Marc Elias Claims Five Straight Victories Against DOJ in Voter Roll Battles

In a recent decision, a federal judge thwarted the Department of Justice’s attempt to access Rhode Island’s full voter rolls, including unredacted details. The judge ruled on Friday that any future efforts from the department would also be unsuccessful.

U.S. District Judge Mary S. McElroy issued a detailed 14-page opinion criticizing the DOJ’s intentions to acquire sensitive information such as driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers. She highlighted the lack of a substantial factual basis for their request.

Appointed by President Trump in 2019, Judge McElroy noted that an amended request – which the DOJ called a “curing elaboration letter” – sent to Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore would fail to address the core issues at play.

Even if this new letter laid out a factual basis for the request, McElroy asserted that it would “still fail to state a claim” as it lacks a “legally sufficient purpose,” in accordance with the stipulations outlined in Title III of the Civil Rights Act.

The judge remarked, “While the United States implies that Title III permits unfounded ‘fishing expeditions,’ such an interpretation would render Title III redundant and circular, which could not have been Congress’s intent.”

The DOJ’s Title III demands have spanned the entire country but succeeded mainly in red states, leading it to sue more than two dozen blue or purple states to force compliance.

The most aggressive move came in January, when the FBI executed a search warrant in Fulton County, Georgia, and seized 2020 election ballots, tabulators, and voter rolls.

The raid happened while the government was suing the clerk for the records, in the very county where, in the days before Jan. 6, Trump pressured the state’s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780” votes.

The county has demanded the return of 656 boxes “containing the original versions of 2020 election-related materials,” challenged the validity of the warrant, and so far unsuccessfully sought internal FBI documents about the raid — even as it claims it’s at the “epicenter” of Trump’s plot to “take over the voting.”

However, the project championed by former Attorney General Pam Bondi and carried out by DOJ Civil Rights Division Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon has spiraled into a four-game losing streak.

On Friday, McElroy extended that streak to five.

“While the present Motions were pending, four other federal district courts issued decisions on nearly identical cases brought by the United States seeking unredacted voter registration information from California, Oregon, Michigan, and Massachusetts,” the judge observed. “All four courts dismissed the United States’ lawsuits.”

“Absent from the demand are any factual allegations suggesting that Rhode Island may be violating the list maintenance requirements of the NVRA and HAVA, let alone the CRA. This alone would be enough to foreclose judicial enforcement of the demand,” she concluded.

The ruling was a delight to Democratic Party election lawyer Marc Elias.

“DOJ demanded voter files from all 50 states. DOJ sued 31 states for refusing their demand. My law firm intervened to protect voters in those cases,” he said. “DOJ is now 0-5. My firm is 5-0. Lesson: When we fight we win.”

Dhillon, seen by a segment of MAGA as a candidate to replace Bondi, posted a link Thursday to a Wall Street Journal opinion piece that billed her as “Trump’s Civil-Rights Enforcer in Action.”

“It’s always nice when the boss notices your work! It’s the honor of my career to serve in this administration for the best President of my lifetime! @CivilRights,” Dhillon said, sharing a screenshot of a Trump Truth Social post.

It didn’t take long for Elias to respond.

“We share something in common: I am proud that he has noticed my work in defeating him and his cronies in court over and over again,” he answered. “I wear Trump’s scorn as a badge of honor.”

Why Josh Hart Believes Cam Schlittler is the Must-Watch AL Cy Young Contender

0

NBA champion and Knicks guard Josh Hart has wholeheartedly jumped aboard the Cam Schlittler excitement.

Following an impressive performance by the Yankees right-hander on Friday night, Hart took to social media to advocate for Schlittler as a contender for the most coveted pitching award in baseball.

“Schlitty is the Cy Young winner hands down,” Hart declared on X.

Hart’s endorsement coincided with Schlittler’s remarkable outing, where he struck out a career-high 13 batters over six scoreless innings, leading the Yankees to a 5-0 victory over the Reds.

Schlittler’s rise as one of baseball’s standout breakout talents continues, building on the promise Yankees fans glimpsed last season.

