Unveiling the Nancy Guthrie Mystery: The Alarming Threat Sneaking Up on Unaware Americans

0

The theory of a “wrench attack” is emerging as a potential motive in the suspected abduction of Nancy Guthrie on February 1st. Experts caution that criminals are increasingly scouring the internet for indicators of wealth, which could help them identify future victims.

Lisa J. Miller, a former detective and law enforcement executive with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, explains, “Criminals often use open-source data and social media to pinpoint their targets and identify vulnerabilities. News releases about wealth, social media posts flaunting lavish spending, luxury items, and large homes all serve as potential leads. Many people share parts of their lives online, often highlighting their happiest moments.”

While wrench attacks can involve complex crypto transactions and encrypted communications, including conspiracies that may stretch across borders, the basic premise is straightforward: a “mastermind” orchestrates the attack from afar, hiring local individuals to execute an abduction involving threats and violence to demand a ransom.

According to the cybersecurity firm Certik, there have been 34 documented wrench attack incidents in the first four months of 2026, marking a 41% increase from the previous year.

While Guthrie is the 84-year-old mother of NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, Miller said relatives of the real targets can sometimes be hurt in wrench attacks because they are more accessible than the public figures themselves.

“Nancy Guthrie could have been viewed by someone watching [her ‘Today’] segment as a vulnerability, Savannah Guthrie’s pressure point,” Miller said.

As a result, everyone could benefit from minimizing the amount of personal information about them online.

“Protecting ourselves requires the usual things we have all been told about before — restrict your social media profiles, never post photos of your home, know who the audience is when you post pictures of your children, family, visible signs of financial security,” Miller said. “Monitor your online presence when it comes to what data is available about you online.”

There are paid services that specialize in locking down your personal information as it appears online, she added, and some tech firms, such as Google, will help for free.

“It’s all easier said than done because we live in an ever-increasing digital world, where more people know and have the skills to mine open source information to get data about you,” Miller said. “And who hasn’t shared the pictures of the best and prettiest dogs in the world with people they love, or pics of their grandchildren?”

Not everyone who sees those posts is friendly — or even safe, she told News Media.

“Safety in this digital world is very similar to advice I give women about their personal safety,” she said. “Be aware.”

While the vast majority of documented wrench attacks have occurred in France, the United States is a distant second.

Certik identified Guthrie’s case as an example of “proxy target selection,” meaning someone else could have been physically taken because they were more vulnerable than a wealthy relative. The report noted an early $6 million cryptocurrency ransom demand.

“In more than half of those cases, the real target wasn’t the person taken,” Miller explained, citing Certik’s report on wrench attacks in the first four months of 2026.

However, law enforcement has not publicly identified Guthrie’s disappearance as connected to a wrench attack.

“The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has not received any reports reference ‘wrench attacks’ in our community,” a spokesperson told News Media back in May. “The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains active and ongoing. When there is a significant update, it will be shared publicly.”

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told News Media Monday that he’d flagged the Certik report to investigators on the Guthrie case.

Savannah Guthrie had often spoken of her Tucson roots, and “Today” ran segments highlighting her mother and favorite hometown haunts. But other wrench attack victims have had much lower profiles — yet still showed public displays of wealth that may have led attackers to them, Miller said.

“If Savannah was in fact the target as I and others suspect…someone studied her for a period of time,” Miller said. “That study very likely could have been to find her pressure point because she has security in her New York life and world.”

While authorities have not confirmed whether they are looking into the Guthrie case as a potential wrench attack, the masked man who appeared on her Nest doorbell camera could be the hired muscle, Miller said, with someone more sophisticated pulling the strings and the initial attempts to collect ransom.

Another image from her doorbell camera, taken overnight about three weeks earlier, showed a similar masked figure — a sign that he did scout her home in advance.

“Predators target others for a variety of reasons, and it is not the fault of the victim they were targeted by a monster who brought evil to their doorstep,” Miller said.

Divergent Revolutionizes 3D Printing with Breakthrough in Production Efficiency

0

Divergent Technologies, renowned for its pioneering work in 3D-printing components for high-performance vehicles like Bugatti supercars and advanced weaponry such as Tomahawk missiles, is set to unveil a state-of-the-art facility in Long Beach, California. This expansive factory will feature cutting-edge industrial metal printers designed to manufacture over 30,000 missile airframes annually.

