In Helen’s final days, swallowing became impossible, leaving her family feeling powerless.

Helen Lister was a beacon of light to her family, bringing warmth and joy to everyone around her.

She had an uncanny ability to sense the needs of her loved ones, whether it meant leaving a meal at their doorstep or offering a comforting phone call.

Alongside her career as a hairdresser, she juggled a catering business, showcasing her dedication and work ethic.

In partnership with her husband, retired Queensland jockey Arthur Lister, she also managed a horse stud.

Helen’s contributions extended to teaching hospitality at the local TAFE, leading charity events, writing a newspaper column, and presiding over the school’s P&C association.

But for her daughter, Angie List, what people remember most about her mum is the joy she brought to everything.

“She adored entertaining and boy did she do it with flair – taking any excuse for a party, hiring karaoke machines for Christmas parties, even hosting a luau complete with fire dancers around their backyard pool,” List said.

“She laughed with her whole body and she made every room she was in feel like somewhere worth being.

“She didn’t want to be called grandma, she thought that made her sound old, she was far too vibrant for that.

“She gave herself a name her grandchildren could say that was easier than Helen – Hem.”

So when Hem didn’t want to do anything for her 50th wedding anniversary, her daughter knew something was wrong.

“I knew immediately that was unlike her,” List said.

“When I pushed, it turned out she didn’t feel she could manage it herself anymore, so I stepped in and organised it for her.”

In September 2023, Hem was diagnosed with dementia.

List said what followed was a two-and-a-half year period that was “relentless from the start”.

Each time Hem lost a part of herself to dementia, her family grieved.

“To have the most vibrant and capable human you know become a shell of her former self was beyond devastating,” she said.

“To see her face but missing that huge smile, to struggle to hear a meek voice saying incomprehensible words instead of her loud voice and vivacious laugh.

“We lost the woman we loved in pieces and grieved it every time we lost something again.

“There’s a reason it is called the long goodbye.”

For eight months up until her death, Hem struggled to swallow.

She required a minced diet and thickened fluids to get the nutrients she needed.

Soon her brain could no longer coordinate the act of swallowing at all.

“She still had a huge appetite, that is the cruelty of it,” List said.

“She was not choosing not to eat, the mechanism was gone.”

Hem was diagnosed with dementia in September 2023.

In Hem’s final days, she weighed 24 kilos and her mouth was open continuously for 10 days.

Her mouth and tongue were dry despite her family’s hourly attempts to moisten it with swabs and sprays.

Hem’s family felt helpless as they watched her in pain from the starvation.

She did not have access to assisted dying as an option because she no longer had the ability to request it.

“The law had been designed for people who retained the capacity to ask for it themselves,” List said.

“Dementia, by definition, takes that capacity away.

“She did not deserve to die by starvation.”

Push to create Hem’s ‘greatest legacy’

List is now fighting for change to ensure no other Australian endures the same fate.

The condition accounted for more than 17,500 deaths in 2024, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

List is calling for a new standalone legal provision called Hem’s Law, separate from existing assisted dying legislation, to permit a family member or legal representative to choose a peaceful death on behalf of a person with dementia.

She said this should only be approved once two independent doctors have confirmed the patient has reached the active dying phase.

Under List’s proposal, the legal provision would also require a speech pathologist to confirm the complete and irreversible loss of swallowing, and a palliative care specialist to confirm comfort care is the only remaining pathway.

List is also proposing a clear and legally binding opt-out provision for anyone who does not want this option available to them for any reason.

If the law were to become a reality, it would mean her mum’s suffering was not in vain.

“It would mean my own children may not have to suffer the trauma of seeing their mother in pain and be helpless like I was,” she said.

“She spent her whole life raising money to improve people’s lives.

“If Hem’s Law passes, her story becomes her greatest legacy.”

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’ Critiques ‘Gilmore Girls’ Netflix Season in Humorous Segment: ‘The Ending Falls Short

When I first tuned into Vince Vaughn’s latest film on Hulu, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, I certainly didn’t anticipate encountering an insightful and humorous critique of the notorious Netflix season of Gilmore Girls. Yet, this is precisely one of the standout comedic moments the movie delivers.

