Diddy Urgently Seeks Freedom in Latest Appeal Hearing

(NewsNation) — Attorneys representing the fallen music icon Sean “Diddy” Combs returned to federal court on Thursday, seeking to overturn his federal prison sentence stemming from a prostitution conviction handed down last October.

His legal team has labeled the 50-month sentence as a “travesty of justice,” voicing their disapproval of the trial judge’s decisions in recent court documents. They presented their arguments before a panel of three judges, though Combs was not present.

Defense lawyer Alexandra Shapiro contended that judges should not factor in conduct related to charges for which a defendant has been acquitted when determining a sentence, according to a report from Reuters.

“This case raises significant questions about the sanctity of jury verdicts and the public’s trust in our criminal justice system,” Shapiro stated to the appellate court judges.

The defense’s appeal highlights that Combs’ sentence for facilitating prostitution under the Mann Act is approximately four times the usual punishment for similar offenses.

The charge carries a maximum of 10 years per count. Combs was convicted on two counts but acquitted of the higher charges of racketeering and sex trafficking.

In court filings, his attorneys had said Judge Arun Subramanian improperly relied on “acquitted conduct,” which refers to the practice in which a judge takes into account behavior associated with charges a defendant was acquitted of, the outlet reported.

Combs’ team has demanded “immediate release and grant a judgment of acquittal or at least vacate and remand for resentencing.”

How does the appeals hearing work?

Combs’ defense attorney goes first, presenting oral arguments before the court. The arguments have to focus on alleged legal errors, rather than new evidence.

After the defense, New York prosecutors respond. Each side has 10 minutes to present, according to court filings.

What have Diddy’s lawyers argued?

Combs’ lawyers argued that his conviction should be overturned or that he should at least be released and resentenced to a shorter term.

Defense attorneys said in filings that Combs’ recordings of sexual encounters involving his girlfriends and male sex workers amounted to “amateur pornography” protected under the First Amendment. They also argue the term “prostitution” should be interpreted narrowly and should not apply to what they describe as voyeuristic and expressive conduct.

They say Combs’ sentence was excessive, and that Subramanian improperly increased it based on findings that the crimes involved fraud and coercion and that Combs acted as a leader or organizer of criminal activity.

When is Diddy scheduled to be released?

Combs is currently scheduled to be released on April 25, 2028, according to the Bureau of Prisons.

Since his conviction, his team has repeatedly challenged the severity of the sentence. Combs’ monthslong trial drew intense attention, focusing on allegations of human trafficking and prostitution.

At sentencing, Subramanian said the punishment would mean “hard time in prison, away from your family, friends and community,” but added that Combs “will have a life afterward.”

“Mr. Combs, you’re being sentenced for the offenses of conviction, not the crimes he was acquitted of. However, under law, the court ‘shall consider’ the nature of the offense and characteristics of the defendant,” he added.

Where is Diddy serving his prison time?

Combs was transferred to a low-security federal prison in Fort Dix, New Jersey, last year.

He was moved from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he had been housed since his 2024 arrest and conviction for prostitution-related charges late last month.

His defense team had long argued that conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn were unsafe and that he needed to be moved to a lower-risk facility.

CDC Postpones Crucial COVID Vaccine Benefits Report: What This Means for Public Health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) postponed releasing a report on the advantages of the COVID-19 vaccine, following a directive from its interim director.

According to The Washington Post, Acting CDC Director Jay Bhattacharya held back the report due to concerns regarding the methodology employed. The report, which highlighted the vaccine’s role in reducing hospitalizations and emergency room visits among healthy adults during the previous winter, was scrutinized by two scientists knowledgeable about the situation.

The CDC’s methodology, which has been a standard for evaluating vaccine efficacy against respiratory viruses, typically appears in the agency’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), as noted by the Post.

This same approach was utilized by the New England Journal of Medicine in a 2021 study assessing the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines.

The Hill has reached out to the CDC for further remarks on the matter.

The methodology used is a test-negative design, which examines individuals who are sick enough to seek care, be tested and then allow for their vaccination rates to be compared with others who test positive and those who do not, the Post wrote.

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) spokesperson Andrew Nixon told the Post that the delay was part of a “routine for CDC leadership to review and flag concerns about MMWR papers, especially relating to their methodology, leading up to planned publication.”

