Rediscovering ‘Troy’: Why Brad Pitt’s Epic Deserves a Second Look Before Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey

0

For many years, the 2004 film Troy seemed to fit the mold of what film critic Nathan Rabin, a contributor to Decider, describes as a “forgotbuster.” This term refers to movies that perform well at the box office but fail to leave a lasting cultural impact. During the thriving summer box office periods over the past few decades, particularly before the pandemic disrupted the industry, numerous films fell into this category. With an abundance of movies grossing $100 million or more in North America each summer, not all could attain the enduring popularity of a Christopher Nolan film.

Interestingly, the buzz surrounding Nolan’s projects can sometimes resurrect interest in these “forgotbusters.” This is the case with Troy, a historical epic that ranked as the sixth highest-grossing film of summer 2004. The renewed interest is due to Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, slated for a July release. Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy, a streamlined version of Homer’s The Iliad, was the last major Homer-inspired film to secure a high-profile summer release.

Back in 2004, Troy held several noteworthy distinctions. It was a significant box office triumph, largely driven by Brad Pitt’s star power. While the cast included other well-known actors such as Eric Bana, Brian Cox, Diane Kruger, Orlando Bloom, Rose Byrne, Peter O’Toole, and Julie Christie, the film was primarily marketed around Pitt, who was then at the peak of his career, a decade after his breakout year in 1994. Troy became his highest-grossing film globally at the time, only later surpassed by titles like F1 and World War Z. Additionally, the film accomplished the rare feat of outperforming the much-anticipated first-weekend-of-May release, a trend observed when Hugh Jackman’s movies like Van Helsing in 2004 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009 did not meet expectations. Alongside 300, Troy was one of the most successful sword-and-sandal epics following the triumph of Gladiator, though it didn’t match the latter in financial, critical, or award success.

However, 300, with its exaggerated comic-book style and hyper-masculine energy, inspired a series of fantastical historical action movies such as Immortals and Gods of Egypt. Troy, on the other hand, did not spark a similar trend, despite the release of a more extended and explicit director’s cut. Moreover, while movie quotes can often be overemphasized, it’s notable that lines from 300 are far more frequently quoted than Pitt’s Achilles shouting, “Immortality! Take it! It’s yours!”

Fifteen years later, Brad Pitt has achieved a form of cinematic immortality, though he has expressed mixed feelings about his role in Troy. He shared these sentiments in a comprehensive interview with New York Times Magazine, reflecting on his career and the impact of his work in the film.

“I had to do Troy because I pulled out of another movie and then had to do something for the studio. It wasn’t painful, but I realized that the way that movie was being told was not how I wanted it to be. I made my own mistakes in it… I could not get out of the middle of the frame. It was driving me crazy. I’d become spoiled working with David Fincher. It’s no slight on Wolfgang Petersen. But somewhere in it, Troy became a commercial kind of thing. Every shot was like, Here’s the hero! There was no mystery. So about that time I made a decision that I was only going to invest in quality stories, for lack of a better term. It was a distinct shift that led to the next decade of films.”

Makes you wonder what he thought of the “mystery” in his largely uncomplicated F1 best-of-the-best character. But that middle-of-the-frame quality also speaks to the appeal of Troy. As much as it de-mystifies the Homer text – this version has no participation from the gods, who are mentioned only as unseen abstractions, not actual characters – it adheres to other, more Hollywood traditions of the lavish mega-production: Lots of stars, sets, locations, costumes, and old-fashioned craft. There’s also plenty of digital trickery, too, of course; Troy is one of those cusp-y movies that seemed pretty effects-saturated at the time but now, having been shot on location using celluloid, has baseline levels of grain and gravity that make it look like a “real” movie.

Maybe that’s why it’s being held up as a kind of platonic ideal of the movie Nolan is trying to make – even though Nolan is hardly overinvested in contemporary digital trickery. (The Odyssey is one of the summer’s few films to be shot entirely on celluloid – in fact, it’s the first Hollywood feature ever made entirely with IMAX cameras.) Troy has gotten mixed into a weird online debate about the “accuracy” of The Odyssey (which, to be clear, is an adaptation of an epic poem that does include the Greek gods, as well as a cyclops, sirens, and other otherworldly elements) – specifically the alleged casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy (played by Diane Kruger in Troy) and Elliot Page as an underworld-dwelling version of Achilles (Pitt’s character in Troy).