Crafted by BenDavid Grabinski and produced by Andrew Lazar, the film features Vaughn as Nick and James Marsden as Mike, a pair of criminals entangled with a mobster’s operations. Eiza González takes on the role of Alice, Nick’s wife, who is secretly involved with Mike. The plot revolves around their attempt to exonerate Mike, who is falsely accused of being an informant responsible for the mob boss’s son, played hilariously by Jimmy Tatro, landing in jail. The twist? The Nick trying to rescue Mike is from the future, while the present-day Nick risks derailing his plans.

Ultimately, Future Nick, alongside Mike and Alice, succeeds in convincing Present Nick to join their scheme to clear Mike’s name. As part of their strategy, they end up waiting, which leads to a conversation about Alice’s beloved show, Gilmore Girls. Mike confesses to binge-watching all 157 episodes in just two weeks and shares some divisive thoughts on Rory’s love life.

“Jess is alright; he’s charming,” Mike admits to Alice, who is fervently Team Jess. “But Rory deserves better. I’m not saying he’s the worst boyfriend—that title belongs to Dean.”

Alice retorts, “No, Logan is the worst boyfriend,” sparking a lively debate.

Then Mike drops a real doozy: “Logan’s the best boyfriend on the show.”

Nick’s response to this is absolutely appropriate when he says, “Logan? What the fuck, Mike.”

I admit that Mike’s argument is not unreasonable, when he states that Logan and Rory have a lot in common, ie; they’re both spoiled. But Rory? Spoiled?

Mike has an argument for that, too: “Her grandparents paid for Chilton!”

“And when her grandparents offered to pay for Yale, her grandparents insisted that it be a fucking loan, Mike!” Nick fires back.

MIKE & NICK & NICK & ALICE, James Marsden, 2026

“All these arguments about who’s right for Rory are a waste of time anyway,” Mike says eventually, ending the bickering. “She doesn’t end up with any of these guys. She’s single and pregnant at the end.”

This is news to Present Nick, who hasn’t yet watched Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, a four-episode mini season released by Netflix in 2016, set ten years after the season finale.

“Wait a second… it ends with Rory being single and pregnant?”

“Oh yeah… that’s in the Netflix episodes,” Alice chimes. You can tell by her tone of voice she does not think much of the Netflix sequel. “Yeah I guess it’s clever to make Rory a single mother, just like Lorelai but… it’s not a good ending.”

At this point, the conversation returns to the actual plot of the movie, but that was basically a full three minutes—which means roughly three full screenplay pages—of Gilmore Girl analysis. Not only is it delightful and hilarious, it’s also correct: It’s not a good ending.

North Korea’s Missile Ambitions: New Engine Test Signals Threat to US Mainland

SEOUL – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently oversaw the trial of a new high-thrust, solid-fuel engine designed for military use, which he praised as a significant advancement in enhancing the nation’s strategic military power, according to a Sunday report by state media.

The test suggests Kim’s determination to expand and modernize North Korea’s missile arsenal, potentially increasing its capability to strike the U.S. mainland.

This development was reported by the Korean Central News Agency just days after Kim addressed North Korea’s Parliament. In his speech, he vowed to solidify the country’s status as a nuclear power irreversibly, while accusing the United States of engaging in global “state terrorism and aggression,” a comment seemingly directed at the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

During the test, Kim observed the ground jet operation of the newly advanced engine, enhanced with composite carbon fiber materials. The Korean Central News Agency noted the engine’s maximum thrust reached 2,500 kilotons, a significant increase from the approximately 1,971 kilotons recorded in a similar test conducted in September.

Analysts believe that the move to bolster engine power is likely part of a strategy to equip missiles with multiple warheads, thereby improving the likelihood of overcoming U.S. defense systems.

KCNA did not report exactly when or where the test occurred.

The test was conducted as part of the country’s five-year military escalation program. The plan’s objectives include upgrading “strategic strike means,” KCNA reported.

The reference is understood to mean nuclear-capable, intercontinental ballistic missiles targeting the continental U.S.

Kim said the latest engine test had “great significance in putting the country’s strategic military muscle on the highest level,” KCNA reported.

In recent years, North Korea has test-fired a variety of ICBMs demonstrating the potential range to reach the U.S. mainland, including missiles with solid propellants that make detection prior to liftoff more difficult. The country’s older liquid-fuel missiles must be fueled before liftoffs and cannot last long.

