Tom Pelphrey delivered one of the most heartfelt moments of Monday night’s Emmy Awards, thanking God and paying tribute to his growing family during an emotional acceptance speech.

Pelphrey won outstanding supporting actor in a drama series for portraying Robbie Prendergrast in Season 1 of Task. He began his remarks by expressing gratitude to God.

“I thank God for my life and my sobriety. I thank my family and my friends for all your love and support all these years, from Emmys to black box theaters and everything in between,” he said.

After recognizing his Task co-stars, Pelphrey turned to his fiancée, former The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco, with an especially moving tribute.

“And to my favorite actor in this room, my love, my best friend, my partner, the very pregnant Kaley — I love you more than anything, and our family is the crown jewel of my life,” he said.

He ended by sharing a message for the couple’s daughter, Matilda, as well as their unborn daughter.

“Matilda, daddy loves you. Baby girl, daddy loves you. Thank you. God bless,” he concluded.

As Variety noted, Pelphrey was nominated alongside his Task co-star Mark Ruffalo, who was up for lead actor in a drama series. The series also earned four additional nominations, including recognition for drama-series writing and directing. Pelphrey previously received an Emmy nomination in 2022 for his guest role as Ben Davis in Ozark.

Two experts who left Lucy Letby’s defence team over concerns about its “scientific credibility” have claimed that her barrister is harming her prospects of securing freedom.

Helen Shannon, a British chemical engineering specialist, and Professor Geoff Chase, a New Zealand-based bioengineering academic, were among an international group of doctors and scientists who last year supported claims that Letby may have suffered a miscarriage of justice.

The group compiled a 100-page report questioning Letby’s convictions for the attempted murder of two babies who were poisoned with insulin.

However, the pair said on Monday that they had withdrawn their support for Letby’s defence team, citing concerns over the “scientific credibility” of parts of its evidence and what they described as “unresolvable problems”.

They also accused Mark McDonald, the barrister leading Letby’s campaign to overturn her convictions, of “placing the long-term interests of Ms Letby at serious, unnecessary and unacceptable risk”.

Their intervention comes as the public inquiry into the murders is due to publish its findings today.

The inquiry, chaired by Lady Justice Thirlwall, is expected to identify several missed chances for hospital leaders to act after doctors warned of a sharp rise in deaths on the neonatal unit during 2015 and 2016.

Letby, 36, has consistently maintained her innocence. She is challenging convictions for murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016, offences for which she is serving 15 whole-life sentences.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission, the body responsible for investigating possible miscarriages of justice, is examining a dossier submitted on her behalf last year by the expert panel led by Canadian neonatologist Dr Shoo Lee.

At a press conference in February 2025, Dr Lee said that no murders had taken place, claiming instead that the babies died either from natural causes or as a result of poor care.

Ms Shannon and Professor Chase told The Guardian, although they stood by their assessment that it was ‘very unlikely’ the babies, known as Babies F and L in the trial, were poisoned, they could not support other evidence being used by Letby’s defence team relating to the insulin cases.

Other arguments being put forward were ‘inconsistent with the available evidence, science and established physiology’, they said.

In a letter to the CCRC, the experts said: ‘Whilst it is entirely legitimate for the defence to advance multiple arguments, some of the other arguments now being put forward we cannot support as scientifically credible and which have, in our view, fundamental unresolvable problems.’

Ms Shannon and Professor Chase said the strategy of Mr McDonald was ‘placing the long-term interests of Ms Letby at serious, unnecessary and unacceptable risk’ and that those ‘consequences also extend to the families’ of the babies who died and were injured.

‘We cannot, with integrity, support arguments which are inconsistent with the available evidence, science and established physiology,’ they added.

‘After disclosing these concerns, continued association with arguments we believe are demonstrably inaccurate creates a serious ethical issue under the professional engineering codes governing us in New Zealand and the UK, and exposes us to professional sanction.’

