Five Essential Tests to Assess Strength, Balance, and Control for Those Over 50

>

As we age, maintaining core strength becomes pivotal in ensuring our bodies function smoothly through daily activities. A robust core not only improves posture and enhances balance but also enables us to move confidently, whether carrying groceries or rising from a seated position. It plays a critical role in spinal support and provides a stable foundation for the movement of hips and shoulders.

Defining “good core strength” can often seem elusive. Having defined abs isn’t the sole indicator, and doing numerous crunches doesn’t always equate to adequate support for your body. Key indicators of core strength include how long you can maintain a position, your ability to resist unnecessary movements, and keeping your core engaged while moving your limbs.

To simplify the assessment of core strength, the following five exercises offer quantifiable measures: front plank, side plank, dead bug, glute bridge hold, and bird dog. Each exercise provides unique insight into your core’s functionality. Successfully executing all five with proper technique signifies a strong core for individuals over 50.

4 Wall Exercises That Restore Leg Strength Faster Than Yoga After 60

Forearm Plank

The forearm plank gives you a clean look at core endurance. Your abs have to brace, your glutes help control your hips, and your shoulders support your upper body. It’s simple, but the clock makes it honest. A strong plank shows you can create tension and hold alignment without needing movement to reset.

How to Do It:

  1. Place your forearms on the floor with your elbows under your shoulders.
  2. Extend your legs behind you with your feet about hip-width apart.
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes.
  4. Hold a straight line from your head to your heels.
  5. Breathe steadily while keeping your hips level.
  6. Stop when your hips drop, your back arches, or your shoulders lose position.

Movement Standard: Your plank counts when your body stays in a straight line, your hips remain level, and your lower back stays neutral.

Goal After 50: Hold for 60 seconds with clean form.

Best Variations: Incline Plank, High Plank, RKC Plank, Stability Ball Plank.

Side Plank

The side plank tests lateral core strength, which helps you stay stable side-to-side. Your obliques, hips, and shoulders all work together to keep your body stacked. This move also challenges each side on its own, which makes it useful for spotting strength gaps between sides.

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your side with your legs straight and your feet stacked.
  2. Place your elbow directly under your shoulder.
  3. Brace your core before lifting your hips.
  4. Lift your hips until your body forms a straight line.
  5. Keep your shoulders stacked and your hips level.
  6. Hold the position, then switch sides.

Movement Standard: Your side plank counts when your hips stay lifted, your body stays in a straight line, and your torso doesn’t rotate.

Goal After 50: Hold for 30 seconds per side with clean form.

Best Variations: Bent-Knee Side Plank, Side Plank from Feet, Side Plank with Reach, Elevated Side Plank.

4 Simple Exercises That Strengthen Your Muscles More Than Lunges After 50

Dead Bug

The dead bug looks easy until you slow it down and do it well. It trains your core to hold your ribs and pelvis in position while your arms and legs move. This carries over well to walking, lifting, and any movement where your limbs move while your trunk stays steady.

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your arms reaching toward the ceiling.
  2. Lift your knees over your hips with your legs bent at 90 degrees.
  3. Press your lower back gently toward the floor.
  4. Extend one arm and the opposite leg away from your body.
  5. Return to the starting position with control.
  6. Alternate sides until you complete all reps.

Movement Standard: Each rep counts when your lower back stays down, your ribs stay controlled, and your arm and leg move without rushing.

Goal After 50: Complete 10 controlled reps per side.

Best Variations: Heel Tap Dead Bug, Wall Press Dead Bug, Banded Dead Bug, Weighted Dead Bug.

Glute Bridge Hold

A strong core needs strong hips behind it. The glute bridge hold trains your glutes, hamstrings, and deep core to keep your pelvis steady. It also gives you a simple way to check whether your hips can hold position without shifting the work into your lower back.

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat.
  2. Place your feet about hip-width apart.
  3. Brace your core before lifting your hips.
  4. Press through your heels and lift your hips.
  5. Squeeze your glutes at the top.
  6. Hold the position while keeping your hips level.

Movement Standard: Your bridge counts when your shoulders, hips, and knees form a straight line and your glutes stay engaged.

Goal After 50: Hold for 60 seconds with steady hips.

Best Variations: Marching Bridge, Single-Leg Bridge, Banded Bridge Hold, Elevated Bridge.

5 Chair Exercises That Restore Knee Strength Faster Than Gym Sessions After 60

Bird Dog

The bird dog tests coordination, balance, and trunk control. Your core has to stay steady while one arm and the opposite leg move. It’s basic, joint-friendly, and useful for training the body to stay organized without a lot of load.

How to Do It:

  1. Start on your hands and knees with your hands under your shoulders.
  2. Brace your core and keep your back flat.
  3. Reach one arm forward and the opposite leg back.
  4. Pause briefly with your hips square to the floor.
  5. Return to the starting position with control.
  6. Alternate sides until you complete all reps.

