NBC News Takes Action: Security Guard Fired After Intruder’s Racial Slur Shocks ‘Today’ Show

NBC News has terminated a security guard in the wake of a shocking security lapse that allowed an intruder to gain access to the “Today” show studio, according to exclusive information obtained by Page Six.

The alarming incident unfolded when an unauthorized individual, reportedly in search of Al Roker, breached the studio and approached host Craig Melvin last Thursday morning.

Insiders reveal that security footage captured the presence of two guards at the time of the incident. The video reportedly shows one guard stepping away from their post, while the remaining guard failed to notice the intruder slipping into the studio unnoticed.

While it remains unclear which of the two guards was ultimately dismissed, sources indicate that the decision to let him go saddened many of the show’s staff, as he was regarded as a friendly and familiar face within the studio premises.

A representative for the “Today” show has declined to issue any comments on the matter.

Page Six confirmed earlier that the intruder slipped past security at the NBC show’s New York City headquarters and asked Melvin, 47, for Roker, 71, after being unable to find him.

The maniac got as far as the staircase inside the studio when he approached Melvin, but our sources confirmed he did not enter the actual filming studio.

After Melvin called security, the man was detained and arrested.

The New York Police Department confirmed to Page Six that the man, identified as Andrew Truelove, was booked on a slew of charges including hate crime menacing, hate crime burglary, hate crime criminal trespass and harassment charges after being arrested earlier in the day.

The Post confirmed via cops and sources that the 41-year-old man called Melvin the N-word during the incident, which happened right before 9 a.m.

Melvin took to Instagram after the incident to let his fans know he was OK, writing, “Hey everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I’m doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out.”

He also shared he was not taking time off after the scary confrontation.

“I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow,” he wrote.

The “Today” show also shared a statement regarding the incident, noting they were “reviewing the incident and our security protocols.”

“TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter,” the statement read. “NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously.”

The program added that they’re “committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.”

Arrest Made Months After Tragic College Canoe Trip Incident, Lone Survivor in Custody

0

In a tragic late-night escapade, a young man’s life was cut short during a canoeing trip, leaving the sole survivor to face serious allegations. Authorities have charged him, pointing to alcohol consumption before the fateful journey.

Michael Collins, a 20-year-old from Mineola, New York, finds himself at the center of legal troubles after the Connecticut environmental police charged him with operating a boat under the influence. The incident in question led to the drowning of Dominick Tocci, also 20, hailing from Woodstock, Connecticut, in March.

According to investigators, Collins and Tocci had been imbibing with several friends before they decided to set out on a canoe adventure on Lake Hayward in East Haddam on the night of March 21.

Tragedy struck swiftly when their canoe overturned, plunging both young men into the frigid waters and sealing their fate.

Tocci disappeared beneath the surface, sparking a massive search involving the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s (DEEP) Environmental Conservation Police, Connecticut State Police drone and dive teams, local fire departments and other emergency responders.

After a multi-day search, crews recovered Tocci’s body from Lake Hayward the afternoon of March 23. Months later, EnCon Police sought an arrest warrant, alleging Collins had been operating the canoe while under the influence.

Collins turned himself in to EnCon Police on July 10, and he was arrested and charged with operating a boat under the influence. He was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear in court July 23.

Authorities have not announced any additional criminal charges in Tocci’s death.

News of Tocci’s death devastated his hometown of Woodstock, where friends, coaches and former teammates remembered the 20-year-old as a talented athlete whose larger-than-life personality left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

“We are so heartbroken at the loss of my stepson, Dominick, please keep us in your prayers,” a woman identifying herself on social media as Tocci’s stepmother wrote at the time of his death. “Such an amazing kid and will be missed forever.”

Woodstock Little League, which Tocci played before graduating from the program in 2018, remembered him as “a bright and gregarious spirit” who “brought energy, laughter and kindness to everyone he met.”

“Dom was a beloved teammate and the type of kid that every coach would want in their dugout,” the league wrote. “Dom’s personality, warmth and enthusiasm touched everyone that he knew. Our hearts go out to his mom Lisa, his brother Vincent, his sister Antoinette and the rest of Dom’s family. Rest in peace, Dominick. You will be missed, but never forgotten.”

