Courageous Lifeguard Teen Saves 10-Year-Old from Drowning

0

In a gripping tale from Santa Cruz, California, a 10-year-old boy who faced the terrifying force of nature’s waves is recounting the astonishing events that led to his rescue. This near-tragedy has since fostered a remarkable bond between his family and the teenage lifesaver who heroically intervened.

Nathaniel Rai, the young survivor, recently shared with News Media his firsthand experience of the incident. He recounted losing consciousness and ceasing to breathe, just as 16-year-old state lifeguard Ryder Williams managed a daring save amidst the tumultuous waters. Their dramatic and life-affirming rescue was captured in a video that quickly went viral. Once ashore, Nathaniel began to cough up sand, signaling his terrifying experience was finally over.

“Just another couple of seconds in those treacherous waters and Nathaniel would have been swept another 15 to 20 feet away,” explained Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai. He vividly described how his son had been on the brink of disaster, where retrieval would have been almost impossible, underscoring the peril of the situation.

Now an ardent admirer of the young lifeguard, Sumit expressed deep gratitude towards Ryder, who is seen as a hero by both families. The White House has reached out to honor this bravery, an accolade Sumit wholly endorses, considering Ryder an indispensable part of their extended family.

According to the Rai family, the terrifying ordeal unfolded during what was supposed to be a relaxing beach vacation from Dallas with Nathaniel, his mother, Annam, and his 8-year-old sister.

Nathaniel said he was at the shallow end and had no intention of going deeper when a massive wave suddenly crashed over him.

“I started screaming for help,” Nathaniel said. “I think I saw the lifeguard and then passed out.”

Sumit said Ryder then swooped in with extreme determination, maintaining a firm grip on Nathaniel throughout the rescue, knowing that even a momentary loss of control could have sent the boy farther out into the dangerous surf.

“He was limp and unconscious in the water at that time when Ryder was holding him, which is really difficult to do, because he’s carrying about 100 pounds of essentially dead weight through that current and those water forces,” Sumit added.

By the time Nathaniel was brought back to the beach, he had regained consciousness and was breathing again, but he was coughing up sand that had entered his lungs. Emergency personnel evaluated him and warned the family about “secondary drowning,” potentially life-threatening complications that can develop hours after a drowning event.

Sumit said he was in Dallas when he learned what happened, but the viral video of the rescue added another layer of shock to the frightening ordeal.

“It was terrifying,” he said. “When you look at that, you look at him submerged under the water, you look at the water conditions, the rip tides, the rip currents, the under toes, the 10-foot waves. I mean those are deadly water conditions.”

The father said he remains deeply grateful for Ryder’s courage and determination, adding that he has become the teenager’s biggest supporter, especially after President Donald Trump publicly suggested honoring him for his heroic efforts.

“I’m a fan of every single medal, award, honor, or recognition that he can get,” Sumit said. “I’m 1 billion percent behind it. I am by far his biggest fan and so I’d love to be there and advocate for him and support him.”

After Nathaniel returned to Texas, the two families have reportedly developed a close bond, with Sumit saying Ryder and his family now feel like an extension of his own.

Sumit reportedly connected with Ryder’s father, Shane, for a lengthy phone call, and the two have remained in daily contact.

Both parents have also discussed attending a UFC fight together after discovering their shared passion for UFC and MMA. Nathaniel has trained in MMA since he was 4 years old and is a Jiu-Jitsu champion at the US Open Jiu-Jitsu World League.

“He liked UFC fights, like me and my dad and his dad,” Nathaniel said.

“One of the things we’re planning to do is all go to a fight together and meet up for that. So the four of us will go,” his dad added.

According to Sumit, Ryder’s father, Shane, is a retired firefighter, while Ryder hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps and become one.

Coincidentally, Sumit runs Cancer Check Labs, a charity and business that screens firefighters for cancer risks associated with their profession.

Nathaniel has also been involved with the organization for several years, participating in lab work, exhibitions and even conferences, his father said.

“There were just multiple areas that we were connecting,” Summit said. “I think that’s a bond that we’re going to have for the rest of our lives. I think of them like an extended family at this point. Even I haven’t even met them, which is kind of surreal. I’m looking forward to meeting them soon.”

Nathaniel, who is preparing to enter sixth grade, said he is happy to be back in Dallas spending the rest of the summer with his father. In his downtime, he enjoys playing chess, watching movies and playing board games like Monopoly with his dad.

