Christa Pike, Tennessee’s first woman scheduled to be executed in more than two centuries, remained alive after receiving two syringes of lethal-injection drugs as her attorneys sought an emergency stay.

Pike, 50, was secured to a gurney inside Tennessee’s death chamber in Nashville shortly before 7:30 p.m. CDT. The US Supreme Court had rejected her request to halt the execution about an hour earlier, according to The Tennessean.

Witnesses who gathered to observe the historic execution said Pike was still speaking in complete sentences as officials prepared to administer the death penalty.

WKRN reporter Tori Gessner recalled Pike saying, “My arm feels like it’s about to bust. One spot is really throbbing.”

After Pike was given two syringes containing pentobarbital, she did not appear to die. Her attorneys then urgently petitioned the US District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee for another stay.

“Ms. Pike has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat and is audibly snoring,” her attorneys wrote in the emergency filing.

Pete Davidson Recalls Taking Six Drugs at Once Before Rehab

Pete Davidson is opening up about the 2023 period when his substance use reached its lowest point — and how his mother’s fear ultimately pushed him toward rehab.

“It was K [ketamine]. I was getting liquid and cooking it,” Davidson, 32, told Variety on Wednesday, September 30, describing the drugs he used after portraying himself in the autobiographical Peacock series Bupkis. “And I would do acid and shrooms and whippets and smoke weed all day and eat pills every day.”

The actor left Saturday Night Live one year earlier, saying the show had given him structure and routine. While working on Bupkis, however, he said he was “constantly living” in his “own crap” and past trauma, turning to drugs as a way to numb the pain.

Davidson said his daily drug use became particularly frightening because he no longer experienced it as a typical high. “It got scary because I didn’t feel high,” he recalled. “I felt high when I wasn’t doing it, so I was like, this is a huge problem.”

“I don’t f*** with drugs anymore. It’s been two or three years from doing really hard stuff and about a year or more from weed,” Pete said. He added that cannabis was unexpectedly the most difficult substance for him to quit.

Fatherhood has become one of his strongest reasons for protecting his sobriety. Davidson said avoiding drugs is “easy” now “because I have a kid.”

“Anytime there’s ever a thought, I look at my phone background and go, ‘Oh yeah, no,’” Pete said, referring to his 9-month-old daughter, Scottie, whom he shares with his ex-girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt.

DNA Breakthrough Frees Douglas Stewart Carter After 41 Years

A man who spent decades on death row has been released on bail after prosecutors acknowledged that new DNA testing failed to connect him to evidence recovered from the crime scene.

Douglas Stewart Carter, 71, left the Utah County Jail on Sept. 28 after serving 41 years for the 1985 killing of Eva Olesen, whose nephew was Provo’s police chief at the time. Carter’s attorney said his client spent most of those years on death row.

Newly analyzed DNA taken from the handle of the knife used to kill Olesen, along with blood found on a doorknob, does not match Carter, Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray wrote in a September court filing, according to the Associated Press.

Carter is living temporarily outside prison under GPS monitoring while awaiting a July 2027 trial. Prosecutors will not seek the death penalty this time. He is staying near the family that adopted his son as an infant.

Defense lawyer Neal Hamilton has asked prosecutors to drop every charge against Carter and open an investigation into what he describes as a wrongful conviction.

“Doug is taking the future one moment at a time,” Hamilton said. “Long-term planning is not something he has allowed himself to indulge in.”

Hamilton added, “The state of Utah didn’t just steal 41 years of his life. They stole his hopes and dreams. Doug’s first night of freedom was a lot to process. He is moving slowly, trying to savor what he can without overwhelming himself.”

What Happened to Eva Olesen?

On Feb. 27, 1985, Olesen’s husband discovered her body inside their Provo home, according to a 1995 Utah Supreme Court opinion. She was naked from the waist down and her hands had been bound behind her back.

