Russell Ready for South Africa Comeback but Faces Future Team Selection Challenges

Finn Russell is gearing up for a return to action against South Africa as Scotland prepares to challenge the reigning world champions in Pretoria this weekend.

However, head coach Gregor Townsend acknowledges that selecting his final team could present a significant challenge, particularly after strong performances by Tom Jordan and Fergus Burke in their recent victory over Argentina.

Russell was absent during Scotland’s thrilling 47-38 triumph in Cordoba, which marked a sensational start to their Nations Championship campaign.

With Russell away, Jordan took the starting position at fly-half against Los Pumas, while Burke made a notable impact coming off the bench.

Townsend’s squad dazzled by scoring seven tries, clinching a bonus-point victory that propelled Scotland back to fifth place in the world rankings.

The assumption was that Russell would come straight back into the team, but Townsend feels there is now genuine competition in the most important position in the team.

Asked whether Russell is 100 per cent, the Scotland head coach replied: ‘Yeah, he should be. He has been training well, both at the end of last week and now here in South Africa.

‘The guys who weren’t involved did a session on Saturday after the team run and he’s trained fine again since then.

‘I think he’s definitely over the calf injury. He may have been fit at the weekend had we really needed him.

‘We just felt that he needed more training to really be available for the tough test matches ahead of us, especially this one this weekend.

‘The depth at 10 is very, very good. We’ve got players who have played for us on a number of occasions.

‘I think of Adam Hastings, who’s not on this tour, and Dan Lancaster, who started for Glasgow over the last few weeks of the season.

‘Then you’ve got Fergus, who showed his class again last weekend. He was arguably the form 10 in England towards the end of last season with Saracen.

‘He came off the bench twice against Argentina and really added to our attack. Tom showed what a competitive Test player he is. That competition is important.

‘If Finn had been available for that game, I’m not sure whether we would have started him.

I think this tour is one that we would have wanted to give opportunities to the other 10s.

‘We’re really encouraged that both Tom and Fergus played at the weekend and played well. Now it makes it interesting for the next two games what we’re going to do in that position.’

Scotland flew to Pretoria immediately after their victory over Argentina on Saturday and have spent the last few days acclimatising.

The game will be played at the iconic Loftus Versfeld stadium, where the altitude invariably plays a big factor.

As they often do, the Springboks named their team early at the start of the week after kicking off with a dominant win over England last Saturday.

Although they are not at full strength, with head coach Rassie Erasmus making ten changes in total, they are still a hugely formidable outfit.

Former World Player of the Year Pieter-Steph du Toit starts in the back row, with Jesse Kriel, Damian Willemse, Canan Moodie and Handre Pollard all in the starting XV.

Facing South Africa on their own patch will be a new experience for the vast majority of the Scotland camp, albeit Russell did it with the Lions in 2021.

Asked about the scale of the challenge, Townsend added: “Absolutely, this is as tough as it gets in world rugby.

‘South Africa are the No 1 team in the world, the back-to-back world champions, so it really doesn’t get any tougher. It’s an iconic stadium as well, which really adds to it.

‘From our perspective, no one in our group has played South Africa for Scotland away from home.

‘It’s a unique opportunity for us, obviously the biggest challenge in world rugby.

‘Having seen how quickly they got into their game against England last weekend, they looked like they’d been playing together for months.

‘They’re a team that knows their identity. I think everybody in world rugby knows their identity and they’re very good at what they do.

‘It’s a great challenge, as you say, a great marker of where we are and where we need to go all in this game.

‘There’s going to be moments, or more than just moments, where the Springboks have the upper hand.

‘We’ve learned from previous experiences, but this is a new one. I can’t wait to see how our players react and how they come together.

‘We’re growing our identity of how we play as a team, but also how we react to incidents in the game, errors, even if things are going our way, so they get another opportunity to do this on Saturday.’

Mitch McConnell Engages in Phone Discussions on Iran, Report Reveals

0

Reports indicate that Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is in good spirits, engaging in conversations over the phone and touching on numerous subjects.

