Swimmer Hospitalized in Suspected Martha’s Vineyard Shark Attack

0

A swimmer on Martha’s Vineyard was taken to a hospital Monday after suffering injuries that officials said appeared consistent with a possible shark bite.

The reported encounter occurred Monday afternoon at South Beach in Edgartown, Massachusetts, a heavily visited stretch of coastline on the island.

According to local officials, the woman, who is in her late 20s, was swimming when she sustained an injury to her lower leg.

“Based upon the nature of the injuries, however, the wounds were considered consistent with a potential shark bite,” Town Administrator James Hagerty said in a statement.

Her injuries were considered non-life-threatening and “did not involve the loss of a limb or other life-threatening trauma,” Hagerty said.

Multiple Edgartown agencies responded to the scene, where the woman received initial medical treatment before being transported to a local hospital for further care.

Following the suspected shark encounter, no marine predators were observed or confirmed in connection with the incident, officials said.

In accordance with town protocol, officials suspended swimming at South Beach for several hours as a precaution, allowing personnel to assess conditions before later lifting the water restrictions.

The town thanked emergency personnel and beach staff for their prompt response.

“Beachgoers are reminded to remain aware of their surroundings while in the water and to comply with instructions from lifeguards and any posted beach advisories,” Hagerty said.

Confirmed shark attacks at Martha’s Vineyard have historically been rare, though marine predators are known to pass through the area.

Nearly all serious or fatal shark attacks in Massachusetts over the last two decades have occurred along the coast of nearby Cape Cod, which is two hours away by car.

Cape Cod is considered a major hotspot for great white sharks in the North Atlantic due to its large population of gray seals, a primary food source for the predators.

Over 55? Holding These 3 Yoga Poses Signals Better-Than-Average Balance

0

Balance is easy to take for granted—until it begins to feel less reliable. For many adults, that shift becomes more noticeable after age 50. A quick at-home balance test can be a useful wake-up call, showing your current ability and giving you a clear benchmark to build from.

The encouraging part is that balance can improve with consistent practice, no matter your age. As a personal trainer with nearly four decades of experience, including more than 25 years as director and co-founder of TRAINFITNESS, one of the UK’s leading providers of in-person and online personal training courses, I often use simple yoga-based movements to assess stability. These three yoga poses create a step-by-step balance challenge, moving from the easiest option to the most demanding, while helping you understand what your results may say about your fitness and body control.

Once you pass 50, the body’s balance systems can begin to change in several ways. Muscle mass naturally decreases, particularly through the legs, feet, and ankles. At the same time, proprioceptors—the tiny sensors in your joints that help your brain track body position—may not respond as sharply. Reaction speed can also dip, while the vestibular system in the inner ear, which plays a major role in balance and spatial awareness, can become slightly less accurate.

That is why checking your balance is so valuable. Like strength or flexibility, balance is a skill that fades when it is not used. Without a baseline, it is difficult to know what kind of training you actually need. Yoga poses are ideal for this kind of balance assessment because they are simple, equipment-free, and easy to scale from beginner-friendly to more advanced, giving you a more precise picture than simply assuming your stability is “good enough.”

It is important to be clear: this is a self-assessment, not a medical evaluation. If you experience dizziness, have a history of falls, deal with inner-ear issues, or feel unsteady, use a wall, chair, or other support while trying the poses—and consider speaking with a healthcare or fitness professional before starting.

Tropical Storm Edouard Hits US as Millions Brace for Impact

0

A potent tropical storm roared ashore along the US Gulf Coast on Tuesday, bringing a fast-escalating threat of flooding, damaging winds and hazardous travel.

Tropical Storm Edouard made landfall near Johnson Bayou, Louisiana, shortly after 3pm ET, just east of the Texas border. A wind gust of 71mph was recorded nearby at Texas Point as the storm pushed inland.

Although Edouard packed considerable strength, its wind field was among the smallest ever documented for an Atlantic tropical system, helping limit the overall reach of its damage. Still, millions across the region are facing a dangerous stretch marked by flooded roads, disrupted travel, power outages and the risk of tornadoes.

