Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign says it has raised a record amount of money and secured high-profile liberal endorsements from figures including Jane Fonda and Bruce Springsteen as the Senate race enters its final stretch.

The progressive former public health official has become a central figure in the midterm elections after primary rival Haley Stevens shifted her support Sunday to Republican candidate Mike Rogers.

Stevens has fueled an internal Democratic clash with a series of follow-up statements criticizing El-Sayed. In response, some of the left’s most prominent donors and public figures have rallied behind the party’s nominee.

The Abdul for Senate campaign reported raising $2.4 million on Sunday—the same day Stevens appeared at a church event with Rogers and endorsed him. It was the campaign’s strongest fundraising day by a wide margin.

More than 65,000 donors contributed to El-Sayed’s campaign, giving an average of about $36 each. The total marked his best fundraising day since he won the primary in August.

“This record-breaking grassroots fundraising haul is a testament to the excitement that Abdul’s movement has inspired in the hearts of Michiganders—and a rejection of the status quo politics that’s left Michigan behind for far too long,” campaign spokesperson Cole Wozniak said.

El-Sayed also received a major celebrity endorsement following Stevens’ defection, with rock star Bruce Springsteen publicly declaring his support.

“Dr. El-Sayed is a fighter for our American Constitution, he’s a fighter for our American Democracy, and he’s a fighter against the corrupt, lawless, and anti-American leadership currently in the White House. That’s why I’m in his corner 100 percent,” Springsteen wrote on social media.

Springsteen, one of the Democratic Party’s most prominent public advocates, has a long record of endorsing candidates across the party.

Fonda announced her endorsement through her environmental political action committee, Jane Fonda Climate PAC, while also appearing to criticize Stevens.

“Unlike some people today, we are focused on taking back the Senate. Jane is proud to stand with @abdulelsayed! Let’s get money out of politics, put money back in your pocket, and pass Medicare for All,” she wrote.

Hillary Clinton, who served as the Democratic Party’s standard-bearer a decade ago, also voiced support for El-Sayed during several interviews Monday.

Speaking with CNN, Clinton said she was puzzled by Stevens’ decision and suggested it could ultimately benefit El-Sayed.

“I have no idea what her thinking was. If it has any impact, I think it will end up helping Abdul,” Clinton said.

Clinton drew on her own experience, having waged bitter primary contests against Barack Obama in 2008 and Bernie Sanders in 2016.

“Everybody who runs for office, who doesn’t make it is going to feel disappointed, maybe hurt, even a little angry. But you got to put that behind you and get together in order to beat what is a huge danger to our future. And that’s what should have happened here.”

The stunning U-turn has sparked fury across the Democratic Party, with senior lawmakers condemning Stevens, members of her staff resigning and President Donald Trump celebrating her decision.

Fellow Michigan Democrat Debbie Dingell had said Stevens assured her on Saturday night that she would not endorse Rogers.

Yet the following morning, Stevens appeared alongside the Republican at Detroit’s Perfecting Church, abandoning plans to campaign with El-Sayed.

Pressed by Anderson Cooper about what had changed overnight late Sunday, Stevens replied: ‘I woke up this morning clear-eyed, fresh and focused on what was in my heart and that’s that.’

As the interview became increasingly tense, she accused the CNN host of being upset with her.

‘You’re not really answering any of my questions, so it’s somewhat frustrating,’ Cooper responded. 

The Michigan lawmaker defended her stunning U-turn in a lengthy post on X on Monday night, accusing fellow Democrats of intolerance, criticizing their candidate El-Sayed and furiously denying claims her fiancé had influenced her decision. 

The statement, entitled ‘The Decisions We Make,’ came after the disastrous CNN interview on Sunday night in which Cooper repeatedly challenged Stevens to explain what had suddenly changed her mind.

The spectacle delighted Republicans, with President Donald Trump praising Stevens as a ‘Highly Respected Democrat’ and expressing hope she might join his party.

Her fellow Democrats were considerably less impressed.

Michigan Democratic Party chairman Curtis Hertel accused her of abandoning her principles, while Dingell described the CNN exchange as ‘one of the most painful interviews I have watched.’

Stevens’ longtime chief of staff also resigned, declaring: ‘We are shocked and heartbroken.’

Despite the condemnation, Stevens ended Monday’s statement by insisting she wanted to help rebuild the very party whose Senate candidate she had just abandoned.

