AI Data Center Rules Lead Over 100 New State Laws Implemented

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – As of Wednesday, over 100 new state laws have become official, with one law in particular tackling the hotly debated issue of Artificial Intelligence Data Centers.

Recently, community members have been attending local government meetings in droves to voice their concerns about the potential establishment of these facilities. The primary worries involve the strain on water resources and the impact on electricity expenses.

Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted the immense power consumption of data centers, noting, “These data hubs can use as much electricity as a city with a population of 500,000 or even more.” He stressed that the financial burden for this usage should not fall on Florida’s residents.

The governor asserts that this new legislation is designed to safeguard the interests and resources of the state’s citizens.

Under the new law, public utilities must adhere to specific minimum tariff and service requirements for substantial consumers of electricity. Furthermore, the water management district’s governing board is barred from granting water usage permits to large-scale data centers in certain situations.

Locally, large crowds have gathered to oppose the idea of facilities in Haines City, Fort Meade, and Lakeland.

Resident Lorena Ervin said, “We as a society cannot handle it, especially if we’re just Haines City specific, we cannot keep up or maintain any of it.”

Here is a list of the new Florida laws going into effect July 1.

X-Men ’97 Season 2, Episode 2: Discover the Bold New Take on the Iconic Intro

Contains spoilers for “X-Men ’97” Season 2, Episode 2 — “A Force to Be Reckoned With”

Marvel’s acclaimed animated series, “X-Men ’97,” kicks off with an introduction that will feel very familiar to longtime fans. The new series pays homage to the beloved ’90s “X-Men: The Animated Series” by maintaining the original theme music and structure, albeit with a fresh animation style and lineup of characters. However, the second episode of Season 2, titled “A Force to Be Reckoned With,” takes a bold step by replacing the iconic X-Men with the dynamic X-Force.

In this episode, titled “A Force to Be Reckoned With,” the spotlight is firmly on the X-Force. Led by Cable, voiced by Chris Potter, the team includes Psylocke, Archangel, and Jubilee, along with Sunspot, portrayed by Gui Agustini. Their mission is crucial: to locate the X-Men who find themselves scattered throughout various points in time. Meanwhile, X-Force faces the rising threat of X-Factor, a team led by Cyclops’ brother, who is also Cable’s uncle, Havok. Together, X-Factor and the government form an interesting alliance. This episode truly underscores the phrase, “X gon’ give it to ya!”

Paying homage to the enduring legacy of X-Force, the episode’s introduction cleverly swaps out the original X-Men characters for those featured prominently in the storyline. Crucially, the series wisely opts to retain the original and beloved theme music, understanding some traditions are simply too sacred to change.

X-Force was a highly influential superhero team in the ’90s

“X-Men ’97” finds its roots in its predecessor, “X-Men: The Animated Series,” which debuted in 1992 at a time when Professor Xavier’s mutants were riding a wave of massive popularity. In fact, the comic “X-Men” #1, released in 1991, became a sensation, selling over eight million copies. That same year, Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza’s “X-Force” #1 was no slouch either, achieving stunning success with over five million sales. The resonance of these stories is palpable, continuing to captivate audiences decades later.

A continuation of the New Mutants, the X-Force prided itself as the edgier version of the X-Men (with a lot more pockets and weapons). The team wasn’t composed of villains or antiheroes, but rather preferred to use excessive force when dealing with adversaries and problems. As a result, X-Force became popular in its own right and developed a fanbase, while its leader, Cable, also popped up in a few episodes of “X-Men: The Animated Series.”

Now, in “X-Men ’97” Season 2, the influential group finally gets its time to shine, even if it isn’t the same team that debuted in the pages of “X-Force” #1. Maybe a spin-off animated show is exactly what the doctor ordered, especially considering how most of the X-Force was eliminated from “Deadpool 2.”

Red Sox’s Willson Contreras confronts fan following ejection in dramatic encounter

0

Boston Red Sox standout Willson Contreras reportedly invited a fan to a fight after an altercation resulted in his ejection from the game against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

The exchange began when a fan boldly posted on a Red Sox fan Instagram account, calling Contreras names and claiming, “Wilson Contreras is a p—y. And I’m a die-hard Sox fan.” In response, Contreras appeared to challenge the fan in a fiery reply.