CNN’s Scott Jennings shared that he held a conversation with McConnell, whom he regards as an “old friend,” on Tuesday morning. Their chat spanned close to 20 minutes, addressing an array of topics.

Jennings elaborated, “This morning, I had a conversation with my old friend, Mitch McConnell, the senior Senator from Kentucky, who is still recuperating in the hospital. We conversed for just under 20 minutes, discussing topics such as IRAN, UKRAINE, the ongoing developments in MAINE, my visit to the TR Presidential Library, and even delved into some Senate history.”

Expressing anticipation for McConnell’s return, Jennings remarked, “I told him we’re eager to see him back at work as soon as possible.”

Furthermore, a spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) noted that Thune also engaged in a phone call with McConnell on Monday. The conversation was substantial and included discussions on national security among other significant issues.

These reports veer dramatically from claims made by conservative activist Laura Loomer and journalist Desiree Townsend, both of whom claimed Monday that McConnell had been declared “brain dead,” although they did not provide specific sources. His team responded and adamantly denied the allegations. A spokesperson for McConnell said that on the contrary, the 84-year-old senator continues to improve in the hospital and is working with his staff.

“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital,” the spokesperson told – News. “The Senator continues to improve and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”

McConnell was admitted to the hospital on June 14, but his specific health condition remains largely a mystery. He has suffered from a concussion as well as falls over the past few years and, infamously, had two inexplicable freeze-ups at the podium.

Notably, McConnell’s wife, former U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who has ties to China, traveled to Beijing to meet with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng only three days after her husband was rushed to the hospital, her trip raising eyebrows.

U.S. Conducts Strategic Strikes on Iran Following Hostile Attacks

0

In a significant escalation, the United States resumed its military operations against Iran on Tuesday. This decisive action follows a string of attacks by Tehran on commercial ships navigating the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Amid a worsening ceasefire, US Central Command publicized the commencement of these new strikes, highlighting the fragile nature of the current peace between the two nations.

‘Our forces have initiated a series of potent strikes on Iran designed to impose severe consequences for their attacks on commercial shipping manned by innocent civilians in a key international waterway,’ the statement read, reflecting the gravity of the situation.

The escalation is a direct response to Iranian assaults on three merchant vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz. These acts of aggression from Iran, deemed unwarranted and hazardous, mark a blatant breach of the ceasefire agreement.

A US official disclosed to CNN that these actions are meant as ‘punishment,’ emphasizing that the military response ‘won’t be over for a bit,’ suggesting ongoing operations are in the works.

Meanwhile, the Iranian foreign ministry accused the United States of violating the two countries’ memorandum of understanding and said they have repeatedly violated parts of it.

They said the decision showed ‘bad faith’ and was proof that the Trump administration can’t be trusted and will take ‘any measures’ to defend themselves in a statement obtained by Al Jazeera.

It comes after three tankers were struck by projectiles Tuesday in the Strait of Hormuz, the British military said, and the United States revoked a license that had authorized the sale of Iranian oil as part of an interim deal to end the fighting between the US and Iran.

The new assaults in the fuel-shipping waterway were the most in a single day since late April, according to the UN International Maritime Organization.

The fresh attacks threatened to choke off the flow of traffic in the strait just as countries hoped to restore normal shipping practices and ease the global economic strain of the war.

Hours later, the US revoked the 60-day license issued last month by the Treasury Department that waived sanctions on Iranian oil.

A US official said the license was revoked because Iran’s actions in the strait were unacceptable and needed to be met with consequences.

The Iranian mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

One tanker was traveling off the coast of Oman when it was hit and caught fire, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said.

Iranian state television said the liquefied natural gas tanker came under attack after ignoring warnings but did not directly claim the assault.

The other two ships sustained some damage, but no one was injured, and both continued on their way, the UK maritime agency said.

