DC Media’s ‘Nerd Prom’ Rescheduled After Initial Event Disrupted by Attempted Trump Assassination

0

The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) announced on Tuesday that their annual dinner has been rescheduled for this summer. Originally set for April 25, the event was abruptly canceled due to a disruptive incident involving an armed individual with intentions to harm President Trump. The president, attending the “nerd prom” for the first time since taking office, was accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and several Cabinet members along with their spouses.

Weijia Jiang, WHCA president and a White House correspondent for CBS News, revealed that the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner will take place on July 24. She noted that the incident at the initial dinner had become part of history but emphasized the Association’s determination to proceed with the event. Jiang shared on X that holding the dinner is particularly significant as the nation marks the 250th anniversary of its founding.

WHCA president Weijia Jiang, who is also a White House correspondent for CBS News, confirmed that the second go ’round for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner would be held July 24, noting that the “first dinner” was now part of history. So, she wrote on X, would be WHCD’s response, which was to carry on with the event, something that was especially important during the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding.

Jiang wrote in a Tuesday email to her colleagues in the correspondents association, “When gunfire interrupted this year’s event, it further clarified the WHCA’s mission to advocate for the freedoms that are protected in the First Amendment. We will not allow an act of violence to have the last word, especially during a year when we are reflecting on the 250th anniversary of America and everything we stand for.”

California Resident Arrested in Alleged $500K Gold Scam Targeting Gainesville Woman

By Staff Correspondent

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a coordinated effort involving the Gainesville Police Department, the FBI, and the IRS, authorities have arrested Gurpinder Singh, a 20-year-old from French Camp, California. Singh is accused of participating in a scheme to defraud an elderly woman of nearly $500,000 in gold. The apprehension was supported by deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.

On May 22, a detective from the Gainesville Police Department was alerted by FBI and IRS agents about a senior citizen who had fallen victim to a sophisticated scam. The woman reported that she had received an email, seemingly from Amazon, regarding an issue with her Campus USA account. Concerned, she called the number provided in the email and spoke to someone identifying himself as “John Harris,” who falsely informed her that her identity had been stolen and her Social Security number was compromised. He then connected her to another individual, “Michael Chappel,” who spoke with a pronounced Hindi accent and claimed to be a Federal Trade Commission agent. “Michael” instructed her to withdraw funds from her credit union account to purchase gold bars.

Following these instructions, the victim spent $101,220 on gold at a local coin and jewelry shop. She was then directed by “Michael” to package the gold with an “FTC ID number” and send him the purchase receipt. She was told that a representative from the Treasury Department would collect the gold at a gas station in Orange Lake, where she handed over the gold on May 16.

The scam did not end there. When FBI and IRS agents reached out to the victim, she was in the process of being defrauded again by the same perpetrators. They had pressured her to pay an additional $400,000 in gold to safeguard her funds and obtain a new Social Security number.

The agents and the GPD detective helped the victim send photos of $497,229 in gold bars to “Michael,” and “Michael” told the victim to give the gold to a “Treasury agent” in Gainesville.

The pickup was scheduled for noon on June 1 at a bank on SW Archer Road, and while the victim waited in her vehicle for further instructions from “Michael,” multiple undercover FBI and ASO units waited nearby. Two agents in a nearby parking lot noticed a black Kia parked next to them with an Indian male driver who was watching the victim’s vehicle. The agents noticed that the man was constantly on the phone, and they knew from training and experience that couriers are typically on the phone with their handlers during the transaction.

After some time, the victim was told to go to a gas station near SW Archer Road and SW 122nd Street, and the agents followed the black Kia as it followed the victim’s vehicle to the gas station.

At the gas station, the Indian male went inside the store but did not buy anything; he then moved the Kia next to the victim’s vehicle and, still on his phone, he walked past her vehicle toward a food truck but did not order anything.

Meanwhile, the agents were monitoring the victim’s phone conversations with “Michael,” and “Michael” asked the victim why she had two phones; after that, the Indian male walked back to his vehicle, where he was detained.

The Indian male, identified by his Indian passport and California driver’s license as Singh, reportedly said he had recently flown in from California. The vehicle was reportedly rented in Pensacola.

Post Miranda, Singh reportedly said this was his first pickup and then declined to answer any further questions.

