Survey teams from the NWS identified EF-1 tornado damage in several locations, including Lansing, Country Club Hills, Hazel Crest, Harvey, and Homewood, emphasizing the tornadoes’ impact.

In Lansing, the tornado reportedly dissipated just east of the Illinois-Indiana border in Munster, with the storm reaching peak winds of approximately 110 mph, according to NWS.

Additionally, the NWS confirmed the occurrence of EF-0 tornadoes in both Glen Ellyn and Orland Park during this turbulent weather event.

The tornado in Glen Ellyn was noted for producing peak winds that reached up to 80 mph, showcasing the storm’s power in that area.

Illinois had already set a record for tornadoes this year, before Monday’s storms.

Crews additionally confirmed straight-line winds over 70 mph in Carol Stream and Downers Grove, where a contractor was found dead on Tuesday evening after going missing in a storm sewer as severe weather hit the area on Monday, officials said.

NWS investigated video footage showing a possible tornado touchdown near Watseka, Illinois in Iroquois County. NWS was unable to confirm contact with the ground, so it is being categorized as a funnel cloud.

Surveyors remained in the field on Tuesday afternoon. They are looking at damage in several areas, including Glenwood and Markham, and it may take some time to complete those surveys.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people lost power during the storms.

ComEd COO David Perez held a press conference on Tuesday in Frankfort after severe weather.

A ComEd spokesperson said crews were working extended hours and expected to restore power to about 80% of affected customers by the end of the night.

Across the south suburbs, homes and buildings sustained significant damage. At a University Park apartment building, part of the roof was torn away by the storm.

The damage left residents displaced in communities, including Homewood, Lansing, and Hazel Crest.

A community center in Steger has been transformed into a Red Cross shelter for residents across the south suburbs affected by damaging storms that left many displaced or without electricity for hours.

As communities worked to recover, local organizations, volunteers and businesses stepped in to provide assistance to those impacted by Monday’s storms.

Mom Reveals 9-Year-Old’s Fears Before Dad Allegedly Murdered Her

On Tuesday, the mother of nine-year-old Melina Frattolin took the stand, revealing that her daughter had opposed traveling abroad with her father. This revelation comes months before prosecutors allege he killed her during a summer visit to New York.

In Essex County Court, Kali Galanis recounted how Luciano Frattolin, her ex-partner, had planned to take Melina to Ethiopia, where he was originally from, for two weeks in January 2025. According to Galanis, the journey was ultimately canceled because Melina was against the idea.

“She didn’t want to go,” Galanis shared during her testimony, noting that she too felt increasingly apprehensive about the trip being proposed.

Galanis’ account offered the jury insight into the family’s tension regarding Melina’s travel plans and highlighted her increasing unease about her daughter traveling with Frattolin months prior to Melina’s tragic death.

Galanis said she had concerns about allowing Melina to travel internationally with Frattolin after the couple separated in 2019. She testified that her attorney warned her about cases in which estranged parents took children overseas and refused to return them.

Galanis testified that Frattolin later proposed extending the Ethiopia trip. She said conversations with Melina about the trip ultimately convinced her to cancel it.

“I became uncomfortable,” Galanis testified.

“I was not ok with that anymore,” she said of the proposed trip.

Instead, Frattolin suggested taking Melina on a vacation through the northeastern United States, Galanis testified.

Authorities have said Frattolin and Melina traveled through Connecticut and New York before the child was scheduled to return home to Quebec.

Prosecutors allege that on the day Melina was scheduled to return home to Quebec, Frattolin falsely reported that she had been abducted by two men in a white van, prompting an Amber Alert. Investigators later determined there was no evidence she had been kidnapped, authorities said. Melina’s body was later found partially submerged in shallow water near Eagle Lake in Ticonderoga.

Frattolin has pleaded not guilty to one count of second-degree murder and one count of concealment of a human corpse.