The newly introduced Monolith One 3D printers are engineered for the rapid and efficient production of large-scale parts. Housed within a sprawling 430,000-square-foot facility that can accommodate up to 64 Monolith Ones, this innovation promises to enhance manufacturing output by a remarkable eight times.

Once fully operational, the Long Beach factory will not only be capable of producing 60,000 warhead casings in addition to the missile airframes, but it will also create employment opportunities for more than 1,000 individuals.

This development arises amidst the United States’ ongoing efforts to replenish its weapon stockpiles, which have been significantly depleted following extended conflicts involving Russia and Ukraine, along with rising tensions in the Middle East. Although hostilities with Iran have subsided, Pentagon officials emphasize the importance of restoring military inventory levels.

“It’s evident that leaders in the defense industry are acknowledging the necessity for expanded production capabilities across various systems. The capacity to manufacture tens of thousands of missile airframes or warhead casings from a single site is a substantial contribution to the overall defense industrial base,” stated Lukas Czinger, co-founder of Divergent, in an interview with The Post.

“What’s particularly significant is that this output is being generated from a flexible manufacturing platform. Historically, achieving high production volumes would require substantial investments in tooling, infrastructure and long lead-time supply chains,” he added. “We’re able to produce complex structures at scale while maintaining the flexibility to shift production as requirements evolve.”

That effort has put companies like Divergent on Washington’s radar. The company hosted Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in January as part of his “Arsenal of Freedom” tour, which spotlighted efforts to rebuild America’s defense sector and re-shore our manufacturing.

For Divergent, it’s the latest expansion from a company that has spent the past decade developing technology to 3D-print complex metal structures.

The company’s DAPS (Digital Additive Production System) platform has already been used to build parts for major defense programs as well as lightweight components for supercars like McLaren and its very own Czinger supercar. Divergent also works with defense contractors including Lockheed Martin, RTX and General Atomics.

Unlike traditional defense supply chains, which often take months or years to deliver new hardware, Divergent says DAPS can collapse timelines into weeks or days by handling design, printing and assembly in one integrated system.

And Czinger notes the ability to be nimble is increasingly important.

“With DAPS, the same factory can manufacture different metal products simply by changing the design and production input … it dramatically reduces the manufacturing constraints associated with introducing new products or increasing output,” Czinger said. “As a result, we can respond to changing demand far more quickly than traditional manufacturing models that rely on dedicated production lines.”

The company has raised more than $1 billion since father-son duo Kevin and Lukas Czinger launched it in 2014. Most recently, Divergent was valued at $2.3 billion following a $290 million funding round last year.

The expansion is already underway, with the additional printers expected to come online over the next two years.

“This flexibility is increasingly important for missile systems, unmanned systems and other defense applications where requirements can evolve rapidly,” Czinger added. “Rather than building a factory around a single product, we’ve built a manufacturing platform that can be redirected as customer needs change, enabling faster scaling and greater responsiveness when demand surges.”

Top 5 Darkest Comic Book Movies Ever Ranked: Unveiling Cinema’s Grittiest Superhero Tales

0

When discussing comic book films, our minds often drift to the superhero genre, known for its action-packed yet light-hearted nature. These movies rarely delve into the truly dark, given their often fantastical premises—like a wealthy individual donning a bat costume. However, the comic book world is vast, with numerous stories that embrace a much darker tone.

Occasionally, these more somber graphic novels are transformed into films that fully embrace the gritty essence of their origins. When executed well, these adaptations can be as intense and unflinching as the most dedicated fans would expect. Today, we’ll explore five of these notably dark comic book adaptations, ranked by the depths of their darkness.

The iconic Guy Fawkes mask worn by V (played by Hugo Weaving) in the Wachowskis’ “V for Vendetta” has become a widely recognized emblem for protestors and dissidents. This is understandable, given the film’s themes and its roots in the graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd.

“V for Vendetta” portrays a dystopian Britain under the iron fist of the tyrannical Adam Sutler (John Hurt). In this world, dissenters and those who dare to be different vanish without a trace. Propaganda is omnipresent, and citizens live in constant fear of the secret police. Amidst this oppressive regime, the anarchist V and his unintended ally, Evey Hammond (Natalie Portman), navigate a perilous landscape. V is committed to dismantling the malevolent Norsefire party, while Evey initially struggles to simply survive.

