Power Outage Causes Significant Disruption to North-West England Rail Services: Find Out If Your Train Is Affected

0

Widespread travel havoc has gripped England’s train network this afternoon, following a significant electricity supply failure.

This power outage, anticipated to persist until the day ends, is predominantly affecting rail operators in the North West and Greater Manchester areas.

National Rail has issued alerts of two-hour service delays, with some journeys outright cancelled or rerouted due to a malfunction at a Manchester communications hub.

Commuters are facing extensive inconvenience, as evidenced by the evacuation of passengers from stationary trains onto tracks in Manchester.

One railway company has suspended operations entirely, citing safety concerns stemming from the breakdown of essential network communication systems.

Network Rail’s Regional Operating Centre – which houses all the controls to safely operate the railway – has also been impacted, the BBC reported.

The cause of the power outage is an ‘external power supply failure’ in the Ardwick area of Manchester, according to Network Rail.

The lines affected are: Avanti West Coast, Cross Country, East Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway, Northern, TransPennine Express, Lumo and Transport for Wales.

Network Rail has warned of major disruption in the North West for the rest of the day and said power issues happened in Manchester just before 2pm.

It said no trains were running between Manchester Piccadilly through to Manchester Victoria and Bolton with other services across the North West network also impacted.

Trains departing London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street also face delays or are being cancelled.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is receiving regular updates about the disruption.

The Labour MP wrote on X: ‘I am sorry to hear passengers in the North West are affected by a power outage, with trains cancelled or delayed.’

An electrical fault at Manchester Piccadilly also halted trains in April.

An extended 12-hour closure of the railway was needed for repairs because of the ‘complex area where this took place, with over 400 metres of damaged lines’, Network Rail said at the time.

Chris Wright, Network Rail North West route director, said: ‘We’re sorry to passengers impacted by a power issues in Manchester which is causing significant delays to trains through the city.

‘While some services are now running, major disruption is expected for the rest of the day. Passengers with tickets can travel on any Bee Network services. I’d urge anyone planning to travel to check National Rail Enquiries for the latest information.’

TPE said it had stopped ‘all trains due to a failure of the communication systems on the network. Trains are unable to run safely’.

The firm said: ‘There is major disruption and no trains or replacement buses are operating and we strongly advise you not to travel.’

Andrew McClements, Customer Experience and Transformation Director for TPE, said: ‘We’re advising customers not to travel on any TransPennine Express services.

‘This power outage has had a significant impact on services through Manchester and across our network, and major disruption is expected for the rest of the day.

‘We’re sorry for the disruption and thank our customers for their patience.’

London Northwestern Railway said a power cut at Crewe was causing disruption to some of its services and that ‘replacement services have been ordered ‘between Crewe and Liverpool Lime Street’.

Avanti West Coast is offering customers full refunds if they no longer wish to travel, while East Midlands Railway and TPE said passengers who have tickets dated for today can use them tomorrow if they decide not to travel.

Meanwhile, East Midlands Railway said it can not run trains between Sheffield and Liverpool Lime Street and it is ‘looking at alternative arrangements’ for passengers.

The rail firm said in a post on X: ‘Please remember that this can take time. We appreciate your patience whilst we do this.’

Some passengers caught in the chaos told Sky News that they had been told ‘to get taxis’ with others stranded at stations for more than 90 minutes.

A heavily pregnant woman said she had to pay an ‘extortionate amount of money for an Uber’ so she could get to her midwife appointment on time.

Greater Manchester’s Bee Network, the city’s integrated transport system, revealed the outage took place at Manchester Rail Operating Centre.

A spokesperson said: ‘Delays and cancellations are expected on all operator routes across Greater Manchester until the end of today (Thursday 6th August). Rail operators have issued a do not travel notice with travel advice and the latest information on the National Rail website.

‘Ticket acceptance is in place on all Bee Network buses and Metrolink services across Greater Manchester for rail passengers affected. More information can be found on the TfGM website.’