According to Tocci’s obituary, memorial donations were directed to youth baseball programs across Woodstock in his honor.

The arrest comes just weeks after DEEP launched Operation Dry Water, a nationwide enforcement campaign targeting boating under the influence over the Fourth of July holiday.

The agency noted that alcohol remains the leading known contributing factor in recreational boating deaths and reminded boaters that, under a Connecticut law that took effect in October 2025, a boating under the influence conviction can also result in the suspension of a person’s driver’s license.

“Every boater has a responsibility to help keep Connecticut’s waterways safe,” DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes said in a statement announcing the campaign. “If you’re operating a boat this holiday weekend, stay sober, wear a life jacket, and make smart decisions that protect your passengers and everyone else on the water.”

News Media reached out to DEEP’s Environmental Conservation Police for additional information. It was not immediately clear whether Collins has retained an attorney.

Buster Posey Caught Off Guard as Hot Mic Blunder Sparks Interview Chaos

0

Buster Posey, Giants’ president of baseball operations, has been making headlines recently, not just for the team’s disappointing performance but also due to a controversy surrounding the organization’s Pride Night.

However, as the uproar over these issues has begun to settle, Posey finds himself facing criticism once more.

During an appearance on the “Murph & Markus” show on KNBR, Posey participated in what initially seemed to be a routine 25-minute interview, until things took an unexpected turn.

In the segment that followed, hosts Brian Murphy and Markus Boucher delved into Posey’s answers concerning the MLB draft and the Giants’ picks. Meanwhile, a KNBR producer inadvertently became part of the broadcast, testing the microphone’s audio quality.

As the airwaves opened up, the producer could be heard repeating the word “talk” several times before affirming, “Yeah, I hear ya, I gotcha. I gotcha 100%.”

The producer then unknowingly gave his honest opinion on Posey.

“Posey sucks, man,” he said.

Neither Murphy nor Markus visibly reacted to the hot mic moment, but a caller on the next segment of the show referred to the incident. The show’s hosts attempted to glaze over it but concluded by saying they would investigate behind the scenes.

The YouTube broadcast of the show has since been deleted.

The Giants’ disastrous season has been a frequent topic of conversation as the team stood at 41-55 before the All-Star break, ranking 24th in runs per game and 22nd in ERA.

While the nightmarish year doesn’t boil down to one person, Posey has been the face of much criticism. The latest incident doesn’t bode well for the public perception of the Giants executive, but it’s evidently a reflection of the fan base’s feelings toward the team’s performance in 2026.

Trump Alleges Massive Breach: China Accessed 220M American Voter Files

0

In a provocative primetime speech from the White House, Donald Trump claimed that China had accessed 220 million American voter records, describing it as the largest act of election interference in history.

Trump further implicated Venezuela in efforts to sway U.S. elections and accused the ‘deep state’ of orchestrating a massive cover-up, reiterating his prior fraud claims regarding his 2020 election defeat to Joe Biden.

Some Republicans expressed their dismay over the President’s revisiting of old election controversies, suggesting that this backward focus might not bode well for garnering future support as they near the midterm elections.

The President asserted that China’s initiative marked a historical breach, allowing them unauthorized access to scores of U.S. voter files.

He elaborated, stating the compromised data encompassed names, addresses, phone numbers, party affiliations, and more. Trump accused a Chinese “data exploitation unit” of orchestrating this massive data breach.

‘This data loss presents an unprecedented election security nightmare.’

No evidence of voting machine insecurity or fraud in the 2020 election has been established. Trump’s claims have come under heightened scrutiny; some major broadcast networks like ABC and NBC refused to carry his remarks live.

‘In a rare move, NBC and ABC fake news have both said that they would not cover this speech,’ Trump stated. ‘They know how corrupt our system is and … They and others in the media are part of a plot.’

A March 2021 US intelligence report assessed that China did not deploy interference efforts. It also concluded that Beijing considered but did not deploy influence operations on the 2020 election.

‘US Spy agencies began learning about the compromise of voter registration files in 2020 when they discovered that tens of millions of voter data, think of that, tens of millions voters’ data in 18 states have been bought, stolen or hacked by China,’ Trump alleged.

Trump claimed that China wanted him to lose the 2020 election. ‘I was wise to them, charged them billions and billions of dollars worth of tariffs,’ Trump said of his first term.