The latter is pure speculation; Page may not be playing Achilles at all, but another character who Odysseus encounters in the underworld. Regardless, some of the online controversy has treated this as a reboot/recast version, as if Achilles has been canonically Pitt for centuries, and to deviate from the world’s most handsome movie star from 22 years ago is akin to maliciously ripping up the original text and scattering it to the wind. (You will not be surprised to learn that this argument has found kinship with those repulsed by the mere idea of a Black woman playing Helen, the face who launched a thousand ships.) Even with the charitable reading of “accuracy” interpreted as fidelity to the source, Troy is not especially “accurate” to The Iliad. Pitt just looks like plenty of people’s idea of a god-kissed warrior. In that sense, it’s one of his most iconic performances, without being especially good. That old interview is right: The decade of Pitt performances that followed, for filmmakers like Andrew Dominik, the Coen Brothers, Terrence Malick, and David Fincher, are a lot more interesting.

The Odyssey may fall closer in line with those later Pitt films than with Troy. Then again, Nolan himself was once in the running to direct Troy back in the day, while director Wolfgang Petersen was set to make a version of a Batman/Superman movie that never happened in that form. Petersen jumped back to Troy, a project he had developed earlier, and Nolan was given the opportunity to make Batman Begins. Meanwhile, future Batman v. Superman director Zack Snyder broke out a few years later with 300. That’s all to say that many filmmakers share an interest in comic book heroes and Greek mythology, which makes sense; they’re all attempting to bring both emotional grounding and visual grandeur to these larger-than-life characters.

In that department, Troy is a modest success, more or less deserving of its also-ran status. It’s not as emotionally stirring or exciting as Gladiator or as visually memorable as something as ridiculous as 300 or Gods of Egypt. Apart from the sheer beauty of its faces and bodies, it’s kind of forgettable, and an odd movie to hold up to The Odyssey at all. That its current streaming home is AMC+, a vestige of an old cable network, feels right: It feels made for an overextended four-and-a-half-hour timeslot on Sunday afternoon cable, a laundry movie from a pre-streaming age. Of course the Nolan version isn’t going to look or feel much like this, nor can it afford to be “only” a Troy-sized hit. There will still be hit movies consigned to semi-obscurity in the movie, but the era of Peak Forgotbuster is over.

Unveiling the Secret: Meet the Little-Known Plant Sending Cats into a Hilarious Frenzy

0

Often dubbed the ‘weed for cats,’ catnip is widely recognized for its ability to excite felines. However, scientists have identified another plant that seems to drive cats into an even greater frenzy.

Research indicates that silver vine, known scientifically as Actinidia polygama, provides cats with an even more intense high.

Both catnip and silver vine feature similar chemical compounds that stimulate the opioid reward systems in cats, resulting in a quick, safe burst of euphoria.

Although catnip has a higher concentration of these active substances, recent studies have revealed a distinct feline preference for silver vine.

While not commonly known in Western countries, silver vine, referred to as matabi in Japan, has been celebrated for centuries for its cat-attracting properties.

In their new study, scientists from Iwate University and Nagoya University in Japan offered cats a choice between the plants.

They found that both free–roaming outdoor cats and purebred indoor cats almost always went for silver vine.

In fact, most cats completely ignored the scientists’ catnip offering whenever silver vine was also available.

As many pet owners will know, when felines encounter catnip, they usually flop to the floor, rolling around and rubbing their faces into the plant.

Catnip contains a chemical called nepetalactone, while silver vine contains a very similar compound called nepetalactol.

Scientists believe that cats have special cells in their airways that react with these chemicals when they are sniffed through the nose.

This triggers the opioid reward systems to start producing endorphins – the cat’s natural happy chemicals.

This doesn’t necessarily make cats ‘high’ in the same way that drugs like cannabis affect humans, but it does put them in a good mood and significantly alter their behaviour.

While these effects are well–documented, scientists haven’t previously studied what happens when cats encounter catnip and silver vine at the same time.

