Florida Woman Set on Fire at Gas Station After Refusing Stranger’s Money Request, Police Say

A Florida woman was set on fire in a shocking attack at a St. Petersburg gas station after a stranger allegedly ignited the fuel nozzle while she was pumping gas into her SUV, police said.

The 41-year-old victim was fueling her Volvo at a Mobil station on 40th Avenue North on Thursday night when Eleanor Crawford, 41, approached and asked to use her phone, according to police.

After the woman handed over the phone, Crawford allegedly asked her for money. When the victim declined, police said Crawford took out a lighter and ignited the gas nozzle. Flames quickly erupted around the victim and her vehicle.

Witness Scotty Gamling saw the attack unfold and rushed to help, getting the burning woman into his truck before calling 911.

He described the scene as “a fireball.”

In a troubling twist, Gamling had called police about Crawford before the gas-station attack. He said he saw her involved in a disturbance across the street, where what appeared to be an altercation broke out. Officers were reportedly already responding when the attack at the pumps occurred, Fox13 Tampa Bay reported.

Police arrested Crawford nearby about 20 minutes later.

Investigators said the women were strangers with no known relationship before their encounter at the gas station.

According to police, Crawford has an extensive criminal history that includes drug- and alcohol-related charges.

“I don’t know if alcohol and drugs were involved, but indicative of her history, there might’ve been something that diminished capacity there,” Assistant Police Chief Mike Kovacsev said in a press statement. “Why would she even do something like this?”

The victim suffered second-degree burns on her arms and back and was rushed to Tampa General Hospital. She is expected to survive.

“It’s kind of a unique case because you don’t see anything like this, especially something that results in such horrific burns,” Kovacsev said. “Luckily they were able to get her stabilized, and she’s going to make it.”

Crawford now faces attempted felony murder and arson charges and the investigation continues.

NEW DELHI – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday during the BRICS summit in New Delhi, in a fresh attempt by the neighboring rivals to improve relations fractured by a fatal border confrontation six years ago.

Xi said Beijing views its relationship with New Delhi through a “strategic and long-term perspective,” urging the two countries to complement one another’s strengths, offer mutual support and work toward shared growth.

The Chinese leader also called for “high-quality cooperation,” arguing that China and India have a responsibility as leading Global South nations to advance a more multipolar international order while helping safeguard global peace and stability.

Modi, meanwhile, thanked Xi for China’s support in organizing the BRICS gathering. Beijing is due to host next year’s summit.

Saturday’s discussions followed a meeting between the leaders in China last year, when Modi traveled there for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, the China-founded regional bloc focused on political, economic and security issues.

The BRICS summit also marks Xi’s first trip to India since 2019, highlighting the gradual and cautious diplomatic thaw between Asia’s two major powers after their relationship was severely damaged by the 2020 clash.

At least 20 Indian troops and four Chinese soldiers were killed in the 2020 confrontation along the remote Ladakh frontier, a harsh cold-desert region. The violence triggered a prolonged military standoff across the rugged Himalayan terrain, with both countries deploying tens of thousands of troops, supported by artillery, tanks and fighter aircraft.

Although India and China have moved to reduce tensions in the years since, significant distrust still shadows the relationship.

The nuclear-armed neighbors continue to contest sections of their shared border. Relations are also strained by India’s substantial trade deficit with China, New Delhi’s curbs on Chinese technology and investment, and their competing strategic ambitions across Asia. India has expanded military facilities along the disputed frontier, while China has strengthened its own side with roads and defensive installations.

Xi’s India visit is now seen as a key measure of whether the recent diplomatic warming can develop into a more durable stabilization of India-China relations.

Since their 1962 war, the economies of both countries have grown substantially, but China has far outpaced India and runs a large trade surplus with its neighbor. Their growing economic rivalry has added to longstanding territorial and strategic differences.