‘There is healing to be done in Michigan, in our party, and in our country,’ she wrote.

‘We can build a stronger, more welcoming, more courageous Democratic Party. And I plan to help lead that effort.’

El-Sayed, 42, the Democratic nominee, who would be America’s first Muslim senator, has proved to be a lightning rod for Republicans.

President Trump has attacked him perhaps more than any other candidate, calling him a ‘jihadist,’ while Mike Rogers, 63, the Republican candidate, has tried to tie him to the Muslim Brotherhood.

El-Sayed, a former public health official, has disavowed the group and denied any connection with it. He has also faced a backlash over links to the controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. 

The race had been rated a toss-up by the influential Cook Report, which assesses that no state is giving Democrats as much ‘heartburn’ as Michigan.

However, late Monday, the site changed its rating to ‘Lean D’ as part of a prediction that saw the Democrats gaining 3-6 Senate seats.  

A 24-year-old New York City Marathon runner who collapsed near the finish line died from a rare muscle disorder, her heartbroken family said, despite describing her as being in “perfect health.”

Rachel Apa fell at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday near Mile 24 in Central Park, close to East 85th Street, as she approached the final stretch of the race.

Her father, Steve Apa, told The New York Times that the cause of death was rhabdomyolysis. The rare condition can be triggered by intense physical exertion and occurs when damaged muscles break down, releasing substances that can poison the body.

“It’s unfathomable. Perfect health, perfect shape, 24 years old,” her grieving father said. He had been following Rachel’s progress through the marathon tracking app from the family’s home in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, and realized something was wrong when her location stopped moving.

— Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is rejecting demands from the Trump administration that Kyiv stop striking Russian oil refineries, telling Fox News that Ukraine’s retaliation “must be painful.”

In an interview in Kyiv, Zelenskyy confirmed that he and his advisers have discussed attacks on Russian energy facilities with the Trump administration. President Donald Trump has blamed the strikes in part for driving up gas prices in the United States.

“We had different conversations — different, and several — with President Trump and with his team about attacks on refineries,” Zelenskyy said.

“We said that if you want us not to attack Russia’s refineries, they have not to attack our energy system.”

Ukraine says Russia has been carrying out strikes on its energy infrastructure almost daily, causing power outages as temperatures fall ahead of winter.

“That’s why we have to respond. But our response has to be painful for Russian military people,” Zelenskyy said. “If we will not respond on energy, they will continue.”

Relations between Washington and Kyiv suffered another setback in October after Trump reached an agreement to bring millions of tons of Russian diesel into the United States.

Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine could be persuaded to pause additional strikes on Russian oil facilities if the United States provided more American-made Patriot interceptor missiles to defend Ukrainian airspace. Asked by Fox News whether that amounted to an effort to pressure Trump, Zelenskyy replied: “I don’t have any concerns when I share the truth between partners.”

“Our countries are huge partners. American society (is a) huge supporter.”

“And that’s why I have to share with (the) president the truth, the real situation: that America can’t help Russia. (The) president can’t help Putin.”

With peace talks scheduled in the United Arab Emirates, Zelenskyy pressed Trump to pursue a new, limited ceasefire under which Russia and Ukraine would both stop attacking energy infrastructure.

“If the American president thinks that this war has influence on the prices,” Zelenskyy said, “he can ask, energy ceasefire, during (the) Abu Dhabi trilateral meeting: energy ceasefire.”

Zelenskyy spoke with Fox News just hours before starving and exhausted residents fled the Russian-controlled town of Oleshky and entered Ukraine under a humanitarian truce arranged by first lady Melania Trump. It was the first agreement of its kind in more than four years of war.

Zelenskyy praised the first lady’s initiative, describing the evacuations as “a huge result.” He added: “I don’t know how many such steps will be available for us, but if the First Lady can do it … it’s very helpful. I’m very thankful to her.”

Police have opened a homicide investigation following the on-pitch collision that resulted in the death of a Spanish footballer.

Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel, 30, died this morning, several hours after Andorra FC goalkeeper Jesus Owono struck him in the chest with a flying knee. Owono was sent off before the Spanish second-division match was abandoned.

Owono, 25, is reportedly planning to apologise to de Miguel’s family. He is said to be ‘deeply upset’ and has maintained that there was ‘no intention to cause harm’.