Tehran, which has repeatedly declared that only its approved route through the strait is safe, is suspected of attacking other ships that have used another route close to the Omani shore.

Location details provided by the UK agency showed that all three attacks occurred off the coast of Oman or the neighboring United Arab Emirates, making it likely that the ships were using the route near Oman.

The US is eager to press ahead with negotiations with Iran aimed at fully reopening the strait, rolling back Tehran’s disputed nuclear program and reaching a permanent end to the war launched February 28. An interim deal has been strained.

Previous attacks in the strait have sparked retaliatory strikes by the U.S. Iran then attacked Gulf Arab states.

In peacetime, a fifth of all traded oil and natural gas passed through the channel.

The license issued by the U.S. authorized the production, delivery and sale of Iranian oil through August 21.

US Vice President JD Vance said at the time that lengthy talks with senior Iranian officials in Switzerland created a ‘good foundation for a successful final deal’ to end the war.

US sanctions on the purchase of Iranian oil had been in place since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

After the US and Israel launched the war, and after the closure of the strait, the US had authorized the temporary sale of Iranian oil at least twice as an incentive toward a deal.

Meanwhile, talks between Iran and the US appeared to be on hold until after the burial of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed at the beginning of the war.

This is a developing story.

Nigel Farage Resigns as UK MP: Impact on UK’s Populist Movement

0

Nigel Farage, the prominent British politician known for his strong anti-immigration stance, has decided to resign from his position as a member of parliament. He made this announcement with plans to enter a snap by-election, a bold move that comes amidst heightened scrutiny surrounding his financial affairs.

This unexpected decision occurs while Farage’s party, Reform UK, is leading in national opinion polls. Meanwhile, he is grappling with increasing criticism over his failure to disclose certain gifts, including those supposedly received from an individual convicted of fraud.

In a televised statement, Farage defended his record by saying, “I’ve decided that the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions.” He was referring to his constituency in southeast England, which he has served for the past two years.

He further emphasized the stakes of this election by describing it as “a people versus the establishment by-election,” reaffirming his intention to be a candidate.

Meanwhile, parliament’s anti-corruption watchdog continues its investigation into Farage. They are examining accusations that the long-time critic of the European Union failed to disclose a substantial donation of £5 million ($9.6 million) from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire involved in cryptocurrency in Thailand.

Farage’s resignation means the probe will be suspended until after the by-election.

But Labour and the Conservative parties have both said they will not field candidates in a by-election, UK media reported.

“Nigel Farage is engulfed in a sleaze scandal, and he’s desperately trying to change the subject,” a Labour spokesperson said.

“It’s pathetic, and the Labour Party is not going to indulge it.”

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said her party would only field a “candidate in the real by-election, which will follow the standards investigation into Nigel Farage’s fishy finances”.

Daniel Greenberg, the parliamentary commissioner for standards, is also facing calls to investigate allegations that George Cottrell, convicted of wire fraud in the United States, paid for security and staff for Farage shortly before he became a member of parliament.

Farage, who helped persuade Britons to vote to leave the EU during a divisive referendum in 2016, was elected an MP on his eighth attempt during the July 2024 general election.

Reform, which advocates mass deportations of illegal migrants and the scrapping of net zero energy targets, has since led the ruling Labour party in opinion polls.

Fears among Labour MPs that Reform could win the next nationwide vote, expected in 2029, ultimately led them to force Prime Minister Keir Starmer to announce his resignation last month.

New MPs are supposed to register any money they received in the 12 months before their election unless it cannot be “reasonably” seen as linked to political activities.

Farage has insisted he did not need to declare the money from Harborne because it was a personal gift to pay for his own security.

‘Political tool’

Cottrell, a 32-year-old crypto entrepreneur from an aristocratic family, pleaded guilty to wire fraud in the United States in 2017 and was jailed for eight months.

Labour and the centrist Liberal Democrats had asked Greenberg to probe the latest allegations.

“I have done nothing wrong. I have not broken the law in any way at all,” Farage said, claiming that parliamentary standards were “now being used as a political tool”.