Dr Lee claimed his experts had been assembled without bias to carry out an ‘objective review’ of the medical notes of the 17 babies that Letby was initially accused of murdering or trying to kill at her trial.

But in September their independence was called into question after it emerged he had written to the medics, saying: ‘We might be her (Letby’s) last hope.’

One senior neonatologist told the Mail he declined to take part in the panel for several reasons, including because of the leading nature of the language in Dr Lee’s email.

Then, in April, it emerged Mr McDonald had been reported to the Bar Standards Board for alleged professional misconduct.

Families of the killer nurse’s victims are understood to have made a formal complaint about him to the legal regulator.

The complaint is believed to centre on a letter written by Mr McDonald’s then-instructing solicitors that was leaked to the Sunday Times. 

The correspondence, addressed to Cheshire coroner Jacqueline Devonish, requested that Letby be afforded ‘interested party’ status in upcoming inquests into the deaths of her victims.

But Richard Baker KC, representing the families, said his clients had been ‘extremely distressed’ to learn their babies’ names – which are protected by strict anonymity orders – had been in the letter and ‘recklessly disclosed to a third party’.

In response to the withdrawal of Ms Shannon and Professor Chase, Mr McDonald said the case for Letby’s innocence did not ‘stand or fall on any one expert’.

‘We now have evidence from a number of leading international experts in insulin, endocrinology and laboratory medicine which fundamentally undermines the scientific evidence relied upon at trial,’ he said.

‘The strength of the new evidence lies in its breadth and convergence, with independent experts from different disciplines and jurisdictions identifying fundamental problems with the scientific basis upon which the jury were invited to conclude that babies [F] and [L] had been deliberately poisoned.’

The CCRC, which has been reviewing Letby’s convictions for 18 months, declined to comment.

A police investigation into potential corporate manslaughter and gross negligence manslaughter at the hospital remains ongoing.

Once the trophies had been handed out and the red carpet had wrapped, Hollywood’s biggest names headed into the night for a string of celebratory parties following Monday’s 2026 Emmy Awards.

At the 2026 Emmy Awards, Widow’s Bay emerged as the night’s dominant winner. Its leading man, Matthew Rhys, also made Emmy history by becoming the first performer to claim two lead acting awards across separate categories in a single night.

Meanwhile, HBO Max’s The Pitt repeated its previous Emmy success on the drama front, winning Outstanding Drama Series once more, while Noah Wyle again secured Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama. The series took home the same two major awards at last year’s ceremony.

However, it was Widow’s Bay that made the massive first impression on television’s biggest night as it won in all six categories it was nominated in including the top honour Outstanding Comedy Series.

The comedy horror series beat out: Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, and Shrinking.

Widow’s Bay is set in the fictional New England island town of Widow’s Bay, which happens to be afflicted with a centuries-old curse that brings various supernatural evils upon the island

In addition to Rhys, top acting honours were earned by Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root in the Outstanding Supporting Actress and Actor in a Comedy Series categories, respectively.

However, their co-star Rhys was perhaps the biggest winner of the night as he made history by becoming the first actor to earn two leading acting honours in the same night.

He not only earned Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy series for the Apple TV series, but also took home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me earlier in the evening. 

On the Apple TV series, the talented actor portrays Tom Loftis, mayor of Widow’s Bay, as he is originally from the mainland and is initially skeptical of the local residents’ superstitions about the island’s supposed curse. He is a widower, and father to a son, Evan, from his marriage to his deceased wife, Lauren. 

In the psychological thriller mini series, Rhys portrays Nile Jarvis who is the son of a real estate magnate who moves next door to the home of Aggie Wiggs [Claire Danes] in Oyster Bay, New York on Long Island to live in a more secluded manner with his second wife as he allegedly killed his first wife.  

The Pitt earned the top award of the night Outstanding Drama Series on a night where it earned 25 nominations which was the most from any single series.

It faced stiff competition including: The Diplomat, The Gilded Age, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Paradise, Pluribus, Slow Horses, and Your Friends and Neighbors. 