India has sought to capitalize on China’s rising labor costs and strained ties with the United States and Europe to position itself as an alternative base for foreign manufacturers. New Delhi has also viewed China’s multibillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative with concern and has strongly opposed it.

At the same time, India’s growing strategic partnership with the U.S. has raised concerns in Beijing, which views the relationship as part of efforts to counter China’s rise.

Brandi Glanville says she feels “embarrassed” by a GoFundMe campaign launched by her friend Gina Rodriguez as the former reality star continues seeking treatment for facial disfigurement.

The “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” alum grew emotional on Friday’s episode of her “Brandi Glanville Unfiltered” podcast as she opened up about how hard it has been to accept help from others.

“I’m embarrassed, honestly, because I don’t like to ask for help,” Glanville, 53, told co-host James Maas.

“I never thought I would do this,” she said, explaining that Rodriguez told her, “You have no choice.”

Glanville described the mounting financial pressure tied to her medical care, saying she is paying $7,000 a week in treatment costs despite having insurance.

According to Glanville, creditors contact her repeatedly throughout the day. She said that if she stops making payments, she could lose access to medication and see her treatment progress come to a halt, leaving her “spent in every way.”

The former model said she “[doesn’t] want anyone to see” the fundraising page, but acknowledged that she is unsure what other options remain.

Maas reassured Glanville that there was no shame in accepting support. “It’s not embarrassing. What’s embarrassing is the whole medical system … You need a GoFundMe,” he told her.

Glanville recently shared several diagnoses after years of unexplained facial health problems, including “highly resistant ESBL Klebsiella and Enterobacter with biofilm, Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever), Demodex dermatitis and mononucleosis.”

She also revealed that doctors found a fungal ball in her face, which she is preparing to have surgically removed.

The television personality recently shared footage of an ultrasound on Instagram, saying her doctor “saw something alive” and “moving” in her face during the examination.

“If I don’t find a doctor to cut this out of my face, I’m just going to do it myself,” she said in the video.

Glanville first addressed her facial disfigurement publicly in 2024, when she claimed Bravo was to blame for her appearance and said the condition had left her “miserable” and “depressed.”

“I’m not even going to share the picture of when it sinks in,” she said at the time. “Stress will kill you. How is your wealth? Take care of yourself, people. Thank you, Bravo. I couldn’t even work if I wanted to at this point.”

That same year, Glanville also shared that some medical professionals believed she had a parasite that was “jump[ing] around [her] face,” while others attributed the issue to “stress-induced edema.”

In February, she blamed her health issues on her 20-year-old ruptured breast implants, which she said had leaked silicone in her lymph nodes.

Glanville later learned that she had a benign facial tumor in one of the lymph nodes in her face.

Australian influencer and financial expert Victoria Devine has drawn criticism after a comment she made about her pregnancy experience prompted debate online.

Devine, a money columnist and podcast co-host, gave birth to her first child, Harvey, in March.

The new mother is widely known for offering finance and business advice through her She’s on the Money podcast. More recently, she spoke about her pregnancy with Harvey and the financial cost of having a baby.

During the May 22 episode of the podcast, Devine made a comment about taking prenatal vitamins before trying to conceive, saying they could help women have a ‘good quality baby’.

‘My doctor recommended that I started prenatals at least 12 months before trying [to conceive],’ she said.

‘If possible, because obviously then all the vitamins and minerals and stuff that are coming into your body can settle into your body and you can get your levels up. Because pregnancy does take a lot out of you.

‘But it’s things like iron and folate – folate’s really important for pregnant women. And it’s full of stuff that just makes sure that the baby you’re making is a really good quality baby.’

Although prenatal vitamins can be important for people trying to conceive, helping ensure the body receives nutrients needed to support a healthy pregnancy, Devine’s use of the phrase ‘good quality baby’ sparked discussion beneath a video that has since been deleted.

According to watchdog account @influencer.updates.au, one commenter said she had taken prenatal vitamins but her newborn was born with spina bifida.

