During a snorkeling excursion in southern Hawaii, an out-of-town visitor allegedly attacked the captain of the boat, stabbing him multiple times in the head and body, according to law enforcement officials.
Inset: Avery Nissen (Hawaii Police Department). Background: A section of Honokōhau Harbor in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii (Google Maps).
Avery Nissen, 21, faces charges including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault, as revealed by the Hawaii Police Department on Friday. He is currently detained with bail set at $1,570,000.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when Nissen was aboard a fishing boat with the captain and other passengers near Kailua-Kona, a town located on Hawaii’s western shore. The group was part of a scheduled three-hour snorkeling tour, authorities stated.
Police report that Nissen, a resident of eastern Kansas, allegedly attacked the 62-year-old captain using a fillet knife. Other individuals on the boat managed to subdue him, preventing further harm.
Officers allege that at some point, Nissen attacked the 62-year-old boat captain with a fillet knife. The suspect — who is from eastern Kansas — had to be restrained by other people on the boat.
At about 3:21 p.m., patrol officers responded to the Honokōhau Harbor in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, because they were told a fishing vessel “was returning from sea with the victim and suspect of a stabbing incident onboard.” Once the boat came in from the sea, Nissen was arrested.
The boat captain “sustained a stab wound to the lower abdomen and numerous knife cuts to the head and hands,” police said on Friday. He was brought to an area hospital “where he remains in stable condition.”
Authorities say the motive behind the alleged attack is unknown, and they asked anyone with additional information about it to contact them.
Nissen is scheduled to appear in Kona District Court on Monday.
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — Commencing today, South Carolina has imposed a statewide ban on burning due to heightened wildfire risks.
In recent months, the CSRA has seen a significant lack of rainfall, resulting in conditions that are increasingly susceptible to wildfires.
The South Carolina Forestry Commission is advising residents to refrain from lighting unnecessary fires, as they can easily spiral out of control under current conditions.
“Presently, any fire poses a significant risk to us all. Fires can be fueled just as much by dry materials as they can by the wind. When these elements are combined, the result could be catastrophic,” explained Sgt. Daniel Smith from North Augusta Public Safety.
These fire dangers are exacerbated by the ongoing drought, reduced humidity levels, and the potential for strong winds across the state, creating a critical situation for fire outbreaks.
“When it’s this dry – energy release component values are at high-to-critical levels – we’re just as likely, if not more, to see wildfires that are fuel-driven rather than wind-driven. Add the other volatile conditions of increased wind and lower relative humidity, and it becomes an especially precarious situation,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones in a statement on social media. “These conditions not only increase the likelihood of wildfires igniting easily and spreading rapidly, but would also make them more difficult for firefighters to control.”
There have been two large wildfires in our South Carolina viewing area this year, the Woodlawn fire and the Sunnybrook Drive fire. Both fires burned across hundreds of acres.
“We’ve trended this direction for the past three years. Every year they get bigger. We’ve had airplanes in the air twice this year,” Sgt. Smith said. “And in my memory, I couldn’t tell you when or if that’s happened in Aiken County before.”
We haven’t had any measurable rain since March and so far in April, we’ve only had a trace amount. The moderate drought conditions we are under coupled with the massive amount of fuel left behind by hurricane Helene is concerning.
“We’ve put some time between us and Helene now. So all of the damage from that, that’s still an areas that you can’t see, is getting age on. It’s continued to dry out. It continues to be a problem,” Smith said.
The ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including yard debris, prescribed burning, campfires, bonfires and other recreational fires in all unincorporated areas of the state.
While the ban does not apply to grills or fires used in approved enclosures, Forestry Commission officials urge caution when burning outdoors under these exemptions. They added that, other than grills, they prefer people don’t use them at all.
“The only legal fires you can do are in chimneys or portable fire fireplaces. There are some exceptions for a permanent campfire rings that are made of stone, masonry or metal. You know, those are still extremely dangerous. We would ask people really to to hold off from that,” said Doug Wood, director of communication with the South Carolina Forestry Commission.
People should also be careful when using any equipment that could create sparks and avoid parking on dry grass. Using fireworks is a bad idea too.
Authorities say people should take this burn ban seriously.
If you are caught illegally burning during a burn ban, you may be fined up to $500. But if a destructive fire starts because of you, you could face serious consequences.
