Venezuela Earthquake Tragedy: Death Toll Climbs to 235, Thousands Missing

0

This week, Venezuela has been devastated by a series of powerful earthquakes that have claimed at least 235 lives. As the search for survivors continues, more than 4,300 individuals have been reported injured, and thousands remain unaccounted for. In a move to aid this crisis-stricken nation, U.S. military leadership is on the ground in Caracas, facilitating relief operations.

As rescue efforts press on, officials anticipate the death toll will continue to rise. The earthquakes, which struck on Wednesday night, registered magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 and wreaked havoc about 120 miles west of the capital city, Caracas.

Venezuelan state television has been broadcasting heart-wrenching footage of the disaster. Among the scenes, rescuers were shown pulling a woman from beneath a cement slab, her only visible trace being a bare foot. The Associated Press highlighted the poignant images of dust- and blood-covered survivors, including children and animals, being drawn from the debris.

Arriving overnight, U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Kevin J. Jarrard is now in Caracas, as confirmed by the U.S. Southern Command, to command the Department of War’s assistance in Venezuela’s earthquake recovery missions.

SOUTHCOM’s announcement comes as the Trump administration has activated a government-wide humanitarian response, pledging $150 million in aid and deploying U.S. Navy warships to assist in life-saving rescue operations.

“Maj. Gen. Jarrard is serving as the senior U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) official on the ground and is working closely with partners to plan, coordinate, and direct the U.S. military’s unparalleled logistical and operational capabilities to support the rapid, life-saving movement of response personnel, equipment, and humanitarian assistance into affected areas,” SOUTHCOM said in a statement, noting that Venezuela’s interim government — led by acting President Delcy Rodríguez — formally requested American assistance.

“Assigned U.S. military forces will utilize fixed and rotor wing aircraft to provide specialized mobility services and assist U.S. Government personnel, search and rescue teams, and partners assessing damage and delivering critical life-saving assistance,” SOUTHCOM added.

The coastal region of La Guaira, which is located north of Caracas, suffered some of the heaviest damage and casualties. The country’s main airport is there and was closed due to damage, complicating aid efforts.

Retired schoolteacher Juan Alberto Mendaño climbed through wreckage in La Guaira and past a body when he spotted a woman who was trapped and signaling with her hand for help, according to the AP.

“May God rescue her as quickly as possible,” Mendaño reportedly said. “When we heard the scream, there was nothing we could do.”

Venezuelan authorities said they were diverting rescue teams from other parts of the country to La Guaira.

Rodríguez also appealed to businesses Thursday to make heavy construction equipment available for rescue operations.

Katie Price Exits Celebrity Masterchef Following Cooking Mishap

Katie Price made her exit from Celebrity Masterchef on Friday night following a culinary mishap.

The 43-year-old TV star encountered a challenging week during the competition, ultimately being eliminated after her steak and chips were served undercooked, while her attempt at brioche bread and butter pudding turned out soggy.

This pre-filmed episode was broadcast just days after Katie was attacked in her home at 1:30 in the morning, an incident that left her feeling ‘frightened, vulnerable, and struggling with insomnia.’

Katie faced fierce rivalry as fellow competitors Dion Dublin and Joe Swash impressed both judges and celebrity diners with their offerings. The footballer prepared a deep-fried halloumi appetizer followed by a pork main, whereas the actor crafted Toad in the Hole and a Tottenham cake dessert.

Katie was flustered under the pressure when her chips weren’t crisping up in the oven, and apologised when she presented her main dish to the guest judges Vicky Pattison, Sophie Thompson and John Partridge.

The former model said after her elimination: ‘There are no excuses, you win some you lose some, I am so proud of everything, it is what it is but I’ve had a fantastic time.’

