A disturbing video from Ceuta, Spain’s North African enclave, has sparked outrage after a group described as migrants was seen striking a young dolphin during a beachside celebration, with reports suggesting the animal may have died.

Footage shared widely on social media appears to show several men and boys raising what looked like a baby bottlenose dolphin above their heads as a crowd nearby cheered and celebrated.

According to local accounts, the dolphin had swum unusually close to the shoreline before members of the group allegedly dragged it from the water at El Trampolín beach.

The scene quickly angered residents in the area, some of whom reportedly confronted the group and attempted to intervene as the incident unfolded.

One of the men reportedly struck the dolphin with a stick, mortally wounding it. Some people were heard shouting “no” in the video, and some men were cheering. Others appeared concerned at the treatment of the marine mammal.

Someone eventually took the mammal and placed it back in the water. The incident has sparked outrage among Ceuta residents.

“On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, a disoriented dolphin calf swimming near the shore at Trampolin Beach, in Ceuta, was brutally pulled from the water,” Nadia Garcia Gomez wrote in a social media post announcing a petition to have those involved arrested. 

“Eyewitnesses and local media reported that the animal was handled as if it were an object and violently struck on the head with a stick, causing its immediate death.”

Gomez called the migrants’ actions an act of “extreme and unjustifiable cruelty” that cannot go unpunished. She noted that dolphins are a protected species under Spanish and European laws.

Other Ceuta residents have called for the migrants involved to be prosecuted and expelled from the country.

Ceuta has been gripped by an influx of migrants from neighboring Morocco. In July, more than 70,000 migrants stormed the tiny enclave’s border defenses. Although most of the migrants returned home shortly afterward, thousands have remained.

Some residents have called for deportations and tougher action from the central government in Madrid. Last week, angry locals tore down migrant tents and shelters at the beach.

Serena and Venus Williams’ much-hyped US Open doubles comeback came to an abrupt and dramatic end Friday night, as the iconic sisters exited in the first round after surrendering a 5-0 advantage in the deciding 10-point tiebreak.

The Williams sisters had made a late move into the women’s doubles field in New York, accepting a wildcard shortly before the tournament after teaming up earlier this summer at the Cincinnati Open following Serena’s return to the court.

Serena, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, had stepped away from professional tennis four years earlier, with many fans believing her emotional appearance on Arthur Ashe Stadium at the US Open would be the final chapter of her legendary career.

Her comeback trail had already included a singles wildcard at Wimbledon earlier in the summer, where she was edged in three hard-fought sets by Joint — the same opponent she would encounter again under the lights in New York.

But Serena could not turn the tables two months later against the Australian world No. 72, who now owns an unexpected 2-0 mark against one of tennis’ greatest champions after the American crowd favorites fell 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-7(7).

The Williams sisters received a hero’s welcome as they kicked off the night session, with the stadium fast to fill up with fans eager to see the blockbuster siblings back in action for the first time on Arthur Ashe since 2022. 

While both sisters were laser-focused on their evening’s work ahead, Serena let her fashion do the talking, sporting a bomber jacket to walk onto court which listed the years she won singles and doubles titles at the US Open.  

And after complaints had been made all week about the noise during play on the over 23,000-capacity stadium, you might have been able to hear a proverbial pin drop as Joint prepared her first serve to kick-off the match. 

The Australian must have learned a lot from her match-up this year against Serena, after admitting that she had been ‘intimidated’ by the 44-year-old due to the iconic position she occupies within the sport. Joint was composed as she held serve, with both the 20-year-old and her partner Chan admirably calm under the lights of Arthur Ashe. 

The two pairs passed the opening games between one another, with the occasion perhaps top of mind for all four women on court.

But Serena and Venus had an explosive crowd on their side, who provided an enormous roar at the sight of the first real moment of Serena brilliance – a thunderous backhand which could only force an error.

The Williams sisters indisputably have history, but Chan and Joint are a tested recent pair, in July reaching a final together in Memphis. Their partnership felt sharp and familiar, and it was no surprised when they pinched the early break. 

Under the gaze of New York Knicks hero Karl-Anthony Towns and his new wife Jordyn Woods, Williams Squared were full of fight, and strong net play.

A bullish break-back for 2-3 ensued, with the crowd firmly onside. They continued to fend off break points too as Chan and Joint grew into the game – but eventually succumbed at 5-3, with their opponents navigating a tricky service game to pull off the opening set. 

They would find the second set far thornier to deal with. Although their games on serve stretched, Venus and Serena were able to knuckle down and hold serve, keeping pace with Chan and Joint all the way to a 4-3 lead. 

Their run continued. 5-4 up, Serena’s excellent backhand down-the-line won the sisters the opening point. Joint’s serving, which was capable of causing a lot of problems for Serena and Williams, had to be pinpoint-accurate. 