Nixon noted that Bhattacharya was concerned about “the observational method used in the study to calculate vaccine effectiveness and the scientific team is working to address these concerns.”

“Dr. Bhattacharya wants to make sure that the paper uses the most appropriate methodology for such a study,” the spokesperson added.

The delay follows HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s amended charter for the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices published Monday. This previous committee voted in favor of recommendations to no longer recommend the COVID-19 vaccine for everyone 6 months and older but to leave it to “individual-based decision making.” A federal judge effectively nullified committee members handpicked by the secretary.

Former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulator Vinay Prasad put new restrictions on the approval of COVID-19 vaccines by Novavax and Moderna. This caused controversy, which grew with the announcement that guidelines on vaccine approval would be more strict given the deaths of 10 children who died “after and because of a” COVID-19 vaccine, Prasad told FDA officials in a memo obtained by the Post.

Robert De Niro Faces Unprecedented Backlash: A Deep Dive into the Actor’s Controversial Actions

Robert De Niro is a household name, renowned among movie enthusiasts worldwide. His illustrious career is peppered with iconic films like “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” and “Cape Fear,” among many others. Despite his impressive contributions to cinema, a celebrity’s reputation can be significantly impacted by their off-screen persona and private life, potentially alienating fans if they feel let down or upset.

De Niro’s age-gap relationship drew criticism from fans

In the early 2020s, Robert De Niro became romantically involved with martial arts instructor Tiffany Chen. They met years earlier when Chen played a Tai Chi instructor in De Niro’s 2015 comedy film, “The Intern,” but it’s unclear exactly what led to the shift into romance.

While the couple has seemed very happy, some people took issue with the relationship’s major age gap. De Niro is around 35 to 36 years older than his partner. When they first started dating, he was about 78 years old compared to Chen’s 42. At the 2024 Oscars, host Jimmy Kimmel took a jab at De Niro’s relationship with Chen. He joked about how Jodie Foster was “young enough” to play De Niro’s daughter when she acted opposite him in “Taxi Driver” at the age of 12; in 2024, though, when Foster was in her early 60s, Kimmel said, “Now, she’s 20 years too old to be his girlfriend.” Foster, De Niro, and Chen all seemed to take the joke well, but it highlighted how much of a commonplace topic the age gap was.

For many fans, the age gap only really became an issue when De Niro welcomed his daughter Gia in early 2023, when De Niro was 79. Some fans on Reddit called the move “irresponsible” and “egotistical,” while another claimed, “Kid will probably grow up only remembering his father’s face from movies.”

De Niro shared a controversial take on parenting that people really didn’t like

Soon after Robert De Niro and Tiffany Chen’s daughter, Gia, was born, the actor opened up about raising a baby again so many years after his last child was born. Unfortunately, in early 2025, De Niro admitted something about his parenting style in an interview that really rubbed fans the wrong way.

De Niro sat down with The Guardian for a conversation about a variety of topics, including how he has parented his new daughter — or hasn’t. He said of raising a child, “It doesn’t get easier … I mean, I don’t do the heavy lifting. I’m there, I support my girlfriend. But she does the work. And we have help, which is so important.”

As you might expect, fans were a little disappointed to hear De Niro openly admit that he doesn’t help that much with parenting compared to the woman in the relationship. People debated the situation on social media, with one person on Reddit joking, “Boy math is having endless kids and doing zero parenting.” Another called the situation “embarrassing.” Then again, a few fans appreciated De Niro’s upfront take, like someone who commented, “The honesty is cracking me up. I think it’s reasonable to guess his girlfriend knew what she was getting into in this situation.”

De Niro has seven children, including Gia, and they have a massive age gap between them. The oldest is a daughter named Drena, who was born in 1967, more than 55 years before Gia was born. His second-youngest child is his daughter Helen, who turned 14 in December 2025. He also has a few grandchildren.

The actor’s production company was found liable for gender discrimination

Throughout his long career, Robert De Niro has mostly been able to stay out of any legal trouble. However, in 2019, a former employee of his production company, Canal Productions, named Graham Chase Robinsony, sued him and the company, alleging gender discrimination and retaliation. This came not long after De Niro and his company first sued her with accusations of inappropriate spending and stealing airline miles, among other things.

