Haymarket Center: Over Five Decades of Transformative Support for Addiction Recovery in Chicago

0

CHICAGO – Established in 1975, Haymarket Center has been a cornerstone in Chicago for decades, founded on the principle that addiction should be treated as a disease, not a crime. Its founders, Monsignor Ignatius McDermott and Dr. James West, envisioned a supportive approach to treatment over criminalization.

Fast forward over fifty years, and the center continues its mission to support individuals battling substance abuse.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Today, Dr. Dan Lustig serves as the President and CEO of Haymarket Center.

“Haymarket Center stands as Chicago’s most extensive, comprehensive treatment facility,” Dr. Lustig explained. “We address substance abuse disorders, mental health conditions, and primary care issues. Our agency is unmatched in its comprehensiveness, operating around the clock every day of the year to meet the needs of those seeking help.”

Upon arrival, individuals undergo an assessment to identify their most pressing needs and to develop a suitable treatment plan. Dr. Lustig emphasized that clients are granted immediate access to the care they require.

For more than 50 years, Haymarket Center has helped people struggling with addiction.

Kenyatta Cathey, is the chief clinical officer at Haymarket Center.

“Unfortunately we still live in a time where stigma prevails,” Cathey said. “There is a belief that this is a choice that the person is making. They’re not looking at this as a disease. We’re not looking at these individuals as humans that need the same love and compassion that you would have for a family member with a primary medical health condition. And I think that is one thing that we have learned, that we need to treat this situation as a disease.”

For those seeking help and wanting to know they’re in the right place, Cathey says, “We have no wrong doors. As soon as you walk into our facility, we’re looking at this person as the whole person. We’re looking at their primary health condition, we’re looking at their behavioral health condition, and any physical health conditions they may have. And we believe that you should treat all three conditions simultaneously, because if you don’t, there’s going to be a relapse to the other. “

Over the 50 years since Haymarket’s founding, treatments have changed and improved.

“We’ve come a very long way. There’s many pharmaceutical medications out there that help people not just deal with cravings, but also it’s a biologic they can have on a monthly basis that really helps them to manage that craving or desire to use,” Cathey said.

For more than 50 years, Haymarket Center has helped people struggling with addiction.

Antoine High and Melinda McMichael work at Haymarket Center, and both were previously clients.

McMichael says she had a ten plus year substance use history. And she says she was in and out of the criminal justice system for many years.

“And I got to a place in my life where I was so desperate for help,” McMichael said. “I was tired of hurting the people around me, my family, my children. Breaking promises and just going through pain. And I really wanted the help to learn how to stay sober and to get my life back.”

High says he found himself “broken, in and out of the jail system. In and out of abandoned buildings, being an open shame to my family. “

At point he was given a choice, go to jail or get help. And that’s how he wound up at Haymarket Center.

“They gave me an opportunity to have a job,” McMichael said. “And that really, really motivated me to help me build my confidence and get back in the community. I was able to get my son back, from the Department of Children and Family Services. It was not easy, but I could not do it alone. The help offered at Haymarket Center is so unique, and so strategically crafted to help all people in this community.”

Pharmaceutical Supply Chains Disrupted Amidst Iran Conflict: Global Health at Risk

0

As President Trump’s conflict with Iran continues, it is increasingly threatening the pharmaceutical supply chain, potentially driving up the costs of numerous medications, especially those reliant on petrochemical components.

The ongoing turmoil in Iran and the effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have led to a surge in energy costs and created disruptions across various industries’ supply chains. Although the Middle East is not a pharmaceutical manufacturing giant like China or India, it still contributes certain products, and many medications depend on petrochemical ingredients.

“Prolonged instability could lead to longer lead times and higher transportation costs, which would impact the essential materials needed for our medicines, including the critical starting components for active pharmaceutical ingredients,” explained Gerren McHam, Vice President of External Affairs at the API Innovation Center, in a statement to The Hill.

The U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) has released a risk assessment report regarding the conflict in the Middle East, indicating that the current impact remains minimal. The region accounts for just 0.3% of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production and 0.6% of oral solid dose production, primarily based in Jordan and Israel.

