Jury Stalemate in Jonathan Rinderknecht’s Los Angeles Palisades Fire Trial Prompts Legal Strategizing

0

LOS ANGELES — After two days of deliberations, a jury remains deadlocked in the trial of the man accused of igniting the catastrophic 2025 Palisades Fire in Los Angeles, leaving attorneys to consider their next moves.

On Thursday, jurors in the case of 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht were unable to reach a unanimous decision on three federal charges against him. This announcement came shortly after they initially reported reaching a consensus. The jury has been instructed to reconvene Friday morning.

Typically, judges refrain from declaring a mistrial until exploring every possibility to confirm that the jury is indeed at an impasse.

“We have people on both sides that are dead set, unwavering and unwilling to change their opinion,” a message from the jury, read by Judge Anne Hwang, revealed. “We are at a standstill. We are unsure how to proceed.”

Rinderknecht, who has pleaded not guilty, is accused of starting the blaze that ranks among California’s most devastating wildfires. He faces charges of arson, malicious destruction by means of fire, and setting timber on fire.

Prosecutors say Rinderknecht started a fire on Jan. 1, 2025, that burned undetected deep in root systems before flaring back up a week later. The Palisades Fire began Jan. 7 and burned through the hillside neighborhoods of Pacific Palisades and Malibu, killing 12 people.

His trial began June 8 and has featured lengthy testimony from investigators, experts and witnesses from surrounding areas. While the government lacked direct evidence that Rinderknecht sparked the first fire, they placed him in the area and showed he was angry and erratic on the night of the blaze. A potential motive, they said, was his frustration at the rich and powerful. His defense argued the blaze’s cause was more likely to be fireworks.

Hwang sent a note asking if there was anything the court could do to help with deliberations, such as additional instructions or re-reading of testimony. The jury said no. She then asked if the jury was split on all three of Rinderknecht’s charges, and the jury confirmed it was.

Prosecutors suggested that the judge offer additional argument to help the jurors continue to deliberate, but Rinderknecht’s attorneys opposed. They also suggested an Allen charge, which is essentially a more strongly worded jury instruction that urges a hung jury to continue trying to come to an agreement.

Both sides asked for the jury to return Friday so they had more time to plan their options.

Rinderknecht’s father, who has been in court for the duration of the trial, put his head in his hands when the jury said it was at a standstill. His brother and sister were in court as well.

Rinderknecht was feeling “a lot of anxiety” as he listened to proceedings in court, his attorney Steve Haney said.

“You can imagine his life’s on the line. … It’s been a long run for him,” Haney said. “He’s been locked up for 10 months.”

South Korea Fans Urge Manager’s Removal After Star Player Son Heung-min Benched in Crucial World Cup Match

0

South Korea’s head coach, Hong Myung-bo, is under immense pressure to resign after their disastrous performance in the World Cup. The team suffered a 1-0 defeat to South Africa, who were considered the least threatening team in Group A.

The disappointment among South Korean fans stems not only from the team’s precarious position in the tournament but also from their dismal display. Despite dominating possession, they failed to create significant scoring opportunities, leaving spectators frustrated by the lackluster performance.

Their few attempts on goal included a meek header from Oh Hyeon-gyu and an early attempt by Lee Kang-in. This underwhelming showing has sparked a petition for Hong’s removal, labeling it as ‘lifeless’ and marking it as one of the most disappointing performances in South Korea’s World Cup history. Fans are now anxiously hoping for favorable outcomes to secure one of the eight third-place spots needed to advance to the knockout stages.

The decision to bench South Korea’s star player, despite their earlier narrow win over the Czech Republic and lack of shots in their loss to Mexico, was a risky move. The gamble has backfired dramatically, reflecting poorly on Hong’s strategy.

South Korea had only to avoid losing to the Group A underdogs to secure the second spot in the standings. This missed opportunity has led to a wave of demands from fans and media alike for Hong to step down from his role as coach.

The most controversial moment actually arrived before the game, with captain Son Heung-min dropped from the starting line-up for the first ever time in the former Spurs midfielder's career

A petition from fans in the wake of the defeat argued that Hong’s appointment had been tainted by procedural flaws from the outset and that it was ‘fundamentally illegitimate’

Such has been the backlash that, in the post-match press conference, journalists described the South Korean performance as ‘dismal’; another suggested that the only explanation for such a poor display was a case of ‘mass food poisoning within the squad’, and Hong’s decision-making was labelled a ‘failure’.