Robinson’s case went to trial in 2023, and De Niro testified. In the end, De Niro was not found personally liable, but his production company was. Canal Productions was ordered to pay Robinson $1.26 million. Robinson was also cleared of all accusations from De Niro’s lawsuit against her.

In her lawsuit, Robinson alleged that De Niro treated her, his executive assistant at the time, as his “office wife,” making her do stereotypically female-aligned tasks. Her lawyer claimed that this wouldn’t have happened if she were a man, according to Courthouse News Service. There were other related allegations as well, including a claim of wage difference from another employee because of her gender. These and other allegations from Robinson in the court case left a bad taste in fans’ mouths.

De Niro’s outspoken and intense political beliefs have divided fans and drawn backlash

Robert De Niro continued to act quite a bit despite his advancing age, even in his 80s, but he’s also dedicated plenty of time to speaking out about his political beliefs and criticizing Donald Trump. For some fans, this might be a green flag; to others, it made them lose respect for De Niro.

De Niro was very outspoken after Trump became the 45th president of the United States, but the actor got even louder when he became president again. During a February 2026 appearance on the podcast “The Best People With Nicole Wallace,” the Oscar winner declared, “The story is our country, and Trump is destroying it, and who knows what his reasons are, but it’s sick … We have to save the country.” He then called Trump the “enemy of this country.”

Many fans of De Niro support his views, but there has also been some backlash to his intense statements. In 2024, De Niro’s anti-Trump comments led the National Association of Broadcasters to rescind the Leadership Foundation’s Service to America Award, which it planned to give the actor. As for regular fans, one person claimed on Reddit that “his latest rants and antics just make him look like a complete fool” and said De Niro’s actions “shattered his legacy.” That’s hardly a great thing to hear for any actor. Other opinions have been split, with one person echoing many others when they wrote on Reddit, “I don’t understand why anyone cares what celebrities think,” while another pointed out that Trump is a celebrity himself.

Tensions Escalate: Israeli Airstrike Claims Lives of Lebanese Security Personnel Amidst Israel-Hezbollah Clashes

BEIRUT – Escalating hostilities erupted on Friday between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants based in Lebanon, just days before planned talks between Israel and the Lebanese government. These discussions are scheduled to commence next week.

In a recent Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon, at least 13 members of Lebanon’s State Security forces lost their lives. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for an attack on a naval base in Ashdod, an Israeli port city approximately 90 miles from the border.

Israel conducted multiple strikes in various southern Lebanese towns, including a notable one on a government facility in Nabatieh, which resulted in the death of government security officials. In retaliation, Hezbollah reported 31 assaults on northern Israel and Israeli ground troops stationed in southern Lebanon.

This latest wave of Israeli airstrikes and ground invasion into southern Lebanon follows Hezbollah’s rocket attacks on northern Israel, which were launched in support of Iran, its principal ally, on March 2.

The Lebanese Health Ministry reports a death toll of at least 1,888 people due to Israeli strikes. A devastating blitz of 100 attacks in just 10 minutes on Wednesday claimed at least 303 lives, marking the conflict’s deadliest day, with strikes hitting densely populated residential and commercial areas in central Beirut. Rescue teams continue to search for those trapped under the debris in the capital.

Meanwhile, officials at Beirut’s main government-run hospital on the southern edge of the capital fear it could be in the line of fire after the Israeli military issued an evacuation warning for the surrounding suburbs, including the busy neighborhood of Jnah where the hospital is located. Israel has launched attacks in Jnah, both with and without warning.

The World Health Organization has since called for the Rafik Hariri University Hospital to be spared from attacks and not to evacuate, and WHO officials said Friday that they received assurances that it would not be struck. The hospital has not evacuated, though staff are fearful, as getting to work now requires them to drive on roads that can be struck at any time says Dr. Mohammad Cheaito, who heads the emergency department.

“The entire zone around the hospital was threatened and deemed dangerous,” he told the AP. “But at the end of the day, we have a humanitarian duty.”

Lebanon hopes for truce while Hezbollah supporters reject talks

Lebanon’s authorities have not yet commented on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement on Thursday of the decision to go ahead with talks. Netanyahu said the talks would revolve around disarming Hezbollah and establishing “peaceful relations” between the two countries.

