Massive South Bend Apartment Fire Forces Evacuations

0

A large fire erupted early Tuesday at an apartment complex under construction in South Bend, Indiana, prompting the evacuation of people in a nearby residential building, local officials said.

According to the South Bend Fire Department, the blaze broke out shortly after midnight at the Stadium Flats apartments near S. Lafayette & W. South Street.

Responding crews found heavy flames and thick smoke at the site after reports indicated the fire had spread across the unfinished structure and involved a crane.

Although the fire sent a “significant amount of embers and debris” into the area, firefighters prevented the flames from reaching the neighboring Diamond View Apartments.

Residents of the Diamond View Apartments were evacuated during the fire, with officials saying the heat damaged several windows on the building’s top floor. The building has 60 units of affordable housing, according to a report last year in the South Bend Tribune.

The Stadium Flats building was set to introduce 92 additional affordable units to downtown South Bend. Before the fire, construction was expected to be completed by spring 2027.

Both buildings are near the training facility for the South Bend Cubs, the city’s minor league baseball team. Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading to the 17,000-square-foot complex, which is right next to the baseball stadium.

Nigella Lawson’s Ageless Look Leaves Fans Stunned

0

Nearly three decades have passed since Nigella Lawson first captivated television audiences with her glamorous curves, flirtatious charm and famously suggestive approach to home cooking.

Now, as the self-styled Domestic Goddess prepares for her first major UK TV role in six years, fans could be forgiven for thinking time has barely touched her.

The 66-year-old celebrity chef was confirmed in January as Prue Leith’s replacement on The Great British Bake Off, after the 86-year-old judge chose to leave the Channel 4 favourite following almost ten years in the tent.

On Monday night, Nigella appeared alongside fellow judge Paul Hollywood and presenters Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding at the official launch of the show, ahead of the 2026 series debut on September 22.

The mother of two looked effortlessly radiant at the event, drawing comparisons with her appearance when she launched her first cookery series, Nigella Bites, in 1999. So what lies behind her remarkably youthful look?

She’s just as well known for her flawless, porcelain complexion as she is for whipping up culinary masterpieces in the kitchen – yet Nigella’s glowing skin has nothing to do with Botox or fillers.

The chef believes there’s ‘no point to cosmetic work’. Neither does she shy away from a diet of high-fat food such as butter, and doesn’t ‘punish herself trying to look like a model’.

However, there’s one method she does stick to for radiant skin, explaining: ‘I’m also allergic to the sun so I don’t go into the sun and that makes a difference.’

On Monday evening, Nigella Lawson (pictured) joined fellow judge Paul Hollywood and hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding at the official launch of the Channel 4 programme, ahead of the 2026 series release on September 22

She told The Mirror this year: ‘It’s been [that way] my whole life, but it’s got worse. I just can’t go in it. It’s a bore, actually.’

According to skin experts, it is possible to actually be allergic to the sun, known medically as photodermatitis. It occurs when your immune system overreacts to sunlight, resulting in itchy, painful, or blistering rashes on sun-exposed skin.

Experts also say that avoiding the sun’s UV rays is among the most effective ways to keep skin looking young.

The cookbook author added that she refuses to jump on the cosmetic ‘tweakment’ bandwagon, believing that ‘there’s no point’.

Instead, the secret to her wrinkle-free skin seems to be thanks to sleeping in a cold room with absolutely no central heating on and using a pair of silicone gloves.

The domestic goddess has an ‘immutable nighttime regime’, which involves a cleansing and skincare routine followed by a very chilly night’s sleep.

When asked in 2024 the secrets to her ageless appearance by one of her followers on X, she revealed that every night she washes her face with a muslin and Temple Spa’s In the Beginning cleanser.

She said she then massages in Prickly Pear Seed Oil by skincare brand Victoria Health, adding: ‘And no central heating in the bedroom!’

While it might be tempting to put on the central heating overnight during the colder months, dermatologists have warned that it could lead to severely dry skin.

Leading skincare experts have said one of the biggest causes of dry and flaky skin in the winter months is coming into contact with air, indoors and outdoors, that lacks humidity.

Nigella also claimed in 2018 that she relies on silicone gloves, worth a modest £10, to smooth her skin and remove any impurities.

She confessed: ‘I am the sucker who buys things. I recently bought some washing up gloves with silicone bits on the palm for scrubbing. I exfoliate with them. I like them.’

Meanwhile, renowned for her curvaceous figure, Nigella has frequently spoken in the past about her great fondness for food and dislike of diets.

She said in 2012: ‘I remember Elizabeth Hurley once said, “It’s either the cookie jar or the size six jeans”. Well, fair enough. She would rather the size six jeans, I would rather the cookie jar.

‘In the end, you make that choice. If wearing certain clothes matters most to you, then that is going to be your priority, whereas I could probably do that for two days but my real priority is eating.’

London-born Nigella, who split from second husband Charles Saatchi in 2013, recently slammed the use of controversial weight loss drug Ozempic.

She said she has spent her whole life ‘trying to help people not to feel food is the enemy’ and is someone who ‘would prefer to think about what I add to my diet than what I remove.’

She told The Times: ‘I read something once where someone said, ‘I was on Ozempic and it was the first time I didn’t think about food all the time.

‘I thought, ‘I can’t imagine anything worse than that. I take great pleasure in thinking about food all of the time.’

Speaking at a Q&A in 2015, Nigella also revealed that, despite her culinary prowess, she still enjoys tucking into fast food and other calorific treats, according to The Sun.