A search warrant is being sought for Singh’s phone, which may lead to further charges.

Singh has been charged with grand theft over $100,000. He has no known criminal history, and Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $200,000; however, he has an ICE hold and will not be released on bail. Judge Miller-Jones ordered that if he is released, he must surrender his passport within 24 hours of release.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law

Unveiled: Secretive Drug-Smuggling Tunnel Linking U.S. and Mexico Discovered in Shocking Video

0

Authorities have arrested four individuals accused of smuggling over $45 million worth of cocaine via a sophisticated 2,000-foot tunnel linking border cities in Mexico and California. This tunnel featured electricity, reinforced walls, ventilation, and a rail system, as reported by federal officials.

The discovery of this elaborate tunnel came as a result of a lengthy investigation into a warehouse posing as a discount store, Buy 4 Less, situated near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in San Diego, directly across from Tijuana, Mexico, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

At the conclusion of the operation, officials uncovered over a ton of cocaine along with the advanced tunnel beneath the store.

“For these defendants, it wasn’t a light at the end of the tunnel. It was lights and sirens,” stated U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon in an official release.

The U.S. Homeland Security Investigations Tunnel Task Force began monitoring the so-called Buy 4 Less store in December 2025 after observing a new group of seemingly employees frequenting the location, federal officials noted.

The U.S. Homeland Security Investigations Tunnel Task Force began surveilling the purported Buy 4 Less store in December 2025 when, federal officials said, a new group of apparent employees was seen in and around the store.

Federal officials keeping an eye on the store noted, “During the surveillance, the activity around the Buy 4 Less location did not appear to be consistent with a normal retail location. For example, investigators observed minimal foot traffic from customers coming in and out of the Buy 4 Less store.”

The employees were allegedly seen taking apparently empty suitcases — based on how they were handled, according to the Department of Justice — across the border into Tijuana by car and sometimes even by hand.

However, federal agents didn’t move in on the location until May 29, when they allegedly spotted “large, heavy items” being placed into a white van at the store. The truck left the location and was parked on a street a short distance away, officials said.

A man on a bicycle was then allegedly observed riding up to the van, taking a key out of a secret spot near the gas cap, and driving the van back-to-back with another van, officials said. A large truck also drove up to the vans and deep freezers loaded with packages were transferred between the vehicles, according to the Justice Department.

San Diego County sheriff’s deputies then moved in and busted the operation, according to the DOJ. At the same time, agents allegedly watched another truck being loaded with packages at the Buy 4 Less store, officials said. That truck was also pulled over by authorities shortly after leaving the parking lot.

In the end, federal officials said more than 2,269 pounds of cocaine were found between three vehicles that were pulled over.

The DOJ was granted a warrant to investigate the Buy 4 Less store, upon which they found the exit of the tunnel concealed under the floor of a storage room in the building, officials said. The tunnel was as much as 55 feet deep and extended just over 1,000 feet to the U.S.-Mexico border. It continued on the Mexico side of the border for another more than 800 feet, the DOJ said.

Gregorio Epifanio Hernandez Lopez, 29, from San Diego; Jose Jimenez, 32, from San Diego; Antonio Cortez, 18, of Mexico; and Brandon Escalante Sandoval, 26, of Mexico, were arrested and charged with distribution of a controlled substance. Hernandez Lopez is also facing charges of constructing, financing, or using unauthorized tunnels and importation of a controlled substance. All four men face a maximum of life in prison if convicted.

“This investigation and seizure represent a significant blow to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel,” Kevin Murphy, acting special agent in charge for HSI San Diego, said in a statement. “The discovery and dismantlement of this sophisticated cross-border tunnel, along with the seizure of more than a ton of cocaine, underscore the commitment and collaboration of Homeland Security Investigations and our Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) partners.”

Dr. Oz Sidesteps Questions in White House Briefing Room Appearance

WASHINGTON – Speaking at a brisk pace, Dr. Mehmet Oz highlighted the Trump administration’s initiatives to reduce prescription drug costs, fight health care fraud, and prevent the spread of Ebola abroad.

However, when journalists sought answers to the day’s most urgent topics during the White House briefing, Dr. Oz, representing the administration, repeatedly found himself with little to contribute, acknowledging this fact multiple times.

