Xi’s Stern Warning: How Taiwan Tensions with Trump Could Ignite a US-China Conflict

0

BEIJING — On Thursday, China’s President Xi Jinping issued a stern warning to U.S. President Donald Trump, highlighting the potential for conflict between their nations over the matter of Taiwan if mishandled. This cautionary note came in stark contrast to Trump’s earlier commendations of Xi.

Their discussion at the eagerly awaited summit in Beijing highlighted the significant differences between the two leaders on various challenging issues. These include unresolved trade tensions, the situation in Iran, and the delicate relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan, which operates as a self-governing entity but is claimed by China as its own.

The meeting also hinted that Trump’s three-day stay in China might emphasize ceremonial grandeur rather than achieving concrete political or economic agreements.

During their two-hour private meeting at the Great Hall of the People, both leaders were part of an elaborate welcoming event. This included the firing of cannons, a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” alongside China’s national anthem, and a display by numerous schoolchildren waving flowers and the flags of both nations.

According to a post on X by Mao Ning, the spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, Xi emphasized to Trump that “the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations.”

“If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy,” she wrote.

That came after a brief public exchange before the meeting began in which Trump offered platitudes, telling Xi: “You’re a great leader. Sometimes people don’t like me saying it, but I say it anyway, because it’s true.”

“It’s an honor to be your friend,” Trump said before promising that “the relationship between China and the USA is going to be better than ever before.”

Xi was far more stark than Trump in his opening remarks, expressing hope that the U.S. and China could avoid conflict and asking “whether the two countries can transcend the ‘Thucydides Trap’ and forge a new model for relations between major powers.”

That’s a term, popular in foreign policy studies, that refers to the idea that when a rising power threatens to displace an established power, the result is often war. Xi’s use of the term as Trump offered optimism was noteworthy and foreshadowed his closed-door comments about Taiwan.

Xi nonetheless struck a more conciliatory tone when describing the overall relationship. “Cooperation benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both,” Xi said. “The two countries should be partners rather than rivals.”

Economic questions sparked by the Iran war loom

After their meeting, Xi took Trump on a Tour of Beijing Temple of Heaven, and the pair were planning to attend a state banquet in the evening.

In its summary of what said privately, the White House said the meeting touched on ways to enhance economic cooperation, including expanding market access for American businesses into China and increasing Chinese investment into U.S. industries.

That assessment didn’t mention Taiwan directly, but, in relation to Iran, said both sides had agreed that the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for oil and natural gas, must remain open. The strait’s closure has stranded tankers and caused energy prices to spike, threatening global economic growth.

The war and its effects are dominating Trump’s domestic agenda and stoking fears about the prospect of a weakening U.S. economy as November’s midterm elections – when Republicans will be looking to maintain control of Congress – approach.

China is the largest purchaser of Iranian oil, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity that Trump would make the case for Beijing to exert its influence on Iran, noting that administration officials would underscore that “economies are melting down because of this crisis” which means consumers are “buying less Chinese product.”

It’s not clear if Trump persuaded Xi to wield its influence. The White House said Xi opposed to any implementation of tolls on vessels crossing the strait and expressed interest in China potentially purchasing more U.S. oil to reduce Chinese dependence on Gulf oil in the future.

Taiwan issues remain contentious

Xi’s warning about Taiwan reflects China’s displeasure with a U.S. plan to sell weapons to the island. The Trump administration has approved an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, but has yet to begin fulfilling it.

The U.S. has a longstanding commitment to help the island defend itself if attacked, but Trump has shown greater ambivalence toward Taiwan, fueling speculation about whether the president could be persuaded to dial back American support.

Taiwan, meanwhile, said it was grateful for Washington’s “long-term support.”

“The government views all actions that contribute to regional stability and the management of potential risks from authoritarian expansion positively,” Michelle Lee, a spokesperson for Taiwan’s premier, told reporters. She added that the U.S. “has also repeatedly reiterated its firm and clear position of support for Taiwan.”