She explained: ‘You should not have any guilt about pleasure. You should only ever feel guilt if you don’t take pleasure. In certain moments, I do like a bit of plastic bread with a cheese triangle on. That can be delicious.’

Despite her indulgences, Nigella revealed she’d dropped from a UK size 16 to a UK size 12 in November 2017, thanks to her love of yoga.

She had previously shared two years earlier with Good Housekeeping magazine how the exercise was helping her to get in ‘better shape’.

‘I have never been on a diet to try to lose weight,’ she said. ‘I feel like I haven’t lost weight, but I’m possibly in better shape. I am doing a rather slow form of yoga now called iyengar.’

She added: ‘No one should be put on this earth to go on a diet! No one should eat themselves ill either.’

Speaking on Nigella’s seemingly unchanging face, Smita Ahluwalia, skin health expert and clinical facialist told The Daily Mail: ‘Nigella is known not to be a fan of the sun, and she credits her youthful skin to staying out of direct sunlight.

‘This means she has helped protect her skin from the ageing effects of UVA and UVB rays, including fine lines and sun damage. She also has olive skin, which can age well.

‘Not wearing much makeup over the years may also have worked in her favour, as she hasn’t overloaded or overworked her skin with heavy makeup on a daily basis.

‘Being too thin can also age the face, and Nigella has maintained a fuller, healthy-looking face over the years. She is a less is more type of person and is comfortable with herself rather than trying to change herself.’

Thanks to her curvaceous figure and innuendo-filled programmes, the star has been seducing television viewers for almost three decades – and is regarded as one of the sexiest women in the world.

But the cookery icon insisted last year that she’s far from a sex symbol, pointing out her ‘lazy’ beauty regime.

‘I don’t get the whole sexy thing. Often I am not wearing makeup at all,’ Nigella, 65, told the Salon Confidential podcast with stylist Andreas Wild in 2025.

‘If I’ve done my own hair, I don’t brush it, I mess it up. Instead of brushing it, I tip my head upside down. I do try to do it sometimes, but I’m incredibly lazy. If people recognise me, I’m astonished.’

She also admitted there is a huge downside to her job, pointing out burn marks on her arms. ‘I am very clumsy. I mean, look, I mean, the amount of burns.’

The TV star even admitted that she felt ‘offended to be recognised’ during a recent encounter on the London Underground, explaining: ‘I was on the Tube the other day and someone said, “Is it you?” ‘

‘I said, ‘God, I am looking such a fright. I’m almost offended to be recognised”.’

Whilst she maintains a low-key approach to her looks, Nigella is a stickler when it comes to table manners, and she has one major pet peeve in the kitchen.

‘I’m not super hygienic, I can tell you. My fridge is a bit of a terrible mess. But I cannot bear it if people use the same knife for the butter and then put it into some marmalade.

Despite her onscreen reputation, Nigella has always protested she never set out to sexualise her shows with her trademark innuendos.

Speaking in 2017, the star explained the sexy reputation she’s earned was owed to clever editing by the production company.

‘I never ever wanted to be on TV – I’m not a performer,’ she said when probed on the topic.

‘When that first series came out I was astonished to be told I was suggestive and coquettish and so forth because the reality is I’m a straightforward person.

‘I haven’t got a coquettish manner so I want to say two things … One is television is glamorising so they always make you look nicer than you look. Two is that it’s an editor’s medium, so obviously how you put something together will reinforce that.’

‘But I’ll do something and people will say it’s rude or a double entendre and I feel like saying “well can you please explain it to me, I don’t get it?”‘

Elsewhere, in 2019, Nigella told OK! magazine how she uses makeup as ‘armour’ but admired people who are brave enough to go without makeup on.

Discussing the star’s youthful makeup tricks, Laura Kay, beauty and makeup expert and founder of Laura Kay London, told the Daily Mail: ‘Nigella’s trick is subtle enhancements as she has matured – she appears to have put in what time took away.

‘Why so many people make a comparison is due to the fact she has kept her hairstyle the same and her makeup is still natural.

‘Why I say she has put in what time took away is because, from a trained eye, she appears to have used techniques to make herself look more youthful and fresh. It’s undeniable she looks fabulous.

‘If you apply a clever set of rules in beauty as you mature, you can enhance your features to appear younger.

‘Nigella’s hair is noticeably more bouncy, and her lips and brows are more defined. Her lips are also slightly plumper. She hardly wore makeup when she was younger – only very light makeup – and today she still has her signature “undone look” to some extent.

‘Today, she could be using contouring to help define and flatter her features such as cheekbones, and her brows are more filled in and defined.

‘She appears to opt for heavier makeup nowadays but it still looks very natural – it’s only when you compare her older photos that you really notice she is wearing more makeup than she used to.’

Prince George Starts at Eton College as Proud Parents Look On

0

Prince George has begun his first day at Eton College, arriving at the historic school with the Prince and Princess of Wales by his side.

The young royal, second in line to the throne, appeared every inch the future king — while also looking like any 13-year-old facing the excitement and nerves of a major new beginning.

Dressed in a shirt and tie, dark blazer, chinos and brown suede shoes, George walked briskly with his parents through Eton College’s famous quadrangle, known to pupils as School Yard, as heavy rain fell around them.

The family entered beneath Lupton’s Tower, the school’s 16th-century gatehouse clock tower, before crossing the cobbled Yard together.