5. V for Vendetta

Both in its visuals and narrative, “V for Vendetta” is profoundly dark. Themes of persecution, suffering, and danger permeate the film, which moves forward with an inexorable intensity. Brief moments of respite are rare, offering little relief from the film’s relentless tension. Despite this, “V for Vendetta” remains a captivating experience, even if it isn’t always an enjoyable one.

“V for Vendetta” depicts a fascist Britain where the fascistic Adam Sutler (John Hurt) wields power. Here, people who demand change or dare to be different are taken in the middle of night and never seen again. Propaganda is everywhere, and everyone has to be on their toes the whole time for fear of attracting attention from the secret police. This is where the anarchist V and his accidental accomplice Evey Hammond (Natalie Portman) operate, with the former working tirelessly on creating a movement that will finally topple the evil Norsefire party, and the latter mainly trying to cope and survive … at least, at first.

Both visually and content-wise, “V for Vendetta” is an extremely dark movie. Persecution, torment, danger, and abuse lurk around every corner. The movie rolls forward at a relentlessly crushing pace, with only the occasional moment of calm to offer a breather from its darkness. Despite all this, “V for Vendetta” is a compelling watch, even when it’s not necessarily a fun one.

4. A History of Violence

Apart from 2022’s “Crimes of the Future,” David Cronenberg stopped filming horror movies during much of his later career. That didn’t stop him from exploring some seriously dark material, though. It’s easy to forget, but Cronenberg’s “A History of Violence” is actually based on a graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke — and as anyone who has seen or read it knows, the drama explores some incredibly dark corners.

“A History of Violence” begins when humble Indiana diner operator Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) foils a robbery attempt by ruthlessly killing the attackers. As his heroics become national news, ominous characters arrive in his small town, and we find out that Tom may actually be a deadly hitman who retired under an alias. This suspicion sets forth events that ends up shaking the Stall family to its very core.

As befits the title, the violent moments in the movie are indeed extraordinarily violent. However, the true darkness in “A History of Violence” comes from the sheer strain Tom and his loved ones are under, thanks to the questions that suddenly hang above their very existence as a family. The film ends in an open fashion, with the immediate threats vanquished but the family’s happiness still up in the air. No major character walks away unchanged, and the movie communicates clearly that the past is not a thing that you can easily escape.

3. Snowpiercer

“Snowpiercer” manages to be incredibly dark despite — or because of — the fact that its visual style alternates between traditionally dystopian washed-out colors and a vibrant comic book look. Based on Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand, and Jean-Marc Rochette’s graphic novel “Le Transperceneige” (aka “Snowpiercer”), Bong Joon Ho’s 2013 post-apocalyptic action thriller builds its darkness from its surroundings.

Here, the scant remnants of humanity are stuck in a perpetually moving train after an ill-advised attempt to stop global warming has plunged the whole planet into a hostile ice age. As deadly as the world has become, things aren’t much better aboard the train — at least, if you happen to be one of the downtrodden residents of the Snowpiercer’s tail section.

“Snowpiercer” depicts a hopeless, segregated society where the impoverished struggle to survive while simultaneously understanding that the train is the only option they have. When things reach a boiling point and a revolution begins, the movie’s copious action sequences don’t give us too many glimmers of long-term hope, either. Every train compartment that Curtis Everett’s (Chris Evans) revolutionaries take comes at a cost, and horrible revelations about the past and present abound. By the ending of “Snowpiercer,” the viewer might have a high opinion on the excellent film — but not necessarily on the state of humanity.

2. The Crow

Based on James O’Barr’s comic of the same name, Alex Proyas’ “The Crow” (1994) is one of the most famous examples of dark comic book movie adaptations. This is a combination of several factors: The heavy subject matter it covers, the stylistic choices it uses, and the real-life tragedy that’s forever associated with it.

As Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) is resurrected by a mystical crow and becomes a supernatural force of vengeance, he dresses like the rock star he wanted to be in life and operates in a hellishly dystopian vision of a city that’s entirely based on goth aesthetic. The movie is full of hopelessness, evil, and ruthlessness; a nightmare based on loose memories of the real Devil’s Night arson sprees that haunted Detroit in the ’80s. The few good things that exist tend to wear down, die, or become corrupted, one way or another.

