George Burgess Bout Marks Most Embarrassing Moment in 40 Years of Australian Boxing: Expert Analysis

0

In over four decades of following Australian boxing, I’ve never witnessed a match as mortifying, chaotic, and utterly uncomfortable as the dismal showdown between George Burgess and Nelson Asofa-Solomona.

This is not to discredit George’s performance on Wednesday evening.

Displaying admirable courage, he continued to throw punches despite suffering a tear in his left pectoral muscle during the first round and enduring substantial blows that left him clearly dazed.

This clash of rugby league’s tough men took place just before the eagerly anticipated world title match between Australian contender Liam Paro and Northern Ireland’s Lewis Crocker, a bout of such remarkable caliber that it drew the attention of boxing aficionados worldwide.

Remarkably, the event was even covered through a live blog by the BBC.

Any overseas fight aficionados who tuned in, oblivious to the sort of stoushes that have been passing as headline bouts in Australia for the last few years, would have been utterly dismayed by what they saw at Brisbane’s Pat Rafter Arena.

The cringe element kicked in fiercely before either man had even thrown a punch.

Burgess – who had never fought professionally before – staged a walkout that gave new meaning to the term ‘over the top’.

He took an age to make his way to the ring as musician Conrad Sewell sang him out to the hit tune Firestone, with the ex-Souths star holding his arms aloft like a world champion and high-fiving the crowd.

‘NAS’ followed with a guitarist performing the riff from Bon Jovi’s Livin’ On A Prayer for what seemed like an age before the towering footy star emerged in dramatic fashion as soon as the song kicked into its famous chorus.

If you didn’t know who these blokes are – like everyone watching overseas – you would’ve assumed they were fighting for the Australian heavyweight title.

When the bell sounded to start round one, it was almost instantly obvious that Burgess was dangerously out of his depth.

No balance, no idea how to throw his punches, keeping his head still and held up high, taking his eyes off the man trying to knock him out – he made all the mistakes you’d expect of an absolute novice in their first sparring session.

But this was a million miles away from practising in the gym with headgear on against a well-matched opponent.

Asofa-Solomona has very little boxing nous himself, but he does have three pro fights and much more training under his belt, not to mention a right hand that could dent steel plate.

Before the bout I was worried that Burgess, who came into the ring looking out of shape and had refused to reveal any footage of his training, could get seriously hurt.

Those worries grew with every second he was in the ring.

The 34-year-old ate some massive punches and responded by lashing out wildly, throwing himself off balance so badly he almost fell over without being hit, and looking for all the world like he’d been recruited for the fight in the car park outside the arena five minutes before the bell sounded.

The fact Asofa-Solomona didn’t knock him out in the first round should be a big worry for him and his team. You will probably never see a fighter who’s easier to hit than Burgess was.

The shambles kept going after the bell to end the first round, as Burgess wobbled back to his corner, only to find his seconds had forgotten to put the stool out for him – one of the most basic jobs they have, especially when their man is almost out on his feet.

Things got far worse from there.

Burgess actually managed to tag his man with some right hands, but he was getting absolutely punished and often appeared not to know where he was.

On more than one occasion, when the ref stepped in to break up a clinch, the Englishman turned his back on ‘NAS’ and was looking out into the crowd.

The ref had to direct him back to the action in scenes that would be very worrying for experienced fight fans.

When a boxer turns their back on an opponent, it’s either regarded as a foul for illegally trying to avoid contact – which was not the case on Wednesday night – or a sign that the fighter is so outmatched or badly hurt that they don’t want to continue.

Burgess wasn’t asked if he wanted to stop.

I was yelling for the fight to be ended before his courage backfired on him and he got seriously hurt.

The towel came in far too late, in my opinion. And when it did, there was another bizarre scene as Asofa-Solomona picked it up and wiped blood off his opponent’s face before the cornermen could get to him.

Burgess wasn’t even stopped by a punch. Nelson just leaned his 140kg bulk on him until he sank to the canvas, looking totally spent, eyes wide and unable to focus.

Now put yourself in an overseas fight fan’s shoes again.

You’ve just seen one of the headline fights on a huge card, and it looked for all the world like two blokes throwing haymakers outside a pub after necking a few too many beers on a Saturday night.

Burgess fought on despite tearing his left pectoral muscle in the first round. Nobody could question his courage, but his technique was non-existent

You’d be excused for asking, ‘What the hell is going on down there?’

It’s the biggest black eye for Aussie boxing in my memory.

Tim Tszyu, who was on the panel commentating on the fight, called it ‘tough as hell to watch’, which was a giant understatement.

I get why footy stars keep getting paid to punch each other on proper boxing cards.

Years from now, I reckon you’ll find promising Aussie fighters who got into the game because of the big coverage bouts like this generated.

The sport is in a battle with the UFC when it comes to attracting viewers and money, and Dana White and his team have shown up boxing in a big way by pitting champion against champion, with one world title for each weight division instead of the muddled alphabet of belts boxers can win.

So by all means, if footy stars want to throw leather at each other, keep putting them in the spotlight.

But for crying out loud, don’t make them one of the headline acts on a card like this.

Don’t hype them up like they’re the second coming of Mike Tyson.

And please, don’t put them in the ring if they can’t box worth a lick.

DCLM Daily Manna 25 June 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Kiss of Death

TOPIC: Kiss of Death (DCLM Daily Manna 25 June 2026)

KEY VERSE: And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him – Luke 22:47

TEXT: Luke 22:47-51 (KJV)

47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.

