Shocking Incident in Gainesville: Woman Arrested for Family Member Stabbing

0

By Staff

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In the early hours today, police apprehended 29-year-old Tammara Aaliyh Mosely following accusations of stabbing a family member.

Responding to a call around 12:20 a.m. on June 14, an officer from the Gainesville Police Department arrived at Candlelight Estates Mobile Home Park located at 1600 NE 12th Avenue. Upon arrival, the officer discovered Mosely with blood on her, as well as the injured victim. Mosely allegedly indicated she needed to leave and compliantly placed her hands behind her back. The officer soon realized the blood on Mosely was not her own.

The victim claimed he had been stabbed, and Mosely reportedly confessed to injuring him, stating she “needed to just go.” Consequently, the officer handcuffed Mosely.

Fortunately, the officer noted that the victim’s wounds did not seem to be life-threatening.

The victim said he had been singing as he walked by Mosely’s room, and Mosely thought he was “talking bad about her,” so they started arguing. He said Mosely swung a glass bottle at him, and then another family member separated them.

The victim said Mosely came to his bedroom, holding a knife, and swung the knife at him multiple times, cutting him on his shoulder, upper back, and head. The victim said Mosely has mental issues and “always causes problems.”

Post Miranda, Mosely reportedly said she had been upset at another family member when the victim started antagonizing her, and they got into an argument. She said the victim attacked her and choked her, but then she reportedly contradicted herself by saying he hadn’t been able to choke her. She said she picked up a glass liquor bottle and swung it at the victim in self-defense before the other family member separated them. She reportedly said she “had to finish what she started” because of an undiagnosed mental problem, so she picked up a large kitchen knife, went to the victim’s room, and stabbed him multiple times.

Mosely has been charged with domestic aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and domestic aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She has no local criminal history. Judge David Kreider ordered her held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold her without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Starbucks Korea Shuts Doors Early for Essential History Training Amidst Marketing Controversy

SEOUL – Starbucks in South Korea is set to shut down all its locations early on June 22 for a mandatory training session focused on history and social sensitivity. This decision comes in response to significant criticism over a recent marketing campaign that was widely seen as insensitive to the victims of a violent military crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in 1980.

Shinsegae Group, holding a 67.5% ownership in Starbucks Korea, announced that its executives along with the staff at Starbucks Korea’s headquarters will participate in a training session on Wednesday. This session will be conducted by experts in history and sociology. In addition, all Starbucks outlets across the country will close at 3 p.m. the following Monday to allow employees to view a recording of the training, according to Shinsegae’s statement.

The controversy began when the coffee giant launched a marketing campaign featuring stainless-steel tumblers branded as “SS Tank,” and designated May 18 as “Tank Day.” This date coincides with the anniversary of the 1980 pro-democracy movement in Gwangju, which was brutally suppressed by the then military regime using force, including tanks and helicopters, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries.

The campaign aggravated the situation further by incorporating the slogan “Thwack it on the table!” Many interpreted this as a nod to a 1987 police statement that sought to obscure the torture-related death of student activist Park Jong-chol, where officials had falsely claimed he died after they “hit the desk with a thwack.”

The immediate backlash led Shinsegae to swiftly cancel the campaign and dismiss the CEO of Starbucks Korea. Shinsegae Chairman Chung Yong-jin later delivered a public apology via national television, while police launched an investigation following complaints from the families of the Gwangju crackdown victims. Additionally, Chung is scheduled to participate in separate training with other Shinsegae affiliate executives on June 24.

Shinsegae said the decision to close all Starbucks stores early for the first time since the chain’s 1999 launch in South Korea and require companywide training shows “how seriously it views the marketing controversy and its determination to prevent a recurrence.”

The crackdown in Gwangju came months after General Chun Doo-hwan seized power in a coup in late 1979. Government records show about 200 people died in Gwangju, but activists say the true death toll was much higher. Chun’s government also imprisoned tens of thousands, saying it was rooting out social evils.

Public anger over Chun’s dictatorship led to massive nationwide protests in 1987, forcing him to accept a constitutional revision introducing direct presidential elections, which is widely seen as the start of South Korea’s transition to democracy.

Authorities Report Suspect Fatally Assaulted Sleeping 90-Year-Old with Screwdriver

Inset: Anthony Cerda (Houston police). Background: Convenience store in the 7800 block of Canal Street in Houston, Texas (KTRK).

