IATSE Contract Talks to Continue Thursday – Contract talks between the studios and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees were still underway late Wednesday and are expected to continue on Thursday.
As is typically the case during collective bargaining, the negotiators were abiding by a media blackout. The blackout and the fact that talks are going into a third consecutive day could be read as an encouraging sign that the sides believe that a deal can be reached.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers presented a revised proposal on Tuesday, and the union side was said to be huddling and coming up with its counteroffer. The talks involve 13 local unions representing 47,000 members — including cinematographers, editors, set dressers, prop makers, costumers, grips, and so on — and the process of including their perspectives can be time consuming. One local told members that the situation was “fluid,” and that there was nothing solid to report.
The industry is hoping to avoid a film and TV strike, which would shut down production almost entirely across the country. The IATSE membership voted overwhelmingly on Monday — by a tally of almost 99% — to authorize the first nationwide strike in the union’s 128-year history.
The union is looking for dedicated meal breaks and longer “turnaround” times between shifts and on weekends, as well as higher wages for low-paid classifications and an end to the “new media” wage discount for streaming services that have less than 20 million subscribers, which includes Apple TV Plus, Paramount Plus and Peacock.
“We have a once-in-a-generation chance to update the contracts,” said A.J. Catoline, a member of the Motion Picture Editors Guild. “We are all hanging in strong together.”
The studios have been adamantly opposed to the union’s proposal to dramatically hike the fines that producers pay for meal penalties, as a way of forcing productions to pause for lunch.
Under the current system, the studios must pay a penalty to workers for each half-hour of their shift that elapses without a meal break. Productions have generally found it more cost effective to budget in the cost of the penalties, rather than take a break, and the studio negotiators have been firm about maintaining that practice.
IATSE negotiators are also pushing hard to establish a mandatory 10-hour “turnaround” break between days worked to combat exhaustion and lack of sleep for crew members. And they are looking to establish the concept of a 54-hour weekend period for crew members on a regular schedule to offset the unpredictable schedules and long hours demanded by TV and film production.
Industry sources say the demands on working conditions have been influenced by crew experiences during COVID, when protocols and other restrictions have forced productions to move at a slower pace.
Studio sources maintain that the issues on the table are not so insurmountable as to warrant a strike. But working out the details, especially among a disparate group of locals that represent different craft and tech disciplines, is a complex and meticulous process that will take time. One source close to the situation observed on Wednesday that the lack of public comment from IATSE or AMPTP so far this week is “a very good sign.”

The leak also offers a glimpse into the wealth generated in the gaming sub-industry. A document listing Twitch’s top earners shows gross earnings since 2019 reached $9.6 million for the platform’s top account, “CriticalRole.” The account, a set of voice actors, according to their Twitch page, generated an average of $370,000 a year, according to the document. The list points to 13 accounts that have made more than $108,000 a year and at least 80 who’ve collected more than $1 million since 2019.

Mark Ostrowski, director of engineering for Check Point in the eastern U.S., said the potential breach of Twitch’s source code could open the door for future incidents.
“Silently you have hackers, competitors and users scouring the code to find flaws to exploit or gain a competitive advantage in their own development,” he said.
It is unclear whether the breach included additional personal data about Twitch users. People who use the platform should change their passwords and enable multifactor authentication on their accounts as a precaution, said Jarno Niemelä, principal researcher at Finnish cybersecurity firm F-Secure.
The incident comes after Twitch recently grappled with harassment on its platform. Last month the company sued two users in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California for allegedly sending racist, antigay, sexist and violent messages and content to others. The company said these so-called hate raids violated its terms of service, traumatized some users and forced some off the platform, according to the complaint.
The hack wasn’t a first for Twitch. In 2015 the company said some users’ information might have been accessed without authorization, including passwords, email addresses , user names, home addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth. Twitch canceled the password of those who received the email, saying the passwords are encrypted but still could have been accessed.
Streamers on Twitch typically generate revenue through advertising, sponsorships and tips from viewers upon achieving certain viewership metrics. Arlington police said there was a fight between students on the second floor of the school when one of the students pulled out a gun. At least four people were injured, according to Arlington police.
Timberview High School in Arlington went on lockdown Wednesday morning after an active shooter incident was reported there.
That student has been identified as 18-year-old Timothy George Simpkins who has been taken into police custody after a manhunt across North Texas.
Investigators said Simpkins arrived at the Arlington Police Department with his attorney and was handcuffed in the parking lot. Simpkins has been booked into the Arlington City Jail on three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Bond has been set at $75,000.
“We know that this is a tragedy, a traumatic incident for these high school kids. So, we have a tremendous amount of FBI, Arlington victim services that will hopefully talk to them and help them through this tragic incident,” Assistant chief Kolbye said.

