Lake Mead’s Historic Low Sparks Urgent Calls for Colorado River Conservation

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – In a troubling marker for the Colorado River system, Lake Mead has sunk to an unprecedented low. This vital reservoir, which stands as the largest in the United States, has not been at such a depleted level since its filling nearly 90 years back.

Federal data reveals that on Friday, Lake Mead’s water level dipped to 1,040.4 feet (317.1 meters) above sea level. This places it just a hair under the previous record of 1,040.58 feet (317.27 meters), which had been set on July 28, 2022. Nestled on the border of Arizona and Nevada, just outside of Las Vegas, the reservoir is raising concerns among scientists and policymakers alike.

This development comes after an exceptionally dry winter, which yielded the smallest amount of snowpack ever recorded in the Colorado River Basin. This snowpack is crucial, as its meltwaters provide sustenance for the Colorado River—an essential water source for agriculture, industry, wildlife, power generation, and over 40 million residents spread across seven U.S. states, tribal nations, and Mexico.

Just a week ago, federal authorities proposed a short-term plan in an attempt to avert a looming catastrophe on this vital waterway. The intervention follows an impasse among river-reliant states—California, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Utah—over long-term water allocation strategies. The federal proposal suggests that California, Nevada, and Arizona should equally bear the brunt of necessary water reductions.

For decades, unchecked water use coupled with a harsh climate and rising temperatures have steadily siphoned water out of Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the nation’s second-largest reservoir. Currently, both reservoirs, central to the Colorado River system, register at their lowest levels since nearly 70 years ago.

To protect the strained system’s ability to produce hydropower, federal officials said Thursday that they will not release cool Lake Powell water from Glen Canyon Dam in northern Arizona to protect a threatened native fish whose habitat is between the reservoirs.

Severe drought in 2022 on Lake Mead, which is held back by the Hoover Dam, exposed human remains and forced water officials in Las Vegas to pump water from deeper within the reservoir to continue to supply water to millions of people.

Belly-Blasting Chair Exercises: Transform Your Core Faster Than Crunches After 55

0

Forget the crunches: Discover four chair-based exercises perfect for tackling belly sag, especially if you’re 55 and over.

>

Crunches might be the first thing that comes to mind when aiming to firm up the midsection. While they help strengthen your abdominal muscles and are a staple in many core routines, significant change often requires a more holistic approach to your workouts.

This is where chair exercises come in handy, particularly for those over 55. By incorporating a chair, you gain stability, streamline your setup, and can focus on core strengthening without the hassle of repeatedly transitioning from the floor. These exercises seamlessly integrate leg work, hip movements, and targeted abdominal training, making them surprisingly accessible.

The beauty of this workout style lies in its simplicity and ease of commencement. It isn’t about enduring a marathon exercise session or complicating core training. Instead, it offers targeted midsection workouts complemented by leg involvement to ramp up overall exertion.

Incorporate these four chair exercises into your routine three to five times weekly. Focus on controlled movements and maintaining a steady pace. Enhance results by coupling the regimen with daily walks and straightforward nutritional practices.

Chair Box Squat

The chair box squat helps trim belly sag by bringing more muscle into the workout. Your legs do the main work, while your core helps keep your torso steady through each rep. That makes it more useful for overall body-composition goals than a routine built only around small ab movements. It also builds strength for one of the most common daily patterns: sitting down and standing back up.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, core.

How to Do It

  1. Stand in front of a sturdy chair with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Push your hips back toward the chair.
  4. Lower until your hips lightly touch the seat.
  5. Press through your feet to stand tall.
  6. Repeat with smooth control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps.

Best Variations: Higher-chair box squats, slow-tempo chair squats, chair squats with a pause.

Form Tip: Touch the chair lightly without dropping your full weight into the seat.

4 Daily Exercises That Restore Back Muscle Faster Than Gym Machines After 50

Seated Knee Tucks

Seated knee tucks give your abs direct work while keeping the chair as your base. They’re a good fit for trimming belly sag because they train the front of your core without needing crunches on the floor. This move also makes the routine feel more active, since your legs move while your midsection stays engaged. It’s simple, but it can build a strong burn quickly when you keep the reps controlled.

Muscles Trained: Abs, hip flexors, deep core.

