Bear Interrupts Anniversary Getaway by Visiting Tennessee Tea Shop and Climbing Onto Counter

0

What began as a simple anniversary escape for one couple in Gatlinburg turned into a memorable wildlife encounter when a curious bear transformed their tea shop visit into an unexpected adventure. Captured on video, the bear made its way into the store, sifting through items before leaping onto the counter, startling everyone present.

Victoria Puyol and Joshua Card were in Gatlinburg celebrating seven years together. While exploring, they made a stop at The Spice & Tea Exchange on a seemingly typical Friday. However, their visit quickly took a surprising twist when Card noticed the unanticipated bear near the shop’s entrance.

“There’s a bear,” Card recalled expressing as he processed the unusual sight.

Initially, Puyol was confounded by what she heard. It wasn’t until both Card and the store clerk reiterated their incredulity that she turned to see the bear firmly planted in the doorway.

Joshua Card first spotted the bear standing near the entrance of the tea shop before the animal ventured farther inside.

Joshua Card’s initial sighting of the bear at the shop’s entrance was just the beginning as the animal ventured further inside, leaving both him and Victoria Puyol with an anniversary story to remember. (Victoria Puyol and Joshua Card)

The couple recalled guidance to back away from bears, but as they stepped away, the bear ventured farther into the store. The clerk directed them behind the register, where they had access to an emergency exit.

The curious intruder appeared particularly interested in the shop’s inventory, tearing into a sweet-tea blend and investigating tea diffusers as a crowd gathered outside. An employee from a neighboring store sounded an air horn, the couple said, but it appeared to have little effect on the bear.

Card began recording as the bear approached the counter.

“Hey, what you doing there, buddy?” Card can be heard saying in the video.

The bear then turned and jumped onto the counter, prompting Card to step backward.

“He’s talking to this thing like it’s a puppy,” Puyol recalled. “It’s a bear. It’s not a puppy. It’s a bear.”

Card said he initially thought the animal might have been a “show bear” on a leash with a handler nearby because they were in such a populated area. He quickly realized it was a wild bear.

Card, a military veteran who also has experience as a lifeguard, said his background dealing with emergency situations helped shape his reaction. He described feeling uncertain about what the young animal was capable of and whether he should intervene or simply give it space.

“This didn’t really feel like an emergency,” Card said. “It felt unpredictable to me.”

Card said the bear appeared more curious than aggressive.

“He didn’t really seem threatened,” he said. “Even when he jumped up on the counter, I was like, okay, well, I’m going to take a step back.”

Puyol said she was more shocked than frightened.

“I wasn’t scared,” she said. “I was just shocked.”

“I wasn’t like, ‘Oh my God, it’s a bear, I’m going to die,'” she continued. “No, it was like, there’s a wild animal, like eight feet away from me.”

Adding to the irony, Puyol said she had repeatedly told Card before the trip that she hoped to see a bear during their anniversary getaway.

“Be careful what you wish for because I wanted to see a bear, not that up close and personal,” she said.

The clerk eventually told the couple about another exit through the second floor, but the bear suddenly ran out before they needed to use it. Card and the clerk then shut the door and waited to make sure it was safe before leaving.

Puyol estimated the entire encounter lasted roughly 10 to 15 minutes.

The couple said store employees told them the bear appeared to be a repeat visitor and had entered the business earlier in the week.

The shop also posted a photo of a bear earlier in the week with the caption, “This young bear came into our shop today, snagged some sugar and came back for more!”

Now that they made it out safely, the couple said the encounter made for an anniversary they will never forget.

“The trip has been filled with oddities, and so this just kind of … fuels that whole experience,” Card said.

Brooklyn Shooter Targets Dog, Misses Vulnerable Woman

0

In a shocking turn of events, Brooklyn police are on the trail of a dangerous gunman who unleashed chaos on a city street Wednesday afternoon. In the incident, a woman with developmental delays narrowly escaped harm, while her family’s cherished dog wasn’t as lucky, sustaining a gunshot wound.

Law enforcement officials report that the assailant fearlessly brandished a firearm in the clear light of day, aiming at an unnamed man but missing. Instead, the stray bullet struck the woman’s dog, which fortunately later underwent surgery to remove the bullet.

