efforts to distance himself from partisan politics, the Democratic Party is placing its bets on him to carve a new path in Iowa, following a series of electoral disappointments in recent years.

“We are fully committed to turning Iowa blue,” declared Beshear, who also chairs the Democratic Governors Association and is considered a potential presidential candidate for 2028. “The time for change is now, and Iowans recognize that Rob Sand is the leader who will prioritize their needs and uplift families rather than leaving them behind.”

Sand, who faced no challengers in the Democratic primary, now knows his opponent after Tuesday’s primaries decided a tumultuous five-way race among Republicans.

Little known before his bid for governor, Lahn made a splash as a business owner criticizing farm consolidation and tax breaks for corporate giants, a regenerative farmer who subscribes to Robert F. Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Again” movement and a former political operative who galvanized Iowa’s conservative grassroots.

Iowa has open races for both governor and U.S. senator for the first time since 1968, plus three battleground congressional races. National attention on the state has soared in recent months, drawing President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance to Iowa.

Democrats will have an uphill climb with a 200,000-person deficit in statewide voter registration, and they are outnumbered in every House district. Sand, along with Senate candidate Josh Turek, say they can win over independents and Republicans who are frustrated with party politics and a Republican trifecta in Washington and Des Moines that they blame for the state’s challenges.

Turek will face U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, who already has portrayed Turek as a liberal puppet for party leader Sen. Chuck Schumer.

Lahn has also rejected Sand’s nonpartisan pitch.

“Rob Sand is not a moderate,” Lahn said in his victory speech Tuesday. “He’s a liberal career politician pretending to be someone he’s not.”

Sand says divided government is a good thing

Sand is vocal about his dislike of partisanship, his distrust of both political parties and his desire for divided government in Iowa. He says he thinks most Iowans feel the same.

Even if Sand is elected governor in November, he will likely have to work with Republican majorities in the state House and Senate, which recently passed bills to restrict the executive’s power that outgoing Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law.

“I’m not here to tell you that the answer to 10 years of one-party control is to give the other party 10 years of one-party control. I don’t think that’s right,” Sand said Tuesday after casting his primary ballot. “But I do think that it’s time to say enough to the people who have had 10 years of one-party control. It’s time for balanced government in Iowa.”

Neither Sand or Lahn use their party’s traditional blue or red in campaign materials, opting instead for green. They both say they aren’t beholden to their party establishments and that Iowans want a new direction, though Lahn’s Republican Party has held a statehouse trifecta for nearly a decade.

Sand’s campaign has given about $750,000 to the Iowa Democratic Party already this cycle, funding that Republicans call hypocritical for a candidate who claims he is not a party man. The Sand campaign says that sum reflects his investment in a state party-run coordinated campaign that will help him get elected as governor, even as it also supports candidates up and down the ballot.

Beshear brings national support as he considers his own future

As Democrats continue to debate what went wrong in 2024 and the direction of the party, Beshear has offered up his own example as the leader of a red state for lessons on how the party can go forward.

Beshear said he is trying to be a “voice of reason in the chaos” of Trump’s administration and that he is comfortable being listed among the names of Democrats considering a presidential bid in 2028, even as he said he is focused on the critical midterms.

In addition to rallying with Sand, Beshear will also be at a “Beers with Beshear” fundraiser for congressional candidate Sarah Trone Garriott, who wants to unseat Republican Rep. Zach Nunn in the competitive House district that includes Des Moines. Beshear said he will see Turek too.

The Democratic Governors Association, which Beshear chairs, gave the Iowa Democratic Party about $140,000 so far this cycle, according to filing reports.

Tragic Snorkeling Accident in Florida: Flight Attendant Kellie Melinda Williams Discovered on Beach

In a tragic incident off the coast of South Florida, an American Airlines flight attendant lost her life after being struck by a boat while snorkeling. Her body was later discovered washed ashore on a local beach.

The victim, Kellie Melinda Williams, was found by two fishermen on Hollywood Beach around 8 p.m. Wednesday. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, as reported by CBS Miami, her body exhibited injuries indicative of a collision with a vessel.

On Saturday, authorities identified the 31-year-old Williams and confirmed that her death resulted from blunt force trauma.

Investigators noted that Williams was snorkeling or diving near Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park on June 3. Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation investigators are collaborating with Hollywood detectives to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the case.

As of now, no information has been released regarding the boat involved or its occupants, and no charges have been filed related to Williams’ death.

One witness recalled seeing people pulling Williams’ body out of the water Wednesday night.

“Two fishermen were fishing right off the beach, and I saw them from my window pulling something, then I saw them drag something onto the shoreline,” Emilio Benitez told NBC6 South Florida. “And it turned out to be a lady’s body.”

Williams’ parents said their daughter was an accomplished snorkeler, describing her as a “great person,” according to the outlet.

The California native had recently moved to the Sunshine State and had gotten married within the last year.

The Miami-based Association of Professional Flight Attendants announced Williams’ death to her colleagues in an Instagram post on Friday.

“It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our colleague and fellow MIA Flight Attendant, Kellie Williams,” the organization said in an Instagram post. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Kellie’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

Williams was employed by American Airlines.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague,” the airline told NBC 6 South Florida. “Our thoughts and support are with her family, loved ones and colleagues at this time.”

Her role in “The Towering Inferno,” where she starred with legends Paul Newman and Steve McQueen, solidified her status in Hollywood’s celebrated era of disaster movies.

She later starred in The Concorde… Airport ’79, continuing her run in the popular disaster film genre of the era.

If you guessed Susan Blakely, you’re spot on!