How to Do It

  1. Sit near the front edge of a sturdy chair.
  2. Hold the sides of the chair lightly.
  3. Lean back slightly while keeping your chest lifted.
  4. Lift both knees toward your torso.
  5. Lower your feet back toward the floor.
  6. Repeat without rushing.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps.

Best Variations: Single-leg knee tucks, smaller-range knee tucks, slower knee tucks.

Form Tip: Keep your torso tall enough that your abs do the work without your lower back taking over.

Seated Flutter Kicks

Seated flutter kicks add steady core tension to the routine. Your abs have to stay active while your legs move in a small, quick pattern, which gives the exercise a different feel from knee tucks. This is useful after 55 because it trains endurance through the midsection without needing a long plank or a full crunch sequence. It also keeps the workout moving, which helps the session feel more like a real routine.

Muscles Trained: Abs, hip flexors, deep core.

How to Do It

  1. Sit near the front edge of a sturdy chair.
  2. Hold the sides of the chair for support.
  3. Lean back slightly and brace your core.
  4. Extend your legs forward.
  5. Lift one foot slightly as the other lowers.
  6. Continue alternating small kicks.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 20 to 30 seconds.

Best Variations: Bent-knee flutter kicks, single-leg flutter kicks, shorter flutter-kick intervals.

Form Tip: Keep the kicks small so your abs can stay engaged the whole time.

4 Standing Exercises That Firm Outer Thighs Faster Than Leg Presses After 60

Chair Reverse Lunge

Chair reverse lunges bring a stronger lower-body challenge into the workout. That matters for belly-sag goals because larger muscles help increase the overall demand of the session. The chair gives you balance support while each leg works on its own, which can make the exercise more approachable after 55. It’s also a great way to build strength that supports walking, stairs, and standing with more confidence.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, calves, core.

How to Do It

  1. Stand beside a sturdy chair and hold it lightly with one hand.
  2. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart.
  3. Step one foot back.
  4. Bend both knees into a comfortable lunge.
  5. Press through your front foot to return to standing.
  6. Alternate sides with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 to 3 sets of 6 to 10 reps per side.

Best Variations: Small step-back lunges, supported split squats, reverse lunges with a pause.

Form Tip: Use the chair for balance while letting your front leg handle the work.

The 12-Minute Morning Routine That Fights Muscle Loss Better Than Protein Shakes After 50

How to Make These Chair Exercises Work After 55

This routine works best when it becomes part of your week instead of something you only do when motivation spikes. Trimming belly sag after 55 usually takes a mix of core training, strength work, daily movement, and nutrition habits you can repeat. These chair exercises help because they’re simple enough to use often and active enough to feel worthwhile. Start with two rounds if you’re new to the routine, then add a third round once the workout feels more familiar. Keep the goal clear: steady effort, better control, and enough consistency for your body to respond.

  • Use the routine in the morning: A short session early in the day can make it easier to stay consistent.
  • Pair it with walking: Daily steps help support the body-composition changes behind trimming belly sag.
  • Keep the chair sturdy: A stable chair makes the whole workout feel safer and smoother.
  • Progress slowly: Add reps, seconds, or another round before making the exercises harder.
  • Support it with protein and hydration: Simple nutrition habits can make the work you’re doing show up more clearly over time.

Amanda Kloots Guides DWTS Contestants Yearly with Advice

Amanda Kloots, although she has retired from the glitzy world of ballroom dancing, remains a guiding light for fresh faces stepping onto the stage of Dancing With the Stars. Her experience and infectious enthusiasm make her a favorite confidante for newcomers.

“I know a few people who are jumping into season 35, mainly because it seems like folks reach out when they’re mulling over the decision: ‘Should I do this show?'” Kloots, 44, exclusively shared with Us during the promotion of her podcast, “Good Grief with Amanda Kloots.” She says, “I always tell them, ‘Absolutely, go for it. It will be the most challenging yet rewarding thing you ever undertake. Trust me, you won’t look back with any regrets.'”

Kloots kept a playful secret about who reached out to her for advice, although the show has already confirmed the participation of four contestants: the vibrant Love Island alum Maura Higgins, spirited Summer House star Ciara Miller, the energetic Savannah Bananas’ Jackson Olson, and Guillermo Rodriguez, the beloved sidekick from Jimmy Kimmel. As anticipation grows, ABC remains tight-lipped about additional celebrities or professional dancers slated for the series, set to kick off on September 15.