The traumatizing scene involved 64-year-old Teresa Pezzolla, who was taking her regular stroll with her dog when the unexpected violence erupted. Her nephew recounted to The Post, “Aunt Teresa was casually walking the dog towards 5th Avenue.”

He added, “This is part of her usual routine, just taking the dog around the block, when suddenly this young man appeared, shooting at someone else. Unfortunately, it was the dog that got hit instead.”

The NYPD states that the alarming act of gunfire occurred around 5:46 p.m., right in front of 218 31st Street in the area of Greenwood Heights.

“So I’m thankful that the bullet didn’t hit my aunt because I think it would have been a lot worse,” continue Pezzolla’s nephew.

While the sicko’s intended target escaped unharmed, the shooter’s errant bullet slammed into a seven-year-old Honey, a labradoodle.

Pezzolla, who is developmentally delayed, walked back to the home with the animal, and her sister quickly called an cab and got the pup to an emergency vet.

“My mother called in a cab right away, got the dog to an emergency room — and the doctors there were able to pull a 22 caliber right out of the dog,” Pezzolla’s nephew explained.

When he got home, he immediately asked Pezzolla where the harrowing attack occurred.

“I walked my aunt outside, and I told her, ‘show me exactly where this happened,’ and I had the two police officers follow me from behind and, you know, she was able to point out exactly where this happened,” he said.

Nearby police officers happened upon the scene and asked what’s going on.

“I started looking around 5th Avenue and that’s when two cops rolled up on me and asked me what was going on and I told them. And that’s when the cops jumped into action.”

Authorities were able to obtain surveillance footage from nearby cameras.

“I’ve been living in the neighborhood since I was a child,” the nephew explained.

“This is the first time anything like this has ever happened, a shooting in the area.”

“My aunt is very shaken up.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at  on X @NYPDTips.

Rebuild Leg Muscles at Home: 4 Kitchen-Counter Exercises That Outperform Gym Workouts for Seniors Over 65

0

Avoiding the gym in your golden years? Discover these four counter exercises for seniors as a more convenient alternative.

>

After turning 65, the prospect of a long gym session can feel daunting, particularly when the trip there saps more energy than the workout itself. The good news is you don’t need to leave home; your kitchen counter is an excellent starting point. Serving as a sturdy and familiar companion, it aids in safely strengthening your leg muscles with precision and control.

Rebuilding leg strength requires consistent practice, focusing on essential movements like squatting, hinging, stepping, and calf raises. The support of a counter allows you to perform these exercises with a light touch, enabling you to modify the depth and concentrate on perfecting your technique. This approach maintains the workout’s simplicity, avoiding any unnecessary complexity.

For many older adults, counter-supported exercises can enhance initial workout confidence. With the counter’s assistance, individuals can exert effort without apprehension. As repetitions become more seamless, you will likely notice your legs shouldering more of the load.

Incorporate these four kitchen counter exercises into your routine three to five times a week. Begin with two sets and gradually introduce a third once you feel comfortable with the regimen.

Counter-Supported Squat

The counter-supported squat is one of the best places to start when rebuilding leg muscle after 65. It trains the same basic pattern you use to sit, stand, and lower your body with control. The counter gives you balance support, which can help you get better reps and work through a comfortable range. Over time, stronger squats can make your legs feel more reliable during everyday movement.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, core.

How to Do It

  1. Stand facing a sturdy kitchen counter.
  2. Place both hands lightly on the counter.
  3. Set your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  4. Bend your knees and lower into a comfortable squat.
  5. Press through your feet to stand tall.
  6. Repeat with smooth control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps.

Best Variations: Smaller-range counter squats, slow-tempo counter squats, counter squats with a pause.

Form Tip: Use the counter for balance while your legs handle the work.

Counter-Supported Reverse Lunge

The counter-supported reverse lunge gives each leg focused work, which is important when rebuilding muscle after 65. One leg often feels stronger or steadier than the other, and this exercise helps you train both sides with better awareness. The backward step keeps the movement controlled while the front leg does most of the strengthening. It’s a smart way to build the thighs and glutes without needing a full gym setup.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, calves, core.