“Come meet me at Fenway,” Contreras allegedly wrote in a comment, which has since been removed.

Willson Contreras’ comment came on an Instagram post showing the video of a fight during the Red Sox-Nationals game.

The heated comment emerged on a post that featured a video clip of Contreras being ejected during Boston’s 8-1 defeat on home turf against the Nationals.

The ejection incident unfolded in the fourth inning when Cade Cavalli struck out Contreras and provocatively told the first baseman to “sit down, boy.”

Contreras appeared to ask if Cavalli was talking to him, then walked towards the pitcher as the dugouts and bullpens cleared.

“I don’t know. I’m Venezuelan. I don’t know if it’s racist or not,” Contreras told MassLive after the game. “But I’ll let MLB handle that.”

Boston catcher Carlos Narvaez tried to hold Contreras back but something sparked the Venezuelan to once again sprint toward the group of players, eventually removing his helmet and throwing it toward Cavalli.

Contreras, Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton, interim Red Sox manager Chad Tracy and Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas were ejected.

Cavalli was not.

Tension between the two players started in the first inning when the two brushed into each other on the way back to thier dugouts.

The ejection marks the second in two nights for Contreras, who was tossed from Monday’s game for tapping his helmet to challenge a call that was not challengeable.

“I feel like everything’s against me right now,” Contreras said. “Got ejected (Monday) night for nothing. I got ejected today even though I was walking back to the dugout. And that’s why I’m not gonna say much — because, like I said, if I say something, they’re gonna use it against me.”

Tennessee GOP Senators Demand Investigation into Execution Mishap

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A letter, penned by eight Republican senators, has been sent to Governor Bill Lee, urging an independent investigation into the abortive execution attempt of death row inmate Tony Carruthers. This review is requested to ensure transparency before any further death sentences are carried out in the state.

“As staunch supporters of the death penalty, we feel compelled to express our grave concerns regarding the botched execution of Tony Von Carruthers, dated May 21, 2026,” stated the senators in their communication. They emphasized the necessity for full transparency and accountability from the Department of Correction concerning this incident.

On May 21, Governor Lee intervened to postpone Carruthers’ execution. The decision followed reports from the Tennessee Department of Correction, which revealed that medical personnel were unable to locate a vein suitable for a backup IV line. This was a pivotal procedure in executing Carruthers, who was sentenced for a triple murder committed in Memphis in 1994.

The lawmakers condemned the failed execution attempt, describing it as a significant lapse in the state’s responsibility to enact the legal sentences determined by its courts.

Sen. Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald), one of the lawmakers who signed the letter, told News 2 he wants to know how the state selected the medical personnel tasked with administering the lethal injection, their certifications, and whether they were qualified to perform the procedures the protocol requires.

“Being a physician myself, I understand that IV access is not always easy, and some people, they may be dehydrated, they may have veins that have collapsed, or they may have a lot of issues, but certainly 12 attempts at IV access is just unacceptable,” Hensley said. “Certainly, something was amiss at that last execution attempt. Whether they didn’t obtain qualified medical personnel or what the issue was, we’re just asking them to look into the process.”

The letter also calls for any issues discovered to be corrected before the next execution, which is scheduled for Aug. 13, and for the findings to be made public.

“We raise these concerns not in opposition to the death penalty but in defense of it—out of respect for the rule of law, the verdicts of Tennessee juries, and the families still awaiting justice,” the letter concludes.

Some anti-death penalty advocates told Nexstar’s News 2 they hope the letter encourages the governor to take action to ensure what happened during Carruthers’ execution attempt never happens again.

“There is concern among conservatives about government overreach and lack of accountability and transparency, because when you have a secrecy like this, it allows for problems to go unaddressed,” Stacy Rector, executive director of Tennesseans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, said.

“Twice now under Governor Lee’s tenure, we have had a situation where a family has been in the in the witness room at an execution and have had to leave without that execution having taken place because of problems that should have and could have been addressed much sooner if the TDOC and the state were being transparent about what is going on,” Rector continued. “I think that is what is at the heart of what these lawmakers are asking. They’re asking for transparency and accountability from the state government.”

Hensley said lawmakers have not yet received a response from the governor.