48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

49 When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

There are many things we do that we think should make God happy. We may be very dutiful in the house of God, never delinquent in rendering service to the church, and giving generously to the work of God. We may be utilising our talents, skills and abilities to the recognition of others in the kingdom of God. But God sees beyond our actions and peers into our motives, even if we are acting in a traditionally accepted manner. And that is what matters to Him.

Jesus had just been strengthened by an angel as He prayed in the garden on the night He was about to be arrested. As He challenged His disciples not to sleep but to pray lest they fell into temptation, a large mob with various dangerous weapons arrived. They were led by Judas Iscariot, who walked boldly up to Jesus to kiss Him, for that was the sign he had given the Jewish leaders to identify Christ. As he approached, Jesus confronted him, questioning, “Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?” He knew that a kiss was a traditional way of greeting friends, but now, someone He called a friend had turned a traitor and was using a kiss to betray the Son of God. When His disciples saw what was happening, they sought His permission to fight back with swords. One of them did not wait but went ahead to slice off the right ear of the servant of the high priest. Jesus promptly stopped them, touched the servant’s ear, and healed it.

Whatever service we render to God, no matter how qualitative it may seem, if its purposes are for anything other than to glorify God, it becomes an act of betrayal of the Lord who had entrusted us with such a role. It could be that we possess a good knowledge of the Scripture and can teach and preach convincingly or we can minister through songs to rouse an entire congregation, or we have the gift of prayer and faith to attract supernatural intervention from God. If the motive is insincere or aimed at showing off our skills or to attract the applause of men, it ceases to please God and becomes an act of treachery. Our hearts must be pure, our purposes noble, and our goal God-honouring; otherwise, our service would be considered a kiss of death.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The Lord is never impressed by any outward service bereft of inward sincerity

Rhapsody Of Realities 25 June 2026: Refuse To Be Limited By The Flesh

Rhapsody Of Realities 25 June 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): Refuse To Be Limited By The Flesh

TOPIC: Refuse To Be Limited By The Flesh (Rhapsody of Realities 25 June 2026)

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit (Romans 8:5).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

As a Christian, you’re not to live by the dictates of the flesh. You’re not called to respond to life on the basis of what you feel, see, or experience physically; you’re called to live from your spirit. The flesh will always try to impose limitations of age, weakness, ill health, and lack, but you’re of the Spirit and not of the flesh.

Recall the words of the Lord Jesus in John 3:6, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” You’re born of the Spirit; you’re not defined by your body, and you’re not limited by physical conditions; you’re enabled by the life of God in you.

Some judge their lives by the feelings in their bodies; they say, “I feel weak,” “I feel tired,” “I can’t do this.” But that’s living from the flesh. You don’t live by how you feel; you live by who you are. You don’t respond to the emotions or sensations of the flesh; you respond to the Word.

The Bible says, “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16). Your outward man may be weakening, but your inward man, the real you, is renewed daily. Your spirit is constantly rejuvenated, full of strength and divine vitality.

No wonder Paul, by the Spirit, tells us in Romans 8:11 that if the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, that same Spirit shall vitalize your mortal body. And thanks be unto God, He lives in you; therefore, your body is quickened, energized, and made alive by His Spirit that dwells in you. Blessed be God!

Refuse to accept limitations. Refuse to speak weakness. Refuse to align yourself with the senses. You have a life that’s beyond this world; therefore, live from within, from your spirit, and you’ll walk in strength and victory because your life is governed by the Spirit of God who lives in you.

CONFESSION

Dear Father, thank you for teaching me to live from my spirit. I refuse to be limited by the flesh or by natural conditions. I walk in the consciousness of who I am in Christ; I live above this world and its disabling influences. I walk in the dominion of the Spirit, manifesting the Christ-life in me, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

FURTHER STUDY

Romans 8:5-6 (KJV)
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. [6] For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (KJV)
For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. [17] For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; [18] While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Romans 8:10-11 (KJV)
And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. [11] But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Effective Arm Exercises to Firm Up Sagging Arms in Just 30 Days for Those Over 60

0

Want to boost your arm strength after the age of 60? These six effective standing exercises are designed to engage and tone your biceps, triceps, and shoulders.

>

Sagging around the upper arms is a common concern, but the real objective should be building strong biceps, triceps, shoulders, and upper-back support. By consistently applying resistance to these muscles, you’ll likely observe firmer, more resilient arms, along with an improved shape. In just 30 days, a committed routine with a focus on purposeful movements can ignite momentum, enhance muscle tone, and result in noticeable strength improvements.

Standing arm exercises offer a dynamic approach by going beyond basic curls and extensions. This method engages your entire body, keeping your legs active, relying on your core for stability, and training your shoulders to master movement control while your arms do the heavy lifting. A well-rounded program should begin with compound exercises to lay a strong foundation, followed by isolation exercises targeting the biceps, triceps, and shoulders for a more focused impact.

In this regimen, consider compound exercises as the cornerstone and isolation moves as the finishing touch. Maintain an upright posture, aligning your ribs over your hips, and ensure that the weights are lifted through muscle engagement rather than momentum. This adjustment transforms the entire workout, leading to cleaner repetitions, prolonged muscle tension, and a more concentrated training session.