How to Do It

  1. Stand facing the counter with both hands resting lightly on it.
  2. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart.
  3. Step one foot back.
  4. Bend both knees to a comfortable depth.
  5. Press through your front foot to return to standing.
  6. Alternate sides or complete all reps on one side before switching.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 6 to 10 reps per side.

Best Variations: Step-back taps, smaller-range reverse lunges, supported split squats.

Form Tip: Keep your front foot planted as you return to standing.

Counter-Supported Good Morning

The counter-supported good morning trains the backside of your legs, which often needs more attention after 65. Stronger hamstrings and glutes help your legs feel more balanced and support how you bend, stand, and move throughout the day. This exercise also teaches the hips to contribute more, which gives the lower body a stronger base. The counter makes the hinge pattern easier to practice while you build confidence.

Muscles Trained: Hamstrings, glutes, lower back, core.

How to Do It

  1. Stand facing the counter with your hands resting lightly on it.
  2. Place your feet about hip-width apart.
  3. Soften your knees.
  4. Push your hips back as your torso leans forward.
  5. Stop when you feel tension through the back of your legs.
  6. Drive your hips forward to stand tall.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps.

Best Variations: Smaller-range good mornings, hands-on-counter hip hinges, banded good mornings.

Form Tip: Keep your spine long as your hips move back.

Counter-Supported Calf Raise

Counter-supported calf raises build the lower-leg strength that helps walking, balance, and push-off feel stronger. Calves can lose strength quietly, and people often notice it when stairs feel slower, or their stride feels less powerful. This exercise is simple enough to do often, and the counter lets you focus on getting a strong lift through the feet. It rounds out the routine by training the part of the leg many workouts skip.

Muscles Trained: Calves, ankles, feet.

How to Do It

  1. Stand facing the counter.
  2. Place both hands lightly on the counter.
  3. Set your feet about hip-width apart.
  4. Press through the balls of your feet.
  5. Lift your heels as high as you can.
  6. Lower your heels with control and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 12 to 20 reps.

Best Variations: Seated calf raises, slow-tempo calf raises, single-leg supported calf raises.

Form Tip: Lift through your big toe and second toe so your ankles stay aligned.

5 Morning Exercises That Ease Full-Body Stiffness in Under 10 Minutes After 60

How to Build More Leg Strength From the Counter

The counter works best when you treat it like a training station you can return to often. Leg muscle after 65 needs steady practice, and short home routines can make that easier to maintain. Start with movements that feel smooth, then add more reps, a slower pace, or an extra round as your legs get stronger. Keep the routine close to something you already do, like morning coffee or breakfast cleanup, so it becomes part of the day. The more familiar the setup feels, the easier it is to keep building.

  • Use a sturdy counter: Clear the surface and make sure your hands have a dry, secure place to rest.
  • Train through a comfortable range: Depth can improve over time as your legs feel stronger.
  • Make each rep count: Smooth lowering and strong standing will do more than rushing through the set.
  • Add walking on non-training days: Daily steps help support stamina while the counter routine builds strength.
  • Keep protein in your meals: Protein helps maintain the muscle you’re working to rebuild.
  • Progress gradually: Add reps, time, or another round once the exercises feel controlled.

First Mammal Contracts Bird Flu in Australia: New Frontline in the Battle Against Widespread Virus

0

In an alarming development for the nation’s wildlife, Australia has identified its inaugural case of bird flu in a mammal, signaling the virus’s relentless spread.

Authorities on Sunday confirmed that a long-nosed fur seal located in Beachport, South Australia, tested positive for the H5 strain of bird flu.

This marks the first confirmed occurrence of this virus in an Australian mammal, with suspicions that the infection was transmitted from wild birds.

Julie Collins, the Minister of Agriculture, acknowledged the situation as both distressing and anticipated.

“While this development is certainly troubling, it’s not entirely unexpected to observe infections in other wildlife species, especially marine mammals, in areas where wild birds show high rates of infection,” she remarked.

“Sadly, we also know that once the H5 bird flu is spreading in the natural environment, it is not possible to avoid significant losses.”

Chief executive of the Invasive Species Council Jack Gough said overseas mammal-to-mammal transmission had resulted in high fatality rates.

“We know from South America and Antarctica that mammal-to-mammal transmission among seals quickly led to high mortality rates, particularly among pups,” he said.