Oz’s briefing underscored the challenges the White House faces in addressing significant breaking news, revealing a vulnerability as public opinion increasingly shifts away from the president. This occurs amid President Donald Trump’s increased avoidance of direct media engagement.

When questioned about President Trump’s decision to appoint Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence, despite his lack of national security experience, Oz expressed confidence in the president’s decisions, adding, “I think Bill’s a great guy. I know him socially.”

When pressed further on the matter, he responded, “Ma’am, you’re asking me a question that’s out of my lane.”

When a reporter said that the White House had given so little information on Pulte’s nomination that there was no choice but to seek answers from Oz during the briefing — despite it not being his area of expertise — Oz acknowledged, “I appreciate you want an answer. I’m not not going to be the one giving it to you.”

Still another attempt finally prompted him to exclaim, “I don’t know anything more about Bill Pulte than you do. I did not think that the questions would even come up here. I hadn’t even heard the news when I walked out.”

The administration has invited some of its most camera-ready voices to brief reporters while White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is on maternity leave. It started with Vice President JD Vance and then featured another possible 2028 White House hopeful, Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had his turn.

“I did watch them all, by the way,” Oz said, explaining it helped him prepare for the experience. “I’m a doctor. I try and do my homework. I prepped for the case.”

Vance, Rubio and Bessent each fielded questions about the war in Iran and other topics. But Oz, an unsuccessful former Senate candidate in Pennsylvania and onetime prominent TV physician, stuck mostly to health care.

The White House said Oz was there to announce that 160 new medications are being added to the government’s discounted-drug website TrumpRx, bringing the total number of drugs on the site to more than 750.

“Dr. Oz authoritatively and articulately discussed the latest updates on several key Trump administration priorities, from lowering prescription drug prices to rooting out pervasive fraud in federal programs,” White House spokesman Kush Desai, said in a statement that also chided reporters for asking about “topics that President Trump himself has already weighed in on.”

Oz was also asked several times about Trump having undergone four publicly disclosed health screenings since returning to the White House and gave various answers, including, “I think he likes the results,” while piling on the praise about his boss, who turns 80 this month.

“That amount of energy, and that amount of mental acuity does not exist in a vacuum,” Oz said. “You have to have a vessel to carry it.”

Harvard Scientist Suggests Methane Emission from Interstellar Object 3I/ATLAS May Indicate Extraterrestrial Life

0

Although 3I/ATLAS is on its way out of our solar system, it continues to captivate Avi Loeb.

In a recent blog entry, the Harvard astrophysicist highlighted that the comet released an unexpectedly high amount of methane while traversing our galaxy. This observation led him to speculate whether this interstellar traveler might be seeding the universe with life.

“Could the methane released by 3I/ATLAS near the sun be a result of living processes?” wondered Loeb, who has previously proposed ideas about the comet’s origins.

The James Webb Space Telescope detected this significant methane release in December, Loeb noted.

He found the situation intriguing, as the outgassing was only observed when the comet passed close to the sun, causing its icy surface to sublimate and release gases.

He deemed this significant as methane is an important “biosignature” that, according to a recent study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), could be the “first detectable indication of life beyond Earth.”

Loeb theorized that the material shed by ATLAS’ sunward jet (anti-tail) — another sign of its possible extraterrestrial origins, per Loeb — could have “carried extrasolar life on dust or ice fragments towards habitable planets within the solar system.”

He compared this form of cosmic conception, dubbed panspermia, to a dandelion scattering its seeds to the wind.

Loeb speculated that said lifeforms could’ve lain dormant in the intergalactic iceberg, much like microbes hibernating in the permafrost for thousands of years.

When the sun thawed their delivery vehicle, this unleashed them into the cosmos like an interstellar Johnny Appleseed.

Unlike with your garden variety seed pod, however, this might not have been a random dispersal, but rather a targeted insemination.

“There is the possibility of directed panspermia, whereby an interstellar gardener seeded 3I/ATLAS on a fertilization mission targeting the habitable planets in the solar system,” Loeb theorized.

According to the scientists, this would explain other ATLAS anomalies discussed by Loeb, including the unique alignment between the solar system’s habitable planets and the comet’s trajectory.