He also announced the release of hundreds of previously classified files about US elections.

Referencing newly declassified files, Trump said that some documents reveal ‘that members of the deep state’ worked to ‘actively suppress and downplay information about the extent of China’s sinister election rally.’

Referring to another newly released CIA report, Trump said the Nicolas Maduro regime developed methods to digitally alter vote totals in ways that could not be detected, even with an audit, no matter how deep they went.’

The 2021 report also claims that though ex-Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro may have wanted to sway US public opinion against Trump during the 2020 election, he lacked the ability to do so.

The President has maintained for the better part of a decade that he won the 2020 election against Joe Biden.

‘The 2020 election was not stolen. We won, and he lost,’ former Vice President Kamala Harris posted on X Thursday night.

The administration has been investigating the circumstances of Trump’s 2020 loss, including the seizure of election records in Fulton County, Georgia, the hotly contested area around Atlanta.

The President’s fresh allegations about the 2020 election had his MAGA supporters in an uproar about the alleged plot against the Republican.

‘This may be the most important Oval Office address since the Cuban Missile Crisis,’ Ohio Republican Senator Bernie Moreno wrote on X. ‘The time for complacency with China is over.’

Meanwhile, Democrats bemoaned the address as a tireless rehashing of the Republican’s longstanding gripes and that his claims lacked evidence.

Beyond the White House, a significant portion of Republicans believe the 2020 election was ‘stolen.’

According to an April Reuters poll, nearly two in three Republicans (63 percent) agree that the 2020 contest was stolen from Trump via election fraud.

One in five (21 percent) independents agreed, while just 9 percent of Democrats also said the 2020 election was taken from Trump.

'Data in 18 states have been bought, stolen or hacked by China,' Trump alleged

‘Data in 18 states have been bought, stolen or hacked by China,’ Trump alleged

The speech comes amid the backdrop of the administration’s efforts to have the Senate pass the SAVE America Act.

If passed, the measure implements election reforms such as requiring proof of US citizenship to register or update voter registrations for federal elections.

It also would mandate the removal of noncitizens from voter rolls and force states to check federal databases to see if voters are allowed to cast ballots.

The measure has passed the House but has been stalled in the Senate, where it would need 60 votes to pass, including support from a handful of Senate Democrats.

Critics say the bill establishes barriers preventing eligible voters from casting ballots, while proponents argue it secures the electoral process.

The White House announced the address on Monday but gave few details about what the special event would focus on.

The following day, the President teased, ‘What we’re going to talk about Thursday, it doesn’t get bigger because without free and fair elections, you don’t have a country.’

‘We’ll be discussing other things too, but it’s going to be a very big announcement’

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt Thursday said that the US ‘Should have the safest and most secure elections in the history of the world … and what the President will be speaking about tonight will show you that perhaps that is not the case.’

Certain broadcasters were concerned about the speech; ABC and NBC chose to stream the remarks as opposed to broadcasting them on their networks.

Open Heaven 17 July 2026 – Deliverance From Marital Burdens

Open Heaven 17 July 2026 Friday Daily Devotional By Pastor E. A. Adeboye – Deliverance From Marital Burdens

Open Heaven 17 July 2026 TOPIC – Deliverance From Marital Burdens

MEMORISE: He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.– Psalm 46:9 (KJV)

READ: John 2:1-11 (KJV)

1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Isaiah 9-11

Open Heaven 17 July 2026 MESSAGE

Today, I will discuss marital burdens as another category of burdens. Satan hates everything God has created, including the institution of marriage. This is why he always tries to disrupt the holy matrimony between a man and a woman. Sometimes, he focuses on keeping a man and a woman from ever getting married, and at other times, he visits a husband and his wife with different problems that will keep them from enjoying peace and rest in their home.

Today’s Bible reading tells us about a wedding in Cana of Galilee. The bridegroom must have thought that everything that was needed for the wedding had been provided. However, they suddenly ran out of wine. I am sure that they felt ashamed until the Almighty God intervened.

1 Samuel 1:1-20 tells us the story of Hannah, who was barren. Her adversary mocked her daily, and as a result, her life became unbearable. She didn’t plan to be barren, but barrenness came nonetheless, and there was nothing she could do about it. The Burden Bearer stepped into her situation, however, and she gave birth to six children, among whom was the renowned prophet, Samuel.