The Pitt is centered around the daily lives of healthcare professionals in a Pittsburgh hospital as they juggle personal crises, workplace politics, and the emotional toll of treating critically ill patients, revealing the resilience required in their noble calling. 

Noah Wyle was the first to be awarded for the highly-popular HBO Max series.

The 55-year-old actor earned the win in the coveted Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category as he beat out: Sterling K. Brown for Paradise, Gary Oldman for Slow Horses, Mark Ruffalo for Task, and Rufus Sewell for The Diplomat.

On the series he portrays Dr. Michael ‘Robby’ Robinavitch who is the main protagonist of the show as he deals with trauma and PTSD alongside unresolved post-COVID stress.

Meanwhile, Rhea Seehorn earned one of the biggest wins of television’s biggest night and beat one of the biggest stars in Zendaya to earn the honour. 

The 54-year-old actress triumphed in the Lead Actress in a Drama category at the Emmy Awards 2026 as she was recognized for her work in Pluribus.

Jean Smart earned her fifth Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy win in a row at the Emmy Awards 2026 on a night that featured a star-studded red carpet.

 The 75-year-old talented actress was recognized for her work on Hacks which just had its fifth and final season. 

Smart – who earned her eighth total Emmy in her 15th total nomination – was obviously emotional as her name was called and she was presented the honoUr by Zendaya.

Sally Field earned Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her work in Remarkably Bright Creatures. 

The 78th annual Primetime Emmy Awards took place at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles on Monday night. 

Law & Order: SVU executive producer/star Mariska Hargitay served as host of the gala event which marks the first time a woman has hosted the show in 15 years.

Britain’s jobs market is showing further signs of strain, adding to concerns over a potential winter of discontent as Andy Burnham prepares for mounting economic pressure.

Official data showed the number of people on company payrolls fell by 26,000 last month, leaving the total 145,000 lower than it was a year ago.

Vacancies also dropped to a new five-year low in the three months to August, with roughly 8,000 fewer jobs being advertised than during the same period in 2025.

Regular pay growth in the private sector stood at 2.9 per cent, only marginally outpacing inflation.

The public sector told a different story, with annual wage growth accelerating to 6.6 per cent. Public-sector employment rose by another 11,000 in the three months to June, taking the state payroll to 6.21million people.

Liz McKeown, the ONS director of economic statistics, highlighted the impact of Labour’s increases to employer national insurance contributions and the minimum wage.

She said: ‘Smaller businesses are continuing to report that increased labour costs are affecting hiring decisions.’

The downbeat figures come as the Middle East crisis appears to be worsening, raising fears that surging energy costs could trigger another inflationary wave. Markets are now pricing in as many as five Bank of England interest-rate rises before the end of the year.

Ministers are already facing a difficult task balancing the books ahead of next month’s Budget, while businesses warn that further tax rises could prove disastrous.

The rate of unemployment in the UK remained unchanged at 4.9 per cent in the same period, the ONS said.

August’s 26,000 recorded job losses were more than double the 10,000 forecast for the month by economists. It brought the total of those employed down to 30.2 million.

A further 19,000 people lost their jobs in July, adding to a total of 39,000 job losses over the last three months.

Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, Andrew Griffith MP said: ‘Under Labour, job vacancies are at their lowest level in a decade outside the pandemic, 101,000 payrolled jobs have been lost over the past year, and the claimant count is surging.

‘Labour is, and always has been, the party of unemployment.

‘Businesses are still absorbing the cost of Angela Rayner’s disastrous (Un)Employment Rights Act, and Labour’s refusal to rule out more tax rises is causing huge uncertainty for employers.

‘Only the Conservatives have a plan to get Britain working again. We’ll cut the red tape that makes it harder for employers to hire and deliver the lower, simpler taxes our country needs.’

The UK’s labour market has been shrinking for the past two years, recording rising unemployment while fewer employers are hiring, as 16,000 fewer job vacancies were advertised since the start of the year.

The Bank of England is expected to keep borrowing costs unchanged at 3.75 per cent on Thursday.

