Australia’s Happiness Gap Unveiled: Key Concern Emerges as Primary Driver

0

Australians are feeling the strain of financial worries and are losing hope for an improved future.

In a comprehensive survey involving over 15,000 Australians, it’s evident that the pressure of rising living costs has not only emerged as the leading concern but is also eroding confidence about what lies ahead.

The 2026 Wicked Problems Report by Flinders University reveals that 65% of Australians list the cost of living as their primary worry, surpassing other issues like housing affordability at 40%, crime and safety at 37%, and healthcare access at 26%.

Conversely, issues such as education, social connectivity, and challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities were found to be lesser concerns, with the latter ranking lowest.

Notably, this survey also evaluated the national levels of happiness and optimism, revealing a significant disparity between the two.

While 69 per cent of Australians say they’re happy, far fewer are confident things are heading in the right direction, with many states recording optimism levels barely above a third of respondents.

Almost three-quarters (76 per cent) of those who said they were unhappy pointed to the same root cause: the cost of living.

A graph showing the issues Australians were most concerned about.

A tale of two outlooks

Money worries cut differently depending on who you ask.

Cost pressures were found to be hitting working-age households hardest — particularly gen X and gen Y — who are more likely to be balancing mortgages and rent alongside the rising cost of raising a family.

Younger Australians — nearly half (45 per cent) of gen Z and gen Y — were concerned about housing affordability, compared with a third of baby boomers, who are instead more worried about healthcare as they age.

The divide shows up geographically too. Housing pressure is more acute in Western Australia, South Australia and NSW. Crime and safety dominates concern in the Northern Territory, and is a fast-rising worry in Victoria.

Two states, two very different stories

Victoria was a standout in the report — and not for good reasons.

Victorians recorded the lowest happiness of any state or territory — 65.9 per cent, against a national average of 69 per cent.

It also saw one of the lowest optimism scores (26.3 per cent), alongside Tasmania (23.7 per cent) and NT (23.3 per cent), and reported rising concern about crime and safety.

A map of Australia with happiness levels for each state.

Western Australia saw the opposite. It recorded the second-highest happiness in the country (70.6 per cent) and, by a clear margin, the highest optimism (47 per cent).

The NT and ACT post even stronger happiness numbers (75.3 per cent and 74 per cent respectively), but neither backed it up with strong optimism — showing that how people feel right now and how hopeful they are about the future don’t always move together.

A pessimistic nation

While happiness levels across states and territories sit in a fairly narrow band — roughly 66 to 75 per cent — optimism is where the real divergence shows up.

Western Australia leads the country at 47 per cent optimistic about its future direction, while Victoria (26.3 per cent), Tasmania (23.7 per cent) and the NT (23.3 per cent) trail a long way behind.

A map of Australia with optimism levels for each state.

The same pattern repeats by income and age.

Higher earners are more optimistic than lower earners (42 per cent versus 33 per cent), and older Australians are more optimistic than younger ones, with 42 per cent of gen X and baby boomers optimistic compared to 30 per cent of gen Z.

Men are also notably more optimistic than women (42 per cent versus 32 per cent).

Separating the optimists from the pessimists isn’t just income or age — it’s what’s on their mind.

Pessimistic Australians are dominated by near-term, concrete pressures. Seventy per cent cite cost of living as a top concern (compared to 54 per cent of optimists), 46 per cent crime and safety (compared to 29 per cent) and 25 per cent trust in government (compared to 13 per cent).

Optimistic Australians tended to be more concerned about longer-horizon issues — including the environment (26 per cent compared to pessimistic groups at 14 per cent), unemployment (16 per cent versus 10 cent), and global crisis (15 per cent versus 10 per cent).

The survey suggests a clear link between financial pressure and how hopeful Australians feel about what’s ahead.

Master the Top 10 Toughest Driving Theory Test Questions Most People Fail

0

Do you think you could pass your driving theory test if you had to take it again today?

For more than half of the population in Britain, the answer is no.

A recent survey conducted by the AA Driving School found that only 44% of UK drivers believe they would pass the theory exam if they were required to sit it again in 2026.