Movement Standard: Each rep counts when your hips stay square, your back stays flat, and your arm and leg move without twisting your torso.

Goal After 50: Complete 10 controlled reps per side.

Best Variations: Bird Dog Hold, Bird Dog Row, Mini-Band Bird Dog, Elbow-to-Knee Bird Dog.

How to Build Core Strength After 50

Core training works best when it stays consistent and clean. You don’t need to turn every session into a long ab circuit. A few focused exercises done well can improve how your midsection supports your spine, hips, and shoulders. The goal is to build control you can use during regular movement, not just during a workout. Start with the versions you can perform well, then add time, reps, or difficulty as your form improves.

  • Train your core three to four times per week: Short sessions work well when the reps stay controlled.
  • Prioritize position first: Good alignment makes each move more useful and keeps the test honest.
  • Use measurable goals: Track hold times, reps per side, and how clean each rep feels.
  • Build both front and side strength: Planks and side planks train different parts of your core.
  • Include hip-focused work: Bridges help your glutes support your pelvis and lower back.
  • Slow the reps down: Controlled movement builds better coordination and tension.
  • Retest every few weeks: Use the same standards so you can see real progress.

If you can complete these five core moves with the listed standards, you’ve built a strong foundation after 50. Your core can brace, stabilize, resist movement, and support the rest of your body through everyday activity.

The much-anticipated transfer window has officially kicked off, remaining open until September 1. This period promises to be bustling with clubs eager to secure marquee signings for the upcoming season. Here’s a rundown of today’s key stories from Simon Jones and the Daily Mail Sport team…

German giants in talks over Burnley defender

RB Leipzig has initiated discussions with Burnley regarding a potential acquisition of their center back, Maxime Esteve.

The Bundesliga club is prepared to make an offer in the region of £21 million for the talented 24-year-old, who has experience playing for France at the Olympic level.

Pandur seals move north of the border

In a completed transfer, Rangers have secured Hull’s goalkeeper Ivor Pandur for £6 million.

Ivor Pandur has left newly-promoted Hull to join Rangers

Following the recent promotion, Ivor Pandur has departed from Hull to take on a new challenge with Rangers.

The 26-year-old, who is at the World Cup with Croatia, has signed a four-year deal.

Pandur kept clean sheets in every play-off game as Hull won promotion to the Premier League.

Jack Butland is close to sealing his £3m switch in the opposite direction.

Butland has made over 150 appearances for Rangers, having previously been at Stoke City, Crystal Palace and Manchester United.

Pandur said: ‘I am honoured and privileged to sign for such a big club with so much history. This club knows how to win and that’s exactly why I am joining Rangers.

‘I can’t wait to hear the noise of Ibrox for the first time and I hope we will be successful together.’

Coventry close on Amenda

Coventry are close to agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt for centre back Aurele Amenda.

As Daily Mail Sport reported yesterday, talks have been advancing and the fee is expected to be worth around £17.2million including add-ons.

The 22-year-old is finalising a long-term contract with Coventry ahead of linking up with Frank Lampard’s squad.

Gunners interested in ex-Leeds keeper

Arsenal are showing interest in Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at Elland Road and expected to leave this summer.

Arsenal cover for David Raya should Kepa Arrizabalaga leave. The Spaniard is understood to have a £5m clause and wants to play more regularly.

Meanwhile, Leeds have confirmed the sale of centre-back Pascal Struijk to Brighton in a deal worth around £18m plus a sell-on clause.

Struijk, who signed on a free from Ajax, has agreed a five-year deal with the Seagulls.

Struijk, who was Leeds’ longest-serving player, was entering the final year of his deal at Elland Road and was offered a significantly improved contract to stay.

However, Leeds respected his desire for a new challenge and sanctioned his move to Brighton.

Leeds said in a statement: ‘Last summer, the decision was taken to keep all key players at Elland Road, to give the club the best possible chance of Premier League survival, with the expectation that player sales would be needed to remain PSR (Profit & Sustainability Rules) compliant over a three-year accounting window ending 30th June 2026.

‘The club’s higher than expected 14th place finish and run to the Emirates FA Cup semi-final vindicated this decision, with the increased income and single sale of Struijk ensuring the club remains within PSR limits.’

Liverpool youngster heading to Wanderers

Liverpool midfielder Luca Stephenson is poised to join Bolton Wanderers in a deal worth £800,000.

Blackburn Rovers had also shown interest but the 22-year-old is due to travel for a medical on Wednesday.

The deal will include a sell on, potentially around 17.5 per cent for the versatile midfielder who spent last two seasons on loan with Dundee United.

Robins consider bid for Orient star

Bristol City are considering a revised bid for Leyton Orient striker Dom Ballard after having an opening offer rejected.

The former Southampton striker enjoyed a sensational campaign for Richie Wellens’ side, winning the League One golden boot with 23 goals as the O’s survived on the final day of the season.

West Ham have also shown interest but their pursuit has been delayed while they await the appointment of Nils Koppen as their new head of recruitment.