US still hopes to secure trade wins

The White House has insisted that Trump wouldn’t be making the trip without an eye toward securing results before he leaves, suggesting there could be announcements coming on trade.

That could include a Chinese commitment to buy U.S. soybeans, beef and aircraft. Trump administration officials also want to work toward establishing a Board of Trade with China to address commercial differences between the countries.

The leaders discussed trade on Thursday, with Xi saying that China’s door of opportunity will open wider. Xi also met with a collection of U.S. business leaders who accompanied Trump to China.

But neither side has yet offered concrete details on what might come out of Trump’s trip at a time when Beijing’s close economic ties to Iran could complicate matters.

George Chen, a partner at The Asia Group consultancy, said Xi has made his “‘red line’ crystal clear” on Taiwan. But Chen said Xi also signaled a welcoming tone on the economic front and a desire to ensure the U.S. business community that China is a place where profits can flow.

The U.S. and China reached a trade truce last year that calmed each side’s threats to impose steep tariffs on the other. The White House says there have been ongoing discussions and mutual interest in extending the agreement.

The leaders also discussed further stemming the flow of fentanyl precursor chemicals into the United States, and increasing Chinese purchases of U.S. agricultural products, according to the White House.

Physician Sentenced to 13 Months for Striking Pedestrian and Proceeding to Work at Emergency Room

0

Investigators revealed that about 20 minutes after hitting Hernandez-Mendoza, Kolarsky entered his workplace at a nearby hospital.

PORTLAND, Ore. — On Tuesday, a Portland physician received a prison sentence for a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred in December 2024.

Kenneth Kolarsky, aged 59, was sentenced by a Marion County judge to 13 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. This came after Kolarsky pleaded guilty to attempting to evade his responsibilities as a driver involved in an injury accident.

On December 26, as Kolarsky was commuting to work, he struck Nicolas Hernandez-Mendoza, who was crossing North Pacific Highway near Williams Avenue in Woodburn. Before the collision, Hernandez-Mendoza had activated the crosswalk safety lights, which are intended to warn drivers of pedestrians ahead.

Following the collision, Kolarsky paused briefly, maneuvered around the injured Hernandez-Mendoza, and then left the scene, according to the prosecutor’s account.

Officers found Hernandez-Mendoza in the road. He was transported to a Salem hospital, where he died during emergency surgery. He had suffered a fractured cervical vertebra and a fractured pelvis. Surgeons were unable to stop internal bleeding from his spleen.

Investigators determined that approximately 20 minutes after striking Hernandez-Mendoza, Kolarsky walked into Legacy Silverton Medical Center Hospital, where he worked as an emergency room physician with Northwest Acute Care Specialists.

“Regardless of why the accident occurred, to leave a scene after striking someone with your vehicle is a callous disregard for human life” said Chief Deputy District Attorney Brendan Murphy. “That’s intolerable, and especially offensive when it is committed by a professional who takes an oath to ‘do no harm’”

Woodburn police arrested Kolarsky on May 17, 2025. The prosecutor’s office said charges were limited to the hit-and-run because there was “insufficient evidence” to determine whether the crash itself was criminal.

During sentencing, Judge Courtland Geyer said Kolarsky left “a community member fallen and in the dark” and acted with an “absence of dignity,” according to the prosecutor’s office.

Legacy Silverton Medical Center contracts with NACS to staff its emergency rooms. At the time of the crash, the president of NACS said Kolarsky had been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Rebecca Adlington Opens Up About the Emotional Challenges of Her Pregnancy Following the Loss of Her Daughter Two Years Ago

Rebecca Adlington, the celebrated Olympian, recently opened up about the emotional challenges she is facing during her current pregnancy. As she prepares to welcome her third child, she has candidly shared the complexities of her journey.

At 36, Rebecca announced in September that she is expecting what she describes as a ‘small miracle,’ following the heartbreak of enduring two miscarriages over the past three years. This forthcoming addition to her family comes as a beacon of hope after such difficult experiences.