In a disturbing incident in Texas, a man allegedly forced entry into the residence of a 90-year-old by removing an air-conditioning unit from a window and proceeded to stab the elderly gentleman multiple times with a screwdriver.

Authorities have charged Anthony Cerda, 34, with capital murder following the death of Francisco Chura. According to Houston police, the tragic event unfolded on August 20, 2025, when officers were dispatched to Cerda’s home on Canal Street, responding to reports of a stabbing. Chura was transported to the hospital by paramedics but succumbed to his injuries on September 7, 2025.

The arrest affidavit reveals that Cerda allegedly launched his attack while Chura was asleep in his home, which is connected to a long-standing convenience store he owned. Cerda reportedly assaulted Chura by jumping on him, repeatedly punching, and stabbing him with the screwdriver. Investigators documented that Chura sustained numerous “small circular stabbing wounds,” and the blood-soaked bed sheets provided grim evidence of the brutal assault.

Detectives observed that a safe within the home was open and emptied, suggesting that the motive behind the murder was robbery. Additionally, a blood-stained, bent screwdriver was discovered at the scene.

Chura recounted to detectives his harrowing experience, explaining that he pretended to be dead until the assailant fled. He then concealed himself in the bathroom until daylight before seeking assistance from a neighbor. Chura reported that approximately $3,000 in cash was stolen from his safe and described the suspect as having long hair.

About two months after the stabbing, detectives saw a man with long hair hiding in a crawl space at a home near the crime scene, the affidavit said. He was seemingly trying to hide from police. The homeowner identified the man as her nephew, Cerda. She said he would sometimes stay at her home when he needed a place to live.

She said Cerda would often go inside the store and Chura would sometimes loan him money. He was in the store a day or so before the homicide, per cops. She called Chura’s death “such a sad story” and told police that they needed to “get to the bottom of it.”

Cerda told detectives he did not kill Chura and said he never had been inside the store.

Detectives spoke with another witness who said he went to the store on the night before the slaying but the door was locked. Chura let him inside and recounted how he gave money to a man who then returned a second time and demanded more cash. Chura refused and “kicked him out.” The witness asked who the man was but Chura declined to tell him.

In January 2026, cops interviewed a man who spoke with Cerda after the alleged murder. He said they were hanging out and getting high together when Cerda allegedly stated “I killed Pancho,” which is Chura’s nickname.

The big break in the case came when DNA results came back earlier this month. A lab determined the screwdriver had DNA from two people: Chura and Cerda.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for Cerda on Friday. He was already in the Harris County Jail on an unrelated charge. He is slated to appear in court on Monday.

A neighbor told local ABC affiliate KTRK that Chura was well known in the neighborhood and often helped people in need.

“Everybody grew up with him,” the neighbor said. “Everybody was surprised when that happened.”

Tragic Accident Claims Life of Pro Wrestler Jordan Saint in Long Island Collision

A professional wrestler tragically lost his life in a head-on collision on Long Island, which also left another motorist with severe injuries. This incident occurred only a few months after the wrestler had made his comeback to the ring.

Jordan Nasir St. Fort Colin, aged 23, was driving his 2012 Nissan Altima when he was struck by a Hyundai on the Bethpage State Parkway on Friday morning, according to New York State Police, as reported by News12.

The driver of the Hyundai, who sustained serious injuries, veered into the opposite lane, colliding with the Nissan. Authorities confirmed that there were no passengers in either of the vehicles involved.

The athlete from Patchogue, who performed under the name “Black Flash” Jordan Saint in the independent wrestling scene, passed away just a few months after his return to professional wrestling.

He had recently participated in Shooting Star Fest in Las Vegas, an event held in April that coincided with WWE’s major event, WrestleMania.

“No fancy promo. I’m back fr,” he said, announcing his return in January.

“Professional wrestling was the only real love of my life. I didn’t want to step away, but life lifed [sic].”

Pandemonium Pro Wrestling bosses described Saint as “a very talented wrestler” and a “truly unbelievable human.”

“He was the finest example of what truly loving pro wrestling looked like,” the Texas promotion said.

“Nobody I’ve ever come across has loved pro wrestling more than Jordan Saint.”

“He touched so many people with his kindness, his passionate, his personality and his charm.

