The biological parents of a baby born with a serious heart defect have asked a judge to bring their continuing legal dispute with his surrogate to an end.

California couple Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed accused McKenna West, who gave birth to their son, of seeking to profit from the media attention surrounding the case, according to TMZ.

The couple alleged that West, 28, continued pursuing the court case despite previously indicating that she would withdraw it, the outlet reported.

Gilkar and Ahmed also claimed that West was still seeking custody of their son, whom they named Rumi.

Several state courts have already rejected West’s attempts to participate in the child’s medical treatment, however.

West has said that Ahmed and Gilkar pressured her for weeks to terminate the pregnancy after doctors diagnosed the baby with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

Gilkar and Ahmed, in contrast, alleged that West later reversed her position, stopped communicating with them and continued the pregnancy against their wishes.

West gave birth to the boy on August 12 in Dallas, Texas, where she has called him Gabriel rather than Rumi. Most abortions are banned in the state.

West entered into the surrogacy agreement with Gilkar and Ahmed in August 2025 through Worldwide Surrogacy Specialists LLC.

The contract contained a provision requiring her to terminate the pregnancy if an “abnormality” was detected.

According to Alaska court documents cited by the Associated Press, the couple said West agreed to end the pregnancy after the diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

One legal filing stated that it was “undisputed that West initially agreed and that she herself made the initial appointment,” the AP reported.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome occurs when one side of the heart is severely underdeveloped, disrupting normal blood flow. Symptoms can include gray or blue-tinged skin, breathing difficulties, skin rashes and a weak pulse.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the condition can be managed with a series of surgeries soon after birth. The procedures do not cure the defect, but they can help improve the heart’s ability to function.

About 925 babies are born with the condition in the United States each year. Without treatment, affected infants may die within days or weeks.

Court filings also said the couple wanted West to give birth in California, where the baby could begin cardiac treatment on the West Coast.

The parents argued that West was “harming” the child by “requiring him to be born in Texas, away from his parents and the specialized cardiac team in Los Angeles that will provide his lifelong care,” the AP reported.

West eventually discovered a hospital in Texas that had a 100 percent success rate in recent years with the first of three surgeries the baby would require.

She was also put in touch with Lila Rose, the founder and president of anti-abortion group Live Action, who assured West that she would help her get to Texas.

Days before she gave birth, Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said his office was intervening to ‘protect baby Gabriel’s life’ by notifying UT Southwestern Medical Center and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas of legal obligations to provide life-saving care.

Gilkar and Ahmed have accused West of contracting with special interest groups for money and legal representation, per TMZ.

The baby boy underwent a major heart surgery known as the Norwood procedure after being born.

On September 2, Texas District Court Judge Ashley Wysocki ruled against West’s attempt to gain sole conservatorship of the child.

The Superior Court of California for Los Angeles County had already recognized Gilkar and Ahmed as his legal parents in June.

Plus, the Texas Supreme Court blocked her attempt to prevent the biological parents from taking the baby to a hospital in LA, where they live.

West took her fight up to the Supreme Court but she was denied by Justice Elena Kagan on September 22.

Kagan did not detail the legal reasoning, which is typical in emergency appeals. She made the decision because she handles appeals of cases out of California.

‘We are grateful that Rumi can continue receiving the treatment he needs to survive, and that he will not be stripped away from his parents, who are ensuring their child receives top-notch medical care,’ Ahmed and Gilkar’s legal team told the Daily Mail then.

‘Ms. West’s legal filings across three states, numerous courts of appeals, and now the US Supreme Court have sought to undermine Rumi’s parents’ right to provide him with the care he needs,’ the statement continued. ‘Those efforts have been rejected by every single court.’

Photos have shown the tiny boy covered in tubes and medical equipment with a long scar running down his chest.

The Daily Mail has reached out to West’s attorney, Lincoln Davis Wilson, and the couple’s legal team for comment.

A devoted Sydney father is fighting for his life in a Colombian hospital after reportedly being kidnapped, tortured and stabbed more than 25 times following a music festival.

Frank Stephen Ramirez had travelled to Medellín to attend the EDC music festival, but the trip soon became a “horrific nightmare”, according to an online fundraiser set up on his behalf.