A spokesperson for Andy Burnham, widely expected to become Labour’s new leader and therefore prime minister later this month, branded Farage’s move “a gimmick designed to distract from serious allegations about Farage’s funders”.

“Ultimately all it does is buy him time,” Tim Bale, a politics professor at Queen Mary University of London, told the Agence France-Presse news agency.

“He’ll probably make it back into parliament, but at that point the investigation will start up again. So he can run, but he can’t hide.”

Clacton is a seaside town in Essex which voted heavily in favour of Brexit. Farage won the seat with a majority of 8,405, and his party has offered to cover the cost of the by-election.

Rupert Lowe, leader of the far-right rival party Restore Britain, who is backed by US tech tycoon Elon Musk, also said his party would not participate in an “unnecessary sham” election.

By-elections usually take place between 25 and 35 days following a resignation.

ICE Reports Officer Fatally Shoots Suspect in Houston Following Car Attack Attempt

0

A man who was living in the U.S. illegally was fatally shot by law enforcement in Houston after reportedly attempting to ram Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers with a vehicle. This incident was confirmed by the agency on Tuesday.

According to an ICE spokesperson, the officers aimed to stop Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, at approximately 6:50 a.m., during a traffic-related operation, as relayed to News Media.

In an effort to evade capture, Araujo allegedly used his vehicle aggressively, attempting to run down an ICE officer, prompting the officer to discharge his firearm in what was described as self-defense.

After being hit, Araujo was rushed to a hospital but did not survive his injuries. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

On July 1, an ICE agent opened fire on an illegal immigrant who also tried ramming a vehicle into authorities, ICE said.

The officers were trying to take Clemente Lara-Hernandez, a Mexican national, into custody when he allegedly tried running into an officer and drove the wrong way on a one-way street before crashing into a civilian vehicle.

An ICE officer fired a shot, but no one appeared to be injured. Lara-Hernandez remains at large.

“Our ICE law enforcement officers are facing a more than 1,300% increase in assaults, a 3,300% increase in vehicular attacks, and an 8,000% increase in death threats against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest the worst of the worst,” ICE said at the time of the shooting.

Judiciary Reacts Sharply to Disturbing Charlie Kirk Assassination Footage in Tyler Robinson Trial

A judge displayed a momentary reaction while viewing the recording of Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

Almost one year on from the murder of the well-known right-wing activist, a preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson, the 23-year-old accused of the crime, commenced on July 6.

In a Provo, Utah, courtroom, Robinson faced Judge Tony Graf, who will decide if the prosecution has enough evidence to proceed with a murder trial.

Judge Graf examined several undisclosed videos from the September 10 shooting at Utah Valley University, reports the Associated Press.

While reviewing a particular video that seemingly captured the fatal moment Kirk was shot in the neck, Judge Graf visibly twitched, deviating from his otherwise steady composure throughout the footage examination, as highlighted in AP’s livestream.

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray revealed charges against Robinson back in September at a press conference, where the prosecutor read alleged text messages retrieved from Robinson’s partner’s phone in which he allegedly confessed to the killing.

Robinson was charged with aggravated murder in connection with Kirk’s death, per TIME, and now if the 23-year-old is convicted, prosecutors will seek the death penalty. He has not entered a plea, AP reported.

Kirk’s widow Erika Kirk and President Donald Trump’s eldest son Donald Trump Jr. were both in attendance at the July 6 hearing, along with Kirk’s parents.

“Every court proceeding serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children,” his wife shared July 6 on X, noting the statement was on behalf of Charlie Kirk’s immediate family. “We remain deeply grateful for the support, prayers, and kindness we have received. This outpouring has sustained us during the darkest days of our lives.”

Mitch McConnell Health Update: Addressing Rumors of ‘Brain Dead’ Status in Washington

0

Despite swirling conjecture that Mitch McConnell is ‘brain dead’ after a recent hospital admission, reports indicate that the Senate Minority Leader is alert and engaging in discussions on various pressing matters, ranging from Iran to a political controversy involving a Senate hopeful from Maine.