Analyzing ‘Supergirl’: Deciphering the Film’s Hints at Kara Zor-El’s Potential DC Universe Comeback

0

Birthdays aren’t always cheerful, especially when your past is filled with trauma, and your family and home are long gone. Such is the grim reality for Kara Zor-El, portrayed by Milly Alcock in “Supergirl.” Her introduction is nothing short of a booze-fueled spiral, as she hops from one dive bar to another across red-sunned planets, desperately grasping for any emotion as her 23rd birthday looms. Ignoring calls from her cousin Clark, played by David Corenswet, she finds herself in a haze, barely awake in the most awkward places, while her faithful companion, Krypto, adds an uncouth touch to her spaceship surroundings. Yet, destiny intervenes when Kara encounters a girl armed with a sword and fiery vengeance, setting Kara on an unexpected path across the galaxy spurred by lingering heroic instincts.

By the conclusion of “Supergirl,” a transformed Kara emerges victorious, no longer just an intoxicated 23-year-old but rather the beacon of hope her cousin always believed she could become. In the film’s triumphant final moments, she overcomes her greatest adversary—despair—proving no villain can dim her newfound light.

Though “Supergirl” might not break new ground in the superhero space opera realm, with its rather generic sci-fi henchmen and planets indistinguishable beneath layers of brown rockiness and dingy colonial motifs, the film finds its strength through its cast. Milly Alcock brings a radiant energy to Kara’s role, guiding her through a narrative that, while familiar, is executed with enough finesse to grip viewers until the thrilling finale. Her journey from despair to hope is the real epic battle fought in this cosmic setting.

Here’s what you might have overlooked on Kara’s journey and the ending that redefines her legacy in “Supergirl.”

A galactic adventure

The movie kicks off with Kara’s grungy adventure through a series of interstellar bars, aiming to drown her sorrows in cheap drinks alongside some dubious space cereal. Her constant companion in these escapades is Krypto, whose loyalty and love prove grounding for Kara. Her world takes a lethal twist when a skirmish with the notorious brigands known as the Brigands results in Krypto being shot with a poison dart. This tragic turn of events propels Kara on a relentless quest to retrieve the antidote, with the grim countdown of three days before Krypto succumbs to the poison.

Kara meets another dependent in the form of Ruthye (Eve Ridley), a girl seeking revenge against the Brigands and their leader, Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), which Kara discourages. Ruthye’s father (Ferdinand Kingsley), a noted swordsmith, is killed, along with her mother (Emily Piggford) and brother (Emond Knoll).

What follows is a standard chain of action set pieces, betrayals, and reveals. The pair survive an attack on their space bus, and they encounter the infamous spacefaring mercenary Lobo (Jason Momoa) on planet Bilquis, who’s also seeking the Brigands. The pirates attack in search of more “brides” to keep their all-male bloodline going, and Kara and Lobo fight them off. When the Brigands escape, Kara threatens local information into taking her to their base of operations, which turns out to be a planet oscillating between green and yellow suns, the former of which nearly kills her. When all hope seems lost, Ruthye emerges, having gone against Kara’s wishes, and drags her to safety.

What happens at the end of Supergirl?

The final act of “Supergirl” takes place almost entirely on the planet Barenton, where Krem has left his flagship between raids. The planet exists under both a yellow sun and green sun, with the green having an effect on Kara similar to Kryptonite (which is explained more thoroughly in the “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic series the film is based on).

After Ruthye drags Kara to a cave for safety, she goes out in search of water but is captured by the Brigands. In their ship, Ruthye encounters Lobo again, who has also been captured. The two escape, but Ruthye is caught again on the ship’s deck by Krem. Thankfully, the green sun sets and the yellow sun rises, and Supergirl emerges in full costume (delivered to the planet by Ruthye) to wreck shop.

In short order, and with a little help from Lobo, Kara dispatches the Brigands and saves the women they abducted. When Ruthye has a chance to kill Krem and avenge her slain family, Kara persuades her to let it go. After Ruthye walks away, Kara kills Krem herself. They then return to Krypto with the antidote and save him. After a tearful goodbye with Ruthye, Kara goes back to Superman to say that she’s done bouncing around the galaxy, and is ready to stay in one place for a while and be the hero he knew she was.