Regardless, Bristol City are in pole position while Southampton retain a sell on clause of 22 per cent.

Spurs avoid Balogun after winning race for Fernandes

Tottenham are not pursuing a move for Monaco forward Folarin Balogun.

The former Arsenal striker has interest from a number of clubs in Europe and the Premier League following his performances last season and his continued form with USA at the World Cup. Arsenal also possess a 17.5 per cent sell-on clause.

However, Tottenham, who have been linked, are looking at other targets. Spurs appear to have won the £85million race for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes after outbidding Manchester United.

United pushed hard to sign Fernandes but there is a firm belief they will only buy players at the right valuation and players who really want to play for the club.

Tottenham have been aggressive in their pursuit of targets for Roberto de Zerbi and are intent on adding Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali also.

Juventus eye Tottenham goalkeeper Vicario

Juventus are showing an interest in Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Vicario is allowed to leave Spurs this summer after Roberto De Zerbi decided Antonin Kinsky – who recently signed a new five-year deal – would be his long-term No. 1.

Spurs have already acquired former Newcastle United and Burnley shot-stopper Martin Dubravka on a free transfer to play understudy to Kinsky, leaving Vicario surplus to requirements.

Speaking to the Italian press, Juventus CEO Giovanni Carnevali confirmed Vicario is one of several goalkeeper options they are assessing.

Meanwhile, World Cup winner and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is admired. Martinez is under contract at Aston Villa until 2029.

‘It’s been a real journey to get here and a nice story already, and I’m looking forward to what lies ahead over the next months and years.

‘Everyone around the Club feels that we can have a successful season and I want to contribute to that. We want to give the fans what they want and what this Club deserves.’

De Zerbi added: ‘Toni was outstanding over the final seven games of the season and a key part of what we achieved in that period.

‘I am delighted he has committed his future to the Club. He has earned this new contract, not only with his performances but also his professionalism and desire to improve.

‘We have huge belief in what Toni can become. He is still young, has enormous potential and I know that Spurs is the perfect place for him to continue to develop into one of the best goalkeepers in Europe.’

Robert Downey Jr.’s Inspiring Rise: How He Transformed into a Real-Life Hero After Hitting Rock Bottom

For Robert Downey Jr., the most challenging aspect of transforming his life wasn’t spending time in prison. “The real struggle is making the decision,” he once shared about achieving sobriety in 2003.

This doesn’t imply that Downey, now 61, had an easy road. Celebrated for his role in the film Oppenheimer, the Oscar-winning actor developed a drug addiction at the tender age of 8. This was just two years after his father, the late director and screenwriter Robert Downey Sr., first introduced him to marijuana. The following thirty years were marked by recurring stints in rehab, confrontations with the law, and ultimately, a profound personal transformation that led him to become one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.

“Going from serving time to becoming the world’s highest-paid actor is a rare feat,” remarked Ben Falk, author of Robert Downey Jr.: The Fall and Rise of the Comeback Kid, in an exclusive conversation with Us Weekly. “Although he’s always believed in his talent, one could assume that even Robert finds his own journey unbelievable.”

After receiving critical praise for portraying a young addict in 1987’s Less Than Zero, life seemed to parallel art for Downey Jr. “The part was like a glimpse into my future,” he confessed to The Guardian in 2003. “At the time, the character felt like an exaggerated version of myself. Over time, though, my own life began to mirror the character in unexpected ways.”

Robert Downey Jr. Through the Years 012

Today, Robert Downey Jr. is regarded as one of the biggest box office draws in history, yet his path to becoming a Hollywood icon was anything but straight. Born in April 1965, he is the younger child of the late filmmaker and actor Robert Downey Sr. and actress Elsie Ann Ford, embarking on a rollercoaster of personal and professional highs and lows to secure his legendary status.

Shortly after completing the movie, Downey entered rehab for the first time, though it wasn’t until nearly a decade later that his life began to spiral out of control. In early 1996, his concerned friends Sean Penn and Dennis Quaid drove him back to rehab, but he checked out just days later. A series of life-altering arrests ensued.

Police caught Downey driving 70 mph in a 50 mph zone on the Pacific Coast Highway in Los Angeles that June. After pulling him over for speeding, officers found crack, cocaine, heroin and a loaded revolver inside his Ford Explorer, leading to his arrest on felony charges of possession of drugs and a concealed weapon as well as driving under the influence.

Three weeks later, police received a phone call about an unconscious and intoxicated intruder inside a Malibu home. They responded to the scene and discovered Downey asleep in an 11-year-old boy’s bed just 17 houses away from his own.

“He got real cozy,” homeowner Bill Curtis, who declined to press trespassing charges against the troubled actor, later told the Los Angeles Times, noting that Downey had stripped down to a T-shirt and boxers, tucked himself in and fallen asleep. After paramedics revived him, he looked “groggy” and “gaunt,” according to Curtis, who noted that the movie star made funny faces at his young daughter as police escorted him out of the house. “He still took out time to be entertaining.”