“If you start a wildfire and it burns your neighbor’s yard or property or, structures or heaven forbid, leads to loss of life, you’re just as civilly liable for that as you would be in any other case where you’ve acted irresponsibly. So, that can that can be, many more fines and jail time,” warned Wood.
The Palmetto State’s burn ban is in effect until further notice. Wood said that won’t likely happen until South Carolina sees some significant rain.

During an exclusive meet-and-greet event in Sydney, the Duchess of Sussex posed a thought-provoking question to her dedicated fans: after a lifetime dedicated to uplifting women, is it time to focus on herself?
Meghan Markle shared these sentiments with a select audience at the Her Best Life retreat on Friday, marking the culmination of her four-day trip to Australia alongside Prince Harry.
Attendees paid up to £1,700 for VIP access, which included prime seating for the Q&A session and a photo opportunity with the Duchess herself.
In her 90-minute discussion, Meghan asked, “I’ve spent all my life investing in women, can I finally invest in me?”—a question that resonated with those present.
Addressing the audience, she candidly spoke about the challenges of living in the public eye, attributing much of the criticism she faces to others’ personal projections.
She said the last decade, during which she celebrated happy moments such as her wedding and the birth of her two children, had been tainted by the vicious attacks.
Meghan said motherhood had taught her to have perspective and patience, something she needed, ‘given what our life is like’.
The Duchess of Sussex asked superfans if it was finally time to invest in herself after spending ‘all her life investing in women’ during a VIP meet and greet event in Sydney
Meghan Markle (pictured with Gemma O’Neill) was speaking to a private audience at Her Best Life retreat on Friday as her four-day trip to Australia with Prince Harry came to an end
It is understood that organisers of the event, which was held at the InterContinental hotel near to Coogee beach, had paid £120,000 for Meghan’s appearance.
Tickets included a gala dinner of Hiramasa kingfish tostada, vannella burrata, riverina Angus beef tenderloin, free range chicken, coconut crumble and mango and passionfruit pavlova.
Prince Harry was also in attendance, and rose to his feet as his wife entered the room to greet her with a kiss and help her onto the stage.
Meghan wore a cashmere tank from Australian brand Scanlan & Theodore paired with beige trousers and nude heels for the Q&A chat.
High-profile guests included radio queens Jackie O Henderson and Carrie Bickmore, along with reality TV star Megan Towner.
Meghan also spoke alongside her friend Gemma O’Neill – the talent manager who represents Jackie O.
A strict ‘no filming’ rule was in place during the event but a photographer was on hand to capture the key moments.
A guest, who did not wish to be named, told The Times: ‘She was saying that she wanted to be an antidote for everything online that was vicious, venomous and unfairly cruel.
‘She also said that Harry had kept her safe, especially from the lions and elephants when they went on a date to Botswana.’
Meghan and Harry quietly slip out of Sydney after the Duchess appeared at the retreat
The Duke and Duchess arrive to meet volunteer first responders from Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club during a visit to Bondi Beach
On Saturday morning, the group was due to enjoy an optional yoga class at 7.45am before ‘easing into the day’ with a buffet breakfast.
But unbeknownst to the attendees, their star guest Meghan had already left the building.
The Duke and Duchess quietly slipped out of the hotel’s underground car park at 7.20am local time today.
They travelled in a small motorcade of one NSW police BMW and two glossy Range Rovers to the Sydney international airport.
The Daily Mail understands they were booked on a 9am American Airlines flight to Los Angeles, where they will land Saturday morning California time.
There they will be reunited with their children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, at their mansion in Montecito.
The duchess has faced criticism for monetising aspects of her trip Down Under.
This includes a partnership with AI fashion website OneOff where fans can buy the clothes she’s wearing.
Meghan is expected to earn a portion of the company’s sales commission, which ranges from 10 per cent to 25 per cent per item sold.
She is also an investor in the AI-powered fashion business.
It is not clear how much the duchess expects to make, but the firm said of its deal with Meghan: ‘She cares about fashion and was motivated to invest not only to expand her portfolio, but to help uplift the fashion designers she is a fan of.’
One of the outfits advertised online was what she wore to meet survivors of the Bondi terror attack.
The Duchess of Sussex had looked deeply moved as she listened to stories from those who witnessed the horrific antisemitic massacre in December that claimed 15 lives.
Meghan also embraced Jessica Chapnik Kahn, who survived while shielding her five-year-old daughter after attending a Hanukkah party.