Rebecca, who has already embraced motherhood with her two-year-old son Albie, whom she shares with her husband Andy Parsons, and her eight-year-old daughter Summer from her previous marriage to Harry Needs, noted that this pregnancy feels distinctly different from her previous ones. Her feelings this time are tinged with a greater sense of fear and apprehension.

In an effort to navigate these emotions, Rebecca has sought counselling, a step she revealed in a heartfelt message accompanied by a radiant selfie in which she is seen cradling her baby bump during a serene winter walk. Her openness about seeking support underscores the emotional toll this pregnancy has taken and highlights the importance of mental health during such a transformative period.

Alongside a glowing selfie cradling her baby bump during a sunny winter walk, the former athlete explained how she has had counselling to help with her emotions.

She wrote: ‘This pregnancy has been completely different. Not many photos, no gender reveal, no baby shower. This isn’t because I’m not excited, it’s because I’m fearful. Anyone who’s had a rainbow pregnancy will likely understand.

‘Mentally and emotionally, this has been my hardest pregnancy. After a counselling session with @petalscharity, I wanted to share a few things that have really helped me, in case they help someone else too.’

Rebecca admitted she is ‘struggling and anxious’ but explained how she has been encouraged to focus on the differences between her pregancy and miscarriages.

She continued: ‘I’ve really tried hard recently to not compare. After loss, comparison can feel automatic. I was encouraged to focus on the differences between this pregnancy and our miscarriages, rather than the similarities.

‘We’ve given our little one a nick name, ours is Jellytot. It’s helped us stop comparing to Harper and allowed our family to start bonding with little one already too.

‘It took me a long time to admit I’m struggling but learnt it’s ok to admit it’s hard. Being anxious and struggling doesn’t take away from how grateful I am to be pregnant, it just means I’m human’.

The BBC Sports presenter said she was ‘cautiously overjoyed’ when she first shared the happy news on Instagram in September.

Rebecca, who shot to prominence as an Olympic swimmer, posted a sweet black and white photo of her baby scan as she described it as a ‘small miracle’.

She wrote alongside it: ‘We want to share that we are expecting a child. It has been an emotional and physical roller coaster navigating these past 19 months of trying, but this pregnancy has been a small miracle.

‘We questioned whether we wanted to share this news but we want to continue to be open and honest about our journey and be mindful of the struggles that others have had and continue to have.

‘We are taking each day as it comes and are incredibly grateful for the care we are receiving from the NHS (Rainbow Team) and are feeling overwhelmingly supported by them.

‘While we are cautiously overjoyed, we carry awareness of the quiet struggles many face, and we send love to those hearts too. We know so many people are still waiting for this kind of news.’

In August Rebecca opened up about the heart-wrenching reminder of her second miscarriage that left her ‘hating her body’ when she got home from hospital.

The TV star and husband Andy spoke to This Morning hosts Emma Willis and Craig Doyle about their two devastating miscarriages – in a bid to raise awareness and help anyone else who has suffered.

Rebecca had her first miscarriage at 12 weeks back in 2022, and was told that she had a molar pregnancy – so this resulted in her having emergency surgery.

A molar pregnancy occurs when a lump of abnormal cells grows in the womb instead of a healthy foetus.

The following year she was told about her second miscarriage at her 20-week scan, and she had to give birth to her child, a daughter the couple named Harper. She admitted that she really struggled to look at herself afterwards because it looked like she was still expecting.

Speaking about her heartbreaking ordeal, Rebecca bravely told ITV viewers: ‘I was angry at my body, my body let me down, it didn’t give me that: “This is going wrong! Go get help!”‘

Breaking her silence on her pregnancy in a new interview, Rebecca has opened up about her anxiety and revealed how she is leaning into the feelings

‘It didn’t tell me anything. I had no symptoms. That was really hard to get over, and afterwards as well, you still look pregnant.

‘That is very hard to deal with, the fact that you give birth, the baby isn’t alive, and then you go home, you have to look in the mirror as a woman and still look 20 weeks pregnant.