In stark contrast, 78% of the 12,475 licensed drivers surveyed expressed confidence that they would succeed in the practical driving test if they had to retake it.

This uncertainty about road rules knowledge, as defined in the Highway Code, is underscored exactly 30 years after the UK first introduced the theory test.

On 1 July 1996, the theory test was formally launched by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) – which became the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in 2014 – radically changing the way learners prepared for life on the road.

To mark the 30th anniversary, we’re putting your Highway Code knowledge to the test to see how many of the hardest theory test questions you can answer correctly…

These are the 10 questions most commonly answered incorrectly – how many can you get right?

SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM FOR THE ANSWERS

1. Which sign means that there may be people walking along the road?

58.9% answered incorrectly

2. You’re on a motorway. What must you do if there’s a red cross showing above every lane?

9. You’ve broken down on a two-way road. You have a warning triangle. At least how far from your vehicle should it be placed?

52.4% answered incorrectly

10. When may you overtake another vehicle on their left?

52.2% answered incorrectly

The theory test was introduced on 1 July 1996. It replaced an all-encompassing test where the learner answered road knowledge questions in a stationary vehicle before the practical test started

A brief history of 30 years of the theory test

The theory test is considered a relatively new statutory requirement within UK driving law.

Before it was introduced in 1996, learners were required to verbally answer questions about road safety while the vehicle was stationary during the practical assessment, rather than sitting an examination in a room in an approved test centre.

The rules were changed 30 years ago because the Highway Code was deemed too extensive and there wasn’t enough time to include the verbal test within the practical exam, so a separate test was agreed upon.

Before computers, the test took the form of a paper-based exam, with 35 multiple-choice questions – 15 fewer than today’s test. And there was no hazard perception test.

To pass, candidates had to answer 26 out of 35 questions correctly. However, within four months this was judged too easy, and candidates had to answer 30 questions correctly instead.

In 2000, the theory test underwent a digital transformation with touchscreen computers replacing the paper exam paper.

In 2002, the hazard perception test was introduced to assess a candidate’s responsiveness to ‘developing hazards’ on the road.

Today, learners need to understand a wide range of road-safety topics for the theory test, including the Highway Code, road signs and markings, rules of the road, vulnerable road users, motorway driving, hazard awareness, vehicle safety and how to respond to incidents or emergencies.

Candidates must answer 50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes, then take the hazard perception section – 14 video clips requiring quick responses to spot developing hazards.

Why drivers believe they wouldn’t pass today

Of the drivers who said they were unsure they’d pass a theory test today, 90 per cent cited out-of-date Highway Code knowledge as the reason, according to the AA Driving School’s research.

This was followed by rules of the road (59 per cent), knowledge of road signs (50 per cent), safety and vehicle knowledge (35 per cent), and hazard perception (33 per cent).

There’s a gender gap too: women were less confident than men about taking the theory test today.

Thirty-seven per cent of female drivers said they would be confident of passing, compared with 46 per cent of male drivers.

The same pattern appears for the practical test with 73 per cent of female drivers feeling confident compared with 80 per cent of male drivers.

Orlando Airport Chaos: Passengers Face Arrest Threats Amid Marathon Wait for Luggage

0

About a thousand travelers, exhausted from their journey, endured a five-hour wait to claim their checked luggage at a Florida airport. The delay, caused by intense storms, came with a warning that leaving the terminal without their belongings might result in arrest.

International visitors arriving on three Virgin Atlantic flights at Orlando International Airport were greeted with less-than-ideal circumstances as severe weather conditions hindered operations over the weekend, reported the Orlando Sentinel.

Returning home to Orlando after a two-week Croatian getaway, Carol Wick faced a tumultuous 48-hour return trip that was fraught with multiple flight delays and a cancellation.

“Three flights delayed, one canceled, and now I’m stuck at the Orlando airport. This marks over 48 hours trying to get home,” Wick expressed on Facebook.

Wick, who operates an international consulting business, found herself detained in customs due to the policy that prohibited anyone from exiting the area without their checked luggage in tow.

US Customs and Border Protection requires all international passengers to pass through customs with all their luggage as part of a “bags first” policy, according to Orlando International Airport.