Forecasters warned that storm surge could raise water levels as much as eight feet in the most vulnerable coastal areas near Port Arthur, Texas, and along the Louisiana border.

At the same time, training bands of thunderstorms may drop up to 20 inches of rain in isolated spots by Wednesday, threatening to overwhelm drainage systems and leave some low-lying communities cut off.

A tropical storm warning stretches from Port Bolivar, Texas to the Vermilion-Cameron Parish line in Louisiana, while a storm surge warning covers the coast from High Island to Cameron.

The bulk of the heaviest rain and strongest gusts is forecast to pass east of the Houston metro, although the city and its surrounding communities could still experience downpours and dangerous travel.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that Edouard should weaken as it moves farther inland, but its flooding and tornado threat could persist for hours after landfall.

Tropical Storm Edouard is slamming into the US Gulf Coast, unleashing torrential rain as officials warn of flooding, tornadoes and a dangerous storm surge

A surge of three to six feet is forecast across much of that area, while AccuWeather warned that water could reach a Local StormMax of eight feet in isolated locations.

Farther east along the Louisiana coast, forecasters expect a lower, but still potentially dangerous, surge of one to three feet.

Storm surge occurs when powerful winds push seawater inland, raising water levels along the coast and flooding roads, homes and businesses.

The threat becomes particularly dangerous around bays, rivers and other waterways where rising water can move well beyond the immediate shoreline.

Edouard’s heavy rain could prove even more disruptive because the storm is moving slowly, allowing bands of thunderstorms to pass repeatedly over the same communities.

A broad area of one to two inches of rain is forecast along the Louisiana coast and into eastern Texas through Wednesday.

However, totals of two to eight inches are expected across the upper Texas coast, with a smaller corridor east of Houston potentially receiving eight to 12 inches.

AccuWeather said the highest isolated total could reach 20 inches where thunderstorms repeatedly track over the same location.

The strengthening system began making landfall in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, on Tuesday just after 2pm ET and is forecast to push into southeastern Texas by the evening

How should communities balance the need to prepare for extreme weather with the costs and disruptions these storms bring?

Even areas receiving far less rain could experience street flooding because intense downpours can overwhelm storm drains within minutes.

Water may rapidly collect on roads and in underpasses, creating dangerous conditions for motorists and potentially disrupting Tuesday’s evening commute.

Drivers could encounter sharply reduced visibility, stranded vehicles and roads that appear passable before suddenly becoming submerged.

Gusty winds are also capable of bringing down tree limbs and causing sporadic power outages, although damaging winds are not expected to be as widespread as they would be during a major hurricane.

Forecasters are additionally warning of waterspouts and isolated tornadoes, particularly within Edouard’s eastern and northeastern bands.

That danger may continue for several hours after the storm’s center has crossed the coast.

Edouard marks the third time this hurricane season that the region has faced direct tropical impacts.

Tropical Storm Arthur struck Texas in June, followed by Tropical Storm Bertha’s Louisiana landfall in July.

Some rain will benefit areas experiencing abnormally dry or drought conditions, but the most intense bands could deliver too much water too quickly.

Although Edouard will steadily lose strength over land, forecasters warned that residents should not assume the danger ends at landfall.

Floodwater, coastal inundation and tornadoes can remain deadly even after the storm’s winds begin to weaken.

Met Leaders Admit Mistake in John Galliano Controversy

0

Senior leaders at the Metropolitan Museum of Art conceded to angry high-dollar donors that the institution had erred in choosing designer John Galliano, who was convicted over antisemitic abuse, for a major honor, sources said.

In a hastily arranged Zoom call late Monday afternoon with the museum’s influential board of trustees, Met CEO Max Hollein and billionaire board co-chair Tony James acknowledged concerns that the institution failed to gather sufficient input before moving forward with the polarizing selection, people familiar with the meeting told The Post.

“They admitted it was a mistake,” one source said of the hourlong discussion, which came just hours after Galliano, 65, announced he was stepping away from being honored at May’s star-packed Met Gala and from a related curated costume exhibition. The celebrated couture figure has long faced backlash for a past outburst in which he declared, “I love Hitler.”