Some foreign experts say North Korea still faces technological hurdles before it has a functioning ICBM, such as ensuring its warheads survive the harsh conditions of atmospheric reentry. But others dispute that assessment given the number of years the country has spent on its nuclear and missile programs.

North Korea has pushed hard to expand its nuclear arsenal since Kim’s high-stakes diplomacy with U.S. President Donald Trump collapsed in 2019. In a ruling Workers’ Party congress in February, Kim left open the door for dialogue with Trump but urged Washington to drop demands for the North’s nuclear disarmament as a precondition for talks.

DCLM Daily Manna 29 March 2026 — Power Of The Tongue

DCLM Daily Manna 29 March 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Power Of The Tongue

TOPIC: Power Of The Tongue (DCLM Daily Manna 29 March 2026)

KEY VERSE: And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell – James 3:6

TEXT: James 3:6-13 (KJV)

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

A Greek philosopher asked his servant to provide the best dish possible. The servant prepared a dish of tongue, saying: “It is the best of all dishes, because with it we may bless and communicate happiness, dispel sorrow, remove despair, cheer the fainthearted, inspire the discouraged, and say a hundred other things to uplift mankind.” Later, the philosopher asked his servant to provide the worst dish of which he could think. A dish of tongue appeared on the table again. When asked to explain, the servant said, “It is the worst, because with it, we may curse and break human hearts; destroy reputations; promote discord and strife; set families, communities, and nations at war with each other.” What a paradox!

James, the brother of our Lord Jesus Christ, employed a cocktail of metaphors to describe the power of the tongue. He compared it to a wildfire out of control, reducing to ashes much valuable properties. The tongue can do so much damage within a very short time. He used the art of taming wild animals too to illustrate the difficulty of controlling the tongue, which is impossible to tame by human efforts alone. He further alluded to the danger of a little poison that can kill just by applying a little quantity. He then went to nature, to drive home the lesson about how the believer’s tongue must be consistent in its effect. He compared it to a fountain that should not produce both sweet and bitter water, and a tree, which by nature should produce only one species of fruit. He concluded by highlighting the great virtue of speaking wisely, backed up by humility and gentleness.

The danger caused by a loose tongue is incalculable. Hate speech was responsible for the Rwandan genocide that killed between 500,000 to 800,000 people. Some people have reportedly committed suicide due to bullying and negative words spoken to them at the time when they were emotionally and mentally challenged.

The big lesson here is about weighing our words before speaking out. The only words that can be controlled are the ones not yet spoken. It takes real conversion and circumcision of the heart to bring the tongue under control.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The tongue feels better when words are well weighed and few.

Navigating Global Trade: How Australia’s Economy Adapts to the Hormuz Strait Crisis

0

In Brief

  • Gulf countries have invested in alternatives long before the Hormuz blockade.
  • Some play key roles in oil supply as the war drags on.

Over the past month, tensions in the Middle East have escalated, leading Iran to block oil shipments through the vital Strait of Hormuz. This has caused a sharp increase in fuel prices in Australia, further straining the nation amid an ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

The closure of this crucial passage has raised questions about potential alternative routes for global oil transport.

On Monday, Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), addressed the National Press Club in Canberra. He highlighted that the current conflict in the Middle East has had a more significant impact than the oil crises of the 1970s, as well as the disruption caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Birol noted that the global oil supply is now short by 11 million barrels per day.

The Strait of Hormuz, a 167-kilometer waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, is one of the most crucial oil transit points worldwide.

Around 25 per cent of seaborne oil is exported to the world through the passage, according to the IEA.

While at its narrowest point it’s just 54km wide, it’s used to transport oil produced by countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

How is Iran maintaining a block on the Strait of Hormuz?

After the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on 28 February, Iran launched retaliatory actions, including threatening to attack ships that travel through the Strait of Hormuz.

Tina Soliman-Hunter, a professor of energy and resources law at Macquarie University, told SBS News that the threats effectively formed a blockade on the strait.

“Unlike the US that has very large ships like aircraft carriers and destroyers, Iran has opted for small, fast nimble, armed ships,” she said.

“They’re able to seek out and attack any ship that they don’t want coming through the Strait of Hormuz and then retreat back into Iranian waters.”

