Coinbase CEO Considers Leaving California, Slams Wealth Tax as ‘Un-American’ Threat

0

Coinbase’s chief, Brian Armstrong, is contemplating a significant move: potentially relocating his company out of California in response to what he calls the state’s “deeply un-American” proposed wealth tax.

Speaking candidly on “The Katie Miller Podcast” earlier this week, Armstrong expressed concern over the exodus of tech entrepreneurs from California, spurred by the state’s unprecedented proposal to tax billionaires. His company, with its main office nestled in San Francisco, could soon join the migration.

Armstrong, whose net worth is pegged at $8.8 billion by Forbes, did not hold back his criticism. “I think it’s deeply un-American to seize people’s assets. It might be unconstitutional,” he declared, underlining a deep unease with policies targeting the affluent.

He acknowledged paying substantial taxes on his income and emphasized his willingness to continue doing so. However, Armstrong argued that an additional levy on wealth and assets veers California towards a “third-world” status, describing it as a perilous direction for governance.

“It’s against my values, I would say,” Armstrong added, highlighting his belief that such measures harm not only California but the nation as a whole. “So we’re considering any and all options basically at this point in terms of relocation,” he concluded, signaling openness to exploring every possibility beyond the Golden State.

The exec added that he wouldn’t be so opposed to additional taxes if there wasn’t so much fraud and waste in the government.

Armstrong told CNBC last week that he’s considering relocating his home out of California by the end of the year.

As of June, Coinbase – an American crypto exchange and wallet platform with venture capitalist powerhouse Marc Andreessen on its board – employed 4,300 workers internationally.

The company insists it is a remote-first operation – but last May it signed a lease for 150,000 square feet of San Francisco office space. That came just four years after it paid $25 million to break its previous office lease in the same city.

Coinbase also operates offices in New York, North Carolina, London, Singapore, Luxembourg, Dublin and Bangalore, India, as well as many remote positions, according to its website.

It is unclear how many people Coinbase employs in California. The company did not respond to The Post’s requests for comment.

Prop 40, California’s proposed billionaire tax, would impose a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of roughly 200 billionaires living in the Golden State.

Mega-rich techies have pumped millions of dollars into a campaign to kill the tax. Google co-founder Sergey Brin has spent more than $100 million fighting the rule, which would cost him more than $13 billion personally.

Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg reportedly bought a $170 million mansion near Miami this year while venture capitalist Peter Thiel, ex-Uber CEO Travis Kalanick and Google co-founder Larry Page have fled the state.

Even California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has opposed the tax, warning it could hurt the state’s economy. Still, he’s backed a “national billionaires’ tax,” saying today’s office worker shouldn’t have to “shoulder a higher tax rate than the heiress.”

Californians are set to vote on the billionaire tax in November. If enacted, 90% of funding it raises would go toward healthcare services in the Golden State, while the remaining 10% would be spent on food assistance and education.

The ballot comes ahead of President Trump’s expected budget cuts next year. The state’s Medicaid program alone is predicted to lose up to $30 billion in federal funding.

Armstrong on Tuesday praised Trump for his friendly approach toward the cryptocurrency industry – while bashing former President Joe Biden and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

The Coinbase boss said Trump recognized in 2024 that there was a “massive voter base” of pro-crypto Americans.

“By the way, it wasn’t just like a good political opportunity,” Armstrong added. “He recognized that for the United States to stay relevant as a financial and technology hub, we have to embrace this … because if not, it’s all going to go offshore.”

“It’s not like you can uninvent crypto at this point, right?  Like someone is going to do it in the world. You can’t just bury your head in the sand. So whether you like crypto or hate crypto, you got to put clear rules in the book so it can be built here in America.”

He accused the Biden administration of “an active campaign to try to curtail or even kill” the crypto industry, adding that Warren “had lots of influence with the financial regulators at that time.”

