Heartbreaking Incident: Child’s Shocking Encounter with Crocodiles Leaves Onlookers in Tears

0

Witnesses were left in tears as they recounted the harrowing moment when a three-year-old boy was hurled into a crocodile enclosure at a zoo in Britain. In a brave act of rescue, the owner’s wife, Tracey Johnson, jumped in to save the child.

After being pulled to safety, the young boy was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition. He sustained serious injuries, including a broken arm and pelvis, during the frightening ordeal that took place in Cambridgeshire.

A 30-year-old man from Norfolk has been taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder. It is believed that the man, who is reportedly a stranger to the child, was accompanied by a caregiver and is described in some reports as having a mental disability.

The incident unfolded when the little boy, who had been observing the reptiles, was suddenly thrown about 15 feet from an elevated viewing platform into the crocodile pit at the Johnsons of Old Hurst tropical house near Huntingdon.

The boy had been looking at the reptiles when he was thrown around 15ft from an elevated viewing platform down into the Johnsons of Old Hurst tropical house near Huntingdon.

One expert believes he probably landed on a concrete surface and then rolled into the water.

The enclosure contains at least 15 crocodiles and alligators, including two of the largest – Nile crocodiles called Romeo and Cuddles. Both are believed to measure between 9ft and 11ft, with Romeo, the male, weighing up to 485lbs.

It is not yet known whether the boy sustained all his injuries from the fall or if he was also attacked by one of the animals – but an expert has confirmed that if the child fell next to a crocodile he will have been bitten.

Chris Newman, 67, director of the National Centre for Reptile Welfare who has housed crocodiles at the zoo and spent time inside the enclosure, said: ‘If a child landed next to a crocodile, I absolutely would expect that animal to react and snap.

‘The crocodiles are incredibly well fed, so I wouldn’t expect them to eat a child, but it would bite a child if it landed on it or by it. That’s where the trouble would come – they have such a powerful bite. Even an investigatory bite would be catastrophic.

‘But my suspicion is that the injuries were caused by the child falling 15ft on to concrete and sort of rolled into the water.’ He added: ‘You couldn’t fall or be pushed into it – you would have to be thrown.’

Chris spoke about owner Tracey Johnson, who reportedly jumped into the enclosure to help rescue the boy.

He said: ‘Knowing Tracey, it comes as no surprise that she acted this way – that’s exactly what she would do. She’s a very courageous and brave lady. She has been incredibly heroic. It’s nothing more than I would expect from her.

‘She’s a very strong lady. I know it would have been incredibly difficult. It’s about a fifteen foot drop, so to get in there that quickly and save the child is an incredible act of bravery.

Mr Newman said the attraction is a family-run operation involving ‘a mum and dad, two sons and a daughter-in-law’.

He said the enclosure was so secure that a child could only have ended up inside if they had been deliberately thrown.

He said: ‘It’s a large tropical house with a raised walkway which is about 15ft down.

‘The crocodiles would be on the ground floor and there’s a walkway all the way around the perimeter, with vertical and horizontal safety barriers.’

He also described the venue as ‘a fantastic zoo’ where ‘public safety is a huge part’ of the operation.

Reptile expert Chris Newman said he believed the enclosure was surrounded by a 15ft high walkway which she would have to descended from to rescue the child.

This morning a resident close to the zoo said: ‘Tracey and the other staff were incredibly brave.

‘They all stayed very calm and she went down into the enclosure and was able to rescue the little boy quickly before the crocodiles could harm him.

‘Both she and Andy are very experienced and responsible zoo keepers and wlll both be mortified by what has happened.’

Tracey runs the zoo with her husband Andy, who last night said their ‘thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family’.

‘Out of respect, our tropical house will remain closed until further notice. The rest of the site will remain open,’ he said in a statement.

The couple are highly experienced animal handlers and have previously been pictured transporting 400lb crocodiles by hand with zoo staff.

The incident unfolded in front of horrified visitors inside the tropical reptile house at Johnsons of Old Hurst, near Huntingdon.

The zoo is run by fourth-generation farmer Mr Johnson, his wife and their sons, George and Edward.

A blog post on the zoo’s website says the crocodiles were initially kept to help dispose of waste meat from the butchery, but they went on to be the start of a zoo.

The zoo is now home to more than 100 animals, including lions, tigers, sloth bears, capybaras, and meerkats.

In an interview with The Sun in 2019, Andy Johnson spoke of various crocodiles, including Cuddles and her brother Romeo.

He said: ‘Cuddles isn’t that cuddly. She took my fingers a few weeks ago.’

He added of Romeo: ‘He loves the back of his leg being tickled – all the skin around their belly and legs is soft.

‘He can’t reach that bit. It keeps him calm.’

Police refused to be drawn on how the child ended up in the enclosure. They are understood to be investigating whether he was attacked by the animals before being pulled out.

A neighbour of the zoo, who asked not to be named, described hearing a ‘lot of sirens’ then an air ambulance arriving.