Near the bronze statue of Henry VI, Eton’s founder, which stands at the centre of the quadrangle, the Wales family stopped to greet headmaster Simon Henderson and Sir Nicholas Coleridge, the school’s provost and chair of its governing body.

Prince William was smartly dressed in a dark suit, while Catherine wore an elegant green flowing dress and heels and carried a large umbrella.

William was the first to shake hands with the headmaster, then George, as the princess slightly hung back.

‘George welcome, good luck, enjoy,’ Mr Henderson smiled.

He then shook hands with Catherine before the provost introduced himself and they exchanged a few pleasantries.

While there were clearly nerves on both sides, there were also smiles all round – although the heavy rain drowned out the sound of their conversation.

Catherine gazed at her eldest son proudly before Mr Henderson invited the family to get out of the rain.

The princess was seen placing a protective arm on her son’s back as the door was shut behind them.

The Yard is the oldest part of the school alongside College Chapel, where pupils attend services three times a week.

After the welcome, George, William and Catherine were shown into the fourth-form passage in the original school building, which is understood to house the world’s oldest classroom.

Like other families, the couple will help George settle into his new bedroom. Pupils from other years will return to Eton when the school starts tomorrow.

Following the brief photocall and the picture release, it is William and Catherine’s fervent wish that George’s education will take place away from public view.

Signs have been posted around Windsor warning the public not to photograph the pupils when they are moving around the sprawling campus of school buildings between lessons.

Kensington Palace announced in June that their eldest child would be attending the Windsor boarding school where fees cost more than £65,000 per year.

It seems hard to believe that the self-assured young man in front of us was, only a few years ago, being introduced to the world by William and Catherine on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington – or pictured tousle-haired, his back-pack almost as big as him, on his first day at nursery.

The photocall had been arranged for 11am, half an hour or so before the rest of his fellow ‘F Blockers’ – Eton shorthand for Year 9 students – arrived.

It is the only time during the next five years George is likely to get any special treatment, and the decision was more about protecting the privacy of the other students.

All new pupils arrive in their own clothes before changing into Eton’s distinctive and historic uniform including black tailcoat, waistcoat and white tunic shirt.

Kensington Palace are set to release a photograph of that separately.

The prince and princess have made clear how grateful they are for the way the media and public have allowed all their three children to grow up and enjoy their education away from the spotlight, in return for regular pictorial updates and occasional public appearances, and hope this will continue for George as he moves through his senior school years.

Henry VI established the school in 1440, naming it ‘Kynge’s College of Our Ladye of Eton besyde Windesore’.

Alongside fee-paying students, provision was made for 70 ‘King’s scholars’ to receive free lodging and tuition. The tradition continues today with the school offering bursaries to pupils from less well-off backgrounds.

The young prince’s arrival at the exclusive public school varied markedly from his father’s first day on September 6, 1995.

Then, William, sporting a grey tweed jacket over matching smart trousers and a navy patterned tie, was photographed arriving at his boarding house in front of a large group of the world’s media and signing the register.

He was accompanied by his parents Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, who had by then been separated for three years, along with his younger brother, Prince Harry.

Only a small royal photographer rota captured such an historic moment in the now heir to the throne’s life.

Times change and, as royal aides now argue, it’s stressful enough joining a new school without doing it under the glare of hundreds of cameras.

Eton was always the front runner for William and Catherine when it came to choosing a senior school for their eldest child, but by no means a done deal.

The couple have been spotted checking out a number of boarding schools across the county, including Oundle in Northamptonshire and the princess’s own alma mater, Marlborough – although sources have indicated that the latter has always been a more likely choice for their daughter, Princess Charlotte.

What swung it was Eton’s proximity to the family’s ‘forever home’ at Windsor, Forest Lodge; the fact that the college has long experience of dealing with the complexities around high-profile students; and, of course, George’s own preference.

He is likely to be joined by a number of friends from Lambrook, the co-educational prep school in Berkshire he has attended with his siblings in recent years.

It also helps that William has genuinely fond memories of his own time there.

In an interview to mark his 18th birthday and imminent graduation from Eton, the heir spoke of how he had enjoyed attending Eton as ‘just another student’ and even admitted he’d ‘always liked the uniform’.

He also spoke of how much he had appreciated the support of staff such as his housemaster, Dr Gailey.

Ironically, given how synonymous Eton has become with royalty, it was something of a departure for William to even be sent there.

For centuries, generations of monarchs and their heirs were taught by tutors and had little experience of learning alongside their peers.

However both William’s grandfather and uncle on the Spencer side of the family had attended the school, while his mother also preferred its proximity to Windsor and London.

Charles was also known to have had a less than happy time at his own Scottish alma mater, Gordonstoun – although other members of the Royal Family subsequently went there and adored it – and was content with the choice.

It also enabled William to spend time with his beloved grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, and he still fondly talks of being able to regularly wander over to Windsor Castle to seek tea and sage advice.

William and Catherine have also gone on to break with tradition when it comes to their own children’s education.

George first attended a little £5.50-an-hour Montessori nursery school, Westacre near King’s Lynn in Norfolk, when his parents were based there while William was working as a pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance Service.

When the family moved back to Kensington Palace in 2017, George and Charlotte were enrolled at Thomas’s Battersea – a very popular but not overly posh private London prep school.

In 2022, all three youngsters moved to Lambrook, a delightful but low-key day and boarding school in Berkshire, where George has regularly stayed overnight in preparation for Eton.