“Jordan never folded & never changed for anyone if it meant it sacrificed who he was. He wore his heart on his sleeve at all times and we loved him for it.”

Saint also performed for the Naptown All-Pro Wrestling promotion and bosses said he was “hardheaded and dedicated to his craft.”

“That passion for the art & sport of pro wrestling bled through in every action, and if you took the time to really be in his presence, the zeal he had for the squared circle was infectious,” organizers said.

“Hardheaded & dedicated to his craft, Jordan was quick to soak up knowledge. Combined with his superb athleticism, he took to all aspects of in-ring competition lightning fast.

“A true diamond-tier prospect, we’re heartbroken to know we won’t see his full potential achieved.

“Jordan exemplifies everything we want Naptown All Pro to be. An unrelenting desire to be oneself, an overwhelming commitment to community, a calling to uplift what’s right in the world, and a deep-rooted love for professional wrestling.”

TNA wrestler Bear Bronson said Saint’s death “broke” his heart.

“This dude was ALWAYS smiling. ALWAYS happy, ALWAYS so polite. And man, did he have incredible ability that blew away everyone in the room,” he wrote.

“He loved learning & absorbing information. A beautiful soul gone way, way too soon.”

Saint was set to be on the card at Pandemonium’s event “Burst and Decay” in Austin on August 2.

Airline Introduces New Consumer Perk Amidst Ongoing Musk-Bezos Rivalry

0

Billionaire tech moguls Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are fiercely competing in the race to make high-speed Wi-Fi a staple on commercial flights.

As airlines strive to entice premium passengers, in-flight connectivity has become a critical area of competition, with Musk’s Starlink and Bezos’ Amazon Leo satellite network leading the charge in providing this cutting-edge technology.

This year, Starlink, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of all satellites orbiting the Earth and is a significant revenue source for SpaceX, has already secured agreements with 11 new airlines to offer in-flight Wi-Fi.

In comparison, the company anticipates signing contracts with 22 more airlines in 2025 and eight in 2024, according to data from Valour Consultancy, a firm specializing in aviation insights.

Meanwhile, Amazon, amidst constructing its Leo satellite network, encountered a major hurdle following a dramatic rocket failure by Blue Origin last month. Nevertheless, the company has made progress by landing its first airline clients, including Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways.

Installing satellite broadband on airliners represents a major cost for airlines, running into the hundreds of millions of dollars for large fleets.

But carriers increasingly rely on premium products like in-flight wi-fi to boost their margins, and they’re likely to commit more heavily in the coming years – Decius Valmorbida, president of travel at Amadeus, a travel technology company, calls the technology as a ‘game changer.’

‘It’s going to become a necessity that every airline will rush to have its own version of. It is becoming a must‑have,’ said Valmorbida.

Musk’s Starlink appears to have a head start as it competes to roll out online services across a wide range of airlines

Starlink, which uses thousands of low-Earth-orbit satellites rather than larger, slower geostationary satellites, is much faster than legacy systems, according to Ookla, a broadband analytics firm.

In a sign of demand across the airline spectrum, Southwest Airlines said it chose Starlink for its ‘speed to market,’ but has not ruled out Amazon’s Leo as it pushes for industry-leading wi-fi.

‘There’s multiple ways to get there,’ said Tony Roach, Southwest’s chief customer and brand officer.

American Airlines said in late May it that would equip more than 500 narrowbody aircraft with Starlink starting in early 2027.

Not everyone is convinced: Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary has ruled out adopting Starlink, citing costs and fuel burn from the antennas, prompting a fiery dispute with Musk.

Jefferies analysts estimate American Airlines’ Starlink rollout could cost $150 million to $250 million for equipment and installation, based on its fleet, before annual service fees that could exceed $60 million.

Lluc Palerm, research director at Analysys Mason, said airline wifi ‘will become a battleground’ between Starlink and Amazon Leo, though Amazon remains limited as its satellite constellation is in its infancy.

SpaceX now holds Starlink contracts covering more than 7,000 aircraft, cementing an ‘undeniable’ lead, said Daniel Welch, a senior consultant at Valour Consultancy.

Should fast, free in-flight wifi become a basic right for all passengers or stay a luxury perk?

Palerm ‌said Starlink’s early gains are meaningful because switching providers is costly: aircraft must be taken out of service for installations, onboard equipment is provider-specific and contracts typically run for years.