Tenerife supporters reportedly shouted ‘murderer’ at the Andorra goalkeeper and clashed with him as he left the field.

The Homicide Group of Spain’s National Police in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Reports indicate that Owono is unlikely to face criminal sanctions over the fatal collision, with the challenge expected to result in sporting penalties instead.

In Spain, investigations are generally launched whenever a death is not attributed to natural causes.

Spanish sports lawyer Miguel Galan said today: ‘The Supreme Court’s doctrine states that excesses during a play are subject to sporting, not criminal, sanctions.’

De Miguel was admitted to intensive care after the collision. Tenerife announced today that his condition deteriorated overnight and that he died this morning after suffering cardiac arrest.

The striker was treated for more than five minutes as his distressed team-mates looked on, with some appearing to be in tears.

Journalist Iván Alvarez, speaking on COPE radio before De Miguel’s death was announced, reported that the goalkeeper intended to apologise to De Miguel’s family in person. 

Alvarez added that Owono and Andorra FC had stressed there was ‘no intention to cause harm’. The goalkeeper has also closed his Instagram account after being subjected to ‘murderer’ chants and hostile messages.

‘Some of the people who were at the stadium and some messages I exchanged with players told me it’s the hardest thing they’ve ever experienced on a football pitch,’ the journalist said.

He said Owono was ‘very upset’, adding that ‘no one would ever think of someone wanting to harm a fellow professional in that way’.

Alvarez continued: ‘Andorra emphasises that there was no ill intent at any point, acknowledging that it was a mistimed outburst, an action that went terribly wrong and, I would say, excessive and violent, but they insist there was no intention to cause harm.’

‘Owono, who doesn’t appreciate hearing an entire stadium like the Heliodoro chanting “murderer, murderer”, has even closed his Instagram account after all the criticism he’s received this afternoon.’

‘His intention is to contact Jesus de Miguel’s family or someone close to him personally, when the time is right. He wants to do so privately first, before making any public statement.’

Video filmed from the stands showed Owono confronting supporters as he walked off the pitch.

AS reported that disciplinary rules classify ‘violent conduct toward an opponent during a game that causes serious injury or harm’ as an offence punishable by a suspension of between four and 12 matches.

Andorra goalkeeper Owono is a current Equatorial Guinea international and has represented his nation 44 times in his career, including playing at two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 25-year-old had grown up in the Basque Country after moving to San Sebastian at the age of eight.

Owono came through Real Sociedad’s youth academy and joined Alaves at 16.

He became the first Equatorial Guinean player, who was born in the country, to play in the Spanish top flight.

Owono played 11 LaLiga matches before joining Andorra on loan last season, with the goalkeeper signing permanently for the club this summer.

The goalkeeper and his team-mates had reportedly returned to Barcelona this morning.

De Miguel is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest while being transported to hospital and had to be revived inside the ambulance, according to Spanish media outlet Marca.

Rayco Garcia, Tenerife’s majority shareholder, and the club’s president Felipe Minambres spoke outside the hospital on Tuesday afternoon of the ‘unbearable pain’ of the loss of De Miguel.

The club confirmed plans for fans to pay tribute to De Miguel this Saturday at their stadium, while outlining that De Miguel’s team-mates will receive support following the tragedy.

‘We are facing an unprecedented situation. We are very hurt, Tenerife fans are in mourning. It is very difficult to accept. Tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, we will have the definitive ‘ok’ to transfer the player’s body, at the express wish of his family, to Navahermosa, in Toledo,’ Rayco said, as per Radio Marca Tenerife.

‘There we will pay our last farewell to Jesús de Miguel. On Saturday we summoned all the fans of the island, at 18:00, at the Heliodoro, to say our last goodbye together, and we will join forces to move forward. Life has hit us all, but we are a big family and we are going to move forward.’

Minambres added: ‘It is a very sad day for all the Blue and White sentiment and for world football. It is an unlived situation, that a player dies like this on a pitch. We are in moments of weakness, of sadness, of not believing what has happened.

‘We will go through the mourning and this will make us more united. We have to spend a week in mourning, we are going to need professional help, us, the players and their families. Also that of our followers.

‘We have to pay the tribute that ‘Demi’ deserves. We will always carry it in our hearts. It is a great misfortune that we have suffered.’

