A father who rushed into action after a teenage gunman entered his daughters’ elementary school was heard desperately calling 911 for help.

Kaylub Giamanco, 36, later shot Griffin John II, 16, dead after the teenager killed three children with special needs and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, on October 15.

Giamanco had previously recalled that he was driving home from lunch when he saw John firing at a red vehicle ahead of him. The teenager then threw his rifle over a fence and moved toward the school.

After witnessing the attack, Giamanco took his handgun from the center console, loaded the magazine and called 911.

As soon as the dispatcher answered, newly released audio captured the father of two saying: “Oh my God.”

“Someone’s at the school, at my daughters’ school with a gun,” he said. “I have a gun and I will shoot them right now if I have to.”

The dispatcher urged Giamanco not to intervene and instructed him to wait for police.

But Giamanco continued speaking over the dispatcher as his frustration and fear grew.

“This is my daughters’ school,” he shouted, before adding: “I’m about to go kill this kid.”

The dispatcher kept Giamanco on the line, asking about the suspect’s race and whether he had entered the school.

Giamanco confirmed that the gunman was inside the elementary school and said he could hear shots being fired.

“God d*** it, they’re f***ing shooting people,” he said.

The dispatcher continued seeking information and told him that “we have help en route.”

By then, however, Giamanco had stopped speaking with the sheriff’s office and was running toward the building.

Inside, a teacher attempted to stop John by throwing her phone at him, tackling him and struggling to take control of his rifle, KATU reports.

Giamanco then entered through an open window, made his way to the special needs classroom and fired his weapon, bringing the shooter down.

Giamanco later described the teacher, certified learning specialist Cassidy Schutz, as a “real hero,” saying her actions created the opportunity for him to shoot the attacker.

Schutz said in a statement last week that she could not find words to express the depth of her sadness.

“This is not a story. This is a horrific and heartbreaking tragedy and it is our real lives,” she said. “My thoughts are with those who were lost, their families, those who were hurt and those who were there that day. My heart is with you.”

She said her attention was focused on the families, the school “and my own healing.”

A second teacher in the classroom, Becky Drury, previously said she had no opportunity to shelter the children when John entered.

Drury said she attempted to close the door behind her, but John had already reached the room.

“Before I could do anything more, he shot me at close range, and I fell to the ground,” Drury recalled.

She was shot in her left hand and right arm. Unable to stand, Drury said she pretended to be dead in the hope that John would not fire at her again.

Seven-year-old Saylor Graham was also injured. Five-year-old Rhoam Summer and teacher Megan Lambert were killed, along with two other students who have not been publicly identified.

The motive for the attack remains unknown. John had previously attended the school and had reportedly been bullied at times.

He came from a troubled family background and had been assaulted at least twice.

John used a firearm purchased by his mother around his 16th birthday in August. Investigators remain uncertain how he obtained the ammunition and have described the case as “very active.”

Giamanco has a concealed-carry license, which he holds to protect his family.

Social commentator Prue MacSween has launched a fierce criticism of Anthony Albanese, accusing the Prime Minister of appearing detached from the financial struggles facing Australians while attending a Commonwealth leaders’ meeting in the Caribbean.

Albanese spent the week in Antigua at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, alongside King Charles III, Queen Camilla and other international leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Meanwhile, households across Australia are under mounting financial strain after the Reserve Bank delivered its fifth interest rate increase of the year and warned inflation could remain above its target range well into 2027.

Canstar modelling indicates that a borrower who took out a $600,000, 30-year mortgage when Labor came to power in May 2022 would originally have faced monthly repayments of $2,399.

After the latest rate rise takes effect, that repayment is expected to climb to $4,056 — an increase of $1,657 a month, or $19,884 annually.

For a $600,000 mortgage, an increase in the interest rate from 2.5 per cent to 6.74 per cent adds $2,120 a month, or $25,440 a year, in interest alone. The comparison assumes the loan balance remains unchanged and does not include principal repayments.

MacSween said voters would notice the contrast between the Prime Minister’s overseas engagements and the economic pressures facing many Australians. She compared the situation with the infamous moment when former prime minister Scott Morrison said he did not “hold a hose” while facing criticism for being on holiday during the 2019 Black Summer bushfires.

“We know Albanese is an expert at schmoozing and presenting himself as a great mate and bloke when he is backslapping and prancing on the world stage,” she said.

“But in reality, this is his ‘I don’t hold a hose’ moment.”

She argued that photographs of the Prime Minister attending high-profile events with members of the Royal Family reinforced the impression that he was disconnected from the economic hardship facing ordinary households.

“Sitting at the cricket with the little missus and holidaying in the Caribbean to chum it up with the royals may be a buzz for them, but it looks like an insult to battling Australians who will not be able to afford a holiday for years,” she said.

MacSween also suggested Albanese could be trying to distance himself politically from the government’s economic difficulties, as Treasurer Jim Chalmers comes under increasing pressure over inflation, interest rates and the cost of living.

“Albanese is driven by optics and public relations spin,” she said.