The strict policy forced nearly 800 passengers to wait from 7 p.m. to beyond midnight waiting for their luggage to pass through to the terminal in order for them to leave.

Wick claimed that airport and airline officials threatened passengers with arrest if they left the terminal without their belongings.

“I travel all the time for work and I have never seen anything like this,” Wick told the outlet. “It was just the craziest thing I’ve ever experienced in my whole life and there’s no explanation.”

Airport officials and Orlando police denied the claims that passengers were threatened with arrest, according to Fox35 Orlando.

Another passenger documented their experience inside the “controlled border patrol area” saying they had to wait out the 90-minute storm followed by the 30-minute lightning-less time frame before the ground stop was lifted.

After the initial waiting period, the traveler noted that two Virgin Atlantic flights were processed through with their luggage, but the third flight’s baggage never came through.

Passengers aboard the third, not-so-lucky flight, allegedly had to wait five hours for their belongings without any food, vending machines or seating, passengers said through their poultry farm account.

“In all, we ended up waiting over FIVE HOURS for our luggage. It was one of those unfortunate travel incidents that you have no control over, and it sucks when you don’t get any support from the company you’ve spent your money with,” the user wrote.

Wick confirmed the dreadful travel experience, blasting airport officials for not explaining the reasoning behind the long delay.

“There’s no place to sit, there’s babies, there’s elderly people and we’re all laying, sitting on the ground trying to find something to lean on,” Wick told the Orlando Sentinel. “They were holding our bags hostage and no one ever gave us an explanation.”

Virgin Atlantic apologized to Wick in one of her Facebook posts.

“We understand how frustrating and disruptive unexpected weather conditions can be and we also recognize how challenging it can feel when there are no eateries available in the customs area,” an airport official wrote, according to the outlet. “We sincerely regret that these circumstances affected your plans and overall experience.”

The airline confirmed all passengers were eventually reunited with their luggage.

Pennsylvania Freight Train Derailment: Shelter-in-Place Order Lifted Following Hazmat Investigation

After a freight train derailed in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday afternoon, authorities confirmed that there were no leaks of hazardous materials. Consequently, previous orders to shelter in place and evacuate the area were rescinded.

“The situation has been assessed by hazmat teams, and the area is now secure,” declared the Bensalem Police Department in an official statement. “The public faces no danger. Residents and business owners are free to return to their locations.”

Reports from local news stations NBC10 and 6abc indicate that approximately 16 freight cars went off the rails around 2:15 p.m. situated between Street Road and Neshaminy Falls train station.

Emergency crews are responding to a freight train derailment in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, officials said Tuesday afternoon.

Officials confirmed that following the derailment on Tuesday in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, there were no hazardous material leaks detected. (WTXF)

Initially, authorities focused on verifying the contents of the derailed cars, mindful of the possibility that some might have been transporting hazardous materials.

Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., said no injuries had been reported and that his office was coordinating with local officials, first responders and the Department of Transportation.

“This was a freight derailment and did not occur on commuter rail lines,” Fitzpatrick wrote on X. “Local officials have reported several cars involved, which may contain hazardous materials.”

A one-mile shelter-in-place order was initially issued, with residents urged to stay indoors, bring pets inside, close windows, doors and vents, and turn off heating and air conditioning systems.

John Cena is moving forward with his hair restoration process after facing criticism from wrestling fans about his receding hairline.

The 49-year-old actor and WWE icon recently shaved his head as he embarks on the next stage of his follicular unit extraction (FUE) treatment.

Cena debuted his newly shaved head in a snapshot with Dr. Ken Anderson, which he posted on social media on Monday.

“Round 2 of FUE treatment and this time I went all in for best possible results,” Cena wrote in the post’s caption.

He also expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you @KenAndersonMD and the staff at Anderson Center for Hair for accompanying me on this journey!”

Dr. Anderson responded to the post, writing, ‘Always great seeing you, my friend.’

He continued, ‘Your commitment to the process and long-term hair health has made all the difference. I’m grateful for the trust you’ve placed in me and my team, and honored to continue being part of your journey.’

Cena underwent his first hair transplant in November, 2024, after wrestling fans held up cruel signs mocking his hair loss.