He is said to be a hugely outdoorsy, sporty boy, who has shown a talent for triathlon and sailing – and is obsessed by flying.

His time at Eton will, hopefully, be among the happiest years of his life, allow him to develop away from the spotlight and develop a tight-knit circle of friends that will support him for many decades to come.

The college was founded in 1440 as a charity feeder school to provide free education for 70 poor boys before they progressed to King’s College, Cambridge.

It has since become one of the most lauded public schools in the world, educating generations of British and foreign aristocracy and, in recent years, home-grown monarchy.

Former alumni include no less than 20 former British prime ministers, writers George Orwell, Aldous Huxley and Ian Fleming, as well as actors Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston and Damian Lewis.

Recent decades have seen a concerted effort to open up benefits of an Eton education to pupils from a more diverse background, with around 20 per cent on bursaries or scholarships.

The Good Schools Guide says it is an establishment that is chosen by people ‘despite its name, not because of it’ and insists: ‘Eton’s got normal families and normal children doing great things.’

Its fees remain, however, an eye-watering £65,000-plus a year and there is an enviable 7:1 pupil to teacher ratio.

And it is also still renowned for its traditions including the classic uniform of a black tailcoat (£165) with matching trousers (£65), waistcoat (£50) and white tunic shirt (£22).

Facilities remain first class with superlative music, drama and sports departments. As well as rugby and football, the school still boasts unique traditions such the ‘Eton wall game’.

All boarders have private rooms from their first day in one of 25 distinctive boarding houses run by the house master and dame.

Kensington Palace have broken recent tradition and chosen not to share the name of George’s house.

Teachers are known officially as masters, but colloquially as ‘beaks’.

The Waleses – who famously admit they have refused to give their children mobile phones – will no doubt be delighted with the school’s phone policy: just a Nokia brick phone for boys such as George in Year 9 with very limited use.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Reportedly Surprised by King Charles’ Letter on Royal Status

0

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were reportedly given no advance notice before King Charles III issued a letter Monday addressing their standing within the royal sphere.

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex told the BBC on Tuesday that the couple were “a little surprised to have not been told about this” ahead of the letter’s release.

According to the report, the Sussexes’ team received the correspondence shortly before 2 p.m. UK time. In it, Harry and Meghan were described as “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”

Harry was then contacted at 3:09 p.m. and informed that his representatives had replied to the King’s letter with follow-up questions. Just two minutes later, the letter was circulated more widely.

A representative for Harry and Markle did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

Charles’ letter confirmed the duo, who recently relocated to the United Kingdom after six years away, will not be working royals carrying out official engagements.

“It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of the Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of the Royal Family,” the announcement, sent to the BBC on behalf of Charles by the family’s lord chamberlain, read.

“There is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” it continued. Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used.”

Charles, 77, issued the letter “to help avoid doubt or confusion.”

This is a developing story…

Iran-Backed Hezbollah Faces Growing Pressure in Lebanon

0

Israel’s capture on Sunday of the strategically important Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, long viewed as a key Hezbollah and Iranian stronghold, marked a significant setback for Tehran’s so-called “Axis of Resistance.”

The Israel Defense Forces’ gain does not amount to a decisive defeat for Hezbollah, but it strips the Iranian-backed terrorist organization of one of its most important forward positions for planning a potential invasion of Israel.

IDF Lt. Col. (Res.) Sarit Zehavi, founder and president of the Israel-based Alma Research and Education Center, told News Media that Israel has spent years steadily weakening Hezbollah’s military capabilities. “In the past three years Israel has attacked Hezbollah against various areas, for instance, we degraded the amount of rockets and missiles,” she said.

According to Zehavi, the IDF has destroyed or neutralized roughly 90% of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile stockpile. “Today Hezbollah is holding between 10,000 to 15,000 rockets, which is much less than what it used to have. Most of the array of sophisticated missiles, accurate missiles and long-range missiles was either eliminated or neutralized,” she said.

She said, “The capability to launch an invasion of thousands of terrorists into Israel which was the plan, and this was the preparedness three years ago. This capability doesn’t exist anymore since the IDF is based in South Lebanon along the borderline, preventing Hezbollah from coming back to those places.”

In late August, Alma released a widely read analysis on: “Hezbollah – Situation Assessment: From a Large-Scale Terrorist Army to a Persistent Dispersed Threat.”

Israeli strikes in Lebanon

Zehavi, who resides in northern Israel and has experienced Hezbollah’s massive aerial attacks into her region since the Lebanese terrorist movement joined Hamas in its war against Israel, warned that, “As long as Iran supports its main proxy, which is Hezbollah, it will be very difficult to prevent its rebuilding of its military capabilities and with everything that happened in Iran In the past year, Iran still supports Hezbollah.”

She noted that Iran still aids Hezbollah via “arms smuggling and money” and “they still put a lot of effort [into] that and the training and the involvement of Iran in Hezbollah in Lebanon. And this must be stopped.”

Iran’s regime is a state-sponsor of terrorism and Hezbollah’s base is the Shiite community in Lebanon. Radical Shiite Islamism unifies Iran’s regime with its chief proxy, Hezbollah, in Lebanon.

Alma, who has a deep knowledge of Hezbollah’s activities, wrote on X on Sunday: “The battle for the Ali al-Taher Ridge is over – the struggle with Hezbollah is not.”