Perez Hilton Livestream Sparks Major TikTok Controversy

0

TikTok is under fire for not swiftly removing alarming content uploaded by Perez Hilton, which allegedly showed him engaging in self-harm during a live stream.

The well-known US celebrity blogger was taken to a medical facility in Miami after police received numerous calls from worried fans about his live broadcast actions.

Reports suggest the distressing video was visible for 30 minutes before it was eventually removed. Following the incident, Hilton’s TikTok account has been suspended.

Although the Daily Mail will not release the footage, clips allegedly exhibited Hilton with blood on him, holding a knife.

Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded swiftly, rushing to the 48-year-old’s home before he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

People have now criticised TikTok for allowing the footage to be aired – and warned of the potentially harmful effect on viewers, including youngsters using the video platform.

Bertie Aspinall, an advisor to the UK Government on the Online Safety Act, today told the Daily Mail: ‘This is yet another example of extremely harmful content being broadcast to children.

‘We know that livestreams are workarounds for blocking content, and yet Kick, TikTok, Instagram etc all continue to promote it.

Mr Aspinall is co-founder of SafetyMode.com, an app aimed at helping parents supervise and manage what their children see online.

He said of TikTok: ‘Many of our users are now abstaining from it entirely.

‘This is a great example of how you need to be able to block content in live time. Like we do.

‘Content like this has no place at all, not just online, but in society and not only is this very sad for the family and individual involved, but it could be the start of another worrying trend that kids should never see.’

One X user wrote: ‘Genuinely think TikTok should be held liable in some way for allowing that Perez Hilton feed to last 30 minutes. Absolutely insane.’

Another noted that the platform ‘allowed for many people, including children to come across a live where a man was going through a mental health crisis.’

‘Check on the people you love’, they added.

After last night’s footage was widely shared, Miami police officers spoke with family members on the scene and confirmed Hilton was alone inside before making the decision to ‘tactically disengage’ while monitoring the situation.

Hours later, authorities announced Hilton had been ‘safely recovered and transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to a local hospital, where he is receiving medical attention’.

Meanwhile, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Crisis Response Unit and Licensed Mental Health Professionals remained at the scene ‘providing support and resources to the individual’s family’.

Hilton was alone at his home at the time the video was filmed, deputies have said.

He is a father to three children, who were born via surrogacy. His eldest son was born in 2013, followed by two daughters in 2015 and 2017.

The Daily Mail has contacted Hilton’s representatives for comment, as well as TikTok.

Hilton’s representatives, Golden Artists Entertainment co-CEOs Dante Rusciolelli and Rebekah Kochan, told TMZ in a statement: ‘We are aware of the concerning content circulating online involving our client, Perez Hilton.

‘At this time, we have not been able to make direct contact with him, despite our ongoing efforts to reach him.

‘Our primary concern is Perez’s health and well-being, as well as the well-being of his family. Until we have confirmed information, we will not speculate or comment further.

‘We appreciate everyone’s concern and ask that his privacy be respected during this time.’

In the meantime, celebrity friends and fans of the blogger – born Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr – have taken to social media to send him messages, begging for him to seek medical help.

‘The Perez Hilton video is so upsetting,’ wrote Trisha Paytas. ‘I hope he’s OK. I hope his children are OK.

‘Crashing out on the internet, whether it’s fake or real – is a cry for help.’

Jessica Rosado, a singer and the host of Las Vegas Morning Blend, also posted a statement to her Instagram page.

She wrote: ‘As someone who knows Perez personally, I find myself at a loss for words.

‘I know the move to Miami hasn’t been an easy one, but never could I ever have imagined something as dark and deeply disturbing as this.

‘He is clearly in distress, and as someone who is also in media, I’m not rushing to discuss things I don’t have all the facts on. ‘I’m waiting to hear more from trusted sources.’

In the meantime, Rosado said her ‘love pours out to him and his entire family.’

Celebrity friends and fans of the blogger – born Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr. – took to social media to send him messages, begging for him to seek medical help

‘Thank you to everyone who has reached out with kind words and concern,’ the television host added.

‘Whether you are close with someone or not, please remember to move with empathy and approach others with the utmost care.’

Former politician George Santos wrote on X: ‘Please pray for Perez Hilton folks. He needs the power of prayer and the strength of our Lord and Savior.’