Father-of-two Mike Annicelli, 52, who also lives close to the zoo, described the crocodile enclosure, saying: ‘Everything is elevated, you’re far away from the animals.

‘There are some areas which have plastic glass so people can look through – but there is also 4ft fencing around the walkway so it is impossible for people to fall in accidentally.

‘Because of the way that railing’s set up it would be hard for a kid to climb over it, like a small kid.’

The incident has chilling echoes of an incident at the Tate Modern in London in 2019 when a six-year-old French tourist was hurled from an outdoor viewing platform.

He somehow survived the 100ft fall but suffered life-changing injuries.

Disturbed teenager Jonty Bravery was jailed for life with a minimum term of 15 years in 2020 for attempted murder.

He is being held at Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire.

One villager said they saw staff at the zoo hugging each other and some were in tears after the incident.

Local councillor Charlotte Lowe, 52, said: ‘I can’t fathom how this happened. There is all sorts of protection at the zoo including perspex screens.

‘The only place where people can get over into the enclosure is the walkways which have fencing around them at chest height.

‘I don’t see how a child could have gone in accidentally.’

Two police cars were parked outside the zoo entrance last night as a uniformed officer stood guard at the main gate just a few yards from the farmhouse home of Mr and Mrs Johnson.

Mr Johnson, 56, became fascinated with crocodilians during a trip to Florida and adopted several from a private collector.

The site now is said to have a collection of around 50 crocodiles and alligators which are mainly used as an environmentally friendly way of getting rid of dead livestock.

The zoo’s website states its tropical house, a converted barn, is home to American alligator, broad-snouted caiman, Cuvier’s dwarf caiman, Morelet’s crocodile, Nile crocodile, saltwater crocodile, Siamese crocodile, spectacled caiman and West African dwarf crocodile.

The largest of these species is the saltwater crocodile, which is found between India and Australia and can grow up to 20ft long and weigh 3,300lbs – half the weight of a large SUV.

About half of the planet’s 23 species of crocodilians are considered dangerous to humans with the Nile crocodile and the saltwater crocodile responsible for the vast majority of human fatalities.

On Wednesday, the zoo marked International Crocodile Day by posting a picture on social media of one of its inhabitants.

The caption read: ‘Crocodilians are at the very core of our history, our passion and the journey that has shaped Johnsons Zoological Gardens into what it is today.

‘These incredible animals have inspired generations of our family and continue to fascinate visitors from all over the country.’

A Cambridgeshire Constabulary spokesman said: ‘Officers were called to the zoo at 1.24pm to reports of an incident involving a three-year-old boy, during which he ended up in the crocodile enclosure.

‘The boy has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital [in Cambridge] with serious injuries and is critical but stable. Officers are at the hospital supporting the boy’s family. A 30-year-old man from Norfolk has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.’

Detective Inspector Verity McCann, of the force’s major crime unit, said: ‘At this stage we are speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this distressing incident to understand more about the circumstances. We do not believe the man arrested and the child are known to each other.’

Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Darryl Preston, said: ‘My thoughts go out to the family of the little boy involved in this truly horrific incident. I can only begin to imagine the trauma those involved are going through.

‘While I have been fully briefed by the Chief Constable (Simon Megicks, Cambridgeshire Constabulary), I would like to remind everyone that this is an ongoing operational issue and therefore I am not able to comment any further at this stage.’

A Huntingdonshire District Council spokesman said: ‘We are aware of the serious incident that has taken place today at Johnson’s of Old Hurst.

‘Our thoughts are with the young boy and his family at this very difficult time.

‘We are working closely with partners, including Cambridgeshire Police.

‘We urge people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding this incident while inquiries are ongoing.’

Labor’s CGT Shift Sparks Political Ripples: Chalmers Acknowledges Impact Amid Leadership Denials

0

in brief

  • Treasurer Jim Chalmers has acknowledged that the 2026 federal budget has cost Labor some “political paint”.
  • Liberal treasury spokesperson Tim Wilson said he expects the latest budget will be Chalmers’ last.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has acknowledged that the 2026 federal budget has stirred significant controversy, particularly over its proposed tax reforms, which have sparked political opposition and criticism directed at the Labor government.

The planned revisions to capital gains tax (CGT) and negative gearing, set to be voted on in the Senate next week, were described by Chalmers as difficult but necessary decisions aimed at benefiting younger Australians. He justified the measures as essential for first-time homebuyers and workers, despite their political unpopularity.

“When faced with the choice between opting for an easier political route or making challenging decisions that serve the interests of young people and first home buyers, the latter is the right path to take,” Chalmers stated during an interview with ABC radio on Friday.

He acknowledged the political resistance, noting, “We anticipated a strong partisan campaign against these changes. Nonetheless, our responsibility is to make tough decisions, not merely to choose politically convenient options.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has faced criticism from business leaders and political adversaries, with One Nation orchestrating a campaign against him, accusing him of breaking campaign promises. The reforms have been a point of contention, with claims that they were not part of Labor’s election pledges.