In a statement this morning, CD Tenerife had confirmed the striker’s death, saying: ‘Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic death, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.’

‘There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing to mitigate this feeling full of sadness. 

‘We are with his devastated family, with his loved ones, with all the people of Tenerife who today mourn this cruel outcome. 

‘The family of Jesús de Miguel is grateful for each and every one of the expressions of support received, and also requests, from the bottom of its heart, maximum respect for his privacy, in these terrible moments.’ 

De Miguel had become a father just last year, and according to El Espanol, his wife and baby daughter were watching in the stands as the fatal incident occurred. 

Tributes have been paid to De Miguel from across the football world following the tragic incident.

UEFA has confirmed that a minute of silence will be held at all their matches this week in tribute to De Miguel. Arsenal held a minute of silence at training on Tuesday morning. 

‘We are heartbroken by the death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda,’ president Aleksander Čeferin said.

‘We have searched for words and found only silence. In that silence, our hearts and thoughts are with his family, his teammates, everyone at CD Tenerife, and all those who mourn this tragic loss.’ 

The Royal Spanish Football Federation have meanwhile cancelled all domestic matches today.

Tenerife’s opponents FC Andorra offered their condolences following news of De Miguel’s death, writing: ‘With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesús de Miguel, to all his teammates, friends, and to CD Tenerife. Rest in peace.’

Football clubs across Spain, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, have led tributes following the news of the death.

‘Our thoughts and support are with his family, friends and loved ones during these difficult times,’ Barcelona said in a statement.

Real Madrid also expressed their condolences, stating: ‘Real Madrid wishes to express its condolences and affection to his family, his teammates, his club, and all his loved ones.’

The Spanish Footballers Association also released a statement, expressing their ‘deepest sorrow’ at the footballer’s death.

‘His loss leaves a huge void among those of us who shared his passion for football, his commitment to the footballers’ community, and his work defending the rights of our fellow professionals,’ the statement continued.

‘The Board of Directors, all the staff of AFE, and the footballers’ community wish to extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones, as well as to his teammates at Club Deportivo Tenerife. In these moments of immense sadness, we send them all our love, support, and solidarity. You will always be part of our family.’

De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 and scored 11 goals in 30 appearances to help secure the team promotion from the Spanish third division as champions.

The forward had previously helped to secure Internacional de Madrid and CD Castellón promotions from the fourth and third divisions, respectively.

CD Castellon also released a statement on Tuesday morning in tribute to their former player, saying: ‘With broken hearts and inconsolable grief, Club Deportivo Castellón bids farewell to Jesús De Miguel.

‘Words fail to express the profound injustice of this loss. He wore this shirt with pride, celebrated goals with our fans at the SkyFi Castalia stadium, and was an integral part of a story that this fanbase will never forget. 

‘We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, offering them our heartfelt support during this difficult time. We also join CD Tenerife and its fans in mourning, sharing this sorrow with them. You will always be one of us, Demi. Rest in peace.’

A New York City Marathon runner who collapsed approximately two miles before the finish line exchanged a series of distressing text messages with her father during Sunday’s race.

Rachel Apa, 24, was reportedly struck by rhabdomyolysis, a condition involving the rapid breakdown of muscle tissue. Friends and family said she had been in “perfect health” before taking part in her first marathon, but she appeared to begin experiencing pain during the event.

When Apa reached the 18-mile mark—around two-thirds of the 26.2-mile course—she texted her father, Steve Apa, a brief but alarming message: “Ow,” according to The New York Times.

After pushing through another mile, she sent a second message: “Ow, Ow.”

Steve Apa was following his daughter’s progress through the marathon’s tracking app from their home in Pennsylvania. As she reached the 23-mile point, he attempted to reassure her with a message that read, “Final stretch.”

She did not respond. Shortly afterward, Apa collapsed in Central Park near the 24-mile mark, just two miles from completing the New York City Marathon.

She was pronounced dead late Sunday. Her father told the outlet that doctors attributed her death to rhabdomyolysis, a serious medical emergency in which damaged muscles rapidly break down.

The process can release proteins, including myoglobin, into the bloodstream. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the buildup may severely damage the kidneys and potentially result in organ failure.

New York’s top officials are under growing pressure to outline a clear response after two apparently unprovoked attacks on women in major public spaces over the past two weeks.

One victim remains on life support after police said an unidentified assailant approached her during a run and stabbed her in the throat.