Sarah was also under the yoke of barrenness until the Burden Bearer visited her and her husband in Genesis 18:1-6. Before the Burden Bearer intervened in their marital situation, Sarah had been barren for decades, which was why she laughed when she heard that she would give birth to a son the following year. If you have been looking for the fruit of the womb and have lost hope that you will ever carry your own child, I want you to know that the Burden Bearer is also the hope of the hopeless, and He will surprise you. In the name that is above every other name, I decree that every barren woman who is reading this devotional will sing for joy soon.

Beloved, there is no marital challenge that the power of God cannot subdue. The Lord can command peace to reign where there is chaos and disunity, and He can still the storm in any marriage. If you are married and are currently experiencing any storm in your marriage, I pray that the Burden Bearer will step into your marriage now and cause you to sing a new song, in Jesus’ name. Also, if you are of marriageable age and are yet to be married, I decree that the Almighty God will settle you maritally with a godly spouse, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven 17 July 2026 HYMN 10 – In Christ Alone

1 In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

2 In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless Babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live, I live

3 There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For l am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

4 No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From a life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Could ever pluck me from His hand
‘Til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I stand

Rhapsody Of Realities 17 July 2026: Bring Your Body Under Subjection

Rhapsody Of Realities 17 July 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): Bring Your Body Under Subjection

TOPIC: Bring Your Body Under Subjection (Rhapsody of Realities 17 July 2026)

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service (Romans 12:1).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

Having understood that your spirit is the Most Holy Place and must take the lead, with your soul trained to follow, there’s one more vital area to address: your body. Your body doesn’t automatically align with the life of God in your spirit; it must be brought under control.

That’s why the Word says, “…present your bodies a living sacrifice…” (Romans 12:1). God has done His part in recreating your spirit but the yielding of your body, presenting it to Him as a living sacrifice, is your responsibility. The Apostle Paul gives further insight: “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection…” (1 Corinthians 9:27).

This means the body must be disciplined and trained to align with your spirit. The body has its tendencies; it responds to sensations, appetites and external stimuli. It wants to act based on what it feels. But you’re a spirit being, not a body; you live in a body. Therefore, you can’t let your senses rule you. The Bible says, “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die…” (Romans 8:13).

To live after the flesh is to be governed by the body and its impulses, but that’s not your life. You live by the Spirit, and as the concluding part of Romans 8:13 declares, “…if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” That means through the Holy Ghost, you put to death the activities of the body, override its impulses, and bring it into alignment with God’s will and purpose.

This isn’t suppression; it’s mastery. Your spirit, one with the Holy Spirit and filled with the life of God, takes charge. Your soul, renewed by the Word, agrees. Then your body is brought into obedience. This is the complete order of the Christian life: spirit, soul and body in alignment with the Word of God.

Don’t let your body dictate your life or control your responses. Whether it’s weakness, appetite, or any form of pressure; take charge from your spirit. Present your body to God. Make it serve His purpose. If you feel symptoms of sickness, declare, “No! My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit; therefore, it’s immune to sickness, disease and infirmities.” Refuse to allow sickness in your body; it’s part of keeping your body aligned and yielded to God.

PRAYER

Dear Father, I thank you for your life and glory in me. My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and I present it as a living sacrifice, bringing it under subjection to your will and ways. I refuse to be governed by the senses or natural impulses. I walk in sync with the Spirit, aligned with your perfect will at all times, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

FURTHER STUDY

1 Corinthians 9:27 (AMPC)
But [like a boxer] I buffet my body [handle it roughly, discipline it by hardships] and subdue it, for fear that after proclaiming to others the Gospel and things pertaining to it, I myself should become unfit [not stand the test, be unapproved and rejected as a counterfeit].

Romans 8:12-13 (NIV)
Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. [13] For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

Galatians 5:24-25 (KJV)
And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. [25] If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Canadian National Faces Backlash After Slapping Teen Over Political Attire, DHS Reports

0

A recently unveiled video captures the fiery moment when a Canadian woman, embroiled in controversy for allegedly overstaying her visa, reportedly slapped a teenage girl. The altercation erupted on a New Jersey boardwalk as the woman confronted a group of friends clad in attire featuring “Trump” and “ICE” slogans. In the aftermath, she was apprehended and placed in federal immigration custody.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released this footage on Thursday through a post on the platform X. They labeled Kaitlyn Tracey, the woman in question, as a “Maple Leaf Menace,” confirming her current detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as removal proceedings are initiated.