News 2 reached out to the governor’s office and TDOC for comment, but had not heard back by the time this article was published.

Tragic Discovery: Dozens of Dogs Found Dead at Animal Rescue, Some Fatally Shot as Investigation Continues

0

Authorities uncovered a grim scene involving over 100 deceased dogs, many showing evidence of gunshot wounds, during an investigation into a California animal rescue accused of abuse and deception.

Executing a search warrant at Miranda’s Rescue in Fortuna, deputies from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office made this shocking discovery on Thursday.

Sheriff William Honsal described the findings as a “horrific scene,” where investigators unearthed 117 canine remains, multiple skulls, countless bones, and six stray microchips from various excavation sites on the property, according to an official release.

Dozens of the unearthed dog bodies appeared to be in varying states of decomposition. X-ray results revealed several dogs showed evidence of bullet fragments, deputies say.

Investigators also discovered an area inside a barn on the property where they believe the dogs were killed. More than 600 dog collars were recovered from that same location.

Katie Price Advances in MasterChef: A Culinary Triumph

In a dramatic turn of events, Katie Price advanced to the next stage of Celebrity MasterChef in Monday’s pre-recorded episode, a mere few hours after news broke of her sudden hospitalization in the early morning due to an eye injury from an alleged assault.

The episode showcased her culinary skills as she delighted judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace with her rendition of toad in the hole. Expressing her joy, the 43-year-old mother said, “I’m really happy that I’m still in, really happy. I’m excited and nervous. Never underestimate the Pricey.”

In this episode, Katie was in competition with celebrities like Joe Swash, former footballer Dion Dublin, actor Melissa Johns, and furniture specialist Will Kirk. Unfortunately for Kirk, he was the one who left the competition at the conclusion of the show.

Tragic Flight Experience Ends in Fatal Field Crash – Two Lives Lost

0

Tragedy struck near a small village in Essex as two individuals lost their lives when a light aircraft crashed into a wheat field during a ‘flight experience’.

Emergency responders were dispatched to Mill Lane in High Ongar shortly after 12:30 PM on Tuesday, following reports of a small plane going down in a field.

Essex Police have confirmed the unfortunate passing of both occupants aboard the two-seater Cessna in the incident.

According to the police, the aircraft had departed from North Weald Airfield, embarking on what was intended to be a brief ‘flight experience’ before meeting with the fatal crash.

A significant police presence continues to secure the crash site, with officers expected to maintain a perimeter for several days as the investigation proceeds.

Several police vehicles, including forensics vans, were parked on a track within the scene.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched an investigation into the crash and has dispatched a team of inspectors to the site.

An AAIB spokesperson said: ‘An accident in Ongar, Essex involving a light aircraft which occurred today has been notified to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

‘An investigation has been launched and a team of inspectors are on their way to the accident site.’

Essex Police have now confirmed that both people on board the plane died in the crash

Essex Police have now confirmed that both people on board the plane died in the crash

Flight-tracking website Flightradar24 shows the Cessna 152 plane took off from North Weald Airfield at 12.22pm.

It headed eastwards before turning back towards the airfield after five minutes.

Tracking of the plane ended at 12.30pm, which is when the emergency services received a report it had crashed.

The plane operated two flights earlier that day, and five the day before.

Detective Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin, Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: ‘Yesterday lunchtime, Tuesday, June 30, a small aircraft took off from North Weald airfield on what was expected to be a short journey.

‘The two-seat Cessna aircraft was carrying out a short flight experience but sadly it did not return.

‘At 12.30pm we were contacted by members of the public who reported a small aircraft had crashed in a field off Mill Lane, Ongar.

‘Sadly we can now confirm that the two people on board have died. Formal identification has yet to take place.’

He continued: ‘Due to the nature of the incident this is likely to be a complex process and one which we will approach sensitively and compassionately.

‘Their families will be supported and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

‘Our focus is to establish what happened and give the families the answers they need while ensuring they’re treated with dignity and respect.

‘The investigation has continued overnight and our detectives and forensic teams are working at scene in parallel with the Air Accident Investigations Branch.’

He said police were also working alongside the fire service, the airfield and Epping Forest District Council to ‘build an accurate picture of what happened’.

‘We are also speaking to those who called emergency services and who witnessed what may have been a distressing incident,’ he said.