Chalmers rebuffed the suggestion that the changes should have been announced before the last election by saying that Labor is focused on delivering effective solutions.

“The more important thing than the politics of this is to get the policy right, to get the substance right,” he said.

“Because at the end of the day, what matters most is the tax system and the housing market are broken. We are acting to fix it.”

The government has also been accused of “back-flipping” after announcing on Thursday that concessions would be made to the CGT changes they had outlined in their budget.

Under a plan announced in the budget, the existing 50 per cent CGT discount will be scrapped in favour of an indexation system and 30 per cent minimum tax rate from 1 July 2027.

On Thursday, the government announced a concession, with Albanese announcing that the 50 per cent active asset discount — which is applied on top of the standard CGT discount for small businesses with an annual turnover of up to $2 million — would be expanded to cover businesses with a turnover of up to $10 million.

The government has said the changes will benefit 2.7 million small businesses and 98 per cent of all active firms in the country.

Butler denies leadership ambition

Opposition treasury spokesperson Tim Wilson speculated on Friday that the budget would bring down Albanese’s leadership and suggested Health Minister Mark Butler would be the ultimate beneficiary.

In a clash between the Labor and Liberal ministers on Channel Seven’s Sunrise program, Wilson interjected that Butler was positioning himself as “the next person who’s going to be prime minister once Albo falls”.

“I suspect this is the treasurer’s last budget,” Wilson told Sunrise host Natalie Barr, as “he’s hashed it up so badly”.

Butler, who was on the program to defend the government’s changes to its CGT reforms, described Wilson’s theory as “rubbish” and asked why anyone would “trust” the member for Goldstein.

The health minister told Barr that the relationship between Albanese and Chalmers was as strong as ever in the wake of the changes.

“They’ve had a productive relationship for the four years we’ve been in government … this is an enormously productive relationship, which I watch up close,” he said.

Opposition leader Angus Taylor attacked Labor’s changes at his own press conference in Queensland on Friday, saying that its CGT proposal needs to be scrapped in its entirety.

“We don’t need a backflip. We don’t need a carve-out. We need an axe to this. This is a failed policy. This is a failed budget,” Taylor said.

Chalmers, at a later press conference in NSW, also denied reports that his relationship with the PM was “frosty” as a result of the budget.

With the Opposition firmly against the changes, the government will need the support of the Greens and independents to pass its reforms. Chalmers flagged that Labor has been “engaging” with the left-wing party over the proposals.

The government is aiming to pass its reforms within a fortnight.

Essential Travel Tip: Why TSA Says ‘No’ to Ranch Dressing in Your Carry-On for the World Cup

0

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued a stern advisory to World Cup visitors from abroad: refrain from including ranch dressing in your carry-on bags.

With the influx of millions of international fans for the World Cup in the United States, many are sampling classic American flavors and, it seems, are eager to bring them back to their home countries.

One European fan took to X to exclaim, “Why did no one tell me ranch sauce is like crack? EUROPE WE NEED RANCH ASAP.”

This newfound passion for ranch dressing has certainly caught the attention of U.S. authorities.

On June 16, the TSA used Instagram to subtly address the situation, referencing the trend of travelers attempting to carry bottles of ranch dressing through airport checkpoints.

“If you’re visiting for a very large sporting event & you happen to discover RANCH while you’re here … please pack it in your CHECKED BAG on the way home,” the post read.

The post added, “Days since the last airport ranch incident: 0.”

On X, the TSA issued a similar warning and shared a photo of assorted oversized liquids — including a bottle of ranch dressing — next to a sign reminding travelers of the agency’s 3.4-ounce liquid rule.

Many Americans got a kick out of the TSA’s ranch warning.

“We should tell them about Chick-fil-A sauce that you can buy in large bottles, too!” one person said.

“Powdered ranch, guys! Powdered ranch,” another Instagram user said.

A third person said, “This is the most American thing I’ve read today! God Bless America.”

Others were stunned that the ranch dressing wasn’t available abroad.

“Ranch in Europe is rare?! Poor Europeans,” one person said.

“Who’s going to start the ranch pipeline to Europe? Instant business opportunity.”

Fox News Digital reached out to the TSA for comment.

The ranch craze is just one example of how international visitors have embraced American culture during the World Cup.

Earlier this week, Norwegian soccer fans went viral for performing synchronized “Viking rows” on Boston escalators.

Also in Boston, Scottish World Cup supporters impressed locals after reportedly drinking several bars dry.

Canada’s Star Player Endures Severe Injury During World Cup Match Against Qatar

0

In a historic yet bittersweet moment for Canadian soccer, the national team secured its first-ever World Cup victory on Thursday with a commanding 6-0 win. However, the triumph was overshadowed by a severe injury to star midfielder Ismael Kone, a pivotal player for the co-hosts.