The airline sales come as SpaceX’s upcoming record-breaking public listing has sharpened investor focus on Starlink’s expansion beyond consumer broadband.

Starlink generated $11.4billion of SpaceX’s $18.67billion revenue in 2025, according to SpaceX’s IPO filing, making it by far the company’s largest revenue source.

Starlink is emphasizing speed and installation simplicity, while Amazon is pitching a broader technology ecosystem, including cloud computing, entertainment and retail links that it says can help airlines serve passengers beyond basic connectivity.

Delta’s choice of Amazon Leo illustrates that distinction. The carrier selected Amazon Leo for an initial 500 aircraft beginning in 2028, building on its Amazon Web Services relationship.

Legacy in-flight wifi providers including Viasat, Intelsat, Panasonic Avionics and Hughes remain embedded across large fleets.

Shocking RHORI Finale: Brian’s Arrest Follows Rulla’s Emotional Breakdown Over Cheating Scandal

The season finale of The Real Housewives of Rhode Island promises drama and intrigue as it culminates with a trip to Block Island and an unexpected arrest. In a bid to mend fractured friendships, Kelsey takes on the challenge of hosting the group, hoping to extinguish the lingering tensions. After all, if she can patch things up with Rosie, then perhaps anything is possible.

RHORI Finale Recap: Rulla Breaks Down Over Brian’s Cheating Drama as He Confirms the Video With His Mistress After Gary Calls Him Out for Claiming Jo-Ellen is a Liar, Plus Alicia’s Fiancé Billy Reproposes After 9 Years and Jo-Ellen & Liz Reconcile

As the cast prepares for their Block Island getaway, Liz aims to embrace a carefree attitude despite her doubts about Jo-Ellen’s behavior. Meanwhile, Rosie is simply looking forward to enjoying herself, and Liz is excited to revisit the place where she got engaged and married.

The trip includes husbands and boyfriends, adding an extra layer of complexity to the dynamics. When everyone gathers at the ferry terminal, there’s an awkwardly cordial exchange between Liz and Jo-Ellen. Jo-Ellen humorously compares their rocky friendship to “an abusive relationship” she can’t seem to leave behind.

Last to join the party are Rulla and Brian, whose arrival is marked by palpable tension. Rulla confesses to feeling uneasy about being stuck on an island with Jo-Ellen. As they finally reach their destination, they’re greeted by cold and windy weather—a far cry from the warm, harmonious atmosphere Kelsey envisioned for the trip.

Rulla and Brian are the last to arrive and things are…awkward. Rulla has “mixed feelings” about being stuck on an island with Jo-Ellen.  An hour later, they arrive at the destination, but it’s cold and windy, which is not quite the vibe Kelsey was going for.

As they squeeze into some cabanas, Jo-Ellen and Liz decide to take a walk to maybe try and move forward. Jo-Ellen wonders if Liz thinks they have a genuine friendship. In the heat of the moment, things have been done and said that have broken trust, but Liz suggests that they start over from a new place.  Jo-Ellen simply wants to move on and Liz is up for that.  They hug it out and the tension is lifted.

Before Jo-Ellen and Liz rejoin the group, Rulla thanks the other girls for having her back. She admits that she has not spoken to Jo-Ellen since polo. The stress of it all has been paying a toll on her and, according to Rulla, it does not seem like Jo-Ellen is really a true friend to her. However, to some of the ladies it seems like Rulla does not want to accept reality and that she just continues to defend her husband, Brian.

Alicia‘s fiancé Billy chats with Jo-Ellen’s husband about their lack of a wedding.  He feels like he has let Alicia down.  Alicia loves a good fairy tale, but their proposal ten years ago didn’t really feel romantic.  Billy didn’t even get down on one knee and he thinks that a re-proposal might be just what they need to reset.

Rulla makes it clear that this video Jo-Ellen showed everyone at the castle is nobody’s business.  She wants to handle her story her own way. But in the meantime, Rosie fills Jo-Ellen in on the newest.

Rulla knows (courtesy of Rosie) that there is a video floating around with Brian and his mistress.  When Brian walked up, he was bright red after being confronted.  Brian brushed the video off as fake, but Jo-Ellen refuses to be called a liar. Rosie points out that it’s easier for Rulla to call Jo-Ellen a liar rather than acknowledge that her husband is cheating.  The proof is there…and Rulla DID ask Jo-Ellen for the facts- Jo-Ellen did not randomly go digging for the drama.