GOP political strategist Scott Jennings took to X on Tuesday, sharing, ‘I connected with my longtime friend Mitch McConnell this morning, the senior Senator from Kentucky. He remains hospitalized but is on the mend.’

‘Our conversation, which lasted nearly 20 minutes, spanned topics such as Iran, Ukraine, the brewing trouble in Maine, my recent visit to the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, and a touch of Senate history. I expressed our eagerness to have him back in action soon.’

Senate Majority Leader John Thune also had a ‘lengthy and substantive’ phone call with McConnell on topics including national security on Monday, NOTUS reported.

The 84-year-old was admitted to the hospital on June 14 after an urgent medical situation at his Washington, DC, residence. Emergency responders arrived in response to a report of an unconscious individual suspected of suffering cardiac arrest, with CPR being administered at the scene.

While McConnell’s name wasn’t disclosed in the emergency call, his staff has not specified the cause of his hospitalization, stating only that he is receiving ‘excellent care.’

The speculation surrounding McConnell has intensified in recent days because his aides have refused to release new information regarding his condition or whether he will return to work as the GOP fights to maintain its razor-thin majority.

Trump conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer claimed that an unnamed White House source told her that McConnell is in a ‘vegetative state’ or ‘brain dead’ and is ‘not coming back’ to work.

DC outlet The Hill even accidentally published an obituary-style look back at the senator’s political career, which was swiftly deleted.

Independent journalist Desiréee Townsend claimed that she had confirmed Loomer’s allegations.

‘I have heard the same thing from my sources for days,’ she wrote. ‘At this point, I am at the hospital for when they eventually decide to cut him off of life support and move his body.’

As online chatter continued to grow about the Senator’s health condition, MAGA activists like Breitbart editor Matthew Boyle wrote on X, ‘McConnell’s staff should produce proof of the senator’s condition one way or another right now.’

The popular right-wing influencer, Catturd, demanded his aides post a video of the Kentucky senator from his hospital bed to prove he’s alive: ‘Why won’t they do it?’

‘Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital,’ McConnell’s spokesman told the Daily Mail.

‘The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.’

McConnell’s eldest daughter, Porter, 48, has deleted her X account amid the swirling speculation over her father’s health.

She is an outspoken critic of her father’s conservative politics and a longtime progressive advocate.

It remains unclear exactly when or why she deactivated the account, and there’s no confirmation the move is connected to McConnell’s hospitalization.

If he were to leave office, or prove unable to resume his duties by August 3, Democratic Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear would be required to call a special election to fill the seat.

McConnell has already stated that he does not plan to run for reelection in the upcoming midterm elections.

His absence amid these health struggles places the GOP’s narrow Senate majority in a delicate balance.

Last month, Democrats were briefly able to pass a resolution limiting Trump’s war powers in Iran while McConnell was unable to attend the vote.

Other Republican senators have mostly refused to comment on McConnell’s health condition and have directed concerns to his office.

Utah Senator Mike Lee said on Tuesday that lawmakers are being kept in the dark: ‘Many of us aren’t speaking about Mitch McConnell’s condition because we know nothing about his condition.’

Top 5 TV Series to Stream If You’re a Fan of Curb Your Enthusiasm

Counted among television’s greatest sitcoms, “Seinfeld” set the bar high for comedy. In its wake, co-creator Larry David found himself enjoying unprecedented creative liberty. With this freedom, he ventured into a project similar in spirit to “Seinfeld,” yet offering more room for artistic expression. Transitioning from NBC to HBO, David introduced the world to “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Echoing the “show about nothing” philosophy of “Seinfeld,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” brought David to the screen himself, albeit as an exaggerated version. This series captures David basking in his “Seinfeld” success while grappling with mundane life’s frustrations. His character often bristles at excessive public displays of affection or when individuals flout a store’s policy on free samples. Known for his own set of irrational rules, David’s insistence on these leads to comically awkward situations and misunderstandings.