During the match in Vancouver, a heart-stopping incident unfolded, leaving fans and teammates in shock. Kone, a crucial member of Jesse Marsch’s squad, had to leave the field after suffering a devastating injury that cast a shadow over the celebration.

The unfortunate event occurred in the 51st minute of the game. Kone, positioned in the opposition’s half, prepared to pass the ball to a teammate. As he did so, he was met by a forceful challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo. The Qatari player, approaching from behind, executed a dangerous sweep with his left leg, resulting in Kone’s serious injury.

Instantly, Kone collapsed, clutching his leg in excruciating pain. The severity of the injury was clear, and Marsch’s assistant coach, visibly distressed, approached a fourth official, exclaiming, “His leg is hanging off.”

As Kone writhed on the turf, one of Marsch’s assistant coaches rushed to a fourth official and shouted: ‘His leg is hanging off.’

Marsch later told reporters that he ‘could hear the bone snap,’ when asked about Kone’s injury in his press conference – moments after coming to blows with Qatar manager Julen Lopetegui at the final whistle.

‘Your heart goes out to him. Everybody’s shaken for him,’ he said before adding that he would be going straight to the hospital to be with his player.

Canada’s coaches and players were left incensed by the tackle, leading to a fight breaking out on the benches, while Kone remained on the ground in pain.

Defender Richie Laryea had to be held back by a Qatari player as he screamed at Madibo in fury.

Meanwhile, Kone’s stunned and concerned teammates quickly surrounded him as medical staff rushed onto the field with the stretcher not far behind.

Kone’s close friend Jonathan David in particular looked to be in distress as he watched on in shock, while an emotional Luc de Fougerolles had to be consoled by goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau as the 20-year-old defender burst into tears on the field.

After trainers put an air cast on his left leg, Kone was wheeled off the field on a stretcher, wearing an oxygen mask.

The 24-year-old put on a brave front, however, as he waved to the Vancouver crowd, who chanted his name.

Defender Moise Bombito posted a selfie with Kone from his hospital bed after the game, with the midfielder being prepared for surgery.

The injury sparked immediate fears and fury from the Canadian bench as head coach Jesse Marsch was captured looking incredulous when Madibo was initially assessed only a yellow for his reckless challenge.

Madibo’s yellow was later upgraded to a red following a VAR check. The Qatari was captured looking devastated for his part in Kone’s injury as he stood with his hands on his head surveying the scene in clear upset.

The distraught 29-year-old left the field in the 53rd minute and was seen heading down the tunnel in tears.

The sending off left Qatar down to nine men after Homam Ahmed’s red card in the first half.

Canada was already 3-0 up at the time thanks to an opening strike from Cyle Larin and a brace from David in the first half.

The Canadians extend their lead just minutes later thanks to Nathan Saliba, who was substituted on in Kone’s place.

Saliba scored Canada’s fourth from a free kick in the 64th minute just minutes after the game restarted.

In emotional scenes, the Anderlecht midfielder dedicated his goal to Kone. He ran to the bench where he was handed a ‘KONE 8’ jersey. He then returned to the field and held it up to the crowd, as fans cheered.

‘Everybody was crushed when it happened, but we had to find a way to stay focused,’ Marsch said following the game.

‘We knew that Ismaël wanted us to finish the job. There’s a lot of thoughts that go through our heads right now. We’re all thinking about him, but we’re all very proud of what we are. That’s what I would say more than anything is we’re very proud of who we are, and I think that was all on showcase today.’

Tensions also ran high after the final whistle with another verbal spat breaking out between players and staff of both sides.

Marsch could be seen arguing with Qatar manager Julen Lopetegui, who appeared to say something to the Canada boss during their postgame handshake.

While it is unclear what Lopetegui said, it sparked a furious response from Marsch, who stormed away, wildly gesticulating.

Marsch and his players then gathered in a circle in the middle of the field, bowing their heads and honoring Kone.

‘Let me be clear, the player apologized to Ismael, like came into the dressing room and apologized to him, and Ismaël told the team or let the team know that that had happened,’ Marsch said.

‘So, I don’t think that he meant such a gruesome tackle or a gruesome situation. I don’t fault him for that, but I don’t understand the reaction from their entire bench to try to start a fight about it being a red card when a clear foul just happened that broke a player’s leg. So, strange behavior, but in the end, we were more focused on Ismael.’

Jacob Shaffelburg helped add a fifth, while David rounded off his hattrick with Canada’s sixth, sealing the historic 6-0 victory.

Larin scored his second goal of the tournament on a rebound in the 16th minute to open the scoring. Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada punched away David’s volley but it fell to Larin, who pointed to his ears in celebration as the red-clad crowd roared.

David doubled the lead with a right-footed volley in the 29th, for his first goal in the run of play in more than a year.

Ahmed was sent off with a red card in the 33rd. The official initially pointed to the penalty spot, but after video review Canada was given a free kick just outside the box and the initial yellow card handed to Ahmed was changed to red.