Another user made the sarcastic comment saying ‘it’s a shame’ the vitamins don’t make her ‘a good quality mum’, while another stated ‘it’s not nice to see babies with genetic defects as not being “good quality babies”.’

Even if you have a varied diet, there are certain nutrients it is impossible to get in adequate quantities from food, which is where prenatal supplements are important.

Devine has since apologised for the comments, taking to her Instagram to write: ‘I wanted to share my deepest apologies for a post which was shared last week, I made a comment in jest without thinking about the ways in which it could be interpreted.

‘As someone who has struggled with pregnancy loss myself, I am all too aware of how precious life is, and how out of our control the experience of pregnancy can be.

The Bank of England spent more than £85,000 on research linked to its decision to remove Sir Winston Churchill and other prominent British figures from future banknotes, it has emerged.

Research commissioned by the Bank indicated that portraits of well-known Britons, including Churchill, Alan Turing and Jane Austen, should give way to wildlife-themed designs.

The findings warned that historical figures may be viewed as ‘elitist and divisive’, while a focus on the past could promote a ‘backward-looking vision of the UK’ and risk causing further division.

A Freedom of Information request found that the Bank spent £63,000 on reaching the decision and supporting its choice of nature as the replacement theme.

Market research consultancy Savanta received £49,000 to conduct focus groups on moving away from depictions of historical figures.

A further £22,500 was spent on public consultations exploring which animals should feature on the planned new banknote series.

The change would bring to an end a tradition that has placed leading Britons alongside the monarch on banknotes for more than half a century.

The proposal triggered a strong backlash. Critics branded it ‘bonkers’, while Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said the Bank was ‘erasing our history’ and called the move ‘a silly thing to do’.

Currently, Churchill is depicted on the £5 note, Jane Austen on the £10, J.M.W. Turner on the £20, and Alan Turing on the £50.    

In response to the FOI request, the Bank told The Telegraph: ‘Savanta was selected following a competitive evaluation process in which research companies that applied were assessed against a range of criteria, including value for money.’

It added that during the public consultation stage that ‘no external research or consultancy expenditure’ had been incurred, but it did not record the time staff spent on the project.

The Bank branded the move away from historical figures as a ‘positive evolution’, rather than ‘censorship’ or a ‘cancellation’ of history.  

More than 400,000 public votes were cast in a public consultation on a shortlist for the new nature-themed banknotes, which was divided into three categories by a panel of wildlife experts.

The first, mammals, included the bottlenose dolphin, brown hare, European hedgehog, grey seal, pine marten and red fox.

Six birds were also listed: the Atlantic puffin, barn owl, common kingfisher, Eurasian curlew, great spotted woodpecker, and white-tailed eagle.

The final category of amphibians, insects and fish consisted of the Atlantic salmon, basking shark, buff-tailed bumblebee, common frog, Emperor dragonfly and marsh fritillary butterfly.

The public consultation ended in July and Andrew Bailey, the Bank’s governor, is set to make the final decision on which animals will be used by the end of the year.

A spokesperson for the Bank of England previously said: ‘To select the theme for our next series of banknotes, the Bank canvassed a range of opinion through a public consultation last year.

‘This consultation received 44,000 responses and nature had the highest proportion of nominations and was the driver for our decision.

‘This theme also received additional positive feedback in Bank commissioned focus groups that took place once we had the results of the public consultation.’

Historical figures were first introduced on sterling notes more than half a century ago, when William Shakespeare appeared on the £20 note in 1970. 

The Bank has previously run into controversy over banknote designs after campaigners complained that too few women had featured in recent years, prior to Jane Austen appearing in 2017.

History has also proved uncomfortable due to links with slavery. In 2021 the Bank removed from display a series of paintings and busts of governors and directors who had connections to the slave trade in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Up to 50 relatives and friends, including Atack’s Rivals co-stars Alex Hassell, Bella McClean and Victoria Smurfit, will be handed parasols to shield themselves from the fierce Spanish sunshine.