Fundraiser organisers said Mr Ramirez was targeted after leaving the event, forced into a car and repeatedly stabbed.

They said he suffered eight wounds to his right thigh and a further six to his left thigh.

Eyewitnesses reportedly saw the attackers torture Mr Ramirez as they tried to force him to hand over as much money as possible.

“When they were done, they kicked him out of a moving car and left him in the street to die like he was nothing,” the GoFundMe page said.

Colombian police reportedly found Mr Ramirez and rushed him to a hospital in Medellín, where he remains as he begins what is expected to be a long recovery.

“By a miracle, the police found him just in time,” the fundraiser said.

“He was rushed directly to a hospital in Medellín, where he remains, fighting for his life and beginning the long, painful process of recovery.”

Mr Ramirez’s family said he sustained horrific injuries and was left alone in a foreign country, thousands of kilometres from his wife and son in Sydney.

They are urgently raising money to fly his wife to Colombia, pay his growing medical bills and support the family while he is unable to work.

“Frank is alone, terrified, and in critical condition,” organisers said.

“His wife’s presence is not just a comfort, it is essential for his will to fight and for his recovery.”

Funds raised will also go towards Mr Ramirez’s medical treatment and provide financial support for his family during what could be a lengthy recovery that is expected to leave him unable to work.

The fundraiser described Mr Ramirez as a devoted father, loving husband and cherished friend who had worked hard to build a life for his family in Sydney.

“Frank did not deserve this,” organisers said.

“He went to Colombia with nothing but positive energy to enjoy an event he loved. He has been robbed not just of his money, but of his safety, his health, and his peace of mind.”

Donald Trump shared a disturbing video showing the fatal tiger attack involving a 24-year-old UK man on his Truth Social account.

William Chapman died on Saturday after entering a big-cat enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, where he was attacked by Altai, a Siberian tiger.

The president, who regularly shares memes and viral clips on Truth Social, accompanied the footage with a warning to Americans.

“Don’t ever mess with nature! President DJT,” he wrote.

Trump then shared several other videos appearing to show wild animals attacking people after escaping from their enclosures.

Later that evening, he posted an AI-generated video depicting a tiger trying to attack him. The digital version of Trump eventually chased the animal away before befriending it, while “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” played in the background.

One of the clips shows a lion breaking out of a zoo enclosure in front of a horrified janitor, followed by footage of several lions attacking a zookeeper.

The president did not add captions to the other videos, which appeared on his feed while he was travelling to a rally in Alaska on Tuesday.

In the days before the incident, Chapman had posted a series of unusual images and videos on social media before climbing into the tiger enclosure on Saturday.

The distressing footage shows him entering the enclosure and approaching a lone tiger resting on a raised wooden platform.

He was attacked by the animal just minutes later and died at the scene.

Shortly before the attack, Chapman was reportedly alone and dancing while listening to music through headphones. He had also asked visitors to take a photograph of him with the tiger.

He is believed to have entered the enclosure, where he began “praying and bowing” on all fours in front of the animal.

As the tiger attacked, Chapman screamed “stop” several times and appeared to make the Makaton sign for “bad.”

Witnesses said he told the tiger to “stop being naughty” and appeared to be “in a trance” and “not attached to reality.”

Police and ambulance crews rushed to the park as staff evacuated visitors, but Chapman was pronounced dead.

Distressing footage later circulated on social media, appearing to show the tiger pawing at and playing with the man.

Parkgoers said they then saw it jump onto his neck.

Visitors were rapidly evacuated and emergency services, including an air ambulance, rushed to the scene, but the man was confirmed to have died. 

Chapman’s family are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.

Zookeepers were said to have done ‘everything they could’ to drive tiger Altai off, firing five loud acoustic gun blasts in attempts to scare him. 

Two ambulances and a helicopter rushed to the park at 1.35pm, with a ‘black screen’ erected around the enclosure as lifesaving treatment was attempted.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which remains closed, confirmed that Altai will not be euthanized in the wake of the incident.

The licensing authority for Yorkshire Wildlife Park, City of Doncaster Council, has now launched a health and safety investigation into the man’s death. 

Dan Swaine, executive director of place at City of Doncaster Council, said: ‘As the relevant licensing authority for the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, I can confirm that, in line with our statutory duties, the council has launched a health and safety investigation.