Sarah Jessica Parker’s 7 Rocky Years With Troubled Robert Downey Jr: ‘I Just Didn’t Want Him To Die’

Long before her marriage to Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker counted Robert Downey Jr. as her great love — but, unsurprisingly, their relationship was not an easy one. Two child stars moving in together at 18 after a few weeks of dating — what could possibly go wrong? Let’s find out … How it Began Both […]

Downey’s attorney Charles English told reporters at the time that his client had apologized to the Curtis family for what the media dubbed the “Goldilocks” incident. “Mr. Downey has a problem,” English stated. “He’s taking care of it. He appreciates everyone’s concern.”

The next day, L.A. Judge Lawrence Mira, known as the “Judge to the Stars,” ordered Downey to seek treatment, but the Chaplin star had other plans in mind. He escaped from rehab less than 48 hours later and hitchhiked to a friend’s nearby home, only to be captured and sent to jail for nine days. Mira later sentenced Downey to six months in treatment, three years of probation and mandatory drug testing. Despite repeated rehab stays, Downey continued relapsing and violating probation. By 1999, the judge had enough.

“It’s like I’ve got a shotgun in my mouth with my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gun metal,” Downey said in court that August before Mira made good on his earlier threat and sentenced him to three years in the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran.

The actor’s defense lawyer Robert Shapiro was not shocked. “The judge had said from day one… ‘I told him before you entered the case as his attorney that any further violations, he would go to prison. And I’m keeping my word. He’s going to prison,’” Shapiro recalls to Us, adding that he had hoped Mira would have treated his client “as a person with a disease, not as a criminal.” (In 2023, Downey griped on the “Armchair Expert” podcast that he’d been “oversentenced by an angry judge.”)

While Downey had spent time in jails before, entering prison was a wake-up call. “I thought it would be a lot smaller and tame,” he admitted to Vanity Fair in August 2000. “I was like, Oh my God — what the f***? I thought it was going to be, like, the Corcoran State Prison and Theme Park, and I was f***ing speechless.”

Downey’s famous friends, meanwhile, remained hopeful that he would be able to turn his life — and career — around upon his release. “We need Robert Downey free!” Penn told the magazine. “We need him, just selfishly speaking, as an actor. His talent raises the bar. And the bar has dropped so low ever since they put him behind bars.” Michael Douglas agreed, “I’m deeply fond of him… I sure hope he gets himself squared away. I guess we’ll have to wait for the next chapter.”

His comeback wouldn’t happen overnight. Within months of his release, Downey was arrested twice more, leading to another stint in rehab, more probation and his firing from Ally McBeal. But eventually, recovery finally stuck.

“Job one is get out of that cave,” Downey told Vanity Fair in 2014 of making a name for himself again after prison. “A lot of people do get out but don’t change. So the thing is to get out and recognize the significance of that aggressive denial of your fate, come through the crucible forged into a stronger metal.”

Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has everyone talking — including his former costars. After Downey, 59, took to the stage at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 27, to reveal he will play Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Ruffalo […]

Downey got sober in July 2003 and made his return to the big screen in The Singing Detective that October. His costar Mel Gibson paid his insurance bond in order for him to be cast. Then came the role that changed everything. In 2006, Marvel Studios took a chance on Downey, casting him as Iron Man despite concerns over his troubled past. His first turn as the superhero debuted in May 2008, with nine more Marvel movies following suit, cementing his status as one of the highest-paid actors of all time.

“It’s really an amazing story, because not only did he come back, but he came back with a vengeance,” crisis PR management expert Gary Rosen notes to Us. “I mean, he came back and literally became a superhero.”

Today, Downey is a vocal advocate for prison reform who credits his wife, Susan Downey, with supporting his recovery. (The couple wed in 2005 and share son Exton, 14, and daughter Avri, 11. Downey was previously married to Deborah Falconer, with whom he shares son Indio, 32. Falconer left Downey in 1996 after his first arrests, and they officially divorced in 2004.)

“[Susan] gave him direction, gave him purpose, told him she would leave if he carried on doing drugs,” Falk says. “Everyone always knew he had talent; they always wanted to cast him in stuff. She has kept him on the straight and narrow.”

Robert Downey Jr. and wife Susan Downey have unlocked the secret to a successful marriage: “respect.” After 18 years as a married couple, the duo is “as much in love today as they were in the days after they met,” a source exclusively reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly. “They’re the envy of […]

In 2015, then-California Gov. Jerry Brown issued a “full and unconditional pardon” of Downey’s 1996 drug conviction due to his “exemplary behavior” in recent years.

“If you wrote it as a movie, the audience would think it was too far-fetched,” Falk says. “But he’s worked on his sobriety, he’s got a loving family and it shows [that] if you’re suffering from addiction, you can get through it and thrive. I think that could and should be his greatest legacy.”