She and Harry also spoke to first responders to the Bondi terrorist attack, including lifeguards on the beach.
Goku has long stood at the forefront of Dragon Ball Super as its main protagonist, a role he has held throughout the entire Dragon Ball series for years. Despite his iconic status, recent criticisms of Goku’s character development, coupled with the franchise’s repeated themes and a formula that some find predictable, suggest that it may be time for Earth’s legendary protector to step aside. This could pave the way for one of his many well-loved allies to take center stage in battling the forces of evil.
Fans of characters like Gohan and Vegeta, along with other favorites from the Dragon Ball universe, are eager for a shift in the spotlight. Historical moments, such as the Cell Saga in Dragon Ball Z and the Super Hero Saga in Dragon Ball Super, have already proven that these characters are more than capable of carrying the narrative. These instances highlight that Goku’s presence, while iconic, may not be as essential as it once was, signaling a potential shift in the series’ dynamics.
While Vegeta is technically the second lead in Dragon Ball Super, his role often feels more significant. Although Goku typically takes center stage during pivotal battles against formidable foes like Beerus, Hit, Jiren, and Moro, Vegeta’s character arc provides intricate and compelling development. His journey offers rich narratives that sometimes overshadow Goku’s more straightforward path, suggesting that Vegeta might be ready to embrace an even larger role within the series.
Vegeta is Ready to Step Out of Goku’s Shadow in 2026
Vegeta is the deuteragonist of Dragon Ball Super, but he often feels like so much more. Because while Goku is the face of the series, and he’s ultimately the one who gets the big climactic fights against enemies like Beerus, Hit, Jiren, and Moro, Vegeta is the one who gets all the best character development, and who has far more going on narratively.
On a more shallow level, millions of fans would love to see Vegeta finally get to score some wins against major villains, after being relegated to being a jobber for decades. More importantly, though, the series could follow Vegeta as he works to find a form that suits him better than Ultra Ego, develops into the more mature man without a Goku obsession seen in Dragon Ball GT, and spends time training both his experienced son Trunks, and his inexperienced daughter Bulla.
Gohan Has Always Deserved to Inherit Goku’s Mantle
Back in Dragon Ball Z, Akira Toriyama attempted to replace Goku with Gohan as the main protagonist of the series, but ultimately deemed it a failed experiment. However, with Toyotarou now writing Dragon Ball Super on his own, it feels worth seeing if he can execute the concept better than his mentor, especially off the back of Gohan’s leading role in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
Gohan has finally mastered his rage, become the very strongest with his Beast form, and found balance between his role as a guardian of Earth, and his more natural place as a dorky husband, father, and insect researcher. It would be very easy for Dragon Ball Super to pick up where it just left off, for Gohan to be the one to face Black Frieza, and for the story to keep its focus on the characters closest to him, primarily Piccolo and Pan.
Trunks is the Most-Developed of the Younger Saiyans
Super Saiyan Trunks gets excited in Dragon Ball Super.Image via Toei Animation
Trunks is a nepo-baby in multiple senses, obviously getting all the perks of being the son of Bulma and Vegeta, but also being forever attached to the fan-favorite character that is his alternate-timeline counterpart, Future Trunks. Because of this tie, Trunks has always been given more attention than the other young Z-Fighters, most notably Goten, with him having received individual focus in ways the others never have, most notably in Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon.
Trunks has proven that he can carry stories, and while he may have been underserved in Dragon Ball GT, it could still be worthwhile seeing the awkward teenager seen in the latest chapter of Dragon Ball Super grow into the mature CEO seen in the previous anime. Trunks being the focus of the series would also naturally keep Vegeta and Bulma in the spotlight, and bring some much-needed attention to Goten and Bulla.
Goten is in Desperate Need of More Attention in Dragon Ball Super

Goten’s historic lack of attention, in spite of his prominent role in the Buu Saga, and his status as the second son of Goku, feels like it’s led to him having gained more favor among fans overtime, the audience, and even Toyotarou, just feeling bad for him and wanting to see him get something to do. With both the fans now on his side, and more room to grow and develop than almost any other Z-Fighter, Goten could actually make for an effective new protagonist.
Goten was always the spitting image of his dad as a kid but, as of Dragon Ball Super, he’s grown much closer to his Dragon Ball GT self. As the main character, Goten would bring the same naivety, pure-heartedness, and love for adventure that Goku always did, but with far deeper levels of stupidity, and an actual interest in romance; I may be the only one who would love to see more of Goten with the only character even dumber than him, Valese, but I stand by them being adorable together.