“This illegal alien who assaulted a teenager has no business being in our country,” DHS stated emphatically.

The video depicts Tracey confronting the teen, reaching out, and delivering a slap before casually walking away without hesitation or further interaction.

According to a DHS spokesperson, Tracey entered the U.S. on April 14, 2024, with a visa that was valid until September 6, 2024. However, she remained in the country beyond the expiration date.

A Canadian woman accused of overstaying her visa was taken into ICE custody after allegedly slapping a teen over pro-Trump and ICE clothing on a New Jersey boardwalk. (U.S. Department of Homeland Security)

“She overstayed her visa and failed to depart,” the spokesperson said, adding Tracey’s name to the “nearly 70% of ICE arrests” netting illegal immigrants who have been charged with or convicted of a crime.

According to DHS, the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department facilitated a controlled transfer into ICE custody following her arrest, where she will remain pending immigration proceedings.

A man identifying himself on social media as Tracey’s husband, Matthew Geroni, disputed the allegations in an interview with NJ.com, arguing the incident had been blown out of proportion after drawing widespread attention online.

“This whole situation has been blown out of proportion and a person like Kate does not belong in any facility,” Geroni told the outlet. “My wife has never been in trouble in her entire life. She’s never had any kind of situation like this. This one little situation that was really a nothingburger when it happened has been blown so out of control by conservatives online that it has caused my wife to be put in a detention center.”

According to the probable cause affidavit obtained by News Media, the victim told police she and three friends were walking along the boardwalk when Tracey began verbally berating the group over clothing they were wearing.

The affidavit states two of the victim’s friends were wearing patriotic-colored sweatpants displaying the words “Trump” and “ICE.” Investigators allege Tracey then approached the victim and struck her once in the face and once in the body.

Officers attempted to stop Tracey, but she refused to identify herself and continued down the boardwalk, according to the affidavit.

Investigators later identified her through social media and passport information she provided when entering the United States from Canada in 2024.

Geroni also posted several emotional videos to social media after Tracey’s arrest, saying he was trying to find an immigration attorney and pleading for help.

“I need help. I don’t know what to do,” he said in one video. “I need an immigration lawyer… I need my wife.”

Geroni also said he created a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for Tracey’s legal defense and immigration costs before it was removed from the platform. Before it was taken down, the fundraiser said it had been organized by friends to help cover Tracey’s legal expenses and immigration-related costs.

In another video, Geroni claimed the campaign was removed after what he described as a coordinated mass-reporting campaign by a “Facebook group of MAGA supporters.”

A GoFundMe spokesperson disputed that claim, telling News Media the fundraiser was removed because it violated the platform’s policies.

“GoFundMe’s Terms of Service prohibit fundraisers for the legal defense of violent crimes,” the spokesperson said. “Consistent with this long-standing policy, the fundraiser was removed from the platform and fully refunded.”

The case also drew reaction on Capitol Hill after DHS released the surveillance video Thursday.

“Oh, Canada. She’s headed back your way!” Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., wrote on X. “Thank you, @SecMullinDHS!”

Francis R. Hodgson, Tracey’s attorney, declined to comment when reached by News Media. Court records show Tracey is scheduled to appear in Ocean County Superior Court on Aug. 4.

Tropical Storm Elida Threatens Southern California with Menacing Ocean Swells

0

Beach enthusiasts in Southern California might find themselves facing turbulent waters soon, as Tropical Storm Elida gains momentum. Transforming into a hurricane, the storm is set to unleash formidable ocean swells that will crash against the region’s shores.

Elida, which emerged in the middle of July, is currently whirling several hundred miles southwest of Los Cabos. Meteorologists predict that by Friday, it will escalate to a Category 1 hurricane.

Although Elida will stay far from the coast, experts caution that it will still send massive, churning waves racing towards the beaches of San Diego County.

The National Weather Service is diligently monitoring the storm as it tracks off the southern tip of Baja California. The storm is curving northwest over the Pacific, where environmental conditions are likely to enhance its rapid strengthening.