Last week, Armstrong attended a White House event alongside several other crypto CEOs where Trump pressured Congress to pass the Clarity Act, a crypto regulation bill, by the end of this year.

After Trump’s re-election win, Armstrong attended a Crypto Ball event held at the Mellon Auditorium, down the street from the White House, the weekend of Trump’s inauguration.

A few months later in March, Armstrong sat three seats from Trump at a White House summit for crypto industry leaders.

Canada Responds to Trump with $20 Billion Dollar-for-Dollar Tariff Retaliation

0

In a decisive move, Canada has introduced “dollar for dollar” retaliatory tariffs as a direct response to the U.S., following President Donald Trump’s Monday announcement of a hefty 50 percent duty threat.

On Tuesday, Ottawa unveiled its plan to match Trump’s tariff threats in both size and scope, announcing tariffs that climb up to 50 percent on goods and services from the U.S., affecting around $20 billion in trade.

These new Canadian tariffs, which range between 15 and 50 percent, will impact more than 700 products manufactured in America.

Canada’s countermeasures specifically target U.S. exports including aluminum, steel, dairy, wood, paper items, seafood, and apparel, substantially affecting these industries.

According to a statement from the Canadian Embassy in the U.S., these retaliatory tariffs will apply to U.S. imports worth $27.6 billion, concentrating on industries like steel, dairy, home appliances, farm equipment, pulp and paper products, and electronics—sectors that have been heavily impacted by American tariffs.

Canada’s latest tariff salvo looks strikingly similar to those imposed by the US. Each country is targeting the other’s steel and lumber products.

The retaliatory tariffs come just after Trump threatened to rename Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America,’ a move sure to enrage Canadian officials and citizens.

‘The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to [be] doing much business with Ontario any longer,’ the President wrote on Truth Social Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday, Canada enacted a retaliatory tariff on the US, matching 'dollar for dollar' the new rates that President Donald Trump placed on the US's northern neighbor. Canadian Prime Minsiter Mark Carney, shown above, has stated that

Lake Ontario straddles the border, with New York state along its southern and eastern shores and the Canadian province of Ontario to the north. It is not controlled outright by either Canada or the US and has instead been jointly managed under the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty for more than a century.

Trump could order US federal agencies to call it ‘Lake America,’ but Canada would not be required to recognize the new name.

The move is reminiscent of the president’s previous renaming of the Gulf of Mexico, which the US government now refers to as the Gulf of America.

The tariff spat has turned deeply personal after negotiations fell apart last week.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has said that Trump can kiss his ‘a**,’ noting his backside has a lot of ‘real estate.’

Trump has warned that Canada needs to ‘fall in line’ or it will face ‘far worse’ consequences. He has recently said that the US northern neighbor is his least favorite country to deal with.

‘I deal with many countries, and Canada is easily the most difficult and unreasonable,’ Trump wrote on social media.

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs are set to go into effect on September 8.

Had the two countries reached a trade agreement last week before the Saturday deadline, the additional rate hikes likely could have been avoided altogether.

Has Trump’s trade war with Canada gone too far?

The president posted last week that he would extend the negotiating period in hopes that a deal could be struck. But his extension proved fruitless, and neither side was willing to compromise to the other’s demands.

Minutes after his threat to rename the lake, Trump sent out another post on Truth Social: ‘I would never interfere with Canadians speaking French! In fact, I have never even thought of doing such a stupid thing.’

‘This lie was made up by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister in an attempt to gain political support, which he has totally lost, from the people of Quebec. I love French Canadians!’

Carney previously claimed the US had made ‘threats’ and demands targeting French-language protections and Quebec culture during tariff negotiations.

‘President Trump ascended to the White House on a clear promise to the forgotten men and women of America that they would be forgotten no longer,’ White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement.

‘Countless American workers, farmers, and businesses have borne the brunt of America’s lopsided trade relations, including with Canada which has demanded total access to the American market without reciprocity.’