According to the source, museum officials discussed how the decision-making process had broken down and acknowledged that the final choice was misguided.

James, sources said, personally conceded that Galliano was the wrong honoree at the wrong moment, particularly amid heightened alarm over rising antisemitism.

New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, an ex officio trustee who helped drive mounting protest against Galliano’s selection, spoke during the meeting and reiterated that honoring the onetime catwalk virtuoso was a bad move, sources said.

But while copping to botching the 2027 mega-fund-raising gala, Met execs and some trustees still refused to take on 76-year-old Vogue editrix Anna Wintour — and even her flamboyant buddy Galliano.

“People were complimentary of Anna,” a source said — adding that Met leadership was grateful that Galliano bowed out on his own.

Wintour, the ironfisted power behind the gala, has remained loyal to the eccentric Galliano, helping him to continue his fantastical work in the fashion field since his fall from grace.

Around 2011, Galliano was the star of legendary fashion house Dior when he was caught on camera hissing horrific anti-Jewish vitriol at various patrons of a cafe in Paris.

He blamed being booze- and drug-addled at the time, copped a mea culpa, entered rehab — and then seemed to make nice with some key Jewish national leaders.

But a fashion publicist recently recounted how she and a friend had an antisemitic encounter with Galliano years later, in 2019, in which he sneered over her pal speaking in Hebrew. Galliano has denied the encounter ever happened.

Wintour has stood by the disgraced designer through it all, even calling his decision to step down from his Met fete “courageous.’’

No decision was made about a replacement “theme’’ for the gala or exhibit, Met officials noted at the meeting, sources said.

But there also was heightened discussion and soul-searching about the Met’s values overall, sources said.

“I felt that it was a two-part problem,’’ said Met donor Alice Tisch, referring to Galliano’s selection, to The Post on Monday after his sensational bow-out.

“It was the Jewish problem — which is so, you know, heightened right now with all of the issues and all of the antisemitism,” said Tisch, who is not a trustee.

“But as much as that, it was the governance issue that just bespeaks a larger problem and something that should not be,” she said.

“You can’t have one donor to the museum, whether they’re a trustee or not, saying ‘We’re going to do this show, this is an artist we need to promote,’” said Tisch, a relative of NYPD Commish Jessica Tisch. “It’s got to come from curatorial. There’s got to be church and state. This stuff has to be a little separate.

“I did enough research into it,’’ she said. “I was thinking, it’s got to be that at least 50 percent of the donors to the Met are Jews — you know, historic big collections.

“There’s the Lehman collection, the Gelman collection, the Annenberg collection. There’s a lot of great Jewish collections there.

“So they’re also running a Lee Krasner and a Jackson Pollock show at the same time. And that’s when I started to think, what would Lee Krasner do? What would one of these Jewish artists’ responses be to the Met for showing this art?”

Police Intervene After Residents Confront Travellers at Wildlife Haven

0

Police have been called in to keep the peace at a Hertfordshire wildlife haven after protesters confronted travellers accused of tearing up the site during a bank holiday land grab.

Hundreds of angry residents descended on the field in Sawbridgeworth to voice their fury over work that began on August 29, sparking a major local backlash.

Determined to stop any further disruption, furious locals set up an overnight protest camp on the land, which lies near Sir Rod Stewart’s sprawling Grade II-listed 18th-century mansion, Durrington House.

Their protest appeared to pay off on Monday, when workers at the encampment left the field following visits from police and council officials.

East Hertfordshire District Council ordered the work, which involved diggers and bulldozers, to stop that evening, and an injunction has since temporarily halted any further development on the site.

Officers remain on the site which is surrounded by fencing, contains a static home and four heavy-duty diggers.

Aerial pictures of the site, taken over the bank holiday weekend, show a concrete surface had been laid as well as fences used to create five plots.

Two caravans were parked at the wildlife spot where muntjac deer are said to roam, despite the temporary injunction prohibiting any further work or occupying of the lot.

Labour MP for Hertford and Stortford, Josh Dean said he was ‘appalled by the flagrant disregard for the rules and the damage that has been done to our environment.

‘The law needs to change to ensure that local authorities have the powers they need to bring this kind of activity to a swift end,’ he said.