‘We would like to thank them for their help.’

He said police would remain at the scene carrying out inquiries in the coming days.

He appealed for any witnesses or those with footage to call 101 or to make a report online.

Cronin previously described the incident as ‘serious’ and said officers were working alongside other emergency services to secure the area.

He said: ‘This is a serious incident, and we understand it will cause concern in the local community.

‘We are working closely with emergency service partners to respond and ensure the area is safe. There will be a visible police presence as we deal with this incident.’

Police have urged residents to continue avoiding Mill Lane while emergency services and investigators carry out their work, thanking the public for their patience and understanding.

In a Facebook post, High Ongar’s St Mary’s Church said: ‘Please join us in praying for everyone involved, for the emergency services responding and for all those in our local community who have been affected.’

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.

Trump Set to Tour New Theodore Roosevelt Library in North Dakota’s Scenic Badlands

0

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — On Wednesday, President Donald Trump is set to visit North Dakota, where he’ll tour the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. This impressive establishment delves into the life of the 26th president and is located in the rugged terrain that inspired Roosevelt’s commitment to conservation during his ranching and hunting years in the 1880s.

Spanning 96,000 square feet, the library is set to officially open over the Independence Day weekend, coinciding with the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration of the Declaration of Independence. Trump, however, will preview the $450 million development beforehand. Championed by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum during his tenure as North Dakota’s governor, the library’s debut is a nod to the area’s historical ties to America’s westward journey.

For the grand unveiling, all living former presidents received invitations. This library joins a network of presidential libraries across the U.S., which celebrate figures from Ronald Reagan in California to Franklin D. Roosevelt in New York and Herbert Hoover in Iowa. Recently, the Obama Presidential Center opened its doors in Chicago, hosting four former presidents at its inauguration.

According to Library Executive Director Robbie Lauf, Trump will be the inaugural visitor. At the event, held in a nearby Western-themed amphitheater, Trump will address attendees. Organized by Freedom 250, a group he established as nonpartisan, the event marks a highlight of his participation in the week’s festivities. Trump is also scheduled to revisit South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore on Friday for a fireworks display in honor of Independence Day, echoing his 2020 attendance.

President Trump has frequently lauded Roosevelt, even likening himself to him. He asserted in 2020 that he was “The number one environmental president since Teddy Roosevelt.”

Trump began his second term by trumpeting construction of the Panama Canal during the Roosevelt administration. He even suggested that the U.S. might seek to take back the waterway from Panama to curb influence from China — though that’s a goal that was overshadowed by his suggestions that Washington might seize control of Greenland or that Canada could become America’s 51st state.

In the run-up to staging a UFC fight on the White House lawn for his 80th birthday, Trump said he was aware of Roosevelt holding far lower-key boxing matches in the White House — though he made no mention of Roosevelt having detached the retina of his left eye during one such sparring session.

The trip also underscores the president’s esteem for Burgum, who has become a key face of and cheerleader for the president’s expansive renovation projects around Washington.

Roosevelt was a New York native with a strong connection to North Dakota

Roosevelt visited Dakota Territory in 1883 to hunt bison. On Valentine’s Day the next year, his mother and wife died hours apart in the same house.

Devastated, the New York native came to Dakota where he ranched cattle and hunted big game in the West during visits mostly from 1884 to 1887.

He underwent deep personal growth from his experiences, including chasing boat thieves down a river, standing up to a bully in a bar and working alongside cowboys who ridiculed him for wearing eyeglasses.

Roosevelt, who served from 1901 to 1909, later said he never would have been president were it not for his experiences in North Dakota.

Near the library is Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Visitors can hike trails and drive a scenic route through the colorful, rugged Badlands where bison and wild horses roam.

In 2019, Burgum championed the library to North Dakota’s Republican-led legislature when he was governor, touting its tourism potential. The legislature approved a $50 million operations endowment, requiring library planners to raise $100 million in private donations, a goal met in 2020. Donations total about $354 million as of early 2026.

Donors include oil executive Harold Hamm, the Waltons of Walmart fame, Citadel founder and CEO Kenneth Griffin and Burgum himself.

Burgum also has lobbied for Roosevelt’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, saying during an event previewing the Roosevelt library, “Keep your fingers crossed.”