The celebration will grow later in the day, when further guests join the newlyweds for a three-course meal in the courtyard. Dinner will be served beneath a sprawling, century-old Ficus Benjamina tree, decorated with strings of fairy lights beneath its umbrella-like canopy.

Atack, 36, legally married Garner, 40, at her local church in Bedfordshire three weeks ago, followed by a garden party at their home. The couple are step-cousins but are not biologically related.

This week, as many as 200 guests travelled to Mojacar, the whitewashed hilltop town in southern Spain, for a second celebration of the couple’s marriage.

A more intimate group is expected to witness the pair receive a blessing before the larger party arrives. Atack and Garner first met in 1994, when Garner’s father married Atack’s aunt.

Anthropic CEO Urges AI Leaders to Slow Development After Whistleblower Warning

The frantic global push to build more powerful artificial intelligence systems needs to slow down, Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei warned in an essay published on Saturday.

Amodei’s warning came after the viral resignation of whistleblower Jacob Coxon, who said AI poses an existential risk to humanity.

In his Saturday post, Amodei said AI industry leaders “must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models.”

“Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain,” Amodei wrote.

The Anthropic CEO, whose company created the Claude AI chatbot, said two developments had led him to reconsider the accelerating race to advance the technology.

“My first concern is that, since roughly this summer, AI has been advancing drastically faster, driven primarily by AI’s growing ability to build the next generation of AI,” he wrote.

He described the process as recursive self-improvement, saying it has begun emerging across the industry, including at Anthropic.

“Left unchecked, it could outrun our ability to understand and control these systems, and so must be pursued very carefully, if at all,” Amodei said.

Amodei said his second concern was the “OpenAI-Hugging Face Incident,” in which a “swarm of agents essentially acted as a fanatically devoted collective” and carried out cybersecurity attacks.

It comes after Coxon quit his job at the AI giant and issued a chilling warning over the rapid progress in the technology that he feared could end humanity as soon as 2030.

Coxon announced his departure in a social media post on Tuesday and warned that companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are not ‘acting responsibly’. 

‘I resigned from Anthropic today,’ he wrote on X. ‘I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. 

‘Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.’

Superintelligence is the point at which an artificial system becomes more powerful than any individual, company or even nation.

The former researcher of three years continued to plead with the public on X. ‘Do not underestimate the power of this technology,’ Coxon wrote.

He claimed that while executives and senior researchers ‘couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible,’ they are privately expressing similar concerns.

Coxon’s comments come shortly after Geoffrey Hinton, a Canadian researcher often referred to as the ‘Godfather of AI’ – warned that superintelligent systems could ‘lead to human extinction.’

‘We would be very foolish to develop superintelligence now, when there is no scientific consensus it can be developed safely and controllably,’ Dr Hinton said. 

‘Losing control over AI smarter than ourselves could be catastrophic and could even lead to human extinction.’

In February, Anthropic was accused of endangering national security after Amodei refused to back down over concerns the company’s products could be used in ways that would violate its safeguards.

The British comics anthology 2000 AD remains a glaring gap in my reading history, and one I ought to address. Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Garth Ennis, and many of the writers who later shaped Vertigo and the darker, adult-facing wing of American comics during the 1980s and 1990s first made their names in its pages. Judge Dredd is 2000 AD’s best-known creation, helped along by two radically different film adaptations. Now another of its characters, Rogue Trooper — created by Gerry Finley-Day and Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons — is making its feature-film debut under director Duncan Jones.

After seeing Rogue Trooper at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, it seems likely that the original comics influenced Jones’ debut feature, the cult sci-fi favorite Moon. Both films follow cloned or genetically engineered people created for hazardous missions in space, treated as expendable tools until they recognize their exploitation. With the help of comic mechanical companions, they turn against the institutions that built and abused them.

