GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Granville Crockett Batey Jr., 43, was arrested early Tuesday on a hit-and-run charge, marking his second arrest on similar allegations in less than three weeks.
The incident began around 5:42 p.m. Sept. 14, when a 911 caller reported seeing a white Mazda being driven erratically near Butler Plaza. According to the caller, the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a median. As the witness followed the Mazda, the caller reported that it rear-ended another vehicle at the intersection of Clark Butler Boulevard and Southwest 33rd Place, then left the scene. The Mazda later reportedly ran off the road, entered a ditch and damaged a Florida Department of Transportation fence.
A second witness told officers the Mazda struck the victim’s vehicle while it was stopped at a traffic light. The Mazda then turned onto Southwest 33rd Place and entered the Walmart parking lot, where the witness lost sight of it. She said the driver waved toward the victim’s vehicle before leaving.
Another witness said the white Mazda hit the vehicle from behind, backed away and fled. That witness reported seeing the Mazda travel over a sidewalk and median before continuing along the roadway. She followed the vehicle for a time but eventually lost track of it.
A passenger in the struck vehicle said she and the driver felt the impact from the rear before the other vehicle drove away. The passenger said she was not injured in the collision.
The driver told police she had seen the Mazda traveling the wrong way on two occasions before the crash. She said her vehicle was stopped at a light when it was hit. Although she reported experiencing pain afterward, she chose to drive herself to an emergency room. An officer estimated the damage to her vehicle at roughly $3,500.
When officers arrived, they reportedly found Batey inside the Mazda, which had become stuck in a ditch. Police said that after being told to exit the vehicle, Batey put it in Drive and attempted to leave. The wheels spun in the ditch, but officers said he continued trying to drive the vehicle free.
Officers also reported seeing Batey actively inhaling from an aerosol can, later identified as Spray-X Electronics Duster.

After receiving his Miranda warning, Batey reportedly told officers he had “bumped into” another vehicle and tried to pull around it. He said he did not see the other vehicle after passing it and estimated he had been traveling about 5 mph. Batey also claimed the other vehicle struck him. He told officers he had “passed out” at some point during the incident and said his tires began spinning after he lost consciousness. Asked about the aerosol can, he said it was intended for cleaning and denied inhaling or ingesting its contents.
Batey was taken to an emergency room for evaluation before being booked into jail. He reportedly agreed to provide a blood sample at the hospital, and the sample was submitted to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for testing.
Batey has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage, leaving the scene of a crash involving injury, driving under the influence with damage to a person or property, resisting an officer without violence, and inhaling a controlled substance. He has six felony convictions (one violent) and 22 misdemeanor convictions (four violent), along with three DUI arrests and a previous conviction for leaving the scene of a crash with property damage in 2000. He is on pre-trial release following an August 26 arrest for leaving the scene of a crash that disabled the other vehicle; he was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with evidence on that date.
Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $135,000 on the new charges and ordered him to wear a transdermal alcohol monitor.

Death in Paradise star Shaquille Ali-Yebuah has revealed he was told his cousin had allegedly been killed by police just moments before undergoing emergency surgery that ultimately saved his life.
The 31-year-old actor, who portrays Officer Sebastien Rose in the BBC comedy crime drama, was taken to a Los Angeles hospital with what was thought to be a chest infection. Doctors later diagnosed him with a collapsed lung, leading to three operations in the space of a month.
In an Instagram post shared on September 11, Shaquille described the devastating sequence of events during what he called a “wild month.”
He wrote: “Right before they wheeled me into surgery, I got news my cousin got killed by police back home in Jamaica. (sic)”
“Imagine trying to process a death while somebody’s asking you to sign papers in case YOU don’t wake up.
“I wake up from surgery, body cut up full of tubes, grateful I made it – just to hear my other lil cousin got locked up.

‘Doctors done surgery, fixed it, said I couldn’t leave LA until I got the all clear to fly, I recovered for 2 weeks thinking I’d be back to shooting soon – only for the x-rays to show on my follow up appt that my lung collapsed again!
‘Spontaneous pneumothorax back to back. It was almost like life was forcing me to be still. (sic).’
After thanking the medical team for looking after him, Shaquille continued: ‘Three surgeries in 4 weeks… hated needles, now I’m getting injected two times a day for blood, a fear became a daily routine. (sic).’