Hilton revealed in March he had just emerged from a 21-day hospital stint as he battled sepsis – a result, he said, of taking flu medication on an empty stomach that triggered further health problems.

He underwent two surgeries at the Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas.

During his recovery the following month, Hilton wrote of feeling ‘like I should be scared right now, but I’m not. I definitely am worried, though. God show me the way!’

The columnist continued on April 8: ‘Perez Hilton is GOING THROUGH IT right now. He asks for prayers and for Christ to intervene – sooner [rather] than later.’

Hilton later told the Daily Mail how he found God during his recovery.

He said: ‘It was God presenting Himself to me, and then doing something that I could only describe as a miracle to heal me. I was still unwell and then God did something.’

He also said that his professed exchange with God allowed him to change his mindset about his 22-year career.

Hilton had come under fire over the years for his controversial behaviour – including outing gay celebrities and giving certain A-listers nicknames.

He admitted that he had ‘made a lot of mistakes in the past which are very public’, adding: ‘Which I own. Which I regret, which I have deep shame for, which I’ve apologised for repeatedly, publicly as well as privately.’

But, he added, ‘to have this experience with God and to know that God loves me, and God forgives me, it was very healing, because I then forgave myself’.

Hilton also noted he harbored guilt over ‘all of the mistakes – not even mistakes, they were awful decisions that I made’ in his ‘enfant terrible phase’ as a celebrity blogger, when he ‘knew what I was doing was wrong and I didn’t care’.

He added: ‘It’s like if you’re a drug addict, and you’re stealing from your parents’ money to buy drugs.

‘You know what you’re doing is wrong, and you don’t care. You just want that hit. And that was truly what I was doing.’

For Hilton, the ‘most powerful drug’ was the ‘attention’ he garnered as an online gadfly, ‘and I didn’t care who I hurt in the process’.

Still, his ‘experience with God’ did not inspire a total career change.

He told of responding to people asking whether he would consider changing professions with: ‘No, because I’m not doing gossip. I do celebrity journalism.’

Australia’s Counter-Terror Police Initiate Historic Probe Following Devastating Arson Attack

0

A Melbourne defense firm has become the focus of a terrorism investigation after an arson attack believed to be motivated by pro-Palestinian sentiments. Counter-terror police are delving into the perpetrators’ motives.

In the early hours of July 5, Lovitt Technologies, a machining manufacturer, was targeted by arsonists who set three vehicles ablaze and defaced a building with graffiti.

The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism team (JCTT), which includes Australian Federal Police (AFP), Victoria Police, and ASIO, has shared images of the alleged criminals. They are investigating whether the attack was carried out by “far-left activists with anarchist and revolutionary ideologies.”

The group reportedly targeted the company due to its connections with the defense force supply chain. They claimed responsibility in an online video where they also provided guidance for executing similar attacks.

The JCTT explained that the suspects “outlined a number of grievances in support of Palestine,” alleging that they aimed at Lovitt Technologies because of its perceived role in the broader Australian Defence Force supply network.

Images released by the AFP show a suspect wearing all black clothing, standing in front of a Palestinian flag. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags are also displayed in the foreground.

In 2023, Lovitt secured a $1.5 million grant to continue work on the global Joint Strike Fighter program — a US-led F35 fighter jet construction program of which Israel is a key recipient.

The JCCT has confirmed to SBS News that the terror investigation, known as Operation Braehead, is the first to specifically target pro-Palestinian activism in Australia since the October 7 attacks. The charges carry a life sentence as a maximum penalty.

“We cannot overstate the seriousness of this criminality and the AFP, together with our partners, will not tolerate acts of terror motivated by extremist ideologies aiming to cause fear and anguish in our community,” AFP detective superintendent Anthony Hall said in a statement.

“At any time, we could be knocking on the door of the accused group. We know this is making some in the group anxious — and it should, because we are determined to bring them before the courts.”

Victoria Police detective acting superintendent Anthony Wheatfill said companies and employees “have the right to go about their daily business safely and securely.”

“That anyone would use such violent and dangerous methods to express a political or social viewpoint is unacceptable.”

Authorities have urged drivers in the area with potential dashcam footage and others with knowledge of the offenders to come forward.

In June, ASIO director-general Mike Burgess singled out arson and vandalism attacks on firms believed to be linked to Israel.

An aerial view of a warehouse. A car and two people clad in black clothing are on the ground.