A Lebanese official in government familiar with the developments said that a halt in the fighting is a critical condition for the country to engage in direct talks with Israel, similar to the one between the U.S. and Iran. It has yet to appoint a representative for negotiations. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun had initially proposed the direct talks early on in the war on similar terms, at the time hoping for Israel to stop an escalation in airstrikes and to not invade the country. At the time, with only the backing of France, that failed.

On Wednesday, the U.S. and Iran announced a temporary ceasefire in the war that began on Feb. 28. It included Lebanon and other countries impacted in the wider regional conflict, mediator Pakistan announced. However, Israel — and later the United States — denied this. They want to separate the diplomatic tracks of the two wars.

Hezbollah considers Israel’s attacks on Lebanon to be a violation of the ceasefire, while Beirut, in a bid to disarm Hezbollah and assert its full sovereignty over the country, says it wants to be included in talks related to Lebanon.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Kassem in a statement broadcast Thursday did not directly mention the prospect of Israel-Lebanon talks, but called on the Lebanese government to “stop giving free concessions” to Israel.

Dozens of supporters of the Iran-backed group protested outside of the Lebanese prime minister’s office in central Beirut. They see the scheduled direct talks as a surrender to Israel, which says its troops will stay in the country indefinitely.

“Our blood has been spilled on this land, and our state is conspiring against us,” said protester Hassan Shuaib. “Our state wants to kill us; our state wants to strip us of our weapons.”

Search Intensifies for Missing Rocket Scientist Tied to Crucial Defense Innovations

0

The mystery surrounding the disappearance of a rocket scientist has deepened, revealing intriguing connections to a unique patent linked to sophisticated U.S. launch systems.

Monica Jacinto Reza, a 60-year-old aerospace expert, vanished on June 22 of last year while hiking in the San Gabriel Wilderness area within the Angeles National Forest. She was last observed at approximately 9:10 a.m. local time.

Reports from the forum EISPIRATEN tell of a man who was hiking roughly 30 feet ahead of Reza on the trail leading to Waterman Mountain’s summit. He turned back only to find that she had mysteriously disappeared without a trace.

Fellow hikers note that Reza was equipped with a backpack, which is thought to have contained several liters of water, at the time of her disappearance.

The investigation has taken on new significance as public records shed light on Reza’s involvement in developing cutting-edge aerospace materials associated with high-performance propulsion systems. This revelation raises questions about whether her professional work could be linked to her sudden disappearance.

Records show she is the only surviving co-creator of a 2010 patent filed with Dallis Ann Hardwick, who died of cancer in 2014, for a specialized metal designed to resist burning while remaining incredibly strong under extreme heat.

She was also credited as a co-inventor of Mondaloy, a nickel-based superalloy later used in key components of advanced propulsion systems developed through US Air Force and NASA-backed research programs.

Reza spent decades working at Rocketdyne, later part of Aerojet Rocketdyne, a major aerospace contractor involved in government propulsion programs, while retired US Major General William Neil McCasland, who oversaw related Air Force research portfolios, also went missing in June 2025.

Reza and McCasland are among nine recent cases involving scientists with ties to aerospace, defense or nuclear research whose deaths or disappearances have drawn public attention.

Mondaloy was later used in the development of the AR1 rocket engine, a US-built system designed to replace Russian-made RD-180 engines previously used on United Launch Alliance rockets, part of a broader effort to reduce America’s reliance on foreign propulsion systems.

Unlike older materials that were either strong but prone to burning or burn-resistant but weak, the alloy created by Reza and her colleague was designed to do both – remain durable while resisting ignition under extreme stress.

The metal is primarily made of nickel, strengthened with smaller amounts of cobalt, chromium, aluminum and titanium, allowing it to withstand the intense heat and pressure produced during rocket launches.

According to the patent, the material was intended for use in critical engine components such as turbines, ducts and fuel systems, where failure could lead to catastrophic damage.

Materials like Mondaloy are used in rocket engines that power launches carrying military satellites, missile-warning systems and other highly sensitive payloads into orbit, missions known as national security launches because they support US defense and intelligence systems.

Reza’s work received funding and development support from the US Air Force Research Laboratory, which was commanded at one point by retired US Major General William Neil McCasland.

McCasland later went missing in June 2025, prompting a separate investigation that remains ongoing.

According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, McCasland was last seen speaking with a repairman at his home around 10am before his wife left the residence about an hour later.