Legendary Country Icon Dolly Parton Dies at 80: A Music and Cultural Phenomenon Remembered

0

The world mourns the loss of Dolly Parton, an iconic figure in country music and a celebrated philanthropist, who passed away at the age of 80. Renowned for her timeless songs and her entrepreneurial spirit, particularly her beloved Dollywood theme park, Parton’s legacy is deeply cherished.

The news of Parton’s passing was confirmed by her publicist, though no specifics regarding the cause of death have been shared.

Tune in to “Dolly Parton: An American Original – A Special Edition of 20/20,” airing tonight, Aug. 25 at 10/9c on ABC. It will be available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu the following day.

In September 2025, Parton shared on Instagram that she was facing some health challenges and needed to undergo several medical procedures. She did not elaborate on her condition but mentioned her ongoing recovery from “a few little health issues” during Dollywood’s seasonal reopening nearly six months later.

Having celebrated her 80th birthday the previous January, Parton was also coping with the profound grief following the passing of her husband, Carl Dean, in March 2025. After nearly six decades of marriage, she expressed that she was taking time to heal and rebuild herself spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

President Donald Trump called Parton “one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER” in a social media post reacting to her passing. “There has never been anyone like her, and never will. In her honor, I am lowering the American flag throughout the United States for a one week period beginning tonight at 6:00PM.”

In a music career that began when she was still a child, born into poverty in the tiny mountain community of Pittman Center, Tennessee, Parton went on to become one of the world’s most successful and admired entertainers, regarded as a country music living legend. Her trademark style – big blonde hair, flamboyant clothes and makeup – was cultivated early in her career, while she was still in her teens.”I take my negatives and try to make them into positives, and I always feel better being more flamboyant,” Parton wrote in her 2023 book “Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones.” “Maybe I looked cheap, but I knew I wasn’t cheap.”

Parton’s style helped her get noticed but her musical gifts made her unforgettable. She wrote and recorded many of country and pop’s most enduring songs, including the hits “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” – added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2011 – “Here You Come Again,” “Love Is Like a Butterfly,” “9 to 5” and more.

Parton’s biggest hit, however, was inarguably “I Will Always Love You,” which topped the charts three times, most notably when Whitney Houston’s 1992 cover became a global smash. Houston’s performance remains the best-selling song by a female artist of all time.

In 2014, the Record Industry Association of America recognized Parton for sales of over 100 million units worldwide, including 19 RIAA-certified gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums out of the more than 100 studio, live and compilation albums she released during her six-decade-plus recording career.

Parton was also an actress, making her big-screen debut in the 1980 hit comedy “9 to 5,” opposite Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, and wrote and performed the film’s chart-topping, Grammy-winning theme song. Not including cameos as herself, she appeared in some nine films in all, among them the enduring 1989 comedy-drama “Steel Magnolias.”

Sean’s Dream Crushed: Mysterious ‘Massive Black Box’ Shatters Family Plans

0

Two years ago, right after the birth of his son, Sean Brown relocated to West Footscray, dreaming of an ideal environment for his growing family. He envisioned lush parks, convenient train access, and a thriving community poised for development.

However, the reality now is that his residence sits just 300 meters away from one of Australia’s largest data centers.

“It’s this immense, dark structure placed right in a residential zone. You can’t really overlook its imposing presence,” Brown explains to SBS News.

Located in a suburb of Melbourne, NextDC’s M3 facility emits a persistent buzzing noise, noticeable even at a distance of 100 meters, says Brown. The area is also subjected to ongoing construction, bringing unending light pollution, noise, and disruption.

Competition for parking has increased as facility employees vie for street spaces. Brown reports entire streets experiencing day-long power outages during infrastructure updates, with minimal notice and no recompense. He’s also anxious about potential health hazards and what this means for the suburb’s future.

A man wearing glasses smiling against a white wall.

Branded by its chief executive, Craig Scroggie, as “Australia’s largest hyperscale AI factory”, the M3 site is set to double in size by 2027 — covering 10 hectares in size, and drawing 225MW of power, 24 hours a day.