Incorporate these six standing exercises into your routine over the next 30 days, performing them two to four times each week. Always start with the compound movements and conclude with the isolation exercises. Select a weight or resistance band that enables proper movement while ensuring the last few repetitions are challenging, optimizing your strength-building efforts.

Dumbbell Push Press

The dumbbell push press targets your shoulders, triceps, upper chest, core, and legs in a single powerful standing movement. A small leg drive helps you press the weights overhead, while your arms and shoulders finish the rep with control. This makes it a strong compound exercise for tightening the upper arms because it trains pressing strength and shoulder shape together. Keep the dip small and finish each rep with your arms strong overhead.

Muscles Trained: Shoulders, triceps, upper chest, core, legs.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height.
  3. Brace your core and bend your knees slightly.
  4. Drive through your legs as you press the dumbbells overhead.
  5. Straighten your arms at the top without shrugging.
  6. Lower the dumbbells back to your shoulders with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps. Rest for 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Single-arm push press, strict dumbbell shoulder press, band overhead press.

Form Tip: Use your legs to start the press, then let your shoulders and triceps finish the movement.

6 Daily Exercises To Shrink Hanging Belly Fat Better Than Gym Sessions After 60

Dumbbell Bent-Over Row

Dumbbell bent-over rows train your upper back, lats, rear shoulders, biceps, grip, and core. The pulling motion gives your biceps strong compound work while your upper back helps support better posture and shoulder position. Stronger posture muscles can make the arms look more lifted and supported, and the dumbbells add a clear strength-building challenge. Keep your hinge steady and row with control, rather than rushing the reps.

Muscles Trained: Upper back, lats, rear delts, biceps, core, grip.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Soften your knees and hinge your hips back.
  3. Keep your spine long and brace your core.
  4. Let the dumbbells hang below your shoulders.
  5. Pull your elbows back toward your ribs.
  6. Lower the dumbbells with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Single-arm dumbbell rows, supported dumbbell rows, paused bent-over rows.

Form Tip: Keep your torso steady and pull through your elbows.

Dumbbell Curl to Press

The dumbbell curl-to-press trains your biceps, shoulders, triceps, and core. The curl targets your biceps directly, and the press engages your shoulders and triceps. Combining both movements keeps the routine efficient and gives your arms more total time under tension. Move smoothly from the curl into the press, then lower with control so the muscles stay active through the full rep.

Muscles Trained: Biceps, shoulders, triceps, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Brace your core and keep your elbows near your ribs.
  3. Curl the dumbbells to shoulder height.
  4. Press the dumbbells overhead.
  5. Lower the dumbbells back to your shoulders.
  6. Return the weights to your sides with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps. Rest for 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Alternating curl to press, single-arm curl to press, band curl to press.

Form Tip: Keep your torso still during the curl and press the weights overhead without leaning back.

If You Can Ace These 5 Stability Moves at 60, Your Balance Is Top-Notch

Dumbbell Biceps Curl

Dumbbell biceps curls give the front of your upper arms direct attention. After the compound pulling work, curls help finish the biceps with a clear, focused strength signal. Stronger biceps support lifting, carrying, pulling, and everyday tasks that require grip and elbow strength. Keep your elbows steady and control the lowering phase to make each rep more effective.

Muscles Trained: Biceps, forearms, grip.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Keep your palms facing forward and your elbows near your sides.
  3. Brace your core and keep your shoulders relaxed.
  4. Curl the dumbbells toward your shoulders.
  5. Squeeze your biceps at the top.
  6. Lower the dumbbells with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Hammer curls, alternating curls, band curls.

Form Tip: Keep your elbows still and make the biceps lift the weight.

Band Triceps Pressdown

Band triceps pressdowns train the back of the upper arms, where many people notice sagging most. The band keeps tension on the triceps as you straighten your elbows, making the exercise simple and effective at home. Stronger triceps help your arms look firmer and also support pressing movements, getting up from chairs, and pushing tasks. Keep your upper arms pinned by your sides and finish each rep with a strong squeeze.

Muscles Trained: Triceps, shoulders, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Anchor a resistance band above chest height.
  2. Stand tall and hold one end of the band in each hand.
  3. Bend your elbows and keep them close to your sides.
  4. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  5. Press your hands down until your arms straighten.
  6. Return to the starting position with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 12 to 15 reps. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Single-arm pressdowns, overhead band triceps extensions, paused pressdowns.

Form Tip: Keep your elbows close to your ribs and squeeze the back of your arms at the bottom.

6 No-Equipment Moves That Build Strength Like Weight Training After 60

Dumbbell Lateral Raise

Dumbbell lateral raises target the shoulders, especially the side delts. Stronger shoulders help create more shape around the upper arms, making them look tighter and more defined. This is an isolation exercise, so light weights and clean reps work best. Raise the dumbbells with control, pause near shoulder height, and lower slowly.

Muscles Trained: Shoulders, side delts, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with a light dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Keep your arms at your sides with a slight bend in your elbows.
  3. Brace your core and keep your shoulders relaxed.
  4. Raise the dumbbells out to your sides.
  5. Stop when your arms reach shoulder height.
  6. Lower the dumbbells with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Single-arm lateral raises, band lateral raises, slower tempo lateral raises.

Form Tip: Lead with your elbows and keep the movement smooth, rather than swinging the weights.