CrossCountry Trains said: ‘Due to a fault with the signalling system at Manchester Piccadilly, fewer trains can run on all lines.

‘Train services running to and from this station may be cancelled or delayed.’

Transport for Wales said: ‘Due to a fault with the signalling system between Liverpool Lime Street and Chester, services will be delayed by up to 60 minutes or cancelled in both directions.

‘Disruption to services is expected until 17:30.’

Northern posted on X: ‘Due to a major power failure all lines in the North West are being heavily disrupted.

‘Services will be cancelled or delayed.’

TransPennine Express, meanwhile, posted on X: ‘Due to a power failure within Network Rail in the Greater Manchester/North West area.

‘All trains will be stopped due to a failure of the communication systems on the network. Trains are unable to run safely.

‘We are currently looking into how this disruption may impact your journey, and we will update you on any alternative travel options as soon as possible.

‘Train services running across the whole TransPennine Express network will be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until 16:00.’

2026 Census: Understanding the Risk of Undercounted Australians

0

As evening sets in at Sydney’s Waterloo Green park, a bustling crowd converges, eager for free haircuts, eye exams, and dental check-ups.

The barbeque sizzles with sausages, drawing attendees to the Homelessness Week event affectionately known as Refresh, Recharge & Shine, a visitor tells SBS News, calling it “fantastic”.

“We need more initiatives like this for those in need,” Marie mentioned as she helped coordinate the event.

On August 3, NSW’s housing and homelessness minister, Rose Jackson, shared with SBS News her thoughts that while homelessness may be an uncomfortable topic, it is crucial to bring it to the forefront of national discussions.

“Understanding the demographics, location, age, and gender of those experiencing homelessness is essential data for the government,” she emphasized.

Jackson said data collected during the Census of Population and Housing on 11 August will be “crucial” for allocating resources and services to people experiencing homelessness.

But collecting this information can present logistical challenges.

“I think the ABS [Australian Bureau of Statistics] has done a really good job lifting its level of engagement. I think maybe in the past it wasn’t something that was recognised as a priority,” Jackson said.

“The Census was built around [dropping] a form into people’s letterbox — and for people that don’t have letterboxes, where do you start?”

How to complete the Census if you’re experiencing housing insecurity

Sharon Callister, CEO of Mission Australia, has been working alongside Census field officers to help people experiencing housing insecurity complete the Census.

“There are rough sleepers in Sydney, and many of them are in known rough sleeping spots. Our support services staff go out there. There are also field offices coming from the Census office,” she told SBS News.

She said people in temporary dwellings like boarding houses or hostels can access paper Census forms from accommodation staff.

A crowd of people queue to collect food from vans at a Homelessness Week event in Sydney.

Callister said it can be difficult to capture “hidden homeless” populations. That includes people sleeping in a car or tent, or couch surfing with friends, family or acquaintances without a secure lease.

“We’re at a critical point in Australia. The last Census, there were [more than] 122,000 people homeless. We know from our services today that that number is going to be higher this year.”

If someone is experiencing homelessness, the ABS advises people to write “NONE” in response to the question about where they usually live. Online, this question can be answered by selecting the “Elsewhere in Australia” option, then manually entering “NONE” in the suburb and locality boxes.

If a housing or homelessness service has organised and paid for a person to stay in temporary accommodation, they should write “NONE-CRISIS” for this question.

ABS spokesperson Hasan Hawatmeh told SBS Arabic that the ABS has a dedicated homelessness strategy team to support Census engagement.

“We do have a Homelessness Enumeration Week, so field staff will be deployed to do the actual enumeration. They do have access to a short form, which is a one-page [Census form] just to make sure we don’t add any other complexities to the homeless population.”

Yolanda Saiz, CEO of the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, said people experiencing housing insecurity can visit the organisation’s services for assistance in completing the Census.