Supergirl returns as a protector

Throughout “Supergirl,” but especially at the end, Kara’s transformation into a true hero is all about protecting the helpless. She takes clear joy in beating up cronies earlier in the film for the sake of it, but gets a hard jolt during the battle on Bilquis when Krem kills a whole family in front of her. Ashamed and guilt-ridden, Kara pursues him alone, even though the plan is reckless.

In the final battle on Barenton, much of the action is framed around Ruthye. It’s like we’re seeing Kara in her full glory from the girl’s perspective. While Ruthye brandishes her sword many times during the battle, Kara always jumps in right before she strikes. Not only does she protect her, but she keeps her from committing the kind of violence Kara is familiar with.

This desire to “save” Ruthye extends to the confrontation with Krem. Kara and Ruthye bond over their shared loss of home and family, which Kara tells her can’t be cured by simple revenge that could leave Ruthye worse off in the long run. By killing Krem herself, she steers Ruthye clear from future harm, but she also shields her from the burden of having killed a man in cold blood. Like her cousin, Kara’s moral root is that of a protector. And yes, she saves the captured women, too.

Lobo saves the day (kind of)

Jason Momoa’s public love of Lobo came full circle when he was formally cast in “Supergirl.” The addition also helped realize part of the original plan for the “Woman of Tomorrow” comic. According to writer Tom King, the initial vision for the series was inspired by “True Grit,” with Supergirl and Lobo acting as differing role models to the young Ruthye. Lobo was cut from the comic, though most other core details are adapted faithfully in the film (artist Bilquis Evely even gets two planets named after her).

While Momoa kills it in the role and the character’s inclusion makes good on the original comic pitch, Lobo feels a bit out of place in the movie. He is given little development and an extremely convenient connection to Kara’s request that avoids any real dynamic between the two. Lobo’s powers and abilities are on full display, though, and he uses them to great effect to help Kara in the climax.

After Kara lays waste to the Brigands, there’s a distant shot of Lobo watching from afar, cigar chomped between his teeth, nodding in approval. It’s a shame they don’t spend more time together, but Momoa has made it clear that he wants to return to the role in a bigger way. As of yet, there are no such confirmed plans, but the character’s introduction to the DCU is as a helpful antihero leaves many possibilites.

Be good, not nice

In flashbacks to the fall of Krypton, Kara’s mother urges her to be good, but clarifies that it doesn’t always mean to be nice. Later, when Kara is suffering beneath the glow of the green sun, Ruthye says something similar — that Kara is not always nice, but she is kind.

That distinction is one of the core thematic principles of the film. Kara’s crudeness and willingness to embrace temporary darkness for the greater good are a stark contrast to Superman, and even when she rises in full garb at the end — arguably the best Supergirl has ever looked in live-action, by the way — she maintains her edge. What could have been a generic story about the dangers of revenge becomes a more nuanced tale of how tragedy changes you, all because Kara, unlike her cousin, is willing (and even a bit invigorated) to kill Krem.

At one point, about midway through the story, Kara describes Clark as being “younger” than her, even though he is about a decade older. When Ruthye asks what she means, Kara says that his heart is lighter, because he never experienced the kinds of things that Kara, and now Ruthye, have gone through.

Supergirl is a story about healing from grief

There is no confusion as to what “Supergirl” is about. The film hits its main theme repeatedly, but most powerfully in the quiet moments between Kara and Ruthye. Their conversation on Bilquis, when Kara explains the fall of Krypton, is a much-needed respite in the midst of a breakneck plot, and it’s where Kara delivers the film’s big treatise on grief.

After telling her story, Kara urges Ruthye to reconsider her revenge plot, saying that loss and grief can push you to all kinds of dark places and revenge won’t make it better. It’s a nice sentiment, but Ruthye cuts through it almost instantly, asking Kara when she finally stopped being angry about what happened to her. In a prestige moment of her performance, Milly Alcock scoffs quietly, and then, as much to herself as to the girl, responds, “Any day now.”