Hertfordshire Constabulary previously told the Daily Mail that officers entered the site this morning and ‘all those who had unauthorised access, left the site peacefully’.

A spokesperson for the force said: ‘This was following an amended High Court injunction, which was granted and served this morning.

‘The High Court injunction meant that anyone found carrying out activities prohibited by the injunction – including bringing caravans on site and occupying the land for carrying out development – could be arrested by the police. No arrests were necessary.’

A council spokesperson said: ‘Early on Saturday… we became aware of works taking place on the land off Sheering Mill Lane, Sawbridgeworth, following reports from local residents.

‘Heavy vehicles and construction equipment had entered the site. The land does not have planning permission for development.

‘We served a Temporary Stop Notice shortly after 10.45am on Saturday 29 August. We also made an urgent application to the High Court for an injunction.

‘Our priority is to prevent the site from being occupied and to bring the unauthorised development to an end as quickly as possible.

‘We will continue to work with our partners and use the legal and enforcement options available to us to achieve this. A hearing has been scheduled for 15 September.

‘However, as works are continuing on the site, the council and its partners are doing everything possible to secure an earlier court date.’

Sawbridgeworth is the latest area to be targeted after huge lorries arrived on Friday morning with fences going up and roads being blocked.

In videos posted on social media, birds were heard chirping as work involving heavy machinery was carried out on greenbelt land.

It devastated residents who feared travellers had taken over and destroyed the precious wetland habitat and floodplain.

One neighbour, in her 50s who wished to be anonymous, has lived in the area all her life and told the Daily Mail she felt ‘powerless’ and ‘devastated’.

She said: ‘I believe they are travellers building a traveller site. Some people don’t want them anywhere, and I think they should go through all the steps that everyone else has to when it comes to planning and building.

‘They definitely don’t have permission – the order was ignored and they’ve continued to bring in diggers and all sorts of machines.’

The resident added that she and her neighbours are mostly saddened by the destroyed habitats of the protected wildlife, including bats, newts and nesting birds.

She said: ‘The reserve has been around for as long as life and within a day it was destroyed. It’s a total destruction of nature, it’s absolutely disgusting.

‘There’s a lady who lives right across the road from it and she’s in tears. We’re completely appalled by the destruction; it’s devastating to be so powerless in the situation.

‘It’s the bank holiday and no one has the chance to stop it before it’s too late, so they’ve got four days to destroy habitats’.

It follows a trend that has seen travellers purchase land, often in leafy parts of the Home Counties, and then set up unauthorised sites.

Coast Guard Rescues 37 Suspected Migrants Off California Coast

Dozens of suspected migrants were rescued from a 30-foot pleasure boat after being stranded for two days without fuel, food or water nearly 90 miles off the Southern California coast, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard officials said 37 suspected migrants were on board when rescue crews reached the vessel Friday about 88 miles from Channel Islands Harbor.

The operation got underway around 3:40 p.m. after the boat’s operator contacted the Coast Guard by radio to request assistance.

Police: Dad Left Twin Toddlers in Hot Car for Hours While He Went Dancing

0

A New Mexico father has been arrested after police said he allegedly left his twin toddlers inside a sweltering car for hours while he went dancing with a friend at an Albuquerque bar.

Stephan Natseway, 27, is facing charges of child abuse and abandonment after his 20-month-old children were discovered lethargic and drenched in sweat inside the vehicle, where authorities said they had been left for more than two hours.

Officers located the car outside The Dirty Bourbon Dance Hall & Saloon in Albuquerque after security staff spotted the two young children locked inside with no adult present, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Santa Fe New Mexican .

Police broke into the vehicle through the front driver’s-side window at about 1.30am Saturday and removed the boys from their car seats, which officers noted had not been secured to the back seats of the vehicle, the outlet reported.

Bodycam footage captured officers remarking that the toddlers were “soaked” as they pulled them from the car. The temperature in Albuquerque remained around 73 degrees after 11pm, according to the National Weather Service.

In a parked car, 73 degree air temperature can heat a vehicle up to as high as 100 degrees in just 25 minutes, climbing up to 115 degrees in an hour.