‘It’s incredibly hard. I hated my body, I fell out of love with my body, even though my human body delivered two healthy children, four Olympic gold medals and yet I just couldn’t understand why it had let me down now.

‘And the second time as well. It’s hard the second time around.’

Kate Embraces the Great Outdoors During Italian Retreat

0

The Princess of Wales is spending time with children immersed in learning amidst the beautiful landscapes of Italy today, as she continues her tour.

Catherine has captivated the hearts of Italians with her approachable demeanor and her ability to speak their language, a skill she picked up during her gap year as a young adult.

Her journey today takes her further into Reggio Emilia, a city in the north renowned for its innovative methods in early childhood education.

At the Salvador Allende Scuola dell’infanzia, a school dedicated to children under six, she is observing firsthand how the institution integrates nature-based education.

This school places a strong focus on learning in the great outdoors and fostering environmental awareness among its students.

Italians following the ‘Reggio Emilia Approach’ to young education consider the natural environment as ‘the third teacher’.

In a nod to her hosts, the princess was wearing Italian fashion: a blazer by Blaize Milano and a bracelet from Atelier Molayem, a small brand based in Milan.

Later Catherine is due to visit a creative resource centre to learn how local businesses and the wider community support early childhood education through the Reggio Emilia Approach.

Supported by around 200 companies, the centre recovers materials destined for disposal and reimagines them as tools for investigation and learning for children.

For her final engagement in Italy, the Princess will visit a rural ‘agriturismo’ – a farm-stay – to reflect on her experiences during the trip – and learn how to make pasta.

She is joining the team at Al Vigneto in preparing lunch, along with many of the people she has met during her visit to Italy.

I know how the Queen REALLY felt about Meghan

Hi! I’m Richard Eden, Diary Editor and author of the Palace Confidential newsletter.

I have spent hours looking into what Meghan Markle’s relationship with the Queen was really like. And while I can tell you Meghan was welcomed with open arms, my sources have told me the Queen was very quickly concerned. Sign up here to read what I discovered

Yesterday, the princess greeted well-wishers with an ‘I am Catarina’ as she won hearts in Italy and marked her royal comeback in style.

Italians gave Catherine a rapturous welcome as she slipped easily back into royal duties on her first solo overseas trip in four years.

Putting her cancer treatment firmly behind her, she met children – including a very excited-looking baby – posed for selfies and chatted to the residents of Reggio Emilia.

The city in northern Italy is famed for its pioneering approach to young children, a crusade close to the princess’s heart.

Baby Elena, aged three months, was held over the barrier by her mother Marta and beamed as the future queen stopped to play with her.

Looking relaxed and radiant in a blue Edeline Lee trouser suit, the princess – who honed basic Italian during her gap year in Florence – met schoolchildren and told them in their native language: ‘I speak a bit of Italian. What is your name? I am Catarina.’

Alice, five, said afterwards: ‘She asked my name in Italian. She spoke Italian very well.’

Alice was among a crowd of about 3,000 people who welcomed Catherine at the start of her two-day trip to the city.

It is the first solo overseas official visit for the princess, 44, since she went to Denmark in 2022 before her cancer treatment, and palace aides say it is a ‘huge moment’ for her to be back.

Yesterday she wowed her hosts on a royal ‘walkabout’ outside the town hall.

Maria Angelo Redaelli, a teacher who had set her alarm for 3.15am to make a 130-mile trip from her home, said: ‘I just love the Royal Family and I just had to be here. The princess said my hat was very glamorous and I gave her a rose. She is so beautiful.’

Marilena Prediere, 43, of Reggio Emilia, said: ‘I said give a big hug to your children. I said you are beautiful and it’s a pleasure to meet you. This is a historic moment.’

Royal fans whooped and bellowed ‘Bellissima’, ‘Kate’ and ‘We love you’.

At a pre-school later, Catherine said ‘ciao’ as she joined a group of five youngsters writing animal names.