That’s a nod to Roosevelt — who had become alarmed at the number of injuries and deaths of college football players — convening a 1905 White House meeting featuring the presidents of Harvard, Yale and Princeton to urge safety improvements in the sport. The discussions eventually helped sparked the founding of the NCAA, college’s sports governing body.

The library will showcase Roosevelt’s ideas and artifacts

Visitors will learn about Roosevelt’s conservation ideas and his Rough Riders regiment of the Spanish-American War, but also his “horrific comments” about Native Americans and other issues “that have obviously aged poorly,” Lauf said.

Artifacts, many of them out of public view for decades, will tell Roosevelt’s story. Visitors will see his Rough Riders uniform; the 1884 diary grieving his terrible loss; and the eyeglasses case, speech and shirt from the 1912 assassination attempt against him.

Organizers hope the library draws families and thousands of school children from the region, as well as some of the millions of motorists who travel to Yellowstone National Park and the Black Hills.

“It’s a feature, not a bug, that we are in a county of 1,000 people and a town of 120,” Lauf said. “TR came here for that purpose.”

The Dakota Resource Council on Tuesday hosted several conservation leaders who criticized Burgum and Trump for policies they say contradict Roosevelt’s conservation principles, such as cutting staff and budgets and prioritizing energy development on public lands.

Last year Burgum signed an order prioritizing the openness and accessibility of parks to the public amid the workforce cuts. He has compared America’s public lands and natural resources to “assets” that should be responsibly developed to exert “energy dominance.”

Himesh Patel Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Secrets of ‘Enola Holmes 3’ and His Heartfelt Moment with Louis Partridge

Five years ago, Himesh Patel was given the opportunity to take on the role of Dr. John Watson, one of literature’s most enduring characters, in a cameo for Netflix’s Enola Holmes 2. Reflecting on this, Patel considered what it meant to bring a British Indian perspective to such a classic figure.

“I was really encouraged by the idea when screenwriter Jack Thorne and I first talked about it back in 2021, at the time of my cameo appearance,” Patel shared in a recent Zoom chat with Decider. “It represented a significant departure from any previous depiction of Watson,” he added.

Today, Patel steps back into Watson’s distinguished attire, including his walking cane and waistcoat, for a more prominent role in Enola Holmes 3. This film, the latest in the family-friendly franchise led by Millie Bobby Brown as the sleuthy sister of Sherlock Holmes, is inspired by Nancy Springer’s book series. Although Watson doesn’t spend much time with Sherlock—Henry Cavill’s character is mostly kidnapped—he plays an essential part in aiding Enola in her quest to find her missing brother. An especially poignant scene with actor Louis Partridge, portraying Enola’s romantic interest Tewkesbury, sees Watson confront his character’s implications in Britain’s colonial past.

“It’s a really meaningful scene,” Patel told Decider. “That moment truly captured what drew me to this version of Watson from the start, all those years ago.”

In his conversation with Decider, Patel discussed his collaboration with director Philip Barantini and Thorne, who has adapted all three Enola Holmes films, particularly on this significant scene. He also talked about the personal impact of colonial history and gave a glimpse of his upcoming venture in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey.

I was so happy that Dr. Watson got a big role in this film. Tell me about crafting your version of Watson—did you look to other portrayals of him, or go back to the Conan Doyle stories?

I went back to the stories—read some, and listened to some audio book versions. I had time to do that over the years, between number two and number three. While I waited for news on whether we were going to do a number three, I just kept that running in the background, and so that was a lot of fun. I’ve watched a lot of the other interpretations, just through being a fan and watching versions of Sherlock [Holmes]. But I didn’t consciously turn to them for preparation. I just trusted that there’s something there in the background that’s given me a certain sense of what has been done, what could be done. But as with anything, you want to stay truthful to the story that’s in front of you.

You get this huge, exciting introduction in the movie, the chase scene on horseback. Do you have any horseback riding experience? What was filming that sequence like?

I do not have any horseback riding experience. So, there’s a lot of movie magic that allows me to look like I have copious horseback riding experience. [Laughs.] But yes, it was a reminder that maybe that’s a skill I should acquire because it does look great, doesn’t it?