“Whether the seeds of extrasolar life reach a fertile ground in the solar system remains to be seen,” said the scientist, who hopes we can discover more of these cosmic cryogenic pods in the future.

He said that should these interstellar icebergs be oriented similarly to ATLAS, then his hypothesis “will gain a higher likelihood.” Loeb said that our space agencies could confirm the existence of these space hitchhikers by intercepting and diagnosing their composition with a probe.

Doing so could perhaps shed light on the origins of life on our own planet, he claimed.

“In case it does [harbor life], the most pressing question is whether extrasolar life resembles life-as-we-know-it,” he said. “If so, perhaps life on Earth was seeded by an interstellar gardener.”

Dr. Oz Proposes Major Medicaid Reform: Targets $2B Spending on Illegal Immigrants and Implements Work Requirements for Able-Bodied Recipients

0

The Trump administration has set its sights on eliminating government waste and misuse, with a focus on the substantial federal tax dollars allocated to healthcare for undocumented immigrants. In addition, the administration is instituting new work requirements for Medicaid recipients who are deemed able-bodied.

In a press briefing held at the White House on Tuesday, Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), unveiled a robust plan designed to curb what he referred to as “legalized money laundering.” He warned that, without intervention, this issue could potentially inflate the program’s costs by an additional $5.4 trillion over the next ten years.

Dr. Oz highlighted that the administration has identified approximately $2 billion in federal tax funds that have been improperly allocated to undocumented immigrants. This figure has seen a significant increase, doubling since he last addressed the issue a year ago.

Dr. Mehmet Oz at White House news conference

During the conference, which took place in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, D.C., Dr. Oz specifically called out California. He reported that CMS has informed the state of its obligation to repay $2 billion to the federal government, noting that half of this amount has already been successfully recovered.

He specifically took aim at California, noting CMS told the state it owes the federal government $2 billion — half of which has already been successfully recouped.

“Just to put it in context, in California, if you’re on Medi-Cal, the Medicaid program in California, until this administration, you got full dental and full vision benefits,” Oz said. “Now, I’m for those benefits, I like them, but we don’t give that to Medicare patients. So we should at least be equitable, and all of us together should decide what we are going to do as a nation.”

“The people who pay that bill, when … the largesse of California allows folks to get benefits that the rest of the country doesn’t think is appropriate for illegal immigrants …, is paid by folks who are taxpayers in New Mexico — which is a blue state — and Mississippi, a red state,” he continued.

In tandem with cutting funds for illegal immigrants, the administration is overhauling Medicaid by instituting work requirements.

The new rule will mandate that able-bodied recipients must work for 20 hours a week, volunteer or get an education in order to receive free healthcare coverage.

“If you’re sitting at home, which is true for the millions of people who are able-bodied on Medicaid, on average, you’re spending 6.1 hours watching television just hanging around,” Oz said.

He framed the new requirements as a “path to prosperity,” claiming they return Medicaid to its original 1965 intent.

Oz argued that anyone receiving value from the American people should have an obligation to participate in society if they are physically able.

“If you can work, you should get up and work,” Oz said. “… If we put guardrails around these programs, we’ll allow them to thrive. I’m here because I love Medicaid. The president has already said he loves and cherishes Medicaid and Medicare. … We cannot allow these programs to be defrauded into a turmoil that they cannot pull up from. If we love these programs, we will make the difficult decisions.”

Shocking Crime: Man Brutally Attacks Mother of His Children Over 60 Times with Awl

Inset left: Edward A. Millan-Volcan (Sedgwick County). Inset right: Sinay Leon-Montoya (Obituary). Background: The apartment complex where Millan-Volcan killed Leon-Montoya in Wichita, Kan. (Google Maps).

A Kansas man has been sentenced to several decades in prison for the brutal murder of a woman in front of their two children last summer.

Edward A. Millan-Volcan, 26, admitted guilt last week to one count of first-degree felony murder for the fatal stabbing of 27-year-old Sinay Leon-Montoya on July 17, 2025. The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office shared this development in a press release.

Millan-Volcan also entered a guilty plea for one count of attempted murder related to an assault on Germany Torres Figueroa, 26, that took place on the same day.