The trial also heard testimony Monday from New York State Police investigator Daniel Mauro, who said Frattolin remarked during questioning that “it would’ve been easier” to kill his daughter overseas, including in Italy or Ethiopia.

Mauro testified the comment came after investigators asked Frattolin whether he had any reason to harm his daughter.

Frattolin’s trial is continuing in Essex County Court.

Transform Your Midsection: Fast 8-Minute Standing Workout for Effective Belly Fat Reduction After 60

0

Discover a powerful 8-minute standing workout by a CSCS trainer designed specifically to combat that pesky belly pooch after 60.

>

For many, a lingering belly pooch can feel like a stubborn reminder of aging, turning fitness into a deeply personal mission. It’s no wonder there’s a temptation to zero in on the perfect lower-ab exercise or the latest gym equipment gimmick. Yet, the secret lies in the basics: a consistent regimen involving strength, movement, and effort across your week.

The concept of spot reduction often leads workouts astray. Strengthening your abs doesn’t signal your body to burn fat in that precise area. A more effective strategy is to implement full-body workouts paired with daily habits that nudge your body composition in a healthier direction.

There’s also a lesser discussed aspect of weight loss in your 60s: sustainability. Your routine needs to be enjoyable and seamless within your life, ensuring you feel empowered and ready for each session. Regularity greatly aids habit formation, so having a set time for your workouts can significantly minimize the mental hurdles.

This routine consists of two alternating exercises performed in four rounds, combining a strength exercise with a conditioning one. In just eight minutes, you’ll engage your legs, upper body, and core, ensuring each session is impactful and efficient.

How to Do the 8-Minute Standing Routine

Set a timer for 40 seconds of work and 20 seconds of rest. Alternate the two exercises below for four total rounds each.

  • Dumbbell Squat to Press: 40 seconds.
  • Standing Cross-Body Knee Drive: 40 seconds.

Repeat that sequence four times. The full routine takes eight minutes, including the built-in rest periods. Use light dumbbells, keep your pace controlled, and rest a little longer if your form starts to break down.

3 Morning Exercises That Address Stiffness Better Than a Hot Shower After 60

Dumbbell Squat to Press

The dumbbell squat to press gives this short routine its strength focus. Your legs drive the squat, your upper body finishes the press, and your core helps keep the movement organized. It brings more total muscle into the session than a seated machine, which helps raise the effort of the workout.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, shoulders, triceps, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart and hold dumbbells at shoulder height.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Lower into a squat you can control.
  4. Press through your feet to stand tall.
  5. Press the dumbbells overhead.
  6. Lower the weights back to your shoulders and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 40 seconds of work for 4 rounds. Rest for 20 seconds before moving to the next exercise.

Best Variations: Bodyweight squat to reach, goblet squat, alternating dumbbell squat to press.

Form Tip: Stand fully before you press so the movement stays strong and controlled.

If You Can Hold a Bridge This Long After 55, Your Core Strength Is Stronger Than 90% of Peers

Standing Cross-Body Knee Drive

Standing cross-body knee drives add the pace this routine needs. The movement trains your abs, hip flexors, legs, and shoulders while keeping you upright and moving. The cross-body action gives your midsection direct work, and the steady rhythm helps lift your heart rate without requiring you to get on the floor.

Muscles Trained: Abs, obliques, hip flexors, quadriceps, glutes, calves, shoulders.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Reach both hands overhead.
  3. Brace your core.
  4. Drive your right knee up as you pull your hands down toward that knee.
  5. Return to the starting position.
  6. Alternate sides at a brisk, controlled pace.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 40 seconds of work for 4 rounds. Rest for 20 seconds before returning to squat-to-presses.

Best Variations: Slower knee drives, supported knee drives, low-impact marching knee drives.

Form Tip: Stay tall as your knee lifts and avoid folding your chest down toward your thigh.