I know you don’t have many scenes with Henry Cavill, we still get a sense of the Watson and Holmes dynamic, when Watson recalls the story about having tea with Holmes. I’m wondering, what’s your head cannon of this version of the Watson and Holmes relationship?

I really love that sequence for that story. It was one of those bits of writing that I was so excited to shoot. It really gave me a lot, just a little snapshot of a moment, as it does for the audience. It gave me a lot in terms of building the character, and as you say, “head canon.” Is that what you just said? That’s great. I’m going to use that.

Sorry, that’s my fandom roots.

That’s great! I think the years that have passed between when [Watson] first walked through the door, as we saw, at end of number two, and where you find them at number three—I think it, literally, has become home for Watson, but I think it’s also, emotionally, become home for Watson. As we learn in this story, this version of Watson has had to build a life for himself, devoid of many other contexts in which he previously existed.

Finding Sherlock, finding Enola—they’re a safe place for him, I think. He trusts them with his life. That isn’t to be taken lightly. No matter what’s going on, no matter what insane scrape they find themselves in, which is not the first time—though this is probably the highest stakes that he’s been in up til now, maybe—he would not be anywhere else. He would rather always be with them.

You have this really nice scene with Louis Partridge where Dr. Watson reflects on British imperialism in India, and his father. Can you tell me about how you approached that scene from when you first read it in the script, to filming on the day?

It was a process of evolution, actually. [Screenwriter] Jack [Thorne] had written this beautiful monologue, and I just thought that there was opportunity to add even more flavor to it. I’m so thankful that he—and [director] Philip [Barantini], and Millie [Bobby Brown], and our other producers—were so collaborative, so open to those ideas. They were all ears to my thoughts. We made a few edits, a few tweaks. I love how it sits in the movie—the way it cross cuts with Enola discovering the written truth of it all.

It’s a really special moment. I loved shooting it. I thought Louis did a beautiful job in that scene. It was the heart of what excited me about playing this version of Watson, really. From the moment that I came on board, all those years ago, because it’s a real point of difference to any other version of Watson that’s come before. It speaks to the overarching story that we’re trying to tell in this movie.

Can you say more about what specifically your ideas were, when you said that edits were made?

The details of it all sort of fade away into history. It’s been over a year now. But, I think it was a sense of the emotionality of a father and son relationship, against a wider context of forces beyond their control. How that can destroy your emotional relationships with those who you love, more than anything. That’s beyond so many of the other destructive forces of a movement such as imperialism and colonialism.

Obviously, they have destructive forces writ large, but the way they can twist people’s lives upside down is a more subtle thing that we don’t necessarily always see. I found it really spoke to those difficult conversations that we all have with our parents. We all have those Christmas dinners where someone brings something up and you go, “Why? Why am I having this conversation again?” [Laughs.] But this takes it to a whole another level, you know?

I hope you don’t mind me saying I really like the acknowledgment that this Watson is British Indian—that we get into that specificity of his identity rather than just ignorning it. How did you feel about highlighting that part of his character ?

I was very keen to highlight it in the right way. I was heartened by that when I first spoke to Jack Thorne about it back in 2021, when I would have done that cameo. I was curious as to where we might go with it. Those ideas were floating around then, and so it was really thrilling to finally get the script for number three and to see how that had unfolded. I thought [Thorne] crafted it all in beautifully, and sensitively. It’s an era of colonialism that we don’t necessarily explore in these contexts. I’m really excited that we’ve done that, and I really am happy with how it’s turned out, and I admire everyone for going there.

I have to ask if you’ve heard anything about Enola Holmes 4, and what you might want to see for Dr, Watson in future movies?

I haven’t heard anything. We are just here to enjoy number three coming out into the world. I would love to go again. I’d love to step into those shoes again. In terms of my hopes, I mean—a bit more time with Sherlock would be great. [Laughs.] Henry seems like a lovely guy. I’d love to spend a bit more time with him.

I’d love to see that, too. I also have to ask about The Odyssey—you play Odysseus’s second-in-command, Eurylochus. What can you tell me about that experience?

It was the privilege of a lifetime. I haven’t yet seen it. I’m going to see it soon. I can’t wait, because I’ve no doubt that it’s going to be really special. It was and always will be one of the most special experiences I’ve had in every way.