‘We are also working with multiple agencies, including the police and health agencies, and are supporting the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in response to the incident.

‘At this time, we won’t be commenting further on the individual or the investigation and we ask that the privacy of those involved is respected at this difficult time.’

Yorkshire Wildlife Park opened in 2009, with the Land of the Tigers attraction opening in 2011.

The attraction is a purpose-built, two-acre reserve for Amur tigers, an endangered subspecies with around 500 left in the wild.

Photos of the enclosure on the park’s website show a high walkway for visitors and fencing above the section where the tigers can roam.

Breaking Bad actor RJ Mitte had a deep affection for Australia, returning to the country regularly for filming opportunities and personal trips.

The American star, who died at his Texas home on Monday aged 34, filmed the comedy-drama Standing Up For Sunny in Sydney’s famous beachside suburb of Bondi in 2018.

Directed by Steve Vidler, the film featured Mitte alongside Australian performers Philippa Northeast, Sam Reid and Matt Nable. His character becomes romantically involved with a Sydney local during the story.

Mitte spoke enthusiastically about spending several months in Sydney for the production, telling a local publication that he felt as though he was “living the dream.”

“I love it. Australia’s a great country. I’m a really big fan of Illawarra; I think it’s such an amazing environment – I love Sydney and Wollongong,” Mitte told Rough Cut magazine.

“I’ve spent time in Adelaide, in Melbourne and in a few other places, and it’s really a great community. Working in the film industry there was a pleasure.”

The Mississippi-born actor also praised Australia’s performers, having worked with stars including Luke Hemsworth, Barry Humphries and Ella Scott Lynch during his career.

“I mean, Australian actors have been invading American cinema. The level of professionalism in Australia is apparent. The quality of work that comes out is at such a high level,” he said.

“It really is remarkable to see. And Steve Vidler has such a great demeanour with how he presents everything – it’s really special.”

“It really was a surreal experience as a whole. I was living the Australian dream, you know? I was working in Newtown, living in Bondi – that’s the dream for an actor, isn’t it? To work in the hipster capital of Sydney and live by Bondi Beach.”

Before production began in December 2017, Mitte was frequently seen making the most of his time at Bondi Beach.

Speaking to Australia’s Cerebral Palsy Alliance, he said his love of the country had brought him back several times.

“It’s been great. This is my fifth time in Australia, it’s been great, always a pleasure to be here,” Mitte said.

In Standing Up For Sunny, Mitte played an American living in Sydney who falls for Philippa Northeast’s character from Home and Away. The pair connect through their shared passion for stand-up comedy.

On Tuesday, Northeast remembered her late co-star on social media, posting photos of the pair enjoying time together alongside the message: “Rest in Peace, you beautiful man.”

Mitte appeared in 56 episodes of Breaking Bad between 2008 and 2013, playing Walter White’s son. Bryan Cranston portrayed the character, a terminally ill high school chemistry teacher who goes on to build a methamphetamine empire.

In 2019, six years after Breaking Bad, Mitte admitted he still missed being a part of the show’s cast.

‘That’s going to follow me ’til the day I die,’ he told The Sydney Morning Herald as he reflected on his time on the hit AMC series.

The role took Mitte’s career to a whole new level and ‘opened a lot of doors’ for him, allowing him to pursue passion projects, such as starring alongside Luke Hemsworth in the 2018 movie River Runs Red.

A county official confirmed to TMZ that Mitte, known for playing Walter White Jr on the hit AMC show from 2008 to 2013, died on Monday in Texas – and that a death investigation is ongoing.

It was later confirmed Mitte had died by suicide.

Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP) when he was three, and he went on to advocate for actors and those working in the entertainment industry with disabilities.

CP is a group of disorders that affect movement, posture and balance due to abnormal brain development or damage.

Symptoms range from muscle stiffness and poor motor control to difficulties with balance and coordination.

Mitte’s representative told TMZ Monday: ‘It is with profound sadness we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte.

‘RJ Mitte was best known for his role as Walter “Flynn” White Jr on AMC’s critically acclaimed, award-winning series Breaking Bad.

‘Drawing from his own experience living with cerebral palsy, Mitte brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion.

‘Beyond entertaining friends and family around the world, he served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s.’