Downey’s story has also helped other celebrities who have battled substance abuse, including fellow actors Wes Bentley and Armie Hammer. “Anyone in Hollywood who suffers from any sort of addiction issues… [and] decides to get sober, that guy will find you, and he will help you,” Hammer said on Piers Morgan Uncensored in 2024.

“Hollywood can be forgiving, but you have to be genuine,” Rosen muses. ” The most successful people in this business are genuine, and you can’t fool the public. Robert Downey Jr. was very public about his private problems, dealt with them head-on and came back in such a major way, and the public embraced him for it, and then his talent is what catapulted him to the top, and his talent is incredible. He’s the ultimate movie star.”

Fox Anchor Issues Stark Warning to Trump Amid Growing MAGA Tensions Over Lenient Deportation Policies

0

A Fox News host has issued a stark warning, stating that supporters of Donald Trump may choose to abstain from voting in the upcoming November midterm elections if the president does not fulfill his pledge to implement widespread deportations.

Tomi Lahren expressed her concern on the platform X, responding to a segment from a recent CNN’s State of the Union interview aired on Sunday, where she commented on the potential reaction of her fellow conservatives.

The shared clip featured Markwayne Mullin, the Department of Homeland Security Secretary, explaining to Jake Tapper that the DHS is not prepared to carry out mass deportations of the approximately 350,000 Haitians poised to lose their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) next year.

Instead, Secretary Mullin noted that these individuals “will have a couple of choices” allowing them the possibility of remaining in the United States.

He elaborated, saying, “They can apply for permanent residency, opt for a temporary visa if they wish, or decide to return. Should they choose to return, we will assist them with that process.”

Lahren, 33, was left unsatisfied. She reacted by bringing up how the administration has also failed to deliver on promised ID requirements for American voters. Lahren is a longtime advocate of Trump’s promised approach to curbing illegal immigration.

‘So no voter ID and now mass deportations aren’t happening either. Why do we elect Republicans?’ she raged during a commercial break of her Big Weekend Show.

‘Don’t be surprised when conservatives stay home in November. I’m not advocating for it but I won’t be surprised,’ the Fox News and OutKick host warned.

Lahren was reacting to a CNN State of the Union interview from where Homeland Security head Markwayne Mullin told Jake Tapper that Haitians set to lose Temporary Protected Status (TPS) keeping them in the country next year ‘have a couple of choices’

A Supreme Court decision on Thursday gave the administration the power to mass deport those with TPS.

TPS was granted for Haitians way back in 2010, following the devastating earthquake that month that killed roughly 220,000.

The disaster paved the way for the rise of youth gangs and other armed groups for more than a decade.

The post promptly received more than 400,000 views.

Top administration officials like White House border czar Tom Homan and former DHS head Kristi Noem have aired reinforced plans to execute mass deportations.

Mullin told those set to lose the protection to ‘either try to fill out the paperwork and be here underneath a permanent status, or we will help you get back to your country’ during his spot on CNN.

‘We will actually give you a plane ticket, plus roughly $2,100, to help you re-establish when you get there,’ he explained.

After a Thursday ruling from the Supreme court, the administration has the authority to end TPS for hundreds of thousands of Haitians

He emphasized to Tapper how TPS, as its name already suggests, ‘is not permanent.’

‘The whole time these individuals have been here underneath the Temporary Protected Status, they could have applied for a visa,’ he said.

‘They could have applied for LPR [Lawful Permanent Resident status]. They could have applied for different directions,’ Mullin explained.

Immigrants from 11 other countries also receive TPS. All are set to lose the protection when the policy signed into law by George H.W. Bush expires in February.

Congress created the qualification in 1990 to provide ‘short-term humanitarian relief’ for aliens who cannot safely return to their homes, the Supreme Court reiterated in its ruling on Thursday.

Mullin – a former Oklahoma senator – was tapped to replace Noem last month. Lahren interned for then-Congresswoman Noem after college in South Dakota.

She became a co-host of The Big Weekend Show alongside Joey Jones last year, after 8 years with Fox News.

US Ally Suggests Collaborating with Iran on Strait of Hormuz Toll Initiative

0

Iran and Oman have reached a consensus to advance a scheme that imposes “voluntary” charges on vessels traversing the Strait of Hormuz, as highlighted in several reports.

Initially, Oman opposed Iran’s idea of implementing tolls in this strategically crucial passageway. However, Oman has now presented a formal plan to the United States and other allied nations, suggesting that shipping companies should contribute service fees for passage through the strait, according to a report by the New York Times.

The government of Oman asserts that their proposal draws inspiration from the fee structure used in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore in Southeast Asia, where shippers voluntarily contribute for safe passage.

Although a diplomat from the region informed the Times that the charges would be non-mandatory, Iranian officials maintain that these payments will, in fact, be compulsory.

The initiative also bears a significant difference from the toll setup in the Strait of Malacca — over 15 years, the Aids to Navigation Fund, managed by Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, has accumulated a mere $23 million.