And then there’s the matter of the movie’s star, Brandon Lee. “The Crow” was famously finished after Brandon Lee died during filming, which has forever tied the tragedy to the film’s grimdark plot and visual style. Put all of this together, and “The Crow” is not only the poster film for comic book movie darkness. It belongs in the discussion of the darkest movies out there, period.

1. Oldboy

Park Chan-wook’s 2003 action thriller “Oldboy” is a well-known example of the kind of darkness the South Korean film industry is capable of producing. However, not everyone may know that this bleak tale of revenge is based on the “Oldboy” manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi.

“Oldboy” tells the story of frumpy businessman Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), who’s abducted for reasons that are initially mysterious to him and the audience, and kept captive in a small room for no less than 15 years. Once he is finally released, he sets on a quest to discover just what happened to him, and why. The mystery that unfolds over the course of the movie turns out to be extremely troubling stuff, and the iconic hallway fight between Dae-su and the gang affiliated with his true captor is only a small fraction of the terrors that await him.

The movie features one of the most awful gut punch plot twists out there, some of the most violent action around, and of course that famous octopus-eating scene. All of this amounts to not just a dark comic book movie, but easily the grimmest film on this list — and of any genre.

Tom Holland Confirms Marriage to Zendaya: A Hollywood Love Story Unveiled

0

Tom Holland has officially announced his marriage to Zendaya, sharing his joy by stating, “I found my person, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.” At 30, the actor known for his role as Spider-Man, confirmed the news in a candid interview with Esquire UK, which comes after months of swirling rumors about the couple’s marital status.

Speculation had intensified following the circulation of AI-generated images depicting a wedding between Holland and Zendaya, who is 29. When asked if these images led to any confusion among family members who might have thought they had missed the real ceremony, Holland addressed the issue with a touch of humor, saying, “No, because they were all there…That’s all you’ll get on that.”

The confirmation of their nuptials was first hinted at by Zendaya’s longtime stylist, Law Roach. During an interview at the 2026 Actor Awards in Los Angeles this past February, Roach had suggested that the beloved couple had already exchanged vows.

And confirming the nuptials did actually happen, he said: ‘No, because they were all there…That’s all you’ll get on that.’

Zendaya’s longtime stylist Law Roach, first claimed that Tom and Zendaya were married when being interviewed at the 2026 Actor Awards in LA, in February.

Roach, 47, casually dropped the news by saying, ‘The wedding has already happened. You missed it!’ but the couple declined to clarify at the time.

Zendaya first debuted her Jessica McCormack engagement ring at the 2025 Golden Globes.

Talking about his love, Tom said: ‘Our business can present very stressful situations and it’s really nice to have a bedrock of a relationship that will stand the test of time.

‘We can support each other in ways that only we can, because only we understand really what it’s like to live this life, and I think that is such a luxury, because I just don’t understand how I would be able to have anything like that with anyone else.

‘So, for me, I found my person. She’s my best friend, and I’m the happiest I have ever been when I’m with her, but I have also never felt so supported and safe, ever. Period.’

He also spoke about his first impressions of the actress in a refreshingly open chat.

He said: ‘Obviously, I was super excited at the prospect of working with her and getting to know her.

‘She smashed her audition out the park and got the part before she’d even left the room. I remember when she closed the door to leave, [producer] Amy Pascal was immediately like, “Well, she’s getting the job.”’

Zendaya and Tom Holland have been romantically linked since 2016, after they first met on the set of Spider:Man Homecoming.

They kept their relationship extremely low-key for years, and enjoyed their first joint red carpet appearance in five years at the photocall of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in Madrid on Monday.

Tom previously told Men’s Health that he avoids walking the carpet with his partner at premieres ‘because it’s not my moment, it’s her moment, and if we go together, it’s about us’.

There will be plenty of opportunity for joint appearances this year though, as well as reuniting as Peter Parker and MJ in the Spider-Man movie, the two also star together in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, due for release in July.

Tom spoke about Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth instalment of Holland’s tenure as the superhero, in his latest Esquire interview.

He said: ‘The movie is already the best Spider-Man movie that we’ve ever made…This movie is a real mystery and for a large portion of the film, even Spider-Man is a little bit at odds and lost and is like, “What is going on?”

‘We’re just trying to find ways to make this movie feel like a detective movie.’

And detailing who would be a great successor for the role, he said: ‘ Owen Cooper would be awesome. Obviously he’s super talented and the talk of the town right now.’

‘In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next.’