Canada made it 3-0 in first-half stoppage time when David scored in a scramble in front of the net off a shot that caromed off the crossbar. Qatari players stood with their hands on their hips in frustration while Canada celebrated.

Saliba scored on a free kick in the 64th to make it 4-0. Mohamed Manai deflected a shot from Shaffelburg past his goalkeeper for an own goal in the 75th.

David completed the hat trick in stoppage time, joining Argentina’s Lionel Messi as the only players with three goals in a match in this World Cup.

However, with the dizzying highs of the triumph came the most crushing of emotional lows.

The injury will come as a major blow to Canada with Kone emerging as one of the standout players of Marsch’s side.

The playmaker was arguably Canada’s best player in their World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina and would have been one of the team’s key men throughout their first World Cup campaign on home soil. Now it appears his tournament is over.

Canada will now turn their attention to their meeting with Switzerland back in Vancouver in six days’ time.

It will be a pivotal clash in Group B, deciding who tops the group with both Canada and Switzerland currently on four points each.

A draw would be enough for Canada to top the group and stay on home soil for a first World Cup knockout clash.

Abuja’s Soaring Living Costs Leave Corps Members Struggling as Allowances Fall Short

A participant in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) recently voiced concerns about the escalating cost of living in Abuja, highlighting the surge in food prices as a major issue.

In a video circulating on social media, the individual expressed disbelief at the price of tomatoes, stating that ₦500 only suffices to buy five pieces at the neighborhood market.

The corps member shared their surprise, explaining how these rising expenses have made it difficult to manage daily financial demands.

Clearly exasperated, the youth corps member noted that their monthly stipend, often referred to as “allawee,” is almost entirely consumed by food expenses, leaving scant resources for other necessities.

The visibly frustrated youth corps member lamented that the monthly allowance, popularly known as “allawee,” is being consumed almost entirely by feeding costs, leaving little or nothing for other needs.

According to the corper, serving in Abuja has become financially challenging due to the high cost of basic necessities.

Her words …

“Guys what exactly is happening in Abuja that I don’t know?! I’m just coming back from the market where I went to get stuff to cook. Guys tomatoes 500 was just 5 pieces. Does it mean that each tomato is 100 Naira? You guys are not making life easy for Corpers in Abuja. My only mistake was to come and serve in Abuja. I don’t even have any savings anymore. All my allawee has finished on food and I have to eat of course, I’m tired I wan go back village….”

California Labor Union Considers Revising Billionaire Tax Plan After Facing Opposition

0

In Sacramento, California, a labor union responsible for a contentious tax proposal targeting the state’s billionaires has significantly revised its plan just one day after it qualified for the November ballot. Despite this adjustment, the union’s efforts have yet to sway Governor Gavin Newsom.

The Service Employees International Union Healthcare Workers West initially proposed a one-time 5% tax on individuals with a net worth exceeding $1 billion. This proposition has encountered resistance from various critics, including Governor Newsom, a Democrat. On Thursday, the union suggested it would retract the 5% tax if Newsom agreed to support a reduced 2% levy. However, to implement the revised proposal, it would require approval from the state Legislature before a June 25 deadline to qualify for the ballot.

Tara Gallegos, spokesperson for Governor Newsom, stated that the reduction does not address the proposal’s “fundamental flaws that harm working Californians.”

“Governor Newsom is in favor of ensuring the wealthiest Americans contribute their fair share. However, this state-specific measure is poorly designed and threatens funding for teachers, schools, clinics, and public safety,” Gallegos emphasized in her statement.

The proposed tax would apply to residents living in California as of January 1, 2026, and aims to generate $100 billion in revenue. The primary goal is to offset federal healthcare cuts affecting low-income individuals, with additional funds directed toward food assistance and educational programs.

“A 2% one-time tax on that accumulated wealth is modest by any objective measure especially if it means keeping emergency rooms open and saving patient lives,” backers wrote in a letter to Newsom.

Secretary of State Shirley Weber, a Democrat, said Wednesday night that petitioners collected more than the roughly 875,000 signatures needed to place the original proposal before voters.

States have been debating how to respond to the major tax breaks and spending cuts legislation President Donald Trump signed last year. The proposal has already divided Democrats and major labor unions and triggered an expensive campaign to defeat it. The proposed tax is backed by prominent progressives including Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Silicon Valley tech moguls have spent millions to defeat it, and prominent players in Sacramento have opposed it. They include the California Medical Association and California School Boards Association, which helped launch a committee this week urging voters to reject it if it ends up on the ballot in November. Newsom also opposed a ballot measure in 2022 to increase taxes on the wealthy, which would have funded programs that help people buy electric cars or install more chargers. Voters rejected it.

Critics say the original measure would decrease state revenue over time by pushing the ultrawealthy to leave, taking the money they would contribute in income taxes with them. That would deal a huge blow to a state that relies on its top 1% of earners for nearly half its personal income tax revenue.