Olesen, a 57-year-old teacher, had been stabbed 10 times and shot at close range. The firearm was never found, while the knife used in the attack came from her kitchen, the court opinion said.

Carter came under suspicion after police questioned him about an unrelated offense and later learned that his wife, Anne, had told someone she rushed home after hearing about the homicide to find out whether her husband was involved, according to the court opinion.

Carter denied killing Olesen but eventually signed a confession, which he later said had been coerced. Investigators also pointed to inconsistencies between his account and his wife’s. Two witnesses claimed Carter had “bragged” about the killing, the court opinion noted.

Although there was no physical evidence tying him to the crime—hair recovered at the scene did not belong to a Black person, while blood on Carter’s clothing was not Olesen’s—he was convicted and sentenced to death. Carter pleaded not guilty.

Carter’s case remained unresolved for decades. In 2022, a judge ordered a new trial, according to the Associated Press.

The Utah Supreme Court affirmed that decision in 2025, citing “numerous constitutional violations,” the AP reported. The witnesses later alleged that authorities had coached them to falsely implicate Carter in the murder.

“The defense maintains that physical evidence and eyewitness accounts pointed to a white male as the perpetrator,” Hamilton said in a Sept. 28 news release, “while Carter, a young Black man, was prosecuted for the crime.”

The latest DNA development came in July, when the state crime lab created a “suspect DNA profile” from evidence collected in the case, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. DNA testing was not available when Olesen was killed in 1985.

“No DNA testing was done before June of 2026,” Hamilton told Oxygen. “The items were submitted for testing in October of 2025, but DNA profiles were not identified from the evidence until June of 2026.”

Still, Gray cautioned that the results, according to the Associated Press, “does not necessarily exonerate Carter of the murder.”

For now, Hamilton said, Carter’s family is “smothering” him with love and attention as he adjusts to life outside prison.

“Doug has a lot of healing to do,” Neal said. “He is slowly starting that process. It would be immensely helpful to that healing process if he didn’t have to continue worrying about being wrongfully convicted, again.”

Olesen’s family said they “will not comment on the guilt or innocence of any individual” in a statement released by the Utah County Attorney’s Office and published by ABC News and other outlets. 

“The latest developments have raised difficult questions,” the statement read, “and once again left our family without the sense of resolution we had hoped for after so many years.” 

Olesen’s daughter-in-law Theresa Olesen said her family has “serious concerns” about Carter’s freedom. 

“By golly we were hoping for a concrete match,” she told CNN during Carter’s Sept. 28 bond hearing. “It doesn’t mean he wasn’t there.

“There are other factors and hopefully the investigation will continue,” she told the outlet. “We just want justice for Eva. And if he had any part of it, we want that to be known.”

TikTok Couple Charged With Arson After $10K House Fire

A couple known for their TikTok videos was arrested Tuesday after authorities accused them of starting a fire inside an abandoned West Virginia house, a blaze that may have caused more than $10,000 in damage to a neighboring church.

Dakota Harper, 21, and Felicity Eatmon, 22, each face a first-degree arson charge and a conspiracy charge tied to an offense punishable by up to life in prison, according to records from Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

The two have built a following by sharing videos together online, with approximately 28,000 followers on TikTok.

A video showing Harper at his arraignment has since gone viral for highlighting his stature. According to court records, Harper stands at 3-foot, 9-inch height and weighs 43-pounds.

During Harper’s appearance in Kanawha County court, he sat down before an officer came up behind him and moved his chair closer to the table. Only the top of his head was visible above the desk.

Eatmon, who has described herself as Harper’s fiancée in the couple’s social media posts, appeared in court with him. Court records list her height as 5 feet, 1 inch.

WCHS-TV reported that firefighters were called around 11:15 p.m. Sunday to the West Side of Charleston, where the fire broke out.

According to the complaint cited by the outlet, video appeared to show Eatmon hand Harper a piece of paper. Harper allegedly ignited it and placed it inside the house.