A separate facility, the Perri Melbourne Data Centre (PMDC), has been approved and planned just a few blocks over.

There are currently 162 operational data centres across Australia, with a further 90 proposed, according to the Climate Council — and it’s unclear whether planned rules to data centres in residential areas will apply to any of them.

Government crackdown on new data centres

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will use a speech to the Business Council of Australia’s annual dinner on Tuesday night to announce new national rules that would block future data centres from being built near homes, schools, or prime agricultural land.

Developers will also be required to add more renewable energy to the grid than their data centres consume, minimise water use, and ensure new sites are appropriate for their size — avoiding land that could otherwise be used for housing.

“Australia is in a strong position to attract investment in data centres, but maintaining social licence will be essential,” Albanese will say.

“That means ensuring energy bills do not rise, water security is maintained and locations are appropriate.”

Asked about communities already living with data centres, Albanese did not directly answer when pressed on ABC Perth on Tuesday, instead pointing to the same social licence framework.

Asked by SBS News whether any measures would target existing sites or address community concern that the new rules don’t cover people already affected, the prime minister’s office declined to comment.

A map showing two data centres in West Footscray.

A big gap

While Brown welcomes the changes in principle, he says they don’t reach the people already living with the consequences.

“If it doesn’t fix the problems that have been caused in West Footscray, what’s the point of it?” Brown said. “This community’s just been completely sold down the river if we’re not looked after. Why do our children continue to bear this risk?”

He’s sceptical that the sites would have been approved under the new government frameworks and says it needs to expand to existing data centres, not just the new ones.

“If areas where they’ve already been inappropriately built are just left to fend for themselves, how is that fair at all?”

Associate Professor Dr Ehsan Noroozinejad, a researcher at the Urban Transformations Research Centre at Western Sydney University, welcomed the government’s changes but said a clear gap remained.

“The proposed rules mainly shape future development, so they do not automatically resolve concerns around existing facilities,” he told SBS News.

A large building alongside a house.

“Communities already living near data centres need clear standards for noise, water use, backup generators, traffic and energy impacts, backed by transparent monitoring.”

Noroozinejad said Australia still needs data centres, but problems arise when they aren’t put in the right places with the right infrastructure.

“It’s important not to assume every data centre creates the same problems,” he said. “The real issue is performance, location, and whether costs are shifted onto the surrounding community.”

Dr Michael Vardon, from the Fenner School of Environment and Society at Australian National University, says the deeper problem is procedural: communities have almost no input before a facility is approved.

“This is about where new facilities go, and setback rules do not apply retrospectively,” Vardon tells SBS News.

“The approval comes first, the community finds out afterwards, and by then the only remaining policy lever is the operating conditions.”

A view of a street with a large building in the background.

Olivia Shen, director of the strategic technologies program with the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, says a key provision of the changes will be whether they apply to both expansion of existing data centres as well as new projects.

“Many data centres have operated in Australia for decades, often without the surrounding community even realising they are there,” Shen tells SBS News. “However, if existing data centres are allowed to expand to a point where they encroach on homes, schools and agricultural land, then this becomes a bit of a policy loophole.”

‘We feel really powerless’

Another West Footscray resident, Kendal Coombs, bought a house four years ago about 200 metres from the M3 site, when the block was still vacant.

She said she was initially told by council that the site was going to be a “business park”, but realised a few months after moving in that it was a data centre — which was initially not a concern until its rapid expansion.

“We’re all angry and concerned but it’s hard to know what to do, we feel really powerless,” she says.

“These projects destroy communities. If they’re making these determinations [that future data centres can’t be built near homes or schools] because it is too unsafe or too much of a risk to our health to live near them, then they need to pay reparations to the residents affected.”

Brown says the centres have made it harder to sell up and leave.