“We are still just at the early stages of this devastating virus and the bad news is going to keep coming for our wildlife as it spreads around the continent and between species.”

This follows an increase in bird fatalities since the virus was first detected on Australia’s shores in June.

South Australia has the highest number of confirmed cases, with 182 positive detections.

Victoria has recorded 86 cases, Western Australia 10, NSW 11, and Tasmania nine.

So far, no cases have been detected in an agricultural setting, and the health risk to humans remains low.

The public is urged to report sick-looking birds to authorities and not to approach or touch them.

Shocking Laptop Explosion on Flight: 5 Passengers Burned

0

Recently released audio from air traffic control has captured the harrowing incident when an American Airlines pilot reported a laptop igniting into flames aboard a crowded flight, which led to smoke engulfing the cabin and causing injuries to several passengers.

The incident occurred on American Airlines Flight 2398, which was en route from Atlanta to Dallas, carrying 133 passengers. About half an hour before landing, a passenger’s laptop began emitting smoke before igniting, escalating the scare mid-flight.

‘There’s a fire at the back of the cabin,’ the pilot hurriedly relayed to air traffic controllers, detailing the chaotic scene unfolding on the Airbus A321.

‘Flight attendants are currently attempting to extinguish it,’ he added in his urgent communication.

Shortly thereafter, the pilot provided another, more distressing, update on the situation.

‘I think we have about four to five passengers that were burned by the laptop,’ he said. ‘The laptop is contained about mid-aircraft.’

The dramatic incident sent smoke pouring through the cabin as passengers scrambled away from the burning computer and flight attendants raced to contain it.

Passenger Jessica Irgens, who was sitting just two rows away, told CBS News that the laptop began smoking before catching fire, quickly creating enough smoke that she ran toward the rear of the aircraft.

The owner of the computer placed the burning device in the aisle, Irgens said, while one or two fellow passengers who attempted to help suffered burns to their hands.

Flight attendants then managed to secure the smoldering laptop inside a special thermal containment bag within around five minutes.

Despite the pilot’s initial report that as many as five people may have suffered burns, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport said one passenger ultimately received medical treatment after the aircraft landed.

That person was treated and released at the scene. The aircraft landed safely at DFW at approximately 6:55pm.

Emergency personnel were waiting for Flight 2398 when it arrived, and the aircraft was able to taxi to its gate.

American Airlines praised the crew’s response to the potentially dangerous situation.

‘American Airlines flight 2398 landed safely at DFW after reports of smoke from a customer’s device during landing,’ the airline said.

‘We thank our crew for their professionalism and swift response to quickly contain the device.’

The FAA has now launched an investigation into the incident.

Laptops, cellphones, tablets and portable battery packs have become ubiquitous aboard commercial flights, but the powerful batteries inside them can, in rare circumstances, dangerously overheat.

The phenomenon is known as ‘thermal runaway.’

It can occur when a battery cell generates heat faster than it can dissipate it, potentially producing smoke, intense heat and fire.

‘Thermal runaway can occur without warning as a result of various factors, including if the battery is damaged, overheated, exposed to water, overcharged, or improperly packed,’ the FAA warns.

The danger has prompted regulators to impose strict rules surrounding lithium batteries aboard commercial aircraft.

Spare lithium batteries and power banks, for example, are required to remain in carry-on baggage rather than checked luggage so that a problem can be spotted and dealt with inside the cabin.

The FAA also restricts the size of lithium batteries passengers are permitted to carry because of the potential fire risk.

FAA figures show there has been 56 incidents involving lithium batteries producing smoke, fire or extreme heat aboard aircraft this year.

FBI Uncovers Chilling Plot: New York Woman Accused of Threatening State Capitol Explosion and Lawmaker Lives

0

In a dramatic turn of events, law enforcement officials have successfully intercepted a planned attack aimed at destroying critical documents and targeting state senators.

ALBANY, N.Y. — An alarming plot to bomb the New York state Capitol has been uncovered, with a local Albany woman at the center of the investigation. Prosecutors allege that she intended to murder lawmakers, driven by her belief that recent laws undermine Islamic principles. She is now facing federal charges of terrorism.