They head to the Atlantic Inn and find their quaint rooms. Jo-Ellen is happy to report to her husband that things between her and Liz are now better. But when it comes to Rulla, Jo-Ellen is not letting the mouse go. Rulla was the one who asked Jo-Ellen for proof of the affair and when she came to Rulla with the evidence, Jo-Ellen certainly should not be called a liar just because Rulla can’t handle it!

Before the rest of the group arrives, Billy takes Alicia to a romantic set-up.  Alicia admits that Billy never does anything like this for her and so when he makes a gesture like this, it is blowing her away. He pries Alicia’s engagement ring off her finger and redoes the proposal, but this time, he goes down on one knee to ask for her hand in marriage (again, after 10 years). This is a symbol of a restart- now it’s time for them to move forward.

Rosie and Rich shriek congrats from the window and Alicia suggests they renew their proposal every ten years. Alicia lets Billy know that she wants a new ring, though- one that is so big that her hand falls.  Maybe THEN she will start thinking about the wedding…

Jo-Ellen pays a visit to Rulla’s room.  She wants to clear the air with Rulla and claims she is not trying to overstep- she merely got the proof Rulla asked for. Jo-Ellen does not want to be called a liar by Brian when she has been honest and telling the truth. Rulla has no intention of seeing this video, considering anyone can fake a date and time stamp.  This is all too sensitive for Rulla to handle. Jo-Ellen lets Rulla know she will not bring it up again and they decide to put it all to bed.

In the meantime, Jo-Ellen’s husband pulls Brian aside to confront him. Brian admits to getting filmed (so the video IS real), but wants to try to move past all of the drama.  Jo-Ellen is making it hard, as she keeps bringing all his dirty business to light.

Later at the clam bake, Kelsey announces that they will be playing a clamshell confessional game, which makes Rulla a little nervous.  Kelsey admits that it is a little shady, but it should make for some good entertainment. The game starts off cutesy, reminiscing about favorite memories from the summer, etc.,  but takes a turn when Rulla pulls a shell out that says, “what is the most embarrassing thing your partner has done in public?”  Awkward.

Instead of answering, she passes the question along to Jo-Ellen’s hubby.  When another question asks, “who is the one person who will stab you in the back, but smile in your face?” Rulla answers and admits she might’ve said Jo-Ellen earlier this summer, but nowadays, her thoughts have changed.  Rulla does not think that anyone in the group would “fit that mold” and they refer to each other as “ride or die b*tches.”

Brian makes a speech about how proud he is for the way Rulla handled all the awkwardness because now they are the most popular and are the ones everyone talks about the most. What?! Rulla becomes emotional talking about the support system around her and Jo-Ellen tells Alicia that she talked to Rulla nicely and in private.

It seems weird to Rosie that they are blaming Jo-Ellen for all of Rulla’s angst, and Rosie points out that the real problem is sitting right next to her and it’s Brian. Who, btw, tells Rulla that he is happy she put her “ego and pride aside for the good of our family.” It is a sure thing that Rulla has no intention of divorcing this guy. In the end, Kelsey is so happy to find out that the group seems healed and they are all on the same page.

Rosie’s house remains under construction, just like her friendship with Kelsey.  And, there are no kids on the agenda as of now. Jo-Ellen is working on the bond with her mother and letting bygones be bygones with Rulla, but she does still communicate with Brian’s mistress…

Liz and Dolores’s gummies have launched and she is not only getting a granddaughter, but also a son-in-law.  Kelsey’s ex is no longer paying her rent and she is finally learning how to write a check -omg. Ashley’s fam is still holding onto Audrey’s, and she is raking in the dough through all of her social media deals. Alicia and Billy are planning their wedding and she is trying to get more creative control over Pizza Mama. She is also working on her own crack-ah line.

Rulla forgave Brian about the video, but one month later, Brian found himself in a whole world of trouble.  He pled not guilty to a domestic violence charge and Rulla filed a no contact order against him. It turns out, Brian was arrested for tracking Rulla’s car.  Seems like her car knows more about her marriage than she does! This is considered stalking, which falls under domestic violence in RI.  Rulla had to take her car to the nearest police station to get the tracker removed.