“As a result, there’s this real fear of ships being attacked and being sunk by Iran if they try to traverse the Strait of Hormuz. And because it’s such a narrow area, it’s easy for the Iranians to control.”

Throughout the years, the Strait of Hormuz has been at crisis points several times due to regional conflicts, and there have been long calls to seek alternatives to ensure the stability of the maritime route for oil.

What are the alternative routes?

During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, with the possibility of an oil blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia built the East-West Crude Oil Pipeline, connecting its oil tankers to the port of Yanbu in the Red Sea.

In 2012, the UAE completed the Habshan-Fujairah Pipeline — also known as the Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline. It was expected to carry 10 per cent of oil that passed through the Strait of Hormuz.

As Iran now effectively blocks the Strait of Hormuz, the two pipelines have been easing the pressure on global oil supply, but they won’t be able to completely fill the void left by its closure, Soliman-Hunter said.

“The other thing is the fact that these pipelines are land-based infrastructure that is just as susceptible to bombing,” she said.

“It’s still very vulnerable to drone and missile attacks. So, although it’s acting as a bit of a relief valve, it can’t carry as much volume, and it’s still vulnerable to attack.”

Another alternative route that’s been discussed is the Cape of Good Hope route, where commercial ships redirect to South Africa before heading to their destinations in Asia.

But the route is much longer and with rougher seas than the Strait of Hormuz, which can lead to higher costs and larger risks, Soliman-Hunter said.

She said countries may consider the Northern Sea Route, which runs across the Arctic Ocean north of Russia to reach the North Pacific, as the weather gets warm.

A world map featuring an orange line that traces the Cape Route, a maritime shipping path extending from Western Europe down the Atlantic coast of Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope, and across the Indian Ocean toward Southeast Asia.

Jessie Moritz, senior lecturer at the Australian National University’s Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies, told SBS News that besides oil, the conflict has also disrupted the trade route between the region and the rest of the world.

She said it would be worth considering focusing more of the world’s attention on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, as the conflict unfolds.

That corridor, announced in 2023, is in development but is not yet fully operational. It was launched as an alternative to China’s Belt and Road initiative, which aims to strengthen China’s connection to the world and bolster trade.

“[The corridor] was really about an alternative to the China Belt & Road initiative, and it would need to be adjusted to avoid the Strait of Hormuz,” she said.

“But it has also driven Saudi investment in their railway corridors to the Levant and other alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz, which are actively being used to transport food and other goods in the current crisis.”

What does that mean to Australia?

After producing raw crude oil, Gulf countries export it to Asian countries. Those countries then export refined oil to Australia.

The disruption of the Strait of Hormuz has driven a rise in crude oil prices by more than 34 per cent compared to 2025, due to the shortage of supply and insurers spreading the increased costs through the supply chains.

This has led to a surge in refined oil prices globally, including in Australia, with regular unleaded fuel in Sydney reaching $2.44 per litre by 23 March, according to NRMA.

Australia’s low refining capacity also means Australia heavily relies on imported oil from Asia, according to Sanjoy Paul, an associate professor of strategic supply chain management at the University of Technology Sydney.

He said in order to manage supply problems, governments ought to look to “establish or build our refining capabilities and diversify our oil sources and import crude oil from those countries and refine them here,” he told SBS News.

Moritz said Australia also needs to reduce dependence on imported fuel, including having a serious discussion on ensuring Australians receive a fair share of revenue from the country’s own natural resources.

“The government has a critical opportunity, especially given the upcoming budget, to strongly push for Australia to become a world leader in homegrown renewable energy. I hope they take full advantage of it,” she said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday acknowledged the impact of the war on Australians and announced six tankers of jet fuel will arrive in Australia between tomorrow and 8 April from China and other suppliers.

“Our government is undertaking every practical measure required to shield our nation from the worst of the global uncertainty, which is out there,” he said.

“This war is real. This war is having an impact on Australians like it’s having an impact right around the world.”

The prime minister reiterated that a National Cabinet meeting would be convened with state leaders next week to discuss a united approach to fuel shortages.

“While Australia’s fuel supply outlook remains secure over the near term due to the actions that the government’s taken to date, the government has been clear that the longer this war goes on, the greater the impact will be. But we continue to act to prepare and shield Australians from the worst of it.”