“We can help them with computers, with access, with reading and writing if they need that help as well. So, we can facilitate their voice being captured in the Census.”

The ABS is also offering in-person support at pop-up hubs and events across Australia.

Challenges in counting homelessness

In 2021, the ABS estimated that more than 122,000 people in Australia experienced homelessness at the time of the Census.

Males accounted for 55.9 per cent of this cohort, while females accounted for 44.1 per cent. Around 23 per cent of all people experiencing homelessness were aged between 12 and 24 years.

The ABS acknowledged this data may have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions.

A man wears a navy shirt and fluorescent yellow vest. He has a white lanyard and card around his neck.

Heidi Tucker is the CEO of Anchor, which supports people experiencing, or are at risk of homelessness. She said the Census provides “precious evidence”, but believes it can be challenging to capture accurate data on homelessness, particularly in vast urban areas or in regional and rural Australia.

For regions like the Yarra Ranges in Victoria, this means locating people across more than 2,400 square kilometres, much of which is bushland.

“Not everyone who is experiencing homelessness is known to a service. We’re worried that there will be people who are missed.

“We know that young people in particular can be couch surfing or living in scenarios associated with homelessness.”

Monsoon Shifts Reveal Hidden Secrets in Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson Neighborhood Search

0

TUCSON, Ariz. — In a recent development, a neighbor of Nancy Guthrie reported seeing FBI agents searching the brush behind the home of the missing 84-year-old. This sighting comes just as the case is about to hit its six-month anniversary without resolution.

Despite statements from a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department denying any recent investigative activities by the task force in the area, the neighbor insists on recognizing agents from previous law enforcement operations linked to this case. As of now, the FBI has not provided any comments regarding their reported presence.

Residing merely a few houses away, the neighbor observed the officials methodically searching through the rugged desert terrain.

Authorities believe that Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, was forcibly taken from her home during the early morning hours of February 1.

Bob Krygier, a retired Pima County Sheriff’s Department lieutenant and former SWAT commander, said there are a few reasons why investigators would return to the area, ranging from new leads to the chance that evidence has been shifted around by recent weather.

“There’s a couple of different reasons that go through my mind first is going to be they got some leads, they got some new tips that are viable, and they’re out there looking for something specific or in an area specific to that, because I’m certain that they’ve searched those areas already,” he told News Media.

It could also be that, six months into the investigation, authorities are putting a fresh set of eyes on the case, he said.

And heavy rains may also have altered the landscape, potentially exposing or moving evidence investigators hadn’t previously seen, he said.

“About a month ago, monsoon season started here in Tucson and a lot of water has come down — a lot of water at once, and it pushes things,” he said. “So it’s moved the environment. Rocks have been pushed away.”

Depending on the area, floodwaters can rise from just a few inches to as much as 12 feet, Krygier said, with enough force to sweep away vehicles, trees, rocks and even people.

“I’m not sure if they found him yet, but there was a report of a man in the wash floating down, being pushed downstream by the water — and the Santa Cruz is what that feeds into, which is, you’re looking at 20, 30 feet deep when it’s at its peak and 50, 60 feet across,” he said. “All that water, it’s rushing fast, and it’s taken not only the people, but it’s taken cars, it’s taken trees, branches, rocks, all of this stuff, and basically turned into a big blender.”

Authorities did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told News Media last week that investigators are still following up on active leads, reviewing “tens of thousands” of videos and do not consider the case cold.

On Friday, his office also released a pair of purported ransom notes in the case, in the hope that someone in the public can help identify the sender’s “unique linguistic style.”

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call 1-800-CALL-FBI. Tipsters can remain anonymous by calling 520-88-CRIME.

The combined sum of rewards in the case is over $1.2 million and remains unclaimed.

California Man Opens Up About Spark That Ignited Devastating Gann Fire

0

A man taken into custody for allegedly igniting the colossal Gann Fire in Calaveras County claims that his intentions were noble. He reportedly was seeking to earn some cash for a special birthday dinner for his wife when the incident spiraled out of control.