He also touched on his 15-year goal to win an Academy Award, which he shared with The Hollywood Reporter during an interview in 2017:

He said: ‘It is truly a vote of our community. I’m sure there’s something quite poetic about [Leonardo DiCaprio] winning it later in his career ’cause I’m sure that felt so special to him.

‘So I’m in no rush, but there is still obviously ambition and desire to one day stand up there and thank my mum.’

He was also asked about his iconic Lip Sync Battle performance of Rihanna’s Umbrella which went viral for all the right reasons.

He said: ‘I did that Lip Sync Battle show when I was 20 or 21 and I didn’t think twice about it.

‘But now, as someone who’s had a little bit more experience in the public eye and has lived a life of fame for the last decade, I would really overanalyse doing something like that.

‘I just think, as you get older, you get a little bit more cynical. The downsides of something might be a little bit more obvious than the upsides of something.’

Taylor Swift Strategizes Brand Protection Amidst Romance with Travis Kelce

Taylor Swift must safeguard her brand as her fiery romance with Travis Kelce seems to be on a flawless course.

The 34-year-old pop icon, who was recently seen holding hands with the NFL star of the same age during a visit to a zoo in Sydney, needs to ensure their relationship remains positive, especially after Travis’ recent ‘missteps,’ according to an expert’s exclusive insight shared with DailyMail.com.

Brand strategist and messaging advisor Adam Hanft explained, “Taylor possesses a vast reserve of goodwill and adoration that can withstand any behavioral or reputational blunders by her boyfriend.” He seemed to be alluding to Travis’ Super Bowl outburst and his decision to party following a mass shooting at the Kansas City parade.

“The key will be whether he can maintain a respectable image and not cause embarrassment for either of them,” Hanft continued, emphasizing the importance of her response if such issues become ongoing.

Travis’ actions not only risk damaging the Reputation singer’s $1.1 billion net worth but could also impact his own image and even that of the NFL.

‘If Travis is plagued by impulse control issues, and demonstrates a psychological resistance to take a back-seat to her celebrity – which is programmatic given that football heroes are typically in contention for the Nobel Prize for Testosterone – and she ends up dumping him, his personal brand will be battered,’ Hanft maintained.

‘Should the relationship end up that way, the brand of the NFL will also be bloodied, as it will reinforce the perception of football players pumped up on all the wrong things,’ he added.

The warning comes amid Travis taking waves of criticism for nearly coming to blows with his coach Andy Reid during the Super Bowl.

After the Kansas City Chiefs offense struggled in the first half, Travis reacted angrily to Reid removing him from a play.

He pushed Reid, causing the 65-year-old to lose his balance. At one point, the player even grabbed Reid’s left arm, seemingly to support him, while he was yelling in his face. Eventually, a teammate intervened and pulled Kelce away.

While fans were quick to criticize the aggressive move, a more composed Travis made sure to underline the influence Reid has had on his career after the game.

‘I got the greatest coach this game has ever seen,’ Kelce said to reporters. ‘And I owe my entire career to that guy and being able to control how emotional I get and I just love him, man.’

A few days later, Travis’ spectacularly insensitive decision to party hard after a mass shooting at his Super Bowl parade drew even more anger from the public.

'Taylor has an enormous reservoir of goodwill, and indeed, adoration, that can well withstand behavioral and reputational missteps by her boyfriend,' said brand strategist and messaging advisor, Adam Hanft , appearing to reference Travis' on-field meltdown at the Super Bowl

Mere hours after 22 fans were shot — nine children among them, a young mother dead — Travis hit up ‘Granfalloon Restaurant and Bar’ and took selfies with cops while carrying an open beer bottle on the street, having earlier taken to the parade stage looking far too drunk to speak.

Outraged fans on social media used the terms ‘Caveman’ and ‘douchebag’ to describe the situation.

In the aftermath, Kelce matched Taylor’s $100,000 donation to victims of the shooting.

A GoFundMe page shows a pair of $50,000 donations from his charity, the Eighty-Seven & Running Foundation – an organization that aims to help ‘underserved youth strive to become productive citizens.’

Despite Travis’ public displays of repentance, Taylor, as brand expert Hanft claimed, needs to be careful about her future with the athlete to protect her brand, which Bloomberg puts at $1.1 billion, thanks in part to her massive 146-date worldwide Eras Tour and its subsequent tour movie.