Investigators said the structure was abandoned and lacked working utilities. Portions of the property were still smoldering Monday morning, according to reports.

The fire also caused substantial damage to the nearby Canaan United Methodist Church, the complaint states.

Harper and Eatmon remain in custody, with bond set at $10,000 for each suspect.

Monaco chief executive Thiago Scuro has offered his version of a frantic transfer deadline day, when proposed Premier League transfers involving Folarin Balogun and Lamine Camara both collapsed.

Balogun was on course to join Everton, but doubts emerged during his medical. Monaco subsequently opened talks with Chelsea over a deal for midfielder Camara.

Everton later revived Balogun’s transfer after revisiting the terms, prompting Monaco to end negotiations with Chelsea. The Ligue 1 club did not want to lose both players on the same day.

The situation took another twist when Balogun ultimately decided against moving to Everton. Both he and Camara therefore remained in Monaco, while Chelsea were left deeply frustrated by the late reversal.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Scuro mounted a strong defence of Monaco’s conduct and rejected the suggestion that the club had been “the bad guys” in the deadline-day drama.

Scuro said Monaco had been prepared to sanction Balogun’s departure but had never intended to sell Camara. He insisted that the midfielder had been told of the club’s stance earlier in the day, after Monaco had already turned down several approaches for him during the summer.

“During the day, we had a clear agreement for Balogun to go to Everton. He flew yesterday morning to complete his medical and sign the contract,” Scuro said.

“Balogun, as well as providing salary relief, was also an important source of income for the club. Lamine, meanwhile, was expected to stay.”

“That was the situation until the middle of the afternoon. Chelsea had continued to ask about Lamine and had been testing our position for around 10 days. They kept asking: ‘What about Lamine?’”

“At about 4pm, Chelsea contacted us after selling a midfielder, Enzo Fernandez. They asked whether Monaco might now be willing to consider a sale. Our answer was exactly the same: no. At that time, Balogun was in Liverpool completing his medical and everything appeared to be progressing well.”

According to Scuro, Everton returned around 7pm with concerns about Balogun’s medical. He said those concerns were difficult to understand, both for Monaco’s medical team and for the player’s own medical advisers.

While Monaco continued discussions with Everton over Balogun’s condition, Chelsea renewed their efforts to sign Camara and negotiations over a possible transfer moved forward.

“Then, around 10pm or perhaps a little earlier, Everton decided there was no issue and told us they were ready to proceed and sign the contract,” Scuro said.

“Once we received that information, we went back to Chelsea and said: ‘We have our deal there, so there will be no deal for Camara.’ That was the fair thing to do. This is also part of how the transfer market works.”

“All of us chose to conduct this business on the final day of the window, with the clock running down and everyone trying to find solutions. It is not fair for that kind of fast-moving negotiation to make Monaco appear to be the bad guys.”

“Blaming Monaco for what happened is not fair. We informed everyone once again that there was no agreement with Chelsea, and we continued progressing with Balogun’s transfer.”

However, just as the Everton move appeared close to completion, Balogun decided not to go through with it. The forward had reportedly been upset by Everton’s initial concerns about his medical, leaving both transfers dead at the last possible moment.

Scuro said: ‘Balogun’s allegation is that “I’m not feeling good because of the way the club treated me. I’m not feeling good because Everton’s medical department raised doubts about my future or my health. I have nothing (no health problem), so I’m not comfortable signing a long contract here.”

‘And the reality is that when Balo mentioned to us this feeling that he was not comfortable, he didn’t want to sign. We didn’t see ourselves in a position to push him. We had to respect his decision.’

Scuro added that Balogun may still depart in the next few days to a league where the transfer window remains open, while he believes Camara could still move onto ‘better things’ in the future. 

He also insisted he sympathised with both players over their respective sagas.

Liberal frontbencher Melissa McIntosh has criticised the Albanese government after revealing she paid $12.40 for just two litres of milk and a loaf of bread.