The 25-year-old right-hander has developed into one of the best young pitchers in baseball.

He arrived for his June 19 start with a league-best WAR at 3.8, as well as an American League-best ERA at 1.82, which dropped to 1.71 following his latest effort.

In his first 16 starts this season, he has 109 strikeouts across 95 innings pitched.

Hart’s endorsement comes during what has been a memorable week for the Knicks star.

After helping deliver New York its first NBA championship since 1973, Hart on Thursday participated in a massive ticker-tape parade through Manhattan that drew millions of fans.

The Knicks’ celebration culminated with players receiving the keys to the city from Mayor Zohran Mamdani following a historic postseason run.

Hart was a key contributor throughout the championship season and really has been his entire Knicks tenure since arriving in New York via trade during the 2022-23 season.

Known for his rebounding, tenacity and two-way versatility, the veteran wing averaged 10.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game in the playoffs.

His all-around play helped New York complete a dominant playoff run that ended with a Finals victory over San Antonio.

The celebration tour continued this week when Hart and Finals MVP Jalen Brunson threw out ceremonial first pitches at Yankee Stadium before a game against the White Sox.

To no surprise, the showing was met with raucous ovation from Yankees fans, many of whom have likely also been celebrating the Knicks’ championship team.

The Yankees, as they chase their 28th World Series title, sit at 46-28 and three games up in the AL East.

Tragic Dominican Resort Blaze Claims Life and Displaces Nearly 1,700 Guests

0

A devastating blaze ravaged a seaside resort in the Dominican Republic on Friday, claiming the life of a woman and necessitating the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests and employees.

The relentless fire erupted at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel, casting thick, dark clouds of smoke across the scenic Caribbean shores.

Footage captured voracious flames and billowing smoke engulfing the thatched roofs and hotel amenities.

The casualty has been identified as 46-year-old Italian citizen Francesca Valentino.

According to the Dominican Republic’s pre-hospital emergency services, three individuals were hospitalized in Bayahibe while six others received treatment onsite.

Initial reports indicate that the fire ignited due to “roof structures made of palm” and unfavorable weather conditions, according to authorities.

“Preliminary observations indicate that the fire spread rapidly due to the flammable nature of parts of the roof structures made of palm, as well as wind conditions,” the Dominican Emergency Operations Center (COE) said.

“Tourist activities in Bayahibe and the surrounding area remain unaffected and continue to take place safely and as normal,” COE added.

The Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace, part of the same chain, did not sustain any damage.

Bayahibe is a popular destination for U.S. and international tourists on the Dominican Republic’s southeastern coast.

Wyndham Hotels did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Royal Family Reunites: Harry and Meghan Plan UK Visit with Archie and Lilibet

0

The days of charming, gappy-toothed birthday photographs, where Prince George would proudly pose in his shorts for his mother’s camera, are making way for a new chapter. Now 13, Prince George is set to leave home and continue the family tradition by attending Eton, following in the footsteps of his father.

As he prepares to start boarding at the prestigious school, which costs £63,000 a year, this September marks a significant milestone. It’s also a poignant reminder of the swift passage of time and how quickly William and Kate’s children are maturing.

At last week’s Trooping the Colour, Princess Charlotte, now 11, appeared completely at ease with the gathered crowds. Even Prince Louis, who is eight, showed a more composed side, moving away from his usual playful antics.

Meanwhile, over in Montecito, their cousins are also growing up quickly. Meghan’s Instagram provides glimpses into their lives, revealing seven-year-old Archie as an athletic daddy’s boy, while five-year-old Lilibet’s personality shines through, notably in a stylish Beyoncé T-shirt she was spotted wearing just last week.

However, it’s been four years since William and Harry’s children have been in the same country together. The last occasion was in June 2022, when Californian-born Lilibet was just turning one year old.

On that occasion, the Sussexes had come for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, but sources say it’s thought very unlikely that the young Cambridges met Lili.

Indeed, William and Kate have reportedly only met Archie, their nephew a handful of times.

King Charles, meanwhile, met Lili on just that one occasion in 2022.