Herbert Wayne Smith, a 65-year-old resident of Spring Valleys, recounted using a saw to cut through metal scraps. His plan was to sell these scraps to fund the birthday celebration planned for Monday. Unfortunately, this endeavor inadvertently sparked a wildfire that ravaged more than 10,000 acres.

Lamenting over the unintended consequences, Smith shared his distress in an interview with KCRA. “This is going to destroy my life, one way or another,” he confessed, acknowledging the gravity of his actions.

“I’m so sorry for everything that’s happened. That was never my intent. I was just out there trying to get some money together, and it turned into this,” Smith explained, his remorse evident.

Officials have charged Smith with negligent operation of the equipment. He failed to clear the surrounding flammable vegetation and did not have appropriate firefighting tools at the ready, a critical oversight given the dry conditions of the area.

“The investigation revealed Smith was operating equipment capable of producing sparks in vegetation without complying with the fire prevention requirements of California Public Resources Code,” Cal Fire said in a statement following Smith’s arrest.

As of Wednesday afternoon, criminal charges against Smith had not yet been filed in Calaveras Superior Court. Cal Fire submitted its investigation to the Calaveras District Attorney’s Office for review and potential prosecution.

The fire led to both evacuation orders and warnings in the area, with homes and property threatened by the growing blaze. The aggressive fire surged over days as triple-digit temperatures and critically dry fuels hampered firefighting efforts across the parched landscape.

While grueling conditions persist, Cal Fire reported a steady rise in containment, though officials warn that crews remain on high alert with the heatwave slated to last through the weekend.

Expert Insights on Behavioral Concerns in Lindsay Clancy’s Daughter Unveiled by Educator

Breaking:Cora Clancy’s teachers tell court about little girl’s concerning behavior one day before murders

Susan Bertolo was a dedicated educator at the Learning Sprouts preschool, where both Cora and Dawson were enrolled. Her commitment to nurturing young minds was evident in every interaction.

In her role, Susan lovingly managed the ‘Sunflower’ room, welcoming Cora three mornings each week. It was an environment brimming with warmth and creativity, fostering early childhood development.

Cora was often accompanied to school by her parents, Lindsay and Patrick Clancy. While she saw Patrick more frequently during drop-offs, Susan shared this routine with another preschool teacher, creating a caring transition for each child.

Speaking with emotion, Bertolo described Cora as an ‘amazing’ and ‘wonderful’ preschooler who was more than ready to embark on her kindergarten journey. Cora’s brilliance and readiness left a lasting impression.

Recalling the heartwarming moments spent with Cora, her teacher became visibly moved, cherishing the memories of the last day they spent together, filled with learning and joy.

On the morning of January 23, 2023, Cora was dropped off at preschool.

That day, she needed to use the bathroom more than normal, Bertolo said. She noted that she was concerned because this was out of the ordinary for the child, and told another teacher.

When she told Clancy at pickup, she said she had a doctor’s appointment for Cora the next day.

The five-year-old was complaining that her tummy hurt and didn’t want to get up from her nap, her second teacher of the day, Stephanie Williams, told the court.

Williams told Clancy this when she picked her daughter up that afternoon.

Instead of Cora getting up and meeting her mom at the door to the classroom – as the children normally do – Clancy had to walk into the room and gently coax the girl to leave.

Clancy scooped up the little girl from her cot, saying to her: ‘Oh baby, come on let’s go get Dawson and we’ll go home.’

When asked if she noticed anything different about Clancy that day – or any day – she said: She was just a very loving mother who cared very much for her children.’

Mysterious Figure Reported Near Massachusetts Mansion in Affluent Neighborhood

0

In the affluent suburbs just outside Boston, Massachusetts, a masked prowler has been spotted on surveillance footage, causing concern among residents.