“I recognise that criticism of the government of Israel is not of itself antisemitic, but some of the threatening statements made by the perpetrators go well beyond political protest or commentary,” he said at the organisation’s annual threat assessment.

Defence Minister Richard Marles has repeatedly denied claims Australia is exporting weapons to Israel, describing the supply of F35 components as a “separate issue” comprising supply chains organised by US weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin, the Joint Strike Fighter’s prime contractor.

The Victorian JCTT is also probing the 2024 antisemitic attack on the Adass Synagogue, with a third man charged in June.

First Amendment Demands Overturn of Shiloh Hendrix Conviction

0

In Minnesota, a legal drama unfolds involving a mother who became unexpectedly infamous when a filmed altercation painted her in a controversial light. Shiloh Hendrix now faces the reality of her actions, a marked misdemeanor on her record following an incident fueled by a racial epithet during a playground dispute. Her conviction leans heavily on the seldom-invoked ‘fighting words’ exception to the First Amendment—a doctrine that many consider antiquated. As of July 30, Hendrix’s legal team has embarked on an appeal against the conviction, positioning her case as a potential catalyst for re-evaluating this doctrine.

Hendrix’s forthcoming appeal, to be filed with the Minnesota Court of Appeals, aims to challenge the validity of her conviction under this old legal concept. While the outlines of her legal arguments remain undisclosed, her case may pressure the judiciary into reconsidering the existence of the fighting words exception in modern law. Although altering constitutional doctrines is never straightforward, the peculiarities of Hendrix’s case highlight fundamental issues within this legal exception.

April 2025 set the stage for an escalating incident at a Rochester, Minnesota playground. After a Somali child reportedly took an item from Hendrix’s bag, tensions rose, culminating in Hendrix’s use of a racial slur. A nearby spectator, capturing the incident on camera, confronted Hendrix. Provoked by the situation, she repeated the slur, a moment that quickly went viral. Consequently, local prosecutors brought forth two misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges against her—one concerning her conduct directed at the child, the other concerning her interaction with the man recording the scene.

The legal proceedings, lasting four days, concluded with a split decision: Hendrix was found guilty regarding the bystander with the camera but acquitted in the charge concerning the child. The conviction leveraged the ‘fighting words’ doctrine, which emerged from the 1942 case of Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire. This legal principle permits the restriction of speech that is likely to incite immediate violence. As a result, Hendrix received a $1,000 fine, one year of probation, 200 hours of community service, and a 90-day jail sentence that was stayed. Her attorney, Brian Karalus, intends to challenge this verdict.

Despite the ideological shifts within the U.S. Supreme Court over the years, they have consistently acted to preserve free speech rights, even protecting unpopular voices. Notably, the 1969 case Brandenburg v. Ohio saw the Court overturn the conviction of a Ku Klux Klan leader who incited violence against minority groups. The ruling underscored that even inflammatory speech is protected unless it is intended to and likely to incite imminent lawless action. This precedent places Hendrix’s situation within a broader conversation about the limits of free expression and the thresholds for legal consequences.

Arrests Made in Shocking Connecticut Home Invasion That Shook Coastal Community

0

In a dramatic development, authorities have apprehended a suspect linked to a fatal home invasion in a tranquil Connecticut coastal community. The suspect was captured by U.S. Marshals in neighboring New York after an intensive two-month pursuit.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Marshals’ New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force triumphantly announced the arrest of Ivan Barias-Florimon, 24, in the Bronx. Barias-Florimon was identified last week as the second perpetrator in connection with the tragic shooting of Frederick Raymond Werner, 69, that occurred on June 3.

The disturbing incident unfolded on June 3 when Werner and his wife were violently attacked in their Milford, Connecticut residence. Authorities say Barias-Florimon, along with another suspect identified as 25-year-old Stuar Lopez-Reyes, forced entry into the couple’s home on East Broadway and opened fire upon the residents.

The horrifying ordeal also left Werner’s wife suffering a gunshot wound to the head. She remains hospitalized, where she continues her recovery, according to FOX61.

Barias-Florimon is facing charges of:

  • Felony murder
  • Conspiracy to commit murder
  • Home invasion
  • Attempted murder
  • First-degree assault on an elderly person

Milford Police said the attack was not a “random act of violence” and may have been targeted.

U.S. Marshals, along with Milford and New Haven police, arrested Lopez-Reyes on Thursday in connection to the crime.