In their first trial, the researchers placed fresh silver vine branches near a live catnip plant in a garden that was frequented by local cats.

Six cats visited the garden over 10 nights, five of which rubbed and rolled on the silver vine, while no cats showed any interest in the catnip.

Does catnip get cats high?

After smelling catnip, most cats will show changes in their behaviour.

Most will roll around, make loud noises, and some may be excited or hyperactive.

This is because active chemicals in catnip activate the cat’s opioid reward systems, which control the natural release of endorphins.

While this makes cats happy, they are not really ‘high’ in the sense we would think about it.

Cats don’t display any slowed reactions, impaired judgement, or experience any altered perceptions.

Likewise, cats can’t get addicted to catnip or suffer withdrawal symptoms if they stop using it.

Scientists think this love for catnip actually evolved because the plant acts as a natural mosquito repellent.

When the researchers repeated the test only using extracts from the two plants, cats still showed a strong preference for the silver vine extracts.

To check that this behaviour wasn’t unique to this small population of Japanese cats, researchers repeated the test with 22 cats from Europe, the US, and the Middle East.

Once again, when catnip and silver vine extracts were offered, 15 cats only responded to the silver vine extract, while only three responded to the catnip.

This is despite the fact that cats would show the normal rubbing and rolling behaviour when given samples of catnip in isolation.

Co–author Dr Reiko Uenoyama, an assistant professor at Iwate University, says: ‘Our study shows that what cats can respond to and what they actually choose are not always the same.

‘Catnip can make cats respond in laboratory tests, but that does not mean cats will choose it in a more natural, free–choice setting.’

What made these results so unexpected was the fact that fresh catnip plants contain 170 times more active compounds than silver vine.

Lead author Professor Masao Miyazaki, of Iwate University, says: ‘At first glance, this was counterintuitive.

‘One might expect a plant containing more active compounds, and compounds that clearly work in laboratory tests, to trigger a stronger behavioural response.’

One possible explanation for this unexpected choice is that fresh catnip is simply too strong for most cats to enjoy.

When they encounter a living plant or potent extract, the odour might overwhelm their sensitive noses and lead them to choose the more mellow scent of silver vine.

Interestingly, this supports an observation from one of the very first accounts of catnip’s attractive powers.

In 1786, over 200 years ago, Philip Miller noted in his book ‘The Gardener’s Dictionary’ that cats tended to prefer catnip when it was ‘withered’ and avoided healthy clumps of the plant.

This could be because slightly dried–up catnip releases fewer active chemicals, making its scent less overpowering.

Professor Miyazaki told the Daily Mail: ‘silvervine can be a useful form of olfactory enrichment for cats, especially for cats that do not respond to catnip. It may encourage play, rubbing, rolling, and exploratory behavior.

‘Based on our research, silvervine appears to be safe when used appropriately as a cat enrichment material.’

Scientists reveal three other plants that have the same effect as catnip

Researchers found three other plants have a similar effect to catnip:

The results of the experiment revealed that 79 per cent of the cats responded positively to silver vine, compared to 68 per cent for catnip

Silver Vine: Actinidia polygama is a deciduous climbing vine grown in the high mountainous regions of eastern Asia. It produces clusters of fragrant, creamy white 1 ½ inch flowers which bloom in the summer and bears a fruit similar to kiwi.

Silver vine has been used for centuries in Asia as a preventative health aid.

It is very popular in Japan and China as a cat stimulant when ground into a powder and has a distinctive sweet tea–like fragrance which attracts cats.

Tatarian honeysuckle: Native to Siberia and other parts of eastern Asia, but it is probably better known in North America, where it is a widespread introduced species and noxious weed.

A bushy shrub, it can grow to three meters in height

It generally has a pair of white to pink crimson red flowers.

Valerian root: A perennial flowering plant, with heads of sweetly scented pink or white flowers that bloom in the summer and can reach a height of 5 feet.

Valerian flower extracts were used as a perfume in the 16th century.

It is also widely used, when crushed, as a herbal remedy .

It’s been used to treat sleep disorders and for conditions connected to anxiety and psychological stress including nervous asthma, hysterical states, hypochondria and headaches.