Captured by security cameras, the individual dressed in a bicycle helmet was seen wandering the grounds of a Weston home between 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 2. Now, the Weston Police Department is calling on the community to assist in getting to the bottom of this “suspicious incident.”

Authorities have confirmed that the person did not enter the residence, but their presence on private property during the late hours raises alarms.

“Considering the situation, we suspect the individual’s intentions were likely not lawful,” the police stated.

Known for its ultra-premium real estate market and proximity to Boston, Weston, Massachusetts, stands as one of the most exclusive and expensive towns in the state. Police say the figure appeared to come from a nearby trail and approached the Highland Street house with a flashlight.

In one of the images shared by the department, the person appears to be shining a flashlight at the home’s three-car garage.

In another instance, investigators say it looks like the suspicious man is carrying a hunting chair he picked up from the house to the woods. Another image showed him wearing a bicycle helmet.

Weston Police Chief Denis Linehan called the scene deeply concerning, telling CBS Boston, “It’s creepy, there is no doubt about it.”

“Anytime you have someone on somebody else’s property masked, I don’t care what time of day it is, that is concerning, and then you add the factor that it is three in the morning, and he was on that property for an extended period of time, we’re overly concerned.”

The suspicious behavior is causing authorities to ask nearby residents to check their home surveillance or doorbell camera footage from those early morning hours.

“Even footage showing someone walking, riding a bicycle, or leaving the area could be helpful to our investigation,” they said.

Anyone with information or video that may assist is asked to contact the Weston Police Department at (781) 786-6200.

Minnie Driver Embraces Life After Surviving Serious Car Crash

0

Minnie Driver recently experienced a harrowing car accident while traveling in France, an incident she described as “really bad.”

On Thursday, the “Emily in Paris” actress took to Instagram to share the unsettling news with her followers. Wearing a neck brace, she expressed her gratitude for surviving the ordeal, saying she is “grateful to be alive.”

At 56, Driver recounted the frightening crash, recounting the details of how it unfolded. “I got into a really bad car accident a few days ago with my friend Ben,” she explained. “We somehow managed to walk away from it. Well, we didn’t exactly walk — we crawled out. But the important part is, we survived.”

Driver was clear in stating that the T-bone accident, which occurred on an “old country road,” was not a result of her actions.

According to Driver, “A car failed to stop at an intersection and was speeding, leading us to T-bone it,” she remarked. “Thankfully, I’m okay, though I have a sprained neck.”

“I’m really in a sort of shock and cry all the time but I’m gonna heal,” she continued. “The reason that I’m not dead honestly is the car that we were driving.”

She gave an emotional shoutout to the “little tiny Kia” with its 360-degree airbags, saying, “The fact that the entire car didn’t just crush us is down to the design of that car which is frankly astonishing.”

Calling herself “Minnie Driver, pun intended,” the Emmy nominee gushed, “I need to celebrate the car that saved us because we’ve got families and people who love us. … So, Kia, you are a baller car company. You’re amazing. And thanks very much.”

In her caption, Driver raved over “the van driver who stopped and helped … before ambulances arrived.”

She also made “special mention of the car who slowed down took in the scene and drove off without stopping.”

The “Borderline” star concluded, “I guess this is the Dao of the world, the light and the dark. My brain keeps replaying the crash which is very hard but seems to be a necessary part of processing. Weeping too, feels good and helpful.”

Driver’s loved ones shared their support in the comments section, wishing her a “speedy recovery.”

The “Speechless” alum has been documenting her Paris trip on social media all summer long.

“Eat a crêpe, go for a walk,” she captioned an Instagram video of herself eating a pastry full of “lemon and sugar, as God intended.”

She wrote, “People shouldn’t be scared of carbs. They’re lovely. … Life is horribly, horribly short.”

Serial Rapist Captured After 20 Years Eluding Police

0

A former doctor, who allegedly assaulted multiple women on luxury yachts in Rhode Island, has finally been captured after more than two decades in hiding, all due to one careless blunder.