Even when she returns to Earth, it’s clear her journey isn’t over. She has made the first major step of choosing to become something greater than her grief, but the work is ongoing, and the film thankfully doesn’t judge her for her continued bouts of fury. By taking on the burden of killing Krem, Kara allows Ruthye to return to her life in peace. We are told that she will live with her aunt, and plans to take up her father’s craft of making swords. Hopefully, she will rarely have to use them.

Supergirls, Supermen, and turning 23

While the grief theme is thoroughly explored in “Supergirl,” the film unfortunately doesn’t spend as much time on its other interesting ideas. There’s a brief nod to the inherent sexism in Superman being a “man” and Supergirl being a “girl” — an idea intrinsically questioned by the title of the source material, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” When it’s revealed that the Brigands are kidnapping girls to be their “brides,” it seems like the film might engage deeper with its inherently gendered themes.

What we get instead is standard superhero action, with almost no time paid to how the specific crimes of the Brigands might resonate with Kara or Ruthye. While a female superhero movie is not required to engage in gender politics, it feels odd that “Supergirl” puts so much emphasis on explicitly gendered violence, only to dodge it.

There’s some more interesting material in how age and maturity aren’t directly linked. Though she is young, Kara carries the weight of a dead race with her. She carries her father’s pocket watch, adding to the running theme of time, but again, the film doesn’t pull these threads together. You can read the character as a person out of time, with a three-day deadline to save Krypto yanking her back in a visceral way. But the film spends so much time on CGI battles and plot-centric dialogue that these ideas don’t get space to breathe.

What the cast and crew of Supergirl have said about the ending

In a May 2026 interview with Variety, Milly Alcock discussed how Kara’s arc in “Supergirl” is symbolized by her finally putting on the costume. “She realizes that being Supergirl has nothing to do with her and has to do with everybody else around her,” the actress said. “She needs to put her own feelings aside to help others, and through that she can save herself. So that’s what the suit is for her.” Kara finally returning to Earth in full costume, matching her cousin, closes out the journey nicely.

Director Craig Gillespie shared similar sentiments with The Playlist. “Bizarrely, sort of miraculously, through her journey with Ruthye, whom she’s helping along the way very reluctantly, she realizes it’s almost like holding a mirror up to herself,” he explained. The director elaborated on the similarities with his previous films, like “Cruella” and “I, Tonya,” in their depictions of complicated women. “I’ve gotten into this section of very strong female characters that are flawed and human and overcoming obstacles. It’s a space that I love to be in.”

For Eve Ridley, the production helped their arcs click into place by the third act. “I think it was really lovely to see [Ruthye and Kara’s bond] over time because the film was shot in chronological order,” Ridley told SciFiNow, “so as our characters developed, my and Milly’s relationship also developed … it was definitely very fun to shoot in that way.”

When will Supergirl appear next in the DCU?

Kara’s return to Metropolis at the end of Supergirl shows that she is finally ready to heal. That’s not the same as healing. Her grief still burns, but she’s done running from it and drowning her sorrows in self-destructive behavior. Putting on the costume in the third act, which she initially tells Ruthye doesn’t have any special powers or meaning, itself signals her growth.

Beyond the character arc, there are also implications for the larger DCU story. Having two Kryptonians on Earth is a huge boon for the human race, and with Brainiac as the main villain in James Gunn’s upcoming “Man of Tomorrow,” the planet will likely need them both. The “Superman” sequel is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on July 9, 2027, and Supergirl is confirmed to be a part of it.

Gunn’s DC Universe timeline has a lot more on the docket, but we don’t know yet if Kara will get a proper sequel outside of her appearance in “Man of Tomorrow.” The critical response to “Supergirl” has been pretty mixed, and the likely merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance could have looming implications for the DCU as a whole, should the deal go through. At the very least, we’ll see Alcock put on the cape and boots once more in 2027.