An obituary for Werner said “Fred embraced life to the fullest. He loved spending time on the golf course, boating on the water, relaxing by his pool, and soaking up the sunshine. The ocean was one of his favorite places, where he found peace and happiness.”

New York Criminal Court records indicate Barias-Florimon was arraigned Tuesday, when a judge ordered that he be remanded without bail. He is due back in court Aug. 18.

As for Lopez-Reyes, he is being held in a Bridgeport, Connecticut, jail cell on a $3 million bond and is due to appear in court on Aug. 11.

Werner is survived by his wife, his sister, two daughters, and three grandchildren.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.

Unseen Highlights from Meghan’s Joyful Birthday Dance Video

0

Celebrating her 45th birthday in style, Meghan Markle kicked off her special day by dancing joyfully in her recently redecorated kitchen.

In an Instagram post, the Duchess of Sussex shared a delightful video clip, filmed by Prince Harry, that captured her dancing to a cheerful birthday tune. Adding a playful touch, she wore a headband reminiscent of a tiara.

The video offered her 4.7 million followers a rare glimpse into the kitchen of her luxurious £11 million Montecito mansion, where Meghan was believed to have spent the day with Prince Harry and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The kitchen itself, with its farmhouse charm, featured two spacious kitchen islands, elegant chandeliers above the dining area, and Meghan’s favorite Vitamix blender. This freshly renovated space was decorated with vibrant bouquets and festive birthday balloons.

In the clip, the mother-of-two dazzled with jewelry worth £46,696, while keeping her outfit casually chic in a simple slogan T-shirt and pajama bottoms. She accessorized with a bargain £9 ‘Happy Birthday!’ headband from Target.

So, as Meghan offers fans a glimpse inside her home, read on to discover the hidden details you might have missed…

1. Two kitchen islands

Meghan’s swish new kitchen looked to have not just one – but two – kitchen islands, positioned in the centre of the farmhouse-style room. One, featuring a dark wood base and a marble tabletop, while a second, lighter hue one was also available.

Many people opt to do this to have one ‘hosting’ table to present for guests, if there is ever a communal gathering, while a second is there for doing the grunt of cooking ‘work’.

This could be the case for the Duchess – albeit both tables were decorated with ornate vases of flowers.

2. ‘It’s Giving Mrs’ top

In what appears to be a hen-do style item, Meghan wore a white T-shirt that said ‘It’s Giving Mrs’ as she was greeted with the birthday greetings from Harry.

They’re available across a number of online retailers such as Temu – but it’s likely Meghan got hers from  Etsy, where they can start from around £9.60.

3. Birthday balloons

It appears Meghan got no shortage of balloons on her birthday, as the ones presented to her on the kitchen counter were just one of the bunches.

She had also held onto a different, equally festive bunch in her birthday Instagram post, as she pictured herself jumping into an outdoor pool.

Two black-and-white images showed the Duchess in a swimsuit – with sunglasses on and her hair up in a ponytail – as she leapt into the water.

4. Target party headband

The birthday girl wore a $13 (£9) birthday headband from budget superstore Target as she danced along to the music.

5. ‘Farmhouse’ chandelier

Meghan’s farmhouse-style kitchen is accentuated with a statement, hanging chandelier in the dining table area, thought to be the $798 (£592) ‘Selene’ fixture from Ping lights.

The product description reads: ‘With its five light pendant configuration, this vintage chandelier casts a warm and inviting glow that beautifully illuminates any space.’

Meghan appears to have opted for the brass metal frame, adding a weathered, period feel.

6. MORE lights

Not far from her statement lighting fixture, Meghan and Harry have two more lamps right next to each other.

One is a fixture adjusted to the ceiling, while a second – adding more to the rustic aesthetic – is a silver candelabra style chandelier.

7. Pajama bottoms worth £160

The royal wore £160 pajama bottoms as she was greeted with the birthday celebrations in the morning.

The set, from company Eberjey, tout the use of a fabric called ‘TENCEL’.

‘Modal fibers and a touch of elastane, this buttery soft fabric is verified by OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, meaning it’s dyed with safe and non-toxic dyes,’ the website says.

‘This relaxed long sleeve set features contrast piping, a button-front top with a notch collar and functional pocket, and a low-rise straight leg pant.’

8. £30,450 worth of bracelets

Meghan wore some of her favourite bracelets – which typically make up her stack – as she celebrated her birthday.