But Joint and Chan tightened up, a fine return from Serena brought up deuce, and advantage – it was set point Williams. They had two, and were even assisted by a rare Joint double fault, but they could not convert, and somehow, their opponents clung on. 

A strong serving game from Serena, as expected, steadied the ship for 6-5, and after Joint and Chan did the same for a tiebreak. As the stakes rose, so did the Williamses levels, and it was the sibling duo who had the lead, handing Serena the opportunity to serve out the set. She double-faulted the first time, but as Joint hit wildly out into the stands, Serena and Venus took it to the decider. 

This was the last time that Serena and Venus would lead. A particularly strong bit of net play from Chan in the third game helped hand their opponents the early break.  But the Williams sisters broke back to make it 4-3 in the third and confirmed it with a confident hold that had Chan flinging her racquet on the court in frustration. 

In a third set filled with vintage shot making, Venus and Serena wrenched momentum from their rivals with the older Williams sister in particular looking a far cry from the singles player who lost her 15th match in a row at the beginning of this tournament. 

Another tiebreak beckoned. The result, however, looked a little different, with the sisters building a strong early lead, only for Joint and Chan to pull off an almighty comeback. 

All in, the match lasted just over three hours. Venus and Serena more than proved that they can be competitive against doubles players on the tour in 2026. But their wait for a win this year goes on.  

Carlos Alcaraz became an unexpected talking point at the U.S. Open on Monday when viewers and fans in the stands noticed his nipple repeatedly slipping into view beneath his shirt.

By Friday afternoon, the wardrobe issue was no longer part of the show during his straight-sets third-round victory, but the Spanish star still managed to send tennis fans into a frenzy.

Following his 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 win over Wu Yibing at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Alcaraz removed both his shirt and undershirt, briefly exposing his full torso courtside.

Spectators seated near the front rows quickly raised their phones to record the moment involving the men’s No. 2 seed, with at least one fan appearing visibly stunned, mouth wide open.

Alcaraz had already drawn attention in the opening round with an outfit created in collaboration with Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Nike brand, which repeatedly left his right nipple exposed during the match.

He explained that he added an undershirt because “I think I saw my nipple too much lately.”

“I felt like, you know, I could hide it for at least one match,” Alcaraz added.

Alcaraz, the defending champ at the Flushing Meadows Grand Slam, said that having the extra shirt on today wasn’t a bother to him.

“I feel really comfortable, you know, with another shirt. So I think I’m going to stay like that,” he said. “Maybe, you know, the second round was, a little bit distracting for me, but not that much.”

Undershirt or not, Alcaraz has looked true to form in this year’s U.S. Open, having lost just one set through his first three matches.

He’ll face his biggest test of the tournament so far on Sunday when he faces No. 20 seed American Tommy Paul.

A wonderfully odd lineup of researchers earned recognition this week for science that sounds strange at first glance but is very real, including work on cockroach milk, the origins of kissing and an underwear-based method for measuring soil health.

The Ig Nobel Prize ceremony, a satirical celebration of unusual scientific research with genuine academic roots, was held Thursday in Zurich and organized by the digital publication Annals of Improbable Research.

Launched in 1991, the offbeat awards were staged outside the United States for the first time this year, amid concerns that some winners might face visa difficulties traveling to the U.S.

Among the other honorees were scientists who examined why wealthier people may be more prone to unethical acts, including taking candy from a baby, along with studies exploring the correct way to blow your nose and what happens when researchers carefully step on snakes to learn what triggers them to bite.

“The general pattern seems to be that, with wealth and rising power, you become less engaged with the needs of others and less burdened by the needs of social relationships,” Dr. Paul Piff, a social psychologist at the University of California, Irvine said, according to the Guardian. 

“Taking candy from children might be the least of our worries, but it’s emblematic of the tendency to prioritize one’s own needs over those of others.”

The final four honorees included those studying the power of having mutual enemies, attempts at a splash-free urinal, using dead mosquitos for 3D printing and research that found parents love the smell of their newborn babies but not teenage children.

In case you’re wondering, the team studying the history of kissing has defined it as “a non-agonistic interaction involving directed, intraspecific, oral-oral contact with some movement of the lips/mouthparts and no food transfer.” Romantic.

“Next time you kiss someone, you can think, ‘This is a 21.5 million-year-old tradition that I’m honoring here,” evolutionary biologist Matilda Brindle of the University of Oxford said, according to NPR. “It’s not just a modern human behavior. It’s really ancestral.’ And to us, that suggests that it probably has quite a useful evolutionary function.”

Brindle said her team believes that Neanderthals not only kissed each other. They may have also kissed early humans.

All the honorees receive a trophy that looks like a cross between a mushroom and a human foot while the audience throws paper airplanes at them.

The Ig Nobel has no relation to the actual Nobel Prize, which will announce its honorees in October.