Speaking to People magazine about the ordeal last year, Cena admitted that he had desperately tried to hide his balding head from fans, only to be ridiculed in return.

In an interview with The Pat McAfee Show last April, the 17-time WWE world champion compared the experience to ‘bullying’.

‘You chant, and you make me feel small, and you embarrass me… Y’all don’t know what that’s like,’ he said.

‘That is straight-up bullying. That’s just not cool. I don’t like it,’ he continued.

‘So, thank you for bullying me into getting surgical hair replacement. That’s how far y’all push me.’

He also referred to his hair loss as ‘a genetic condition I can’t control’.

What’s your view on cosmetic procedures like hair transplants?

Cena currently has the No. 1 movie on Netflix with his new comedy Little Brother.

The film, which also stars comedian Eric André, follows a famous real estate agent whose perfect life is disrupted when an eccentric friend from school reappears.

Cena has a number of new movies in the pipeline, including Coyote vs. Acme, Matchbox: The Movie, and One Attempt Remaining.

The WWE legend recently retired from professional wrestling after having his final match against Gunther at WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Despite retiring from in-ring performance, Cena still works with the WWE as a host.

However, he did hint in an interview with Us Weekly that he could potentially return to the ring for the right price.

‘I hate speaking in absolutes … “Never” is a strong word,’ he said.

‘It would be financial suicide for someone to court me in a position where I would have another match, and I truly mean that. So if you’re in the business of torching currency, that’s the only way to get me back in the ring.’

Taylor Frankie Paul’s Former Partner Seeks Restraining Order and Sole Custody of Children

The intrigue intensifies for Taylor Frankie Paul, known for her role in The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.

SLOMW Star Taylor Frankie Paul's Ex Tate Files for Restraining Order and Sole Custody of Their Kids

In a recent development, her former husband, Tate Paul, has taken legal action by seeking a restraining order and requesting full custody of their children, Indy and Ocean, as of today.

According to documents uncovered by TMZ, Tate has integrated this request into their ongoing divorce case initiated in 2022.

According to a new report, her ex-husband, Tate Paul, filed a request for a restraining order and sole custody of their children, Indy and Ocean, today.

TMZ obtained the legal documents, which note that Tate filed the request with their 2022 divorce proceedings.

The documents also revealed Tate submitted five exhibits and a declaration in support of his request. The filings are sealed, and thus it is unknown what made Tate seek a restraining order.

The news comes fresh on the heels of a report that Taylor’s ex, Dakota Mortensen, called the cops on her again.

Taylor first revealed she had a new issue with law enforcement, writing on her Instagram Story, “Cops called on me again THIS WEEK… what are the odds? And it’s not people… It’s ONE person, the same person. It’s obsessive.”

While she didn’t say who was behind phoning the police, TMZ spoke to the Bluffdale Police Department, who told them that Dakota contacted them last Friday. He allegedly had concerns about the protective order he currently has with Taylor in regard to drop-off and custody of their shared child, Ever.

The outlet shared that officers reached out to Taylor to make sure they all had the same understanding regarding the protective order and drop-off hours. TMZ also stated that the matter is currently in the hands of the district attorney.

An insider close to the situation said there was no new altercation between Dakota and Taylor and that they have not seen or spoken to one another since their dual restraining orders were issued.

Recently, it was divulged that Taylor’s season of The Bachelorette may finally see the light of day, after it was shelved earlier this year amid domestic violence accusations and an explosive video that showed Taylor nearly hitting her daughter with a chair.

In the clip, Dakota tried to get away from an attack from Taylor that he felt was “physical abuse.”

“See, Taylor, this is all you do,” he told her as she kicked and hit him. “It’s the only thing you know how to do is hurt me. Hon, you think this is okay? It’s not okay.”

After insisting she doesn’t “give a f*ck,” Taylor grabbed a nearby chair and attempted to hit Dakota with it while her daughter was sitting on a nearby couch.

“Your daughter is right here,” Dakota retorted, as Taylor’s daughter began to sob. This led Dakota to beg Taylor to “please stop.”

“I’m done taking the blame for you,” he added, as she told him to  “get the f*ck out.”