Shaquille admitted he had been pushing himself physically just before seeking medical attention.
The Save Me cast member said: ‘This was an hour before I went for my initial hospital check up as I kept getting shortness of breath, I just hit the push up record for the day at Venice Beach, oblivious I was walking around with one lung for 5 days, thought the pain was just a chest infection.
‘Everyday pain. (sic).’
Shaquille mentioned that he had met a doctor in Los Angeles who was a fan of Death in Paradise.
He wrote: ‘The Main Doctor at the first hospital and overseer of my first surgery turned out to be a huge fan of DIP, what’s the odds.
‘We give thanks man, we don’t dwell, it’s all a part of the journey. (sic)’
Shaquille said he felt surrounded by reminders of death as he recovered.
He penned: ‘Every day bad news that hospital TV kept showing celebrities, faces I grew up seeing, transition.
‘Death felt way too present while I was lying there fighting to breathe, alone with my thoughts. (sic)’
Shaquille concluded: ‘The thing is, you can’t prevent a spontaneous pneumothorax, so to have it back to back maybe God made me be still because I spent my whole life moving – chasing the next dream, the next flight, the next version of me.
‘I was worried about the scenes I was missing… then life gave me a role where the only thing that mattered was making it to the next scene.’
‘They say you only live once, but I don’t agree. You only DIE once, you LIVE every day, make it count. (sic).’
BBC Question Time Regular Bonnie Greer Dies After Short Illness
British-American writer, playwright and cultural commentator Bonnie Greer has died aged 77 following a short illness, her husband David Hutchins has confirmed. In a statement shared with her devoted online following, Hutchins said he was announcing the news with “profound sadness”, paying tribute to Greer’s far-reaching influence on Britain’s cultural and public life. He described her as “an acclaimed playwright, author, critic, cultural and political commentator whose intelligence, courage and distinctive voice made an enduring contribution to British cultural and public life.”
Hutchins added: “To me, she was my partner, confidante and inspiration, and I feel profoundly privileged to have shared my life with her. Those closest to Bonnie will remember her warmth, humour, generosity and extraordinary ability to bring people together.”
Named by the Observer among the UK’s foremost public intellectuals, Greer built a career defined by incisive work on race, culture and public life, spanning theatre, literature, criticism and broadcasting. Reflecting on the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement in a 2016 interview with the Guardian, she said: “When I wake up in the morning, I’m just myself.
“It’s only when I leave the door that I become a black woman to the world. I tell black women all the time, ‘Don’t apologise for yourself and keep your hair nappy. Make sure you are heard’.” Born in Chicago in 1948, Greer discovered an early passion for storytelling and began writing plays as a child.
She later studied theatre in her native Chicago before training at New York’s renowned Actors Studio under director Elia Kazan. Greer relocated to Britain in 1986 and went on to hold board positions at major arts organisations, including the British Museum, the Royal Opera House and the London Film School.
As her public profile grew, Greer became a recognisable and respected presence on British television, appearing on programmes including Newsnight Review and Question Time. She also served as chancellor of Kingston University in London. Her books included the memoir A Parallel Life and a critical biography of acclaimed American poet and playwright Langston Hughes.
Her theatre work earned her the Verity Bargate Award for best play for Munda Negra. Greer also wrote the novels Hanging by Her Teeth, published in 1994, and Entropy, released in 2009. That same year saw the publication of Obama Music, her blend of memoir and music history, and she was appointed an OBE in 2010 for her services to the arts.
In 2022, Bonnie Greer was made a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She is survived by her husband David and her six siblings.
Mbappé and Vinícius Refuse to Wear Ceuta Solidarity Shirts
Tensions are mounting in Madrid after Real Madrid’s two biggest stars, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, covered up the club’s message of solidarity with Ceuta on their pre-match T-shirts.
Rather than presenting a united stance, the pair were joined by Ibrahima Konate in rolling up their shirts, concealing the message in what was seen as opposition to the position taken by the club and the league.
The shirts carried the slogan, ‘We are all Caballas’, in support of Ceuta’s community following the migration crisis in the Spanish enclave on the North African coast.
Spain declared a state of emergency earlier this summer amid a major border crisis, after 80,000 migrants — mainly young Moroccan men — arrived on July 30 and 31. At least 57 people died attempting the crossing, while Morocco has challenged Spanish sovereignty over the territory since its independence in 1956.
Ceuta’s president has said that 13,000 of those migrants remain in the enclave, ensuring the issue remains politically charged as Real Madrid and other clubs lend their voices to the situation.
Before Tuesday night’s 3-2 victory over Elche, Real’s entire squad received the shirts as part of an initiative intended to demonstrate support for Ceuta’s residents.

However, the gesture quickly became an awkward moment for Real as Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Konate concealed the slogan in full view of the global audience.
By deliberately hiding the wording, the three players appeared to signal that they did not share the sentiment behind the club’s show of solidarity.
None of the players have come out publicly to explain their view on Ceuta but the pictures and footage from Tuesday evening speak volumes.
The rest of Jose Mourinho’s squad posed for customary photos and lined up as usual ahead of the LaLiga clash kitted out in their specially designed green and white t-shirts.
Footage showed Vinicius Jr with his shirt rolled up to cover the message, before Mbappe grimaced when putting his on.
He then saw what Vinicius Jr had done and repeated the move.
The initiative for clubs to promote a message of Ceuta solidarity was put forward by league organisers for this round of fixtures.
No other players in the nine other fixtures over the weekend chose to demonstrate their protest to the Ceuta solidarity message.