UN Expert Responds to Survivor’s Criticism Over Denial of October 7 Hamas Assaults

0

A United Nations specialist in violence faced startling backlash after a female survivor of the October 7 events challenged her stance on the sexual assault allegations involving Hamas. The survivor recounted her own horrific experiences, including sexual abuse by the militant group.

During the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council held on Tuesday, Ilana Gritzewsky shared a profound and poignant testimony. She spoke about the severe trauma she endured as a hostage under Hamas.

“On October 7, terrorists stormed our Kibbutz, murdering, kidnapping, and burning,” Gritzewsky recounted. “They physically assaulted and sexually abused me.”

Gritzewsky was speaking with the support of UN Watch, a nongovernmental organization dedicated to monitoring the UN. She revealed that she suffered sexual assault at the hands of at least seven members of Hamas.

The survivor then addressed Reem Alsalem, the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, drawing attention to a previous report that Alsalem had authored.

‘Ms. Alsalem, you say there was no evidence of sexual violence on October 7,’ Gritzewsky said. ‘I am standing here today, not as a report, not as a statistic. I am a woman who survived. I am the living proof of sexual violence by Hamas.’

She added: ‘When I and other Israeli women begged not to be raped, why were you silent? Please look at me. Do you believe us now? Will you apologize?’

Alsalem looked nonplussed by the stirring testimony, pursing her lips and slightly bobbling her head as Gritzewsky finished her grueling account.

Gritzewsky began her testimony by referencing Alsalem’s report about violence against women before asking her: ‘Why is there no mention of Hamas?’

She said she had been ‘beaten and mutilated before blacking out.’

‘I w[o]ke up half naked with seven terrorists standing over me, not knowing what happened to me in those lost moments,’ Gritzewsky added.

Gritzewsky was released on November 30, 2023, during a weeklong ceasefire, according to The New York Times.

She and other women and children were released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, the outlet reported.

After being freed, she found out that her hip was broken. Gritzewsky told the UN that she was still reeling from being taken hostage.

‘I went through days of pain and horror in captivity and, even now, the feeling of being powerless and violated still lingers,’ Gritzewsky said.

She added: ‘I came back with a broken hip, a broken jaw and a scarred soul. People see my face and think that I’m free but freedom is not a switch. Trauma doesn’t vanish once you are released.’

In December, Alsalem wrote that she had only received a report ‘of sexual and gender–based violence’ against Israeli women from Physicians for Human Rights Israel.

‘This report was essentially a compilation of information drawn from Israeli sources, including government sources such as the Israeli army, and media outlets,’ Alsalem said.

Alsalem has been the UN’s Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls since August 2021.

She added that Physicians for Human Rights Israel later acknowledged the shortcomings in the report, linking to a copy in which the organization said that some testimonies referenced had ‘been disputed or deemed unverifiable.’

Alsalem wrote: ‘As such, it has been impossible for me to engage on the specific reports of sexual and gender–based violence relating to any individual victim or group of victims arising from the events of 7 October 2023.’

She accused Israel of refusing to cooperate and wrote she had ‘received credible information from victims and their representatives that I was able to corroborate’ regarding Palestinian women and girls.

Alsalem told the Daily Mail on Friday morning that she ‘was looking at Gritsewksy [sic] and listening to her.’

‘I also responded to her in my response to speakers at the end of my interactive dialogue, including to say that I am open to meeting her if she and other survivors of 7th October want to meet me,’ she added.

‘Neither she nor any former hostage, their family, lawyers or representative have not been contacted before, during or after my presentations at the human rights council.’

The UN said in 2024 that it had found ‘reasonable grounds’ to believe that Hamas committed rape and other sexual violence on October 7, according to the Associated Press.

The prosecutor for the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, previously said he had reason to believe that three Hamas leaders were responsible for ‘rape and other acts of sexual violence as crimes against humanity.’

In her report, Alsalem linked to a December 2023 press release in which UN experts said they ‘expressed serious concern over the hostage–taking of Israeli women and girls by Hamas.’

The Embassy of Israel to the US reacted to Gritzewsky’s remarks on X, writing that Hamas’ sexual abuse of Israeli women had been ‘ignored by the UN and dismissed by the world.’