Officials revealed on Thursday that 35-year-old Jessica Bowie had been carefully monitored for over a month. During this period, she unknowingly engaged with a confidential informant masquerading as an ISIS supporter. The authorities’ timely intervention thwarted the attack, which was dangerously close to coinciding with the solemn anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Currently, no legal representation has been publicly linked to Bowie, who was taken into custody on Wednesday. Attempts to reach the Federal Public Defender’s office in Albany for a comment on Thursday were unsuccessful.

“These charges are profoundly unsettling,” commented John Sarcone, the first assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York. “It strikes at the heart of democracy, a threat we are determined to eradicate.”

Court documents said Bowie converted to Islam about five years ago. The affidavit of probable cause said FBI counterterrorism agents saw a number of online accounts linked back to Bowie in which she had expressed support for terrorism in posts starting around May.

Agents began monitoring those accounts and became aware starting around July 16 that Bowie wanted to carry out an attack on the state Capitol. She asked for lessons from at least one confidential informant on how to build an explosive device, made at least five trips to the Capitol grounds to plan where it might be most effective to set off an explosive, and scoped out security measures, all while in contact with multiple informants, authorities said.

Pictures of Bowie conducting reconnaissance at the Capitol and buying a list of bomb-making ingredients at a hardware store — including long nails for shrapnel — were included in the affidavit. She also arranged to buy a firearm and ammunition in order to fire the weapon at police or security if needed, authorities said.

“Ms. Bowie did not just plan to kill lawmakers; she wanted a complete disruption of our government,” said Craig L. Tremaroli, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Albany Field Office.

Tremaroli said she planned to flee the country after the attack but said she would be willing to return to launch more attacks on the White House or on Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

The affidavit also noted Bowie had considered making Albany City Hall a target but had settled on the Capitol, and specifically targeted state senators, because they make laws that she considered to be offensive to Islam. It’s unclear when she hoped to carry out the attack, given the legislature has been out of session since June.

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office released a statement Thursday, saying the state had taken steps earlier this year to strengthen security across state government, including at the Capitol, amid a rise nationally in political violence and threats against public officials.

“While there is no immediate threat at this time, we will continue working closely with our law enforcement partners to protect New Yorkers and keep our communities safe,” she wrote in the statement.

Urgent Warning: Wildland Firefighters Face Danger from Smoke Supplement Risks

SEATTLE – In a concerning update for those on the frontlines, fire and medical authorities have issued a red flag regarding a supplement offered to wildland firefighters in the Western United States who often face unprecedented exposure to hazardous chemicals while fighting massive blazes.

Glutathione, administered either intravenously or via an inhaler-like device known as a nebulizer, is at the center of this warning. Experts caution that the safety and efficacy of this supplement remain unproven, raising serious concerns about potential health risks if contamination occurs during production.

Alarmingly, two pharmacies had to recall glutathione in August after lab tests detected bacterial contamination. Reported side effects were severe enough to include fever, chills, and debilitating headaches, affecting those who had consumed the contaminated product.

“Given that glutathione lacks FDA approval as a drug, it is vital for consumers to exercise extreme caution concerning claims about its ability to treat or prevent illnesses,” pointed out a recent advisory from the International Association of Firefighters, a union that represents around 360,000 first responders.

This cautionary note was notably spurred by the supplement’s usage during the recent wildfires in Spokane, highlighting the ongoing need for vigilance and verified safety measures.

Glutathione was offered to firefighters during recent blazes that destroyed hundreds of buildings in and around Spokane, Washington. During morning briefings, medical unit leaders on scene from California urged crews to check out a tent where a nonprofit run by licensed naturopathic doctors offered the supplement.

A group of naturopaths called The Integrative Health Action Network had previously provided the supplement to firefighters during the January 2025 wildfires that tore through Los Angeles County. The group’s work with firefighters began following a 2017 blaze that destroyed thousands of homes in California’s wine country.

Though there is no evidence to back its use, some firefighters have said the supplement helped them feel better after breathing toxic smoke and they have urged California pharmacy officials not to restrict access.

The supplement’s promotion in Spokane prompted physicians and some members to contact the IAFF with concerns about health claims despite no research proving those claims or showing the supplement’s safety, said Sean DeCrane, IAFF assistant to the general president for health and safety. Some doctors have warned of adverse effects.