Back in 2021, Blakely got candid about the surprising way she landed her breakout role in Rich Man, Poor Man.

‘I had done a movie called Report to the Commissioner. Carol Burnett saw the film. She was friends with [producer] Harve Bennett, and she told him he should cast me,’ she told Closer.

‘I never knew until later. Carol is an idol of mine, but she never told me because she’s so humble. She didn’t want to take credit.’

Reflecting on her time with her co-stars Nick Nolte and Peter Strauss, she said, ‘Oh, I love Nick. He is such a consummate actor, but also a nice, fun guy. And Peter was fabulous – we’ve reconnected recently.

‘There were other leading men in that show who were fabulous, too: Bill Bixby, who my character married, Ed Asner and Robert Reed.’

Blakely also shared how she came to appear in the Newman disaster film The Towering Inferno.

‘I probably wouldn’t have said yes to Towering Inferno if I had read the script! But I was on another shoot, and my agent told me who else was doing it. I was just in love with Paul Newman. He was my biggest crush. So when I heard Paul Newman was in it, I said if he was doing it, I was doing it.’

When asked if she spent much time with Newman on set, she said, ‘Yes, but we weren’t in a lot of scenes together. When William Holden said, “Susie, I want you to meet Paul Newman,” I looked at him and my heart started to race! He was the sexiest man, the best actor, and he turned out to be the kindest man, too.’

‘I also got to know Joanne Woodward. They had a bunch of us actors out to Malibu. They were just such down-to-earth people.’

She continued, ‘I had a fabulous time. I got to hang out with William Holden, who was a wonderful man, and Fred Astaire, who was amazing. I was such a novice and so nervous, but he was just so humble and sweet.

‘I also met my husband on that set, but we didn’t hit it off then. I remembered him when we met again later.’

That chance meeting would prove more significant in later years, with Blakely eventually marrying media expert, public relations consultant and filmmaker Jaffe in 1982.

She had previously been married to lawyer Todd Merer, with the couple divorcing in 1981.

Beyond her breakout TV and disaster film roles, Blakely enjoyed a varied and prolific career in both television and cinema.

She took on leading roles in made-for-TV movies throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Will There Really Be a Morning?, portraying Frances Farmer.

She also appeared in Over the Top, My Mom’s a Werewolf and Hate Crime, while guest-starring on hit series such as This Is Us, NCIS, Murder, She Wrote and Cougar Town.

Oscar Piastri’s Monaco Hurdle: McLaren Struggles Dash Podium Hopes

Oscar Piastri faces the reality of playing a supporting role in Formula One’s most prestigious race, as McLaren encountered challenges in their milestone 1,000th Grand Prix.

Mercedes’ rising star, Antonelli, clinched pole position with a razor-thin margin of just 0.043 seconds on Saturday. He navigated the iconic street circuit with precision, outpacing legendary competitors Max Verstappen, who clocked in at 1 minute 12.094 seconds in his Red Bull, and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who posted a time of 1:12.279.

For McLaren, the weekend has been a sobering return to the drawing board, as they had hoped for a standout performance to mark their historic event.

On a track notorious for its overtaking difficulties, McLaren’s drivers face the likelihood of a challenging and potentially unrewarding race on Sunday. Current Monaco titleholder Lando Norris, with a wry grin, confessed he was already looking forward to the upcoming race in Barcelona next week.

Piastri, who had a close encounter with the wall during the tight second qualifying session, wasn’t taken aback by McLaren’s underwhelming performance, particularly after they lagged more than a second behind their primary competitors in Friday’s practice sessions.

‘It’s been a long time since we’ve been a second off on genuine pace,’ he shrugged.

‘So yesterday was tough. I think we made the car better, and the balance was nicer today, but it was still half-a-second off.

‘While we’ve made some progress since Friday and improved the balance of the car, we’re still lacking the speed.

‘Looking ahead to the race, we have to be realistic. This circuit is notoriously difficult for overtaking, and we don’t expect that to change.’

Antonelli, who’d earlier on Saturday signalled his intentions by finishing quickest in third practice after a disappointing Friday session, will now be a warm favourite for a fifth grand prix triumph in a row on Sunday.

That’s a feat only Verstappen and Hamilton have achieved among current drivers, while the Italian is in a strong position to extend his championship lead of 43 points over teammate Russell.

Verstappen, after a season of moans about F1’s new look, sounded much more chipper, noting of his drive that’s got him on the front row: ‘Once you get on top of it and get a clean lap out of it, especially in qualifying you’re flat-out and on the limit, it’s very rewarding when it goes well.’

Ferrari will be disappointed to have missed what felt like a golden opportunity, with Hamilton third and local hero Charles Leclerc fourth in 1:12.351, although the Monegasque’s car needed some repairs after he clipped a barrier on his final run.

Hamilton, whose girlfriend Kim Kardashian made her first appearance in the F1 paddock on Saturday to add more glamour to the glitzy Monaco circus, still felt he was in line to complete the ‘impossible’ dream by earning his maiden Ferrari victory and the 106th win of his career.

‘I probably need rain, but nothing’s impossible,’ he shrugged. ‘I’ll try to get in there and hassle these two (Antonelli and Verstappen) as much as I can and force them into not making certain corners.’

Antonelli saved his inspired best for last to ensure Mercedes have taken pole for every grand prix this season, and the young championship leader couldn’t stop beaming.

‘It was one of those laps that we call a magic lap. I was able to put it all together,’ he smiled, having put on a particularly notable display considering teammate and title rival George Russell could only finish sixth.

While Verstappen was buoyed by his Red Bull’s performance, his teammate Isack Hadjar backed him up by finishing fifth quickest.