‘Shame on the UN for enabling a culture of rape apologists,’ the embassy wrote Tuesday.

Honoring Pat Summitt: A Decade Later, Her Unmatched Legacy Continues to Inspire

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Pat Summitt wasn’t just the architect of the Lady Vols dynasty; she left an indelible impact on East Tennessee, revolutionized women’s sports globally, and became a significant figure in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

In East Tennessee, the color “Summit Blue” is synonymous with Pat Summitt, a name that remains unforgettable nearly a decade after her passing. Her influential legacy continues to resonate in Knoxville and across the globe.

“Pat Summitt is Lady Vols Basketball,” stated Maria Cornelius, the author of The Final Season: The Perseverance of Pat Summitt. “She established the benchmark for women’s basketball, a legacy that persists to this day and will likely never be surpassed.”

This sentiment encapsulates a legacy that spans many decades at Tennessee. During her tenure, Summitt guided the Lady Vols to eight national championships, reached 18 Final Fours, and earned the title of Naismith Coach of the Year five times. She concluded her remarkable 38-year career with over 1,000 victories, all achieved in the iconic Tennessee Orange.

“She put them on the map. I mean, she sold out Thompson-Boling Arena. She agreed to play anyone, anywhere. UCONN-Tennessee was a game everyone knew. Everyone watched, and that’s all because Pat said ‘yes.’ She was not just a basketball coach. She wanted to promote the game, grow the game, produce young women who were ready for life after basketball,” said Cornelius.

“People see the images, the Sports Illustrated cover, was she that tough of a coach? Yes. I mean, there’s no soft pedaling that. But she also was a mother, and she also was a second mother to all these players,” Cornelius added.

For many, her greatest impact came away from the hardwood. She demanded excellence off the court, in the classroom, in the community and in life. Before her passing in 2016 after battling Alzheimer’s disease, she made it her mission to raise awareness, support research, and help those impacted.

“For Pat, it was everything that happened off the court that mattered just as much. She started the Pat Summitt Foundation right after she was diagnosed, with her son, Tyler. So, you know, a lot of people, you get that kind of diagnosis. You’re going to retreat. You’re not going to be in the public eye. She coached another season, knowing the cameras were on her all the time. She’s established a foundation. She put that disease front and center,” said Cornelius.

“Alzheimer’s is a disease that makes you forget…and I would tell people, please do not ever forget Pat Summitt,” Cornelius added.

Pat also helped bring the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame to Knoxville, further cementing her impact on the game and helping to honor generations of women in sports.

This year’s Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place Saturday at the historic Tennessee Theatre in Downtown Knoxville. One of Pat Summitt’s former Lady Vols, Candace Parker, will be inducted.

Court Schedules Ruling Date on New Investigation into Mohbad’s Death

The Federal High Court in Abuja has earmarked September 29 to issue a ruling on a case that calls for an intensified investigation into the circumstances that led to the singer Mohbad’s death.

On Thursday, June 25, Justice James Omotosho set this date after considering submissions from Chief Tunde Falola, representing the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation.

The foundation had filed the suit, urging the court to order the Nigeria Police Force to reopen its investigation into Mohbad’s passing.

However, the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police all listed as respondents were absent and not represented during the proceedings.

With no counter-arguments presented, Falola adopted all filed processes on behalf of the foundation and asked the court to grant the reliefs being sought.

Adrian Portelli Celebrates Family Moment with Karlie Butler and Newborn Son

Adrian ‘Mr Lambo’ Portelli, a figure known for his intriguing bids on “The Block,” recently made a public appearance with his seldom-seen girlfriend, Karlie Butler, and their newborn son. This outing marks the first time they have been seen together as a family.

Mere days before, the 34-year-old millionaire property investor shared the joyous news of their son’s birth through a heartfelt Instagram post on Wednesday, revealing that they welcomed the little one two days prior.