The tragic incident partly stemmed from a breakdown in communication. Leon-Montoya had dialed 911 just minutes before her murder, but unfortunately, that call did not prevent the tragedy, according to police.

At 2:17 p.m. on the day of the incident, Leon-Montoya contacted emergency services from the 6300 block of West Kellogg Drive in Wichita to report a domestic disturbance, as noted by the police department at the time.

“A language barrier made communication with dispatchers difficult,” a press release from last year reads. “She then left that location and returned to the apartment, where the fatal stabbing occurred.”

By 2:34 p.m., police would be called again. By then it was too late.

In those intermediate 17 minutes, Leon-Montoya traveled roughly 3 miles north to an apartment on the 6800 block of West Par Lane.

Police arrived to find two victims.

“They found a woman outside with injuries consistent with a stab or cut wound,” the original press release goes on. “She was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.”

Inside, Leon-Montoya was suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The defendant was also found inside and arrested without incident.

Millan-Volcan had stabbed the victim more than 60 times in the apartment they shared. But the violence began earlier that day.

In the earlier 911 call, the woman said Millan-Volcan had been hitting and choking her, as well as threatening to kill her and her children, according to an affidavit obtained by The Wichita Eagle.

Before police could respond to that location, however, she told the dispatcher she had to go back to the apartment “due to something happening to one of her children,” the charging document says.

Some press accounts have referred to Millan-Volcan as the victim’s estranged husband. The woman, for her part, was in the process of trying to end the relationship when she died, police said.

Upon her return to the apartment, Millan-Volcan forced Leon-Montoya, her children and Figueroa into a bedroom where he stabbed both women. Investigators found the slain woman on the bedroom floor, lying next to a three-inch long scratch awl.

“Investigators learned Montoya and the suspect have young children who were present during the incident,” police said at the time.

The medical examiner found more than 60 puncture wounds to the victim’s chest, neck, arms, back and head — including 21 wounds that penetrated her heart and lungs, authorities said.

Figueroa, a friend of Leon-Montoya’s, attempted to stop the murder but was injured herself — to a lesser degree — when she intervened.

Millan-Volcan was initially charged with two counts each of kidnapping, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated child endangerment. Those charges were dismissed under his plea deal.

The defendant is slated to be sentenced on July 16. He faces a minimum sentence of 38 3/4 years in prison, prosecutors said.

King and Princess of Wales Express Gratitude to UK’s Cancer Battle Trailblazers

0

The King and the Princess of Wales extended personal gratitude to the leaders in the fight against cancer during an evening event at St James’s Palace.

King Charles, aged 77, and Princess Catherine, 44, who both have faced the challenge of a cancer diagnosis, were accompanied by Queen Camilla and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester at a reception celebrating the 125th anniversary of Cancer Research UK.

Both the King and the Princess received their diagnoses within a few weeks of each other in 2024.

While King Charles continues with a confidential treatment plan, Catherine shared that she completed a round of chemotherapy by late summer of that year.

In January 2025, Catherine joyfully announced her remission but acknowledged the significant physical impact of her treatment, noting that her return to public engagements will be gradual and carefully paced.

During the reception the royals met researchers, clinicians, volunteers and partners involved in Cancer Research UK’s prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

High profile supporters of the charity including fellow cancer survivors Davina McCall, Hannah Fry and Adele Roberts were in attendance, as well as singer Ronan Keating, who lost his mother to cancer, and his wife, Storm.

The reception included immersive installations showcasing the work of the charity, including the charity’s past impact, current work and future innovation.

At one point during the busy reception, Queen Camilla walked over and hugged the Princess of Wales.

The King and Queen later viewed visual representations of how technological innovation is transforming cancer research, including using AI to spot signs of the disease.

The reception was held held to launch Cancer Research UK’s 125th anniversary year, its work stretching back to the founding of the charity’s predecessor organisations (The Imperial Cancer Research Fund and the Cancer Research Campaign, founded in 1902 and 1923 respectively).

Since then, the charity has helped to transform how cancer is understood, prevented, detected and treated.

This progress has contributed to a doubling of cancer survival in the UK over the past 50 years and today 8 in 10 people who receive cancer drugs in the UK receive a drug developed by or with Cancer Research UK.