The IAFF also received reports saying some firefighters felt worse or became sick after getting treated. Medical treatments being marketed to firefighters should be evaluated and tested to make sure there are no unintended consequences, DeCrane said.

In response to the safety advisory, Jen Riegle, a naturopathic doctor and co-founder of The Integrative Health Action Network, said the organization recognizes the need for peer-reviewed research on whether glutathione can reduce chemical burdens in firefighters and is “actively exploring partnerships to that end.”

How inhaling wildfire smoke harms the body

More studies are showing the wide-ranging negative health impacts of inhaling wildfire smoke, which is especially toxic when blazes tear through urban areas and burn up household appliances, batteries and chemicals. Tens of thousands of people die annually in the U.S. from long-term impacts of wildfire smoke.

Firefighters work in extreme conditions that make it impractical to use a respirator with an oxygen tank. That means they are exposed to a “slew of chemicals” that have short and long-term impacts on their health, DeCrane said.

Pasadena Fire Captain Matt Caffey, also a paramedic for 28 years, helped fight last year’s Eaton fire in Southern California and said the smoke exposure from burning neighborhoods brings on coughing, vomiting and brain fog.

“You can’t remember things. You’re just so behind the eight ball. You can’t catch up. You’re not recovering,” he said.

Caffey is among the firefighters who say glutathione helps, and he urged Integrative Health Action Network providers to come to Spokane. The California Board of Pharmacy in 2025 reversed course on regulations that would have made the supplement more difficult to acquire after pushback from some firefighters.

Experts say health claims are not backed by evidence

Experts warn anecdotal claims of relief are not proof.

Such claims are “interesting and provocative and deserve further study,” said Dr. Cora Sack, a pulmonary specialist with expertise in environmental and occupational lung disease at the University of Washington School of Medicine. But “we lack clinical evidence of its efficacy.”

Glutathione is an antioxidant made primarily in the liver that neutralizes other unstable molecules that attack the body and cause cellular damage. Wildfire smoke creates oxidative stress in the body, and there is an “interesting biological plausibility” to think antioxidants could impact that, Sack said. But she does not endorse glutathione’s use without clear evidence.

Taking glutathione through a nebulizer may constrict the airways of people who have asthma or chronic lung conditions. Glutathione is processed in sterile compounding pharmacies, and there have been cases of people getting poisoned due to contamination at these facilities, Sack said.

Injecting a contaminated product “could cause significant medical events including fevers, hypotension, inflammatory reactions, anaphylactic shock and death,” according to the recent pharmacy recalls.

Luke Montrose, a professor at Colorado State University whose research focuses in part on the impact of wildfire smoke on disease risk, said glutathione has anti-inflammatory properties.

“But because it hasn’t been studied, I’m hesitant,” he said.

Authorities in Kentucky have discovered a home in such appalling condition that it harbored black mold and deceased insects in the refrigerator. One of the residents admitted, “I’m embarrassed, it’s bad,” highlighting the severity of the situation.

The residents, identified as Timothy MacDonald and Lana MacDonald, are facing second-degree criminal abuse charges, according to records from the Pike County jail. At present, they do not appear to be in custody at the Pike County Detention Center.

The incident unfolded on the evening of Tuesday, August 18, when the Kentucky State Police responded to a call on Regina Belcher Highway in Pike County. This location is situated in the southeastern part of the state.

Accompanied by state troopers, a Department for Community Based Services employee arrived at the scene around 5:30 p.m. to conduct a welfare check, as reported by the regional CBS affiliate WYMT.

Authorities knocked on the door and could apparently hear small children and a dog inside, but no one answered.

An officer then knocked on a window, and a girl cracked the front door open. The child reportedly said their mother was busy working in her bedroom and her father was not home. Around this time, Timothy MacDonald showed up on an ATV.

Troopers are said to have learned that the man had six active warrants in the county, and the woman had four. Lana MacDonald left the home but allegedly would not let troopers inside, saying, “if she was going to jail she was not letting [them] inside.”

Timothy MacDonald eventually told his oldest daughter to let them in, according to the local outlet. Authorities found three children — ages 16, 11, and 5 — inside. Only one of the children was wearing a T-shirt, law enforcement said.