“This flawed measure is the wrong approach for California’s small businesses and working families,” said Roger Salazar, a spokesperson for Golden State Promise, a political committee fighting the tax.

The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office estimates that the 5% tax would generate tens of billions of dollars in the first few years, but that income tax revenues could subsequently decline by hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

Since the proposal was announced in October, Google co-founder Sergey Brin has donated $82 million to a political committee called Building a Better California that backs a variety of initiatives designed to blunt the billionaire tax proposal. It has raised more than $118 million, counting Brin’s contributions, from fewer than a dozen donors.

State lawmakers passed budget bills this week that aim to raise revenue in other ways, including by extending a tax on healthcare providers. Newsom and legislative leaders agree to this approach, Senate President pro Tempore Monique Limón said.

“The budget, as approved by the Legislature and now being negotiated with the Governor, does not include the billionaire’s tax,” the Democrat said in a statement. “Instead, it reflects additional revenues to address our long-term structural deficit.”

Tragic Drowning of College Girls: Family Refutes Napping Claims in Heartfelt Statement

0

The families of two college students who tragically drowned after being swept into the ocean have come forward to clarify details about the incident, refuting claims that the students were napping when the sudden tides struck.

On June 10, Harshita Nair, 21, and Mahial Sran, 20, both residents of Fremont, California, lost their lives to a ‘sneaker wave’ while sunbathing on Panther Beach in Bonny Doon, Santa Cruz.

Their path to safety was abruptly blocked by a massive wave that surged significantly further up the beach than any prior waves, catching them off guard.

Contrary to earlier reports, neither Nair nor Sran were asleep on the beach, according to Nair’s father, Ashok Nair, who spoke to the California Post to set the record straight.

“They weren’t sleeping there, because their bags were completely dry,” Ashok explained, noting that if the girls had been asleep, they wouldn’t have been away from their belongings.

‘If they were sleeping, their bags would also have gone with them or would have been completely wet,’ he noted.

Sran’s teenage brother, Aagman, also noted that his sister was a responsible young woman who cared for him and all those around her.

‘She always took care of whatever needed to be done. She always delivered,’ he said.

Cal Fire spokesman Michael Horn said officials were first alerted about the tragedy at 5pm and eight rescuers promptly swam into the dangerous waters to save the two longtime friends.

One of the rescuers, who did not want to be named, said he brought Sran ashore after diving into a six-foot break along with another responder.

Nair had already been pulled from the ocean close to Yellow Bluff Beach. The pair had entered the shoreline via a keyhole in the rocks.

The term ‘keyhole’ refers to a section of shoreline that allows access to a smaller stretch of sand, but only when the tide is out or waves are not crashing through it.

‘We go through that keyhole, and there’s waves crashing through it,’ the swimmer previously told the Post. ‘And then me and my partner, we start searching for the second victim.’

The rescuer said he saw the young woman floating face down, about 20 yards from the shore.

‘I’m able to get her up on my chest and keep her airway out of the water, and my partner is able to swim over and clip in with me, and we just swim her in together,’ he said.

Both women were alive when they were pulled from the water.

But Nair died soon after she was recovered, while Sran was rushed to the hospital where she received emergency treatment until Saturday.

The two women graduated together from Washington High School in 2023.

They were due to graduate college in 2027, Nair in legal studies at UC Berkeley and Sran in public health and psychology at San José State University.

Nair hoped to work in law and public service to directly help communities and expand their access to opportunity.

At school, Sran was a member of the Public Health Peer Ambassadors club which hosts productivity workshops and social events to help public health students.

Officials at the school said: ‘The entire SJSU community shares in the grief felt by those who loved and cared for her.’

Meanwhile at Berkeley officials said Nair’s death caused ‘immense sadness’ at the school.

‘We wish to extend our condolences to this student’s family and friends,’ spokesman Adam Ratliff told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The outgoing Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) President at UC Berkeley, Abigail Verino, also noted on social media that Nair once won the superlative of ‘Most likely to be the kindest soul.’

‘That superlative describes exactly the incredible person she was to every person she crossed paths with,’ Verino posted. ‘Her warmth, love for life and compassion are what she would be forever known for.’

‘The Office of the President remembers and celebrates her vibrant spirit that made the office what it was,’ she added.

An online obituary further described Nair as a ‘cherished sister, granddaughter and a treasured friend to many.’

‘In her short but beautiful life, Harshita left an unforgettable mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her,’ it read, saying she radiated, ‘energy, warmth and joy wherever she went.’

‘She had a deep love for adventure and embraced every moment with enthusiasm and courage,’ the obituary continued. ‘Her spirit was contagious, her laughter uplifting and her presence comforting.’

It then went on to say Nair, ‘simply could not bear to see anyone sad.’

‘Harshita always found a way to lift others up, to brighten their day and to make them feel seen and valued.

‘Her kindness, compassion and unwavering positivity touched countless lives,’ the obituary said.