Among them is her beloved Cartier Tank Française watch, which she inherited from her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, after Prince Harry passed it on to her following their marriage.

Frequently worn by Meghan, the watch has become a beloved piece in her collection.

Originally valued at £17,800, its historical significance likely makes it worth much more today.

She also sported a £7,050 Cartier Love bracelet – an iconic design first created in New York in the 1970s.

Crafted from 18-carat gold, the bracelet’s screw motif symbolises eternal love, with a unique closure that locks around the wrist, representing lasting commitment.

Also on her wrist was a Bezel Tennis Bracelet from Los Angeles-based Jennifer Meyer, which are currently retailing for £5,600.

Their two dogs, Pula and Mamma Mia wore paper hats

Meghan and Harry weren’t the only ones getting into the festive spirit

9. £16,246 necklace and earrings

Meghan was spotted wearing her £15,953 Lovers Duet Diamond and Emerald Chain Necklace in the dancing video.

The impressive piece from Logan Hollowell ’embodies growth, love, and renewal while the asscher diamond, is celebrated for its symmetry and strength’.

She also wore her ‘Royal Signet’ stud earrings from Ariel Gordon, which cost $395 (£293).

10. Pot filler tap

The Duchess has spoken about her love of cooking in her lifestyle show and through her As Ever brand – so it’s perhaps no wonder she has a trendy ‘pot filler tap’ by her stove.

Designed to avoid having to carry around bulky trips with heavy pans – from sink to stove – this allows for easy access.

These can start from £100 and go to anywhere upwards of £2,000.

11. Traditional Iberian blue and white ‘azulejo’ tile mural

Harry and Meghan recently enjoyed a Portuguese getaway – and their love for the country can be shown through the tiles above the Sussexes’s stove.

The blue and white pattern, which looks to be depicting a town square, was made using traditional Iberian ‘azulejo’ tile mural stylings.

Dating as far back as the 13th century, it is characterised by the use of blue and white, often depicting grand historic scenes and designs.

It was also important in helping control the temperature of homes by reflecting the sunlight and acting as a ‘thermal shield’.

12. Meghan’s favourite Vitamix blender

Meghan has long sworn by her £449 Vitamix blender – and it was out for her birthday festivities.

She previously told Esquire: ‘When I had my car brought out here [to Canada], I shipped my Vitamix in the backseat. It was one of the things where I was like I cannot travel without my Vitamix.

‘It’s like a commercial at this point. But I use it every day for pestos or shakes. Okay, now that’s too much. I need to stop.’

13. Flowers with bagels

Meghan’s cooking show and lifestyle brand showed that she was a fan of using flowers to present meals – and petals in her cookies.

And now, it appears she could even enjoy them alongside bagels. In the video, the birthday girl was seemingly being treated to some breakfast, which was cooking on the stove.

A plate nearby included bagels, tomatoes, some condiments – and a selection of flowers.

14. Party hats on her pooches

Meghan and Harry weren’t the only ones getting into the festive spirit. Their two dogs, Pula and Mamma Mia wore paper hats.

The hats slip on and off the dogs, before Harry repeated ‘oh dear’ and Meghan chuckled, adding: ‘Oh no, okay, let’s take it off. I’m sorry.’

Darien Home Invader Captured After Homer Glen Standoff

HOMER GLEN, Ill. (WLS) — After a tense standoff lasting several hours in the southwest suburbs, law enforcement has taken one person into custody, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

The standoff unfolded in the 13200-block of Maverick Trail in Homer Glen.

The situation began when authorities reported that the suspect fled to a residence in Darien following an alleged home invasion.

Police indicated that a victim from the Darien home was transported to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Pursuing the suspect, Darien police halted their chase upon reaching Homer Glen, a short distance from the scene of the invasion.

Law enforcement eventually found him and then came a long standoff.

“Coming out and seeing the SWAT trucks and the SWAT people is pretty crazy. I mean, anybody would see that and be like, ‘What’s going on?'” said Homer Glen resident Donny Mutzbauer.

For hours, the suspect remained inside the home, occasionally appearing outside, according to witnesses.

“Kind of like a nonchalant kind of like vibe he’s kind of giving, like coming out, opening the garage, shutting it, opening it. Open the front door, just different, like it’s weird,” said Homer Glen resident Steven Pressley.

During the standoff, officers repeatedly issued warnings over a bullhorn.