‘That’s insane. That’s disgusting,’ another officer reportedly said.

Natseway walked up and identified the car as his before he told police officers that he ‘wanted to have time to himself,’ the complaint stated.

The father claimed he tried to call family members to watch the children for the night, but no one had been available, the outlet reported.

He also said he would have left the bar earlier but wasn’t able to because others had been dancing with him, according to the complaint.

Natseway was reportedly heard in additional footage telling officers: ‘I can’t really go to jail tonight.’

Security in the bar scanned Natseway’s driver’s license just before 11pm, the outlet reported.

Natseway was accused of having ‘endangered the lives and safety of his two children by leaving them in a hot car,’ prosecutors said in a motion to have the father detained before he goes to trial.

‘They are unable to care for themselves. Security found them sweating and alone in a car for approximately 2.5 hours.

‘Even if the heat is not accounted for, the Defendant placed the children in danger so that he could go dancing. While they were alone in the car, a stranger could have kidnapped the children.’

Both Natseway and his friend told law enforcement that they knew the young boys had been left in the car, according to the complaint.

The children’s mother was previously charged with child abuse just a year prior after one of the boy’s arms was broken while in her care as she was allegedly heavily intoxicated, the outlet reported.

According to the complaint, Natseway has been reported by The Children, Youth and Families Department of New Mexico after allegedly failing to take the boy to eight follow-up appointments.

The father has also been investigated for two previous reports of neglect, but the allegations were not able to be evidenced, the outlet reported.

A spokesperson for CYFD told the Daily Mail that the boys were placed with a family member after being transported to hospital.

‘The hospital examined the children and discharged them after evaluation. Because the Indian Child Welfare Act applies here, CYFD notified the appropriate tribe or pueblo, which initially exercised jurisdiction to complete the investigation,’ spokesperson Jake Thompson said in a statement.

‘The children were released to a family member, and tribal social services completed a home visit to ensure safety. After 4.00pm Monday, the tribe notified the department that it would not be keeping jurisdiction, so CYFD will complete the investigation. CYFD was notified that the children remain with the family member.

‘Stephan agreed to accept and continue family support services the department recommended.’

Natseway was booked into the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center.

LA Hockey Star Sues Over Helmet-Piercing Puck Brain Injury

0

A Los Angeles-based hockey player suffered such severe injuries during a game that he can no longer have sex with his wife, according to claims made in a lawsuit.

Ivan Zenchencko, 32, was playing defense in a USA Hockey-sanctioned matchup at the LA Kings Valley Ice Center on September 27, 2025, when a puck allegedly broke through his helmet, court documents state.

The lawsuit says his Bauer Re-Akt 55 helmet split open on impact, allowing the puck to penetrate his head and leaving the Russian-born athlete bleeding heavily on the ice.

Footage obtained by the California Post captured spectators screaming as Zenchencko got to his feet and the seriousness of his injuries became clear.

Zenchenko, who was named to Russia’s 2026 Olympic team, was taken to Valley Presbyterian Hospital, where he was treated for lacerations and a hematoma, the suit says.

He suffered immediate memory loss and coordination of eyesight and has never been on the ice again, according to the lawsuit.

Zenchenko’s wife Sofia Zenchenko is also named as a plaintiff in the documents and says she’s suffered “loss of conjugal fellowship, sexual relations, and companionship” due to his injuries.

“To date he cannot regularly function”, the papers say. Zenchenko’s lawyer Paul Sigelman told The Post: “There are some intimacy problems. They don’t have the same sex life, Ivan is completely disabled.

The lawyer, who once represented Hollywood icon Milton Berle, added: “That’s a recognized matter in California that if you lose a sexual partner, that’s her loss and she has a right to sue for that.”

The glamorous couple is asking for a “not yet fully ascertained” amount for their suffering, but Sigelman said “it’s a multi-million dollar loss.”

The lawsuit names defendants Bauer Hockey, along with the Pure Hockey store in Anaheim, Caifornia. where Zenchenko bought the helmet on July 3, 2025, the lawsuit says.

The suit reads: “It was selected and recommended by Pure Hockey for Zenchenko’s competition use on the ice. The manufacturing defect and/or the defective design was sold without warning.”