Iran projected Hormuz tolls could bring in $40 billion per year.

Details of the plan come just a day after Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi expressed support for a joint plan with Iran to impose “maritime service fees” on the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s Press TV reported.

Al-Busaidi said Muscat remains opposed to Iran’s direct toll scheme for the critical oil choke point, but said fees were necessary to keep navigation in the waters safe.

“Some services may include enhancing navigational safety, protecting waters from pollution, and increasing preparedness to deal with accidents or emergencies,” the minister said of the collection plan.

The position echoes a joint statement from Tehran and Muscat last week that the governments refused to rule out collecting fees in the Strait of Hormuz after the Trump administration publicly insisted that Tehran can’t charge tolls.

The developments threaten to permanently change the strait, which oversees the transport of 20% of the world’s oil supply.

Before the US and Israel launched its war with Iran, the international shipping route was free and open to the more than 130 vessels that sailed through its waters every day.

It remains unclear whether the US will accept Oman’s plan to charge voluntary service fees following President Trump’s repeated insistence that the Strait of Hormuz should remain free waters for all.

The president previously described any tolls or fees schemes along the strait as “unacceptable,” going as far as to threaten Oman if it did not “behave just like everybody else.”

California Movers Accused of Doubling Costs and Holding Couple’s Belongings Hostage, Report Claims

A California couple’s plans to relocate have been thrown into disarray as they claim a moving company is holding their belongings hostage after unexpectedly doubling the price they initially agreed upon.

It’s been almost a month since John Nelson and his wife embarked on a move from Oceanside to North Carolina, a journey that turned problematic in late May. As per CBS 8’s reporting, the couple described the experience as deeply unsettling.

Initially, the couple had entered into an agreement with a moving broker, settling on a full-service package for just over $16,000, with a $7,000 deposit paid in advance.

However, on the scheduled moving day, the company reportedly hiked the price to $32,000, claiming the couple’s inventory was larger than originally estimated.

While Nelson ultimately agreed to move forward to avoid losing his deposit, he later alleged that the company attempted to charge another round of additional fees upon delivery.

According to the couple, the company attempted to deliver their belongings on June 3 — one week before the date Nelson said they would be available to receive them, CBS 8 reported.

The failed delivery attempt allegedly led the contractors to issue an additional redelivery fee, according to the report.

“They’ve got $30,000 and they’ve got our stuff… and they’re basically holding it for ransom,” Nelson said.

“When you move, it’s an exciting thing…you never expect for somebody to take your stuff and not deliver it,” he added.

Nelson also claimed the initial delivery attempt may have been staged to pressure the couple into paying additional charges, alleging that the moving truck captured on video did not appear to be the same vehicle used to load their belongings.

“I think they just pulled up an empty truck to stage a charade,” he said.

“As far as I’m concerned, they’ve got stolen property that’s crossed state lines,” Nelson added.

Nelson and his wife reportedly filed police reports in both Oceanside and their new city in North Carolina.

Complaints were also filed with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), a dispute-resolution service that helps consumers address issues with companies, the outlet said.

According to CBS 8, the broker has received 280 complaints with the BBB over the past three years.

The broker reportedly disputed the couple’s claims but said it was working to find a resolution.

Peru hiking trip takes a mysterious turn as teacher goes missing

The sudden disappearance of a Virginia teacher during a planned hiking expedition in Peru has left his family desperately searching for answers and hoping for his safe return.

Ian Thomas Treger, 29, intended to complete his trek to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park by around May 20. However, concern mounted when his family was unable to reach him, raising alarms about his whereabouts.

Initially, his mother, Michelle Ludwig, thought her son might be having trouble communicating due to poor cell phone reception in the remote Andes region. She shared this with The News-Gazette.

Ludwig also speculated that he may have spontaneously decided to take a detour to visit Peru’s renowned Machu Picchu archaeological site.

“I wasn’t too worried because he often changes his plans,” she commented, noting that her son is an Eagle Scout with extensive outdoor experience. She remains hopeful given his familiarity with navigating the wilderness.

According to his Instagram profile, he is also very well-traveled, with his last post showing him in Ecuador on April 16.

Ludwig said he traveled to Peru after wrapping up his teaching year at Ecuador’s Galápagos Language Academy.

She said he wanted to experience Jubilee Month, a month-long celebration in Cusco, a city in the Peruvian Andes.

His distraught mother said she notified local authorities that Treger was missing on May 26, but an alert wasn’t issued by Peruo’s national police until June 11 – when she arrived to join in the search for her son.

‘I really thought something was happening, that they were looking for my son. But they weren’t,’ she told the outlet.

Two Peruvian police divisions, the High Mountain Rescue Police and the Missing Persons Divison have been assisting in the search for Treger, Ludwig said.

She has also hired private guides to help look for her child.

‘It’s been a real challenge finding information,’ Ludwig stated.