You’ve also just been cast in Ryan Coogler’s The X Files reboot. Congratulations. What can you tell me about your character in that? Is this a new version of Fox Mulder, or a new character?

Almost all I can tell you is that it’s a new character. [Laughs.]

FIFA World Cup 2026: July 1 Results, Highlights & Match Analysis

Fans anticipated an electrifying clash in Mexico’s Round of 32 face-off against Ecuador, and the teams delivered exactly that.

From the outset, Ecuador appeared tentative, opting for a cautious and slow-paced approach. This strategy proved costly for them.

Mexico dominated the opening 20 minutes with relentless aggression. The players, donned in green, stormed the field with unyielding fervor from the kickoff, launching repeated attacks that kept Ecuador on the defensive and unable to gather steam.

At the 21st-minute mark, Julián Quiñones pierced through Ecuador’s defenses effortlessly, executing a flawless shot that found the back of the net, sending waves of celebration through the crowd at Estadio Azteca.

Just ten minutes later, Raúl Jiménez, known for his prowess with Wolves, emulated this feat with a stunning goal soaring into the top right corner, extending Mexico’s lead to 2-0.

It was surprising to see Ecuador on the back foot this way. A team lauded for their defensive play throughout the tournament were soundly run through by a Mexican team that seemed fearless and, at times, telepathic.

By half-time, the pressure was clearly getting to the Ecuadorians — Alan Franco was booked for dissent in the 45th minute.

When Ecuador trooped off to the dressing room, they looked for all the world like a visiting team at Liverpool’s Anfield — rattled by the intensity of both the on-pitch attack and that of the fans in the stands.

When the second half began, Mexico went right back to work, their vision and passing among the best and most creative of the entire tournament. They’d changed up their tactics, however — with two goals in hand, the mission was now to protect them. Thus, Mexico parked the bus, free to sit back and let Ecuador come to them.

They did. Ecuador finally enjoyed a decent spell in possession at the top of the second half, provoking cacophony from the Mexican crowd.

Ecuador’s Pedro Vite blew their best chance for the night, hounded down the right flank toward the penalty area before booting the ball into orbit.

Ecuador made their first change in the 58th minute, Kevin Rodríguez came on to replace Enner Valencia. For Mexico, it was Brian Gutiérrez swapped out for Gilberto Mora.

The Mexican midfield made themselves a wall, batting away any ball that came even close to their box. Again and again, Ecuador probed the defensive line in search of a way through. Only in the 73rd minute did Mexico display its first example of poor defending, a loose ball from Ecuador very nearly finding its way into the net.

Unfortunately, with 25 minutes of regulation time still remaining, it was clear that Ecuador was running out of ideas. Tasked with climbing a mountain higher than the 2,200m Mexico City plateau they were already playing on, no answers were forthcoming.

It boiled over three minutes into extra time when Piero Hincapie drew a red card for covering his mouth with his hand when speaking to an opponent during a confrontation. Such conduct has been outlawed by FIFA. Miguel Almiron of Paraguay met a similar fate only days ago.

An ignoble end to a difficult game for Ecuador. A moment of further vindication for Mexico.

Yes, it was a battering. Yes, Mexico had Ecuador outplayed and out-manoeuvred from the moment the match began. But what a treat to watch a Mexican team this good ply their trade. They look like a team that will be very difficult to stop as they move forward.

Mbappé makes the difference

Kylian Mbappé scored twice, and Michael Olise was in scintillating form as France beat Sweden 3-0 at the World Cup on Wednesday to set up a Round of 16 clash with Paraguay.

Mbappé finished a superb move to break the deadlock just before half-time in the last-32 tie watched by 80,663 at the New York New Jersey Stadium, after France had already hit the woodwork twice — once through Mbappé and once through Olise.

The French were on top throughout against a limited Swedish side, utterly dominant in terms of possession and shots on goal.

Olise set up Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola for the second on 53 minutes, and then delivered a delightful pass for Mbappé to complete a convincing victory.

Mbappé’s strikes saw him move level with Lionel Messi on six goals in the all-star golden boot race at this World Cup.

The France captain now has 18 World Cup goals in total, meaning he is just one behind Messi’s overall record of 19 — a mark which 27-year-old Mbappé will keep chasing.