UK Police Arrest Two in Connection with Antisemitic Arson Attack; Investigate Potential Iran Ties

0

In a major development in the United Kingdom, authorities arrested two men on Wednesday in connection to what Prime Minister Keir Starmer has labeled an “antisemitic arson attack.” The investigation is also exploring potential links to Iran, adding an international dimension to the case.

The Metropolitan Police reported that the suspects, aged 45 and 47, were apprehended at separate locations in northwest and central London. They face charges of arson with intent to endanger life, and their homes are currently being searched by law enforcement. The incident in question occurred on Monday when four ambulances operated by Hatzola, a volunteer ambulance service in the Golders Green area of north London, were set ablaze.

Prime Minister Starmer expressed his shock and condemnation of the incident on social media, remarking, “The antisemitic arson attack in Golders Green is horrifying.” His comments underline the gravity and sensitivity of the situation.

Complicating the investigation is a video making rounds online, apparently showing a group named Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiyya, which has ties to Iran, claiming responsibility for the attack. This group has also allegedly been involved in recent attacks on Jewish sites in Belgium and the Netherlands, according to the Jewish Chronicle.

“We are aware of an online claim from a group taking responsibility for this attack,” Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams of the Metropolitan Police previously said. “Establishing the authenticity and accuracy of this claim will be a priority… but it is not something we can confirm at this point.”

When asked about the possible Iran link on Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police told Fox News Digital that establishing any potential motivation behind the attack is part of the ongoing investigation but that it could not comment further at this time.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counterterrorism Policing London, which the Metropolitan Police said is leading the investigation, said Wednesday, “We have been working around the clock since this appalling attack took place and this has led to these arrests being made this morning.”

“This appears to be an important breakthrough in the investigation, but we’re also mindful that CCTV footage of the incident suggests there were at least three people involved,” she added. “We fully recognize the local community will still be concerned, and our investigation very much remains active, and we will continue to work to identify and seek to arrest all of those who may have been involved.”

“We know that community concerns remain heightened, and I want to reassure the community that an enhanced, bespoke policing plan and activity, which is particularly focused around vulnerable areas right across London, will continue over coming days and weeks,” Williams said Wednesday.

“This includes specialist officers and capability being deployed alongside local officers to help protect certain locations and will also involve highly visible armed police patrols to serve as a deterrent to anyone seeking to cause our communities harm,” he continued. “I must stress that these are precautionary and not in response to any specific threat, and we continue to work alongside our colleagues in counterterrorism policing to support their investigation.”

Rhapsody Of Realities 29 March 2026: There’s Glory In You

Rhapsody Of Realities 29 March 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): There’s Glory In You

TOPIC: There’s Glory In You (Rhapsody of Realities 29 March 2026)

Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him (Isaiah 43:7)

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

Did you know that you’re in this earth to manifest the glory of God? You’re the first and the best of you to come into this world. You’re God’s best. He’s never had anybody like you, and He will never have another like you. That’s how special you are. So, refuse to fail. It wasn’t a mistake or an accident that you came from the family you came from. There’s glory in your life.

Inside you is something big, big enough to change the world. The Bible says, “…we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us” (2 Corinthians 4:7). You may not have money for clothes right now, or even enough to pay your rent. You may be living in a little room with hardly anything to your name. But it makes no difference; all things are yours (1 Corinthians 3:21).

God has already blessed you with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:3). Heaven is in your heart. Eternity is in your heart: “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart…” (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV). Look inwards and let the Word of God build you from within.

You carry something precious. A land that contains gold requires a miner to help uncover it. That’s what the Word of God does for you. It reveals who you are, shows what’s inside you, and empowers you to live to your fullest potential in Christ. You’re the glory of God, so arise and shine.

PRAYER

Dear Father, I thank you for creating me for your glory. I am unique, chosen, and set apart for your divine purpose. Your Word brings out the treasures within me, and by your Spirit, I manifest excellence, beauty, and your divine power everywhere I go. I refuse to fail; I shine ever brightly for your glory, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Umpire CB Bucknor Faces Six Overturned Calls in a Single Game Due to ABS System

Veteran umpire CB Bucknor is certainly not thrilled with the presence of Major League Baseball’s new Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS), which is rapidly making its mark on the game.