Spotting one that said Lupo, which means wolf in Italian, she said: ‘That was the name of our dog. Our dog was called Lupo.’

A teacher said ‘it must have been a big dog’, but the princess replied: ‘No, it wasn’t actually. It had a big personality.’

Outside the Anne Frank infant school, excited youngsters swamped her with hugs and high-fives.

And after she left, many of the teachers started crying, showing just how much the royal visit means to the small Italian city.

Catherine also visited the world-renowned Loris Malaguzzi International Centre where she met pioneers of the ‘Reggio Emilia approach’ of child-led learning for under sixes – which is similar to the Montessori method and aligned with her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.

The princess said that it was important to encourage ‘children these days to slow down’ because ‘their world is so fast-paced now’.

Shocking Twist: Alex Murdaugh Secures New Trial Amid Allegations of Jury Tampering by Court Clerk

0

Alex Murdaugh, the fallen South Carolina legal figure convicted of murdering his wife and son, is set to have his case revisited after the state’s highest court overturned his murder convictions due to allegations of jury tampering.

The Supreme Court of South Carolina determined that the 2023 trial, which resulted in Murdaugh receiving a life sentence, was compromised by misconduct from a court official.

Central to this dramatic development is Rebecca “Becky” Hill, the former Clerk of Court for Colleton County, who managed the high-profile trial. She is accused of improperly influencing the jury, allegedly making remarks that could have biased jurors and nudged them toward a guilty decision.

Testimonies examined by the court revealed that jurors recalled Hill advising them to “watch him closely,” “observe his actions,” and cautioning them against being “fooled” by the defense.

One juror recalled “that Hill told the jurors not to be fooled by the evidence Murdaugh’s defense presented,” according to the document, saying, “They’re going to say things that will try to confuse you. Don’t let them confuse you or convince you or throw you off.”

The documents say Hill tried to “insert herself into the jury’s deliberations through these comments was in line with her stated desire for a guilty verdict to sell more copies of the book she planned to write.”

The ruling references the post-trial court’s finding that, “Hill was attracted by the siren call of celebrity” and “allowed her desire for the public attention of the moment to overcome her duty to her oath of office.”

“Accordingly, we hold Murdaugh’s right to a fair trial by an impartial jury was violated, and the post-trial court erred in denying his motion for a new trial,” the ruling says.

Because Hill was a top court official, her words carried unusual weight and raised serious concerns that the jury’s decision may not have been based solely on the evidence presented at trial.

In December 2025, Hill pleaded guilty to four charges — obstruction of justice and perjury for showing a reporter photographs that were sealed court exhibits and then lying about it, plus two counts of misconduct in office for taking bonuses and promoting a book she wrote on the trial through her public office.

“There is no excuse for the mistakes I made. I’m ashamed of them and will carry that shame the rest of my life,” Hill said in a statement read to the court.

She was sentenced to three years of probation.

In 2023, Murdaugh was convicted of gunning down his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, at the family’s hunting estate in 2021. The case exposed a web of lies, including Murdaugh’s opioid addiction and millions in stolen client funds.

Despite the legal win Wednesday, Murdaugh will not be walking free. He remains behind bars serving lengthy sentences for a string of financial crimes that cemented his fall from power.

For his financial crimes, Murdaugh was sentenced in state court to 27 years in prison after pleading guilty to 22 counts including money laundering and breach of trust. In federal court, he received a 40-year sentence for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, which he is serving concurrently with his state time.

Though his murder convictions and subsequent life sentences were overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court on Wednesday, he remains in prison to serve the financial sentences.

Margaret Cho Reveals How Trump and ICE Cost Her a Role in ‘Heated Rivalry

Renowned actress and comedian Margaret Cho has attributed the loss of a role in the popular HBO Max series “Heated Rivalry” to President Trump and the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In a recent episode of the “I Never Liked You” podcast, Cho shared, “Last year, I received a script for a pilot that I was really enthusiastic about, but it was being filmed in Canada.”