A petition from fans in the wake of the defeat argued that Hong’s appointment had been tainted by procedural flaws from the outset.

It read: ‘The Korea Football Association’s official selection process was effectively ignored, making it difficult to avoid criticism that the appointment was fundamentally illegitimate.’

It continued: ‘Despite fielding what many considered the strongest squad in Korea’s World Cup history, the team finished with one win and two losses, placing third in the group.

‘The performance against South Africa was so lifeless that it could be regarded as one of the worst displays by a Korean team in World Cup history.’

Aside from Hong’s removal, the petition also urged sweeping reforms to the governance of the Korea Football Association (KFA).

Hong himself, who many believe would not have stayed beyond the end of this campaign, accepted ‘full responsibility’ in the wake of the defeat – and will therefore likely go quietly if asked to do so.

‘In terms of the process and preparing for this game, and how we would play on the field, that is something I put much thought into,’ said the former South Korea captain, who led the team to its famous semifinal finish in 2002 during his playing days. ‘Of course, if we knew what the result was going to be, I probably would have made different choices.

‘But I had a strategy in mind. Whenever such a bad result happens, everyone has their own opinion. The result is really the responsibility of the head coach. Ultimately, it comes down to my hands.

‘I guess I made the wrong decisions and that was the reason we had a bad result. Nothing more, nothing less.’

As for his decision-making behind the exclusion of Son, Hong argued that he believed in the build-up to the match that the 33-year-old would be most ruthless when deployed against a tiring South African side – although he actually brought him on at the start of the second half, right after both teams had benefited from a break, and he had little impact on the game.

‘We thought that Son would be better placed (to make an impact) when the opponents were losing their energy, not when they had a lot of energy,’ Hong added. ‘And when there were more spaces to exploit between the opponents’ defensive line, that’s when we wanted Son to be at his strongest – when the opponents were a bit weaker.’

South Korea could still squeeze into the Round of 32 given they currently sit sixth in the standings. As it stands, they will face Mo Salah’s Egypt side next.

Even so, the country’s football media are predicting that regardless of the outcome of the third-place standings, Hong’s fate could already be sealed.

Refurbished Buckingham Palace Awaits New Era as King and Queen Choose Alternate Residence

Buckingham Palace may never again serve as the primary residence for a British monarch, as it has been confirmed that King Charles and Queen Camilla do not plan to return to the historic estate.

King and Queen won't live at Buckingham Palace after 369m refurb

Royal couple opts to reside outside Buckingham Palace post £369m renovation

Currently undergoing extensive renovations estimated at £369 million, Buckingham Palace will not host the King and Queen even after the project concludes in March. Instead, the royal couple prefers to remain at Clarence House, located nearby.

James Chalmers, Keeper of the Privy Purse, said: “I can update you that after careful consideration, and to greatly increase opportunities for public access, the King and Queen have decided not to adopt Buckingham Palace as a personal residence and will instead continue to use Clarence House as their London home.”

However, the king and queen will still use private rooms within the Palace – which has been a London residence of the British monarch since 1837 – during the working day.

James added: “Their Majesties will, however, have access to private rooms within the Palace where they can retire during the course of a working day, and which could be utilised as potential residential accommodation in times ahead.

“This is both a change from the past and a recognition of the future.

“Let me be clear, however, in all other ways the Palace will continue to be both the ceremonial and operational centre of royal life.”

It’s thought Prince William also won’t live in Buckingham Palace when he becomes king, because he is said to be happy at Forest Lodge in Windsor with his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, and their three children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight.

However, Buckingham Palace will still be widely used by the Royal Family, such as Charles hosting events, including garden parties, at the residence.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “The Palace will continue in every traditional way to be the beating heart of the Monarchy, just not its resting head.

“It will be a buzzing hive of activity in every other way.

“His Majesty retains huge affection for Buckingham Palace and a deep respect for its role in royal and public life.

“It will remain a working home but we are seeking to widen public access precisely to maximise the national benefit of a publicly-funded building.”

Mets Dismiss Carlos Mendoza Amid Transformational Efforts in Wake of Disastrous Season

0

Carlos Mendoza has become the scapegoat for the Mets’ disappointing season.

The Mets parted ways with their manager on Friday, according to a report by Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of The Post. This decision comes as the team languishes 14 games below the .500 mark, after enduring their sixth consecutive defeat on Thursday, signaling what seems to be their second consecutive year missing the playoffs.