Wil Wheaton Criticizes Dwayne Johnson for Remaining Silent on Political Opinions

0

In a fiery critique, Wil Wheaton has called out Dwayne Johnson for his recent decision to sideline his political opinions. The criticism stems from Johnson’s choice to remain apolitical, a stance that has provoked Wheaton’s ire.

Best known for his role in “Stand By Me,” Wheaton, who has been outspoken about his disapproval of former President Trump, didn’t mince words. He labeled Johnson a “coward” for opting to keep his political beliefs under wraps, a sentiment he shared with his followers Monday on Threads. His comments were a response to fellow actor George Takei’s post, which highlighted Johnson’s recent statements to Esquire magazine.

In the Esquire interview, Johnson, famed for his wrestling and acting career, explained his strategic retreat from the political arena. At 53, Johnson articulated his desire to concentrate on his professional endeavors without the distraction of political discourse casting a shadow.

“What I have learned through experience is that I need to keep — need, not want — the main thing the main thing,” Johnson stated, underscoring his intention to maintain focus on his career as a primary priority.

This decision signals a shift in Johnson’s approach, shedding light on how he plans to navigate his public persona moving forward, much to the chagrin of those who hoped he might wield his influence as a political force.

“The main thing for me, the thing that in the morning I swing my legs out of bed and I run towards, is creating. It’s art. It’s storytelling.”

“I’ve learned I’m going to keep my politics to myself,” he continued. “There are moments when, hey, there’s nothing we can’t talk about.

“If I’m wrong, I’ll tell you I’m wrong. Or if I feel like I got a leg up and this is the right way to go, I’ll share it with you.”

Johnson, who identifies as an Independent, also said he believes people with opposing political views should talk to one another instead of publicly attacking each other, adding, “I hate the slinging. I hate all the bulls— that comes with it.”

Wheaton has long been outspoken about his political views and campaigned for Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election.

Johnson publicly endorsed Joe Biden during the 2020 election, but ahead of the 2024 race, said that he would not endorse another presidential candidate, explaining he regretted his previous endorsement because it fueled division.

Still, the “Smashing Machine” star has spoken about Trump in recent years.

Johnson condemned the July 2024 assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania, saying political violence has “no room” in America.

“Whether you love Donald, don’t love Donald, it doesn’t matter. They tried to assassinate him. There’s no room for that,” Johnson said at The Value Conference in September 2024.

“Despite it being who we were in that moment, I still believe in my core that is not who we are as a country.

“So him standing up at that moment, we wanted to see that.”

Johnson also said Trump had been a fan of his wrestling career for years and attended his matches in New York City.

During an October 2024 appearance on “Six Feet Under with Mark Calaway,” Trump revealed Johnson reached out to him after the assassination attempt.

“When I was shot, you may have heard about it, Rock called Dana White and said, ‘I want to have his number. I want to have his number. What he did is sort of incredible,’” Trump said.

“He considered it bravery. I don’t know, to me, I considered it, ‘What’s going on here?’ But it was very nice, The Rock.”

Ted Danson’s Controversial Moment: Why Apologies Aren’t Enough

Back in 1993, the world was reminded in a rather jarring way that blackface has never been acceptable, a lesson that was painfully highlighted by actor Ted Danson’s ill-fated appearance at a New York Friars Club roast. His misguided attempt to tackle racial issues through the controversial use of blackface and racial slurs drew swift and significant backlash. Notably, leading the charge was David Dinkins, New York City’s first Black mayor. At the time, Danson was in a relationship with Whoopi Goldberg, which he mistakenly believed gave him a platform to comment on race, with the blackface lending a false sense of legitimacy. Realizing the gravity of his error, Danson remains committed to apologizing for this misstep.

Reflecting on the episode, Danson initially tried to reconcile his actions by insisting there was no malicious intention. However, he soon learned a vital lesson: in matters of race, intentions are meaningless in comparison to the impact one’s actions have. Speaking on the “Who’s With Me? with W. Kamau Bell” podcast in June 2026, he acknowledged this hard truth. Although many years have passed, Danson is resolute in his ongoing apologies. “I need to and want to apologize for the rest of my life,” he said, recognizing that new generations may encounter the offensive materials online and feel disappointed. His continuous apologies are a way to express his deep regret and to assure that he’s ashamed of it.