Even though Elida will not directly hit land, its increasing intensity is anticipated to significantly affect Southern California’s coast, resulting in hazardous surf conditions and tumultuous seas.

“Elida is expected to become a hurricane Thursday night or early Friday before reaching its peak intensity on Friday,” the NWS said in a social media post.

As of Thursday, Elida is carrying sustained winds of 50 mph. It will officially be classified as a Category 1 hurricane if its winds reach between 74 and 95 mph.

Storm Elida formed in the Pacific Ocean posed no threat to land Wednesday, forecasters said.

The last tropical storm to have a major impact on Southern California was Tropical Storm Hilary in August 2023. The once-in-a-generation soaking brought record-breaking rainfall, triggered widespread flash flooding, and washed out roads.

The rare tropical storm—the first to hit the region in decades—forced evacuations, stranded motorists and served as a stark reminder that even weakening Pacific hurricanes can pack a devastating punch.

Inferno Skies: Wildfire Smoke Casts Shadow Over Globe’s Biggest Soccer Stage

As wildfires rage on, a crisis brews across Canada and parts of the United States, urging residents to remain indoors. The fires are not only wreaking havoc on the environment but are also plummeting air quality, casting a shadow over regions where the FIFA World Cup final is slated for early next week.

Canadian officials report a staggering 110 fires spiraling out of control, with more than 700 additional blazes flaring in secluded locations. These fires spare major urban centers but have devastated 1.9 million hectares of land, edging closer to smaller towns and leading to evacuation orders being issued.

The infernos have sent smoke billowing into the sky, dimming horizons in Ontario and northeastern US. Authorities in both nations have responded by canceling public gatherings and issuing health advisories to safeguard citizens.

In Toronto, the nation’s largest city, residents awoke to an eerie orange haze obscuring the skyline, a stark reminder of the fires’ reach.

In response, officials have taken drastic measures, including shutting public swimming pools, halting summer programs, and cancelling the much-anticipated FIFA Fan Festival. This cancellation coincides with the World Cup semi-final clash scheduled between England and Argentina.

On Thursday, Swiss firm IQAir said the Canadian city recorded the worst air quality of any major city in the world, beating New Delhi and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital Kinshasa.

People look out from glass windows as smoke from wildfires blankets the city.

Nearby, New York City’s air quality ranked fifth-worst in the world. Authorities there have warned residents they “may see visible smoke and hazy skies across the state and spikes in smoke-related pollution”.

The US National Weather Service said the smoke could linger into the end of the week.

“We probably haven’t seen the worst of it yet for New York City. We probably haven’t seen the worst of it yet for the Great Lakes and upstate and New England yet either,” Dan Westervelt, Lamont associate research professor at Columbia University, told Reuters news agency.

The smoke settled on the city just days before neighbouring New Jersey is scheduled to host 80,000 people at an open-air stadium for the World Cup final on Monday morning AEST.

Another 50,000 are planning to watch the game from Manhattan’s Central Park.

Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire have all experienced worsened air quality.

The fires burn against the backdrop of a record-smashing North American heatwave, which has seen temperatures soar into the 40s in parts.

While significant, Canadian authorities say the current fire season has been significantly less dangerous than those that ravaged the country in 2023, when 18 million hectares burned.

Maine Shooting Incident Sparks Scrutiny on ICE’s Swift Hiring Practices

WASHINGTON – In a sweeping move to bolster its ranks, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has embarked on a large-scale recruitment drive, hiring thousands of officers. This expansion comes as part of the broader immigration enforcement strategy under the Trump administration, aiming to increase arrests and deportations significantly.

Fueled by a substantial allocation of funds from Congress — amounting to billions of dollars — ICE’s rapid growth has sparked questions about its recruitment practices. There’s a rising concern over whether new officers undergo thorough background checks. The Department of Homeland Security, however, has dismissed these apprehensions as unfounded.

Family members of an ICE officer involved in the recent shooting of a Colombian man in Maine revealed to The Associated Press that the officer grappled with severe mental health challenges since childhood. They argue that he was unsuitable to carry a badge and weapon while patrolling U.S. streets.