Andy Green has been appointed as the interim manager.

While the blame for the Mets’ turmoil is widespread, including criticism directed at President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, it was Mendoza who first made an exit. This comes as the team, featuring a roster valued at over $320 million, holds the worst record in the NL East at 34-37.

Mendoza’s initial success in 2024 was overshadowed by last year’s collapse in the latter half of the season, and a dismal 10-21 start this year, which began with a 12-game losing streak, ultimately landed him on shaky ground.

Stearns backed his manager on May 1 while some wondered about Mendoza’s future.

“We know our record is not what we want, and we know we are capable of more,” Stearns told MLB.com. “We don’t view this as a manager problem, and we don’t intend to make a change.”

The Mets responded by winning 11 of their next 16 games, and a four-game win streak to end May had the team sitting at 26-33 entering May.

A five-game losing streak from June 18-24 in which the Mets allowed 50 runs dropped them a season-high 12 games below .500 and led to David Peterson being traded, and Mendoza departed soon after.

The Mets will now hope that their new manager can have same the galvanizing effect that Don Mattingly has had in Philadelphia this year, with their rivals taking off after he replaced Rob Thomson.

For Mendoza, this firing ends an up-and-down two-and-a-half-year run.

Mendoza’s tenure began with him looking like he could be the team’s skipper for the next decade or so before the failures of the last year and a half caught up to him.

He unexpectedly led the team to the NLCS in his rookie season in 2024, upsetting the Phillies along the way in one of the team’s best moments since the 2015 World Series run.

The 2025 season, with newcomer Juan Soto, began in epic fashion with a 45-24 record through June 12 before the Mets collapsed and somehow did not finish with a top-six NL record.

They finished 38-55 to finish 83-79, losing two of three in the season-ending series against the woeful Marlins to allow the Reds to claim the final wild-card spot.

Mendoza received a retooled roster this offseason featuring Bo Bichette, Marcus Semien and Freddy Peralta with Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo exiting, and the team had high hopes.

Bichette has not hit as expected, Peralta has pitched like a back-end starter instead of an ace and Francisco Lindor has spent most of the year on the injured list, among other team issues.

The Mets are now all but set to be sellers this summer.

Green is now the fourth manager under owner Steve Cohen, joining Luis Rojas, Buck Showalter and Mendoza, with no skipper yet to last three seasons under the big-spending owner.

Congressional Hopeful Loses Job Amid Controversy: What You Need to Know

0

In Wyoming’s political landscape, a congressional candidate is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Reid Rasner, running as a Republican in the primary race for the state’s lone congressional seat, faces scrutiny following a disclosure of his dismissal from a finance position amid controversial circumstances.

This latest twist in Rasner’s ambitions was revealed through a federal filing indicating he was discharged from his role at LPL Financial LLC. This advisory and brokerage giant, a $22 billion firm, stated in its notice that Rasner was let go due to alleged participation in ‘unapproved outside business activity.’

The development surfaced on April 24, as documented in a disclosure published on the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure website. While the notice piques significant interest, specific details surrounding the allegations are yet to be disclosed.

Rasner had been affiliated with LPL Financial since March 2019, marking a substantial period until his tenure ended abruptly this spring. As one among ten contenders aiming for the Republican nomination, Rasner’s political journey now faces additional challenges with this professional setback.

Rasner was registered with the firm in March 2019 up until this spring of this year, according to the SEC website.

But on May 11 of this year, Rasner’s registration changed to Omnivest Financial, an investment adviser firm in New York and Wyoming that he owns.

On Thursday afternoon, Rasner’s campaign sent Daily Mail a statement from Omnivest regarding the political hopeful’s apparent dismissal from LPL.

The statement sent by the campaign claimed that Rasner ‘was never an employee of LPL Financial’ and that ‘he was an independent contractor who owned 100% of his prior business.’

‘The transition Omnivest Financial made was a negotiated business transaction in which LPL purchased client relationships as Mr. Rasner launched his own registered investment advisor firm,’ the statement continued.

It called any suggestion that Rasner was terminated for misconduct ‘inaccurate, misleading, and unacceptable.’

Rasner’s campaign directed further questions to Omnivest, which he owns.

When the Daily Mail reached out to Omnivest, the firm promptly returned the same statement sent by Rasner’s campaign.

They did not immediately reply to a follow up question about why the disclosure notice was up on the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure website.