Jo-Ellen claims she always got a weird vibe from Brian and shares that his mistress picked him up from jail.  WTF. Jo-Ellen seems like she is vindicated, but Rulla is having a hard time feeling “thankful” for all that Jo-Ellen was trying to bring to light.  But now, where does Rulla go from here??

Michelle Obama and Quinta Brunson Inspire 100 Young Women at Obama Presidential Center Pre-Opening Event

0

CHICAGO — The Windy City is buzzing with excitement as former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama return to their hometown to mark a significant occasion. They are in town to prepare for the highly anticipated opening of the Obama Presidential Center.

In the lead-up to the event, President Obama engaged in some spirited basketball games on the center’s court, a fitting nod to his love for the sport. Additionally, he spent quality time with families and children, joining them on the newly constructed playground nestled in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side.

The public will have the opportunity to explore the Obama Presidential Center starting Friday, June 19. However, visitors should be aware that several road closures will come into effect beginning Monday, affecting parts of Midway Plaisance and Stony Island.

Meanwhile, Michelle Obama is also stepping into the spotlight as the grand opening approaches. She is set to address the public on Thursday, June 18, sharing her insights and excitement for this landmark moment.

In a delightful event on Sunday, the former First Lady joined forces with “Abbott Elementary” star Quinta Brunson. Together, they recorded a podcast with an audience of young girls, fostering an inspiring and empowering atmosphere.

It was a full-circle moment inside the Obama Presidential Center as Michelle Obama returned to her roots, connecting with the next generation of young women and reminding them what’s possible.

Before the world knew her name, Michelle Obama was a young girl growing up on Chicago’s South Side.

“I grew up right in South Shore, went to Whitney Young, had a strong neighborhood community,” she said.

The former first lady says she found her voice in that community. Now, as the South Side prepares to open the Obama Presidential Center, she’s back home, helping the next generation find theirs.

On Sunday, 100 young women, part of the Girls Opportunity Alliance Network, were given a private audience with the former first lady, her brother Craig Robinson and Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson inside the center’s Elie Wiesel Auditorium.

The young women got their own question-and-answer session with the panel. Madison O’Shields, a rising sophomore at Spelman College, asked the first question.

“Who was your Michelle Obama?” O’Shields asked.

“My biggest mentors were the people I saw every day,” Obama replied.

“She’s really humble in the position and the power that she holds, so it was an amazing experience to be able to hear from her,” University of Illinois student Kari Mack said.

O’Shields and Mack are both South Side natives. For them, this moment held a deeper meaning – not just a sit-down with the former first lady, but a chance to hear from someone who grew up just like they did.

“I couldn’t stop staring,” Mack said. “You’re in awe to be in the presence of someone who has continuously made an impact.”

“Everything that they said today was so, so insightful,” O’Shields said. “She really reminded me to just take it one step at a time, one day at a time.”

In answering O’Shields’ question, Michelle Obama said she owes her success to her roots-and to those who grounded her.

“I have lived an amazing life, but the truth is who matters to me, who shaped me, is Marian Robinson from the South Side of Chicago,” Obama said.

The young women describing the experience as a powerful and reflective conversation, one where many of them felt seen in the answers to their questions.

And as the Obama Presidential Center prepares to open in Jackson Park, they say they’re walking away with something lasting: a renewed sense of their future.

AFP Chief Highlights Rising Threat of Coercion Leading Youth Toward Self-Harm and Violence

0

IN BRIEF

  • Two Australian agencies will spearhead a meeting with tech companies in London about protecting young people online.
  • AFP commissioner Krissy Barrett says a “number of threat vectors” can lead to child exploitation or radicalisation.

Note: This article includes references to self-harm.

Australian children exploring the digital realm are increasingly vulnerable to threats such as extremism, radicalization, and exploitation, according to the federal police commissioner.

In response, Australia is collaborating with top global law enforcement agencies and technology companies to tackle online crime and safeguard its youth.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) are leading discussions with the Five Eyes Law Enforcement Group (FELEG) and major tech firms in London from June 16 to 18.

Representatives from Australia will be joined by key figures from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement/Homeland Security Investigations, the US Drug Enforcement Administration, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency, UK Counter Terrorism Policing, and New Zealand Police.