Appearing on ABC’s Afternoon Briefing with Patricia Karvelas on Wednesday, McIntosh said families were being squeezed by rising household expenses. She argued Labor’s spending decisions were contributing to ongoing inflation.

Holding up the groceries during the interview, she said: “I came by the shops and a two-litre bottle of milk and a loaf of white bread cost $12.40, and that barely feeds a couple of kids for a couple of hours.”

“This is what people are paying for milk and bread, let alone what they’re paying for their mortgages and their rents to keep a roof over their families’ heads.”

McIntosh blamed the Albanese government for the pressure on household budgets, accusing Labor of failing to curb spending while inflation remained elevated.

“We are in this position because of this government, high inflation, and they just won’t back down on their homegrown expenditure,” she said.

The Liberal MP also criticised Treasurer Jim Chalmers, claiming he was shifting attention away from domestic policy by attributing inflationary pressures to overseas events.

“I couldn’t believe Jim Chalmers today,” McIntosh said.

McIntosh said government expenditure was a major source of inflationary pressure, pointing to the public sector’s share of economic activity and Australia’s growing debt.

“When you’ve got nearly 28 per cent of GDP coming from government spending, of course inflation is going to be high,” she said.

“We’ve got $1 trillion of debt and when you’ve got $1 trillion of debt, you’re paying off that debt. It’s like having a bad credit card.”

“$33 billion a year is just paying off that debt. Imagine the hospital funding. Imagine the infrastructure that could be built.”

Asked whether the Coalition would have to identify savings—including to cover rising indexed payments—and whether that could involve reducing social services, McIntosh rejected the suggestion.

“We’re not looking to cut support,” she said.

‘I’m in Penrith in western Sydney where people are doing it really tough right now and I’m hearing more and more people are going onto the social welfare system, not because they want to, but because they need to.’

Instead, she said governments should focus on making sure taxpayer money delivered real results rather than just increasing spending.

‘For too long, success has been judged on the amount of money that is being thrown at programs,’  McIntosh said.

‘We need to ensure that the money is having a positive impact on people’s lives.

‘I don’t want to see the line-ups at the food banks I’m seeing now where the working homeless are making a decision between having a roof over their heads, paying the bills for having that roof over their heads, or feeding their families,’ she said.  

The government has pushed back on claims its spending is driving inflation, with Chalmers arguing global factors, including conflict in the Middle East, remain a key source of price pressures through higher oil costs.

‘Public demand growth has slowed considerably,’ Chalmers said on Thursday.

‘In fact, it came in even lower in the budget numbers we released on Monday than what we were anticipating when we released the budget in May.’

Jesse Baird was asked to leave his Paddington rental by his two female housemates after disagreements over the condition in which the home was being kept.

One of the women, who gave evidence under the pseudonym Belinda Smith for legal reasons, told the court she had first lived with Baird in a larger share house in Drummoyne from 2022.

While they were living in Drummoyne, Baird introduced her to Beau Lamarre-Condon. Smith said Baird told her the pair were in a romantic relationship.

After that lease ended, Smith and Baird chose to find a home of their own. They moved with Smith’s female friend, identified in court as Sarah King for legal reasons.

The trio began renting a property on Brown Street in Paddington on April 1, 2023.

Asked by Crown Prosecutor Brett Hatfield SC whether she and Baird were friends, Smith replied: “We were cordial, but didn’t socialise outside the house.”

Smith said Baird told her he and Lamarre-Condon had ended their relationship in early 2023. However, she saw Lamarre-Condon at the Paddington property in August that year.

During a short conversation, Lamarre-Condon told her he had organised a New Year’s Eve holiday in Bali for himself and Baird, including “nice accommodation”.

The court was also shown text messages exchanged between Smith and King.

The messages centred on the nature of Baird’s relationship with Lamarre-Condon.

In one message, a housemate wrote: “Lots to fill you in on, Beau stayed last night lol.”

The response was sarcastic: “Just friends though.”