Nevertheless, there are specific medications where these two nations play a major role. Jordan is responsible for producing about half of the world’s supply of amoxicillin oral suspension and the same proportion of etomidate’s API, a rapidly acting anesthetic. Additionally, Israel and Jordan collectively produce 73% of the API for flumazenil, a drug used to counteract benzodiazepine effects.

Health care experts say there are alternative treatments for all these medications, and providers are well prepared to work around any potential shortages.

“There are therapeutic alternatives. We’ve actually weathered some drug shortages of those products in the recent past anyway, so we are familiar with some mitigation strategies if needed,” Michael Ganio, senior director of pharmacy practice and quality for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, told The Hill.

Ganio noted that Israel is also the sole supplier of some drugs but added that these are “niche orphan drugs” and opined that the impact would still be limited if the conflict affected these medications.

Pharmaceutical production aside, the Strait of Hormuz is a critical trade route, and that has observers more concerned, especially if the conflict drags on for much longer.

“Much larger impact is disruption of airspace and waterway trade routes — tough to quantify but we know a high volume of ingredients from India need to go west to Europe for final manufacturing. Logically that supply chain is vulnerable,” the USP noted.

The organization highlighted the Red Sea, separated from the Strait of Hormuz on the western coast of Saudi Arabia, as being a much higher source of risk, as it sits along the same trade route that India uses to the transport large volumes of API and finished doses to the U.S. and Europe.

Houthi rebels in Yemen on Friday threatened to enter the war to support Iran. The group could likely shut down the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on the Red Sea, much as Iran has done with the Strait of Hormuz, throttling another key shipping corridor.

India is a major global producer of generic drugs, which make up the vast majority of prescriptions in the U.S. With margins for these medications already paper thin, the added pressure of higher energy costs and a more treacherous trade route could price producers out of the market.

Ganio called this potential pressure on generic drug imports “almost an indirect tariff.”

Petrochemicals, derived from oil, are a key starting material for most medications. If heightened energy prices continue far into the future, those cost increases are likely to be passed on to consumers.

A 2011 analysis of the pharmaceutical industry’s reliance on petroleum estimated that 99 percent of pharmaceutical feedstocks and reagents are derived from petrochemicals, and there are relatively few substitutes for these materials.

As of Friday, the cost of crude oil has risen above $100 a barrel, with projections that it could go far higher if the war continues for weeks or months.

Petrochemicals aren’t directly going into the composition of drugs, but they are needed for production.

“Things that aren’t directly in the medications, but they’re needed in the chemical synthesis pathways,” Ganio said. “So, there may be some drugs that are based on a petrochemical, smaller hydrocarbons potentially.”

And as with almost all products, these chemicals need to be shipped around the world. Still, those familiar with the pharmaceutical supply chain aren’t alarmed yet.

“At the moment, in terms of the U.S., there’s no indication that the conflict is having anything directly impacting the supply chain, or availability of medicines,” McHam said.

“This is a reminder of how exposed we are with our pharmaceutical supply chain, specifically generics; especially those key materials that go into those medicines,” McHam added. “Because the real risk may not be today, but it raises a broader kind of bipartisan concern. The next event of disruption, if it’s more concentrated or is a critical part of our supply chain, what will happen?”

Peter Alexander Bids Farewell to NBC’s ‘Saturday Today’ After 22 Years: Embraces Family Priorities

Fans of the weekend edition of Saturday Today are bidding farewell to a well-known anchor.

Peter Alexander, a veteran anchor for NBC News, revealed on Saturday, March 28, that he will be stepping away from the weekend show and leaving the network after a remarkable 22-year tenure.

During an emotional broadcast, Alexander took a moment to reflect on his expansive career that has taken him to numerous corners of the world.

“These 22 years with NBC News have been an extraordinary journey—from Baghdad to Banda Aceh, and Burbank to Beijing, always working beside some of the most talented, professional, and dedicated journalists out there,” Alexander shared. “I am deeply grateful to all of them, as well as to the leaders and mentors here who have believed in me and provided opportunities beyond my wildest expectations.”

He also expressed his heartfelt thanks to the viewers who have welcomed him into their homes throughout the years.