“There’s a lot of people here who are really angry about what impact this is going to have on their house prices — because I sure as hell wouldn’t live near a data centre,” he says. “I wouldn’t buy this house.”

He’s pushing for compensation: voluntary housing buybacks at competitive market rates for those who no longer want to live there, relocation costs covered for owners and renters alike, and payment for disruption already endured.

NextDC has not responded to these proposals, Brown says, adding government intervention is needed.

Both Noroozinejad and Vardon say more transparency and reporting is needed for existing data centres in neighbourhoods — particularly information around water and energy use, noise, independent monitoring, and a complaints register.

Practical measures such as acoustic upgrades, landscaping, traffic management and limits on backup-generator testing can also help, Noroozinejad says.

But for Brown, it might be too late.

“They’ve just killed this area now,” he says. “We’re witnessing the death of a suburb.”

NextDC declined to comment.

Revitalize Muscles in Minutes: Transformative Morning Routine for Over-60s

0

Transform your fitness routine with this swift workout designed to both rebuild and sustain muscle health. It’s a real game-changer.

>

It’s astonishing to note that fewer than 15% of older adults engage in strength training twice a week, despite it being crucial for maintaining health as we age. Muscle loss is a natural part of growing older, just when maintaining strength becomes vital. Understandably, life’s demands often sideline fitness efforts. To address this, we turned to Domenic Angelino, MS, MPH, CSCS, CPT, the Chief Exercise Scientist at FitCraft. He crafted a quick six-minute morning routine aimed at swiftly restoring muscle more effectively than conventional weight training for those over 60.

Standing Toe Touches

“Engaging in a dynamic warm-up prior to exercise enhances your safe range of motion during the workout, especially in resistance training,” explains Angelino. “Standing toe touches are particularly beneficial for improving hamstring flexibility, which tends to diminish significantly by the age of 60. Increased flexibility in your hamstrings decreases the likelihood of injuries.”

Overhead Arm Swings

“This is an easy dynamic stretch that can help you improve your overhead mobility. This directly prepares you for one of the exercises you’ll be doing in this workout, the overhead press,” Angelino points out.

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-distance apart and knees slightly relaxed.
  2. Lift both arms overhead, making sure your shoulders are relaxed.
  3. Then, swing your arms forward and slightly back with control.
  4. Continue this swinging movement.
  5. Perform 1 set of 15 seconds, resting for 5 seconds.

6 Standing Exercises That Build More Strength Than Traditional Dumbbell Exercises After 40

Cross-Body Arm Swings

“This dynamic stretch can be helpful if you’re dealing with rounded shoulders, something that is pretty common in people over the age of 60,” Angelino notes.

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-distance apart and arms at your sides.
  2. Start to gently swing both arms across the front of your body, alternating which arm crosses on top.
  3. Make sure your arms swing out to the sides before crossing them again.
  4. Perform 1 set of 15 seconds, resting for 5 seconds.

7 Simple Bodyweight Exercises That Keep You Stronger Than Most 30-Year-Olds After 50

Bodyweight Squats

“Squats are a simple and effective way to train your most important lower body muscles all at the same time,” Angelino explains. “Having [this exercise] as a cornerstone of your quick routine can provide you with a lot of flexibility in the future to adapt to your changing exercise needs.”

  1. Stand tall with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Extend your arms ahead of you or place your hands on your hips.
  3. Bend at the knees and hips as you lower into a squat.
  4. Descend until your thighs are parallel to the floor.
  5. Press through your heels to rise back up to standing.
  6. Perform 2 sets of 30 seconds, resting for 20 seconds between sets.

Tension Mounts as Last Witness Testifies in Lindsay Clancy Trial Ahead of Verdict

0

The final witness in Lindsay Clancy’s case has taken the stand, marking the conclusion of a tense five-week trial as she awaits her verdict.

On Tuesday, FBI forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff testified as the prosecution’s closing rebuttal witness in the high-profile murder trial.

In 2023, Clancy, 36, tragically took the lives of her three children—five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and Callan, who was only eight months old—at their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts.