The NYPD told News Media that Katie Suarez, 28, was taken to a hospital after Friday evening’s attack on the Shore Parkway Greenway in Brooklyn. Police said she “sustained multiple stab wounds.”

Suarez is an avid runner who has completed races organized by New York Road Runners.

“We were sad to hear of this horrible attack — our hearts are with her family and the running community,” a spokesperson for the organization said.

Suarez was not registered for this past weekend’s New York City Marathon.

Responding to the recent violence, a spokesperson for New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the governor has zero tolerance for violence of any kind and believes perpetrators must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. “Since taking office, the Governor has funded law enforcement at record levels and strengthened bail and discovery laws to hold all violent offenders accountable. Governor Hochul’s top priority is public safety and she will always fight to protect all New Yorkers.”

New York City Council Member Kayla Santosuosso, who represents southern Brooklyn, also addressed the attack.

In a statement to News Media, she said, “I am horrified by the stabbing of Katie Suarez, and first and foremost my thoughts are with Katie and her loving family. I have been personally assured by Police Commissioner Tisch that the NYPD is pulling out all the stops in their efforts to catch the perpetrator. The promenade where this horrific crime took place has been poorly lit for years, since well before I took office. We will be working to ensure that upcoming renovations to the pedestrian bridge near the scene and the promenade itself will include sufficient lighting.”

Santosuosso described the recent violence against women as “deeply disturbing.”

She added, “We deserve to be able to walk and jog in our neighborhoods without worrying for our safety. This is a serious and personal issue for me as a woman and as a mother and I will be doing everything in my power to keep southern Brooklyn a place where women can live without fear.”

Retired NYPD inspector and Fox News contributor Paul Mauro said improved lighting and expanded surveillance should be among the first steps taken to prevent similar attacks.

“Lighting is great, but I would not only ask for that. I would ask for cameras and very ostentatious cameras.”

“You want people to feel like they are observed,” he said.

Mauro said Santosuosso’s call for better “lighting” in the area “tacitly” echoes the “broken windows” policing strategy associated with the Giuliani era in New York City. The approach focused on addressing lower-level crimes and public disorder to deter more serious offenses. It was popularized under former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who served from 1994 to 2001.

In a separate case, police said a 39-year-old woman was raped at knifepoint in Central Park on Oct. 24, across from a stretch of multimillion-dollar apartments along Fifth Avenue.

It was the fifth reported sexual assault in the park this year. Police have made no arrests in either of the two recent cases.

This perceived silence on street-level interventions for everyday New Yorkers has drawn sharp criticism, especially when contrasted with the state’s aggressive response to higher-profile collegiate incidents.

Last month, Hochul took unprecedented executive action regarding an alleged gang-rape at Cornell University, appointing Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor and directing State Police to take over sexual assault complaints on the Ivy League campus.

While Hochul publicly vowed not to let the Cornell case get “swept under the rug,” critics argue that the same fierce executive urgency is nowhere to be found for New York City residents navigating daily life and public parks in the five boroughs.

In response to the attack on Suarez, James said in a post on X on Monday: “This is outrageous and unacceptable. No New Yorker should have to fear such violence. I’m praying for a swift recovery for Katie, and keeping her family in my thoughts. I urge anyone with information to contact @NYPDTips.”

A spokesperson for Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office said: “The recent attacks on women across our city are horrific. Every New Yorker should be able to walk anywhere in our city at any time of day or night without fear of violence. The Mamdani administration is committed to ensuring that survivors are heard and supported — and that those responsible are held accountable. We will continue working with survivors, service providers and community partners to strengthen prevention, close gaps in services and confront gender-based violence.”

Neither the mayor nor City Council mentioned increasing patrols in the city – something Mauro sees as a major red flag.

“Nobody will be willing to admit that good policing keeps people safe because they need the police as something to beat up on,” he said.

While city leaders have kept quiet on the possibility of increasing patrols following the recent attacks, Mauro warned that any young woman who either lives in the city currently or is planning a move there should educate herself on the real dangers that are happening in the city.

“Young women, you better understand what you’re getting into because you are joining a city whose leadership does not prioritize your safety. They take it for granted, and they are willing to countenance instances like this in furtherance of some wrongheaded notional agenda that is going to lead us all into some socialist egalitarian Shangri-La that is never going to arrive.”