During Saturday’s extra-inning face-off in Cincinnati where the Red Sox narrowly fell 6-5 to the Reds, Bucknor’s performance came under scrutiny. The seasoned umpire, who has been calling games since 1999, faced scrutiny as eight of his calls were challenged, with six ultimately being overturned.

Notably, two of these reversals occurred consecutively. Reds third baseman Eugenio Suarez questioned two strike-three calls in quick succession during the sixth inning when Boston rookie pitcher Ryan Watson was on the mound. Both challenges were successful, spotlighting the efficacy of ABS.

The first questioned pitch was a sinker that hugged the inside corner at knee height, followed by a fastball that barely missed the outside edge of the plate. This sequence left Watson feeling the pressure.

“It felt like, ‘Oh man, that’s two in a row,’” Watson recounted to reporters after the game, as reported by The Athletic. “But yeah, just tried to take a deep breath and get back in the zone.”

In Bucknor’s defense, both pitches were close, but the ABS technology ultimately deemed both of them balls.

The Reds’ home crowd at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, exploded at the two overturned calls.

“That’s probably the loudest I’ve heard a stadium while pitching,” Watson added. “So it was intense, for sure.”

Bucknor reached the spotlight again in the eighth inning after he called out Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story on a check swing, but the team was unable to ask for a review.

With the Red Sox down one and having a chance to break open the game, Story raged at Bucknor for the controversial call, having to be held back by Boston skipper Alex Cora and third base coach Jose Flores.

Bucknor wound up ejecting Cora after the two got into a shouting match.

“He has one job to do, it’s (to) call balls and strikes,” Cora said after Boston’s loss. “It wasn’t his best day. That’s what the system does. It’s out there, everybody sees it, and he’ll be the first one to accept it. I saw him putting his head down after one of the challenges.

“And we’re all human. It’s not easy, what we do and what he does.”

The Red Sox would tie the game in the ninth inning with a solo homer from Wilyer Abreu, but ultimately lost on a walk-off single by Reds center fielder Dane Myers in the 11th.

Martin Short Makes Solemn Public Appearance After Daughter Katherine’s Passing

Martin Short was seen in public for the first time in Santa Monica, carrying a solemn demeanor following the unexpected passing of his daughter, Katherine.

The star of “Only Murders in the Building” was spotted dining with his longtime friend, J.J. Abrams, in the coastal city on Friday evening. Short donned a black blazer over a blue button-down shirt, choosing to forgo a tie, and was clean-shaven for the occasion.

The 76-year-old actor appeared subdued as he and Abrams, known for directing “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” conversed while making their way to a vehicle.

This public appearance occurs during a challenging period for Short. His only daughter, Katherine Short, passed away on February 24 at the age of 42. The cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as confirmed by a death certificate from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, according to TMZ.

“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” a representative for the comedian shared with Page Six last month.

“The Short family is devastated by this loss, and asks for privacy at this time,” the statement continued. “Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”

Martin has since opted to take some time off, with the actor postponing two shows that were previously scheduled with Steve Martin.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, Steve Martin & Martin Short’s show, originally scheduled for Friday, February 27th in Milwaukee, has been postponed,” the Pabst Theater Group wrote on its website Tuesday, noting that tickets would “be honored for a future rescheduled date.”

The comedic pair also rescheduled a show on Feb. 28 show in Minneapolis.

Katherine — whom Martin shared with his late wife, Nancy Dolan, along with two grown sons — had shared details of her struggles with mental health, divulging in a since-deleted professional website that she’d adopted a service dog.

“Joni is my incredible service dog, who has been assisting me with my own struggles with mental illness for the past 5 years,” Katherine wrote alongside a photo of the dog, who was named after Joni Mitchell.

“Joni will often be in the office with me, cuddled up on her bed,” the clinical social worker wrote. “She is an absolute sweetheart and just LOVES people, so don’t be surprised if she greets you with a smile, a wagging tail…and maybe even a kiss.”

Following Katherine’s death, Short had the support of Hollywood behind him — at the Oscars on March 15th, the show’s host, Conan O’Brien honored the iconic actor while closing out the broadcast.

“We love you, Martin Short! Good night!” O’Brien said.