“Each year since my own stint on the show, at least one person reaches out to ask, ‘Did you genuinely enjoy it? Was it really worth it?’ My answer is always the same: ‘If you don’t sign up for this experience, you’re definitely missing out,’” she passionately explained.

What to Know About Season 35 of 'Dancing With the Stars' So Far: Cast, Premiere Date and More

The stage is eagerly being set for the 35th season of Dancing With the Stars. In a lively announcement coinciding with Hulu’s Get Real House event in April, it was confirmed that Summer House’s Ciara Miller and Love Island’s Maura Higgins would take on the exciting dance challenge. Shortly thereafter, Savannah Bananas second baseman Jackson Olson also donned his dancing shoes, as the roster of competitors continues to grow.

Kloots appeared on season 30 of the hit ABC competition show, where she was partnered with Alan Bersten. The pair ultimately placed fourth and lost to champions Iman Shumpert and pro Daniella Karagach. Kloots, however, would be game to try her hand at an all-star season.

“I would be there. I’m sure [casting director and executive producer] Deena Katz and ABC know that I would be there in a heartbeat,” she told Us. “I mean, it would be a dream come true. I’m so proud of that show.”

Kloots went on to gush about the series recently receiving an Emmy nomination, which she said was “so well deserved” given its “wonderful atmosphere.”

“Everybody’s rooting for each other,” she said. “There’s no jealousy or cattiness or fights or mean spirited. Everybody’s there to help each other. It’s such a wonderful experience. I would love to go back.”

While not quite an all-star season, Kloots did return to the ballroom for DWTS Con in Palm Springs earlier this month and performed a number alongside Bersten, 32, and former champ Hannah Brown.

“It was so fun, oh my gosh!” Kloots said. “I love that show so much and dancing has always been a part of my life. But then I packed my shoes away. When I got to do that show, it was such a part of my healing journey. I am forever grateful. So to be back with that family — and I say family because they are all those pros are incredible and they now have children. Everybody’s in the dressing room and playing with everybody, and they’re all so kind and so supportive and they work so hard. Then all the celebrities that came back are like me, they just love this show so much and have been so grateful to be a part of it. It’s just sort of like this big love fest amidst this crazy dancing.”

Days after appearing at the fan convention, Kloots launched the “Good Grief With Amanda Kloots” podcast with Dear Media. Kloots, whose husband Nick Cordero died in 2020 after facing COVID-19 complications, hopes to feature candid conversations about facing significant changes in life. (Kloots and Cordero shared son Elvis, whom they welcomed in 2019.)

“It’s been six years since I lost my husband. I do a lot of therapy, from science-backed therapy to very woo-woo — I live in Los Angeles, so I’ve done almost all of it,” she shared. “It was in this last year that I had this kind of turnaround in therapy with my relationship to grief.”

Kloots explained that she helps “a lot of widows” who she takes “under [her] wing and try to help because widows did that” for her when she was “newly grieving.”

“We all talk about how to survive grief in the beginning, but we don’t really talk about the beauty and the things that grief can teach us because we live with it,” she noted. “We live with it for the rest of our lives. It isn’t going anywhere, which was my misconception. I thought I could heal it, and I’d get my graduate certificate. And it isn’t that. It’s how you learn to live with it, and most importantly, how you can learn to love yourself again in this grief. So that’s hopefully the message of the podcast.”

Tiny Island’s Census Uncovers Hidden Stories Beyond Numbers

0

Nestled in the vast expanses of the South Pacific Ocean, a diminutive island covering a mere 35 square kilometers is set to make its mark in the 2026 Australian Census.

Home to approximately 2,100 inhabitants, Norfolk Island proudly carries the distinction of being labeled “one of the most beautiful places on Earth”, a sentiment echoed by Nicholas Mostardo, the acting general manager of the Norfolk Island Regional Council (NIRC).

Mostardo, who relocated to this captivating subtropical island earlier this year, believes its stunning natural beauty and tightly-knit community create an experience unmatched anywhere else on the globe.

“It’s a place rich in natural splendor, inhabited by warm-hearted and generous people. In my experience, it stands as one of the most exceptional locales worldwide,” Mostardo commented to SBS News.

