Tragic Loss: 24-Year-Old Student Dies After Remote Dental Treatment, Lawsuit Filed

0

A rising dental student tragically passed away following medical treatment allegedly administered by a doctor not physically present, as claimed in a $15 million lawsuit filed by his grieving father.

Conor James Hylton, aged 26 and a resident of New Haven, Connecticut, died on August 15, 2024, at the Milford Campus of Bridgeport Hospital.

The lawsuit, filed by his father William H Hylton, alleges that Conor’s medical care during his final hours was dictated by a physician positioned 12 miles away at Yale New Haven Health’s tele-clinic.

William, accompanied by his wife Betsy Hylton, hurried to the ICU just an hour before Conor’s passing. The couple claims they witnessed medical staff battling to save their son while receiving directives from a man appearing on a screen, as detailed in the lawsuit.

“We saw the whole thing unfold,” William recounted to the Free Press. He described watching the individual on the screen managing the entire procedure remotely, instructing the nurses and others present.

‘And you know, at first, it doesn’t maybe hit you, but then you start thinking, so this guy on the TV is really running the show here.’

His lawsuit alleges that Conor’s death was ‘a direct result of the negligence of Bridgeport Hospital, Yale New Haven Hospital Inc.’

The suit takes aim at the medics involved in Conor’s care, claiming they failed to effectively communicate as they tried to save his life – something which was exacerbated by the remote working setup, according to the filing.

The Daily Mail has contacted each defendant named in the lawsuit.

Yale New Haven Health previously told reporters that it ‘is aware of this lawsuit and is committed to providing the safest and highest quality of care possible; however, we are unable to comment on pending litigation’.

Conor’s nightmare began at 11am on August 14, when he arrived at the Bridgeport hospital after vomiting all day and being unable to keep his food down.

He had low blood pressure, EKG results suggesting heart rhythm problems, and elevated heart and respiratory rates.

His clinical record also noted a history of alcohol abuse, and within hours, doctors diagnosed him with conditions related to alcohol withdrawal, including dehydration, pancreatitis, and metabolic acidosis.

Conor was given medication and a hospital bed. His parents went home at 7pm, believing he was stable and in good hands, but his condition rapidly deteriorated overnight.

‘At approximately 4.30am, Mr Hylton slid down in bed, his eyes rolled back and he became unresponsive and exhibited seizure-like activity,’ the lawsuit reads.

Conor began vomiting blood and his heartrate dropped. Medics intubated him and attempted to perform life-saving measures, but he died just after 6am.

The lawsuit claims that efforts to save him and his pronouncement of death were ‘erroneously attributed to Dr. Denu in the medical record, but in reality, Dr. Denu did nothing and the pronouncement was done by a “tele-health” provider on a video screen.’

Dr Denu was the hospitalist overseeing the hospital on the night Conor died, but she told investigators she did not see ICU patients because they were seen by ICU tele-physicians instead, according to the Free Press. She is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit launched by Conor’s father accuses the hospital of giving his son ‘substandard care,’ saying the medics present for his final moments exhibited ‘extremely poor communication.’

The lawsuit also claims that no physicians saw Conor in person while he was in the ICU ‘for hours’, and that his parents were not notified that his condition had deteriorated until he was almost dead.

His father, William, 63, said that he chose to take his son to the Bridgeport Hospital believing it would provide the best care.

‘I took him to Milford because it’s a little smaller than Yale New Haven, but it’s still a Yale facility,’ he told the Free Press. ‘We thought it might be quicker.’

William said he and his wife left the hospital at about 7pm on August 14, believing their son simply needed rehydration, which he would receive overnight.

They planned to return the next day with Conor’s two younger brothers, but were instead woken by a phone call from the hospital at 4.45am.

An ICU medic told the family that Conor was undergoing CPR and they would need to get to the hospital immediately.

William said his son had been in the ICU for almost five hours at this point, but nobody had notified them until was too late.

By the time they arrived, he said Conor ‘was, basically, for all intents and purposes, already dead.’