The women also discussed Lamarre-Condon driving Baird to Newcastle to pick up a new car.

One housemate responded: “[Oh my god] just as friends though lol pretty sure Beau lives with his parents.”

Smith told the court she later questioned Baird about what was happening between him and Lamarre-Condon.

She raised the planned Bali trip and suggested Lamarre-Condon might regard the relationship as more serious than Baird did.

In November 2023, Baird allegedly told Smith that he had woken during the night and discovered Lamarre-Condon looking through his phone.

Smith said Baird was “very angry” about the incident.

The court heard the tenancy agreement was scheduled to end on March 29, 2024.

Smith and King wanted to extend the lease, but planned to bring in another female friend and have Baird leave the property.

‘Were there some issues about the way the house was kept?’ Mr Hatfiend asked.

‘Yes,’ Ms Smith replied.

She said Baird was initially upset when he was asked to move out because he had wanted to stay on the lease, but he agreed to find alternative accommodation.

Ms Smith told the court that conversation took place in January or February 2024 – just weeks before he died.

‘We remained cordial,’ she said.

All Elite Wrestling has released the final footage of PAC, whose real name was Benjamin Satterley, filmed after his last match just hours before he was found dead.

The British wrestler, formerly known as Neville during his WWE career, was discovered “passed out” inside a vehicle in the parking lot of a CAVA restaurant near Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Sunday.

Satterley was later pronounced dead at the age of 40. Police are not treating the death as suspicious, with further examinations under way to establish the cause and manner of death.

The night before, Satterley had wrestled at AEW’s All Out pay-per-view at the NOW Arena.

He was defeated by Andrade before appearing again later in the main event, which saw Jon Moxley face Will Ospreay. Ospreay, another British wrestling star, ultimately won the contest.

Following the match, Moxley delivered an intense backstage promo that AEW has now broadcast. He spoke about the importance of learning how to lose, described wrestling as the “best job in the world” and reflected on how he wanted to be remembered at his funeral.

Moxley introduced the video during a tribute on AEW’s latest show, explaining that it had been “recorded Saturday night after All Out” and was “the last time we saw Ben in our cameras.”

Wearing a baseball cap and a grey hoodie emblazoned with “against the world,” Moxley sat down as Satterley stood behind him and began addressing the camera.

“Nothing really to say other than Will was just better than me tonight,” he began. “Will Ospreay, that’s the best in that ring.

“Gave everything I had. Took every shot I had to the best of my ability. I have no regrets. Will Ospreay is indomitable.

“It’s a part of the game, though, man. You’re gonna lose. I don’t care who you are, you’re gonna lose.

“You’ve gotta know how to lose. You’re gonna lose in wrestling. You’re gonna lose in life. You’re gonna lose people. You’re gonna lose opportunities.

Steve Hilton Slams Xavier Becerra’s Tax Plan in California Debate

Steve Hilton opened Wednesday night’s debate ready for confrontation, invoking a notorious Washington insult aimed at Xavier Becerra. The Republican reminded voters that a former Biden administration official had once referred to Becerra as “Bitch-ass,” immediately giving California’s only scheduled gubernatorial debate a combative edge as Becerra defended his record from the opening moments.

The Republican challenger repeatedly pressed Becerra on taxes, government bureaucracy and his tenure as California attorney general. Becerra, the Democratic front-runner, responded by attacking Hilton’s tax proposals and highlighting his alliance with President Donald Trump.

“Thank you to CNN for bringing Xavier Becerra out of hiding,” Hilton said.

Hilton used the CNN debate to accuse Becerra of failing to take meaningful action while serving as the state’s top law-enforcement official.

“When you were there as Attorney General, you did nothing,” Hilton said. “You did nothing.”

The debate soon shifted to taxes. Hilton proposed eliminating taxes on the first $150,000 of income and repealing California’s gas tax, while Becerra argued that such reductions would ultimately harm working residents.