Since then, there have been no grandfatherly cuddles for Harry’s children.

As we saw at last week¿s Trooping the Colour, the Wales children are growing fast. Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight, all appeared at Buckingham Palace

The last time that Harry’s children – Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five – were even in the same country as their cousins was four years ago, in June 2022.

It’s hard to underestimate the familial significance of this week’s claim – dropped, out of the blue – that when Harry travels to the UK next month to promote his Invictus Games, he will be joined by his wife and their children.

The first and most obvious question, surely, is: will Harry and his family be granted any time with the King?

One imagines this will be top of Harry’s list, since it is nine months since he last saw his father, whose ‘precautionary’ cancer treatment remains ongoing.

All the signals from the Sussex camp are that this trip is a grand opportunity for a reconciliation – a chance to begin to heal the wounds of ‘Megxit’, when the couple stepped back from their roles as senior members of the Royal Family and left Britain in a bid to become financially independent.

As apparently briefed by the Sussex’s publicity team – comprised of former journalist Liam Maguire in the UK and the LA-based Sunshine Sachs PR agency – to an Australian news website, Harry has indicated he hopes to re-introduce his children to their grandfather, which would be a monumental development in family relations.

Harry has apparently also ‘been assured’ there will be sufficient security for his family for his visit.

The source close to Harry said: ‘It’s been a real point of great sadness – for Harry especially – that he’s been unable to bring his wife and kids back to the UK safely to reconnect with friends and family, but anyone would understand his desire to put their safety first.

‘He would love to introduce the children to his wider family, to show them the UK, where he grew up – his homeland. That would be a natural thing for any parent.’

Other outlets were given a briefing supposedly from ‘an LA-based business associate’ of the Prince, which ran: ‘Harry says he’s coming back before the end of the year with the children with the express intent to reunite with his dad. The way in which he said it seems to make it clear that he believes that this is happening and will pave the way for a longer-term peaceful relationship between them.

‘He has wanted to have his kids meet their grandfather, especially after their summit in London last year. While there have been deep-seated trust issues around Harry, there is a sense now that all parties want peace.’

For all these emollient words, in royal circles the visit has been interpreted differently. Insiders are aghast at the prospect.

After losing his court battle for state-funded security in 2025, which enraged Harry, the Government¿s royal executive committee, then agreed to reassess his risk level

After losing his court battle for state-funded security in 2025, which enraged Harry, the Government’s royal executive committee, then agreed to reassess his risk level

Although framed in heart-warming terms of a son wanting to make up with his beloved ‘Pa’ – and there’s certainly much to make up for, after those attacks in his memoir, Spare, as well as in endless interviews – Harry bringing his children to the UK has been interpreted as a ‘manipulative’ gambit and an act of ‘emotional blackmail’ against the King.

Strong words – but they are also echoed in California where two sources close to the Sussexes were equally stunned by this week’s announcement, calling it ‘a new low’.

This, they say, is nothing short of a gauntlet thrown down by Harry and Meghan.

A source said: ‘I don’t think this will be a reunion. It’s more of a trap. It’s a challenge.

‘They are saying: “Try and ignore us when we are here with the kids.” ‘If they don’t meet up [with Harry and Meghan], then they can say: “We came to you and we were ignored.”’

The stakes aren’t just to do with inter-familial relations, though. The tense matter of who funds the Prince’s security is also very much on the table.

After losing his court battle for state-funded security in May 2025 – something which enraged Harry – Ravec, the Government’s royal and VIP executive committee, then agreed to Harry’s private request to reassess his risk level. They are currently undertaking a full assessment before making a final decision.

The source reflected on this, saying: ‘It’s clear to me that Harry and Meghan are doing this to force their hand, so they have to give him security or else they are endangering the children.

‘This is a huge new low as a tactic – and it is going to backfire.’

It all means the stakes for Harry personally and financially (it has been estimated he now personally spends around $3million a year on his family’s security) on this visit to the UK couldn’t be higher.

Yet there’s one gaping hole in the ‘reconciliation’ narrative as billed by the Prince’s side: nobody is aware of a meeting with the King in the diary, not for Harry, nor his wife or children.