How to Tighten Sagging Arms in 30 Days After 60

A 30-day arm plan works best when you train the arms directly while also using compound moves that involve more muscle. Start with the three compound exercises to build strength through the shoulders, upper back, biceps, and triceps. Then use the isolation exercises to give each key area extra work.

  • Train arms two to four days per week: Give your arms consistent work while allowing enough recovery between sessions. Most people do well with a day between harder arm workouts.
  • Start with compound exercises: Push presses, rows, and curl-to-press reps train multiple muscles at once. These movements increase overall effort and prepare your arms for isolation work.
  • Finish with isolation exercises: Curls, press-downs, and lateral raises provide more direct tension to the biceps, triceps, and shoulders. These are the exercises where clean reps and a strong squeeze matter most.
  • Make the final reps challenging: Choose weights or band tension that make the last two or three reps feel meaningful while your form stays solid.
  • Support the visual changes: Daily walking, protein-focused meals, hydration, and consistent sleep all help your strength work show up more clearly.

Thirty days gives you enough time to build consistency and feel stronger in your upper body. Press, pull, curl, extend, and raise with control, and your arms will have a clear reason to feel firmer and look more supported.

Ricky Gervais’ Impressive Net Worth Revealed: Why He Chooses to Donate Millions

Ricky Gervais is a celebrated English comedian, actor, writer, and director, whose work has won acclaim across various entertainment mediums.

He catapulted to international prominence in 2001 with the co-creation and starring role in the groundbreaking BBC mockumentary sitcom, The Office.

Now marking his 65th birthday on June 25, Gervais boasts an impressive career spanning over four decades. From his humble beginnings as an unsuccessful pop singer in the 1980s, he has emerged as one of comedy’s most influential and wealthy personalities.

The question remains: what paved the way for Gervais’s remarkable ascent to success?

We examine his distinguished career below, how he amassed his fortune, and why he donates so much to charity.

Early career and music (1980s–1990s).

Before establishing himself in comedy, Gervais, from Whitley, Reading, pursued a career in the music business.

While studying philosophy at University College London, he formed the New Wave pop duo Seona Dancing. The band split after securing only a modest hit in the Philippines.

After his musical endeavours, he worked as an entertainment manager for a student union and briefly managed the then-emerging alternative rock band Suede.

In 1996, he joined the London radio station XFM and recruited Stephen Merchant as his assistant, igniting a legendary writing and comedy collaboration.

Television breakthroughs and hit sitcoms

Gervais has established a reputation for producing critically acclaimed, self-contained television programmes, deliberately keeping them brief to conclude on a high note.

The Office (2001–2003): Gervais co-created the show with Merchant in 2001, with it running up until 2003. This cringe-comedy mockumentary redefined television sitcoms and saw Gervais star as David Brent, an agonisingly oblivious office manager. The show was remade into a massively successful American version, on which Gervais served as an executive producer.

Extras (2005–2007): Another Gervais-Merchant collaboration, starring Gervais as Andy Millman, a desperate background actor. The series satirised the entertainment industry and featured major A-list stars playing self-deprecating versions of themselves.

Derek (2012–2014): Gervais’s first major solo TV venture, where he wrote, directed, and starred as a sweet, naive care worker in a nursing home.

After Life (2019–2022): A critically acclaimed dark comedy-drama on Netflix. Gervais starred as Tony, a local journalist navigating severe grief and loss after the death of his wife.

Stand-up comedy and global tours

Gervais is a hugely successful arena-filling stand-up comedian whose approach is characterised by unapologetic observational humour, dark comedy, and an outspoken commitment to free speech.

His 2023 Netflix special Armageddon claimed a Golden Globe and included a Hollywood Bowl performance that secured a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the highest-grossing single comedy stand-up show in history. He built on his worldwide acclaim by taking his latest live show, Mortality, on tour, which subsequently launched as a Netflix stand-up special and earned him yet another Golden Globe for Best Stand-Up Comedy Performance.

Hollywood films and hosting

Beyond the small screen, Gervais has carved out a distinctive presence in Hollywood and live broadcasting.

He wrote, directed, and starred in The Invention of Lying (2009), co-directed Cemetery Junction (2010), and appeared in major Hollywood productions such as Ghost Town (2008) and the Night at the Museum trilogy.

Gervais also hosted the Golden Globe Awards on five occasions (2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2020), becoming renowned for his ruthless, un-PC skewering of Hollywood’s finest, which attracted both widespread admiration and considerable media controversy.

Other ventures

Gervais fronts The Ricky Gervais Show – an enormously popular podcast and broadcast alongside Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington that was subsequently adapted into an animated series by HBO.

He is also a co-owner of Ellers Farm Distillery, leveraging his comedic profile to promote Dutch Barn Vodka on a global scale.

Staggering net worth

As of 2026, Ricky Gervais has an estimated net worth of £125 million. While he refrains from publicising his total lifetime charitable contributions, he regularly donates millions of pounds directly from his hugely lucrative stand-up comedy tours, with animal welfare remaining his primary cause.

Gervais ranks amongst the top 20 wealthiest comedians in the world, with his fortune principally derived from three key sources. The first of these is The Office syndication, with the star reportedly holding a 10% backend stake in the franchise.

The enormous syndication and streaming rights of the American version continue to generate millions for him each year.

Netflix also regularly pays the star an estimated £15 million per stand-up special, alongside lucrative licensing deals for his acclaimed scripted series such as After Life.

Gervais consistently commands some of the highest-grossing comedy performances in history, earning over £1.4 million from a single evening during his Armageddon tour.