A police alert has described Treger as 5’10”, white, with blond hair and blue eyes. He also has small tattoos that feature two pairs of whale sharks on his right calf.

Anyone with information on Treger has been urged to call the Peruvian authorities or Ludwig directly.

She has also launched a GoFundMe to help raise money for her efforts.

‘Everyone who knows or has met Ian enjoys his sense of humor, appreciates his love of life, is fascinated by his many tales of travel, and will never forget his beautiful smile & bright blue eyes,’ she wrote.

As of Tuesday evening, more than $26,000 had been raised.

A local site at Collierstown Presbyterian Church is also collecting donations, per the outlet.

Treger grew up in Effinger, Virginia, where he was a Boy Scout, and eventually an Eagle Scout.

He obtained a Wilderness First Aid certification while attending colleged at Washington and Lee, she told the publication.

During his senior year, he led one of the school’s Appalachian Adventure trips before graduating in 2020.

‘He loves the outdoors and prefers to be away from crowds and the destinations popular with tourists. He is as comfortable hiking with friends as he is adventuring alone,’ she added.

Taylor Parker’s Family: Their Whereabouts After Pregnancy Hoax and Murder Conviction Revealed

0

After Taylor Parker was convicted of murdering Reagan Simmons Hancock, her relatives have distanced themselves, testifying during the trial but opting out of her life thereafter.

While her former partner, Wade Griffin, and his acquaintances made their voices heard in Netflix’s series Maternal Instinct, Parker’s family chose to limit their input to their courtroom statements.

To get an insight into the individuals who raised and shared their lives with Parker, explore the information provided below:

Who is Taylor Parker’s mother?

According to KTAL, Shona Prior spoke in court regarding a medical emergency that resulted in Parker undergoing a hysterectomy in 2015.

When Parker was under anesthesia due to complications from endometriosis, including cysts and scarring, doctors sought consent from Prior and Parker’s then-husband, Tommy Wacasey, to perform a crucial procedure, as reported by the news outlet.

“I don’t think she was upset until after they got home,” Prior told the court. “She expressed a little bit of anger about having a hysterectomy. I think she was planning on having more children.”

During the 2022 trial, Prior had also given testimony about Parker’s childhood and pregnancy hoax.

“Not much you can do about a fake pregnancy,” Prior said, according to People. “She knew she wasn’t pregnant. We knew she wasn’t pregnant. There was no need to come up with a plan. We figured the lie would be exposed. He would figure it out.”

Prior opted not to participate in Maternal Instinct and has largely stayed out of the public eye since the trial.

Who is Taylor Parker’s father?

Prior and Mark Morton divorced in 2005. Parker and her brother Zachary Morton split time living with both parents, according to KTAL News.

While Parker’s dad was often discussed, Morton himself never actually testified during the murder trial or sentencing proceedings, per The Tab.

According to KTAL, Prior testified that Morton attended Parker’s gender reveal party while knowing their daughter was unable to become pregnant.

Like Prior, Morton didn’t appear in Maternal Instinct and has not given interviews about his daughter’s case.

Who is Taylor Parker’s brother?

Zachary Morton testified about his frustrations with Parker leading up to her killing Hancock and removing Hancock’s unborn child from her womb.

“I was tired of the lies,” he said, per KTAL News. “If she wants to lie, feel free, but the moment you bring me into a lie it becomes my problem, and I don’t want anybody misrepresenting me or lying and bashing me.”

Parker’s brother has yet to speak on her crimes outside of court testimony, nor has he shared any details about their family’s life in the aftermath of her conviction. He also did not appear in Maternal Instinct.

Where are Taylor Parker’s children today?

Parker was just 17 years old when she gave birth to a daughter she shared with then-boyfriend Donald Whiteside, according to the court records. She later welcomed a son with Wacasey.

After Parker’s conviction, Prior was granted custody of her granddaughter and testified that she would seek counseling for the child, per KTAL News.

Wacasey already had full custody of their son when Parker was arrested in 2020 (they divorced in 2017), according to KSLA.

Parker is awaiting execution on Texas Department of Correction’s O’Daniel Unit in Gatesville, Texas. No execution date has been set.

Why Didn’t Taylor Parker Appear in Maternal Instinct

Director Jessica Dimmock refrained from speaking with Parker for the documentary.

“Obviously, Reagan and her family are the most severe and the biggest victims in this, but [there are] other people that she deceived, other people that she hurt along the way, coworkers, former friends,” she told Oxygen in an exclusive interview. “It just felt like it really needed to be told from their perspective.”

Notorious Torturer Sentenced: Shocking Aftermath of Beloved California Artist’s Tragic Murder

0

A vicious killer now faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life in prison after a jury found him guilty of the horrific murder of his artist girlfriend in California. He dragged her back into their home as she desperately tried to flee after their outing.

Following a fortnight-long trial, 30-year-old Victor “Frito” Frieson III was convicted of both murder and torture. The Alameda County jury delivered the verdict on Monday concerning the death of ceramic artist and poet Zoe Reidy Watts, as reported by the Mercury News.

