A Kansas mother’s simple outing with her family turned into a medical nightmare after what seemed like an ordinary spider bite resulted in surgery and serious infections, leaving her in the hospital for several weeks.

Britagne Miller from Goddard, a small town located about 14 miles west of Wichita, recalls spending a relaxing evening by the campfire with her husband and four children at Cheney Lake on May 28. However, the tranquility was short-lived when several spiders crept onto her, delivering bites that would soon cause significant health issues, according to reports from KAKE and FOX Kansas.

Just four days after the incident, Miller noticed frightening changes in her physical condition. A bite on her calf had become intensely painful and swollen, forcing her to seek medical assistance, as detailed by FOX Kansas.

Miller vividly recounted to KAKE, “The swelling was relentless, akin to touching a scorching fire poker. The pain shot down my leg and into my foot, as if it were being continuously stabbed.”

Miller was admitted to Wesley Hospital in Wichita on June 4 and underwent surgery, according to KAKE and a GoFundMe created by her husband, Jake Miller.

Her treatment was complicated by existing blood-clotting disorders, liver problems and allergies to certain medications, KAKE reported.

Miller later developed infections. Doctors also determined that she was suffering from end-stage liver failure and warned her family that her condition could be fatal, according to KAKE.

Miller, who chose to continue treatment rather than enter hospice care, said she remembers little from her time in intensive care, according to the outlet.

She was released from the hospital on July 11, and is continuing her recovery at home.

Miller now requires home health care, physical therapy and regular visits with specialists. She also hopes to receive a liver transplant but is not yet eligible to be placed on the transplant list, according to KAKE and the GoFundMe.

Doctors have not confirmed what kind of spider bit her, KAKE reported.

Dr. Raymond Cloyd, a horticultural entomologist at Kansas State University, told KAKE that the brown recluse and black widow are two venomous spiders commonly found in Kansas.

Cloyd advised sealing cracks and using caution with boxes, shoes and other undisturbed items, KAKE reported.

“We know there is still a long road ahead, but we are holding on to hope that one day this season will be behind us, and she will be able to continue doing what she loves most — being a mom, and someday a grandmother,” the GoFundMe states.

The Miller family could not immediately be reached by News Media for additional comment.

Renowned British actress Samantha Morton has candidly expressed her thoughts on the persistent issue of ageism in Hollywood.

Celebrated for her recent portrayal of the magical Circe in Christopher Nolan’s ambitious epic, “The Odyssey,” Morton, at 49, found herself in a period without work, attributing this gap to her age despite receiving critical acclaim for her role.

In a revealing conversation on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, released this Monday, Morton shared, “I haven’t had any work since wrapping ‘The Odyssey,’ even with excellent agents and a manager advocating for me. Ultimately, age plays a role—I’m 49.”

Although Morton is confident in her acting abilities, she acknowledged the fiercely competitive nature of the industry. “I believe in my skills, but many talented actors are vying for roles. The dynamics within the industry have shifted significantly,” she remarked.

Scoring a part in “The Odyssey,” which completed production in August 2025, was particularly meaningful for Morton. It not only allowed her to continue her craft but also provided the rare chance to collaborate with Nolan, an opportunity she truly valued.

“So what this means to me — regardless of carrying on working, which I feel confident with the ups and downs I will keep working until I’m in my 80s or whatever — but for me it’s more I got to work with Christopher Nolan in my lifetime,” she shared.

“That’s it. I’m happy now.”

The actress, who’s also worked with directors Steven Spielberg and Woody Allen, admitted, “I genuinely cried when I got the call from my team saying, ‘Christopher Nolan would like to meet you.’”

Morton reflected on what her role in the ensemble film means at this point in her life.

“Hope and faith that I suppose if you keep at it, and you keep producing good work and the right people see it, then maybe you can carry onward,” she shared.

Morton is now receiving awards season buzz for stealing the show playing a mythical witch in the film, which also stars A-listers Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron.

Morton, who’s been working since the ’90s, has already built an iconic career on screen. She won a Golden Globe in 2007 in the best supporting actress in a series, miniseries or television film category for her role in “Longford,” and received a BAFTA Fellowship in 2024 recognizing her outstanding career in film and television.

She’s been nominated for two Oscars — one for best supporting actress in 1999 for “Sweet and Lowdown” and one for best actress for “In America” in 2002.

In a significant legal move, a woman who suffered rape at the hands of an Irish firefighter in a Boston hotel is challenging Court TV through a lawsuit. She alleges the network revealed her name during the trial proceedings, breaching a judge’s confidentiality mandate.

Terence Crosbie, aged 39, faced conviction for the rape of the unnamed woman, a crime that spanned a harrowing 15 minutes within a sixth-floor room at the Omni Parker Hotel on March 15, 2024.

Crosbie consistently maintained his innocence, vehemently denying any contact with the woman during his visit to Massachusetts from Dublin, where he was attending the Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

The legal proceedings encountered a hurdle when the first jury could not reach a consensus. However, Crosbie’s guilt was ultimately affirmed in a subsequent trial in October 2025, resulting in a sentence ranging from seven to nine years’ imprisonment.

Massachusetts law ensures the privacy of sexual assault victims, safeguarding their identities by keeping their names undisclosed, hence the victim’s name remains under wraps.

While Crosbie’s trial was broadcast, the judge on the case ordered that media outlets redact the victim’s name.

However, the woman filed a lawsuit against Court TV on Monday claiming that the outlet shared her name during its coverage of the trial despite the judge’s order.

‘Court TV apparently believed in this case that these restrictions were merely advisory,’ said the lawsuit filed by Jane Doe in federal court on Monday.

‘Instead of making sure their team strictly complied with the Court’s orders, Court TV just shrugged and allowed Doe’s name to be printed on the chyron for its cablecast not once but twice – with the second time occurring after it had been put on notice of the first violation. 

‘That content was then published to various social media platforms with Doe’s identity then going viral on the internet.’

Doe claimed she wrote E.W. Scripps Company, Court TV’s parent company, in January seeking $2.8 million for damages caused by revealing her name.

She also said that Jellysmack, which acquired Court TV in February, also rejected her request.

The federal lawsuit seeks compensatory damages to be determined at trial for emotional distress, physical and mental suffering and medical bills.

‘The second trial, ending in a guilty verdict, should have presented an opportunity for Doe finally to heal from the trauma of her rape,’ the filing said.

‘Instead, she finds herself now separately traumatized by the irresponsible disclosure of her identity – a harm that, given the internet’s enduring nature, cannot be remedied and is unlikely to abate.’ 

Doe’s lawyers, Ellen Zucker and Martha Coakley of Zucker Law Group, told The Boston Globe their client is ‘courageous.’ 

‘She came forward about the sexual violence she suffered,’ the lawyers said.

‘Courts and the responsible press have long appreciated that victims of rape who testify in court deserve some measure of privacy. That principle is worth fighting for.’ 

During Crosbie’s trial, prosecutors laid out how he flew to the United States with several other members of the Dublin Fire Brigade to participate in Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The group landed at Boston’s Logan Airport the afternoon of March 14, and went to bars that evening.

At the end of the night, Crosbie’s roommate, Liam O’Brien, a member of the Irish Fire Brigade, returned to the hotel room he was sharing with Crosbie with a woman he met at The Black Rose pub.

The woman testified in court that she fell asleep on the other bed after having consensual sex with O’Brien, who was splayed out and snoring loudly in the first bed.

She said she later awoke to Crosbie raping her.