It comes after Forbes estimated Swift had a net worth upwards of $740 million in July.

Swift stands out as one of the rare individuals who achieved billionaire status predominantly through her music and performances, according to Bloomberg.

Taylor has already protected her brand through a slew of celebrity romances such as Joe Jonas, Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer, Taylor Lautner and Calvin Harris

Her brief involvement with English actor Tom Hiddleston followed her separation from Harris, eventually leading to a six-year partnership with Joe Alwyn in 2017.

When her romance with Travis first broke last year, the football player said that he knew he had to be on his best behavior.

‘That was the biggest thing to me,’ he told WSJ. ‘Make sure I don’t say anything that would push Taylor away.’

Unveiling Allie Eklund: The Heartbeat of Steven McBee Jr.’s ‘McBee Dynasty’ Romance

In the latest season of McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys, Steven McBee Jr. is making headlines with a new romantic interest.

The Season 3 opener focuses heavily on the repercussions for Steve McBee Sr., who admitted to committing crop insurance fraud in 2024. Consequently, he received a two-year prison sentence and a hefty penalty of over $4 million in restitution. Now, his sons, who have taken over the management of the family farm, face the challenge of covering this financial burden.

Despite the family’s financial struggles, McBee Jr., the eldest sibling, finds himself smitten with his new girlfriend, Allie Eklund, introduced in the season’s first episode. Although she bears a resemblance to his former girlfriend, Calah Jackson, who was featured in the initial two seasons, it’s apparent early on that Eklund brings a different energy. McBee Jr. notes that he and Jackson have cut ties since she skipped his brother’s wedding last season.

Curious about Allie Eklund and her current relationship status with Steven McBee Jr.? Here’s what we know so far!

Who is Allie Eklund?

Allie Eklund, 29, hails from Austin, Texas. She is a versatile professional, working as a content creator, model, and entrepreneur. Her family owns a ranch in Fredericksburg, Texas. Eklund and McBee Jr. connected through Instagram, where he persistently reached out in her DMs until she agreed to meet. Their relationship became public in November 2025, soon after Eklund visited Missouri to meet the McBee family.

Are Steven McBee Jr. and Allie Eklund still dating?

No, Steven McBee Jr. and Allie Eklund are no longer dating.

McBee took to Instagram back in April to accuse Eklund of cheating on him at Stagecoach Music Festival. Eklund vehemently denied his claims, outing the egregious and derogatory text messages he sent her in the wake of the scandal. On top of accusing her of cheating, McBee repeatedly called Eklund a “slut” and a “hooker” in the profanity-filled messages.

McBee later apologized for his outburst, sharing that he’s been in therapy to help control his emotions. “The texts I sent were cruel and degrading,” he wrote in a statement on Instagram, per People. “No level of personal hurt and betrayal justifies the language I used, and I am ashamed of those messages. To anyone who has been on the receiving end of such words, I am truly sorry. I recognize that the criticism I am receiving is fair, and I am listening.”

Eklund, for her part, doesn’t plan to reconcile with McBee any time soon.

“I tried to get encourage him to get help a while ago and he declined it, so I’m happy that he’s seeking it now,” she told TMZ in early May. “But I have no plans to speak to him ever again.”

Albany Implements Measures to Address Child Abuse Crisis After a Decade-Long Delay

0

In a remarkable turn of events, Albany legislators recently approved a groundbreaking piece of legislation that prioritizes the well-being of children over the preferences of adults.

The bill, referred to as Kyra’s Law, emphasizes the critical importance of child safety. “The legislature acknowledges that ensuring the safety of children is of utmost importance and a fundamental aspect of their best interests,” the bill states.

The legislation further asserts that judicial decisions related to child custody and visitation should prioritize child safety as a primary concern.

Now, the bill awaits the signature of Governor Kathy Hochul to become law.

This legislative move comes a decade after the tragic death of two-year-old Kyra Franchetti, who was fatally shot by her father during an unsupervised visit mandated by the court.

Despite warnings by the Long Island toddler’s mother that her ex-husband was suicidal and was stalking her, the court approved this custody arrangement — with devastating consequences.

Far too many children in this country are at risk of suffering the same fate, as our courts refuse to heed flashing warning signals before they place kids in dangerous situations.

We tend to blame child welfare agencies for these mistakes.