During the controversy, Goldberg defended Danson, arguing that the performance was meant to be shocking rather than offensive. She asserted in The New York Times in 1993 that it had unfairly victimized Danson, who did not deserve the backlash. Goldberg even disclosed that she had approved the act, adding, “If they knew me, they would know that Whoopi has never been about political correctness.” Despite Goldberg’s support, Danson recognized the misjudgment of his acts and has consistently acknowledged the harm they caused.

Ted Danson and Whoopi Goldberg split shortly after blackface fiasco

The repercussions of the roast extended beyond societal backlash. Just a month after the incident, Danson and Goldberg’s celebrated relationship came to an end. Although Goldberg had staunchly defended Danson, the controversy likely contributed to their split. Upon announcing their breakup, representatives pointed to the relentless public scrutiny their interracial romance faced as a significant factor. “In some ways, they seem so different as people. And I can’t believe that whole Friars Club thing helped,” a studio source reportedly told Variety in November 1993, as noted by the Eugene Register-Guard.

Yet, the blackface scandal wasn’t the only dramatic chapter in Danson and Goldberg’s relationship. Their romance sparked during the filming of “Made in America” in 1992, while Danson was still married to Casey Coates. The affair eventually led to a highly publicized divorce when Coates filed in June 1993. Media frenzy over their relationship was relentless, driven by the affair’s revelation and the mixed-race dynamic. “News were going after us, you know, mixed race and affair,” Danson remarked during the “Who’s With Me? with W. Kamau Bell” interview, summarizing the intense public interest that swirled around their high-profile relationship.

Because they were seen as an odd couple, the tabloids continuously came up with theories to justify their unlikely pairing. “It had to be just pure sex. That’s the only reason for a relationship like this. And there was a lot of mean,” Danson told Kamau Bell. By the time the blackface fiasco happened, their relationship was already on the rocks. “Whoopi and I had had an affair. And it was ending,” he said.

Florida Tragedy: Toddler Passes Away After Being Forgotten in SUV During Daycare Pick-Up

0

Tragedy struck in Florida on Monday when a 23-month-old boy was discovered dead inside an SUV parked outside A World of Discovery Academy. Authorities shared that the boy’s father, mistakenly believing he had dropped the toddler off at daycare, left him in the vehicle.

Responding to this tragic incident around 5:39 p.m. on Monday, both the Plantation Police Department and the Plantation Fire Department descended on the early childhood education center following a call about an unresponsive child left in a vehicle.

Upon arrival, firefighters could do no more than confirm the heart-rending news that the child had died at the scene.

Leslie Novoa, the proprietor of A World of Discovery Academy, told WSVN-TV that she and the toddler’s father made the desperate call to 911 after the child was tragically found in the backseat of the family SUV.

“This is hard for the parents, hard for us,” Novoa told the station. “This is sad to see this family – a wonderful family – to go through so much pain.”

Novoa said the father arrived at the daycare to pick up his son before realizing the child had never been dropped off.

“Unfortunately, the dad arrived to pick up his child, and when he arrived to the parking lot, he realized he forgot the child,” she said. “He never dropped off the child at the school.”

Novoa said she has known the family for six years and described them as loving parents whose three children attended the daycare.

“Like I said before, they’re a very loving family, and unfortunately, this happened,” Novoa said.

The daycare later released a statement expressing condolences and pledging support for the family.

“Our primary responsibility is the safety and well-being of our students and their families,” the daycare wrote.

“We communicated with our school community as soon as possible, and we remain in contact with our families to provide support during this incredibly difficult time,” it continued. “This student and their family are beloved members of our community. At this time, our focus is on supporting those grieving this immense loss.”

According to Kids and Car Safety, formerly KidsAndCars.org, about 40 children die in hot cars each year in the United States. The organization says roughly half of those deaths occur after a parent or caregiver unintentionally leaves a child inside a vehicle.

Plantation police said the circumstances surrounding the child’s death remain under investigation.