‘Though her time with us was far too short, the love she gave and the joy she shared will continue to inspire and guide us,’ it concluded.

Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan also remembered the college students in his own statement posted to Facebook on Tuesday, saying their ‘young lives were filled with promise.’

‘Our Fremont community is heartbroken by this tragic loss,’ he said. ‘My deepest condolences are with the families, friends, classmates and everyone grieving this unimaginable loss.’

The mayor then urged residents to exercise caution at nearby beaches, as the California coast continues to be pounded by strong ocean swells.

Panther Beach in particular is known for having a steep surf line and strong currents that combine to create dangerous conditions.

‘Sneaker waves, strong currents and rising tides can strike without warning,’ Salwan said, reminding residents to ‘never turn your back on the ocean.’

Elye Wahi of Côte d’Ivoire Granted Clearance for World Cup Clash Against Germany in Canada

In brief

  • Côte d’Ivoire forward Elye Wahi has received authorisation to travel to Canada for this weekend’s World Cup clash with Germany.
  • Wahi was linked to an investigation into suspected sports corruption.

Ivorian striker Elye Wahi has been cleared to journey to Canada for the upcoming World Cup match against Germany, as confirmed by the nation’s football federation.

This update follows an earlier announcement that he would be unable to travel due to visa issues.

“The Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) is pleased to announce that Elye Wahi’s administrative status has been resolved positively. He now possesses the required permissions to enter Canadian soil,” according to a statement posted on the official X account of the Ivorian Football Federation.

A representative from Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) explained to Reuters that in certain special cases, Temporary Resident Permits can be issued to individuals who might otherwise be ineligible or do not satisfy the criteria for temporary entry into Canada.

The IRCC added that, without signed consent, it was not possible to provide details regarding any individual application.

Wahi was linked to an investigation into suspected sports corruption, with French authorities saying unusual betting patterns were detected around a yellow card Wahi received in a Ligue 1 match while playing for Nice last month.

Wahi, who was not immediately available to comment, was not named as a suspect.

A spokesperson for the Marseille prosecutor’s office told Reuters a 23-year-old Ligue 1 player was taken into custody on 29 May as part of an investigation into suspected organised fraud, organised sports corruption, handling stolen goods and money laundering.

‘Difficult period’

The FIF said it had full confidence in Wahi.

“To date, the FIF has not been officially notified of any legal or administrative proceedings concerning him,” the FIF said in a statement.

“During this particularly difficult period, the FIF offers its full support to the player and reaffirms its confidence in him. Elye Wahi remains an important member of the Ivory Coast national team.”

The FIF earlier said Wahi would not be able to join the delegation’s trip to Canada.

“This is because the administrative authorisations required for him to enter Canadian territory have not yet been obtained. Elye Wahi will therefore remain in the United States until the team returns,” it said.

Wahi, who previously represented France at Under-21 level, made his senior international debut for Côte d’Ivoire in March.

Côte d’Ivoire beat Ecuador 1-0 in their first Group E match, while Germany are coming off a 7-1 rout of Curaçao.

Open Heaven 19 June 2026 – Always Praise God

Open Heaven 19 June 2026 Friday Daily Devotional By Pastor E. A. Adeboye – Always Praise God

Open Heaven 19 June 2026 TOPIC – Always Praise God

MEMORISE: Praise ye the Lord: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely. – Psalm 147:1 (KJV)

READ: Isaiah 38:18-20 (KJV)

18 For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.

19 The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth.

20 The Lord was ready to save me: therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the Lord.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalm 78-80

Open Heaven 19 June 2026 MESSAGE

Years ago, one of my daughters was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx, and the doctors told her that the only solution was to surgically remove her larynx (which is also known as the voice box). After the surgery, my wife and I visited her to pray and assure her that with God, all things are possible. Owing to the fact that her voice box had been removed, she couldn’t speak, and the only way she could communicate was by texting. One day, I returned home from a trip, and as I got out of my car, I saw somebody rolling on the ground. It turned out to be my daughter, whose larynx had been removed and when she saw me, she said, “It’s me, Daddy; I can speak again.” I was genuinely grateful to God for restoring her voice and allowing her to sing praises to Him again.

Beloved, God gave you a voice so you could use it to praise Him. As long as you are alive, you should use your voice to praise Him continually. God deserves all your praise, and it is one sure way to get answers to your prayers.

During Hezekiah’s reign, he appointed priests and Levites to minister to the Lord. Their job was to offer praise continually at the gates of the tents of the Lord, and the first thing anybody coming to the tents would see was the priests and Levites praising God (2 Chronicles 31:2). After a while, disaster struck, and King Hezekiah fell ill. He was so ill that God sent Prophet Isaiah to tell him that he would die. The king was devastated by the news, so he turned his face to a wall and cried out to God. He reminded God that he had walked before Him in truth and done things that were good in His sight. God heard his prayer and sent Isaiah to tell him that he would not die (Isaiah 38:1-8). The king knew how much God loves praise; therefore, he told God that the grave could not praise him and only the living could, as we see in today’s Bible reading. Praise is always good and comely before God (Psalm 147:1).