The specifics of how the officer, identified as David Brouillette, came to be hired remain uncertain. Nonetheless, these revelations cast a critical eye on ICE’s recruitment surge amidst the Trump administration’s vigorous immigration enforcement measures.

Let’s delve into the current hiring and training protocols implemented by the agency:

A surge in new hires at ICE

In January, Homeland Security said it had hired 12,000 new officers and agents since the hiring surge began and said thousands of those new officers were already out on the streets assisting with investigations. The number includes both deportation officers and agents for Homeland Security Investigations, a separate agency that falls under ICE.

ICE has said the majority of new hires are police and military veterans. But evidence has been mounting that applicants with questionable histories were either not fully vetted before they were brought on or were hired in spite of their past, an investigation by The Associated Press earlier this year found.

At the time, Homeland Security, ICE’s parent agency, would not answer questions about specific hiring decisions. It did say some applicants received “tentative selection letters” and offers to begin working on a temporary status before they had been subjected to full background checks.

It defended its hiring practices, saying it does rigorous vetting.

ICE’s former acting director, Todd Lyons, said during a congressional hearing in February that he was proud of the hiring campaign, which drew more than 220,000 applications.

“This expansion of a well-trained and well-vetted workforce will help further ICE’s ability to execute the president’s and secretary’s bold agenda,” he said.

The vetting process includes reviewing applicants’ criminal histories and credit scores and conducting background investigations that include interviewing prior employers and other associates, which can take weeks. ICE also promised signing bonuses of up to $50,000, advertised that college degrees were not required and lowered the age of new recruits to 18.

An internal memo, first reported by Reuters in February, told ICE supervisors that if they receive “derogatory information about a newly hired employee’s conduct” they should refer the allegations to an internal affairs unit for investigation. Such information could include the employees’ termination or forced resignations, the memo said.

The DHS inspector general last August announced plans to audit ICE’s hiring and training processes, but no findings have been released.

Applicants have to get a security clearance

Recent job advertisements for deportation officers spell out the current qualifications, including that the person must be a U.S. citizen to apply and will have to pass a background investigation and a drug test.

New deportation officers also have to take a physical fitness test and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Once hired, new deportation officers may have to serve a one-year probationary period.

According to the job advertisement, deportation officers are required to carry a firearm, which means anyone convicted of domestic violence is ruled out.

Applicants undergo a medical exam and should be prepared to possibly be polygraphed. The application cautions that any false statements on the application can translate into the job offer being pulled or, if the person has already started work, they can lose their job or go to prison.

The background investigation can include a credit check, reviews of any financial problems like failure to pay child support or taxes and a look at the person’s criminal and drug history.

Claire Trickler-McNulty, a former ICE official under the Obama, first Trump and Biden administrations, said hiring a new deportation officer is similar to any other federal hiring.

Generally, applications are reviewed by a hiring manager who decides which candidates to advance. Once someone gets a tentative offer, the agency conducts a background check.

When people are applying for jobs that involve getting a security clearance, Trickler-McNulty said, they have to disclose on their application any drug use, interactions with police, groups they’re affiliated with, mental health concerns, prior addresses and job history.

Depending on the clearance level, they’ll also ask for references that a background investigator will contact. If there’s red flag such as a DUI or a history of debt, that can trigger a deeper investigation.

“You want to make sure the person is appropriate for a public trust position,” she said.

Concerns over changes to ICE training schedule

Generally, new candidates for deportation officer positions have to go through a 50-day immigration law enforcement training program, according to the job advertisement.

Ryan Schwank, a former lawyer at ICE who was responsible for training new deportation officers, told The Associated Press that the agency reduced the overall amount of training new recruits received and reduced the testing needed to pass before graduating. Homeland Security has denied that it has removed any training requirements or lessened requirements for officers.

Trickler-McNulty said she has concerns over reports the agency shortened training as it was aiming to hire thousands of new officers. ICE officials revamped the training as part of efforts to swiftly hire and train an additional 10,000 deportation officers with an infusion of billions of dollars last summer from Congress.

At the time, the agency had about 6,500 deportation officers. That led to allegations that the department was cutting corners in an effort to get more officers in the field, which Homeland Security and ICE repeatedly denied.

In June, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the agency would be increasing the amount of training for new officers starting this month, from 42 days to 72 days.