Charitable giving

Gervais is a passionate, outspoken champion of animal rights and directs almost all of his public charitable contributions towards animal rescues and welfare organisations.

The star calibrates his donations by charging higher prices for the nearest “platinum” arena seats, guaranteeing fans that 100% of the additional profit from these premium tickets goes straight to charity.

His premium ticket approach across his four most recent arena tours has raised and donated well over £5 million directly to charitable causes.

Following his Armageddon tour, he donated £1.91 million, dividing it equally amongst 11 international wildlife and domestic animal organisations.

He also distributed £2.43 million across 22 different animal charities worldwide after his Mortality tour. Beneficiaries included prominent organisations such as the PDSA and Animals Asia, alongside small, specialist shelters.

A tragic hit-and-run incident in New Jersey left two women dead as they returned home from a World Cup viewing party on Saturday night, as captured by distressing video footage.

The victims, identified as 58-year-old Mariana Elizabeth Valverde Beltran and 61-year-old Maria Isabel DeLosAngeles Salgado Ayala, were crossing at the intersection of Park Avenue and North 7th Street in Newark when they were violently hit by an oncoming vehicle, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Surveillance footage from the scene revealed that 26-year-old David J. Zapata-Vera was driving the vehicle that plowed through the intersection, striking Beltran and Ayala with such force that they were thrown into the air, as reported by WABC.

Witnesses claimed that Zapata-Vera accelerated just as the traffic light was about to change, contributing to the tragic collision in the crosswalk.

“I don’t know if he was drunk, but he pressed the gas, and that’s what happened,” Manuel Candelaria told the news outlet.

The women were rushed to University Hospital Newark, where they were pronounced dead.

Relatives of the women were left traumatized by their deaths.

“You have to live with this for the rest of your life. I hope the person is found but also for that person it’s something you have to live with for the rest of your life, it’s on your conscience,” Beltran’s cousin, Jeffrey Chacon, told WABC.

“My dad is managing his emotions with trying to contact everyone in Ecuador, her sisters, her son,” he added.

Zapata-Vera, of Newark, surrendered to police on Tuesday, three days after the deadly crash.

He was charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, two counts of second-degree leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, and two counts of third-degree endangering an injured victim.

Zapata-Vera is being held in Essex County jail without bond, according to jail records viewed by The Post.

Woman Associated with Transgender Zizian Cult Faces Charges in Parents’ Murder Conspiracy on 30th Birthday

A woman who is reportedly affiliated with a sect known as the Zizians has been charged with orchestrating the murder of her parents, as claimed by prosecutors on Wednesday. They allege that she organized the tragic event to coincide with her 30th birthday and had accomplices.

Michelle Zajko, now 33, is facing charges of murder, burglary, and conspiracy related to the deaths of her parents, Rita and Richard Zajko. The couple was discovered fatally shot in their Chester Heights, Pennsylvania, residence on New Year’s Eve in 2022.

Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse commented that authorities suspect Zajko played a role in the planning of these murders, although the identity of the shooter remains unknown.

“Currently, we have not identified her accomplices, but we are confident that Michelle Zajko was present in the home and orchestrated her parents’ deaths,” Rouse stated.

Michelle Zajko is escorted into a courthouse for a pretrial hearing in Cumberland, Maryland, on Jan. 16, 2026.

Prosecutors said the case was built through years of investigative work involving cellphone analysis, ballistic evidence and footage from a neighbor’s doorbell camera. According to investigators, the video captured two people arriving at the home shortly before the killings and recorded someone shouting “Mom!” moments before the shootings, according to prosecutors.

Authorities also recovered shell casings they say matched ammunition linked to Zajko’s Vermont property and backyard firing range.

“If she wasn’t the one who actually pulled the trigger, she was certainly aligned with those who did,” Rouse said.

Zajko has denied involvement in the killings.

“I didn’t murder my parents,” she wrote in an April 2025 “Open Letter to the World.”

Prosecutors said Zajko had become estranged from her parents in the year before their deaths. Hours before she was killed, Rita Zajko texted her daughter to apologize for the rift between them and wish her a happy birthday.

“That text went unanswered,” Rouse said.

Authorities have long identified Zajko as a person of interest in the case. She is also accused of supplying the firearm used in the January 2025 killing of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland, one of several deaths authorities have linked to alleged members of the Zizians.

News Media reached out to an attorney who has previously represented Zajko in Maryland and the Delaware County Public Defender’s Office. Neither immediately responded to requests for comment.

Yellowstone Spin-off Unveils Future of Dutton Ranch

Emerging triumphantly onto the television scene, Dutton Ranch made a spectacular debut, and Paramount is eager to keep the momentum going.

This successful Yellowstone spin-off, featuring beloved characters portrayed by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, has been greenlit for a second season on Paramount+.

The renewal comes as the series approaches the finale of its inaugural season, with just two episodes remaining and the conclusion slated for July 3.

Dutton Ranch’s continuation was anticipated by many, as the return of Reilly and Hauser in their iconic roles of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, originally from the Kevin Costner-fronted series, promised to be a sure-fire hit with audiences.

From the outset, the show captivated viewers, achieving the most significant debut of an original series on Paramount+ by attracting 12.9 million viewers worldwide in its opening week.

‘Beth and Rip are among the most iconic duos in television history and we are thrilled to bring a whole new world to life with Dutton Ranch for our subscribers around the world,’ Jane Wiseman, head of originals for Paramount+, said in a statement.