The three Real stars who opted to defy the club have angered plenty of supporters.
One wrote: ‘I hope they boo them until the day they leave Real Madrid, utter disgust.’
Another posted: ‘I hope Florentino fines them with 3 months’ suspension without a job or pay. That way, the nonsense would end quickly. They’re way too full of themselves.’
While a third gave his damning verdict: ‘Shame that @realmadrid allows this contempt toward our compatriots from Ceuta by these millionaires who live in luxurious gated communities with private security.’
A Moroccan player for Real Betis in Seville, Ez Abde, also wore the t-shirt before his side’s game against Villarreal and received a barrage of abuse online from his countrymen.
The issue is a hugely sensitive one and Ceuta’s crisis has been front and centre of the political agenda in Spain since July.
Mbappe has not publicly spoken about his views on the migrant crisis in Ceuta
Spain is preparing accommodation for up to 10,000 migrants in Ceuta and the Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, has insisted the situation was not mishandled. ‘What happened is that we couldn’t cope with the influx,’ he said this week.
He added that authorities had taken in the migrants before returning the majority to Morocco, adding that nine in ten had gone back.
Sánchez said accommodation for 6,000 people would be available by the end of the week, with capacity eventually rising to 10,000.
He said the government hoped to have the situation under control by the end of the year and appealed for patience from residents of Ceuta, which has a population of around 84,000.

McAfee said Swift, 36, was completely invested as she watched her husband Travis Kelce’s Chiefs defeat the Denver Broncos, following “every snap” of the action.
“That was the most ‘into it’ suite we’ve ever been in,” McAfee recalled.
Swift’s mother, Andrea Swift, was also in attendance and brought candied bacon for everyone in the suite to enjoy.
The former NFL player also praised the Grammy-winning singer for taking a selfie with him, describing Swift as “kind” and “hospitable.”
After McAfee greeted Travis’ mother, Donna Kelce, Swift gave him a hug. He later joked that he regretted “sweat[ing] all over” the pop star amid the sweltering Missouri heat.
Meanwhile, McAfee was amazed that Cruise, 64, appeared unaffected by the heat despite wearing a leather jacket.
“He … didn’t have a single drop or bead of sweat anywhere,” the retired athlete told listeners. “He’s the movie star. He doesn’t sweat.”
This weekend’s matchup marked Swift’s first appearance at a game since marrying Kelce, 36, in New York City in July.

Mark Zuckerberg Distances Meta From Calls for Coordinated AI Slowdown
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said individual AI companies, rather than the industry as a whole, are responsible for ensuring their technology is developed safely, pushing back against calls from rivals for a coordinated slowdown in advanced artificial intelligence research.
Zuckerberg’s social media comments came after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed a plan that rapidly drew backing from prominent technology leaders, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Elon Musk at SpaceXAI.
Researchers’ warnings that AI could pose risks to humanity have intensified a broader debate over how the industry should control the technology before it potentially moves beyond human oversight.
AI developers already have strong reasons to build models responsibly and face “significant liability” if their systems cause harm, Zuckerberg said.
“Every lab has the responsibility and incentive to move at the pace required to train its models safely, and the ability to take its own actions to ensure that happens,” he wrote on X.
Though he did not mention Anthropic or any other company by name, Zuckerberg’s post arrived days after Amodei laid out a three-part AI safety plan. That proposal included having companies and governments work together to slow the pace of AI development.
Zuckerberg said Meta postponed the release of its Muse AI agent by several months while it addressed safety and security concerns.
“We didn’t call for everyone else to do this before we would,” he said.
Instead of pursuing systems capable of automatically enhancing themselves, known as recursive self-improvement, companies should focus on developing safe AI models, Zuckerberg wrote.
“Committing the significant majority of compute towards serving people rather than racing towards recursive self-improvement is one of the best ways to ensure we develop this technology safely.”

Mother Says 7-Month-Old Was Intubated With Skull Fracture Hours After FaceTime With Babysitter, Police Say

A Charlotte mother says she video-called her 7-month-old son while he was with a babysitter and saw no obvious signs that anything was wrong. Hours later, police say, she was told to get to the hospital, where the infant had been intubated after suffering a skull fracture and a severe brain injury.
The babysitter, 28-year-old Shidae Brown of Charlotte, has been charged with intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. Authorities allege Brown was responsible for the injuries, rejecting her account that the child was hurt after falling from a couch.
“The victim’s injuries (skull fractures, axonal shearing) are severe and have resulted in the victim being intubated,” an arrest affidavit says. “These injuries are also consistent with nonaccidental trauma.”
According to police, the boy’s mother left him in Brown’s care on the evening of Sept. 7. The next day, the mother said she FaceTimed with Brown and her son, who appeared to be fine during the call.
Later that evening, Brown called the mother and told her to meet them at the hospital, the affidavit states. Brown allegedly said the baby “was not well” and had fallen from a couch earlier that day.
When the mother arrived at the hospital, her son had already been intubated.
Brown told investigators she was alone with the infant when he was hurt and maintained that the couch fall caused his injuries, according to the affidavit. “She denied any other accident occurring to the victim,” the document states.
Investigators said the seriousness of the baby’s injuries, along with Brown’s admission that she was the sole caregiver at the time, prompted them to pursue criminal charges. Brown was arrested two days later.
The infant’s condition was not known as of Tuesday.
Brown was ordered to be held at the Mecklenburg County Jail on a $2 million bond.