“Come to the front door with your hands up and nothing in your hands or force will be used against you,” an officer announced.

Officers also warned that chemical munitions would be deployed.

The Will County Sheriff placed a shelter in place as a precaution.

That request has since been lifted.

Revitalize Your Feet: Top 5 Barefoot Exercises to Outperform Orthotics for Seniors Over 60

0

Experiencing stiff feet after reaching 60? These four barefoot exercises can help rejuvenate your foot’s natural suspension.

>

Every day, we confine our feet within shoes, often neglecting the importance of strengthening them, which poses a significant issue. Take a look at your foot—nearly a quarter of your body’s bones are located there. As a fitness coach, I’ve observed that most people are unaware of how to effectively build strength in their feet.

By the conclusion of this guide, you’ll understand that your feet function more like a mountain bike’s suspension system rather than a solid brick. I’ll also introduce you to four exercises that can help restore this natural suspension mechanism, all done barefoot.

The 7-Day Wall Sit Challenge That Restores Leg Strength After 60

The Engineering Inside Your Foot

Let’s take a closer look. Each foot contains 26 bones, and 28 if you count the sesamoid bones. There are over 33 joints and well over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments all in your foot. That’s an incredible amount of engineering packed into something most of us never even think about.

Most people think they have only one arch in the foot. If this is your right foot and this is the inside, you’d think of the medial arch. So when we talk about the arch of the foot, most people limit their thought to the medial arch. But we also have a lateral arch, and we also have a transverse arch for the rotation of the foot.

These arches don’t simply hold you up. They constantly change every time you take a step. That includes an extension of the big toe, and that includes both of the arches, medial and lateral, and of course the transverse. So every little step you take, all 28 of these bones have to work in conjunction with the ground and all the bones above them to ensure a strong, stable, and efficient gait.

Your Feet Are Suspension, Not Concrete

Imagine you’re driving a pickup truck with no suspension. Every crack in the road would travel straight into the frame. Now imagine driving on the exact same road with premium shocks and suspension. The bumps don’t disappear, right? The suspension simply absorbs and redistributes the force. That is exactly what your feet were designed to do.

Every step you take creates force that can be two to three times your body weight. If you’re running, we’re talking around seven times. And if you’re running on a hard surface like concrete, we’re talking closer to 12 to 15 times. So whatever you weigh, every step you take is two to three times that traveling through your body, and if you’re running, especially on a hard surface, that’s up to 12, sometimes considered 15 times the force from your body weight into the ground and traveling back up your foot and through your spine.

If these forces aren’t distributed throughout the foot with its variety of movements, they travel directly into your knees, your hips, and your spine. Instead of allowing that to happen, your arch flattens slightly, your plantar fascia stores elastic energy, and then your foot becomes rigid again as you push off.

How One Step Actually Works

Every step we take, that big toe has to go into some extension. That then transfers the load into the sesamoid bones, and then that sends it up the foot, and then up the shin, and then your knees, your hips, and so on. Remember, a lot of things have to happen.

So when that toe goes into extension, there’s also a change in the transverse fascia, the rotation of the foot. There’s also a change in the medial arch, which goes internal, and then as we get rigid and we step off the toe, everything transfers out. You have to have all these combined movements of rotation, flexion, and extension to have good force distribution from the foot.

Try to think of the plantar fascia like a heavy-duty winch cable. As your toes extend, that cable tightens, pulling the arch upward and transforming your foot into a powerful lever. It’s really an elegant design.

Shoes Support, They Don’t Strengthen

Unfortunately, most of us spend decades asking our shoes to do the work instead. Before anyone misunderstands me, shoes, socks, even orthotics absolutely have their place. For certain injuries and deformities, and even medical conditions, an orthotic really is valuable.

But for most people, you probably don’t need an orthotic. You just need some manual therapy, and you definitely need some exercises for it.

Here’s the important distinction. An orthotic supports your foot. Socks, to a degree, compress your foot. Shoes support your foot. But none of them actually strengthen the muscles. They don’t improve coordination, and they don’t retrain the nervous system. That’s where barefoot training becomes so valuable.

Your Feet Are Your Body’s GPS

One of the biggest reasons is something called proprioception. The bottom of your foot contains thousands of sensory receptors. Every second, they’re measuring pressure, surface texture, joint position, weight distribution, and movement. All that information is sent directly to your brain. The brain then makes tiny adjustments throughout your ankles, your knees, your hips, and even your spine, long before you’re even aware of it.