How to Get More From This 8-Minute Routine After 60

This routine works best when it becomes part of a normal day. Pick a consistent time, keep the setup simple, and focus on repeating quality sessions.

  • Use the same time window: Morning, lunch, or early evening can all work. The specific time matters less than choosing one you can repeat.
  • Keep the dumbbells light at first: The squat-to-press should challenge your muscles without pulling your posture out of position.
  • Make the knee drives rhythmic: You want your breathing to pick up, but the movement should still look controlled.
  • Progress gradually: Add a little weight, complete more clean reps in 40 seconds, or reduce extra rest once the routine feels manageable.
  • Support the workout with daily movement: Walks, chores, errands, and active hobbies all help increase the total work your body does across the week.

An eight-minute routine won’t replace every part of a weight-loss plan, but it can give you a repeatable training anchor. Keep showing up at the same time, make the two exercises count, and let the consistency support a stronger, leaner body over time.

Hiker Survives Remarkable Incident Impaled on Mountain Side

0

In a harrowing incident on Montana’s tallest peak, a nurse found himself impaled in a freak accident and hiked an arduous 10 miles back for assistance at the age of 32.

David Cifaldi, along with two companions, was trekking up Granite Peak on July 20 when a misstep caused him to slip on the rugged surface, resulting in a fall onto his own trekking pole.

‘It was just kind of a freak thing, something you’d more expect to roll your ankle versus having a catastrophic injury,’ Cifaldi told KTMF.

“As I rolled over, I noticed one of my trekking poles on the ground. Upon sitting up, I realized the other pole was lodged in my side,” he recounted.

The pole pierced straight through Cifaldi’s side, exiting from both ends and leaving a span of about eight inches between the entry and exit wounds, as detailed in a GoFundMe page established by his friend.

Relying on his expertise as an ER nurse, Cifaldi quickly evaluated the severity of his injury, taking deep breaths to check if the pole had penetrated his lung or chest area.

‘No bleeding, full feeling, no lightheadedness, nothing vital hit, and the pole was stable in place.

‘Given his condition, he made the call to self-rescue rather than wait for extraction — hiking 10 miles back to the trailhead with a trekking pole still through his body,’ his GoFundMe stated.

Cifaldi navigated the rugged mountain descent with the help of his two pals, while the pole remained lodged in his body.

The nurse fashioned his running vest’s chest strap into a makeshift sling, while one friend stayed behind him to keep an eye on any bleeding.

As the grueling hike wore on, Cifaldi told Backpacker magazine the trio realized they were ‘gonna make it’ and broke the tension by ‘making kebab jokes.’

Cifaldi’s hiking buddy, Jesse Ross, wrote on the GoFundMe that the group ‘reached the trailhead entirely under his own power — never once complaining, staying in remarkably high spirits.’

‘Near Mystic Lake, he even asked one of us to hike ahead and warn other hikers, so no children would have to see the wound,’ Ross wrote.

The three friends reached the trailhead after six-and-a-half hours, and Cifaldi was taken to a hospital before being transferred to Intermountain Health in Billings, KTMF reported.

Doctors later removed the trekking pole without complications.

‘All told, [the pole] was in place for eight to nine hours from the fall to removal,’ the GoFundMe read.

Cifaldi is still recovering and may need more surgery. Reflecting on the harrowing accident, he told the outlet he feels ‘very lucky.’

‘A couple inches the other way, and this would be a different story,’ the nurse said.

The GoFundMe was created to help Cifaldi with medical expenses.

Jenny & Sumit Reveal Visa Progress, Debunk Health Rumors

Jenny Slatten and Sumit Singh, popular faces from 90 Day Fiancé, are navigating through challenging times, grappling with health concerns and visa complications.

Jenny, 68, revealed in May that she received a diagnosis of ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, toward the end of 2025. This condition, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurological disorder that currently has no cure and is ultimately fatal.