Olise released Mbappé through the middle to put the ball in the net in the 20th minute, only for a tight offside call to cut short the celebrations.

However, that sparked an intense spell of French pressure which eventually resulted in the opening goal.

Some of their football was mesmerising, as Mbappé hit the post from a Jules Koundé ball across the face of goal and Adrien Rabiot fired narrowly over.

Olise then struck an upright with a breathtaking overhead bicycle kick before Dembélé put the rebound wide.

The opener came right on half-time, after an Olise effort was tipped behind by Swedish ‘keeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.

Dembélé and Olise combined at the resulting corner before finding Mbappé, and he did the rest.

He celebrated his first goal by running across to embrace coach Didier Deschamps, who missed France’s final group game against Norway to travel home for his mother’s funeral.

Deschamps will step down at the end of the competition after 14 highly successful years in charge.

Going out in the Round of 32 would have been an anti-climactic way to depart for Deschamps, who captained the first France team to win the World Cup in 1998 and coached them to glory in 2018.

In 1998, France’s run to victory on home soil included a 1-0 last-16 win over Paraguay, when Laurent Blanc scored a golden goal in extra time.

Sweden have quality in attack too, with the Premier League trio of Viktor Gyökeres, Alexander Isak and Anthony Elanga. But they couldn’t get enough of the ball to create chances, and Graham Potter’s team now go home.

Sweden needed the interval to regroup, but they conceded again eight minutes after the restart as the magical Olise threaded a pass through the legs of Gustaf Lagerbielke for Barcola, who lashed in.

Olise couldn’t score when clean through, but soon after he delivered an exceptional assist for Mbappé to curl in again on 74 minutes.

Getting this far should really be seen as a success for Sweden, however, after they only made it to North America through the back door of the play-offs.

Les Bleus will face the South Americans in the Round of 16 again this time, on Saturday in Philadelphia.

France will be fully expected to win and march on. Freshly-minted giant killers Paraguay, riding high on their win over Germany, may feel differently.

Haaland the Great

Erling Haaland scored a late winner as Norway set up a Round of 16 showdown with Brazil at the World Cup after taming the Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in Texas on Tuesday.

The Manchester City striker prodded in from close range, the ball dribbling in on 86 minutes for his fifth goal of the tournament.

It was the first time that Norway had won a knockout game in the history of the competition.

A match between two physical teams was tepid to begin with at the impressive air-conditioned home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Côte d’Ivoire had a sight of goal after 20 minutes, defender Ghislain Konan bursting into the Norway box from the left but finding the side netting.

Côte d’Ivoire players and fans were irate just before the drinks break when the livewire Yan Diomandé was brought down on the break just inside his own half.

Referee Jesús Valenzuela surprisingly did not even book defender David Møller Wolfe.

The 19-year-old winger Diomandé, who appears set to join European champions Paris Saint-Germain from RB Leipzig, was growing into the game.

The African side, one of the youngest at the tournament, were on top and particularly threatening down Diomandé’s left-hand side of the pitch.

Haaland had little to feed on but might have done better with a tame header that bounced into the hands of goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

Then came a moment of genuine class as Nusa, fed by captain Martin Ødegaard, cut inside and bent the ball wonderfully into the top corner.

Ødegaard put his hands on his head in disbelief at the strike by the 21-year-old, Diomandé’s Leipzig team-mate.

Ståle Solbakken’s Norway finished the first half on the hunt for a second, and Haaland was denied by a last-gasp block by Ibrahim Sangaré, who celebrated as if scoring a goal.

Côte d’Ivoire, into the knockout rounds for the first time, won their 10th corner to start the second half.

Nicolas Pepe was denied by the legs of Norway stopper Ørjan Nyland as Côte d’Ivoire piled on the pressure.

Norway, runners-up to France in the group stage, were inches away from a second when Diallo blocked the ball on the goal line following a corner.

The Norway fans, sensing the next round was close, began their now-famous rowing in the stands.

Almost as soon as they stopped, Diallo danced into the box past two challenges for a spectacular leveller.

Then up popped Haaland to break Ivorian hearts, with goalkeeper Nyland pulling off a flying stop from Diallo’s well-struck free kick at the death to send Norway through.