NIRC is navigating through a period of administration until 31 December 2026. This phase is part of Norfolk Island’s journey towards what the Australian government describes as a “new bespoke governance model”.

In the interim, Mostardo has been liaising with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to help ensure Norfolk Island’s population is recorded during the Census of Population and Housing on 11 August.

“We’ve had several visits from the ABS zone manager and the assistant director of Census Mainstream and Enumeration. They’ve been coming out to ensure the community is well engaged and consulted on completing the form.”

A decade in the making

The Census has been conducted in Australia for more than a century, but this will be the third time Norfolk Island has ever participated in the survey. It also marks a decade since the Australian government passed reforms that led to the island being included in the Census.

It’s a change that was considered contentious by some.

In 1914, Norfolk became an Australian territory, but the “precise constitutional arrangement was not clear at the time”, according to an online statement by legal advisory firm Norfolk Advisory.

Around 65 years later, the Australian parliament allowed Norfolk Islanders to form a limited self-government. Following governance reforms passed in 2015 and implemented in 2016, the Australian government assumed responsibility for the island’s governance.

In 2023, Norfolk Island regained some involvement in its affairs through the establishment of a new advisory body, the Norfolk Island Governance Committee. The island is now considered an external territory of Australia.

This complex history has divided some people — including those of Pitcairn descent — about whether Norfolk Island should be counted during Australia’s Census.

Pitcairn Islanders were a genetic mix of Tahitian and English, the English part being direct descendants from the mutineers on the HMS Bounty — a bloodline that still runs strong today. In 1856, 194 people arrived on Norfolk Island from the neighbouring Pitcairn Islands.

According to information shared with SBS News by Norfolk Island People for Democracy (NIPD), Pitcairn Islanders have a distinct culture and speak the Norf’k-Pitcairn language (also known as ‘Pitkern-Norf’k’ or ‘Norfolk’), which blends 18th-century English and Tahitian.

NIPD has previously petitioned for the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonisation to recognise and list Norfolk Island as a non-self-governing territory. The group has described Australia’s relationship with the island as a “bloodless genocide”.

Norfolk Island ancestry

The ABS did not provide a statement to SBS News regarding Norfolk Island’s participation in the Census. It did refer to online information available about how to complete the Census on Norfolk Island.

The ABS outlines that “ancestry data reported for Norfolk Island from the 2021 Census is not comparable with ancestry data reported from censuses prior to and including 2011”. That’s because of differences in the way the ancestry question was asked.

The 2011 Norfolk Island Census asked a specific question about whether a person was of Pitcairn descent. It reported that 38.4 per cent of the population identified as having Pitcairn descent.

In Australia’s 2016 Census, people could identify up to two responses when asked about their ancestry, with 29.6 per cent of usual residents indicating they had Pitcairn ancestry. During the 2021 Census, this decreased to 25.1 per cent.

The ABS notes that the number of people with Pitcairn ancestry increased from 484 in 2016 to 550 in 2021. This year, people can list up to four responses on the ancestry question.

Mostardo told SBS News that the ABS has made “some new arrangements” to provide a “better reflection of responses for people that live on Norfolk Island”. He believes that has alleviated “some of the concerns that the community had [about the ancestry question] with prior censuses”.

“The Census is important to Norfolk. You know, it really will assist us and the Commonwealth government with funding arrangements for the island; assisting with things like strategic planning and economic capacity as well,” he said.

At the edge of the cliff on Norfolk Island, there are tall pine trees, rocks and turquoise-blue water.

The Council of Elders, Norfolk Island — which serves as the elected leaders and custodians of traditional knowledge and expressions of culture on Norfolk Island — has posted content on social media regarding the Census.

In response to one Facebook user who questioned why Norfolk Island was included in the Australian Census, the group responded: “In 2016, when the ABS took over the Census, there were many shortfalls for Norfolk. The change made long-term planning for Norfolk difficult.

“As the Council of Elders’ role is to advocate for the community, it became evident that we need to know more about the composition of our community today. The Council of Elders has engaged with the ABS to try to achieve this.”

Households on Norfolk Island can complete the Census online or by using the paper form provided.

Paper forms can be returned to the Supper Room on the island during the morning from 10 August to 16 August. Otherwise, Census field officers will return to collect forms in the provided privacy envelope.

The ABS specified that forms should not be mailed back.