On July 27, the couple, who continue to appear on the third season of 90 Day: The Last Resort, connected with fans via Instagram to provide updates on their situation.

“We’ve been receiving many questions about Jenny’s condition and my visa status, so we felt it was essential to give a brief update,” they wrote in their social media post.

Sumit from ‘90 Day: The Last Resort’ says Jenny can still do many things on her own

In the accompanying video, Sumit, 38, first addressed social media rumors about the toll the disease had taken on his wife, whom he married in 2021.

“She is still able to do like, walking, talking, everything and she is not depending completely on anyone or on me,” he said. “What you see on some pages that are posting that she is in a hospital bed and unable to do anything – that is a lie.”

“We are still hoping and praying that there will be a solution, there will be a treatment for this,” he added.

With Jenny by his side, Sumit also shared that he and his wife were working on getting him a visa that would allow him to travel to the U.S. with her so she could get care. The couple currently live in India and Sumit had previously been reluctant to begin the lengthy process of applying for a U.S. visa. Her daughter recently said the couple were trying to get Sumit approved for an emergency tourist visa.

“We are not sitting idle,” Sumit said. “We are trying.”

Jenny Slatten tells her followers she is ‘OK’

Jenny did not speak much in the video, but toward the end, she did tell followers that she was “OK.”

While Jenny’s voice was noticeably altered, she assured people that she is “able to take care of myself.”

“With help from him,” she added, tapping Sumit on the arm.

In the caption, the couple also gave a shout-out to fellow 90 Day star Sarper Güven. Sarper, who also appears on this season of The Last Resort, has turned several of his recent stand-up shows into fundraisers for Jenny.

“We also want to say a very special thank you to Sarper for dedicating his stand-up comedy show to support Jenny’s ALS fundraiser,” they wrote. “Thank you to everyone who came to his show, bought tickets, and even gifted tickets to your friends and family to help Jenny. Your kindness means the world to us.”

Lindsay Clancy’s Ex-Husband Reveals Pill Use: A Pivotal Twist in Her Landmark Murder Trial

0

If you or someone you know is considering suicide, immediate help is available by contacting the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

In a critical turn of events, prosecutors have started dismantling the defense’s narrative of Lindsay Clancy as being excessively medicated. They presented nine bottles of medication prescribed to her, each still holding many of the pills.

During his testimony on Monday, Patrick Clancy, her ex-husband, confirmed that numerous psychiatric medications had indeed been prescribed to Lindsay in the months leading up to the tragic deaths of their children. However, Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham pointed out, through her questioning, that many of these prescriptions appeared to be only partially consumed.

“There were a lot of prescriptions, but not many pills actually taken. Correct?” Buckingham challenged, brandishing a bag filled with prescriptions in front of the jury.

“Is that comprehensive?” Patrick responded. “Of all the pills that were prescribed?”

“These are the pills that you brought into the police station,” Buckingham said. “So out of these.”

“Out of those, yeah,” Patrick said. “It’s possible that not a lot were taken.”

Buckingham also sought to distinguish between the total number of medications prescribed over several months and how many Lindsay was prescribed at one time.

Patrick estimated that she was taking three or four medications at most. Buckingham then asked whether it would surprise him to learn that Lindsay was prescribed no more than three medications at any given time and usually two.

“It wouldn’t be terribly surprising, no,” Patrick said.

Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani said the questioning appeared designed to prevent the defense from controlling how jurors view the cocktail of medications that Lindsay Clancy was prescribed in the months before authorities say she strangled Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, inside the family’s Duxbury home in January 2023.

“An important part of being a good prosecutor is not just proving your case, but anticipating the defense’s arguments,” Rahmani, president of West Coast Trial Lawyers, told News Media. “The prosecution wants to get out ahead of that potentially bad evidence by arguing that even though she was prescribed all these meds, she wasn’t prescribed them at the same time. At most, she was prescribed two, three, maybe four medications at once and importantly, she wasn’t taking them.”