Last month, Ronald Fischer was tracked down in New York, living under a false identity, after his new employment revealed his photo online.

Fischer, now 70, vanished in 2005 before his trial concluded for an assault on Cheryl Gingerich, a college professor and mother of four, which occurred two years before.

In an ironic turn of events, investigators suggest Fischer’s audacious move to revive his medical career became his downfall. He secured a high-profile position with a pharmaceutical company, inadvertently drawing attention to himself.

A photo of the former anesthesiologist was posted online by Immix Biopharma to announce his new role, which led someone to tip off the FBI, culminating in his arrest.

The agency alerted local law enforcement and officers intercepted Fischer aboard his $1.4 million custom-built boat, the Silver Lining, in New Jersey, under the guise of a routine stop by the Coast Guard.

At the time, he was living under the identity of Richard Graydon, a self-styled master sailor at the Liberty Yacht Club.

Investigators who searched his East Greenwich home later found a trove of documents and plans for switching identities and evading capture.

Fischer is accused of luring Gingerich aboard his sailboat, the Lion King, under the pretense of asking her to help him clean it during a date before he pushed her onto a bed and raped her, according to court testimony reviewed by the Boston Globe.

The former anesthesiologist was awaiting the verdict when he fled, telling his daughters he was leaving the country. He was ultimately found guilty in absentia but never sentenced as he could not be found.

Now aged 70, Fischer appeared in court last week without an attorney, where a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf regarding a bail-jumping charge, the Boston Globe reports.

He was remanded in custody after being deemed a flight risk.

‘I was happy to think when I woke up, I thought, I slept last night in my bed and Ronald Fischer slept last night in a jail,’ Gingerich told NBC 10. ‘That made me, I’m sorry to say it, but truthfully it made me happy.’

Elden DaSilva, supervisory deputy US marshal for the District of Rhode Island, told the Globe: ‘People return to their passions and their behaviors when they feel it’s safe to do so and that’s what he did.’

Fischer’s capture ended two decades as a fugitive. His fall from grace began back in 1994, when Fischer was accused of a separate rape of a woman aboard another boat called the Dreammaker.

The 25-year-old alleged victim told the police she had met Fischer for a date aboard the vessel in Quincy Bay, which quickly spiraled when she refused to have sex with him, court records show.

The woman claimed Fischer choked her into submission before pulling her jeans off and raping her.

She told investigators that he eventually allowed her to go above deck after she promised she would not fight back anymore and she took her opportunity to escape. The alleged victim then ran naked to a nearby boat where the occupants dialed 911, according to court testimony.

Fischer ultimately saw the charges downgraded and pleaded guilty to assault and battery at his trial in 1996, after the woman declined to testify. He did not end up serving any jail time.

Several years later, another woman claimed she was raped by a man going by the name ‘Kevin’ aboard his boat, the Lion King, following a date at a marina bar in Newport, Rhode Island.

The alleged victim told the Boston Globe she now recognizes the man from the assault as Fischer, using an alias.

However, it was not until 2003, when Fischer was accused of raping Gingerich, that he wound up in court.

Fearing the outcome of the trial, Fischer packed up his things and fled his old life. He was found guilty of the attack in absentia after failing to turn up to his trial in Newport.

He had his medical license revoked in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Investigators searching for Fischer noted that he had purchased a flight to London before his disappearance, which he then canceled. His ex-wife also told the authorities that Fischer had friends in Brazil.

However, in the years between his conviction and his arrest last month, Fischer had taken up a new identity as Richard Graydon, at one point living in New York City.

He obtained a lucrative position as chief medical officer at a biotech company which ultimately led to his capture after the company published a press release hailing their new hire

Following a stint with a failed weight-loss company, Fischer fabricated his resume to convince prospective employers he was a board-certified hematologist-oncologist, which enabled him to secure a lucrative career in the biotech industry, the Boston Globe reports.