Beloved, no matter what your circumstances are, you should praise God continually as long as you are alive. When you praise God, you are also destroying the enemy’s plans and silencing the avenger (Psalm 149:6-7). Let praise be your response to everything.

Open Heaven 19 June 2026 KEY POINT

Your voice exists primarily to sing praises to God.

Open Heaven 19 June 2026 HYMN 18 – Praise To The Lord The Almighty, The King Of Creation

1 Praise to the Lord,
the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health
and salvation:
Join the great throng
psaltery, organ and song
sounding in glad adoration.

2 Praise to the Lord,
over all things he gloriously reigneth:
Borne as on eagle-wings, safely his saints,
He sustaineth
Has thou not seen
How all thou needest hath been
Granted in what he ordaineth?

3 Praise to the Lord,
Who doth prosper thy way and defend thee;
Surely his goodness and mercy shall ever
attend thee; ponder anew,
What the almighty can do
Who with his love doth befriend thee.

4 Praise to the Lord!
O let all that is in me adore him!
All that has breath join with Abraham’s
Seed to adore him! Let the Amen,
Sum all our praises again;
Now as we worship before him.

Argentinian TV Host Florencia Peña Resigns Following False Report of Lionel Messi’s Father’s Death

0

In a surprising turn of events, an Argentine television host has resigned after mistakenly announcing the death of Lionel Messi’s father, just two days following Messi’s triumphant performance for the Argentina national team in their opening World Cup match.

Florencia Peña, during a live stream on Luzu TV’s “El Show del Verano” on Thursday, incorrectly reported the passing of Jorge Messi. The blunder quickly garnered attention and concern from viewers.

Peña stated on air, “I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Messi’s father has just passed away,” as reported by the US Sun. She further speculated, “In the midst of the World Cup, he’s going to have to leave,” assuming the worst without confirmation.

This misinformation prompted a response from the Messi family, who clarified the situation. They confirmed that while Jorge Messi had been dealing with a health issue, he was very much alive, highlighting the need for accuracy and responsibility in reporting.

The Messi family called out the irresponsible reporting, sharing that Jorge Messi had been battling an undisclosed health issue but hadn’t died.

“He is currently under medical supervision, recovering, and progressing favorably within his current condition,” the family said in a statement, according to ESPN.

“Given the versions, rumors, and speculation that have circulated in recent hours, the family wishes to express its deep displeasure at the lack of sensitivity, respect, and scruples with which some people have treated a strictly private and family matter,” the family wrote.

It was not revealed what illness the elder Messi was battling or what his condition is.

The 51-year-old television personality claimed she was given unverified information about Messi’s 68-year-old father and ran with it.

“I have to clarify that this false information was given to me live on air as if it had been checked the show’s production team, and I trusted it,” Peña wrote on her Instagram Story Thursday.

Peña apologized for the on-air blunder and said she was leaving the show on Thursday.

“I apologize to the Messi family for the awful moment I imagine they are going through. I am very ashamed to have been the vehicle for this pain,” she said. “Even so, I take responsibility for being part of the mistake, and that is why I decided to step aside and end my participation in Luzu. I apologize again from the bottom of my heart: I was wrong.”

Conflicting reports claim Peña and the production staff involved in the false reporting were all dismissed from the station.

“Luzu TV deeply regrets what happened on air during the program. Our channel finds the dissemination of sensitive information without proper prior verification unacceptable. For this reason, Luzu TV management has decided to dismiss all those responsible. Florencia Peña will decide to step down,” the station said in a statement shared by founder Nico Occhiato. “We reaffirm our commitment to responsible, respectful and rigorous communication.”

Peña faced fierce backlash from Messi fans and Argentinians over the error, including an online scolding from President Javier Milei.

“TRASH CORP,” the 55-year-old politician wrote on X.

“The aberrant and unscrupulous unchecked statements by Florencia Peña on a streaming channel—which would still be aberrant even if the information had been true, since they trample on a citizen’s private life—remind us of the impunity with which some individuals believe they can operate simply by holding a microphone or a pen in hand, as if that fact implied not only that they don’t have to verify the information they spread, but also that they need not adhere to the most basic tenets of human decency, morality, or respect for the truth,” he said.

Milei called Peña a “low-rent gossipmonger” as he credited Luzu TV for issuing a correction and booting “this nefarious character.

Messi scored a hat trick, leading Argentina to a 3-0 win over Algeria in its first match of the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday.

After his first goal, the soccer legend was visibly flooded with emotion as he wiped tears from his eyes with his jersey.

He remained cryptic after the game when he explained his very public display of emotion.

“My tears after the first goal? I’ve had some tough days. It wasn’t related to football. And those feelings were because of that,” Messi said in Spanish after the match, according to the Associated Press. “I thank my teammates, the coaching staff and the delegation for helping me.”