California Fire Captain’s Wife Confesses to Murder Following Capture in Mexico, Linked to Previous Spousal Death

0

In a striking turn of events, a woman from California has admitted to the murder of her fire captain spouse, marking yet another chapter in a turbulent history involving violent crimes with previous convictions.

On Tuesday, 54-year-old Yolanda Olejniczak Marodi entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder charges regarding the tragic demise of her wife, Rebecca “Becky” Marodi. At 49, Becky was an esteemed firefighter based in California who tragically lost her life to a fatal stabbing incident at their shared residence in Ramona during February of 2025.

In the courtroom, when queried by the judge about her plea to the charge of second-degree murder, Marodi responded affirmatively with: “Guilty.”

This plea deal also included Marodi’s acknowledgment of a previous serious felony related to the 2000 stabbing death of her then-husband, James Joseph Olejniczak, highlighting a disturbing pattern in her criminal past.

She pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in that case in 2003 before her release in 2013, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Rebecca Marodi, a veteran Cal Fire captain, suffered multiple stab wounds during the Feb. 17, 2025 attack.

Prosecutors said surveillance footage captured her fleeing the home as Yolanda Marodi pursued her. Rebecca was found with several injuries to her neck, chest and back that authorities said were consistent with a stabbing.

Investigators later alleged that Marodi fled to Mexico after the killing, where she remained for more than a month before being arrested in Mexicali and returned to the United States.

Marodi had initially pleaded not guilty to Rebecca’s murder before changing her plea to guilty to second-degree murder.

She is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 2.

CAL Fire Riverside acknowledged Rebecca Marodi’s death and said it is a “profound loss.”

“Her legacy of mentorship, service, and dedication will be felt for years to come. Her passing is a profound loss to her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her,” the department wrote in a previous statement on their Facebook page.

Unveiling Melatonin’s Effects on Children’s Sleep and Growth

0

Nearly 50% of parents in the United States reach for melatonin to help their children drift off to sleep. But is this popular sleep aid potentially disrupting rather than fostering rest?

Emerging research points out a concerning possibility that melatonin, trailing only multivitamins in popularity among children’s supplements, might be cutting short the crucial sleep phase vital for memory, learning, and emotional growth.

In the past two decades, the use of melatonin has surged dramatically. While it’s often marketed as a natural remedy for getting kids to sleep, there are increasing worries about its prolonged use and potential side effects, including nightmares.

A major issue with melatonin is its status as a supplement, meaning it doesn’t undergo FDA evaluation for safety or effectiveness. This has led to inconsistencies in dosages, with actual amounts ranging from 74% to nearly 3.5 times what the label claims.

“Melatonin is a hormone that our bodies naturally produce,” explained Dr. Daniel Bigman, a child and adolescent psychiatry expert at Northwell’s Zucker Hillside Hospital and Cohen Children’s Medical Center. “So, introducing anything into a child’s system that could alter hormonal balance might trigger a domino effect on various bodily functions.”

How melatonin might affect kids’ REM sleep

The new study looked at how 684 children slept with a polysomnogram, which looks at different stages of sleep.

“It looks at if our sleep is interrupted, how we breathe, and so forth,” Bigman said. “This study looked at the difference between children taking melatonin and those who do not.”

Researchers found that children who took melatonin had less rapid eye movement sleep, aka REM sleep, overall compared to kids who didn’t take the supplement.

“REM sleep is also thought of as the dream stage, or the dream sleep, because this is where most of us will experience dreams,” Bigman said.

More importantly, there’s evidence that this stage of sleep is crucial for memory, learning, and emotional development. Research indicates drugs like antidepressants and ADHD medication that affect REM sleep could hurt young brains’ development for this reason.

“While it’s hard to understand exactly the reason why, or if the melatonin was even the primary cause, I think what’s more important is that that there potentially is a relationship.”

Using melatonin

Melatonin is sometimes recommended for kids struggling with sleep — but Bigman notes “there should be caution because we don’t know everything about its effects.”

With limited FDA involvement in regulation of supplements like melatonin, “it is hard for us to know to quantify what it is that’s happening … as well as its long-term effects, because there isn’t robust data to truly understand how melatonin affects children’s brains, specifically in sleep.”