According to Zehavi, Hezbollah “today is much more of a guerrilla organization than a terrorist army as it used to be. It is having a lot of difficulties in rebuilding its capabilities… It is dedicated to rebuilding its military capabilities. But it has a lot of challenges along the way with this regard because of the regime change in Syria, because of that fact that it’s much more difficult to transfer weapons through the airport in Lebanon and through Syria. But it doesn’t mean that it is not happening. They are still trying and some of it do pass.”

Hezbollah’s setback was also echoed by Israel TV’s Channel 12 chief political analyst, Amit Segal. He said the Hezbollah base Ali al-Taher was “Just 10 kilometers (just over six miles) from the Israeli border, with a clear view of the Litani and the Israeli Hula Valley, it was the place from which Hezbollah intended to coordinate its own Oct. 7 in the Galilee.”

Hezbollah’s ally, the Hamas terrorist organization, invaded Israel nearly three years ago on Oct. 7 and slaughtered over 1,200 people in southern Israel, including more than 40 Americans.

The IDF announced on Sunday that “Soldiers from the 36th Division have operated in recent weeks to clear and neutralize the two underground routes in the Ali al-Taher Ridge area in the Security Zone. The soldiers achieved operational control of the ridge area, both above and below ground, and cleared the area of terrorists. Some of the terrorists were eliminated, while others fled the area.”

The IDF statement added that “Following operations in the underground routes over the past several weeks, their capability to carry out terror attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers from within the routes has been neutralized.”

Hezbollah official Mahmoud Qamati told a Lebanese podcaster in late August that, “Ali al-Taher is important, but if it is lost it does not mean the end of Hezbollah.”

Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri told an Arab TV station, also in late August, that the Lebanese army was ready to take over the strategic ridge.

He accused Israel of blocking the army due to its own political considerations ahead of Israeli national elections on Oct. 27.

“The problem is not in the Lebanese army’s readiness but in Israel’s stance,” he said.

The Trump administration had pushed for Hezbollah to allow Lebanon’s Army to take control of Ali al-Taher. Hezbollah refused the proposed U.S. deal.

A State Department spokesperson told News Media that “Hizballah has been the primary obstacle to Lebanon’s economic recovery, the main blemish on its international reputation, and the biggest threat to the safety and stability of Lebanon. It bears sole responsibility for Israel’s presence on Lebanese soil. This is precisely why Hizballah must be disarmed and dismantled.”

The State Department spokesperson added that “Hizballah is drastically weaker than at any point in recent history, which has allowed the Government of Lebanon to outlaw its military activities. We fully support that decision, as do all of our regional partners.”

Hanin Ghaddar, a senior fellow at The Washington Institute who focuses on Shia politics throughout the Levant, told News Media that “Hezbollah is weakened on two levels. They lost a lot of people, commanders and people, and weapons. Today, there is a goal to rebuild this military structure, invest in rebuilding in personnel, infrastructure and weapons. This is their primary goal.”

Ghaddar, who is from Lebanon, added the second level of weakness for Hezbollah is the people are divided within the Shiite community. Hezbollah is no longer the father figure. Hezbollah ended with [Hassan] Nasrallah with his assassination. Hezbollah as protector and liberator is no longer there. It is a mix of IRGC [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps], Hezbollah and Nabih Berri [ the Shiite speaker of the Lebanese parliament and the president of the Amal movement].”

Hezbollah

Ghaddar said the Shiite community in Lebanon is fractured over whether to continue its support for Hezbollah after multiple wars with Israel.  She said it’s “divided over whether Hezbollah is the solution. There is where Hezbollah is bleeding. Hezbollah needs the Shiite community for political power.”

Ghaddar said that “Hezbollah has managed to get appointments through their allies, Berri and Amal… They have ministries of finance and health ministry… They really wanted appointments in general security and military. They got that. This reflects their strength economically. They are in survival and using power in the state and cash economy to rebuild.”

Multiple News Media press queries sent to the Lebanese Embassy in Washington, D.C., went unanswered.

RNLI Lifeboat With 140 Migrants Turned Away From Two Ports

Two RNLI lifeboats transporting 140 migrants who had crossed the Channel were reportedly turned away from two major ports before eventually landing near Portsmouth, where a large crowd of masked demonstrators was waiting.

The arrivals at Eastney Landing on Sunday sparked a tense confrontation involving more than 500 men wearing balaclavas, during which police officers were hurt and vehicles were damaged.

Portsmouth City Council’s leader has strongly condemned the handling of the situation, arguing that the decision created “needless disruption” and “put lives at risk”.

New details suggest the crews aboard the two RNLI lifeboats had been told not to dock at either Southampton Port or Portsmouth Harbour, with warnings that legal action could follow if they entered.

An exchange heard on open marine VHF radio indicated that Southampton Vessel Traffic Service and the King’s Harbour Master Portsmouth refused the RNLI permission to access the ports or even their approaches.

They were told that failure to comply with the order could result in criminal prosecution.

The crews of the Bembridge and Yarmouth lifeboats decided to sail several miles further along the coast and dock instead at Eastney, where the confrontation later unfolded.

Large crowds blocked traffic along the road leading away from the port, with photos showing police carrying riot shields as they confronted the black-clad mob.

Hampshire Police Federation claimed two officers were pushed off motorbikes, while others had bricks thrown at them. The chaos came a day after masked anti-migrant protesters blocked traffic at the Port of Dover.

The landing sparked protests which saw demonstrators clash with riot police until they were dispersed in the early hours of Monday

Associated British Ports (ABP) confirmed that the RNLI lifeboats carrying the migrants were told not to come to Southampton on Sunday night.