The brilliance of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” lies in its ability to transform trivial matters into comedic chaos. With two influential comedies to his name, David’s reputation as a comedic mastermind is well-earned. For those seeking similar humor and cringe-worthy moments after devouring all 12 seasons of “Curb,” rest assured, the world of cringe comedy is plentiful and varied.

Seinfeld

After finishing “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Seinfeld” stands out as the quintessential follow-up for any viewer, especially if it’s uncharted territory. Dominating the TV landscape of the 1990s, “Seinfeld” remains uproariously funny today, having marked a shift from the emotionally driven sitcoms of its era to something refreshingly unique.

Renowned for its focus on life’s trivialities, “Seinfeld” was a trailblazer in its time. The characters didn’t undergo life-changing developments, which allowed them to remain delightfully flawed throughout the series. Jerry Seinfeld’s character, for instance, notoriously dismissed romantic prospects over minor issues. A memorable example from Season 6, “The Switch,” showcases Jerry ending things with a partner who, instead of laughing, merely comments, “That’s funny.”

Situations like that serve as essential connective tissue between “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Characters on both shows will obsess over a tiny social faux pas or character flaw and wind up coming across as jerks in the process. Some jokes are just too good and must crossover. On “The Dinner Party” episode of “Seinfeld,” Jerry and Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) complain about getting told “Happy New Year’s” too far away from January 1. Larry complains about the same thing on a Season 10 episode of “Curb” literally titled “Happy New Year.” We suppose there are only so many things to complain about…

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Larry David had two rules on the set of “Seinfeld,” namely no learning and no hugging. It emphasizes how characters shouldn’t learn lessons or grow as people over the years. That carried over into “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and you can see the same DNA in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

It could be considered the modern “Seinfeld” and how it’s effectively about nothing, and after two decades, the core cast of characters remain truly sociopathic. If anything, they’ve only gotten worse over the years, as they’ve been allowed to fester in their own eccentricities and hatred toward the world. A typical “Always Sunny” episode sees the cast trying to scam people or get ahead in life in some way, often through deceit and manipulation. And it always ends up backfiring on them in the end. It’s similar to how Larry on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” will have some deeply held belief, only to have it come back to bite him in the end.

But both shows also have a similar rhythm. A lot of improvisation took place on “Curb.” “Always Sunny” is largely scripted, but with characters constantly talking over one another and arguing, it has a more off-the-cuff feel compared to other, more traditional sitcoms. You don’t watch either show to see the characters grow. If anything, you watch to see how far they can fall.

Veep

Larry David wasn’t the only one who jumped ship to HBO following “Seinfeld.” Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who played Elaine on “Seinfeld,” got to lead her own exceptional comedy series with “Veep.” She plays Selina Meyer, who shared a lot of DNA with Elaine, as they’re both fairly self-absorbed individuals. But in Selina’s case, she just so happens to be the Vice President of the United States, so she tries to emit a certain persona to the public that’s at odds with how she truly feels about the boring day-to-day operations of being a politician.

Selina Meyer is ruthlessly ambitious, serving as a neat contrast to Amy Poehler’s Leslie Knope. Whereas Leslie saw the best in people, Selina is far more pessimistic and narcissistic. She goes against the girlboss archetype and wants power purely for the sake of having power. “Veep” has a deeply cynical outlook on the government, which is perhaps why it’s predicted the future on several occasions, like Selina coming under fire for her emails, which is what would dog Hilary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“Curb Your Enthusiasm” has very low stakes. With “Veep,” Selina and her eccentric team are steering the fate of the country, adding a whole new angle to the cringe comedy.

I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson

Maybe you want a similar cringe comedy vibe to “Curb Your Enthusiasm” without committing to a 30-minute episode. In that case, you need the sketch comedy stylings of “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson.” Each episode is comprised of a few different sketches, so even if one bit doesn’t work for you, you won’t have to wait long to see another.