Three people were taken to hospitals and one person suffered minor injuries, Arlington police said.
Tim Ciesco, a spokesman with Arlington police, said a 25-year-old man is listed in good condition.
A teenage female is listed in good condition, and Ciesco said is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon.
A 15-year-old boy is currently listed in critical condition, he said.
The person who had minor injuries declined to be taken to the hospital, police said.
None of the victims’ names were released.
A suspect is in custody
Timothy George Simpkins, 18, was named as a suspect in the shooting, police said.
Simpkins was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon, Arlington police said about 1:20 p.m., and was speaking to detectives.
He faces three charges of aggravated assault. His bond has been set at $75,000.
The shooting may have stemmed from a fight
A fight broke out in a class on the second floor of the school, Arlington Police Assistant Chief Keith Kolbye said. Video circulating on social media showed two males fighting in a classroom, although police could not say with complete confidence that the footage was recorded Wednesday.
Several calls were reported to police about 9:15 a.m. about a shooting. A number of law enforcement agencies responded to the calls, including police from Arlington, Grand Prairie, Mansfield and Mansfield ISD, as well as the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The school was on lockdown until about 11 a.m., Mansfield Independent School District said.
A gun was recovered
Arlington Police Assistant Chief Keith Kolbye said that Grand Prairie police recovered a .45-caliber handgun on England Parkway.
He also said that federal authorities would run ballistic analysis on it to determine whether it was used in the shooting.
Parents reunited with their students
All students — about 1,700 in total — had been evacuated from the high school by around 1:30 p.m., Kolbye said.
Students were bused to the Center for Performing Arts at 1110 W. Debbie Lane to be reunited with their parents, police said.
The district has canceled Thursday classes for Timberview High School.

Early years
Tesh was born in Garden City, New York, on Long Island, the son of Mildred (Bunny), a nurse, and John F. Tesh, a textile chemist. He graduated from Garden City High School in 1970. Playing piano and trumpet from the age of six, he studied with teachers from The Juilliard School and was named to the New York State Symphonic Orchestra in high school, while also playing the organ in a rock band.
He studied communications and music at North Carolina State University. He was also a member of the varsity lacrosse and soccer teams. While at North Carolina State, studying physics and chemistry, he took a TV and radio course, and in 1974, Tesh worked part-time reading later the news for Rick Dees at WKIX-AM/Raleigh in 1974. Bill Leslie, his roommate and anchor at WRAL, helped him get into the radio and TV field.
While in the area, Tesh worked as a news anchor in Raleigh, Orlando, Nashville, then moving to WCBS-TV in New York; this portion of his career spanned 12 years.
Entertainment Tonight and television career
His television career included a stint as a news anchor and reporter at WSM-TV in Nashville, Tennessee in the 1970s, where he often covered the same stories as Oprah Winfrey, who worked at a competing Nashville station. Later he moved from Nashville to Raleigh, to Orlando, and finally to New York’s WCBS-TV, where, at age 22, he was their youngest reporter.
He however became more well-known when he co-hosted the television show Entertainment Tonight from 1986 to 1996. Tesh also served as a sportscaster for CBS and later NBC, anchoring events such as the Tour de France bicycle race from 1983 through 1986 (Tesh has the distinction of being the anchor for the first American broadcast of this event), the US Open and gymnastics at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics.
Tesh hosted the short-lived One on One with John Tesh talk show in 1991–92 on NBC daytime and co-hosted the show John & Leeza From Hollywood with fellow Entertainment Tonight personality Leeza Gibbons from 1993–94, also on NBC daytime. Tesh in 2014, returned to syndicated television in the series Intelligence for Your Life TV, based on his radio show.
Tesh appeared in “The Icarus Factor”, an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, playing a Klingon warrior. He also appeared as himself in a 1987 episode of the daytime serial Santa Barbara.
Musical career
Yanni was putting together his first touring band to promote his album Out of Silence in 1987, as well as selections from Keys to Imagination. Being good friends, Tesh asked Yanni if he could join the band as keyboardist along with Joyce Imbesi and drummer Charlie Adams, as he’d never been onstage for a live performance, and he needed the experience.
Despite already having a full-time job with Entertainment Tonight and the long hours of rehearsal for the band, he did very well, although he did only one tour with Yanni, playing in about 12 shows, including the “1988 Concert Series”, before being replaced by Bradley Joseph. Yanni later helped Tesh get his first recording contract with Private Music.
John Tesh in the 1990s was credited with the theme music to Bobby’s World, hosted by Howie Mandel and the NBA on NBC theme, known as “Roundball Rock”. He composed the NBA on NBC theme after an idea hit him while traveling. In order to recall his idea at a later juncture, Tesh recorded the initial beat on his answering machine, leaving a message for himself.
The theme was used for the NBA on NBC before the network stopped carrying NBA games following the 2001–02 season (as well as an electric guitar-driven spinoff that was used on NBC’s WNBA telecasts from 1997 to 2002), though NBC would revive the theme for its basketball coverage during the 2008 Summer Olympics.
In August 1994, John performed at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, for his first Live at Red Rocks concert. Tesh performed with conductor John Bisharat and the 70-piece Colorado Symphony Orchestra. The concert featured Tesh playing grand piano, Charlie Bisharat playing electric violin, and Everette Harp playing alto saxophone.
Also featured were Olympic gold medal-gymnasts Nadia Comaneci (1976) and Bart Conner (1984) performing gymnastic routines specially-choreographed to Tesh’s music. After Tesh left his ten-year job as co-host for Entertainment Tonight in 1996, he turned to his career as a contemporary keyboardist. This led to him starting The John Tesh Radio Show in 2003. In 2008, he put out a piano gospel dance DVD called Alive: Music & Dance. It combines Tesh’s music, big gospel choirs, and hip-hop dance.

The program was originally syndicated by Westwood One under the name On the Air with John Tesh, albeit with a slightly different format. And then produced by Tesh with a staff of 35 and still distributed by syndicator Westwood One. In September 2016, the partnership with Westwood One was renewed in a new multi-year agreement. At the time, Westwood One indicated that it was airing on 280 radio stations.
In late 2014, a television version of these factoids, Intelligence for Your Life TV, debuted in syndication to local stations. The TV program in April 2016, was seen on 174 stations. It also features health segments hosted by his wife, Connie Sellecca, based on her own radio program, “Intelligence for Your Health”.