The King does not, despite reports to the contrary, share details of his diary with the Sussexes so they have no idea of his commitments in July. They simply don’t know how busy he is, or where he will be.

‘He might suddenly find he’s very busy then,’ said a source.

It also remains to be seen whether other members of the family will meet Harry and his clan. Will Princess Eugenie, to whom Harry is close, reach out so they can share their travails? A source in royal circles said the Palace reaction to news of the visit was a weary one: ‘Will they ever learn?’

They added: ‘They do not want to get involved with saying anything when it comes to the couple as they have a red line.

Some have observed that King Charles ¿ who last saw his son Harry for just under an hour in September 2025 ¿ is a Christian man who will always to choose forgiveness

Some have observed that King Charles – who last saw his son Harry for just under an hour in September 2025 – is a Christian man who will always to choose forgiveness

‘If they start briefing it goes in a bad direction. They won’t do it and they won’t be seen to do it because they don’t want a war of words.

‘But the feeling in royal circles is that this is manipulative. It seems like no coincidence this comes when they are expecting a decision from the Home Office on security. They are genuinely bewildered that anyone would think that this is the way to proceed if you want to repair relations. This feels like emotional blackmail.’

Indeed, a source said that the King – who last saw his son for just under an hour in September 2025 – is a Christian man who will always choose forgiveness and reconciliation. Yet he remains wary as he feels he cannot be seen to pre-empt or countermand a Home Office decision. They said: ‘The King is not an uncaring man. It’s not that he doesn’t want to see his grandchildren. But he doesn’t want to do anything which can be weaponised against him in the security row. Everyone is very wary.’ However, those fears of ‘weaponisation’ are surely all the stronger because of the many barbs aimed at the Windsors from Montecito.

Put simply: forget security –surely Harry has stayed away from his family because he’s not been welcome?

A source said: ‘The feeling is that the question of Harry and a meeting overshadows all the King’s work. In terms of the meeting, you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

‘The narrative becomes about the personal family dynamics and that is what they don’t want.

‘He made a rod for his own back meeting him the last time; the King felt bounced into it.’

Little wonder, perhaps, that some are viewing the addition of Archie and Lili to the travelling party as the ultimate ‘bounce’. The source close to the Sussexes was particularly scathing about their intentions in this domain: ‘Recently we are seeing more and more content of the kids as Harry and Meghan become less and less relevant.’

The Sussexes are thought to arrive in the UK on July 6, and will stay for about two weeks, also taking in events for some of Harry's charities. (Pictured at the Invictus Games in 2025)

Certainly, we have been awarded more regular glimpses of Archie and Lili through Meghan’s social media accounts – artful pictures from behind, or with Lili’s long hair covering her face.

However, extraordinarily, there are now indications that the uber-protective Harry is planning to bring the children to ‘public-facing events’ when they visit the UK – such as the launch on July 10 of the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games, which takes place in Birmingham in 2027.

Having fiercely protected their identities from birth, it’s claimed by some in the Sussex camp that Harry is planning to launch Archie and Lili into his world of ‘service’ when they are here – rather like William’s three were seen at Trooping the Colour last week.

That’s a prospect which makes his enemies shudder. Such a move would surely provoke global attention and possibly mark a high-water mark of influence.

One source says: ‘Nobody understands how this can happen given Harry’s feelings about having been used as a child in the service of the monarchy.

‘But it looks like July could be the big reveal of [Archie and Lili’s] faces.’

The family are making no flying visit, either. The Sussexes are thought to be arriving in the UK on July 6 and will stay for about two weeks, also taking in events for other charities with which Harry has links, such as Scotty’s Little Soldiers and WellChild.

The publicity around Archie and Lili’s presence would be both stratospheric and sustained.

It’s quite a turnaround from the BBC interview Harry did last year, after he lost his court battle for security, in which he said: ‘I can’t see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point.’