But the sketch series homes in on reactions to awkward social situations like “Curb.” For example, one of the funniest “I Think You Should Leave” sketches involves a man (Robinson) getting offended that the birthday boy (Steven Yeun) had a muted response to his gift. So in retaliation, he eats the gift receipt. You also have a man (also Robinson) leaving a job interview and accidentally pulling on a push-only door, only to proceed to pull until the door comes off its hinges and opens.

Both “I Think You Should Leave” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” tap into the idea that being perceived as cringe is one of the worst things that can happen to a person. You have characters who insist the world should operate by a certain set of rules, no matter how arbitrary they seem. But “Curb” remains firmly grounded in reality. As a sketch show, “I Think You Should Leave” escalates awkward situations to bizarre extremes, sometimes even getting into horror territory.

I’m Sorry

“I’m Sorry” is basically “Curb Your Enthusiasm” with a female lead (and a central marriage where the two spouses seem to actually like each other). The show follows Andrea Warren (Andrea Savage), a comedy writer navigating the complexities of being a working mom, who has no issues with pointing out the ridiculousness of certain social situations. That includes being handed a live fish as a party favor for a kid’s birthday.

A lot of the comedy comes from Andrea navigating two very different worlds — hanging out with her comedy friends and other mothers. She often misjudges what is and isn’t appropriate to say around non-comedians, leading to plenty of foot-in-mouth situations. It’s just a shame the sitcom got the short end of the stick for coming out right before COVID-19. “I’m Sorry” ran for two seasons and was actually renewed for a third, but following COVID shutdowns, that third season was cancelled.

As such, “I’m Sorry” remains an underseen gem. It doesn’t have the same social cache as something like “Seinfeld,” but if your favorite shows involve a lead character constantly saying the wrong thing, “I’m Sorry” will scratch that itch.

Talladega Resident Receives 10-Year Prison Sentence for Drug Offense

0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A man from Talladega, Alabama, will spend the next decade behind bars after being sentenced for a drug-related offense, U.S. Attorney Phillip Williams Jr. revealed on Tuesday.

Twenty-seven-year-old Isaiah Merritt received a 120-month prison sentence following his guilty plea for possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, an admission he made in February.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service were keeping a watchful eye on the activities in Talladega on April 16, 2024, as part of their mission to locate Merritt. This search followed his 2018 conviction by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama for methamphetamine distribution intentions, which had previously earned him 65 months of prison time plus an additional 120 months of supervised release.

Merritt managed to escape while finishing his sentence at a halfway house. His actions led to an indictment and conviction for escaping custody, resulting in a November 2022 sentence of 16 months in prison, accompanied by 36 months of supervised release.

Due to his failure to keep in touch with his probation officer and document his whereabouts, warrants for Merritt’s arrest were promptly issued.

Mike Waltz Confronts Cuban Delegation with ‘This Is Not Havana’ in Fiery UN Address

0

Cuba’s foreign minister leveled a serious charge against the United States on Tuesday, accusing it of committing an “act of war” through its restrictive policies on fuel shipments to the island. This bold statement elicited a strong rebuttal from U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, who pinned the blame on Cuba’s communist regime for the country’s ongoing issues with blackouts, repression, and economic turmoil.

This heated exchange took place at the U.N. General Assembly, merely a day after a significant failure of Cuba’s national electrical grid. This incident left nearly 10 million residents without electricity, marking the third complete blackout this year and the eighth occurrence since October 2025, as reported by Reuters.

By Tuesday morning, Cuban authorities had managed to restore power in some central areas and parts of Havana. However, according to Reuters, many regions were still without service or were experiencing unstable power supply.

Addressing the assembly, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez accused the Trump administration of waging a “multidimensional, non-conventional war” against Cuba. He claimed this conflict had intensified, becoming even more “cruel and ruthless” over the preceding seven months.