Rahmani said prosecutors appeared to be getting ahead of the defense’s claim that Lindsay’s changing prescriptions contributed to her alleged psychosis.

“The last thing you want is the defense to gain control of the key piece of evidence,” he said. “It can be O.J.’s glove or a bag of pills.”

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington shows a list of medications prescribed to Lindsay Clancy

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington shows a list of medications prescribed to Lindsay Clancy, who is accused of killing her children, during his opening statement in Clancy’s murder trial at Plymouth Superior Court, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, U.S., July 27, 2026.

Rahmani said the next phase will likely focus on how long Lindsay took each medication, when she stopped taking it and how many drugs she was prescribed at once.

“It’s not uncommon for psychiatrists to try different medications and stop them when they stop working,” he said. “So how long was she on the Zoloft versus the Ativan versus the Seroquel? How many pills was she taking? I think the prosecution is gonna argue that Lindsay and her doctors were trying to get her better, and the fact that she wasn’t on all these pills at once really shows that the defense is trying to mislead the jury.”

The defense has argued that Lindsay was suffering from psychosis and was not criminally responsible when she strangled her three young children. Prosecutors, meanwhile, framed the mom of three as a calculated killer, saying that Clancy’s children were “deliberately and meticulously killed.”

Buckingham alleged that Clancy deliberately sent Patrick from their Duxbury home to pick up medication and takeout food, giving herself enough time to strangle each child with an exercise band before attempting to kill herself.

During opening statements, defense attorney Kevin Reddington conceded that Clancy killed the children but argued that the only meaningful dispute is what was happening inside her mind.

“She knows that she killed these children,” Reddington told jurors. “The issue for consideration is what was going on in that woman’s mind.”

Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, has pleaded not guilty to three counts each of murder and strangulation.

Judge William Sullivan told jurors that the Commonwealth must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Clancy was criminally responsible when the children were killed.

Survey Reveals Significant American Support for Netanyahu’s Arrest with 22-Point Margin

0

A surprising number of Americans appear to favor taking a hard stance against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A recent poll orchestrated by The Economist/YouGov reveals that nearly half of the U.S. population supports the idea of arresting Netanyahu due to his controversial actions in the Gaza conflict.

This sentiment is captured by the question of whether the U.S. should honor an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Netanyahu. According to the poll results, 49 percent of respondents endorse this move, compared to 27 percent who oppose it, while 23 percent remain undecided.

The ICC’s arrest warrant for Netanyahu, issued in November 2024, accuses him of employing starvation as a weapon of war and perpetrating crimes against humanity, including murder and persecution. Moreover, he faces allegations of deliberately ordering attacks on civilian populations in Gaza.

In a recent development, Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s Mayor, retracted an earlier commitment to apprehend Netanyahu should the prime minister visit for the United Nations General Assembly later this year.

“Our hands are tied without independent legal authority to execute this warrant. The federal government is the entity that holds this power,” Mamdani conveyed in a video shared on the social media platform X.

“And I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant,” he added.

Israel and the U.S. do not fall under the rulings of the ICC, with both countries never having ratified the court’s founding treaty. The ICC, however, asserts jurisdiction over Palestinian territories.

Forty-seven percent of respondents in The Economist/YouGov poll said that they believe Netanyahu “is guilty of war crimes in Gaza,” while 24 percent disagreed and 29 percent were unsure.

The Economist/YouGov poll took place between July 25 and 27, featuring 1,559 respondents and plus or minus 3.3 percentage points as its margin of error.

Australia’s Position in the $6 Billion Influence Battle Amid China’s Strategic Shift

0

In a recent development, Australia has maintained its position as the leading source of development aid in the Pacific, surpassing China by contributing a significant one-third of the region’s loans and infrastructure investments, as highlighted by a new report.