The family’s first public sighting came on Thursday as they departed from the opulent Park Hyatt Melbourne. The couple had introduced their son to the world at East Melbourne Hospital earlier in the week.

Adrian sported a casual yet stylish look, donning a black T-shirt and grey shorts, perfectly complemented by white trainers and a black baseball cap, as he prepared to leave the luxe venue.

As they exited the luxury hotel, Adrian proceeded to load up their sleek $300,000 grey Aston Martin SUV. This lavish vehicle was an earlier gift for Karlie during her pregnancy, underscoring the couple’s affectionate bond.

Unveiling the Mystery Caller in ‘The Bear’ Season 5: Explained

Award-winning comedy series The Bear, aired on FX, is wrapping up with its fifth and final season. However, before the curtain falls, Carmy (portrayed by Jeremy Allen White) has some unfinished business—like picking up his phone when it rings.

Warning: Spoilers for Season 5 of The Bear are ahead.

As the final eight episodes of The Bear unfold, viewers are eager to uncover answers to pressing questions: Will the restaurant earn that coveted Michelin star? Is Carmy going to abandon his culinary career? Will Unc choose to expand the business into a franchise? And importantly, will Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Jess (Sarah Ramos) finally share a kiss? Curiosity only grew with the emergence of unexpected inquiries, such as the mystery of the missing spoons—and most intriguingly, who’s persistently calling Carmy?

In the season’s opening episode, Carmy receives a call from an Unknown Caller while he chats with Sydney (played by Ayo Edebiri) in the kitchen. Noticing him ignore the call, Sydney quips, “Wish I had the courage to not answer my phone.” (Let’s not forget she was a master at dodging Adam Shapiro’s calls in the previous season!)

Carmy responds to Sydney’s comment with, “I wouldn’t call it courage.” When pressed on what he means, he simply says, “The opposite,” implying cowardice. The mysterious caller tries again in Episode 4 and then later during a touching moment in Episode 7 with Sugar (Abby Elliott) and Donna (Jamie Lee Curtis). Still, Carmy doesn’t answer. However, by the series finale of The Bear, the identity of the Unknown Caller finally comes to light.

Major finale spoilers lie ahead. So major. Don’t read on if you aren’t OK with being spoiled!

So who’s calling Carmy in The Bear Season 5? Who’s the Unknown Caller? Who is Peter Clark? And what does he want? Read on for answers from The Bear Season 5, Episode 8, “The Original Beef of Chicagoland.”

Who’s Calling Carmy In The Bear Season 5? Who’s The Unknown Caller In The Bear?

When Sugar finds Carmy outside the restaurant in the finale, she tells him someone named Peter Clark left her a message saying he’s been trying to reach him. Carm says he doesn’t know who he is, and he’s telling the truth! But detail-oriented fans of The Bear may connect the dots…

When the Unknown Caller Carmy’s been dodging all season rings again, Carmy answers and Peter Clark, says, “You’re a hard guy to get a hold of. I called you seven times.” Still confused, Carmy asks, “Sorry, what is this about?” and we finally learn who Peter Clark is.

Turns out, those who watched The Bear Season 4 you already met Peter Clark! We just knew him as Mr. Clark, aka the Star Man who visited The Bear on the magical fake snow night.

If you need a detailed refresher on Gary Janetti’s character, Decider’s got you covered. But in Season 4, Episode 3, a seemingly minor character named Mr. Clark cane into the picture. It was the only time we saw him all season, but those who were listening attentively knew he had the potential to make a major impact on the series — and he did!

Mr. Clark dined at The Bear the night of Richie’s epic beef sandwich/fake snow and hot chocolate surprise for a family whose daughter had been cancer-free for six months. He sat next to the family’s table and gushed over the “extraordinary” scallop dish and “excellent” service. Richie got Mr. Clark his own sandwich and on his way out he caught a glimpse of the manufactured winter wonderland. When he got in his car and viewers finally learned his name, however, we realized he was a Michelin inspector.