He became a member of the volunteer-run Liberty Yacht Club where he entered races and was pictured at various social events.

This included a gala in April of this year, where Fischer was snapped beaming at the camera.

But despite his impunity, cracks were beginning to show in Fischer’s facade.

Members of his crew have since told the Boston Globe that he was known for having an explosive temper and could often be heard shouting at his team so aggressively it was audible from nearby vessels.

Paul Elkouss, a crew member aboard the Silver Lining in 2024 and 2025, told the outlet that Fischer’s temper and poor management ultimately hindered any of his delusions of being a successful yachtsman.

Fischer’s web of lies finally collapsed after he stepped into the role of chief medical officer with the Los Angeles pharmaceutical company.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission seen by the Daily Mail, Immix said: ‘Richard Graydon has been terminated and is no longer with the company for reasons unrelated to his activities at the company.

‘Given his short tenure, management believes there is no material effect on the business.’

Bird Flu Crisis: Are Free-Range Eggs at Risk of Disappearing?

0

While the egg industry has so far sidestepped direct impacts from the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak, precautionary efforts to prevent the virus’s spread may significantly impact free-range egg production.

In South Australia, the latest surge in H5N1 cases has raised alarms about its potential threat to both the wild bird populations and commercial poultry operations.

Rowan McMonnies, managing director of Australian Eggs, highlighted that the industry is now navigating a more hazardous operational landscape for the foreseeable future.

He noted that the virus’s presence in Australia’s wildlife signals that H5 avian influenza has established itself as a persistent challenge for the medium term.

According to McMonnies, total eradication of the virus seems improbable, but the industry has been preparing for such an outbreak scenario for several years.

“Important actions are being taken to address the risks. Strict biosecurity is being maintained with enhanced measures to deter wild birds and limit crossover into egg farms,” he said.

“The industry has also worked closely with authorities to improve response processes based on overseas learnings so that where farms are impacted, they can bounce back faster, limiting any impact on egg supply.”

Since 2018, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has enforced the standard that for an egg product to be considered free range it must be laid by hens that have meaningful and regular access to outdoor range during daylight, are able to roam and forage in a stocking density of 10,000 hens or less per hectare, and that the density be displayed on produced products.

However, as of July, the ACCC confirmed it won’t take enforcement action for breaches of free-range egg labelling standards due to farms choosing to house birds inside for biosecurity reasons.

‘Confine birds to sheds’

Limiting free-range environments is a biosecurity measure many chicken farms are using.

“The advice is to confine birds to sheds,” microbiologist and food safety expert Associate Professor Julian Cox told SBS News.

“Birds of free-ranging pick up the virus and interact — potentially spreading it to noncommercial species …. or wild birds in the vicinity could bring it into commercial poultry that are free-ranging,” he explained.

Cox said it’s a measure anyone who owns and cares for poultry should consider.

“If you’ve got some kind of coop, lock them in the coop. It’s for their own good.”

Russia: Poultry farm in Russia's Transbaikal Region

What could an outbreak mean for food safety and security?

Cox, who also serves as the scientific director of the Food Safety Information Council, said if an outbreak does occur in a commercial facility, there are processes that would be implemented to restrict its impact.

“If we start to see any sign of illness in birds …. what is likely to happen is that that flock will be destroyed, the birds will be culled,” he said.

If an outbreak occurs in a region with many commercial facilities, Cox said it’s likely all birds in the “entire area” will be culled.

He said it’s a similar method to a “firebreak for bushfires”.

Cox said that if a major outbreak were to occur, the “worst-case scenario” would be that thousands of birds would be culled, causing a significant supply drop in meat and eggs.

“Cleaning and restocking can take some weeks … four to five months before flocks are replaced and producing eggs – minimum for six weeks for meat chickens,” he said.

“There would be a lag in the market before we got back to the normal level of production, and that relies on the confidence that all traces of the virus are gone.”