It continues: “It is believed, and theron alleged the helmet differs from manufacturing specifications and design from other typical units of the Bauer Hockey helmet product line.”

Zenchenko has been unable to work at the exotic car rebuild company where he was employed and has suffered fright, shock, physiological impairment and traumatic brain injury, according to the suit.

Sigelman said: “He’ll be working on a car and he’ll take this piece off for whatever, and a moment later go to put it back and he has no memory of where it came from.”

Sofia has picked up work as a house keeper and is solely supporting the couple, who only speak Russian, according to Sigelman.

They have lived modestly in the San Fernando Valley after arriving in Los Angeles less than two years ago, Sigelman said.

He added: “He’s a very sweet guy. He wants to play hockey again. It was his whole life. His whole life was hockey.”

The Post reached out to Bauer Hockey and Pure Hockey for comment.

Charlie Kirk Shooting: Judge Weighs Trial for Tyler Robinson

0

PROVO, Utah — A Utah judge is set to decide Tuesday whether prosecutors have presented enough evidence to send the man accused of killing Charlie Kirk to trial on an aggravated murder charge, a count that could make him eligible for the death penalty.

The state court hearing follows a five-day presentation in July, when prosecutors laid out what they described as “overwhelming” evidence that Tyler Robinson shot and killed the conservative activist as Kirk spoke at an outdoor event on a college campus.

Robinson, 23, surrendered to authorities one day after the shooting at Utah Valley University last September. He has not entered a plea. His defense attorneys have not put forward an alternative explanation for Kirk’s death, focusing instead on efforts to stop the case from moving to trial and to remove the possibility of capital punishment.

District Judge Tony Graf could order Robinson to stand trial on the aggravated murder charge, or he could allow the case to proceed on a lesser murder count, according to Steve Burton, director of the Utah Defense Attorney Association. A murder conviction in Utah carries a minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum of life in prison. Graf also has the authority to dismiss the charges, though prosecutors would be able to file them again.

One central question in determining whether the case qualifies as aggravated murder is whether the gunfire placed other people in danger.

Attorneys will present final arguments Tuesday – closing out an unusually long preliminary – and Graf plans to announce his decision from the bench, state courts spokesperson Tania Mashburn said.

Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, and parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk, were expected back in the Provo courtroom after attending in July.

Arguments will likely focus on whether Utah County prosecutors have enough evidence to support the heightened charge of aggravated murder.

In recent court filings, defense attorneys argued that the shooter “hit the intended target” and did not endanger others. But prosecutors said numerous people were within a “zone of danger” around Kirk when he was shot from a rooftop more than 400 feet (122 meters) away.

Robinson also faces potential sentencing enhancements if prosecutors can show he targeted Kirk for his political beliefs.

Before his death, Kirk and the organization he co-founded, Turning Point USA, galvanized the conservative youth vote to help President Donald Trump win a second term.

Prosecutors have argued that an engraved bullet found in the suspected murder weapon shows that Kirk was targeted for how the defendant perceived his politics. The inscription “Hey Facist! CATCH!” is an “overt political reference,” they argued in court documents.

A handwritten note that prosecutors allege Robinson left for his romantic partner read in part, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it.” They also allege Robinson wrote in a text message about Kirk: “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”

Robinson’s attorneys have argued that prosecutors do not have strong enough evidence to prove a political motivation.

In July, investigators presented DNA analyses that they said linked Robinson to the suspected murder weapon – a bolt-action rifle with one spent round – and a tool he allegedly used to engrave the bullet cartridges.

Robinson’s reported romantic partner, Lance Twiggs, told investigators in a recorded interview that Robinson said the day after Kirk was killed that “he wishes he hadn’t done it.” Later that same day – and only about an hour before turning himself in – Robinson posted “it was me at UVU yesterday” in an online chat room, according to investigators.

Defense attorneys challenged the reliability of DNA tests and unsuccessfully fought against the public release of the Twiggs interview, warning prosecutors would characterize it as a confession. Twiggs said in the interview that he never heard Robinson talk about Kirk before the shooting.