Rodríguez described U.S. efforts to restrict fuel deliveries as the imposition of “an energy collapse, equivalent to a naval blockade, which is an act of war,” according to a UNTV transcript.

Waltz rejected the claim that the United States had established a naval blockade around Cuba.

“There is no ring of Navy warships, U.S. Navy warships sitting around this island blocking trade or humanitarian aid going into Cuba,” Waltz said. “It’s fake. It’s false. It’s a lie. Period.”

Waltz argued that the real embargo was the one Cuba’s government imposed on its own citizens.

“There’s a lot of talk today of an embargo. And indeed there is one,” he said. “It’s the embargo the Cuban regime mercilessly imposes on its own people decade after decade after decade.”

He called on Havana to “change your ways” and “turn the lights back on for your people,” while accusing Cuba’s leaders of ensuring that government compounds and propaganda operations had power even as families worried about spoiled food, hospitals losing electricity and phones running out of charge.

Waltz noted that Tuesday’s meeting came days before the fifth anniversary of the July 11, 2021, demonstrations, when thousands of Cubans took to the streets amid shortages of food, medicine and electricity and demanded greater freedom.

As Waltz spoke, a member of the Cuban delegation pounded on the table, prompting the ambassador to respond.

“This is not Havana. This is the United States of America. This is the United Nations,” Waltz said. “And we will speak, we will be heard, and we will not be silenced like your own people. So, pound away.”

Waltz displayed photographs and read the names of several jailed Cuban artists, musicians and activists, including Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, Maykel Castillo Pérez and Duannis Dabel León Taboada.

“They’re not armed. They’re not violent,” Waltz said. “They carry flowers, and write poems and write music. And for that, the regime beats them, detains them and tries to break them.”

Waltz also said GAESA, Cuba’s military-run conglomerate, controls approximately half of the country’s economy and holds $18 billion in assets.

Reuters has reported that estimates of GAESA’s economic reach range from approximately 40% to 70%, while Cuban officials dispute the U.S. government’s $18 billion figure.

Waltz said that despite Cuba’s blockade claims, humanitarian assistance had recently arrived from countries including China, Russia, Mexico, Canada and Spain, as well as from the European Union and the United Nations.

He also said the United States had provided more than $100 million in aid this year and approximately $500 million annually in commodities.

“The answer is simple: because blaming the United States is the only economic plan Havana has left,” Waltz said of Cuba’s decision to bring the issue before the General Assembly.

Before the wider debate, U.S. Representative for U.N. Management and Reform Jeffrey Bartos objected to reopening the agenda item and called for a vote on whether the proceedings should go forward.

Bartos said the three-hour meeting would cost approximately $84,000, money he argued could instead provide food, emergency medical supplies and solar lanterns to Cuban families.

“Right now, Cuba is in darkness — again,” Bartos said. “I urge the Cuban regime: turn the lights back on for your people.”

Members of the Cuban delegation also interrupted Bartos several times by pounding on the table. Bartos at one point paused and responded, “Keep banging away. It’s very effective,” before continuing his remarks.

Bartos accused Havana of seeking “another propaganda clip” rather than solutions and pointed to what he said were more than 800 political prisoners held by the government.

Independent organizations have produced varying estimates. Human Rights Watch said in April that more than 700 people remained imprisoned for political reasons, while Prisoners Defenders reported more than 1,200 political prisoners in Cuba in the spring of 2026. Cuba denies holding anyone for political reasons.

“That is the real Cuban embargo,” Bartos said. “It is the embargo the regime imposes on its own people: on speech, on faith, on enterprise, on dissent, on political rights and hope — and now, quite literally, on light.”

Rodríguez accused the U.S. delegation of offering “worn-out lies” and attempting to prevent the General Assembly from debating the effects of American policy.

Cuba’s electricity crisis has been driven by severe fuel shortages and an aging, poorly maintained power system that has struggled to meet demand. The Cuban government primarily blames U.S. restrictions, while Washington attributes the island’s broader economic crisis to communist economic policies, corruption and repression.