How’d we know?! Earlier in Season 4 we learned, “They use a weird last name — like a street in the city they’re visiting,” and there’s a major street called Clark Street in Chicago with ties to the city’s history, music, sports, restaurants, and more. So what did Peter Clark want with Carmy?

Does The Bear Earn A Michelin Star?

While we don’t hear Peter and Carmy’s conversation, after he hangs up, Sydney catches him heavily breathing in the hall and asks what’s wrong. He tells her that Star Man from the night before (Mr. Dearborn, also a Chicago street!) was just a regular guest, but Peter Clark visited a couple months ago, adored her scallop dish, the culinary creativity, the undeniable talent, and The Bears ambiance.

When Sydney asks if they got a star, Carm shakes his head no then reveals THEY GOT TWO. Let’s go, Peter Clark! That’s our MAN right there. Tragic Alabama Tale: Woman Strangled, Boyfriend Suffers Fatal Heart Attack While Hiding Her Body

0

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Ala. (WRBL) — Authorities in Alabama have revealed disturbing details in the case of a woman found dead in Chambers County earlier this month. The woman, who was identified as having been strangled to death, appears to be the victim of a tragic sequence of events. Investigators now suspect that her boyfriend died of a heart attack while trying to hide her body after allegedly killing her.

District Attorney Mike Segrest from Chambers County disclosed that the individuals involved were 47-year-old Jessica Folds, a resident of Lanett, and 44-year-old Daniel Robbins from Macon, Georgia, who were in a romantic relationship.

The autopsy reports conclude that Folds succumbed to strangulation. Meanwhile, Robbins, her boyfriend, was found to have died due to a heart attack.

Investigators postulate that Robbins is responsible for the murder of Folds. It’s thought that he was attempting to dispose of her body when the deadly heart attack struck.

When deputies arrived at the scene on June 10, along the 1000 block of Chambers County Road 86 near Lanett, they encountered Robbins’ truck still running. The truck’s tailgate was open, and investigators noted drag marks in the dirt. These marks led to where Folds’ body was discovered, supporting the belief that Robbins had begun moving her body before he collapsed.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the case at the request of the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office. No additional information has been released.

Elon Musk Faces Deposition Over Alleged Vote-Buying Scandal

(The Hill) — On Thursday, a federal judge mandated that Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, provide sworn testimony in connection with two lawsuits alleging he deceived voters in critical swing states ahead of the 2024 general elections.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan Hightower from the Western District of Texas instructed Musk to appear for a deposition related to a fraud suit filed by two women from Arizona. They allege that Musk’s political action committee, America PAC, misled voters into divulging personal information as part of a scheme claiming to distribute $1 million daily until Election Day.

This promise was made by Musk during an October 2024 town hall gathering in Pennsylvania, where he pledged monetary rewards contingent on signing a petition associated with America PAC.

“The sole requirement for the million-dollar offer is for you to become a spokesperson for the petition,” Musk informed a selected audience member during the event.

Judge Hightower noted the unresolved issue of whether Musk acted irresponsibly with his promise to “randomly” distribute money, as reported by Reuters. She referenced testimony from February 2026 given by America PAC’s director, Christopher Young, who expressed his “surprise” at Musk’s statement.

Plaintiffs Joy Harvick and Jacqueline McAferty accused Musk and America PAC of misleading voters across seven swing states by having them sign his petition, the outlet reported. They said the 19 winners were chosen because, quoting a Musk lawyer, they could be good spokespeople for America PAC.

Musk made similar pledges in other states, including Michigan. In October 2025, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner (D) sued Musk and America PAC over the giveaways, calling them “illegal lotteries.” Musk sought to move the lawsuit to federal court.

Rick Hasen, a University of California, Los Angeles Law School political science professor, said the law prohibits paying people for voting or registering to vote.

“If all he was doing was paying people to sign the petition, that might be a waste of money. But there’s nothing illegal about it,” Hasen told the Associated Press in October 2024. “The problem is that the only people eligible to participate in this giveaway are the people who are registered to vote. And that makes it illegal.”