The decision will come after official inflation figures are released tomorrow. Economists expect inflation to have gone up from 2.9 per cent to 3.1 per cent, mainly due to rising oil and gas prices.

Thomas Pugh, chief economist at RSM UK, said that despite ongoing weakness, the statistics show signs of stabilisation in the jobs market, which may give the Bank room to increase rates to combat inflation in the coming months.

He said: ‘The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has so far relied on the weakness of the labour market as cover for keeping rates on hold, but that position looks increasingly difficult to hold if the labour market stabilises and inflation rises to around 4%.

‘We still expect the MPC to hold rates on Thursday, but a rate hike as early as November is now looking much more likely.’

Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said the ONS figures ‘show a labour market that remains resilient in the face of significant global economic pressures’.

‘But we know there is more work to do, particularly to ensure young people gain the skills, experience and confidence needed to succeed,’ he added.

Meghan Markle has shared nine new family photographs in tribute to Prince Harry as he celebrates his 42nd birthday today.

The Duchess of Sussex posted the collection of images featuring Harry, herself and their children on Instagram, writing: ‘He’s simply the best. Happy birthday, my love’, followed by a heart emoji.

The photographs capture Harry during a series of outdoor family adventures with Meghan, Prince Archie, seven, Princess Lilibet, five, and their labrador, Pula. In one picture, he kisses Lilibet, while another shows him carrying her bicycle.

In another shot, the duke drives a quad bike along a track with Archie and Lilibet riding in the back, seated on either side of a Marks & Spencer bag, as Pula runs behind them.

The montage is set to an excerpt from Noah Reid’s rendition of ‘Simply the Best’, his cover of the Tina Turner classic that featured in the television series Schitt’s Creek.

The birthday post comes after it emerged that the Sussexes had already transferred Archie and Lilibet to a new school following the family’s relocation from the US on August 26.

The children had only recently begun classes in England, but are now due to attend another school after the long journey was reportedly said to have created difficulties for the security team.

A spokesman for the Sussexes said: ‘The decision for the children to move school was taken following a discussion with the family’s security team about the practicalities of their current arrangements.

‘The parents remain extremely grateful to all the teachers and staff for the love, care and effort they have shown their family.

‘This decision should in no way be interpreted as a reflection on the school or the exceptional care the children have received there.’

Sources close to the couple said the decision was made due to the practicalities of getting the children there and back.

Hello! magazine quoted a friend of the couple saying: ‘It’s a real shame, because they absolutely adored the school, the kids and their parents. It was perfect for them in every way and the children really enjoyed their time there.

‘They really wanted to make it work, but they had to make a difficult decision based on the fact that the team couldn’t make the school run operationally secure.’

Archie and Lilibet will now join another school in the area after visiting for a taster session on Monday.

Harry was spotted settling Lilibet into reception and the couple have been added to the parents’ Whatsapp groups, it was said.

A source close to Harry and Meghan also told People that settling the children ‘has been, and remains, their focus. Everything else will fall into place when the time is right’.

They added: ‘There is a lot to do. They have just moved halfway across the world and it’s been really busy getting the kids settled. Their focus has been on that, and will remain on that, for the time being. They are happy to be back.’

The dramatic development came as it emerged that Harry’s demand for taxpayer-funded police protection is being ‘reviewed’ now he is back in Britain.

The duke and duchess are said to have been informed that ‘a decision’ was made at a meeting last week to examine the threat to both of them.

The prince has been at loggerheads with the Home Office for years over its decision to remove his automatic right to security. Harry has long argued that he was born a prince and needs police protection when in the UK.

But he lost a series of legal battles against the Home Office which deemed he had forfeited the right to be able to call at will on taxpayer-funded protection after he quit as a frontline royal in 2020 and moved to a new life in California.

Only last year, after yet another defeat at the Royal Courts of Justice – against his father His Majesty’s government – the prince declared in a petulant BBC interview that he could not imagine a time when he could safely bring his family to his country of birth.