Pan is the Natural Successor to Goku and Gohan
Pan attemps to fly in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.Image via Toei Animation
Pan has been treated exceptionally well by Dragon Ball Super, with many feeling that the series has completely redeemed her poor portrayal in Dragon Ball GT. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero even gave her a leading role, and this absolutely needs to be followed-up on, rather than just made a one-time thing, especially as she’s likely to mostly sit the Black Frieza Saga out.
The granddaughter of Goku, and daughter of Gohan, Pan is the most natural fit to continue their legacies. With the love of combat of her grandpa, the brains of her dad, and both a sense of privilege and a need to prove herself to her elders that previous protagonists never had, she could bring something completely new to the table, while also carrying on the traditional spirit of Dragon Ball. Plus, DBS is currently the only mainline Dragon Ball anime to have never featured a super strong little kid as its main hero, and that should be fixed.
Broly is the Most Interesting Character in the Dragon Ball Super Manga Right Now
Of the five current main characters of Dragon Ball Super, Broly stands out as the only one who hasn’t been a central focus in the franchise for decades. Unlike Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and Piccolo, Broly still has a long way to go in his character development and still has new stories to be told, arguably making him the best leading man of them all.
Broly should, without question, at least be the protagonist of the Black Frieza Saga. He’s just finally returned to the story after being absent for several arcs, and there’s ample room to explore not just him, but his friends Cheelai and Lemo. He also received some of the best writing in all of modern Dragon Ball in his eponymous movie, surpassing his non-canon counterpart as a character in every way, and he remains directly tied to Frieza’s goals, as the galactic tyrant may now stand as the strongest, but he knows that he still needs a partner, and that he wants it to be the Legendary Super Saiyan.
Fans Have Been Waiting For Uub to Take the Spotlight For Decades
Goku envisages his younger self alongside Uub in Dragon Ball ZImage via Shueisha
Rather infamously, DBZ ended with Goku leaving to train with his new apprentice, Uub, only for Dragon Ball GT to completely sideline the human reincarnation of Kid Buu. Dragon Ball Super has continuously delayed doing anything substantial with Uub itself, but when the series finally moves past the End of Z in the timeline, it would make total sense for him to become the new main hero.
Uub could step up as the protagonist right after the Black Frieza Saga, with the story following him as he trains under Goku. With him already being exceptionally powerful, but not as absurdly over-powered as Goku, Dragon Ball Super would be able to maintain its usual style of action-driven storytelling, while having an easier time finding new ways to introduce threats capable of posing a serious challenge to the heroes.
Caulifla Could Take Dragon Ball Super in a Completely New Direction

For years, fans have been waiting for Vegeta to make good on his promise to Cabba, and visit Planet Sadala in Universe 6. Right now, it seems like that’s never going to happen, but that doesn’t mean the Universe 6 Saiyan trio should be abandoned as characters entirely. Even if just for an arc, it could be interesting to see a story just about Cabba, Kale, and Caulifla, and we already know this could work, because the leader of this group was specifically designed to be a parallel to Goku.
Fans still know barely anything about Universe 6, and there’s no telling what kind of monsters are hiding in it that are more powerful than not just the Saiyan trio, but Fusion Warrior Kefla and Hit. By temporarily making Caulifla the main protagonist, fans could learn so much more about her, her gang, her relationship with Kale, and the other major characters and settings of Universe 6. Such a story could even lead to Caulifla and company ascending to Super Saiyan Blue, or beyond, giving them the strength to truly rival Universe 7.
President Donald Trump has initiated a significant move to expedite the federal review process for psychedelic drugs, aiming to unlock new avenues for mental health treatments.
WASHINGTON — In a bid to enhance mental health care, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Saturday that calls for a swift federal review of psychedelic substances as potential treatments for mental health issues.
“Today’s executive order marks a pivotal step towards offering hope to individuals grappling with severe symptoms, giving them a chance to reclaim their lives and pursue happiness,” Trump remarked during the signing ceremony.
The decision comes on the heels of a 2024 study conducted by Stanford University, which revealed promising results using the psychoactive compound ibogaine, derived from plants, to aid combat veterans suffering from traumatic brain injuries.
Such injuries are a predominant factor in the onset of various mental health challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and elevated suicide rates among veterans.