When she returned shortly after noon, the house was empty, with his phone, prescription glasses and wearable devices left behind.

Investigators noted that his hiking boots and a .38-caliber revolver were missing and he was reported missing later that afternoon.

Search teams later discovered a US Air Force sweatshirt roughly one mile from the residence, though officials have not confirmed whether it belonged to McCasland.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed foul play in the case, and the investigation remains active.

Another mysterious case involves Michael David Hicks, a research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who died on July 30, 2023, at the age of 59. Officials have not publicly alleged foul play in his death.

Reports also highlighted the death of NASA scientist Frank Maiwald, who died on July 4, 2024, in Los Angeles at the age of 61. Authorities confirmed that no autopsy was performed and the cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Anthony Chavez, a former employee at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), disappeared on May 4, 2025. Police in Los Alamos said the search for Chavez, 79, remains ongoing with no new information released nearly a year later.

Since 2024, several additional scientists connected to aerospace research have died under separate circumstances.

Melissa Casias has not been seen since June 26 last year, when her family said she uncharacteristically decided to work from home, but was last spotted miles from their house walking alone without her wallet, phone or keys.

Casias, 54, was an administrative assistant at LANL.

The news came about astrophysicist Carl Grillmair, 67, who was shot and killed at his California home on February 16.

The California Institute of Technology researcher had worked on major NASA-supported telescope missions, including the Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and NEO Surveyor programs.

While serving as commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory, McCasland oversaw programs related to space surveillance and infrared tracking systems.

Two additional researchers in Massachusetts were also found dead in separate incidents. Nuno Loureiro, a scientist working on nuclear fusion research, was shot in his Brookline home last year.

Jason Thomas, a pharmaceutical researcher studying cancer treatments at Novartis, was later found dead in a Wakefield lake on March 17 after disappearing months earlier.

Authorities have not publicly linked the cases, and officials in several investigations have said there is no confirmed evidence suggesting foul play beyond the circumstances already reported.

A Wisconsin woman appeared in court this week as her legal journey continues over charges related to the fatal stabbing of her fiancé last year.

Tonia Piontek, aged 46, faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, with additional allegations of domestic violence and use of a deadly weapon, following the death of her 41-year-old fiancé in April 2025. The victim’s identity remains undisclosed to the public. During a court session in Brown County, Wisconsin, on Thursday, local Fox affiliate WLUK revealed that Piontek’s defense lawyer is negotiating a plea agreement but is awaiting an evaluation from a domestic violence expert.

As reported in a criminal complaint accessed by local ABC affiliate WBAY, Piontek claimed that she acted in self-defense, using a knife during the altercation.

Further insights into the complaint, shared by local CBS affiliate WFRV, indicate that Piontek was the one who called 911 at 10 p.m. on April 13, 2025. During the emergency call, she reportedly stated, “I just stabbed my boyfriend, I don’t think he’s okay. Someone needs to get here now!”

In the call, Piontek described a fight with her fiancé, saying, “He came at me,” and explained that she often kept a knife nearby for protection. She added, “I didn’t know what else to do, he’s a lot bigger than me.”

Piontek told dispatchers that she and her fiance had been drinking that day when they started arguing before the alleged stabbing. Police said Piontek’s neighbor heard the fight, as well as a door slamming, and someone stomping around the home. The same neighbor told police that he often heard the couple arguing and had called 911 on them before.

When police arrived at the scene, they found Piontek, who rolled up her sleeves to show them bruising on her forearms. She described the bruises as “just normal for me.” According to the complaint, Piontek told police that she had friends who were lawyers and would not make any comments until she had an attorney.

Police said they found Piontek’s fiance on the floor of the home’s kitchen with a knife in his neck and lying in a pool of blood. While the complaint said the knife was found in the man’s neck, the autopsy stated that he died of a stab wound to the chest. Piontek allegedly told police that she used a “pastry chef knife” in the stabbing.

Throughout her court proceedings, Piontek’s defense attorney argued that his client was a victim of domestic violence. At a previous hearing in December 2025, the attorney said he wanted to provide testimony from a domestic violence expert before a plea agreement was reached.

Piontek is charged with first-degree intentional homicide with modifiers for domestic violence and use of a deadly weapon. She is still in custody at the Brown County Jail, where she is being held on $1 million cash bond. Her next court appearance was scheduled for Aug. 17.