Qualifying as a dentist was Conor's 'life long dream', according to his online obituary

Qualifying as a dentist was Conor’s ‘life long dream’, according to his online obituary

The family attorney, Joel Faxon, said Conor essentially received care in a ‘fake ICU.’

‘You can’t delegate the responsibility for intensive care to somebody on a screen,’ Faxon told the Free Press.

‘I mean, it’s called intensive care for a reason. And this is why I say this is a fake ICU.’

Following in the footsteps of his parents who are both dentists, Conor was a promising student at the UConn School of Dental Medicine.

He studied his undergraduate degree at the University of Connecticut, and was a student athlete during his high school years at Notre Dame.

‘His gifted athleticism led him to play Irish football at the New Haven Gaelic Football Club and to receive his black belt in Taekwondo,’ his obituary reads.

Qualifying as a dentist was his ‘life long dream,’ according to the tribute.

His father’s lawsuit requests $15 million in economic and emotional damages.

The Daily Mail has contacted Bridgeport Hospital, Yale New Haven Hospital, and Northeast Medical Group for comment.

Mike Phillips Ascends to Unity Christian Head Coach: A New Era for Boys’ Basketball

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Unity Christian High School is set to promote from within to fill its head boys basketball coach position. This transition follows Felipe Phillips’s recent move to take on the coaching role at Mt. Zion.

The newly appointed head coach brings nearly 20 years of experience from various assistant coaching roles throughout the Decatur area. This position marks his first as a head coach.

In describing his approach to coaching, he shared the following insights:

“I bring energy, excitement, and a set of high expectations to my coaching style,” said Phillips. “While I am demanding, I aim to be known as a player’s coach. My focus is on ensuring the kids enjoy the game while developing respect for and understanding what is expected of them. Once they gain confidence, everything else tends to fall into place. The intricacies of the game—those are my responsibility.”

Unity Christian’s Lions team is riding high from a historic 2025-26 season, where they advanced to a sectional game for the very first time, achieving an impressive 31-4 record.

He also played college basketball for two years at Wabash Valley, where he earned NJCAA All-American honors, followed by two seasons at Wichita State.

England vs Argentina Semi-Final Live: FIFA World Cup Score Updates and Reactions

England’s coach, Thomas Tuchel, recently shared his thoughts with the BBC, shedding light on the team’s recent performance.

“Our feelings are mixed with disappointment. We came incredibly close, but after finding the net, our play became overly passive, leading to numerous opportunities for the opposition,” Tuchel admitted.

A middle-aged white balding man with his arms crossed

He further explained, “Our ball possession was lacking, causing us to face a barrage of crosses, chances, and attempts on goal.”

“We stood on the brink of success but failed to maintain our performance level post the goal,” he added.

Critics have started to question Tuchel’s tactics. English football icon, Wayne Rooney, pointed out that England’s strategy was overly defensive, noting they did not push for a second goal following the first.

But Tuchel said England was going for a second, they just couldn’t get their feet onto the ball.

“We couldn’t win any balls, we couldn’t keep the ball, so I think it was not a structural problem. We changed nothing. But the match changed completely,” he said.

He also defended his decision to switch to a back-five.

“We conceded [a chance] straight away and we decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open,” he said.

“They won every header, they kept crossing and crossing so we went to a back five to close the gaps inside and be strong in the air.

“Straight after our goal, without any substitutions, we conceded way too many crosses and way too many chances, so we tried to help.

“Of course, the responsibility is on the coach and if it doesn’t go well, it is easy to say it was wrong.”

US Unemployment Claims Drop to 10-Week Low, Boosting Economic Optimism

WASHINGTON – In an encouraging sign for the U.S. economy, layoffs remain exceptionally low as weekly unemployment benefit applications shrank to their smallest number in ten weeks.

Last week, the Labor Department revealed that applications for jobless aid in the week ending July 11 decreased by 8,000, reaching 208,000. This figure significantly undercuts the 219,000 claims that analysts, referencing FactSet data, anticipated.

Considered an immediate reflection of the job market’s state, weekly unemployment benefit claims have become a crucial measure of economic stability and layoffs.