The King has been Patron of Cancer Research UK since 2024. His Majesty’s patronage was announced to coincide with a visit to University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre to highlight some of the innovative research supported by Cancer Research UK.

The Duke of Gloucester and Princess Alexandra are joint presidents of the charity.

Kate wore a £1,600 midi dress by Rodarte with a detachable flower charm.

She also spoke to the widow of ‘bowel babe’ Dame Deborah James, who was honoured by Prince William for her incredible fundraising and campaigning in the face of incurable bowel cancer.

Dame Deborah received her insignia from the future king in May 2022 in a special ceremony at her parent’s home and died just weeks later.

Her husband Sebastian Bowen told the Princess: ‘I’ve been thinking about you guys a lot’.

Catherine praised Deborah for the ‘impact of her work’ and listened intently as Mr Bowen told her how it had been ‘bittersweet’ to smash fundraising targets for research and clinical trials into the disease that his wife had dreamed of achieving.

He also appeared to thank William for a sympathetic conversation he apparently had with the couple’s two children.

The princess replied: ‘He’s good like that.’

Mr Bowen said afterwards: ‘I told her I was incredibly touched that they as a family had been so supportive and thought about them all the time.

‘It was deeply touching and moving for me and my family to have had the opportunity to meet them and ongoing support and given to the fund both privately and publicly.’

Dame Deborah’s father Alistair James also spoke to the royals.

After chatting to Camilla he said: ‘She congratulated everything we had achieved with the fund.’

He also met the Princess and said afterwards: ‘It is the first time I’ve met Catherine she was genuine and warm. I’ve met William and I have a lot of respect for both of them.’

Meanwhile TV presenter Davina McCall said her exchange with the Princess of Wales at the Cancer Research UK reception was ‘really wonderful’.

Ms McCall was introduced to the princess by Dr Ian Walker, executive director of policy, information and communications at the charity, on Tuesday evening.

Ms McCall said: ‘It was a really wonderful exchange, and they (the King, Queen and princess) are all wonderful.

‘I can’t imagine what it must be like having going through something like cancer, and then sort of having to tell people about it, when possibly it would have been much easier and nicer to not have to share it with the world.

‘And I’ve got to say, after my brain tumour, I didn’t massively want to have to do that myself.’

She later added: ‘But it really helped me get through it by sharing it, and other people relating, or feeling like I could help.’

Ms McCall underwent surgery in 2024 to remove a benign brain tumour.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in October last year and had surgery to remove a lump but said in April that she had now received the ‘all clear’.

After Charles asked her about her cancer, Davina was heard saying ‘I’m so grateful’ and told him ‘anything is possible’.

She also chatted at length to Kate and on meeting the Princess said ‘it’s such an honour’.

Ms McCall said: ‘It was a great honour to meet the Princess of Wales, I’m an enormous fan of everything she does and stands for, and for her role in speaking out about her journey and how hard that is. She is very brave.’

Hannah Fry, who appeared on Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer last year when King revealed in a landmark statement that his treatment was being reduced, also chatted to Charles at length.

The scientist and broadcaster had the all clear after being diagnosed with cervical cancer.

She said afterwards: ‘We spoke about Stand Up To Cancer which I did last year and what a massive difference that made.

‘To hear somebody like him who has been through it and survived cancer has same experience as so many people across the county for him to give words of encouragement to take part in screening programme is massive.

‘On a simple personal level I think there is something really profound about a family who are at the top of society going through same the rest of us, something very humanising and being willing to talk to people on their level makes a big difference.’

DJ and broadcaster Adele Roberts, diagnosed with stage 2 bowel cancer and now cancer-free, also attended.

Dominating the Pitch: How Lyndon Dykes Secured His Starting Spot for Scotland vs. Haiti

In the rugged terrains of Queensland, resilience is second nature, yet Lyndon Dykes will likely carry a lingering sense of misfortune from a fateful incident that occurred two years ago. The footballer faced a harsh setback when an unfortunate twist of fate struck him during a practice match at Lesser Hampden, in preparation for Euro 2024.

While contesting for the ball, Dykes suffered a severe ankle injury, immediately sensing the gravity of the situation. Subsequent medical scans confirmed his worst fear: torn ankle ligaments, effectively ruling him out of participating in Germany.