Few treatments have been effective in managing long-term effects of TBI, according to the study, but researchers found that the psychoactive drug effectively helped to reduce symptoms with no serious side effects.
Several veterans who participated in the study called the drug was “life changing.”
Sean, a veteran in his 50s from Arizona with six combat deployments, was one of the study participants. He said ibogaine saved his life.
“Before the treatment, I was living life in a blizzard with zero visibility and a cold, hopeless, listless feeling,” he said in the report. “After ibogaine, the storm lifted.”
Ibogaine is found in the roots of the African shrub iboga and has been used for ceremonial and healing purposes for centuries. However, it has been designated a Schedule I drug in the U.S. since the 1970s, which is the most restrictive category for illegal or high-risk drugs.
However, the order signals that the administration is taking steps to ease access to psychedelics that Trump said were already designated as potential breakthroughs by federal regulators.
The Food and Drug Administration next week will issue national priority vouchers for three psychedelics, which the agency’s commissioner, Marty Makary, said will allow certain drugs to be approved quickly “if they are in line with our national priorities.” It is the first time the FDA has offered that fast-tracking to any psychedelics.
The FDA is also taking steps to clear the way for the first-ever human trials of ibogaine in the United States.
No psychedelic has been approved in the United States, but a number of them are being studied in large trials for various mental health conditions, including psilocybin, MDMA and LSD.
All those drugs remain illegal, classified as Schedule I substances alongside drugs such as heroin.
Two states — Oregon and Colorado — have legalized psychedelic therapy with psilocybin.
On April 17, American Airlines clarified that it has no plans to merge with United Airlines, quashing any speculation about a transformative deal that would likely face intense regulatory examination.
Uniting two of the largest network carriers in the United States would represent the most significant consolidation in over ten years, further narrowing a domestic market already dominated by four major players. According to OAG data, by 2025, American and United were projected as the largest airlines globally in terms of available capacity, both for domestic and international routes.
Such a merger would undoubtedly attract significant scrutiny from regulators, labor unions, and consumer advocates, all concerned about potential increases in fares and decreased competition. Industry analysts and officials believe these factors would considerably reduce the likelihood of regulatory approval.

American and United also operate with substantial overlaps, particularly at key hubs like Chicago O’Hare and several locations in Texas.
American Airlines stated, “While adjustments in the airline market may be necessary, merging with United would harm competition and consumers,” emphasizing that such a move would contradict their understanding of the Trump administration’s antitrust policies.
United Airlines declined to comment, while the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The White House has previously said it has no opinion on a potential United Airlines deal for American Airlines.
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby pitched the potential for merging with American Airlines in a meeting with US President Donald Trump in late February, Reuters reported on Monday.
The meeting with Trump was three days before the start of the US-Israeli war with Iran that sent jet fuel prices soaring and has led airlines to raise fares and fees to offset higher costs.
Kirby has argued to administration officials that a combined airline would be a stronger competitor in international markets and noted the Trump administration has focused on US trade deficits around the globe, according to sources.
But one person close to the White House had told Reuters there was skepticism about such a tie-up, given its potential impact on competition and ticket prices at a time when the administration is already focused on rising costs for consumers ahead of midterm elections in November.
LONDON – At a recent auction, a life jacket worn by a passenger who survived the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic fetched an astounding 670,000 pounds ($906,000).
The life jacket, once worn by Laura Mabel Francatelli, a first-class passenger who escaped the ill-fated voyage on a lifeboat, bears signatures from her and fellow survivors.
This notable artifact was the highlight of a Titanic memorabilia auction held by Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, western England. The life jacket significantly surpassed its presale estimate of 250,000 to 350,000 pounds, ultimately going to an anonymous bidder who participated via telephone.
Another remarkable sale at the event was a lifeboat seat cushion, which was acquired for 390,000 pounds ($527,000) by the proprietors of two Titanic museums located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and Branson, Missouri.
The auction prices mentioned include the buyer’s premium, a standard fee added to the sale price.
“These record-breaking prices illustrate the continuing interest in the Titanic story, and the respect for the passengers and crew whose stories are immortalized by these items of memorabilia,” auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said.
Billed as the world’s most luxurious ocean liner and described as “practically unsinkable,” the Titanic hit an iceberg off Newfoundland during its maiden voyage from England to New York. It sank within hours on April 15, 1912. Some 1,500 of the 2,200 passengers and crew died.