To smooth out the fluctuations, the four-week rolling average of jobless claims dipped by 4,750, settling at 214,250.

In a similarly positive trend, the total American workforce seeking unemployment aid during the week concluding on July 4 fell by 16,000, reaching a historically strong number of 1.81 million.

Intoxicated Driver Plunges Into Pool, Strikes Swimmers in Startling Crash

Jeep into pool

A driver, allegedly under the influence, crashed her Jeep into the pool at Smuggler’s Notch Resort in Cambridge, Vermont. (WPTZ).

In a dramatic and unsettling incident, a New Jersey woman, said to be driving while intoxicated, drove a Jeep through a fence and directly into a pool at a Vermont resort. The alarming crash prompted swimmers, including children, to urgently escape from the water’s path.

The unnerving event unfolded around 3:30 p.m. Monday at Smuggler’s Notch Resort in Cambridge, according to the Vermont State Police. The woman behind the wheel, whose identity is currently withheld due to “the age of the individuals involved,” faces charges including driving under the influence, reckless or gross negligence, and two counts of reckless endangerment, as reported by local NBC affiliate WPTZ.

Police reports indicate that the woman plowed into the fence encircling the pool area before the vehicle made its way into the water, further heightening the chaos of the scene.

The pool was packed with swimmers. Two people suffered minor injuries, troopers said. One of them was 9-year-old Joseph Sage.

“I just heard a bang and a car went there,” Joseph said in an interview with WPTZ. “It hit my head and pulled me under.”

Photos obtained by the TV station showed the Jeep submerged in the pool. A towing company used a crane to lift the Jeep out of the water.

The woman reportedly failed several sobriety tests at the scene of the crash and was arrested. She pleaded not guilty to all the charges during a court hearing on Wednesday. She faces two years in prison for each of the DUI and negligent conduct charges, plus a year for the reckless driving charge, per WPTZ.

A judge barred her from driving and drinking alcohol. Her next court date was not listed.

Smuggler’s Notch, 30 miles northeast of Burlington, is known for its ski resort, but has several water activities for the summer.

Lucky Episode 1 Recap: Conman Faces Unexpected Turn of Fate

A man tries to soothe a woman’s unease by insisting that the toughest part is behind them and that everything will be smooth sailing from here. Whether or not he mentioned it’s all “gravy,” his reassurance falls flat as the audience’s focus shifts to the woman, whose apprehension is palpable right from the start of Lucky.

In the Apple TV series Lucky, Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the role of Luciana “Lucky” Armstrong, led by Jonathan Tropper and Cassie Pappas, known for their respective works on Your Friends & Neighbors, Silo, and Griselda. Produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, the show draws from Marissa Stapley’s bestseller, which also featured as a Reese’s Book Club favorite. With Taylor-Joy at the helm, this character is certainly one worth betting on.

Lucky isn’t portrayed as purely virtuous — no one is, really. It was clear from the onset that her husband Cary Masterson, played by Drew Starkey, had betrayal in mind, casting him as the more villainous figure. His assurances ring hollow as Lucky soon finds herself fleeing through Las Vegas, shedding her identity with each step.

The circumstances remain murky. Upon waking groggy, possibly from more than just champagne, in their shared hotel suite, Lucky finds Cary and their cash-loaded suitcases vanished. Though Cary claimed success, her intuition warned otherwise — a voice echoing her father John Armstrong’s (played by Timothy Olyphant) cautionary words, a man steeped in crime himself and now residing in a federal prison. Lucky’s path, deeply entwined with crime, looked destined for change with Cary but alas, the fates had other plans.

As Cary escapes, Lucky finds herself pursued by FBI agent Billie Rand, portrayed by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. Although Rand’s character seems upright, the viewer’s allegiance lies firmly with Lucky, partly due to the underdog appeal of a criminal wronged by another. With quick wit, Lucky swipes a Caesars badge and jacket, weaves through casino kitchens, and employs makeup mastery to fabricate a bruised face, crafting a convincing tale of an abusive partner to secure a getaway.