‘We’re also incredibly grateful to our partners, including the teams at Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios, for bringing this new series to life with such grit, heart and authenticity.’

Matt Thunell, president of Paramount Television Studios added, ‘Dutton Ranch has resonated with audiences in a powerful way, building on the legacy of beloved characters, while establishing its own identity.

‘Thank you to our partners at Paramount+ and 101 Studios for a phenomenal first season. We look forward to bringing fans more stories from these unforgettable characters in season two.’

The show also secured the biggest series premiere on cable since 2023, with its two-episode launch airing on Paramount Network on May 15.

The first season runs for nine episodes, with the logline teasing high-stakes drama: ‘As Beth and Rip fight to build a future together – far from the ghosts of Montana – they collide with brutal new realities and a ruthless rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire. In South Texas, blood runs deeper, forgiveness is fleeting, and the cost of survival might just be your soul.

Reilly, 48, and Hauser, 51, first stepped into the roles of Beth and Rip in Yellowstone back in 2018.

Over time, Beth – the sharp-tongued daughter of the late John Dutton (Costner) – and Rip, the ranch’s fiercely loyal enforcer and fixer, have cemented themselves as one of TV’s most volatile, and enduring, couples.

Meanwhile, Annette Bening – who plays Beulah Jackson, a rival ranch owner to Beth (Reilly) and Rip (Hauser) – has revealed she hasn’t spoken to former co-star Kevin Costner about her new role in Yellowstone spin-off Dutton Ranch, despite him fronting the original series.

The 67-year-old Oscar nominee previously shared the screen with Costner in the 2003 Western Open Range.

Bening revealed she has yet to tell the Field of Dreams star about her new Sheridan-produced part.

‘I haven’t let him know,’ Bening admitted to People. ‘But we have stayed in touch over the years, and our paths have crossed many times.’

She added, ‘We made a Western in Southern Alberta in 2003. I’m very proud of that movie.’

Bening then reflected on how much Open Range meant to her late father.

‘My father just died a few years ago. Some of my movies, my father would not watch, but that one, he watched it over and over.’

‘I love that film. I’m very proud of it,’ she said. ‘And I got to work with Kevin and Robert DuVall, and it was a joy. My kids were with me. They were little. It was all amazing.’

Bening admits part of the reason she signed on to Dutton Ranch was her admiration for Reilly’s work on Yellowstone.

She teased the tangled relationship her character Beulah shares with Beth –  a woman she describes as ‘incredibly gutsy and intriguing.’

‘There’s a kind of mutual attraction and a mutual intrigue, let’s say, between these two women,’ Bening explained.

‘But that’s the fun of it. It’s just really a joy to have that dynamic going on.’

Bening also praised her star-studded cast, including Ed Harris, for bringing the spinoff to life.

Does Kevin Costner’s dramatic exit harm Yellowstone’s legacy or open the door for something better?

‘You’re really only as good as who you’re acting with,’ she said, adding that working with such talent is all about ‘listening… picking up on their energy’ and the thrill of seeing what might happen in each scene.

‘That’s the fun of it –  the exchange, the uncertainty, the surprises,’ she added.

But while Bening is settling into her new role, Costner’s departure from Yellowstone continues to make headlines.

Reports suggest his exit was far messier than fans ever knew, with one explosive on-set clash reportedly halting production temporarily.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, multiple insiders claimed tensions reached a breaking point when Costner allegedly ‘lunged’ at Wes Bentley during a heated dispute.

The father-of-seven is said to have lost his temper after Bentley refused to ‘ditch Taylor Sheridan’s script’ and do the scene ‘his way.’

One insider claimed Bentley ‘told Costner that he had signed up for a Taylor Sheridan show, not a Kevin Costner production.’

‘Kevin didn’t like that, and he lunged at him,’ a source present said. ‘No fists were thrown, but they were in each other’s faces, pushing and shoving and just getting hot until they had to be separated.’

'I haven't let him know,' Bening said of Costner to People on Friday, adding,'But we have stayed in touch over the years, and our paths have crossed many times;' Above, Costner in 2016

‘I haven’t let him know,’ Bening said of Costner to People on Friday, adding,’But we have stayed in touch over the years, and our paths have crossed many times;’ Above, Costner in 2016

The clash reportedly left Reilly in tears and forced production to briefly halt. Sources described the incident as ‘a tipping point on a set already cracking from creative power struggles and bruised egos.’

Insiders alleged the dispute was just another example of Costner being ‘impossible.’ ‘There’s a long list of people in Hollywood who swear they’ll never work with Costner again,’ the outlet claimed.

In December 2024, Luke Grimes admitted to Esquire that Costner’s absence from the second half of Season 5 actually made filming easier.

‘To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone that meant some of the conflict was gone,’ Grimes explained. ‘Not pointing any fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we’ve filmed.’

Other complaints over the years included Costner’s alleged habit of rewriting scripts without warning, clashing with co-stars, and difficulty following directions.

However, his former agent Rick Nicita, who represented him from 2002 to 2008, pushed back.

‘The word difficult gets used a lot,’ Nicita said. ‘It can mean someone who won’t come out of their trailer, or someone who doesn’t know their lines, or is rude. That’s not Kevin.’

Rumors of Costner leaving Yellowstone first surfaced in 2023, but his attorney Marty Singer denied claims he refused to film more than one week of Season 5 Part 2.