According to the prosecution, the deadly incident occurred after the couple returned to Frieson’s residence in Oakland. They had been on a date at Johnny Foley’s Irish House in San Francisco on March 1, 2024.

During the evening, the couple shared videos on an Instagram account that they occasionally used for restaurant reviews and other content, capturing moments from their night out.

Investigators later utilized these videos to piece together the sequence of events, noting that Reidy Watts appeared unscathed and without any visible injuries when the couple exited the restaurant.

They rode Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) back to Frieson’s apartment at 185 15th St. in Oakland, arriving around 10:45 p.m.

Surveillance footage showed Reidy Watts “was walking but was clearly struggling to maintain her balance, at one point falling sideways into the street,” according to court filings.

Prosecutors said Frieson attacked her around midnight on March 1 or shortly before midnight the following night, leaving her covered in bruises, multiple cuts and a gash to her neck.

During the assault, Reidy Watts tried to escape the apartment, but surveillance video captured her final moments as she staggered outside naked and badly injured before collapsing just beyond the doorway, according to court records.

The footage then showed Frieson dragging her back inside by the arm and shutting the door.

At his trial, Frieson testified in his own defense. His lawyers admitted he committed domestic violence against Reidy Watts but argued he was not guilty of murder or torture.

After the attack, prosecutors said Frieson went to a neighbor’s apartment, said he needed help and led the neighbor to Reidy Watts’ body while implying he did not know how she had died. Prosecutors also argued he cleaned the apartment before seeking help, calling it another sign of guilt.

Jurors also heard that Frieson had assaulted previous romantic partners and that Reidy Watts had tried to get protection from him just months before her death.

The couple met in 2023 while Reidy Watts was a student at San Francisco State University and living in her grandparents’ apartment on Turk Street in San Francisco.

At the time, she was building a name for herself as a visual and performing artist, working as a ceramicist, clothing designer and arts instructor.

Deputy District Attorney Nick Homer wrote in court filings that friends and family started noticing injuries on Reidy Watts soon after she began dating Frieson.

Just six weeks before the killing, she filed a domestic violence report with Oakland police. Homer wrote officers documented “two black eyes, and her legs were covered in deep bruises.”

Frieson’s sentencing is tentatively set for mid-September.

Tragic Drowning at Kansas’ Notorious Scenic Spot Claims College Student

0

A tragic incident has occurred involving a 21-year-old student from Wichita State University who lost his life after leaping into a well-known swimming area in Oregon, where the frigid waters are reportedly intense enough to cause immediate shock.

Kenny Truong, hailing from Wichita, Kansas, was with friends at Tamolitch Falls, locally recognized as Blue Pool, on Friday evening. As he plunged into the water, he found himself unable to return to the surface, confirmed the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency dispatch received a 911 call at 8:47 p.m. on June 26, alerting them to a man who had entered the body of water near Highway 126 and was in distress.

“Eyewitnesses observed him battling to swim toward the shore before he disappeared from view,” Linn County Undersheriff Micah Smith stated in an official release. “The dedicated efforts of both bystanders at Tamolitch Falls and the emergency responders who promptly arrived after the 911 call, unfortunately, could not save Kenny’s life.”

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Lane County Sheriff’s Office and Upper McKenzie Rural Fire responded to the remote area Friday evening.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Kenny Truong, 21, of Kansas, during what is an unimaginable time,” Smith said.

Truong was a finance major at the W. Frank Barton School of Business and a member-at-large of the Cummings Student Managed Investment Fund, Wichita State University confirmed to News Media.

Blue Pool, known for its striking turquoise water and cliffside views, is a major draw for hikers and visitors across the Pacific Northwest, but officials warned it can be deadly.

“It is also a place that has taken lives before and will take lives again if visitors do not understand what they are facing,” Smith said.

Authorities said the cliffs surrounding the pool rise between 10 and 60 feet, while the water averages just 37 degrees. The area also has minimal to no cellphone service, and rescue efforts can be complicated by the remote terrain.

“When something goes wrong at Blue Pool — or on the trail leading into the falls — it can take up to several hours from the moment of injury to reach a hospital,” the sheriff’s office said.

A GoFundMe organized by Carter Nguyen remembered Truong as a deeply loved friend with “fire in him” who pushed others to become “the brightest, best, fullest” versions of themselves.

“Kenny wasn’t just my best friend; he was my brother,” Nguyen wrote. “He had a way of making everyone around him feel seen, feel loved, and feel like they were capable of more than they ever believed on their own.”

“Every room he walked into got a little brighter just because he was in it,” Nguyen wrote. “That’s not something you can fake; that was just Kenny.”

The sheriff’s office urged visitors to understand the risks before entering the water at Tamolitch Falls, watch out for the people they arrive with and call 911 immediately if someone is in distress. Officials said visitors with questions about current conditions should contact the McKenzie River Ranger Station.