Lucky, Timothy Olyphant

Apple

There will be flashbacks in Lucky, and we meet John Armstrong in an early one. “There’s something I need you to move for me. For us,” he says to Lucky in the visitor’s area at Lompoc prison. She groans, because in not so many words, this is her dad the flim-flam man saying he skimmed some chocolate off someone else’s cake. We assume the cash from the roller cases is that skim. And now that it is missing, whoever has the rest of the cake will be hunting down Lucky.

Which brings us to Priscilla Masterson. This is Annette Bening, continuing the fine work she brought to Dutton Ranch as Beulah Jackson, and as Priscilla she is the kind of moneyed, unscrupulous operator who has assets to burn and no history of taking no for answer. “So you got played?” Priscilla demands of Lucky once she and her chief henchman Harris Dutch (Clifton Collins, Jr.) catch up to her. “That’s your story?” Cary Masterson is Priscilla’s son, making Lucky Armstrong her daughter-in-law. But that doesn’t stop her from stuffing Lucky in a trunk to be delivered for further questioning.

Delivered to whom? Priscilla has enough willingness to T-bone a federal agent with her goon-chauffeured SUV to indicate she is in a power position. But how powerful? In this criminal world, there is a hiearchy, and she is only searching for Lucky and the money so Priscilla can deliver it to another, bigger interested party. “You can imagine what’s going to happen to you and John if he doesn’t get it back,” she says. So whatever the identity of the big boss is in this scenario, he is able to reach inside a federal prison and pluck the feathers of whoever. That is real power.

Lucky being up against dangerous people like this only makes us believe more in her ability to “run the board,” in John’s words. Having managed to evade Agent Rand and the feds, but captured by Priscilla and Dutch, Lucky flashes her father’s lucky Zippo inside the trunk where she rides. She spies road flares, pockets a screwdriver, and gains access through the backseat to the car’s interior. The goons driving her to Priscilla’s are oblivious. Lucky lights the road flare, unleashes a series of wild kicks, and there is some shooting before the driver starts on fire and collides with a cactus. Chaos in the desert! We’re not sure Lucky thought this escape all the way through. But it’s a better play for this criminal than waiting to be killed by other criminals.

Scratch-Offs for Lucky Episode 1 (“No Shortcuts”):

  • Cary did say one interesting thing, back before he sold Lucky out and stole the loot. “America’s over, anyway,” he said, suggesting the criminal spaces where these people operate are mirrors for straight world rot.

  • We think it’s kind of hilarious that someone who looks like Anya Taylor-Joy can walk through a police search cordon un-hindered and avoid hundreds of casino security cameras simply by putting her hood up.

  • There are also jams to give rhythm to Lucky’s life on the run. The phantasia of her night of Las Vegas double-crossss is soundtracked by Roy Orbison with “In Dreams.” Lucky escapes the clutches of goons to the haunting “Lost” by Zola Jesus. And as she wanders across scalded desert land, Sleater-Kinney is heard with “Hunt You Down.” It’s a stark reminder of the stakes.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Film Price Sparks Frenzy Among Fans: $19.89

Taylor Swift’s devoted fanbase has expressed outrage over the pricing of her Eras tour film, currently set at $19.89 for a mere 48-hour rental.

At 33, the pop sensation finds herself under fire, with many accusing her of further capitalizing on opportunities to increase her wealth. Critics argue she should offer the film for free, pointing out her billionaire status.

With her incredibly triumphant Eras tour, the “Style” singer saw her net worth soar to an impressive $1.1 billion just last month, according to Forbes.

Some fans have also taken issue with the rental-only option, expressing disappointment that the concert film isn’t available for purchase or included in any subscription streaming services.

Among the numerous voices on social media, one fan tweeted, “I’m sorry, but it seems like she’s getting a bit money-hungry. Charging $20 for a one-time viewing when she’s already a billionaire doesn’t sit right.”

Another penned: ‘Why wouldn’t she make it free. She’s a billionaire & we’ve already paid to see it in movies.’