There’s also the question of whether kids getting melatonin actually need the pill or gummy. Things like iron deficiency, enlarged tonsils, and even nightmares could be keeping the child from a good nights rest. And melatonin won’t necessarily fix the problem.

Bigman says he’ll only recommend melatonin in the event a child is diagnosed to have a circadian rhythm or sleep-wake cycle disorder. This is when they’re staying awake long into the night and sleeping during the day.

“When we do prescribe melatonin, the doses are very small or where the times given are very strategically done. For example, sometimes we dose melatonin four, five, or six hours before the time we want them to sleep at a very, very low dose,” he explains.

“Giving a large amount of melatonin may not be beneficial just because we want someone or a child to sleep.”

Instead, the first line of defense should be sleep hygiene. That’s a consistent bedtime with a good routine that signals the body it’s time to wind down — like a bath or relaxing without a device. Screens should be put away 30 minutes to an hour before bed.

And kids should also have a sleep-friendly space to get some shut eye: somewhere quiet and dark. Bigman also suggests looking at physical activity, sugar, and junk food intake.

“All these things could potentially contribute to difficulty with sleep,” he said. Parents should shoot for their kids to get eight to 10 hours of sleep a night.

Tragic Accident: Father of Five Killed by Teen Driver

0

Tragedy struck when a father of five lost his life in a collision with a stolen vehicle driven by a 13-year-old boy, with six other teenagers packed inside, authorities report.

The fatal accident unfolded in the early morning hours, just after 5 a.m. on Tuesday, at a busy intersection located in Germantown, Maryland. This suburban area lies just a short distance north of the nation’s capital, Washington, DC.

The victim, identified as 58-year-old William Vance Payne II, was en route to his job at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). A dedicated mechanical engineer, Payne was approaching retirement, according to statements from his grieving family.

A mere 10 minutes from his destination, Payne’s Toyota Matrix met with disaster. It was violently struck by a stolen white Kia Optima crammed with seven youths. Occupants included four young girls aged 14, 14, 13, and 12, alongside three boys whose ages were 15, 13, and 12, as outlined by the Montgomery County Police Department.

Responding swiftly to the 5:25 a.m. call, emergency crews arrived to find Payne deceased amid the wreckage. Both vehicles bore the scars of ‘extensive damage,’ police confirmed.

The juveniles, whose identities were not disclosed, were transported to several trauma centers in the area. The 13-year-old driver of the Kia was in critical but stable condition, police said.

Footage of the crash scene taken by NBC Washington shows Payne’s Toyota with severe damage to its broadsides and the white Kia flipped upside down.

No arrests were made immediately after the crash. The Montgomery County Department of Police Collision Reconstruction Unit’s investigation into the collision may take several weeks to months to complete, police said.

Charges in the case will be determined by the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office after it is presented with evidence.

A witness had gone to a police station in person to report that a vehicle was driving erratically in the area, but by the time they told police, the crash had already occurred, NBC Washington reported.

The Kia with the seven teenagers inside was reported stolen a few hours after the crash.

Montgomery County Police Officer Shiera Goff told NBC Washington that several of the juveniles in the stolen car were not wearing their seatbelts, and some were sitting on each other’s laps.

‘At this age, they’re not supposed to be driving. You do not have a license at the age of 15. Right now, I would say, parents, just make sure you know where your children are,’ Goff told the outlet.

Payne had worked for NIST for 29 years, most recently as a mechanical engineer in the Equipment Performance Group of the Building Energy and Environment Division of the Engineering Laboratory, according to his profile on the NIST website.

His work focused on making residential heat pumps and air conditioning units more efficient and reliable.

‘Our thoughts are with Vance’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,’ a statement NIST shared with NBC Washington said in part.

Payne had three young children, including two girls and a boy, as well as two adult daughters. He worked at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Thefts of certain 2010 to 2021 Kia models have surged in recent years after a TikTok trend exposing the ease with which they could be stolen due to a critical design flaw went viral around 2022.

Insurance companies in 2023 received over ten times more Kia and Hyundai theft claims than the three previous years after social media videos showed the cars being stolen and driven haphazardly by joyriders as young as 12.

In May 2023, Kia and Hyundai agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit worth around $200 million over the rampant car thefts.

Although the settlement brought free hardware retrofits to owners in an attempt to reduce the carjackings, police still encourage physical steering wheel locks and software updates as the problem continues to persist in 2026.