Sheridan9pictured) told The Hollywood Reporter he was ¿disappointed¿ by Costner¿s departure, saying it affected the show creatively.

Sheridan9pictured) told The Hollywood Reporter he was ‘disappointed’ by Costner’s departure, saying it affected the show creatively.

‘The idea that Kevin was only willing to work one week on the second half of Season 5 of Yellowstone is an absolute lie,’ Singer said. ‘It’s ridiculous – and anyone suggesting it shouldn’t be believed for one second.’

Filming conflicted with Costner’s plans to direct Horizon, the first in a planned four-part Western movie series.

In June 2024, Costner confirmed via Instagram that he would not appear at all in Season 5 Part 2.

Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter he was ‘disappointed’ by Costner’s departure, saying it affected the show creatively.

‘It truncates the closure of his character,’ he said. ‘It doesn’t alter it, but it truncates it.’

Sheridan insisted his opinion of Costner as an actor remains unchanged, calling his portrayal of John Dutton ‘symbolic and powerful.’

On the alleged tension, he added: ‘I’ve never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn’t work out on the phone. But once lawyers get involved, then people don’t get to talk to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and attempt to shift blame based on how the press or public seem to be reacting.’

He concluded: ‘He took a lot of this on the chin in terms of the saga playing out publicly, I don’t know that anyone deserves it.’

Pasco Community Pushes Back Against Proposed Employment Center on Farmland

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — On Wednesday evening, a significant community meeting took place to discuss a proposed rezoning ordinance that could transform 110 acres of farmland. The proposed development, facilitated by SN Hillside LLC, aims to establish an “employment center” in the area adjacent to Bowman Road and Milestone Drive, located at the boundary between Hernando and Pasco counties.

Bob Miller, owner of the neighboring Wright Ranch, expressed his concerns emphatically, saying, “They want the money. Then once they get it and they make their bucks, they’re going to say see you later. Have a nice day. It ain’t going to happen under our watch.”

The proposed change would shift the land’s designation from agricultural to commercial zoning. The development plans include constructing office spaces and possibly adding retail shops and housing, as outlined by a spokesperson for the developers.

Developers’ attorney, Clarke Hobby, highlighted the benefits, stating, “It would create an area with a lot of employment. People that could live on site and have some retail to take care of their needs.”

The meeting, held at the Elks Lodge in Brooksville near the prospective development site, saw a turnout of hundreds of concerned residents eager to learn more about the project.

“We will be loud until we are heard,” said another resident who spoke at the meeting.

Pasco County Commissioners did not take part in Wednesday’s meeting. The gathering was created to give residents a chance to speak with developers ahead of a planned first reading of the ordinance. No date has been set for that at this time.

Inside the Chilling Murder Spree of Sante and Kenny Kimes: Unraveling the Infamous Mother-Son Crime Duo

0

Sante Kimes imparted all her knowledge to her son Kenny Kimes—including the macabre skill of taking a life.

The infamous pair, notoriously referred to as “Mommy and Clyde,” crafted a chilling legacy over several decades. Their crime spree spanned countless cons and culminated in their eventual capture on the bustling streets of New York City following the murder of a wealthy socialite.

Private investigator Cici McNair vividly described Sante Kimes in Oxygen’s series Dateline: Secrets Uncovered as “the ultimate femme fatale,” a woman who effortlessly seduced not only lovers but also lawyers, husbands, and even her own son.

Who Was Sante Kimes?

Hailing from Oklahoma, Sante left a rocky childhood behind and turned her sights toward the allure of Hollywood. Throughout her life, she leaned heavily on her captivating charisma.

“She had a force,” recalled her eldest son, Kent Walker. “It was a force to be reckoned with.”

As a single mom, money was often tight and Sante, who Kent said bore a striking resemblance to Elizabeth Taylor, often turned to crime to support herself, shoplifting, stealing credit cards or writing bad checks. It wasn’t long before she enlisted Kent to help with her schemes.

“I was small, I fit through windows,” he explained. “I knew how to be a decoy. I knew how to make attention happen, so people looked at me instead of her while she did her thing. She was training me how to do that.”

Sante Kimes Marries Multi-Millionaire Kenneth Kimes

Then, in 1970, while working at the Palm Springs Millionaire Magazine, Sante met millionaire Kenneth Kimes, who had secured his large fortune through real estate, casinos and motel ownership.

After tying the knot in Mexico and welcoming son Kenny Jr. in 1975, it appeared that Sante’s money troubles were a thing of the past.

“Our lives was beyond the American dream, I mean, we lived in five different oceanfront properties in Hawaii,” Kent recalled. “We had an oceanfront estate in the Bahamas. We had a golf course home in Las Vegas.”

Yet, Sante’s criminal ways didn’t end. While Kenneth looked on in amusement—and even liked to join her on the criminal exploits—Sante continued to pull off one con after another, once even allegedly enlisting someone to burn her own house down to collect the insurance money.

However, there was one person looking to get out of the family business. At the urging of his girlfriend Rhonda Martin, Kent refused to help his mom steal anymore. Furious, Sante blamed Rhonda and told her parents she needed to stay away from Kent.

“A lieutenant from Hawaii Five-O showed up at my house,” Rhonda recalled. “That lieutenant told me, ‘Don’t stick your head up, because if you contact him, she’ll find you and she will kill you.’”