'What do the Sussexes hope the visit will achieve? An attempt at family unity? A high stakes attempt to undo the shackles of Megxit?' ask our reporters

‘What do the Sussexes hope the visit will achieve? An attempt at family unity? A high stakes attempt to undo the shackles of Megxit?’ ask our reporters

He also claimed he could ‘only come to the UK safely’ if invited by the King, as he would then be included within royal protection.

And yet here the four of them are, England-bound.

The Daily Mail understands that as has previously been the case, Harry and his family have been offered accommodation on the royal estate for use during a potential visit. He has previously been offered accommodation at Buckingham Palace but turned it down claiming it wasn’t secure enough. It is not clear whether any other residence will be offered.

No response has yet been received by the palace to the offer of accommodation.

The Home Office will not comment on the Prince’s security but the understanding is that nothing has changed – yet.

A source in royal circles said: ‘They are expecting a decision on security soon. The situation with it has not changed.

‘He seems to just be trying to put a good spin on it, but as it stands he will get a bespoke security package based on need.

‘That was always the case [since he stepped away from being a working royal in 2020].

‘The whole issue before was him saying that the bespoke offering is not good enough.’

After the downgrading of their Netflix deal and a fall in visitors to Meghan’s website, another source described the development of the UK visit in more blunt terms: ‘Forcing their hand on security is another step to get back in the fold because they are broke.’

So what do they hope the visit will achieve? An attempt at family unity? A strategic operation over security arrangements? A high-stakes attempt to undo the shackles of Megxit?

Or some hellish combination of all three?

Local Community Honors the Life and Service of Army Veteran Brandon Clark

AUGUSTA, Ga ()- The community is flooded with tributes for Brandon Clark, whose body was discovered last week on 12th Street in downtown Augusta. His unexpected passing has left a significant impact on those who knew him.

Clark, aged 40 and an Army veteran, frequently visited Thrive, a downtown Augusta organization dedicated to assisting individuals experiencing homelessness.

In conversations with NewsChannel 6, acquaintances of Clark described him as an exceptional individual.

“He was quiet. But yeah, like again, he carried an energy and a presence that you just can’t deny,” shared Anna Bradsher, a dedicated volunteer at Thrive.

“Brandon Michael Clark was a person. He was a person that was very loving, very kind, very, very giving,” added Minister Napoleon Houser, Founder and Director at Thrive.

Clark was only partially verbal, possibly stemming from brain injuries sustained during his time in the military. The people who knew him believe he had PTSD and other mental health issues as well. Bradsher told us there was more to Clark than met the eye.

“I’ve shared publicly already that I was a little bit afraid of him when I first met him. I didn’t really know him. I could see that there were some things going on for him emotionally and mentally. And so but once I got to know him, I was like, ‘Wow, he’s actually really kind and really sweet.’ And his presence was so affirming,” she explained.

Clark enjoyed attending church services and was a basketball star at the Academy of Richmond County. Bradsher shared one of her favorite memories of Clark.

“He kind of did this little like, peacock thing, where he would like walk around like this. So I was like I was like, ‘Hey, Brandon.’ And then it literally turned into a dance battle where there was, like, all everybody all around us,” she laughed. “People were, like, clapping and cheering. And I just–I just had fun with him.”

Houser told NewsChannel 6 he can’t remember a time Clark wasn’t there.

“I was in here speaking as though there was a full room. And all of a sudden, a neighbor across the street came in. And from that initial neighbor coming in, Brandon was probably I’m going to say number two. When he came in, he set down for Bible study and he never left.”

Houser said he cherished the time he got to spend with Clark and adds that he meant a lot to his community.

“He gave of himself. He volunteered here. Right? He swept floors. He mopped. He, I mean, he did all those things. And so his impact was immense,” he said.

Thrive hosting a memorial for Brandon Clark Friday night from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m at 1439 12th Street in Downtown Augusta.

Clark’s cause of death has not yet been determined and Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said he doesn’t have a time frame for when autopsy results will come back.

Charleston Athletes Lead Storm Damage Cleanup Efforts to Restore Community

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — In the wake of an EF1 tornado touching down in Coles County, the local community, led by the Trojans, rallied together to aid recovery efforts in their beloved hometown.