Rasner was listed on the website as an investment adviser, who is defined as someone that is paid for providing advice about securities to clients.

He was also named as a previous broker who bought and sold stocks, bonds, mutual funds and other sorts of investments.

The SEC specified that disclosures could be customer complaints or arbitrations, regulatory actions, employment terminations, bankruptcy filings and civil or criminal proceedings.

A disclosure brochure from June 15 said that Rasner was ‘100% owner’ of Omnivest, which was founded in 2019 and began providing advisory services this year.

The brochure noted that Rasner ‘has a non–financial affiliated business as a congressional candidate.’

‘Approximately 10% of his time is spent on these activities,’ the filing said.

A public profile on the Forbes Business Council previously said Rasner was passionate about ’empowering business leaders, fostering strategic partnerships, and advocating for American entrepreneurship.’

Rasner has maintained an active social media presence since the news about the disclosure notice broke.

On Thursday morning, he posted a video asking voters if they were for or against the right to carry a concealed handgun.

Rasner sported a Make America Great Again Hat and appeared to be using a miniature American flag as a microphone.

‘Alright, we’re packing,’ he told a man featured in the video, though the local said he actually did not have a firearm on him.

Rasner also urged locals to vote for him as he called to ‘Ban Sharia Law Now.’

On his website, Rasner touted his campaign as fighting to ‘put Wyoming and America first, standing strong against globalist policies that undermine our workers, families, and industries.’

He has described himself as a ‘conservative political outsider’ whose roots in Wyoming stretch back four generations.

His campaign has received attention, particularly online. In late March, Rasner pushed for ‘no more fat kids’ as he spoke at a local football field.

Earlier this month, he posted a video of two donkeys that he captioned, ‘We found the only 2 Democrats in Wyoming.’

‘Behind me we have Barack and Biden,’ Rasner said. ‘A couple of the nicest asses I’ve met.’

Rasner has also pushed to ‘ban all transgender surgeries’ and encouraged mass deportations.

He previously gained attention last year when he claimed to be in conversations to buy TikTok, according to NBC News.

In 2024, Rasner unsuccessfully attempted to defeat incumbent Senator John Barrasso in the GOP’s Wyoming primary.

Unfortunately, my body just changes,” Fishel recalled. “So there was one time I was like, ‘Guys, I don’t know what to do. It’s been a few days since I’ve been to the bathroom.’ I had to take some very strong laxatives,” she explained.

Friedle, 49, then interjected to add, “You had to pull over on the side of the road!”

Continuing her story, Fishel confessed, “I went to the bathroom in the most repulsive Porta Potty in a gas station.”

Earlier in the episode, Fishel also shared what she had discovered about her podcast cohost Friedle.

“So I did not have any idea how many times a day Will changes his underwear, But doing the podcast live tour, we got probably too comfortable with our travel habits. We got to talk regularly about what underwear Will was currently wearing,” she said. “He would then show us and then he’d say, ‘I’m going to go and change into these for the live show.’ So then we’d know what underwear he was wearing for the live show.”

Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley Reunite for Exciting New Show Post-‘Vampire Diaries’ Reunion

Almost ten years after the conclusion of The Vampire Diaries, actors Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley are set to reunite for an exciting new project.

The beloved former co-stars are slated to both executive produce and star in Hulu’s upcoming series, You Deserve to Know. This show is an adaptation of Aggie Blum Thompson’s forthcoming thriller novel, set to release in 2025. The official summary teases an intriguing tale: “You Deserve to Know centers around three suburban couples, who are best friends and live next door to each other. The murder of one husband triggers the unraveling of shocking secrets, putting their friendship to the ultimate test.”

Dobrev, who is now 37, took to Instagram on Thursday, June 25, to share her enthusiasm about the project. She expressed, “I’ve been eagerly waiting to announce this. We fell in love with this novel, and having the chance to shape its adaptation both in front and behind the camera has been an incredible journey.”

Prior to joining forces on You Deserve to Know, Wesley, 43, and Dobrev captivated audiences with their performances in The Vampire Diaries on The CW. The series spanned from 2009 to 2017 and revolved around a dramatic love triangle involving Elena (Dobrev) and the brothers Stefan (Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder).

The Vampire Diaries was more than just on-screen romance; the cast’s chemistry often extended beyond the set, with many finding real-life connections within the show’s universe. Since the series’ premiere in 2009, audiences became deeply invested in the supernatural drama unfolding in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia.