A third penned: ‘She is really finding a way to get every single dollar she can get out of this. renting is crazy.’

‘Capitalist queen for real,’ another wrote.

One more agreed: ‘Enough with the cash grabs girl. You have like a billion dollars. Releasing every CD with 8 different versions was already too much but this just feels egregious. Just let it stream or let people straight up buy it. This feels icky.’

Someone else said: ‘I’m kinda tired of her releasing one thing and then different versions of it later. I want to buy the thing and that’s it, I know I’ve gotten the complete item. Not dribs and drabs of it.’

Another fan replied to that Tweet saying: ‘The general vibe is that people are unimpressed by this blatant cash grab.’

Others pointed out that Taylor had withheld three songs from the movie theater release of her concert film that would now be available in the rented version.

Therefore even if fans had paid to see the film in the theater they have to pay again if they want to watch these additional performances.

Currently boasting over 108 million monthly listeners on the streaming platform, the Enchanted singer previously bagged the UK top spot in 2022.

This year has been another very successful year for the pop superstar, who has been estimated to have generated nearly $5bn in consumer spending alone in the US leg of her Eras Tour.

Only two UK artist joined Taylor in the top five most streamed artist in the UK, with Drake and The Weeknd both landed second and third respectively.

Spotify Wrapped 2023 sums up how 574M people around the world listened to the streaming giant this year.

The brand unveiled that Arctic Monkeys and Ed Sheeran squeezed their way into the fourth and fifth UK spot.

But it was not only in the UK that Taylor bagged the most-listened-to crown – she also came out on top internationally.

It was the first time in three years the Bad Bunny was not been the most listened to artist globally.

But the Puerto Rican rapper did land second place, having released 2023 most streamed album – Un Verano Sin Ti – raking in a whopping 4.5 billion streams since January 1.

Coming in third was the Weeknd, whose album – Starboy – was the fourth most streamed of the year globally, despite being released in 2016.

The Weeknd was followed by Drake, Peso Pluma, Feild and Travis Scott, who launched his highly-anticipated album Utopia in July.

The eight most streamed artist globally was SZA, who rocked the R&B genre with her critically acclaimed album SOS.

SOS, which included a roster of hits such as Kill Bill, Snooze and Good Days, was the third highest streamed album on Spotify internationally.

Following SZA in ninth and tenth place is Karol G and Summertime Sadness crooner Lana Del Rey.

Swift also had major success with two songs, which both landed in Spotify’s top ten most streamed songs globally.

Both her 2016 single Cruel Summer and her 2022 hit-song Anti-Hero placed sixth and tenth on the list.

Nabbing the crown for 2023’s most listened to song in world was Flowers by Miley Cyrus, with more than 1.6 billion listens since January 1.

Blue Angels Investigate Low Flyover Near Florida Beaches

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. — In a dazzling display over the pristine sands of Pensacola Beach, a jet from the U.S. Navy’s legendary Blue Angels aerobatics team performed a maneuver that has now prompted an internal review. Onlookers were stunned Wednesday morning as the aircraft flew exceptionally low, sparking a buzz on social media about the unexpected aerial close-up.

According to an official statement, the thrilling flight was part of an arrival maneuver. However, it deviated from the planned trajectory, resulting in a much lower-than-usual flyover, which sent beachgoers’ chairs and umbrellas flapping in its wake. This dramatic display has been characterized by the team as a “low-altitude pass.”

The incident took place during the much-anticipated “Breakfast with the Blues” event, as reported by North Florida’s ABC affiliate, WEAR.

Long-time attendee Ashley Korn, who spoke to WEAR, shared her amazement, saying, “I’ve been coming for 10 years and I’ve never seen a pass like that in my life. I literally thought we were going to be taken out by Blue Angels, but it was amazing.”

In response, the Blue Angels addressed their commitment to safety, emphasizing that the well-being of their local community, the spectators, and their pilots is of utmost importance. Team leaders are currently examining the events surrounding this particular maneuver, ensuring it meets the rigorous safety standards set by both the Navy and the FAA.