Memorial Day Gas Prices Surge by $1.38 Compared to Last Year

0

States like Georgia and Indiana, which have done away with their gas taxes, are boasting some of the lowest fuel prices across the nation.

WASHINGTON — As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, the national average price for a gallon of regular gas reached $4.564 on Thursday. This marks a significant increase of $1.38, or 43.4%, compared to the same time last year.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) reports that 39.1 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Memorial Day, May 25.

Despite the rise in gasoline costs, AAA highlighted that early bird flight tickets are actually cheaper than they were last year. Approximately 3.66 million travelers are anticipated to fly during the Memorial Day weekend.

Even with the increased gas prices, the desire to travel remains strong. AAA predicts an additional 100,000 road trips will take place this weekend.

The impact of the war in Iran:

Gas prices spiked after the United States and Israel began launching attacks on Iran at the end of February. Especially crucial in contributing to the increase was the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway largely controlled by Iran, that connects the oil-rich Persian Gulf countries of Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates with the rest of the world.

While the President Donald Trump administration had initially hoped that a ceasefire agreement in April would open up trade in the Strait of Hormuz, blockades have continued, stranding more than 1,500 vessels from 87 countries in the Persian Gulf, according to the U.S. State Department.

Trump has repeatedly set deadlines for Tehran to open the strait, but then backed off. Earlier this month, Trump said the U.S. military would start guiding stranded ships through the strait. The next day, the president said he was pausing that effort to see if an agreement could be reached.

The impact of gas taxes:

Heeding impending Memorial Day travel, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp suspended his state’s gas tax for another two weeks. The extension started on Wednesday and will last until June 3.

“As Georgia families prepare for the Memorial Day travel weekend, they should not feel blindsided by prices at the gas pump,” Kemp said last Friday while citing AAA’s travel forecast.

The temporary suspension of the gas tax, passed into law in March by the state legislature, had been set to expire on Tuesday. The law saves drivers 33.3 cents per gallon for gasoline and 37.3 cents for diesel.

Indiana was also in the middle of a gas tax suspension heading into Memorial Day weekend. Gov. Mike Braun extended the suspension of the state’s gas tax earlier this month, expanding the measure to include a halt on the 36-cent excise tax.

Georgia and Indiana had the second and third-cheapest gas prices out of any U.S. state on Thursday, with both states maintaining prices more than 50 cents below the national average.

Since the excise tax lift on May 8, Indiana’s gas prices have dropped by 49 cents, while the national average gas price has increased by two cents.

Contrasting also with its midwestern neighbors, Indiana’s prices were about $1 cheaper than those of its western neighbor, Illinois.

Mississippi had the lowest average regular gas prices at $4.017, meaning as of Thursday, every U.S. state had average prices above $4.

In both Indiana and Georgia, gas taxes go toward repairing state highways and local roads. In 2024, the Hoosier State collected more than $1 billion in revenue from the gas tax. Georgia collects more than $2 billion a year from its motor fuel tax.

Taxes are only one factor that influences how much the price of gas varies by state. While California leads the country in gas taxes and prices at $6.143 per gallon, the state with the third-highest gas prices, Hawaii, has some of the country’s lowest gas taxes.

Distance from refineries, the volume of gas the area goes through and alternate fuel options nearby also factor into the price of gas.

Highest average gas prices by state, as of Thursday:

  • California: $6.143
  • Washington: $5.788
  • Hawaii: $5.646
  • Oregon: $5.353
  • Alaska & Nevada: $5.273

Lowest average gas prices by state:

  • Mississippi: $4.017
  • Georgia: $4.032
  • Indiana: $4.048
  • Louisiana: $4.057
  • Texas: $4.092

For diesel prices, an even starker contrast

Diesel fuel costs stood at an average of $5.656 per gallon on Thursday. That’s about $2.10 higher than the cost of a gallon of diesel at this time last year.

When were the all-time highest average gas prices?