But where Moon is an intimate, more lyrical drama, Rogue Trooper aims for a far larger action spectacle, even as an independent production made outside the studio system. Jones’ answer to mounting a comic-book war epic on an indie budget was animation, with Unreal Engine video game graphics software playing a central role in the process. The finished look is certainly unusual, yet the technique has a major advantage: it lets the film’s anti-authoritarian bite and offbeat British humor land without being smoothed over by Hollywood-style homogenization.

Rogue Trooper has a considerable amount of mythology to establish. Following an opening-credits sequence featuring artwork from the original comics, the movie launches into a Star Wars-style crawl explaining the conflict between the Norts and Southers on Nu-Earth. It also introduces the Genetic Infantrymen, engineered to endure the planet’s poisonous atmosphere and equipped with biochips that preserve their brains if their bodies are destroyed. Just as the exposition threatens to overstay its welcome, it closes with a dry aside about the Infantrymen’s fate: “seems a bit unfair, innit.” That line captures the movie’s voice perfectly. Whenever the dense lore starts to overwhelm, the comedy pulls it back into focus.

The story begins with four Genetic Infantrymen, though a brutal battle soon reduces the unit to one survivor: number 19, voiced by Aneurin Barnard. He is joined by the brain chips of his fallen comrades, housed in his gun, voiced by Jack Lowden — the Slow Horses actor rumored to be the next James Bond — his helmet, voiced by Daryl McCormack, and his backpack, voiced by Reece Shearsmith. Yes, this is an ultraviolent cyberpunk war movie in which a talking backpack is one of the central characters. TIFF’s description notes that the comics influenced Warhammer 40K, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and James Cameron’s Avatar. Maybe Dora the Explorer, too, though that is probably just a case of great minds thinking alike. Beyond the jokes, watching Rogue Trooper as a newcomer can feel like a game of tracing influences. The parallels with Moon are apparent, while its political satire also brought Fallout to mind.

It is also ideal for a round of “name that voice,” given the number of cherished comedians and character actors populating Nu-Earth. Matt Berry and Jemaine Clement turn up as sleazy war profiteers, while Peter Serafinowicz gives Nort sniper Vichy a ridiculous French accent. Sean Bean and Diane Morgan voice 19’s commanders, and Hayley Atwell plays Venus Bluegenes, a rogue superwoman who battles giant mechs and will almost certainly send certain corners of Bluesky into a frenzy. The point is clear: this is a terrific voice cast, and the movie becomes more entertaining as more of its players enter the picture.

The movie improves as it continues

The plot of Rogue Trooper grows more compelling as it heads into increasingly strange territory, and the animation itself seemed to improve as the runtime progressed. That may simply reflect getting used to the visual style, or perhaps the later material benefited from the film’s lengthy production cycle. Either way, the action is noticeably stronger in the back half. The first-act fights can feel oddly weightless, dulling their physical impact. By contrast, when 19 faces off against giant mutant babies in a beat-’em-up near the end, every punch has real force.

While the producers have said they didn’t want the movie to be too video game-like, the fact of the matter is the animation does look like a video game. This sort of realistic-ish, mo-cap-enhanced animation rendered in this budget-friendly way inevitably looks like a game. The regular human characters are caricatured in a way that dodges strict realism and evokes the comic book, though textured in a way that still has one foot in the uncanny valley.

“Rogue Trooper” is a film made for a specific audience: people who enjoy a pretty good comedy episode of “Love Death + Robots.” Not as mind-blowing as the best “Love Death + Robots” episodes, not as facile as the worst — just a solid bit of digitally animated cyberpunk action with a bunch of wacky jokes, a bit of heart (stick through the end credits for the director’s dedication to the people of Ukraine), and enough over-the-top brutal deaths to make the Midnight Madness audience applaud. It’s not transcendent, but if you like the type of thing it’s doing, you will like this movie. I like this type of thing, and I might just want to check out some of those comics now.