She expressed her concerns over her outspoken criticism of ICE and the Trump administration, saying, “I was terrified that my vocal stance against ICE and this administration would lead to my detention at the border and possible imprisonment in an ICE facility if I attempted to travel there.”

Cho confirmed that the project was the 2025 sports romance show centered on two professional hockey players, portrayed by Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, who develop a romantic relationship despite playing for opposing teams.

Despite missing out on the role, Cho shared that she has since grown to appreciate the show and admires the actress who ultimately took on her intended role.

Cho also suggested she is looking to potentially appear in its second season.

“I’ve watched it. I’ve hosted some rewatch parties, and I’m like it kills me, like it kills me because of Trump,” Cho said.

Cho has been among many celebrities who have attacked Trump in the past, calling him “abhorrent” in 2015.

Earlier this year, Cho recalled being asked to appear on Trump’s show “The Apprentice” because Trump was reportedly “a fan” of her comedy, which she found “weird.”

“I was asked several times to be on it, season after season, and they kept saying, ‘Well, Donald Trump really loves you. Please come on,’” Cho said in March.

“I just had a bad feeling about it, because I did go on one of the challenges because my friend Cyndi Lauper was competing one year, and so she did something at a diner, so I went, and I helped out.”

She continued, “I was at the diner, and so I was part of an episode, but I never actually was a contestant, but I was asked several times because Donald Trump was a fan.”

Melanie Griffith Conceals Antonio Tattoo in Stylish Transformation

By HEIDI PARKER, US DEPUTY SHOWBUSINESS EDITOR

Just days after being spotted in Taormina, Italy, sans her wedding ring from Antonio Banderas, her partner of 18 years, Melanie Griffith took another noticeable step in signaling the end of their marriage.

On Tuesday, the actress, who is 56, appeared at a Film Festival awards ceremony with her friend Eva Longoria, noticeably concealing the heart tattoo bearing Antonio’s name on her right arm with layers of makeup. This comes nearly two weeks after she initiated divorce proceedings from the star of Expendables 3. Despite the personal upheaval, Griffith was seen smiling, suggesting a sense of optimism during the event.

On Tuesday Melanie Griffith appeared to have gone a step further by covering up her Antonio heart tattoo on her right arm with heavy makeup.

The 56-year-old actress was seen smiling as she displayed the altered ink while attending a Film Festival awards ceremony with friend Eva Longoria almost two weeks after filing for divorce from the Expendables 3 star.

Antonio’s name seems to have been covered with brown makeup in several photographs provided by Getty.

Whether she was sitting or standing, the name looks to have been blurred out in the exact same way suggesting the photo was not tampered with.

The decorative design and heart shape around his name were both still present. But Antonio’s name was very faint and at times almost completely covered.

The Working Girl star was last seen showing off the ink a week ago in LA.

It is doubtful she had the name lasered off as it takes several sessions to get such a large tattoo removed.

Griffith, the daughter of Alfred Hitchcock actress Tippi Hedren, first showed off her ink in 1998 at the premiere of Banderas’ film The Mask Of Zorro, which also starred Catherine Zeta-Jones.

She has since proudly displayed the tat at awards shows and charity events.

In 2011 the name was on full display as she put her arm around Antonio at the Cannes Film Festival.

This is the first time the Body Double star has stepped out with the tattoo altered in any way.

The newly single blonde appeared to be in a jovial mood as she stood on a balcony in her sleeveless cheetah-themed cocktail dress – that had a daring sheer neckline – paired with black stockings and heels.

She never tried to hide her arm as she worked the room with her Desperate Housewives actress pal.

The day before the beauty arrived at her hotel in Taormina with her arm covered by a sweater. Again, she seemed to be in good spirits as she talked to her publicist Robin Baum.

The rep did not return calls to MailOnline about the disappearing tattoo.

Why It’s Time for LeBron James and the Lakers to Part Ways After an Eight-Year Journey

0

The union spanned eight years.

Within this time, there was an abundance of love, the crowning of a championship, and locker rooms drenched in champagne. Million-dollar memories were made, moments so surreal they seemed spun from a Hollywood script, casting the quintessential leading man in a basketball epic.