But now that he has had a sudden change of heart, bringing Meghan and his children to live in the UK, his access to police protection is being reviewed, it was reported yesterday evening.

The decision is said to involve reviewing the risks to Prince Harry and also to his wife.

ITV News said the Home Office committee that decides on security provision for high-profile royals and politicians – known as Ravec – has written to Harry informing him a ‘full review’ will take place.

If true, then this decision defies complaints made by Team Sussex about the meeting held last week by Ravec, the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures.

Some in Harry’s camp had accused Buckingham Palace of trying to scupper the Ravec meeting with King Charles’s bombshell letter last week which made clear Buckingham Palace’s view that the Sussexes were ‘private citizens’ not working royals.

Harry and Meghan were taken by surprise by the letter – written by the Lord Chamberlain – and would prefer to be known as ‘public figures’, it was made clear by sources close to them.

They believed the timing of the letter may have been an attempt to influence the Ravec committee on whether to reinstate Harry’s taxpayer-funded security.

At the time, the Daily Mail reported that such claims were incorrect, and the letter was sent out by the palace to offer clarity ahead of a busy programme for the Sussexes, not to interfere with his battles with the Home Office committee.

In fact, those close to the King believed the move could make it easier for him to see his son privately.

Last night, Harry’s fears that the letter could have been designed to block his bid for security appeared unfounded with the news that Ravec is going to fully review his need for protection for him and his family.

ITV News’s royal correspondent Chris Ship said: ‘It was decided that Harry should get a full review of his security now that he is resident in his home country and his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, have started classes at a British school.’

It was said the official review carried out by Ravec, called a Risk Management Board (RMB), would be conducted for both Harry and Meghan. It would be the first review of the potential risks and threats facing Meghan since the couple left the Monarchy in 2020.

In fact, Harry had a new ‘RMB’ completed in July, eight weeks ago, but this was conducted before those assessing his case knew about his plans to relocate his family to the UK.

Currently, said ITV News, the only protection the Sussexes have been given by British police is the phone number of a police liaison officer.

The duke has been told to call the phone number should he need police help, but he believes this is essentially zero protection as it would take officers a long time to reach him, were he or his family to be in distress or under attack.

Harry argues he is the son of the British monarch, the fifth in line to the throne and a veteran of the British Army who completed two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

He was criticised by some British officers for his decision to boast in his 2023 memoir Spare about how many people he had killed during his battles against the Taliban.

Some suggested this had massively increased his need for protection against those who might seek revenge.

Scotland Yard does not discuss the security arrangements of royals but it is understood that protection is arranged on a case-by-case basis and is constantly under review.

During some recent UK events attended by Harry, such as charity evenings, he has clearly been afforded police security.

Harry and Meghan also pay millions for private security. But in America, their bodyguards may be able to shoot people deemed a threat.

In Britain, their close protection agents are not allowed to carry guns, explaining why the duke is desperate to reinstate his automatic police protection.

The Home Office said: ‘The UK Government’s protective security system is rigorous and proportionate.

‘It is our long-standing policy not to provide detailed information on those arrangements, as doing so could compromise their integrity and affect individuals’ security.’

Last week, a source close to the Sussexes blamed the Lord Chamberlain’s letter for Uganda’s decision to pull out of the duke’s 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.

Uganda’s military chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba said the country had withdrawn from the competition because of ‘that Harry-Meghan nonsense’, and that it would ‘not participate in anything’ that does not have the King’s ‘approval’.

But the King’s private secretary Sir Clive Alderton then phoned General Kainerugaba to smooth over relations – and it was later revealed they would participate after all.

Charles was said to have been ‘moved’ by the military leader’s ‘sensitive consideration’ of what His Majesty’s opinion might be on the event.

In January 2020, Harry and Meghan had announced they intended to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family, become financially independent, still support Queen Elizabeth II, but split their time between the UK and North America.

But the late Queen ruled at the Sandringham Summit, which was convened to resolve the Megxit crisis, that the couple could not be half in and half out.