‘ABP did receive an enquiry about landing recovered migrants at the Port of Southampton,’ a spokesman said.

‘We had to decline the enquiry as the port did not have suitable reception facilities available.

‘If there had been a safety-of-life-at-sea issue where Southampton was the closest port, or if we had received a formal direction from the authorities, then we would have played a role. Neither was the case in this situation.’

The King’s Harbour Master Portsmouth has been approached for comment.

The migrant ‘mega-dinghy’ had travelled about 70 miles from the Normandy coast, becoming the first migrant boat known to have completed such a lengthy crossing. Its route was far removed from the usual transit point between Calais and Dover.

The decision to land the migrants in Portsmouth has sparked a major row, with Portsmouth City Council leader Steve Pitt accusing the Home Office of ‘poor judgment’.

He said: ‘The Government needs to take more action to prevent small boat crossings. Clearly people are not happy with the situation and we respect everyone’s right to protest, but it should be done peacefully and within the law.

‘We are pleased the coaches were eventually able to leave Portsmouth early this morning to take people outside Hampshire for processing in the normal way.

‘The council wasn’t asked about the decision to land the lifeboats in Portsmouth. This was entirely a decision taken by UK Border Force, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Home Office.

‘It was a completely unsuitable location to bring the boats ashore. This entire situation was avoidable and has brought needless disruption to our city. I would like to thank the emergency services for their professionalism under very challenging circumstances.

‘However, the Home Office has some serious questions to answer about its lack of planning, inconsistent decision-making and, ultimately, poor judgment. It put people at risk. This cannot happen again.’

Hard-Right organisation Patriot Platform – run by convicted attempted kidnapper Daniel Thomas – claimed responsibility for the demonstrations in Portsmouth and Dover.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has called for a ban on face coverings worn by extremists on both the left and right, describing them as a ‘menace’ designed to bully and intimidate. He insisted the ban should include all full-face coverings, including burkas.

There are now fears more dinghies will make the long-distance sea voyage from Normandy as smugglers evolve their tactics.

A senior French interior ministry source told the Daily Mail: ‘The geographical focus of the people smugglers is definitely changing.

‘They are finding it much harder to get boats launched in the Pas-de-Calais and so are moving west to Normandy.

‘We expect far more of the mega-dinghies to appear here in the coming weeks and months.

‘The success on Sunday proved the voyage can be done.’

The Home Office confirmed 625 migrants reached Britain on Sunday, the highest daily total since July 29.

A further, as-yet-unconfirmed number, thought to be about 130, arrived in the early hours of Monday.

Occupants of the Portsmouth dinghy, including 20 women and eight ‘very young children’, refused rescue after their outboard motor broke down, according to French officials.

The 46ft mega-dinghy left an isolated beach near Jobourg, Normandy, in the ‘very early hours’ of Sunday morning, a senior search-and-rescue official said.

‘Jobourg is not patrolled by police because nobody would expect a boat to leave from such an isolated, rocky spot,’ the source said.

‘Within an hour or so, the boat was in serious difficulty and passengers on board made Mayday calls on their mobile phones.’

Its outboard motor failed, leaving the dinghy drifting dangerously 14 miles off the French coast.

‘We asked them who wanted to be rescued, and the answer was no one,’ said the source.

‘Only a few migrants were wearing life jackets, so we handed out jackets to all of them. It seemed incomprehensible that they were risking their lives without life jackets.

‘A second outboard motor was made to work, allowing the boat to continue its voyage to Britain.’

Five French rescue boats and two helicopters were involved in an operation that monitored and supported the dinghy’s 14-hour crossing.

A spokesman for the Maritime Prefecture for the English Channel and the North Sea said migrants were not transferred to rescue vessels due to concerns over the ‘structural fragility’ of their dinghy.

The crossing was later monitored by British authorities, including a Coastguard aircraft and RNLI lifeboats, before the vessel was escorted into Eastney Marina, three miles from Portsmouth’s main harbour.

A Home Office spokesman said: ‘We condemn the intimidating and thuggish behaviour we saw in Portsmouth last night.

‘The right to peaceful protest is fundamental to our democracy, but it must never cross the line into disorder.

‘We thank the emergency services who safely managed this situation.

‘This Government is doing the hard and necessary work of bearing down on small boat crossings, with the lowest number of arrivals between June and August since 2020.’

The RNLI helped more than 36,000 people across its lifeboat and lifeguard services last year, with crews launching more than 9,000 times to assist those in distress at sea.

RNLI lifeboat crews insist they have a duty to rescue anyone at sea, regardless of who they are.

Heartbroken Fiancée of Mr UK Slams Humiliating Ordeal

A British nurse has broken her silence after learning that her fiancé had met another woman while on a cruise in Australia — a holiday romance saga that later went viral online and, she says, left her devastated.

Natalie Green had been eagerly counting down the days until her partner of eight years, 41-year-old Liam McAuley, returned home in August following a visit to Australia to spend time with relatives.

Just three weeks earlier, she had seen him off at the airport with a goodbye kiss. During his time away, the couple stayed in daily contact, with McAuley sharing updates from his trip Down Under — including details of a nine-day Whitsundays cruise he took with his mother.

But the mother-of-one said she was blindsided when she came across videos posted by an Australian woman, who claimed she had fallen for McAuley during a fast-moving cruise ship romance.