The house was apparently in horrible condition. When troopers went into the kitchen and opened the fridge, they said they found it covered in black mold and filled with dead bugs.

The parents were then arrested, and the children were placed into protective custody.

30-Year-Old Woman Posing as Child Convicted of Fraud

0

A Brazilian woman has been found guilty of deceiving a foster family into believing she was a child, residing with them for over a year under this pretense, authorities confirmed this week.

Identified as Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, the 37-year-old was convicted of both fraud and assuming a false identity on Thursday. This verdict was disclosed in a translated announcement from Brazil’s Court of Justice of Santa Catarina.

Oliveira lived with the unsuspecting family as their daughter for 14 months. Her ruse fell apart after the family discovered she falsely claimed to be escaping from abuse.

Subsequently, Oliveira confessed to fabricating her age and identity, as confirmed by the court.

Oliveira had been living falsely as a child for 15 years in an “elaborate fraud,” the Washington Post reported, using a high-pitched, childlike voice and even telling people she had been forced to get hormones to make her look older.

She was sentenced to one year, six months and 10 days in prison, along with four months and 18 days of detention.

One of her lawyers, Lúcio Sousa, said that Oliveira’s scheme was how she “survived.”

“She admits that she invented an identity,” Sousa said before the verdict, according to the Post. “It was the way she found to survive. But she has been a vulnerable person for more than 20 years.

“She has lived on the streets, and there has been no allegation that she obtained any financial advantage, or committed robbery or theft, which, in theory, means the elements of fraud have not been established.”

Oliveira said she never meant to hurt anyone.

“Of course, I deceived people, I lied,” she said, according to police, the Post reported. “But I didn’t intend to scam anyone.”

She said she wanted to experience the love she never got as a child.

“There was a certain void in me, a need to have that kind of care, so I always sought it out,” she said.

After the verdict, Sousa said in a statement on Instagram, they would “pursue all appropriate legal measures and appeals before the higher courts.”

JJ Bleday’s Homer Powers Reds to Dominant Victory

0

JJ Bleday, enjoying arguably the peak performance of his baseball career, was considered a valuable trade asset as the August 3rd deadline loomed.

The Cincinnati Reds, however, decided to hold onto him, a move that proved fruitful on Saturday night.

The 28-year-old left fielder accomplished the rare feat of hitting for the cycle in just six innings, guiding the Reds to an impressive 11-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Batting third in the lineup, Bleday initiated the scoring spree with a double in the first inning, driving in Elly De La Cruz, who had himself started the game with a double.

Returning to the batter’s box in the third inning, Bleday tripled, bringing home the promising rookie Sal Stewart, and completing the cycle’s most challenging element. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Stephenson, another key player retained at the deadline despite his contract nearing its expiration.

Now batting with one out in the fourth and De La Cruz and Stewart aboard, Bleday grounded a single through the right side to load the bases.

Clearly unsatisfied with his three hits and two RBIs in what was at that point was already a blowout, Bleday sent the first pitch of the sixth inning for a solo home run that barely scraped over the wall in right to complete the eighth cycle in franchise history and fourth in the MLB this season.

Though Bleday has been one of the Reds’ top sluggers this season, he found his career hanging in the balance just eight months ago, when the AL West bottom-feeding A’s declined to tender him a contract in the offseason.

Cincinnati took a chance on a one-year, $1.4 million deal, a contract that he has more than lived up to.

Elly De La Cruz nearly joined Bleday in the history books on Saturday, too.

De La Cruz, who went 4-for-6, finished a triple shy of his second career cycle — and it wouldn’t have been too much a surprise if the speedster, who has 29 three-baggers over his four-year career, completed the task. If it happened, the duo would have been the first teammates in MLB history to hit for the cycle in the same game.

He ended his night with a solo home run, double and two singles.

The sixth-inning homer was Bleday’s 21st of the season, second on the team behind Stewart. He leads the Reds in walks and is third in RBIs despite playing the first month of the season in Triple-A.

Much of Bleday’s impact has been for naught, though, as the Reds find themselves last in the division and far out of even a wild card spot. Cincinnati has struggled with rotation injuries and has been, apart from the trio at the top of the lineup, in the dumps on offense.