A detailed examination of development initiatives from 2008 to 2024, conducted by the Lowy Institute, reveals that after a period of decline, aid in the Pacific witnessed a resurgence, increasing by 10 percent in 2024.

In 2024, total development aid reached US$4.1 billion (or AUD$5.85 billion). However, projections by the report’s authors suggest a decrease to US$3.8 billion (AUD$5.42 billion) in the yet-to-be-released 2025 figures.

As China shifts its focus from large-scale, debt-driven loans to smaller, more strategic aid, coupled with significant economic challenges across the Pacific, competition for regional influence has intensified.

In 2024, Australia emerged as the chief benefactor to the Pacific, donating $2.14 billion, which accounted for 37 percent of the total financial aid directed to the region during that year.

A total of $6 billion in financing was dispensed from New Zealand, China, and regional development banks.

Australia has also inked $3.4 billion in loan deals, ending China’s reign as the region’s leading lender.

“That’s a product of many years of Australia pushing into these spaces, but it’s meant that what was once a real foothold for China in the region has been narrowed,” the report’s lead author Riley Duke told SBS News.

“Australia is consistently providing the most grant financing to the region, and that picture hasn’t really changed.”

A graph showing aid sources for the Pacific

The report, released on Tuesday, says demand for Chinese loans has dropped since 2019 due to concerns about servicing the debt, more competition between lenders and Chinese banks’ capital availability.

Australia is also a major financier of climate change mitigation projects in the Pacific, including a solar and battery storage facility for Palau to help generate 20 per cent of its electricity, and Tonga’s Renewable Energy Stabilisation Package.

The fruits of those efforts have paid off for Australia, with a flurry of regional security deals announced in recent months, including with Fiji, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Tuvalu.

“They are a clear marker of Australia establishing itself as the lead partner to the region,” Duke said.

“Those deals … take a long time to progress. They’re complicated, but they reflect Australia establishing itself as an inalienably important partner to Pacific countries.”

Why does the Pacific rely on aid?

Developing Pacific Island nations have been hit hard by multiple shocks, including the COVID-19 pandemic and more recently, fuel supply shortages caused by the United States-Israeli war on Iran.

Duke said these multiple challenges put the region at risk of a “lost decade” of development, with Pacific economies caught in “a continual cycle of shock and recovery”.

Food and importing oil costs much more for the Pacific than other countries because of transport fees, fertiliser prices and reliance on diesel generators for power.

The war on Iran is estimated to hit Pacific economic growth, shaving 1 per cent off pre-war growth projections of 3.4 per cent next year.

Australia has stepped in to help Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Samoa to help absorb fuel-price shocks and help with supply.

What is China helping build in the Pacific?

China used to be the dominant lender to the region but shifted its strategy in more recent years to focus on more “small and beautiful” projects — as President Xi Jinping has described it — to win regional influence.

“China’s lending collapse to the region, sort of meant that it had to pivot or adapt how it engaged through aid and development channels, and how that’s materialised is these smaller, more grassroots projects,” Duke said.

“China is offering more training. It’s been donating more equipment, more scholarships, and you know it’s trying to find new ways to build relationships with Pacific countries.”

Those smaller donations include equipment to schools, police forces, and hospitals across the Pacific, as well as training to build up regional health, media, and policing industries.

Its largest single grant is a US$135 million ($192.63 million) project for new roads and bridges in Fiji, followed by the Nauru National Sports Stadium (US$73 million), the Vanuatu Earthquake Recovery Grant (US $57 million), and the High School Sports Complex in Tonga (US$26 million).

Duke said Chinese aid in the Pacific is “highly reactive” to diplomatic developments, and acts as a “strategic lever”.

“When a country switches diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing, or opens strategic negotiations with Australia, Chinese aid flows react.”

One example is Nauru’s 2024 switch of diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing — after which a flurry of Chinese aid followed, including the stadium project.

The report also found Chinese state-owned firms dominate contracts for infrastructure projects, including for multilateral projects.