As Australia faces potential further outbreaks of bird flu, Cox reiterates that poultry meat and eggs are safe for human consumption.

“Ingesting food is not a mechanism for transmission … it’s really about interacting with live animals,” he said.

“Our food chain is so long from primary production through to purchase and consumption that it’s likely that any [sick] flocks of egg-producing birds or meat birds are going to be culled before they get anywhere near the consumer.

“We’re simply just not going to see the flu coming into our households through the purchasing of food.”

Inside Man City’s Post-Guardiola Masterplan: Maresca and Viana’s Vision with Four Pillar Players and Midfield Overhaul

A notable surge in efforts to secure the future of Manchester City’s roster took center stage this summer, as evidenced by Jeremy Doku’s recent commitment to a new five-year agreement with the club.

Doku’s contract renewal follows on the heels of new deals for Josko Gvardiol, Phil Foden, and Abdukodir Khusanov over the past two weeks. This talented quartet is positioned as the vanguard of a fresh chapter for the City squad, one that envisions a future lacking both Pep Guardiola’s iconic leadership and many of the veteran players whose names have become synonymous with the team’s repeated triumphs.

Gvardiol and Doku, standout figures from last season, are just 24 years old, while Foden is 26, and Khusanov stands at 22. The club hopes these four talents will form the cornerstone of this transitional era for Manchester City.

Currently, navigating the demands at the pinnacle of football could hardly be more daunting—especially if Rodri makes a much-speculated move back to Spain, with both Barcelona and Real Madrid reportedly vying for his signature.

Should the World Cup’s top midfielder indeed depart, Manchester City’s leadership core would be slashed by half in a matter of months, underscoring a concerning gap in seasoned expertise—a point Maresca tactfully highlighted amidst a hot week in Seoul.

Gvardiol and Foden have both publicly raised their hands to take roles in the captaincy team and there is jostling behind the scenes between players who want to make their mark under a fresh regime – one that ought to offer some of them renewed energy.

Nico Gonzalez, who failed to start a single league game between January and May, insisted that he is one of them.

‘I’m happy here,’ said Gonzalez, who joined for £50million 18 months ago. ‘I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. If we win, I’m happy. My dream is to win trophies.

‘If I don’t play any matches and we win the Champions League next year, I will be so happy. The final of the FA Cup I was not picked but we won so it was an amazing day for me. To be honest, last season I couldn’t have expected to have played almost 30 matches in the starting XI. I played really good. I’ve had many opportunities.’

Gonzalez – who didn’t even make the bench for that FA Cup final he referenced – does have his price but it has become clearer in recent days that Tijjani Reijnders is more likely to exit the building before the window closes. Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United are monitoring the Dutchman, valued at £55million.

Be it Rodri or Reijnders or both, City sources have indicated that they are ready to replace any potential outgoings. The pursuit of Ayyoub Bouaddi, a breakout talent at the World Cup with Morocco, is a separate entity and they are pressing ahead with negotiations with Lille regardless of movements in the other direction.

They had accelerated the rebuild in January, spending £85million on Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi, with the two signings from Bournemouth and Crystal Palace embedded into the squad then rather than now – which ought to represent something of an advantage moving forward.

Semenyo contributed to two trophy wins – scoring the FA Cup-winning goal over Chelsea – while Guehi was ineligible to feature in the Carabao Cup final, a decision that riled Guardiola.

City believe the strategy of doing those deals six months early, and supplementing it by breaking their transfer record with £116million Elliot Anderson once Maresca assumed the post, will reap its rewards.

‘I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches,’ Gonzalez added. ‘We are one of the best teams in the world and obviously there is competition in every position. That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything.’

Gonzalez is talking about a different squad though. He’s never won a title. Only five of this group were around for the Treble, revealing quite how much rebuilding has gone on in the three seasons since.

City have spent much of the last two years planning for this moment, for life after Guardiola, and now the time has come to determine how meticulous that has been.