The record for the highest average price of a regular gallon of gas was set on June 14, 2022, with a national average of just over $5 during the early months of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Detroit-Bound Flight Redirected to Canada Due to Boarding Error Involving Passenger from Ebola-Affected Area, Officials Report

0

An Air France flight bound for Detroit was unexpectedly diverted to Canada when officials discovered that a passenger from an Ebola-affected region in Africa had mistakenly boarded, authorities revealed on Wednesday.

The aircraft, which had departed from France, was rerouted to land in Montreal. This decision came after it was discovered that a traveler from the Democratic Republic of Congo was on board, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) representative told Fox News Digital.

“In light of the entry restrictions established to mitigate the risk of the Ebola virus, this passenger should not have been allowed to board the aircraft,” the spokesperson clarified.

According to the statement, CBP “acted promptly” to prevent the plane from reaching Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

The passenger was removed from the flight upon landing in Montreal, FOX2 Detroit reported, adding that the individual had not been confirmed to be infected with Ebola as of Wednesday evening.

Fox News Digital reached out to Air France for comment but did not immediately hear back.

On Monday, the United States implemented enhanced travel screening, entry restrictions and public health measures due to the widening Ebola outbreak in East and Central Africa. The travel restrictions affect those who have been in Congo, Uganda and South Sudan in recent weeks.

WHO DECLARES EBOLA OUTBREAK IN CENTRAL AFRICA A PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY AFTER 80 SUSPECTED DEATHS

The outbreak involves a rare type of Ebola known as the Bundibugyo virus. Officials said it spread undetected for weeks following the first known death.

So far, there are 139 suspected deaths and almost 600 suspected cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday that 51 cases have been confirmed in Congo’s northern provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, and two cases in Uganda.

Dr. Vasee Moorthy, a special advisor at WHO, said a vaccine to address Bundibugyo would not be available for at least six to nine months.

The WHO has also said “patient zero” has not been found, as health officials work to identify the source of the virus.

The Ebola virus is highly contagious and spreads in the human population through contact with bodily fluids such as vomit, blood or semen. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and at times internal and external bleeding.

Adding her own song, First Christmas, over the top of the video, Pixie penned: ‘first Christmas details’.

Pixie recently told Daily Mail she is ‘so excited’ for Christmas this year and has been discussing the festivities since September.

She said: ‘I’m so excited for this Christmas because I have a newborn baby and a two-year-old, so the magic to have a two-year-old who understands Father Christmas is coming is so exciting.

‘We’ve been talking about Christmas since September’.

The singer returned to work just four weeks after welcoming her little boy to promote her new festive film Christmas Karma.

But she admitted it was a refreshing change to put on clothes and have her appearance catered for by a team of professionals after devoting most of her time to the inevitable pressures of parenthood.

‘I was in hair and makeup this morning,’ she told Capital Breakfast hosts Sian Welby, Jordan North and Chris Stark.

‘But it’s out of the ordinary because I’ve been with just spilt milk, coffee, pyjamas, this isn’t my usual everyday look let’s say at the moment.’

Pixie confirmed that her son Bertie has already adjusted to being a big brother: ‘He is loving it and he said straight away “love you.”‘

‘But it is still a massive change isn’t it for them to just have a new person in the family.’

The singer met her husband for the first time at a Select Model catwalk show in 2010 and quickly struck up a romance. Oliver proposed six years later on the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

The couple finally exchanged vows in June 2022 at Ely Cathedral after they were forced to cancel their wedding several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Explaining their decision to postpone their nuptials rather than push ahead, Pixie previously said: ‘I didn’t want to do it when there were restrictions and we couldn’t invite everyone we wanted to because of the rules.

‘I wanted to wait until we could have the big party – our wedding will be a big party.’

Pixie also spoke about her relationship with Oliver and revealed the elements that make their romance work.

‘I think every relationship is different and there are no real rules,’ she told The Sun.

And, despite their hectic schedules – which often see them working thousands of miles apart – the couple have learned the true value in trusting one another.

She added: ‘Either I’m away or he’s away, and those times are hard. But we’re used to it because it’s been like that since the beginning.

‘We have complete trust, and I think if we didn’t have that, it would be much more difficult than it is. I’d like to think we were heading that way [towards marriage], definitely.’