But as we stand now?

It resembles a scene from “Marriage Story,” two weary individuals locked in a room, desperately trying to salvage something that has quietly slipped away.

The time has come for the Lakers and LeBron James to part ways.

Not because they hate each other. Not because the relationship failed completely. But because sometimes relationships survive past their expiration date when both sides are terrified of what comes next.

LeBron may have admitted as much after the Lakers were swept out of the Western Conference semifinals by the reigning champion Thunder on Monday.

“I don’t know what the future holds for me,” he said, saying the scary part out loud.

The Lakers already know what their future looks like.

It looks like Luka Doncic.

Doncic is 27 years old and entering the prime of his career. LeBron is 41 years old and entering the final chapter of the greatest career in NBA history. Those two timelines are not synchronized anymore. One clock is beginning. The other is ticking loudly in the background like a smoke detector with a dying battery.

The Lakers could have built around Doncic last year, but LeBron handcuffed them by opting into the final year of his contract with a salary of nearly $53 million.

The 2025-26 season felt like the Lakers had already moved on emotionally and were dating someone new, but they still hadn’t told their ex-wife to move out of the house.

It’s true that after Doncic went down with a hamstring injury April 2, LeBron led the team to a first-round upset over the Rockets. We appreciate that. But in the end, the outcome was still the same: a sweep and another season without a championship.

Both parties will come up with reasons to stay together.

The team went 16-2 when fully healthy and when LeBron selflessly became the third option. They could use that as a reason to stay together and “run it back.”

LeBron will point to the roots his family has in LA. That his son, Bronny, is still with the Lakers’ organization. He’s an hour plane ride from watching his other son, Bryce, play college basketball at the University of Arizona. His daughter, Zhuri, plays on a volleyball team here. His wife, Savannah, co-hosts a podcast here. The infrastructure of LeBron’s empire all resides in LA.

But divorce court is not about remembering the honeymoon.

It’s about accepting reality.

And the reality is that the Lakers have spent years reshaping themselves around LeBron. They’ve built rosters around his preferences, worked with his moods and made decisions based on his basketball worldview. They constantly tried to satisfy the demands of their superstar.

Sometimes it worked brilliantly like the trade for Anthony Davis and the 2020 championship in the bubble.

Sometimes it blew up in their faces like a scene from the “War of the Roses.” Remember the Russell Westbrook trade?

That’s the hidden cost of LeBron.

He’s not just a player. He’s an entire ecosystem.

And for eight years, the Lakers were married to him.

But now it’s time to move on with someone else.

It’s time to build around Doncic.

With over $100 million in salary coming off the books this summer, it’s time for the Lakers to have a clean slate and a fresh start.

They need to find athletic rim protectors and lob threats to pair with Doncic on the pick and roll. Surround him with long wing defenders and knockdown shooters who can spread the floor.

“Any team, including ours, would love to have LeBron James on their roster,” Lakers GM Rob Pelinka said during a season-ending news conference Tuesday. His comments were polite, respectful and diplomatic.

But public statements during divorces are always polite before the lawyers arrive.

Privately, they should thank him for the last eight years, for banner No. 17, and let him know that it’s not beneficial to the team for him to return. That you can’t pass the torch to Doncic while LeBron is still holding it. That even if LeBron signed a veteran minimum contract, Doncic and the franchise would still live in his shadow.

The Lakers and LeBron gave each other eight unforgettable years. A championship. Global relevance. And historic moments that will live on forever.

But all great relationships eventually arrive at the same terrifying question:

Are we staying together because we still belong together?

Or because we’re afraid to say goodbye?

And for the first time since LeBron arrived in the summer of 2018, the answer feels painfully obvious.

Portelli told the Herald Sun he was over the moon at becoming a first time father.

‘He was four days over. It’s an amazing, overwhelming experience,’ he said.

In September, Portelli hosted an elaborate gender reveal ahead of the birth of his first child.