Hilton said his plan would benefit working Californians as well as higher-income residents, whom he argued help create jobs. Becerra labeled the proposal “Trump tax cuts” and warned that it would provide the state’s wealthiest residents with a 40% tax break.

Becerra added that he did not want Wall Street investors to have an easier time buying California homes than the state’s teachers.

One of the evening’s most pointed exchanges followed. When Becerra argued that California should avoid repeating policies he believes have failed, Hilton responded: “Yes, like voting Democrat.”

Artificial intelligence also became a point of disagreement. Hilton called for a pause on the use of AI in California classrooms, while Becerra cited his lawsuits against Google and Meta.

“And I will continue to do so as governor,” Becerra said.

Hilton then challenged Becerra to identify a single action he had taken to reduce government red tape. Becerra pointed to his lawsuit against the city of Huntington Beach in Orange County.

“That’s more red tape,” Hilton replied.

Becerra also warned that California would see “Trump results” under a Hilton administration. Trump has endorsed Hilton and supported his campaign.

Hilton entered the debate behind Becerra in two September polls. The UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies Poll showed Becerra leading 58% to 33%, while the Public Policy Institute of California Statewide Survey put the race at 60% for Becerra and 38% for Hilton.

Outside the debate, Hilton has made Becerra’s record a central campaign issue. His campaign website prominently uses the nickname “Bitch-ass Becerra,” referencing a reported Washington-era insult attributed to former Biden administration adviser Susan Rice.

Because no second debate was scheduled, Wednesday’s event represented the candidates’ only planned opportunity to attack one another directly before California voters cast their ballots.

The California Post reported Tuesday that former Biden administration colleagues had questioned Becerra’s qualifications to become governor. One former colleague alleged that Becerra had referred disparagingly to migrant children as “little Juanitos and Juanitas.”

“I do not think he is qualified to be the governor,” Becerra’s former colleague told The Post.

“I don’t think he’s qualified to be the boss of anything.”

Georgia Student Survives 8-Story Plunge After Metal Bench Breaks Fall

A 21-year-old University of Georgia student survived an eight-story fall from an Athens apartment window after apparently slipping through a screen while dancing near the open window, according to a police report obtained by News Media.

Kristin Sargent fell from a window on the eighth floor of the Rambler Athens apartment complex on West Broad Street at about 7:37 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses told investigators that Sargent had been dancing on a couch or air mattress positioned near the open window when she apparently went through the screen. She landed in the courtyard near a pool on the building’s second floor, the report said.

Investigators found signs that Sargent hit a metal bench during the descent. An officer reported blood on the bench cushion and noted that one armrest had broken away.

Lt. Katie Jenkins, a spokesperson for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, said investigators believe the bench helped cushion Sargent’s fall. Jenkins told News Media that the incident is not being treated as a criminal case and that Sargent was understood to be alert and conscious.

911 audio obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta captured the chaotic moments immediately after the fall.

“We’re on the eighth floor. My friend just fell out of the window,” one caller told dispatchers. “She’s on the ground. She fell out of the window. We were dancing, and she just fell out of the window.”

A dispatcher then asked if Sargent was moving.

“Is she moving? Is she moving? No, she’s not,” the caller replied.

The caller later said she could see Sargent below but could not tell whether her eyes were open.

“No, I don’t know. I’m looking down at her on the floor. She’s not moving,” the caller said.

Paramedics took Sargent to a hospital. Police investigators interviewed her and witnesses there while forensic personnel examined the scene, according to the report.

A responding officer wrote that the information collected at the scene indicated the fall was accidental. Jenkins also confirmed to News Media that police are not investigating the incident as a criminal matter.

The police report lists Sargent as a resident of the apartment where she fell.

Police did not provide details about the window or say what safety measures were, or were not, in place.

Rambler Athens previously said it was reviewing the incident.

News Media reached out to the apartment complex for additional information about the window and any safety measures in place at the time of the fall.

A representative for the University of Georgia did not immediately respond to News Media’s request for additional information.