I like to think of the feet as your body’s GPS system. The better the signal, the better the navigation.

As we get older, those signals often become weaker. Not because our brain stopped working, but because our feet become less active. We wear supportive shoes nearly all day. We spend very little time barefoot. Those small muscles become weaker, the nervous system receives fewer meaningful inputs, and over time, balance, coordination, and movement quality begin to decline.

There’s another fascinating aspect of the foot. The sole contains one of the highest concentrations of sensory nerve endings anywhere in the body. That’s one reason practices like foot massage, acupuncture, and reflexology have existed for thousands of years.

Now, the research doesn’t support the idea that pressing on one spot on your foot can directly treat an entire organ or organ system. But there is evidence that stimulating the feet can help improve relaxation, alter pain perception for some people, and increase sensory awareness, whether that’s through massage, acupressure, or simply spending more time moving barefoot.

You’re giving your nervous system richer information to work with, and that’s exactly what these exercises are designed to do. They’re not just strengthening muscles; they’re rebuilding the body’s natural suspension system one step at a time.

4 Standing Exercises That Build Strength Faster Than People Half Your Age Expect After 70

The first exercise in our foot restoration series is self-massage. If you don’t have the flexibility to be on the floor, you can do this sitting in a chair. If you’ve never done this, your foot fascia may be extremely tight and you may not be able to get your fingers all the way in. You can certainly use some lotion to help make the process a little easier.

How to Do It:

  • Take your right leg and cross it over your left.
  • Interlace each one of your fingers in between each one of your toes, starting by sliding your pinky finger in between your pinky toe.
  • Grab your fingers so you can really get it in there, webbing to webbing, the webbing of your fingers into the webbing of your toes.
  • Once everything is fully in there, dorsiflex your foot, bending it back.
  • Use your other hand to hold your heel so your heel doesn’t move and your ankle doesn’t move.
  • Gently twist your foot back and forth, like you’re wringing out a towel.
  • Pump by flexing and extending the forefoot, or the front of the foot.
  • Combine those two movements into a torsion, which we can also call a lemniscate.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t let your heel or ankle move. Hold the heel steady with your opposite hand so the motion happens in the forefoot.
  • Work both directions. Don’t only twist one way.
  • Don’t force your fingers in if the fascia is too tight. Use lotion and work into it gradually.

Sets and Reps: Anywhere from three to five minutes per foot.

Form Tip: When you’re done, look down at your toes and you can generally see a little more space in the foot you just worked. That won’t last through the day, it’ll start to cramp back in. But imagine doing this most every day and starting to restore that natural splay and natural arch just with a little bit of self-massage.

Single-Leg Standing Toe Coordination

Step one is just single-leg balance. Once you’re comfortable balancing on a single leg, then we work the coordination.

How to Do It:

  • Stand on one leg. If you need to, hold onto a chair or put your hand on the wall.
  • Lift your big toe, then set it down.
  • Lift your other four toes, then set them down.
  • Work back and forth between the big toe and the other four toes.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t skip the balance step. Get comfortable on one leg before you add the toe work.
  • Don’t force the standing version if you’re not ready. Start seated in a chair, progress to kneeling, and then eventually the goal is to perform the exercise from a standing position.

Sets and Reps: About 60 to 90 seconds each foot, one to three sets.

Form Tip: The progression is seated, then kneeling, then standing. Work the coordination at whatever level you can control it.

The Shuffle Walk

This next exercise I picked up from the Gait Guys. As the toe comes up, I feed all those proprioceptors. I give it even more information by dragging it. And then as it rolls down and the other comes up, I get the coordination phase. That’s the idea with the shuffle walk.

How to Do It:

  • Start with your feet nice and square.
  • Roll up onto the ball of your right foot.
  • Drag it backwards until your big toe is about at the middle of the other foot.
  • Roll it down and set it down.
  • Roll up onto the other foot, drag it back, set it down.
  • Repeat, one, two, one, two, over and over until you’re really comfortable with it.
  • Once you’re comfortable, put it into the full motion: as one foot comes down, the other one is already coming up.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t rush to the full motion. Get comfortable with the one-at-a-time version first.
  • Don’t skip the drag. That’s what feeds the proprioceptors even more information.

Sets and Reps: 60 to 90 seconds, one to three sets.

Form Tip: Yes, it looks like the moonwalk. That’s the idea.