Dobrev and Wesley previously surprised fans by discussing their initial tension on set.

“Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, I didn’t like Paul Wesley,” Dobrev recalled on a 2019 episode of the “Directionally Challenged” podcast, which was hosted by former costars Candice King and Kayla Ewell. “I remember everyone would walk up to me after the show aired and they’d be like, ‘Are you and Paul dating in real life?’ Everyone thought that we had such good chemistry. I realize now that there’s a fine line between love and hate, and we despised each other so much that it read as love, but … we really just didn’t get along [for] the first five months of shooting.”

Dobrev, who dated Somerhalder, now 47, from 2010 to 2013, eventually developed a close bond with Wesley.

“We ended up getting to a good place and it was fine,” she concluded. “Of everyone, I think I probably see him the most and hang out with him the most. We’re probably the closest. We hang out a lot. We’re really good friends. … It’s so funny how time changes everything because I never thought he would be one of my best friends.”

Wesley, for his part, shared a similar sentiment when he recalled the interesting approach he took for his chemistry read with Dobrev — ignoring her before the audition.

“I had a real specific approach. Nina, who was already cast as the lead, was there and everybody in that audition room during that process was kissing her ass because she was in the hallways. Everyone was going up to her and saying hi. And I was like, ‘F*** that. I’m not going to look her in the eye and I’m also not going to introduce myself. I’m just gonna sit in the corner,’” Wesley recalled during a 2023 episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast.

The Vampire Diaries Cast Where Are They Now

The Vampire Diaries’ 2009 premiere introduced fans to one of the most memorable vampire-themed series to date. The CW show, which ran for eight seasons until 2017, took place in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, home to mythical creatures and humans alike. In addition to tales of people becoming vampires, or finding out […]

The actor used Stefan and Elena’s backstory in the pilot as inspiration.

“[I didn’t do that] because I was trying to be rude. But because in the scene, we were supposed to not know who one another is,” he noted. “It’s supposed to be a mystery. We were supposed to meet for the first time. We were supposed to meet at that exact moment. And I thought, ‘Well, f*** that. I want our moment to be really special. I want her to get to know me in that moment.’”

Wesley said Dobrev didn’t have the best first impression of him because of his method acting.

“Nina remembers this and I just remember her looking over at me wanting to say hi to me and introduce herself. I just turned away. I think she thought initially, like, ‘Who the f*** does this guy think he is?’” he continued. “But anyway, I went in there and I just remember the audition and the first time we ever met in real life was actually in that audition room. It was just a very magical moment. And I felt it. She felt [it] and I know all those studio executives felt it. And I think that’s what landed me the part.”

Ex-Titans Scout Blaise Taylor Accused of Poisoning Pregnant Girlfriend with Cocaine

0

In a shocking case involving a former scout for the Titans, serious allegations have emerged. He stands accused of lethally poisoning his pregnant girlfriend with cocaine.

As revealed by court documents examined by Oxygen, Blaise Taylor faces charges including two counts each of first-degree and felony murder in connection to the deaths of Jade Benning and her unborn child in 2023. His indictment was filed in 2024, and his trial has just commenced this week.

According to CourtTV, Taylor has entered a plea of not guilty. Meanwhile, his legal representatives have yet to issue a statement in response to queries from Oxygen.

Benning became pregnant in November 2022 after a few months of dating Taylor. During the trial’s opening statements on June 23, prosecutors claimed Taylor was reportedly troubled by news of the pregnancy, as detailed by WSMV.

The couple experienced a brief split before getting back together. Upon realizing his potential paternity, Taylor displayed increased involvement in the pregnancy, according to his lawyer, as reported by NewsNation.

On Feb. 25, 2023, while Benning was five months pregnant, the couple was eating dinner at home when she became suspicious that her drink had been contaminated, according to WSMV. Benning called her best friend Nijaiha Jackson to share her belief and started slurring her words.

“She was saying, ‘My drink tasted funny, I can’t even walk straight, you did this so something could happen to the baby,’” Jackson, who had visited with the couple earlier that evening, said in court, according to WTVF.

The defense denied that Benning ever accused Taylor of tampering with her drink, WSMV reported, and stated that Jackson never called 911 after getting off the phone with Benning.

“There was only one person that night that called 911,” defense attorney Quinones-Hollins said in court, according to NewsNation. “With all of this medical emergency, all of these things that were going on with this young lady, there was only one person who called the police, who called for help, and that was Blaise.”