AFP commissioner Krissy Barrett told SBS News the meeting will prioritise “community safety” and combating the “scale and the pace” of “tech-enabled crime” targeting young people.

What is happening online?

In the 2024–25 financial year, the AFP’s Centre to Counter Child Exploitation received 82,764 reports of online child exploitation and 1,325 reports of sextortion.

Barrett said there are a “number of threat vectors” that can lead to child exploitation or radicalisation.

They rely on a child being “exploited or manipulated” and, at times, coerced into participating in “crime as a service”, which she described as a “worrying trend”.

“We see organised crime groups targeting or exploiting young people to carry out particular parts of criminal offences,” she explained.

“It might be a young person is tasked to go and source a jerry can, another young person is tasked to go and steal the car, a third young person is tasked to actually take the car, and the jerry can and start a fire at a location — that’s what we’re determining as crimes of service.

“[They’re] being paid pretty small amounts of money and not understanding the severity or the ramifications of their part in what is a serious crime.”

Barrett said that while young people are victims of crime, through “victimisation or manipulation, they are influenced to go and perpetrate crimes”.

Who is at risk?

Barrett said young people between the ages of 14 and 16 are the most vulnerable — with young girls exposed to “sadistic online exploitation” by “decentralised online networks”, she said.

“We see cases where young girls are being forced or manipulated to hurt themselves, hurt their pets, to hurt their siblings.”

She said bad actors may tell their victim they will no longer be a target if they share videos hurting themselves or others.

The AFP has reported a rise in teenage boys possessing “violent, extremist material”, she said.

Possessing or sharing such material was criminalised in January 2024. Since then, 22 young people have been charged with violent extremist material offences.

“We’re talking about some very graphic material: beheadings, torture and killings,” Barrett said.

“We know that can have a desensitising effect on a young person, who is at an age where they’re still vulnerable in terms of knowing what’s right and wrong, and coming up with their own belief systems.”

Since 2020, the AFP has investigated 63 cases of youth radicalisation, with 33 charged with state or Commonwealth offences.

Of the 63 cases, 46 per cent were religiously motivated violent extremism and 24 per cent were ideologically motivated violent extremism.

The majority of the cases involved children living in NSW, with children with neurodiversity and mental health diagnoses being at higher risk of radicalisation.

Where is it happening online?

Child exploitation and radicalisation are facilitated through online environments such as gaming platforms and online chat groups, with AI chatbots being used to identify and target young people.

For Barrett, the inclusion of big tech companies in addressing these crimes is “imperative” because policing them is “beyond the ability of just law enforcement alone”.

“We have the experience, we have the insights, we have the expertise around the criminal offending, but they own the platforms, they have the engineering, they understand how they can deploy different technologies to be far more proactive,” she said.

She said that the FELEG — which brings together agencies from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US — has never been “more important than it is now”.

“We’re at a point collectively, as Five Eyes Law Enforcement Group, where we’re saying that if we don’t have some serious intervention now, we are going to see some significant challenges in our communities,” she said.

When it comes to regulating and policing big tech companies in relation to these crimes, the commissioner said it’s also a matter for other agencies, such as the eSafety Commissioner.

What can parents do?

Barrett said it’s crucial for parents to understand that “these threats are real”.

“We’re seeing this in our caseload … we’re seeing it right across the spectrum of the Australian community,” she said.

She said transparency cannot be overstated; parents “need to know what their kids are doing online”.

“Every household will be different … but I strongly encourage parents to understand what security mechanisms exist. Security settings are extremely important,” she said.

A common pathway for young people who end up in high-risk online spaces is curiosity.

“Kids who are inquisitive and curious, and want to ask questions … they might think [those questions] are too sensitive to ask a teacher or a trusted adult [and] will go online,” Barrett explained.

“They’re trying to find out the answers to these questions themselves, and we know in the online space how quickly you can get taken down the rabbit hole or echo chamber.

“We see, as law enforcement, how quickly that can then escalate into extremism, radicalisation, exploitation.”

Barrett said parents need to “be able to have honest conversations with their kids”.

“These kids need to know they can come to their parents for help.”

She said young people need to understand their vulnerability, seek out trusted sources for information, and arm themselves with “the tools to understand” exploitative, crime-related behaviours online.