Eagles’ Nolan Smith Faces Arrest for Alleged 135 mph Speeding Violation

Yet another individual connected to the Georgia football legacy has found themselves in legal trouble due to hazardous driving practices.

Nolan Smith Jr., a linebacker for the Eagles who proudly represented the Bulldogs from 2019 to 2022, was taken into custody last Friday. He faces accusations of speeding and reckless driving in Georgia, as confirmed by the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office to ESPN.

The 25-year-old Smith was allegedly recorded traveling at a staggering 135 mph in a zone with a 70 mph speed limit on the interstate around 10:41 p.m. ET, according to information provided by a sheriff’s office staff member to ESPN on Wednesday.

Following his arrest, Smith was reportedly able to post bond and was subsequently released, according to the sheriff’s office. He is expected to appear in court at a later date.

The Georgia Gazette was the first to break the news of Smith’s arrest.

Smith, 25, was selected by the Eagles — who begin organized team activities next Tuesday — in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

He’s part of an Eagles defense that includes other former Bulldogs stars in Nakobe Dean, Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis.

Smith tallied 6.5 regular-season sacks in 2024 and tallied four in the playoffs while helping the Eagles to their second Super Bowl triumph.

He’s tallied 10.5 sacks in his three seasons, including three in 12 games this past season.

The Georgia football program, which has been led by head coach Kirby Smart the past 10 years, has had problems with some of its players being irresponsible on the roadways.

Recently unveiled documents have disclosed that Queen Elizabeth II was enthusiastic about appointing Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor as a UK trade envoy in 2001. However, complications arose when he expressed a preference for visits to “sophisticated countries” and indulging in ballet evenings.

The Queen was eager for her second son to assume a significant role in advancing national interests, as noted by Sir David Wright, the then-chief executive of British Trade International.

In the eyes of the late Queen, Andrew seemed like a “natural fit” to step into the shoes of her cousin, the Duke of Kent, upon completing his Royal Navy service in July 2001.

She advocated for Andrew’s appointment as trade envoy, a position he secured without undergoing any formal vetting process, according to recent revelations.

This memo was released on Thursday as part of a collection of documents detailing Andrew’s appointment, which granted him access to influential government and business figures globally.

‘The Queen’s wish is that the Duke of Kent should be succeeded in this role by the Duke of York,’ Sir David wrote in a memo to then-foreign secretary Robin Cook dated February 2000 – just before Andrew’s appointment.

‘The Duke of Kent is to relinquish his responsibilities around April next year. That would fit well with the end of the Duke of York’s active naval career. The Queen is very keen that the Duke of York should take on a prominent role in the promotion of national interests.

‘No other member of The Royal Family would be available to succeed the Duke of Kent. The Duke of York’s adoption of his role would seem a natural fit.’

Sir David suggested the role would include some regional trips and two or three overseas visits each year, as well as a ‘leading trade mission from time to time’.

But before taking the job, Andrew moaned about trips to undeveloped nations while working as a UK trade envoy.

The ex-prince griped via an aide about visiting certain states for his taxpayer-funded job – a role that sparked his arrest earlier this year after the release of the Epstein Files.

‘He tended to prefer more sophisticated countries’ and has a preference ‘for ballet over theatre’ – but he didn’t want to play golf as part of the job, a never-seen-before letter said.

As Labour published historic documents on the 2001 appointment of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, it was also revealed:

  • The then Prince refused to play golf as part of the trade envoy role – even if had his clubs with him on the trip – because he considered 18 holes to be ‘private’;
  • Andrew denied he had demand £100,000 for office expenses, in a note prepared for an interview with a national newspaper before his appointment;
  • He insisted his lack of any business experience wouldn’t hinder him in the role and said: ‘I relish the challenge’ and ‘hope to make a difference’;
  • ‘We have found no evidence that a formal due diligence or vetting process was undertaken,’ Labour’s junior trade minister Chris Bryant said in a written statement to parliament on Thursday.

Andrew’s views about his job working for Tony Blair emerged in 11 files related to the disgraced former Duke of York released by 10 Downing Street today.

Andrew’s preferences for trips were revealed in a letter from Kathryn Colvin, Head of Protocol Division, dated January 25, 2000.