Caseworkers may be quick to dismiss concerns about one parent’s history of domestic violence or mental illness, chalking up those claims to exaggeration during nasty break-ups.

And agencies may prioritize keeping children with parents instead of protecting them from harm, out of some misguided sense of social justice.

But the truth is, judges are the ones making the final decisions about where children should be placed — and too often they’re getting it wrong.

Just like we can’t blame police for public chaos when it’s judges who are the ones releasing violent criminals back onto the street hours after an arrest, we need to realize that agencies like New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services aren’t calling all the shots when it comes to keeping dangerous adults away from vulnerable children.

In some cases, ACS recommendations are simply being overridden by activist judges.

Too often, we’re giving parents and caregivers with clear histories of domestic violence and child abuse a chance to do kids harm.

Over the past two years, my colleagues and I have collected information on 5,000 child maltreatment fatalities between 2022 and 2026 in a database called Lives Cut Short.

Using media accounts, child welfare reports and medical examiner records, we’ve seen some distinct patterns.

While the records are by no means exhaustive, almost 900 of the cases we’ve analyzed have involved a history of domestic violence.

In New York state, where fatality records are easier to access than elsewhere, we found 109 cases where domestic violence by a parent or caregiver was involved.

There were almost 200 New York cases with prior histories of child protection reports.

In fact, cases of domestic violence should be a growing source of concern.

“Three fathers killed their families this week as domestic violence deaths remain high,” read a June 6 headline from The Washington Post.

Even as overall homicide rates are falling, the paper noted, the percentage of killings happening in families seems to be rising, from 1 in 7 in 2020 to 1 in 5 today.

One reason is that the victims are often too scared to help authorities punish their abusers: According to the NYPD, the city’s district attorneys did not prosecute 938 domestic-violence cases in the last quarter of 2025 because victims failed to cooperate.

The language of Kyra’s Law will seem like plain common sense to any ordinary New Yorker.

The law instructs judges to consider “any party’s history of domestic violence or child abuse or incidents involving harm to a child” when making a custody decision.

That means they must take into account “police reports, including domestic violence incident reports or reporting of incidents involving child abuse or domestic violence,” as well as “threats to harm or kill the child, the other party, the other party’s children, self or others, or companion animals” and “sexual abuse or other sexual offenses against the child or the other party.”

“That history may be a strong indicator of future behavior in these matters,” Ron Richter, who headed the Administration of Children’s Services under Mayor Mike Bloomberg, told me.

Indeed, he lamented, “We don’t prioritize history in our investigations.”

The new law will not only require Family Court judges to consider such histories; it also directs them to receive training to understand the risks they pose.

Kyra Franchetti was murdered in 2016.

Her grieving mother Jacqueline has fought for this law ever since.

It’s hard to believe that state legislators needed a decade to agree that it’s the right thing to do.

Let’s hope Hochul can act a little faster.

Georgia’s GOP Gubernatorial Showdown: Voter Decision in Pivotal Runoff

AUGUSTA, Ga – Today marks a pivotal moment for Georgia voters as they head to the polls to determine the candidates who will appear on the November ballot.

The primary runoff elections in Georgia are underway, featuring a variety of key races. Among the contests are crucial Republican match-ups for governor, U.S. Senate, and several other federal and state positions.

One of the most closely watched races is the Republican nomination for Governor. In this face-off, Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones is competing against businessman Rick Jackson. Both candidates have been actively campaigning across Georgia to secure votes.

On June 15th, the final day before the runoff, Burt Jones rallied support alongside current Governor Brian Kemp, who has publicly endorsed him. Meanwhile, Rick Jackson made a strategic stop in Augusta, passionately presenting his vision for Georgia’s future.

“People need to be lifted up; they need to have hope again,” Jackson emphasized. “Young people need to have hope, and by getting a new voice in the governor’s office that cares for people who are struggling day to day, we can address issues of affordability.”

With an endorsement from current governor Brian Kemp, Jones speaks about how this shows he is the better candidate. “Governor Kemp is the most popular you know, politician, elected official in the state of Georgia and so yeah we’re definitely happy to have it. and I think this just proves whose real conservative in this race is. I’m the only one that has President Trump’s and Governor Kemp’s endorsements so, I’ll, I’ll take it.”, Jones said.

Polls across Georgia will be open today, June 16th from 7 A.M. until 7 P.M. To find out about polling locations and where to visit by district, you can visit here.