She used exercise bands to strangle her children and then allegedly attempted suicide, a bid that was unsuccessful and left her paralyzed, confined to a wheelchair permanently.

Although Clancy has confessed to the killings, she has pleaded not guilty to murder, citing postpartum psychosis as her defense. She is seeking commitment to a state mental health facility rather than being sentenced to prison.

Saathoff, who interviewed Clancy by Zoom twice for a total of about 11 hours, revealed new details about her version of the killings.

Clancy told him that her hallucination – the voice – occurred when she was standing at the refrigerator.

She said she was making the children their dinner when Patrick called.

He had called at 5.33pm, but she missed it and called back one minute later.

After she returned the call, she said she then heard the voice.

However, Dr Saathoff testified that she told Dr Margaret Spinelli she heard it almost as soon as Patrick left the home, around 5.15pm.

She also told some experts that the children would suffer if she did not kill them as well as herself – but had not said that to him.

The voice was ‘very clear, ‘came from outside her head,’ and was ‘constant.’

The voice repeated ‘over and over and over again’ while she was killing her children. Then it stopped when she had finished killing the children, he said.

It’s not typical for someone in psychosis to hear the voice only one time or to hear a constant voice rather than intermittent, according to Saathoff.

She said it was the ‘same thing in the same tone repeated over and over and over until she had strangled Callan.’

Committing the act is not curative of the voice, he added.

The forensic psychiatrist said the widely different reports from Clancy and Patrick raised doubts.

‘One of them is not correct in their statement,’ he said.

Saathoff testified that Clancy told him she started to hear the command voice that told her to kill the kids when she was standing at the refrigerator, after Patrick called her

What I saw in the Lindsay Clancy trial brought the courtroom to tears

I’m Rachel Sharp, US Crime Desk Editor, and I have been in court covering every day of the Lindsay Clancy trial.

The trial, as many of you will know, is streamed live for the world to see. But not everything is shown to the public; some things are simply too distressing – and these moments have had Lindsay, her parents, the jurors, and members of the media in tears.

I have shared my experiences in our new podcast series, which you can listen to for free by clicking here

A bowl of chicken nuggets was found on the couch in the home during the search – where Dawson had been sitting eating – supporting Patrick’s account.

‘It’s hard to know which version is the one I should consider,’ he said.

Dr. Saathoff testified that Patrick told him they had never gotten takeout from 3V, but they had from several other places nearby.

They had eaten there before, though, and liked it, he testified.

The order in which she made those decisions was not what Clancy said.

Instead of asking her husband if they should get takeout, he said she did a lot of searching for the restaurant and the route first.

Clancy looked into the Miralax for Cora and CVS after 4pm but did not mention the importance of picking it up until just before he left, he said.

‘She also added on that errand right before he left,’ he said.

‘It lengthened the trip. It added one extra obligation for Patrick, and that would make for a longer time that he was away,’ he said.

Clancy said that, after calling Patrick, that was when she took Dawson down the stairs into Patrick’s office to strangle him.

Cora and Callan were left upstairs.

Clancy said she could not recall what she said to get him to come downstairs or whether he resisted.

She then went up to get Cora, bringing her into the living room area of the basement.

After killing Cora, she then went back upstairs to get Callan.

She could not remember where she had left Callan during that time.

‘Dr Resnick described Ms Clancy as a puppet, but the children were not puppets,’ Dr Saathoff testified.

He noted how active the children were in footage from a water park and a museum.

Judge William Sullivan then called for the jury to be dismissed for the day.

He advised that the evidence will likely conclude on Wednesday, and then he will meet with the attorneys.

Sullivan anticipates closing arguments on Thursday, after which the jury will begin deliberations.

Mamdani Champions Speedy Housing Court Reform, Defends Tenants

0

On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled an innovative initiative aimed at expediting urgent cases within the city’s Housing Court. Known as the Unified Court System, this program seeks to swiftly address emergency housing issues across New York City.