She explained that his Principal Private Secretary Captain Blair told her that Andrew had a preference for visits.

But Captain Blair warned her: ‘The Duke of York should not be offered golfing functions abroad. This was a private activity and if he took his clubs with him he would not play in any public sense’.

Ms Colvin wrote that she had been told the former prince was ‘particularly good on high-tech matters, trade, youth (including primary schools and outward bound projects), cultural events, with a preference for ballet rather than theatre, the Commonwealth and military and foreign affairs’.

A line in this correspondence is redacted, with the Government saying some material has remained undisclosed to ‘remove the bare minimum of personal information and information whose release would prejudice international relations’.

Andrew became the UK’s special representative for international trade and investment in 2001 but stepped down 10 years later amid the furore over his friendship with paedophile financier Epstein.

He received no salary for travelling around the world and at home promoting Britain’s business interests, but criticisms were made about the thousands of pounds spent each year on his expenses and travel costs.

The documents, published on Thursday following a motion by Lib Dem MPs, shed more light on the discussions he had with the New Labour government at the time of his appointment.

The party led by Sir Ed Davey today criticised the ‘small paper trail’ released by the Government in relation to the 2001 appointment of Andrew.

Lib Dem chief whip Wendy Chamberlain said: ‘It is shocking and deeply troubling that Andrew was appointed to the trade envoy role with no vetting. Nobody should be above such standards. This raises serious questions about why officials and ministers at the time thought that was acceptable.

‘The lack of documentation provided is itself concerning, as is the time it has taken to get this far. We must get the full files from Government without delay, and an explanation about why there is such a small paper trail. And the Government must commit to mandatory vetting for all similar appointments in future.

‘The victims and survivors of Jeffrey Epstein, and the justice they have been denied for years, are foremost in our minds as this continues.

‘We must have a full public inquiry into Epstein, his links to the British establishment, and the abuse he and his associates perpetrated against women and girls here in the UK.’

A further tranche of files related to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s 2001 appointment as a trade envoy are to be published at a future date, Downing Street said.

A No 10 spokeswoman told reporters: ‘We are complying with the humble address and we’re publishing those documents as quickly as possible.

‘We’re also supporting the police investigation as you would expect.

‘And we’ll provide the House with any other substantive documents we find in the course of that work.’

Asked whether it was acceptable that no vetting was carried out into Andrew, the spokeswoman said: ‘We have found no evidence that a formal due diligence or vetting process was undertaken, and there’s no evidence that this was considered.

‘And this is due to the fact that the role was a continuation of the royal family’s involvement in trade and investment promotion work following the Duke of Kent’s decision to relinquish his duties as vice chairman of British Trade International.’

Peter Mandelson has been accused of disclosing sensitive information to their mutual friend, the paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, while he was working as Business Secretary.

Andrew’s arrest on February 19 – his 66th birthday – followed allegations that he had shared sensitive information with the late paedophile financier while working as trade envoy.

Both Mandelson, who was also arrested following the release of the Epstein Files in the US, and Andrew, claim they had no knowledge of Epstein’s crimes and being mentioned in the files is not an indication of guilt.

Both men were released under investigation and deny any wrongdoing.

Their cases will ultimately be considered by the CPS Special Crime Division, which deals with the most sensitive and complex cases.

It has previously been reported that detectives investigating Andrew may try to broaden the scope of their enquiries beyond the misconduct in public office offences, for which it is difficult to mount a prosecution.

The former Duke of York could be investigated over other potential corruption offences on top of a wider inquiry into alleged sex trafficking, police sources have claimed.

Andrew has been dogged for more than 15 years over allegations about his relationship with Epstein, and his arrest plunged the monarchy into a constitutional crisis.

According to emails published by the US Department of Justice, Andrew appeared to have forwarded official reports of trips to Singapore, Hong Kong and Vietnam onto the financier in 2010 and 2011.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has tried to press US authorities to expedite the release of unredacted exchanges in the files.

Andrew’s decision to quit the envoy role in 2011 came in the same year he was pictured with his arm around his primary accuser, Virginia Giuffre, who said she was trafficked to the former duke at the home of convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell.