The morning after the storm, Brian Deadmond, the athletic director, and head football coach Brian Halsey spearheaded initiatives to organize cleanup operations. Their determination inspired a wave of support, as more teams and school administrators joined the effort throughout the week to assist their neighbors.

“This is a significant moment for us to unite,” Deadmond shared. Like his colleagues, he was actively involved in the cleanup, employing his chainsaw to cut down trees that had fallen on several properties.

Deadmond acknowledged the presence of the football team alongside the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, who participated in the community efforts scattered across town. He believes these actions carry as much educational value as the lessons taught in a sports setting.

“It’s crucial for our kids to witness this,” he emphasized. “It’s vital for them to see the importance of responding when places and people are in need. We’re cultivating essential character traits like helping others and lending a hand.”

As of Friday evening, members of Trojan Athletics have removed debris from more than a dozen homes.

Brooklyn Standoff Ends with Officer Shot and Gunman Dead, Police Report

A member of the New York City Police Department’s Emergency Service Unit (ESU), with 15 years of service, was injured on Friday morning when an armed standoff in Brooklyn ended with him being shot in the leg, according to officials.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that the situation began around 5:45 a.m. when officers from the 79th precinct arrived at a two-story residence in Bedford-Stuyvesant after receiving a 911 call regarding multiple gunshots fired inside the building.

The suspect, identified by authorities as 48-year-old Lamin Simmons, allegedly discharged approximately 20 shots during the prolonged standoff, as noted by Commissioner Tisch.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch

Commissioner Tisch stated that after the officers returned fire, the gunman succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. (WNYW)

Footage from a drone purportedly showed Simmons brandishing a firearm. Around 8:30 a.m., he began tossing hefty objects, including a microwave, a lamp, and various kitchenware, out of a window toward officers positioned below in the backyard.

While Simmons’ wife and son safely escaped the house and told police about his history of mental illness, an elderly couple remained trapped on the floor above, Tisch said.

Police determined the incident initially stemmed from a dispute involving the couple.

At 8:52 a.m., ESU officers entered the home and encountered Simmons at the top of the stairs, Tisch said. He allegedly ignored multiple direct police orders to drop his gun and opened fire on the officers, striking detective Matthew Gale in the left leg.

At least four officers returned fire, striking Simmons, who was later taken to Woodhull Hospital and pronounced dead, police said.

Investigators recovered two weapons at the scene: a Jimenez Arms .380 caliber handgun and a Beretta handgun equipped with an extended magazine, Tisch said.

Simmons did not have prior documented history with the NYPD.

Gale suffered a tibial fracture but remains in stable condition and in “good spirits” at Kings County Hospital, where he is expected to survive, according to authorities.

Tisch praised the wounded detective and the ESU for consistently handling the city’s most volatile assignments, saying they “met that danger with uncommon valor.”

“What happened this morning is a reminder that the men and women of the NYPD routinely place themselves between danger and the people that they serve. They enter situations that are uncertain and volatile and often life-threatening,” Tisch said. “This morning, detective Gale put his life on the line doing exactly that.”

“We like to say that when the public needs help, they call the police, and when the police need help, they call ESU,” she continued. “Today, once again, they met that danger with uncommon valor.”

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited the hospital to thank the medical staff and commend Gale’s bravery, noting, “He put on his uniform, he left his house, he said goodbye to his family, and he went to his job to keep our city safe.”

“When New Yorkers call 911, they expect someone to show up,” Mamdani said. “What this officer, and so many others, [did] today was exactly that. I want to thank the first responders and the officers who acted so swiftly in the aftermath of this shooting, and I know that all New Yorkers will join me in wishing detective Gale a full and speedy recovery.”

Tragic Loss: Pomona Family Speaks Out After Double Homicide Shatters Their Lives

0

A family in Southern California is grappling with heartbreak after their cherished daughter and sister was tragically shot and killed in a Pomona apartment complex. The family discovered the horrifying news while watching a live police pursuit on television.