“He would be well aware of how bad this trip looks back home, but he is prepared to brazen it out.”

“One option is to let Chalmers wear the heat while he is overseas and then eventually make him the fall guy for the economic mess Australians are facing.”

The comments came after the Reserve Bank issued a bleak assessment of the economy, despite signs that growth is slowing.

“The economy is slowing, housing prices have fallen significantly and the unemployment rate has risen,” the central bank said after Tuesday’s decision.

The RBA also warned that inflation was likely to remain elevated for longer than previously anticipated.

“Inflation is now forecast to remain elevated through much of 2027 and is not expected to reach the top of the 2 to 3 per cent target range until late 2027,” the board said.

The pressure is already being reflected in the jobs market, with Australia’s unemployment rate rising to 4.7 per cent — its highest level in five years.

MacSween said the political risk for Albanese was that voters could increasingly link him to the worsening cost-of-living crisis, regardless of where responsibility lies within the government.

“He would like to survive for another term and I suspect his ego will not allow him to think otherwise,” she said.

“But Australians are hurting and they are paying a lot more attention to what their leaders are doing while they struggle to pay their mortgages.”

The Caribbean visit marks the beginning of a series of international trips Albanese is due to undertake over the next six weeks.

After leaving the Caribbean, he is scheduled to travel to Turkey for the UN climate conference, followed by the East Asia Summit and Australia-ASEAN Summit in the Philippines.

He will then visit China for the APEC Leaders’ Summit and talks with President Xi Jinping, before concluding the tour at the G20 Summit in the United States in December.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has told confidants he does not intend to retire, despite Republicans’ looming loss of the Senate majority needed to swiftly confirm judicial nominees.

With Republicans currently in control, Donald Trump could have had an opportunity to nominate as many as two additional justices, potentially replacing the court’s oldest conservative members, Alito, 76, and Clarence Thomas, 78.

That prospect will change in January, when Democrats assume the Senate majority and regain the ability to block a Supreme Court nominee through a filibuster.

Alito has told people close to him that he will remain on the bench rather than retire in time for Republicans to push through a Trump-backed successor, The New York Times reported.

According to two sources cited by the newspaper, Alito—who has sided with Trump in 89 percent of cases, based on SCOTUSblog data—made clear that he planned to stay after it became apparent Democrats would take control.

Trump had suggested several weeks earlier that Alito was considering retirement, in what appeared to be an unusual public attempt to influence the justice’s future on the court.

His post on Truth Social was brief, but came after months of speculation over whether Alito might leave the bench.

“A great man!!! President DJT,” Trump wrote Friday morning, while sharing a report headlined, “Justice Alito confirms he is considering retirement.”

Alito, who was nominated by former President George W. Bush, said in a rare CBS News interview last month that he had considered retiring this year and expected to revisit the question in 2027.

“It’s something that I think that somebody at my age has to think about every term,” Alito said.

“But I thought that I could still make a valuable contribution, which is why I became a justice and a judge in the first place,” he added.

Trump has repeatedly praised Alito on social media as one of the “Greatest of All Time,” even as he has used the same platforms to criticize the three justices he appointed to the Supreme Court only a few years ago.

The president has attacked Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett after they ruled against him in major cases during his second term. Those decisions included challenges to his use of an emergency-powers law to impose sweeping global tariffs and to his executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship.

Trump has also been open about wanting the chance to appoint a fourth justice if a vacancy emerges.

In a Fox News interview earlier this year, he said he was “prepared” to nominate as many as three justices if vacancies arose.

“It’d be nice to say, now I have somebody for 40 years,” Trump told then-Fox News host Maria Bartiromo in an April interview.

Trump said his administration was prepared to fill up to three seats, suggesting that potential nominees were already undergoing vetting.

Even so, Trump has consistently paired his comments with praise for Alito and Justice Thomas, another conservative member of the court appointed by George W. Bush. Thomas has also faced occasional retirement speculation, although far less than Alito.

During his first term, Trump moved rapidly to secure confirmation of his Supreme Court nominees.

He nominated Amy Coney Barrett and won her confirmation within 30 days of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, just one week before Trump lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden.

Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation took slightly more than two months. Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination, which was overshadowed by controversy and allegations of misconduct, was approved in just under three months.

Trump has since criticized all three of his appointees for ruling against him in major second-term cases, including disputes over his use of emergency powers to impose global tariffs and his attempt to end birthright citizenship by executive order.

He has made no secret of his desire to appoint a fourth justice if the opportunity presents itself.

However, as The Times noted, even an Alito retirement would not have guaranteed Trump another successful Supreme Court nomination.

With Republicans holding a 53-47 Senate majority, the administration would have needed to satisfy moderates such as lame-duck senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, as well as fellow outgoing Republicans John Cornyn, Bill Cassidy and Thom Tillis, all of whom have clashed with Trump in recent months.

Trump now faces the prospect of negotiating with a Senate in which he would need at least six Democratic votes to preserve his administration’s generational influence over the Supreme Court.