Detroit Sisters Allegedly Attack Restaurant Employee Over Incorrect Meal Order

0

A heated confrontation at a Detroit chicken restaurant has led to serious accusations against two sisters, one of whom was nine months pregnant at the time. The sisters, Brianna and Kierianna Long, are alleged to have attacked a restaurant employee over an incorrect order. According to prosecutors, the altercation escalated to the point where one sister reportedly stabbed the worker and both attempted to hurl hot grease, pans, and other objects at her.

Facing a slew of charges, including assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to inflict great bodily harm less than murder, and assault with a dangerous weapon, the sisters have pleaded not guilty, as reported by local news outlets. The charges stem from a May 30 incident that has left many in the community stunned.

Prosecutors allege that the altercation began when the sisters, frustrated by a wrong order, stormed behind the counter to confront the 23-year-old employee. The situation quickly turned violent, with the sisters reportedly throwing various items at the employee and pursuing her throughout the restaurant.

The allegations include attempts to strike the employee with pots and pans and a threat to douse her with hot grease, underscoring the severity of the incident. These charges highlight the extreme nature of the dispute, which went far beyond a simple customer complaint. The sisters’ actions, as detailed by prosecutors, have now led to significant legal repercussions.

The sisters threw items at the employee, chased her through the restaurant, hit her with pots and pans, attempted to throw hot grease on her head and threatened to kill her, according to prosecutors.

“I’m going to kill you,” one of the sisters allegedly said during the encounter, WDIV reported.

The employee was then stabbed in the stomach with a knife by Kierianna, prosecutors said.

The injured employee had to be taken to the hospital for surgery after she ran out of the restaurant and hid inside a stranger’s vehicle while calling for help.

Brianna, 29, and Kierianna, 26, fled the scene after the attack but were eventually arrested by police.

Defense attorneys attempted to dispute the allegations in court, arguing that the employee triggered the assault by saying that she did not “give a f—” about the food order error before throwing items including knives first during the incident.

Brianna, who was 9 months pregnant at the time of the incident, gave birth four days before her arraignment, her attorney said, ClickonDetroit reported. She pleaded with the judge by saying that she was innocent and had a 4-day-old baby at home.

Both sisters pleaded not guilty to the charges. Brianna was held on a $25,000 cash bond and Kierianna was held on a $100,000 cash bond.

National Guardsman Natravien Landry Admits Guilt in Soldier’s Fatal Shooting Amid Personal Dispute

A former member of the US Army National Guard has admitted guilt in a tragic incident involving the fatal shooting of an Army soldier. The confrontation arose when he discovered the soldier in bed with his former partner, who is also the mother of his child.

Natravien R. Landry, 27, entered a guilty plea on June 11 for charges of second-degree murder and using a firearm during a crime of violence. These charges stem from the death of US Army Sgt. Andre S. Stewart Jr. The incident took place at the military base formerly known as Fort Eisenhower, currently Fort Gordon, located in Augusta, Georgia.

The consequences of Landry’s actions are severe. Federal prosecutors have indicated that he could face a prison sentence ranging from a minimum of 10 years to life.

The altercation occurred on the morning of December 14, 2024, at an apartment complex within the military installation. Details from a probable cause affidavit reveal that Landry, while on a break from drill duty earlier that day, decided to visit the woman’s residence, leading to the fatal encounter.

According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, Landry was at drill duty earlier that morning and was on a break when he went to the woman’s home.

A witness told authorities that Landry noticed a black truck parked in front of the apartment and asked who owned the vehicle.

Suspecting another man was at the residence, Landry barged inside the apartment and upstairs to a bedroom where he found Stewart, who was dating the woman at the time, according to federal prosecutors.

The woman said they were sleeping when she heard a commotion. Two children were also present at the time of the incident.

Landry, who was aware Stewart was unarmed, shot him once in the chest. Stewart was later pronounced dead.

After the shooting, Landry fled the residence and the military base, but he was later arrested during a traffic stop on Interstate 85 by the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office.

He threw the gun out of the window, but it was later found by deputies. Testing proved that the recovered handgun was used in the shooting.

Landry later admitted to the shooting in a Mirandized interview.

The woman told investigators that Landry was jealous of Stewart.

Stewart’s sister wrote shortly after the incident that her brother was “viciously murdered.” She said he left behind a 5-year-old son who was one of the children in the apartment at the time of the shooting.

Landry’s sentencing date has not yet been set.