‘I’m hurt, angry and absolutely heartbroken to say the least,’ Ms Green wrote in a post on social media.

‘He didn’t even have the respect to come home and talk to me face to face.’

Ms Green only found out about Mr McAuley’s holiday fling after Sydney business owner Sammi, 44, started posting about her dating life on board a cruise holiday she had taken with her son Jett.

Sammi had sworn off men for 14 years after Jett had been diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer, but when she met a handsome stranger at the ship’s nightclub she was smitten.

Dubbing him ‘Mr UK’, Sammi claimed he was the man of her dreams. She said she was overjoyed when he cancelled his flight home to spend another week with her after the ship docked.

But unknown to her, Mr McAuley was already in a long-term relationship and told his fiancée he had been offered a job in the mines and would be staying another week.

At the same time, Sammi’s videos began going viral, with thousands of people from across the globe waiting for the next instalment on their long distance love story.

It was then that Ms Green and her sister Aimee were sent a link to a video montage featuring Mr McAuley in a series of loved up snaps with Sammi.

‘My sister is absolutely shattered into a thousand pieces, her heart is completely ripped out to see this,’ said Aimee.

She said she’d ‘never really taken’ to Mr McAuley, but added: ‘You tolerate someone for someone you love. Everyone tolerates him.

‘But my sister is the salt of the earth type and she is so kind-hearted and pure.’

The sisters began leaving comments on Sammi’s videos warning her that Mr McAuley was already engaged

Back in Australia, Sammi read everything and immediately confronted him.

‘I woke Liam up and at first, he denied it but then he told me it was true but complicated,’ she said. ‘I told him to pack his things and go.

‘He was already leaving that day anyway so I drove him to the train station in silence. He kissed me and said, ‘I have never loved anyone as much as I loved you’ and he left.

‘My heart wanted it to work but my brain knew it couldn’t.

‘He is gone now and I have been humiliated online and people think I knew – or at least feel I should have seen the warning signs, but there weren’t any.’

Ms Green has since posted a selfie to TikTok insisting she is ready to move on.

‘Life goes on,’ she wrote. ‘Have I been hurt, cheated and lied to? Yes. I’ve cried, I’ve raged, I’ve hit the bottom.

‘But will I let this get the better of me? Absolutely not. One day at a time but I have got this.’

Mr McAuley, now back in the UK, told the Daily Mail he had handled the situation badly but he still believes they can make it work.

‘Sammi knows how sorry I am for how it all ended and we both know what we feel is real,’ he said. ‘It will take some work to get back to where we were.

‘I’m also sorry for hurting [my fiancée], even if in my head it had been over for a while but the way I have been portrayed by her family and friends is downright vindictive.

‘Sammi changed my view on what happiness can be like and I have to live with the fact I ruined it. I’m not sure what the future holds but I’m along for the ride.’

Sammi has now said she was ready to move on in a tearful post and told followers the relationship was over.

She apologised to Ms Green and said Mr McAuley had done ‘a bad thing’ but was not ‘a bad person’.

Sammi said she was aware of the criticism she has had since going public and added: ‘I’m well aware of the things that are circulating about me.

‘But I started my page a year ago in the hope of inspiring woman who were going through what I was going through, to be able to pick up and just keep moving.’

Mamdani’s Biggest NYC Schools Challenge: Getting Kids to Class

0

New York City students head back to class this week — at least in theory. In practice, roughly one-third are expected to miss 10% or more of the school year.

That level of chronic absenteeism remains one of the clearest barriers to academic recovery and long-term student success.

The city Department of Education could offer a stronger curriculum, hire exceptional teachers and pour unlimited funding into classrooms, but none of it matters if children are not in their seats consistently enough to learn.

Against that backdrop, it is hardly surprising that about half of students are not on track to end the year reading at grade level.

Chronic absenteeism surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, and despite the return to normal school routines, the problem has remained alarmingly persistent.

In the 2018-19 academic year it stood at 26.5%, only to spike to 34.8% five years later.

The bad habits start young: 37.8% of kindergarteners were chronically absent in the 2024-25 school year.

A robust body of research correlates absenteeism, especially in early grades, with negative outcomes in school and later in life, including poorer standardized test scores and greater likelihood of drug use and criminal-justice involvement.

Unexcused absences, which make up the largest share of overall absenteeism, have the biggest impact on academic performance.

High rates of absenteeism can disrupt classroom instruction and make it harder for peers with consistent attendance to learn.

Asking taxpayers to spend record sums on public education, only to have a third of students miss large chunks of the school year, is the ultimate indictment of the poor value proposition city schools offer.

The DOE will spend more than $42,000 on each student, yet even those who attend will spend 130 fewer hours in classrooms than the national average.

This dysfunction is one reason why so many families are opting out of the system.

K-12 enrollment in New York City public schools has plummeted by over a tenth since 2020, or over 100,000 students.

Many families enroll in pre-K, only to flee before kindergarten: 52,400 children applied for pre-K seats in 2024–25, but only 46,370 later applied for kindergarten.

The School Construction Authority predicts the system will lose another 150,000 students over the next 10 years.

Charter schools, meanwhile, continue to grow, with five new schools opening this year.

The charters enroll an estimated 152,000 students, representing 16% of the entire pupil population.

What accounts for the difference?

For one thing, charter leaders are laser focused on attendance.

They emphasize its importance with parents, track attendance carefully and contact families promptly when students miss class.

Charters encourage punctuality directly, too: Students with perfect attendance receive special awards, and those who arrive at school consistently late incur penalties.