Katy Perry Faces Latest Career Setback

0

Katy Perry’s latest musical endeavor, the single “Watch It Burn,” has not quite ignited the success she might have hoped for. This recent release seems to have landed far short of expectations, marking yet another difficult chapter for the pop superstar.

Her fans anticipated a triumphant return to her pop-rock roots with “Watch It Burn,” but the track has struggled to make a significant impact. Instead of dominating the charts, it has barely made a ripple, signaling a harsh setback in what was intended to be a grand comeback.

Debuting last Friday, Perry’s single missed the mark on Spotify’s top 200 streaming charts, both globally and in the US, casting a shadow over its performance in a highly competitive music landscape.

As reported by news.com.au, the song’s most successful moment was reaching No. 127 in Brazil, a far cry from the global chart dominance Perry once enjoyed.

This lackluster performance comes even after Perry’s significant promotional efforts, which included a high-production music video release and live debuts at major music festivals such as Rock in Rio Lisboa on June 20 and O Son do Camiño in Spain on June 18. Despite these efforts, “Watch It Burn” has yet to set the music world alight.

Fans have been stunned by the star’s career slide, with one commenting, ‘People really have moved on from her? She was, NOT THAT LONG AGO, one of the biggest pop stars on earth.’

Another wrote, ‘It’s over’, while a third added, ‘Unfortunate, because this is the best song she’s released in quite some time honestly.’

So far, Watch It Burn has performed even worse than Perry’s last single, Bandaids, which debuted at No. 101 on the global Spotify chart before dropping off.

During a recent appearance on the Unfamous podcast, Perry explained that she was ‘wrestling with my darkness’ on the angsty Watch It Burn following a ‘tough year’.

‘I have not given myself permission to be angry my whole life over things I should be f***ing angry about,’ she said.

‘What I’ve done is I pushed it down, but I should be f***ing angry. I’m allowed to be angry for a f***ing moment.’

Perry, who at one point had a string of back-to-back hits, has struggled to get her new music to connect with audiences like it once did.

Her last two studio albums, 2020’s Smile and 2024’s 143, both tanked on the charts.

On top of that, her last few singles, including Bandaids and Lifetimes, all failed to crack the Billboard Hot 100.

The star’s last charting single was 2024’s Woman’s World, which peaked briefly at No. 63 on the Hot 100 but was savaged by both fans and music critics alike.

However, Perry has seen many of her old songs surge in streams thanks to viral success on social media apps like TikTok.

Her 2011 single The One That Got Away has become an unexpected mega-hit, racking up over 1.6billion streams on Spotify alone.

Another one of her Teenage Dream hits, the chart-topping ‘Last Friday Night’, is also surging back up the Spotify charts.

Daily Mail has contacted Universal Music for comment.

It comes as Perry was forced to cancel her show at the Belgian music festival Werchter Boutique on Saturday just hours before taking to the stage.

The songstress shared a post to Instagram as she explained to fans that she had ‘no choice’ but to pull the plug on the show.

Perry had been slated to close out the festival on Saturday following Pitbull’s set, but dangerous weather conditions prevented her from doing so.

‘Sadly my set @WerchterBoutique tonight can’t happen due to a government mandated cancellation because of the incoming inclement weather and crowd safety concerns,’ she penned in the caption.

The Roar hitmaker said that she had been backstage getting ready for her show ‘when this news was delivered and they gave me no choice.’

‘I am just as unhappy as you are,’ she continued, before adding that the situation ‘is beyond my control’ and the safety of attendees is the main priority.

‘I am sorry I can’t change the weather, and even sorrier that all of us can’t be together tonight.’

Perry concluded her message to fans by expressing her disappointment that she cannot celebrate her return to the festival stage after her last appearance back in 2009.

‘I was even gonna wear the same outfit from that 2009 show again. I love you all, and please get home safe,’ the singer wrote along with a sad face emoji.

The last-minute cancellation of Perry’s show was due to ‘severe thunderstorms’ that were predicted to hit the area.

The decision was to ‘ensure that the exit of visitors proceeds in a safe and orderly manner, allowing everyone to return home calmly. The safety and health of everyone present is always our top priority.’