Ms Giuffre claimed she had sex with the former prince three times – at Maxwell’s home in London, at Epstein’s New York townhouse and on the disgraced financier’s Caribbean island, Little St James.

Andrew paid Ms Giuffre millions of pounds to settle a civil suit in the US in 2022, a woman he has claimed never to have met.

Top Gun Star Breaks Silence After 10-Year Media Hiatus Over Misrepresented Profile

Over a decade after being branded as “kind of a d–k,” Miles Teller is working to overturn that negative perception.

The “Top Gun” star has largely avoided participating in editorial profiles since a 2015 Esquire article left him dissatisfied with how he was portrayed.

Speaking with IndieWire, the 39-year-old actor reflected on the difficulties of maintaining a long-lasting career in a constantly evolving industry. He expressed that his career path almost veered off course due to what he felt was an inaccurate portrayal in the magazine piece.

“That was so mishandled,” Teller remarked. “I’ve avoided doing profiles because I realized that if the interview isn’t recorded on camera, there’s a risk of being misquoted, having things taken out of context, or even having events misrepresented.”

“It felt like such a violation of what actually transpired,” he added.

Teller recalled telling his team that he wasn’t interested in that form of press, “Because I’m reading this and this doesn’t sound like me to me. This is not life, so why would I ever want to be a part of something where they can just put that in?”

“So it’s unfortunate that being a good person, that doesn’t sell,” Teller confessed. “People want to click on the negativity.

“If you go to bed and put your head on your pillow and how you treat people truly, that’s what matters. That [2015] interview was like 12 years ago.”

Despite what the public had access to through printed words, Teller defended his peers for being able to recognize work ethic over personality clashes.

“The actors, the directors, the crew, the producers … you can’t hide who you are when you’re on set,” Teller said.

Teller’s truth caught the ire of social media users who questioned the sincerity behind his self-inflicted media ban.

“Ironically, sounds like kind of a d—,” one user wrote, while another, “I mean, a bunch of people who’ve met him and talked to him irl have said he and his wife aren’t very pleasant to talk to. I don’t think it’s because of the press profiles.”

One user noted that it’s “tough how negativity sells these days.”

“I can see why he’d be cautious after that experience,” one user wrote on X. “Misquotes can be really damaging to someone’s reputation.”

Following the 2015 expose, Teller slammed the publication online, and wrote that they “couldn’t be more wrong” about the title bestowed upon him.

“Miles Teller is on a quest for greatness (with a bit of d—ishness too,)” Esquire tweeted at the time.

He responded, “@esquire couldn’t be more wrong. I don’t think there’s anything cool or entertaining about being a d-— or an a—ole. Very misrepresenting.”

Stephen Colbert’s Enduring Romance: A 35-Year Love Story with Wife Evie McGee Colbert

Stephen Colbert candidly admits he was far from ready for the spotlight when he first encountered Evelyn “Evie” McGee. Their initial meeting happened during their college days, as Colbert reminisced on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live in 2024. “We met at a party through a mutual friend from Charleston,” the Northwestern alumnus shared. “I was not in the best state of mind, and Evie seemed like a distant frost queen on a mountain top.”

At that point, Colbert didn’t see any potential for a relationship. Reflecting on their brief encounter, he admitted, “The first time, I thought, ‘This is going nowhere.’ Our conversation lasted maybe 30 seconds.”

Evie, who had graduated from the University of Virginia in 1985, wasn’t particularly impressed either. She described the future 11-time Emmy winner as “an immature, skinny boy.”

Serendipity, however, had other plans for these Charleston, S.C. natives. It wasn’t until 1990, when they unexpectedly ran into each other in a theater lobby in their hometown, that something clicked. Recalling the encounter on Today in 2024, Stephen shared, “A little voice in my head said, ‘There’s your wife. You’re going to marry her.’” And indeed, that chance meeting turned out to be the beginning of their enduring relationship.

In fact, lightning didn’t strike for the Charleston, S.C., natives until 1990, when they saw each other in the lobby of a theater in their hometown and, as Stephen recalled on Today in 2024, “A little voice in my head said, ‘There’s your wife. You’re going to marry her.’”

Meanwhile, Evie was “intrigued.”