When charter students log too many absences, administrators have the flexibility to address it; they can require teachers to spend time addressing underlying issues with families.

That’s possible because charter teachers are not unionized, and not bound by strict timetables set in the DOE contract.

Nonetheless, reducing chronic absenteeism should be a top priority of Chancellor Kamar Samuels and district superintendents.

It will be impossible to raise achievement levels if students aren’t in school consistently.

This is not a new problem, but in years past elected officials made attendance a priority.

Mayor Mike Bloomberg launched a multi-year crusade in 2010 to reduce chronic absenteeism.

The effort included multimedia advertising, pairing troubled kids with “success mentors” and even automated phone calls from celebrities urging students to show up for school.

Out of the 100 schools that participated in Bloomberg’s programs, 58 saw reductions in chronic absenteeism.

The fact that school leaders and public officials have not treated the post-pandemic spike as an emergency underscores how DOE has declined — even as per-pupil spending has soared well beyond Bloomberg-era levels.

But there are some bright spots.

DOE is now mandating each school to designate a staff member who will be trained to act as an absenteeism “avoidance liaison.”

It’s a good first step.

These staffers should offer a mix of supports to ensure that families bring students to school regularly — as well as consequences for those who exceed a certain number of unexcused absences.

Samuels must next target high-risk students with an early-warning system to flag unexcused absences and intervene quickly.

Absenteeism is a problem in urban districts nationwide: Detroit, for one, is experimenting with cash-incentive rewards for students who show up.

Reasonable minds can differ on this approach, but at least city leaders are taking the issue seriously enough to try unconventional solutions.

New York should likewise embrace innovation.

Finally, we need better data: New York, both city and state, drags its feet on releasing attendance data.

That leaves local researchers stuck with numbers from the 2024-25 school year — even as states like Connecticut and Rhode Island update public attendance dashboards monthly.

The first step toward fixing New York City’s schools is getting students back into them.

Andy Cohen on Lisa’s RHUGT Snub, Nene’s RHOA Return

Andy Cohen Talks LVP Turning Down RHUGT Cameo, Nene Leakes’ Potential RHOA Return, and Montana Housewives Rumor, Plus Why Carole Was Upgraded to Full-Time and Who Brought the Most Drama to RHONY Season 16

Andy Cohen shared over the weekend that Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Lisa Vanderpump declined an invitation to appear on Real Housewives Ultimate Girls: Roaring 20th.

During the same interview, Andy, 58, also weighed in on the possibility of Nene Leakes returning to The Real Housewives of Atlanta, addressed rumors about a potential Real Housewives of Montana, and explained why Carole Radziwill, 63, was bumped up to a full-time position on The Real Housewives of New York City. He also revealed which RHONY cast member stirred up the most drama in season 16, named the celebrity who has turned down Watch What Happens Live more than anyone else, and touched on several other Bravo hot topics.

“We wanted [Lisa Vanderpump] to come back for [RHUGT] just to make an appearance, and she said, ‘No,’ I think cuz she can’t stand [Kyle Richards] and [Dorit Kemsley], but that’s just me guessing,” Andy said in a September 5 interview with Entertainment Tonight.

As for Nene, 58, Andy seemingly shut down the idea of her going back to RHOA.

“We just finished the reunion, and the cast is so great. We have eight housewives right now, so it seems like we have a pretty stacked lineup. But I loved her return to [RHUGT],” he clarified. “The fans were so excited, and I was just as excited as the fans, because I’m a fan.”

Moving on to a possible Real Housewives installment based out of Montana, Andy suggested that Bravo was not involved.

“There’s so many production companies that try to cast housewives and then pitch it to Bravo. So, some of them we’re involved with, and some of them we’re not,” he explained.

Regarding Carole’s upgraded role, Andy shared that he took her to breakfast after realizing that a “friend of” role wasn’t going to cut it.

“She was doing so well and she was such a part of the group that we said, ‘We need to have her as full housewife.’ So I took her out for another breakfast, and I said, ‘Guess what? We want you to hold an apple,’” he revealed.

While there has been some criticism of RHONY in recent years, following the cast overhaul ahead of season 14, Andy confirmed that he and his team have “nailed” season 16.

“It took a while and we didn’t want to relaunch the show until we got the casting exactly right, and I have to say, with Carole, [Daisy Toye], [Erika Hammond], and [Hailey Glassman] joining the group, we have nailed this casting. The new housewives come out with a bang. They’re so memorable,” he vowed. “Daisy, Hailey, and Erika, I mean, the three of them are going for the crown.”

As for who brought the most drama, that went to Daisy.

“Daisy brings a lot of drama. She’s just very outspoken, and I think one of the reasons people have always loved [RHONY] is how funny it is and how shocking and how absolutely, kind of the drama self-generates. And this season absolutely delivers on all of those parts,” he teased.

Then, after naming Mary Cosby, 53, as the funniest housewife and admitting there are “a few” cast members he dreads getting calls from, Andy named which celebrities are the biggest Housewives fans.

“Julia Roberts is pretty engaged. We had dinner a couple weeks ago and let me just say this: She does a mean Vicki Gunvalson. She’s an Oscar winner, after all. [Jon Hamm] is the best. He just watched all of [Real Housewives of Rhode Island]. He loved it. I think [Alicia Carmody] [is his favorite],” Andy shared.

Also during the interview, Andy said it was Madonna who most frequently turned down WWHL.