Veronica Lopez, aged 24, became a victim of a fatal shooting on Thursday afternoon, in what authorities are describing as a double homicide. It is alleged her boyfriend committed the crime before fleeing, prompting a dramatic multi-agency chase along the freeway that concluded with his apprehension.

Her devastated family is now left with questions and a desperate need for answers.

“Why? Why did he kill my baby? Why did he kill her?” lamented her mother, Sheila Lopez, during an interview with ABC7.

Police officers were dispatched shortly before 3:30 p.m. following reports of gunshots near Monterey and Garey avenues in Pomona. Upon arrival, they discovered both a man and a woman deceased from gunshot wounds inside an apartment at the complex.

Authorities have not publicly identified the second victim.

Family members identified the woman as Veronica Lopez, saying she lived in San Diego and had been dating suspect Robert Galtman for about two years despite repeated concerns from relatives about the relationship.

Loved ones described Lopez as a bright, talented young woman whose future was stolen in an instant.

“She was our fifth daughter. Very beautiful, very young, very talented,” her father Coby Lopez told CBS. “She used to be a pro skater, had so much positives going in her life. I don’t know what kind of problems she was going through, but we tried to help her. … So young, taken out by a coward.”

Her sister Klarissa Lopez said the family realized something was wrong while watching live television coverage of the police chase.

“We were watching the chase after it was live and my mom noticed the car and the dog that they rescued. We called Pomona police and they confirmed it with fingerprints that it was my sister Veronica,” She told ABC. “Veronica was a wonderful, wonderful daughter, very vibrant, happy and a go getter.”

Outside the apartment complex where the violence unfolded, family members gathered around a growing memorial of candles and balloons, mourning a daughter, sister and friend they say was loved by everyone who knew her.

After the shooting, investigators say Galtman fled in a black Kia sedan, prompting a countywide manhunt.

Authorities later tracked the vehicle using an automatic license plate reader that detected it on the northbound 5 Freeway in Sylmar. The pursuit stretched for roughly 90 minutes before officers used a PIT maneuver to bring the chase to an end.

Galtman was taken into custody and is being held on $3.1 million bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Pomona.

As they prepare for funeral services, Lopez’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover expenses and honor her memory.

In a tribute shared after her death, relatives summed up their grief in six heartbreaking words:

“Forever 24. Forever loved. Forever missed.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Renowned for crafting moments of humor across numerous beloved TV shows, James Burrows, who directed over a thousand episodes of iconic comedies like “Cheers,” “Taxi,” “Friends,” and “Will and Grace,” passed away on Friday at the age of 85.

The news of his passing was shared by his family in a release to People, stating that he died “peacefully today, surrounded by his family.” However, they did not disclose the location or the cause of death.

Though his face was rarely recognized, and his name flew by in the credits, Burrows was a significant force behind the camera throughout his career, primarily focusing on directing situation comedies that entertained millions.

Burrows embarked on his television journey at 35 in 1974, when he began directing episodes of well-known shows like “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” and “Laverne & Shirley.”

He was a co-creator of “Cheers,” directing the bulk of its 273 episodes, numbering 243, and helmed every single one of the 246 episodes of “Will and Grace.”

He also helmed multiple episodes of such hits as “Frasier,” “Friends” and “Mike & Molly,” and the pilots of “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory.”

Sweet spot of script, performance and chemistry

“When I direct a television show, I try to reach that sweet spot where the best script meets the best performance and the best chemistry between performers,” Burrows wrote in his 2022 memoir “Directed by James Burrows.” “Hitting that exact moment, where these factors land in combination, results in the sweetest and most enduring laugh.”

His family said, “Burrows understood that great comedy was never simply about laughter. It was about humanity, connection, and truth. That understanding became the foundation of a career that forever changed television.

“But beyond his remarkable achievements, Burrows will be remembered for something even greater: his kindness, generosity, and unwavering belief in the people around him. He possessed a rare ability to make everyone better and was known for remembering every person he met by name, making colleagues at every level feel seen, valued, and appreciated,” the family statement said.

The majority of Burrows’ shows aired on NBC, whose “Must See TV” slogan promoted its Thursday night lineup in the early 1990s that included “Friends” and “Frasier.”