“I am delighted to introduce the Unified Court System, which will significantly speed up emergency housing court proceedings where New Yorkers’ health, safety, and overall well-being are endangered,” Mamdani declared at a press conference held on Tuesday.

According to Mamdani, this pioneering system is designed to cut down the waiting period for tenants seeking emergency hearings related to possible landlord neglect.

“This expedited process will prioritize the most urgent and complex cases,” Mamdani stated. “These include situations where at least a third of a building’s units are under an open vacate order, forcing families out of their homes, and circumstances where a similar proportion of units are dealing with immediate and hazardous violations concerning essential services.”

In cases of “persistent and extreme negligence” where tenants request entirely new building management, judges will require parties to return to court “within five days after service is completed,” Mamdani announced.

When asked how his office would differentiate between a landlord who was persistently negligent and one who simply couldn’t afford to keep up with the costs of building management, Mamdani did not hold back.

“We’re talking about cases where a third of the building is facing some kind of a serious violation. Cases where we have elevators broken down,” he started.

“When it comes to the law, everyone has to follow it. And for far too long that has somehow not been understood when it comes to housing in our city. If a landlord is not able to follow the law, then they should not be a landlord of that property,” he replied.

When asked about how to enforce any violators who might not appear to Housing Court after the five-day window, Mamdani said, “There is still a lot of work to follow through on.”

Montana Dad Speaks Out: Heartbreak After Family Massacre Leaves 8 Dead

0

In the shadow of unimaginable tragedy, a Montana father is speaking out about the frantic moments he experienced upon hearing a gunman had stormed his home, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. His desperate calls to reach his children, lost amid the chaos as the residence was engulfed in flames, haunt him.

Adam Ghekiere, stricken by the loss of his entire family, recounted the heart-wrenching trauma to The U.S. Sun. The victims included his daughter Charlotte, 12, his son Landon, 15, his wife Megan, two stepchildren aged 7 and 13, their wheelchair-bound great-grandmother, 92, and two other relatives—all casualties of this shocking mass shooting.

While performing his duties as a rescue firefighter at an airshow on Sunday evening, Ghekiere’s world turned upside down when alerts over the communication system pointed to an emergency unfolding near his in-laws’ home in Billings.

“I tried to reach my family, dialing the house repeatedly, but the silence was piercing,” he shared with the outlet. His attempts to check the locations of his children, Landon and Charlotte, were met with the same crushing silence.

His fears intensified upon arrival at the scene, where officials maintained a safety perimeter due to the active shooter situation. “The moment I was barred from my home, I realized I was living my worst nightmare,” he reflected, his voice filled with the weight of his loss.

Ghekiere said the killer, who took his own life after shooting up the house, is a member of his extended family who had begun harboring a grudge toward his parents.

“I don’t think the shooter expected my kids to be there,” said Ghekiere.

Police have not given an official motive yet for the killings and have not released the suspect’s name.

Authorities are expected to hold a press conference on Wednesday to give further details.

Enes Kanter Freedom Criticizes WNBA’s Draft Ruling: A Demand for Fairness and Equality

In a bold move that has sent ripples through the sports community, former NBA standout Enes Kanter Freedom is doubling down on his intention to enter the WNBA Draft. Amid swirling reports that the women’s basketball league has ruled him ineligible for the 2027 draft, the ex-NBA player remains undeterred. Kanter Freedom’s declaration to join the WNBA comes during a heated debate over transgender athletes in sports. Reports surfaced Monday indicating the league has decided that both he and fellow former NBA player Royce White, who also declared interest, would not be allowed to compete. This latest development follows closely on the heels of an altercation at a WNBA game, where Kanter Freedom was escorted out after a skirmish with Chicago Sky’s Natasha Cloud while watching courtside. The confrontation, which erupted between Kanter Freedom and Cloud during a matchup against the Indiana Fever, quickly went viral as the two exchanged heated words before security intervened. On the same day, Kanter Freedom addressed the ongoing controversy in an interview with Fox News.