In a recording of the 911 call played in court, Taylor said Benning might have had an allergic reaction, according to WSMV.

“We had cookies and pasta,” he told dispatch. “I don’t know what she’s done…I don’t know what to do.”

Taylor appeared to follow instructions to keep Benning positioned on her side and answered questions about her medical condition.

Emergency responders allegedly found Benning lying face-down on her bed, with pink foam around her mouth, WSMV reported.

She was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where a doctor later testified that she was clinically dead and had been placed on oxygen, according to WSMV.

Benning’s unborn baby died on Feb. 27. She then died of acute cocaine toxicity on March 6, which was also her 25th birthday, prosecutors said.

During an April 2024 hearing, a medical examiner testified Bennet had an unusually high amount of cocaine in her system, WSMV reported. Prosecutors further alleged the cocaine had been dissolved into a liquid before it was ingested, according to WKRN.

Taylor moved to Utah after the deaths, prosecutors said, where he was arrested on March 14, 2024, and returned to Tennessee.

He could face life in prison if convicted on all charges, according to KARK.

Karl Stefanovic Departs Nine Network Following Contentious Podcast Interview

Karl Stefanovic is set to depart from Nine after nearly twenty years on the Today show, prompted by a podcast interview he conducted with controversial British figure Tommy Robinson.

Nine’s chief executive, Matt Stanton, announced to employees via email on Friday that this was an opportune moment for Stefanovic to transition, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, which is a Nine-owned publication.

“Karl has been a regular presence on our screens for more than twenty years, so this marks a significant shift for our audience and our team at Nine. However, it is the appropriate time for this decision,” Stanton expressed in the email.

According to a statement given to SBS News, Nine indicated that Stefanovic was already scheduled to exit the network at year-end.

A spokesperson informed SBS News that “Nine Entertainment and Karl Stefanovic have mutually decided that continuing his role as Today host alongside his independent podcast is no longer feasible.”

“While Karl and Nine had previously agreed he would leave Today at the end of this year, they have subsequently decided he will leave the Network immediately.”

Executives finalised the terms of his exit on Friday morning, ending his run as Australia’s highest-paid television presenter.

It remains unclear whether Nine will pay out the estimated $1 million balance of his contract.

‘I’m free’

On Friday morning, Stefanovic released a statement via a YouTube video, saying he was “free”.

“I’m free. Truly independent. I didn’t get the chance to thank my free-to-air audience for 21 years, so thank you for riding the ups and downs,” he said.

“It wasn’t easy, this last couple of days, but we rolled on. So here’s what I believe in: the public deserve to hear perspectives.”

He said his show was all about “freedom of speech”.

“On my show, I’ve spoken to people who have different perspectives — I know that winds some people up.

“Sometimes I agree with everything a guest says, sometimes I don’t. But importantly, you get to make up your mind.”

“Freedom of speech — here and around the world — is what this show is about. You don’t have to listen to my show — you have the power.”

Albanese: ‘Words do matter’

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who has previously been a guest on Stefanovic’s show, said the situation was “unfortunate” but that “words do matter”.

“It’s a matter, of course, for Channel Nine, but words do matter, and what people who are very prominent in our public discourse do, and how they conduct themselves, matters as well,” Albanese told ABC.

“It’s unfortunate — the way that what has been a very big career has ended in this way — but that’s a matter for Karl Stefanovic, to think about his actions and the decisions that he’s made. And Nine have made a consequential decision.”

Stefanovic interviewed Robinson — a far-right anti-Islam activist who has been linked to violent anti-immigration riots in the UK — on his independent podcast, which launched in January and has featured guests including Pauline Hanson, Clive Palmer, and Albanese.

During the episode, Stefanovic introduced Robinson as “one of Britain’s most controversial figures” and said he “admired” him for his “courage” to “stand up for what you believe is right”.

A day after publication, the interview was taken down from Stefanovic’s YouTube channel, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.

The interview subsequently resurfaced on Hanson’s YouTube channel, with “CANCELLED” added to the title, and later on Robinson’s own channel.

Hanson, who has described Stefanovic as a “good friend”, publicly offered Stefanovic a job, saying she was “looking for someone in my office”.

Nine’s director of news and current affairs Fiona Dear, in a separate email reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, pushed back on assertions the decision was a violation of freedom of speech, saying the network welcomed “open debate and challenging norms with constructive, balanced arguments”.