“Of course, I’m grateful to you for welcoming [me] into your homes for all these years. Almost 14 of those years from the North Lawn of the White House, or maybe from around the world. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been a part of the NBC family for longer than I have had my own family. Studio 1A, being right here with this team, with all the folks that you don’t get to see on TV. This is literally my happy place. It is so fun. I mean, what a gig.”

But the decision to leave wasn’t about ratings or newsroom shakeups—it was personal.

Alexander explained that the demands of the job have kept him away from his wife, Alison Starling, and their daughters, Ava and Emma, more than he’d like.

“I’ve been away from my home more than 80 nights in the last seven months. More than 220 Friday nights—220 Friday nights away from my family in the last seven years,” he pointed out. “So, in this limited window before my daughters lose interest in hanging out with me. It’s already happened quick. I’m eager to carve out a better balance between my personal and professional lives, and to challenge myself with something new. I’m excited. As I was taught, family first, the rest is details.”

He closed out his announcement with a final note of gratitude: “your trust and your confidence,” adding, “And most of all, thank you to NBC News for what have been undoubtedly the most exciting years of my life.”

Fans quickly flooded the comments section of an Instagram clip of the moment, sharing their well wishes—and a little heartbreak.

“You will be missed. Best wishes on your next era and enjoy time with your family!” one viewer wrote.

Another added, “Oh, Peter. Say it isn’t so. We are going to miss you! Best wishes in your new endeavor!❤️.”

Others didn’t hold back their disappointment, with one person calling his departure a “Huge loss for NBC!” while another thanked him for being “a trusted source of news for over two decades” and wished him well in his “next chapter.”

Air Canada Flight Attendant’s Daughter Shares Update on Mother’s Injuries After Harrowing Crash Ejection

0

A flight attendant from Air Canada, who remarkably survived being ejected from the aircraft during last week’s tragic runway collision at LaGuardia Airport, has been seen in the hospital for the first time. Her daughter has shared details about her severe injuries and the extensive recovery process she faces.

Solange Tremblay, a seasoned crew member on Jazz Aviation Flight 8646, operated for Air Canada Express, was discovered on the tarmac, still secured in her jump seat after the crash on March 22, as reported by her daughter, Sarah Lepine.

In an effort to raise funds on GoFundMe, Lepine shared a photo of her mother in the hospital.

“My mom was conscious throughout the ordeal and has suffered severe injuries due to this event,” the fundraising campaign states. “She continues to fight and recover in a New York hospital.”

“My mother’s injuries include two shattered legs (open fractures) requiring multiple surgeries where metal plates are needed to repair the damage done to her legs,” the statement continues. “She sustained a fractured spine where she continues to wait and see if surgery is required.”

Lepine added there are more surgeries ahead for her mother, seeking donations to help. The GoFundMe had over $133,000 raised from more than 2,200 donations as of Sunday afternoon.

“At the moment our greatest fear is the risk of infection which could lead to other horrifying complications if her injuries become infected,” Lepine added. “Right now, my mom needs your help. She is in New York for the foreseeable future for her recovery where she remains in constant fear of sustaining further damages than she has already suffered.”

The crash killed both pilots when the regional jet collided with a fire truck while landing on Runway 4 at LaGuardia. The National Transportation Safety Board said the March 22 accident remains under investigation, while The Associated Press reported that dozens of passengers and emergency personnel were injured.

Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti called Tremblay’s survival a miracle when “compared to the destruction of the nose of the airplane.”

“The flight attendant’s seat is kind of a jump seat that folds down and is bolted to the wall, the same wall that the cockpit utilizes,” said Guzzetti, a former federal crash investigator.

“It’s a very robust seat,” he added. “It’s designed to withstand probably more crash loads than passenger seats because you need the flight attendant to help passengers get out of an airplane after a crash.”

Chilling Threats Unveiled: Man’s Violent Plot Against Trump Sparks Alarm

An Illinois resident has been found guilty by a federal jury for repeatedly threatening the life of former President Donald Trump through social media posts and videos. Among the evidence presented was a “selfie” video where the individual declared, “I can get a lot of f—ing guns and I am going to take care of business.”