The Titanic is still a subject of worldwide fascination, in part because of the range of passengers aboard the ship, from paupers to plutocrats.
Francatelli was traveling with her employer, fashion designer Lucy Duff Gordon, and Lucy’s husband Cosmo Duff Gordon. All three survived in the ship’s lifeboat No. 1, which was launched carrying 12 people despite having capacity for 40. Its failure to pick up survivors from the frigid water became a source of controversy.
The record auction price for a piece of Titanic memorabilia is 1.56 million pounds (almost $2 million at the time) paid in 2024 for a gold pocket watch given to the captain of RMS Carpathia, the ship that rescued 700 Titanic survivors.

George Gallagher Biography – George Gallagher Wiki
George Gallagher serves as the presiding judge for the 396th Judicial District Court in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. His tenure on the bench began with his election on November 7, 2000. Prior to assuming this role, Gallagher was a partner at the law firm Zachry, Hill, Beatty, Butcher & Gallagher. His legal career also includes experience as an assistant district attorney in the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office.
Gallagher’s academic journey includes earning a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University, followed by a Juris Doctor from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1982. He holds a Board Certification in Criminal Law from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, underscoring his expertise in the field.
Beyond his judicial duties, Judge Gallagher is actively involved in the legal community. He is a member of the Tarrant County Bar Association, the Tarrant County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and the Eldon B. Mahon American Inn of Court. Politically, he is affiliated with the Republican Party.
Controversy
In 2016, Judge Gallagher was at the center of a high-profile case, presiding over the trial of State of Texas v. Terry Lee Morris. Due to Morris’ disruptive actions during pretrial hearings, the bailiffs recommended the use of a stun cuff on Morris’ ankle throughout the trial. Judge Gallagher authorized the activation of the stun cuff three times during proceedings.
The case took a significant turn upon appeal when the El Paso Court of Appeals overturned Morris’ conviction. The court determined that the activation of the stun cuff was not justified by legitimate security concerns, raising serious constitutional questions. Consequently, the appellate court vacated the conviction and mandated a retrial, citing fundamental issues with the original trial’s adherence to constitutional standards.
The Texas State Commission on Judicial Conduct determined the Honorable George Gallagher should be publicly warned for engaging in willful conduct that cast public discredit upon the judiciary and the administration of justice in violation of Article V, Section 1-a(6)(A) of the Texas Constitution, when he ordered the activation of Mr. Morris’ stun cuff which resulted in injury to Mr. Morris and his absence from the remainder of the guilt-innocence phase of his own criminal trial.
A tragic incident unfolded at a Turkish middle school on Wednesday, where a 14-year-old boy allegedly killed at least nine individuals and injured 13 others, as reported by media outlets and officials.
The young suspect is believed to have executed the attack using firearms owned by his father, a former police officer, according to statements from Regional Governor Mukerrem Unluer. This marks the second such incident to occur in Turkey within just two days.
Governor Unluer informed reporters that the student arrived at the school with the weapons concealed in his backpack. “He entered two classrooms and began firing indiscriminately, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries,” Unluer stated, according to various media sources.
Among the victims were eight students and one teacher, as confirmed by Turkey’s Interior Minister, Mustafa Ciftci, during a press briefing covered by Reuters.
In the aftermath, paramedics rushed to provide medical care to injured students following the harrowing school shooting that took place in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, on April 15, 2026. (Image courtesy of Ihlas News Agency/Reuters)
Ciftci was also adamant that this was a “sole incident” and not a terror attack.
The shooting took place at Ayser Çalık Middle School in Turkey’s Kahramanmaras region, roughly 140 miles west of the high school where another student killed himself after injuring 16 others in a shooting one day earlier.
Shooting deaths are rare in Turkey, with just over 2.6 per 100,000 residents every year, compared to the U.S.’s 14.5. Gun applicants must be at least 21 years old and go through a rigorous medical clearance and background check process.
Gun acquisition is, however, considerably more expedient for professionals with certain careers, such as law enforcement.

“Managing the process with sound judgment, protecting societal peace, and particularly ensuring the psychological security of our children are of utmost importance,” the country’s Ministry of Communications also posted on X.
“It is essential for our media organizations to act with the utmost sense of responsibility in their broadcasting policies,” the post continued, adding that “such incidents create a highly fertile ground for disinformation.”
Four chief inspectors and four inspector generals have been assigned to an investigation into the incident, the Turkish Ministry of the Interior wrote on X.