Player asserts eligibility under WNBA rules

In response to the league’s reported decision, Kanter Freedom stated, “Listen, Article 13 Section 1 says if you identify as a woman, then you are allowed to play! I identify as a woman, so yes, I can play.” He further provoked the discussion by claiming, “They’re terrified because I might actually get drafted and play against their big men. I’m probably going to drop 60 points… I’m going to try to beat Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 100 points in a single game. I might go over 100 points for sure.” According to the WNBA’s current collective bargaining agreement, only individuals identifying as female are eligible, yet no detailed definition of a woman is provided.

League responds to rule challenge

Front Office Sports reported that a representative from the WNBA remarked, “We are not going to give oxygen to efforts designed to mock the league or use this topic to demean and marginalize others.” When Kanter Freedom was challenged with the notion that he would ultimately be barred from playing in the WNBA, he replied, “Why not? That’s the rules. I’m just following the rules. If they ever come out and say: ‘Okay, we’re changing the rules,’ I respect their decision, I will follow the rules.”

Kanter Freedom sparks debate with t-shirt

“But right now, if you identify as a woman, you’re allowed to play. And I am identifying as a woman and I should be allowed to play,” he reiterated. At Sunday’s game in Wintrust Arena, Kanter Freedom sported a provocative T-shirt displaying a stark dictionary definition of ‘woman’ as an ‘Adult human female,’ with the terms woman and female underscored in red. Despite receiving a chilly reception and being expelled from the event, Kanter Freedom denied rumors of being banned from future WNBA games the following Monday.

Determined to attend every Fever playoff game

Confident and unfazed, the 34-year-old player announced his plan to attend all of the Indiana Fever’s upcoming playoff games. “I have not heard it [about an arena ban],” Kanter Freedom declared. “If there is any news out there, please don’t listen to those sources because it’s all fake news. I did not break any kind of rules. I did not step over the baseline. I simply got up and just opened my arms. So they should not be banning me from any games and I am so excited for the playoffs. I cannot wait to go to every playoff game that Indiana Fever plays. It’s going to be fun because I’m a fan of the game.”

Kanter Freedom calls Cunningham a hero

Fever games have been hit by protests and counter protests in recent weeks after Sophie Cunningham sparked a war of words by claiming she wants to ‘protect young girls… who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.’ During his interview on Monday, Kanter Freedom branded Cunningham a ‘national treasure’ who ‘should be protected at all costs.’ ‘She is an American hero,’ he told Fox. ‘Because she’s not only inspiring young girls in America but all over the world. So she is an idol, a hero.’ The 6ft 10ins Freedom previously alleged that it was Cloud who initiated their courtside confrontation and told him that Cunningham ‘won’t sleep with you.’

He defends his support for women

He told OutKick: ‘Sophie Cunningham shot a three, and I put my hands up to celebrate. Literally, a couple [of] possessions later, Natasha came back and started screaming and yelling and said, “She’s not gonna sleep with you.” ‘And I was like, “I am not trying to sleep with her. I’m just here to protect women and support her.” And then, obviously, after that, she started yapping, and she started to walk towards me, and literally I just got up, and then I was like, “I’m just here to protect women, and that’s all.”

[Expletive] shock fans at WNBA game

'She started to yell. She started to use some very heavy language. She started to actually cuss, and I was very shocked that there were a lot of kids and that there were a lot of teenagers at that game. 'I just cannot believe that she was just cussing and using those [expletive] in front of all these kids. I’m sure she’s loved in Chicago and many kids are idolizing her and stuff, but that’s not how a WNBA athlete should react.' Taking to X after he was removed by security, Freedom wrote: 'I just got kicked out of a @WNBA game for supporting WOMEN! Let that sink in, AMERICA!' He also wrote: 'It’s always women hating on other women'.