It wasn’t until mid-August that Dykes was back on the pitch with Queens Park Rangers, after a lengthy recovery. He later secured a two-year contract with Birmingham before being loaned to a struggling Charlton team this January.

In the aftermath of missing the European Championship, Dykes managed to score four goals in his comeback year and added five more in the recently concluded season. Meanwhile, as the World Cup squad was announced, Oli McBurnie’s impressive tally of 19 goals for Hull City during the 2025-26 season has often been highlighted.

He scored four goals in his first year after missing the Euros and five in the season just ended. As has often been pointed out since the World Cup squad was announced, Oli McBurnie managed to find the net 19 times for Hull City in 2025-26.

Lyndon Dykes strengthened his case to start for Scotland in the friendly win over Curacao

Lyndon Dykes strengthened his case to start for Scotland in the friendly win over Curacao

Dykes is going to the World Cup. McBurnie isn’t. You can understand why that situation has caused a bit of disquiet. Purely in terms of goals — a striker’s currency — Steve Clarke’s preference for Dykes over McBurnie makes little sense.

As half-time approached on Saturday, with Scotland labouring badly against Curacao, even the biggest advocate of Clarke would have questioned the wisdom of the decision.

Lawrence Shankland just couldn’t get into the game. George Hirst, his strike partner in an enterprising 4-4-2, struggled to keep a hold of the ball.

Even though Jurgen Locadia was sent off for a ridiculous elbow on Aaron Hickey and Findlay Curtis, the replacement for the unfortunate Gilmour, scored a fine equaliser, Scotland were huffing and puffing. The great Hampden farewell was threatening to turn into a miserable occasion.

Scotland played with far more urgency in the second period. Curtis was a threat whenever he got the ball. He invariably made good decisions on when to take on his man and when to recycle the ball.

Tyler Fletcher, who was only meant to be training with the squad this week, looked completely at ease on the international stage, his range of passing and dig suggesting he can emulate his father Darren in having a long and distinguished career.

But no alteration to the line-up was more pivotal than that of Dykes. He didn’t score but he secured possession and brought his side up the park, ensuring that Curaçao’s 10-men had no respite. His pass to allow Shankland to claim his second and Scotland’s third was superb.

Those who point to his modest goals tally since his Euros heartache and claim there’s been an element of sympathy in the manager selecting him don’t know football and don’t know Clarke. A forward doesn’t necessarily have to score goals to justify their selection provided others are finding the back of the net.

Thankfully, in Shankland, Clarke has a striker who he can depend on to do just that. Five minutes before firing in off the post from Dykes’ lay-off, he effortlessly flashed Ryan Christie’s cross home.

This time around, there’s no debate to be had; Fresh from signing for Rangers, Shankland starts against Haiti.

Whichever formation the manager deploys, you’d expect him to have a partner in a game Scotland would like to win well but certainly must win.

Ross Stewart and Che Adams both joined the squad too late to be involved on Saturday and you’d expect they’ll get a chance to show what they can do against Bolivia in New Jersey.

They’ll need to perform to their optimum levels to stand a chance of staying in the team, though. If you’d a spare tenner right now, you’d stick it on Dykes and Shankland walking out for the opener in Boston.

This game was always more than a chance for the supporters – all 44,433 of them – to wish the side well before departing for the first World Cup since 1998.

Notwithstanding that Scott McTominay, John McGinn, Lewis Ferguson and Kieran Tierney were also unavailable, Clarke will be the wiser for it.

Truthfully, Craig Gordon didn’t have a great deal to do, but there were no red flags in the display of a 43-year-old who hadn’t played with Hearts since January 25.

Liam Kelly, seen as the third-choice keeper, made a couple of fine stops after replacing the veteran. Unless Angus Gunn – one appearance for Nottingham Forest this season – knows something we don’t, Gordon looks set to start out in the USA.

While Aaron Hickey and Andy Robertson represent quality in the full-back roles, it’s hardly breaking news that central defence is a concern.

Neither Scott McKenna nor John Souttar looked too clever as Tahith Chong outsmarted and outpaced them for Curaçao’s opener. If Scotland set-up with such an attacking formation against Haiti, as you suspect they will, it goes without saying that they cannot be ripped apart with a simple counterattack as they were in that instance.