“Jimmy Burrows was the man behind the curtain. He knew how to make us laugh, what buttons to push and was the absolute master of getting the most out of every joke,” NBC said in a statement. “His loss to the television comedy world is immeasurable. Every time you have a smile on your face watching ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show,’ ’Taxi, ‘Cheers,’ ‘Will & Grace,’ ‘Friends’ and countless others, think of Jimmy and know he made all our lives funnier.”

Following in his father’s path

Born James Edward Burrows on Dec. 30, 1940, in Los Angeles, he moved to New York when he was 5 years old. He spent five years in the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus until his voice started to change. He attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Art.

His father was writer, director and producer Abe Burrows, whose Broadway hits included “Guys and Dolls” and “Can-Can.” The elder Burrows also mentored Larry Gelbart, future creator and producer of the TV show “M(asterisk)A(asterisk)S(asterisk)H.”

The younger Burrows spent hours of his youth in theaters and studios watching his father work, dining with him at such famed New York haunts as Sardi’s and Gallagher’s and meeting celebrities who attended his father’s New Year’s Eve parties.

After earning a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College, Burrows attended the graduate program of the Yale School of Drama, where his classmates included actor-comedian Robert Klein, playwright John Guare and film director John Badham.

At Yale, he was required to take directing classes and he got hooked.

Burrows’ first sitcom experience was as Burl Ives’ dialogue coach on “O.K. Crackerby!” which was directed by his father and ran for one season on ABC in 1965.

From there, he was an assistant on “The Patty Duke Show.” He moved back to New York and worked for Broadway producers Lee Guber, Frank Ford and Shelly Gross. He first met actor Moore while working on the Broadway production of “Holly Golightly,” an adaptation of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” that was directed by his father.

Burrows eventually worked as a stage manager for various road productions, where he met such actors as Hugh O’Brien, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Julie Harris.

Catching a break with Mary Tyler Moore

By 1974, after working in dinner theater and summer stock, he turned on his television and saw Moore’s eponymous TV show. He wrote her a letter asking if there was any opening “small or smaller” at her production company that he could fill, according to his memoir.

Moore’s husband and business partner, Grant Tinker, invited Burrows to Los Angeles to direct an episode of the comedy. He apprenticed for MTM Enterprises, which had four sitcoms on the air at the same time.

Burrows cited his theater background for learning how to give actors direction and block out scenes. He’s credited for being one of the first sitcom directors to increase the typical multicamera television shoot from three to four cameras.

The common thread between Burrows’ shows were the bonds between friends and unrelated families, whether it was the motley crew of regulars meeting at the bar in “Cheers” or the drivers working toward a better life in “Taxi” or the 20-somethings sharing the same apartment building in “Friends.”

“The best sitcoms transcend the screen and reach out and grab the audience by the throat and by the heart,” Burrows wrote in his memoir.

Actors Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman worked with Burrows over 16 seasons between “Taxi” and “Cheers.”

“He was the very best at his craft. His positive spirit, boundless energy, and tireless work defined what it takes to run a show and keep people laughing,” they said in a statement. “He will always be in our hearts.”

Burrows relished discovering new acting talent while directing more than 75 pilots that were picked up as series.

“Having directed over a thousand shows means that almost any night you can turn on your television or go online and find a show that I directed. I’m very proud of that,” he wrote in his memoir.

In 2019, Burrows was an executive producer on live productions of “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” with famous actors re-creating episodes of those 1970s comedies.

“Jimmy was the greatest comedic television director in the history of the medium,” his agent Rick Rosen said in a statement. “He directed the most iconic, defining shows of generations. Always a gentleman, it was an absolute honor to represent him.”

Burrows was married in 1997 to Debbie Easton, whom he met when she worked as a hairstylist on “Frasier.” Daughters Kat Schatzow, Ellie Gluck and Maggie Burrows, who followed her father into directing, are from his first marriage to Linda Solomon, who died in 2004. His stepdaughter Paris is from his wife’s previous marriage. He has a sister, Laurie Burrows Grad, and seven grandchildren.