Trent Schneider, aged 58, from Winthrop Harbor, was convicted last week on charges of making a credible threat across state lines to harm someone. This verdict came after a three-day trial in U.S. District Court in Chicago, as per a press release from the Justice Department.

U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros commented on the case, stating, “Let this conviction send a clear message that it is never acceptable to threaten a political figure or a member of the judiciary.”

Schneider was charged with posting videos on Instagram, tagging Trump Tower in Chicago and the former president’s public profiles, where he repeatedly labeled Trump a “fraud” and “coward.”

In one of the posts, Schneider wrote, “@realDonaldTrump SHOULD BE EXECUTED!!!” The caption accompanied a video in which he addressed the camera directly, threatening Trump and other public officials. “I’m tired of all you f—ing frauds,” Schneider stated in the October 16 post. “People need to f—ing die and people are going to die. F— all of you, especially you Trump.”

In another “selfie” video posted that same day, Schneider allegedly told his followers, “People like me have suffered real f—ing crimes from f—ng judges, doctors, lawyers, police. They all should be killed. All of them should be executed for what they’ve done. They need to be killed. They need to be executed, ok? …. I think it’s time. I’ve waited long enough.”

The video included a caption stating “THIS IS NOT A THREAT!!!”

Schneider posted the clip seven times in one day, each time including a tagged geolocation of Trump Tower. Prosecutors say a “concerned citizen” in Florida viewed the video and reported it to law enforcement.

Authorities interviewed Schneider about the posts on Oct. 22. The complaint describes how Schneider allegedly became “irate and started yelling” at investigators during the interview.

“Approximately one hour after I left the subject residence, [Schneider] posted a video of myself and the two other law enforcement officers who attempted to interview Schneider walking down his driveway,” the complaint says. “The post contained the same threatening caption as the previously described video.”

Authorities arrested Schneider at his home in Winthrop Harbor. He appeared in court and told the judge overseeing his case that he would “burn this castle down,” according to prosecutors.

“When asked by the judge if it was a threat, Schneider said it was not,” the complaint says.

During another court appearance, Schneider asked if he could be put up in the “Trump motel” with popcorn, according to local CBS affiliate WBBM.

This isn’t Schneider’s first run-in with the law: He has a long criminal history and allegedly posted “multiple violent messages” about public officials on various social media accounts in 2022.

“According to law enforcement reports, in December 2022, law enforcement officers arrested Schneider based on a report that Schneider made threats to ‘shoot up’ a T-Mobile store,” the complaint says.

In that case, Schneider was found to be unfit to stand trial.

Prosecutors say he used an Instagram account under the username “truthreaper888” to post his threats. When he was interviewed in 2022, authorities said he was wearing a black baseball hat with a white skull in the same style as the “Punisher” comic book character.

“Schneider is wearing the same hat in all the aforementioned videos,” the complaint says.

Nick Cannon Criticizes Democrats, Expresses Support for Trump

0

Nick Cannon, in a recent conversation with Amber Rose, strongly criticized the Democratic Party, labeling it as “the party of the KKK,” while commending the Republicans for their historical role in abolishing slavery.

During the interview, Cannon expressed admiration for Donald Trump, humorously remarking: “The guy’s shaking things up!” He followed this with a lighthearted endorsement, saying, “I’m on board with Trump.”

The 45-year-old entertainer shared these views while engaging with Rose, a vocal Republican, on his web series, Big Drive.

Rose, known for her past relationship with Kanye West and her leadership in Los Angeles’ feminist SlutWalk movement, has recently embraced conservative values. She even delivered a speech at the 2024 Republican National Convention.

Despite his criticisms of the Democrats and praise for Republicans, Cannon clarified that he doesn’t associate himself with any political party.

He invoked a quote from the renowned black intellectual WEB Du Bois, who abstained from the 1956 presidential election on the grounds ‘that no “two evils” exist. There is but one evil party with two names, and it will be elected despite all I can do or say.’

Rose noted that she had evolved politically, describing herself as a ‘former Democrat, former liberal. I was a liberal Democrat my whole life.’

Cannon, who used to be married to Mariah Carey, slyly asked if Rose had switched parties because she had earned enough money to join the ‘elite.’

Rose denied as much, saying that she had crossed the aisle because ‘Democrats don’t care about black people and they don’t care about people of color and the Republicans do, and that’s the misconception.’