Terrified, Rhonda ended the relationship, leaving Kent to falsely believe she just didn’t love him anymore.

Kent joined the Army and moved out of the house.

Sante Kimes’ Financial Scheme Ends With Murder of David Kazdin

With her oldest son gone, Sante made Kenny Jr. her new partner in crime.

“I am my mother’s biggest disappointment,” Kent said. “I was the one who was supposed to be Kenny.”

Sante became even more unhinged, after Kenneth died in 1994. By then, the couple had used up most of Kenneth’s fortune, leaving Sante to scramble to find other ways to support herself as she relied more heavily on Kenny Jr.

In one misguided attempt to hide Kenneth’s assets before his death, they’d asked their friend and businessman David Kazdin to put his name on the deed to one of Kenneth’s properties in Las Vegas. Kazdin agreed, but later wanted out. Instead, Sante somehow managed to go to the bank and take out a $280,000 loan all in David’s name.

When he found out, he asked the bank to launch an investigation, but as it got underway the Las Vegas mansion burned down in a suspicious fire.

Then in the Spring of 1998, David’s body was discovered by a homeless man in a dumpster by the LAX airport.

Kenny would later describe the killing in court, telling Los Angeles jurors that it was Sante who wanted David dead and ordered her son to shoot their one-time friend, after arriving at his doorstep one day.

“Kenny walked in, and I think Mr. Kazdin offered him some coffee or something,” retired Los Angeles Detective Bill Cox explained. “And when Mr. Kazdin turned around in the kitchen, that’s when Kenny took the gun and shot him in the back of the head.”

After carrying out the murder, Kenny bought a $100 bouquet for his mom to celebrate.

It didn’t take long for investigators to hone in on Sante as a possible suspect, but by then, the mother and son duo were on the run. After getting to Utah, Sante traded in her Lincoln for a Lincoln Town Car, writing a check to cover the difference. By the time the check bounced, they were long gone.

“Every place we went, we would miss them just by days, sometimes a day, sometimes just hours,” Cox remembered. “They were constantly moving.”

Sante Kimes, Kenny Kimes Orchestrate Plan to Kill Irene Silverman

By July of 1998, Sante and Kenny had made their way to New York City, where wealthy widow Irene Silverman would tragically cross their path.

Using the alias Manny Guerrin, Kenny rented a room in a swanky east side townhouse from Irene, an 82-year-old former Radio City ballerina. Irene’s employees reported her missing on July 5‚ one day after she’d hosted a lavish Fourth of July party, triggering an investigation by the New York City Police.

The only tenant police weren’t able to track down was Manny, who had rented the property in cash two weeks earlier. Working with Irene’s employees, they were able to create a sketch of Manny. Detective Ed Murray, who worked in the NYPD’s Fugitive Task Force, immediately recognized the sketch as car thief Kenny Kimes.

Kenny was already in custody after Los Angeles detectives enlisted Stan Patterson—a man who had done odd jobs for Sante—and Murray to help them pull off a sting to arrest Sante and Kenny in the streets of New York.

At the time of their arrest, authorities had also discovered a large wad of cash and Irene’s passport in Sante’s purse, connecting the two investigations. Inside the stolen Lincoln, they also found wigs, a gun, an empty taser box and notebooks Sante kept with details about Irene’s life.

“From the notebooks, it was obvious Sante and Kenny targeted Irene for her wealth,” Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison explained, “and plotted to steal her identity and drain her fortune.”

After learning that Irene had owned the townhouse, Sante posed as Irene, enlisted a notary and obtained a deed for the property—later recovered from one of Sante’s bags—before carrying out the murder.

Then, as Kenny would later describe in court, they went into Irene’s bedroom, turned on the television and hit the elderly woman with a stun gun. After the mother and son got her into the bathtub, Kenny strangled her to death, loaded her body into the stolen Lincoln and dumped it in Hoboken, New Jersey, just before their arrest.

What Happened to Sante Kimes and Kenny Kimes?

Kenny also ultimately confessed to killing banker Syed Bilal Ahmed with his mother in the Bahamas by lacing the man’s drink and then drowning him in the bathtub. Syed had been investigating irregularities in Kenneth’s banking accounts at the time he was killed.

Though both would maintain their innocence for their trial in New York, they were found guilty of 118 charges, including second-degree murder. While Kenny was sentenced to 125 years behind bars, his mom was sentenced to 120 years.

It wasn’t the end of their legal troubles, however. The two were later extradited back to Los Angeles to face trial for David’s murder. This time, they were facing the death penalty, however, Kenny agreed to plead guilty and testify against his mother in 2004 in exchange for prosecutors dropping the option of capital punishment for him and his mother. Sante was once again convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

She died behind bars in 2014 at the age of 79.

What Does Kenny Kimes Say About His Crimes Today?

Kenny continues to serve out his sentence at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.

In a call from prison, Kenny told Morrison that he was sorry for his actions.

“The first thing I want to say is that I absolutely regret my past,” he said, “and the ignorance of my past crimes makes me want to do better.”

He admitted there was “a lot of chaos” in his childhood and “only saw one road forward,” leading him to partner up with his mother.

“I didn’t have a support system,” he explained. “I didn’t have an escape valve.”

Still, he professed affection for Sante, saying he chose not to focus on the “negative elements” of his parents.

“I love my parents,” he told Morrison, “but there’s a lot of complexity there.”