The side was more assured when Grant Hanley came on for Souttar and Dom Hyam replaced McKenna. Jack Hendry will surely feature against Bolivia.

We know Clarke trusts Hanley implicitly. If the veteran, who can play left or right, is to be given the nod, it’s up to one of the other contenders to put down a marker on Saturday in New Jersey.

Ben Gannon-Doak had a difficult afternoon. The Bournemouth winger’s pace is extraordinary. Too often, though, he arrived in promising positions and lacked the guile and subtlety to make it count.

His lack of composure contrasted sharply with that of Fletcher, the man who replaced him. If you didn’t know better, you’d say the teenager was winning his 20th cap, not his first.

On his 57th appearance, Kenny McLean scarcely put a foot wrong. It was rare to see the Norwich man complete 90 minutes.

With Gilmour now sadly out of the running, McLean’s ability to keep the ball under pressure becomes even more valuable.

There’s a possibility that McLean and Ryan Christie might be the two holding midfielders for at least part of the games against Morocco and Brazil, which, presumably, will see Clarke revert to one striker.

Christie was among the side’s best performers again in a more advanced role, his efforts rewarded with a penalty conversion.

Findlay, the player who won it for cleverly drawing a foul from Jurien Gaari, could scarcely have done more to make a case to his manager.

From a fringe player with Rangers to a hero of Kilmarnock’s successful survival operation and now on the flight to the World Cup. Who says dreams can’t come true?

A first home friendly win in 10 years and just a fourth victory in 16 matches for Clarke in non-competitive matches was eventually deserved and was a welcome fillip as squad prepared to back its bags for the flight to the first training camp in Florida. The fervent hope, as ever, is that they don’t come home too soon.

Donald Trump Praises Missing Congressman Tom Kean Jr. for Tireless Efforts Amidst Search Concerns

Former President Donald Trump has expressed his support for Congressman Tom Kean Jr., who has been out of the public eye for the past three months.

In a message shared on Truth Social on Monday, June 2, Trump, 79, praised Kean as a “Great Representative for the People of New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District.” He went on to describe Kean as a “Tremendous Advocate” for the America First Agenda.

Trump highlighted Kean’s commitment to securing the border, preventing migrant crime, boosting the economy, lowering taxes and regulations, supporting small businesses, promoting American energy independence, backing the military and veterans, and defending the Second Amendment.

Furthermore, Trump, 79, affirmed his “complete and total endorsement” of Kean, 57, urging New Jersey residents to support the congressman at the polls on Election Day, June 2. Kean is currently running unopposed in the Republican primary and will face the Democratic primary winner in the November general election.

In a separate political endorsement, Trump also backed Spencer Pratt in the Los Angeles mayoral race. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, May 20, Trump remarked, “I’d like to see him do well. He’s a character,” adding that he assumes Pratt probably supports him, as indicated in a video circulated on social media.

“GET OUT AND VOTE FOR TOM — HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” the president concluded.

Kean reshared Trump’s message of support via X writing, “Thank you for your support, President Trump! Primary Election Day is tomorrow – get out and vote! 🇺🇸.”

Trump’s endorsement for Kean comes after the congressman made headlines for his lack of public appearances and a slew of missing votes. Kean cast his last vote on March 5. One month later, Kean claimed via social media that he has been MIA because he is dealing with a “personal medical issue.”

“My doctors continue to assure me that my recovery will be complete and that I will be back to the job I love very soon,” Kean wrote via X in late April. “I expect to return to a full schedule and be at 100 percent.”

Kean also addressed that he had missed multiple votes that occurred during those two months.

“I take my responsibilities seriously and have a strong record of showing up and delivering, which makes this absence all the more difficult,” he continued. “I am especially proud of my Congressional team, who have kept constituent services and legislative work moving forward without interruption, and my political team for ensuring the campaign continues to run strong.”

The newly-minted graduate then picked up the phone while […]

Since that statement, Kean has not been present in person on Capitol Hill and has missed more than 100 votes.

Last month, Kean provided an update on his return via a telephone interview with the New Jersey Globe.

“My doctors are confident that I’m on the road to a full recovery,” he told the outlet. “I understand the need for public transparency, and I appreciate the support of my constituents.”