‘I agree with you 100 percent,’ said Cannon. ‘People don’t know that the Democrats is the party of the KKK. People don’t know that the Republicans are the party that freed the slaves. I mean, both you and I have some conservative views. You just a little bit more outspoken about it than I am.’

Cannon was referring to the fact that the Democratic Party controlled the American South in the antebellum period, when slavery was the order of the day there, as well as during the post-Civil War era of racial segregation.

The Ku Klux Klan was founded just after the war by six Confederate veterans – one of whom spoke at the 1968 Democratic National Convention – and became the paramilitary wing of the apartheid apparatus imposed by the Southern Democrats.

In 1937, the sitting Democrat president Franklin D Roosevelt appointed erstwhile Klansman Hugo Black to the US Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party was launched in the 1850s with an abolitionist platform, and the first president it seated was Abraham Lincoln, who prosecuted the Civil War that resulted in the emancipation of the slaves.

While speaking to Rose on his web series, Cannon confessed that ‘honestly, I don’t subscribe to either party. I rock with WEB Du Bois when he said there’s no such thing as two parties. There’s just one evil party with two different names.’

He was alluding to Du Bois’ 1956 piece Why I Won’t Vote, which was published weeks before that year’s presidential election between the Republican incumbent Dwight D Eisenhower and his Democratic challenger Adlai Stevenson.

Explaining that he had voted in the past ‘for the lesser of two evils,’ Du Bois, at the age of 88, declared: ‘In 1956, I shall not go to the polls. I have not registered.’

He added: ‘I believe that democracy has so far disappeared in the United States that no “two evils” exist. There is but one evil party with two names, and it will be elected despite all I can do or say. There is no third party.’

Du Bois argued that any ‘third-party movement’ with an eye to ‘significant reform’ would ‘of necessity be Communist’ and would thus place its adherents at risk of unemployment, loss of ‘social status’ or imprisonment.

Rose responded to the Du Bois reference by saying: ‘I’m not married to any party. I voted for Donald Trump ’cause we had two options and he was definitely, by far, the better option for us, and as of now I agree with a lot of things that he’s doing.’

‘Motherf***er’s cleaning house!’ said Cannon, roaring with laughter. ‘He doing what he said he was gonna do. We got the Gulf of America now.’

Cannon, who has 12 children by six women, joked: ‘He’s like the club. He charging a $5 million bottle service fee to get into the country. I f*** with Trump.’

Newberry Resident Apprehended on Alleged Burglary and Battery Charges

0

Staff Report

NEWBERRY, Fla. – A 48-year-old man named Michael Leland Akins was taken into custody yesterday following accusations of unlawfully entering a residence and assaulting two women with a sharp metal object.

According to an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy’s report, the incident occurred around 2:13 p.m. on March 26. Akins allegedly entered the home of a former girlfriend without permission, taking advantage of an unlocked door. Once inside, he reportedly initiated an argument with her and demanded her phone, subsequently knocking it from her hands and assaulting her with multiple punches.

In an attempt to defend the first woman, another woman in the house grabbed a baseball bat and began striking Akins. In response, Akins allegedly turned his aggression towards the second woman, attacking her as well.

After stepping outside, Akins is said to have retrieved a sharp metal object and used it to strike the second woman, inflicting injuries that led her to believe her arm was broken. The first woman also suffered a knee injury, which she attributed to a fall. However, the deputy observed that the injury was consistent with being struck by a sharp metal object. Both victims described the object as large and heavy enough to potentially cause death or significant injury.

A third person in the home reportedly corroborated the accounts of the two victims.

The responding deputy reported that the first victim had marks and bruises in multiple places on her upper body, her hands were so swollen that she could barely move her fingers, and she had a deep laceration on her knee.

Akins reportedly left the property in a red truck and was found a short time later; deputies reported that it was clear from his injuries that he had been engaged in a physical altercation.

Post Miranda, Akins reportedly admitted that he had been in an altercation, but he said it was in self-defense.

Akins has been charged with burglary with battery and two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He has five local misdemeanor convictions (non-violent), all before 2006. Judge Luis Bustamante ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
